Briefly: With just over one month to go until The Walking Dead returns on AMC, the show’s marketing push has just been turned up a notch.

Today, the network debuted a new behind-the-scenes video, which features The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman giving a tour of one of the show’s many sets. AMC has also released a new piece of key art for the season, which spotlights Rick standing all alone near a broken fence. As we’ve seen from the already released trailer, the walkers are bound to get in at some point.

Take a look at the new video and artwork below, and let us know if you’re excited! The Walking Dead returns on October 13th!

Briefly: I’m already a huge fan of Marvel’s Unlimited service, and for US residents things just got even better.

Marvel today announced a new tier in their popular (and pretty fantastic) Unlimited service called Marvel Unlimited Plus. The new tier gets you all of the benefits of the standard Unlimited subscription(full access to over 13,000 digital comics on your computer and mobile devices), plus a myriad of other benefits.

Plus rings in at $99 per year instead of Unlimited’s standard $69, but it sounds like the added cost is well worth it. Here’s what a Marvel Unlimited Plus subscription will get you:

-Marvel Unlimited Age of Ultron Collectable Kit containing a limited edition Hasbro Marvel Legends 6″ AU Variant Ultron figure – not available anywhere else, an exclusive variant edition Age of Ultron #10 comic with cover art by Salvador Larroca, plus your very own, personalized Plus member card, welcome letter, and custom collectible comic box (great for all those digital comics).

-Invitations to special Plus members-only events at New York Comic Con and more! Events may include creator meet-and-greets, signings and one-of-a-kind merchandise

-Early access to the freshest Marvel announcements – take advantage of the never-before-offered opportunity to get the latest from Marvel as it goes to news outlets!

-15% off digital comics and collections at the Marvel Digital Comics Shop**

-10% off Marvel merchandise every day at the MarvelStore.com

-Even more surprises throughout the year!

Sounds like a pretty great deal to me. Sadly, being Canadian, I’m only eligible for the standard Unlimited service (which I use frequently, the iPad being my preferred reading device).

Are you already an Unlimited subscriber? Will you be upgrading your membership? If you haven’t yet subscribed, what’s stopping you? Sound out below!

Briefly: We’re just over a month away from the return of television’s biggest series, The Walking Deadand AMC today debuted the first clip from the upcoming season.

From the clip, it looks as though the prison folks are doing pretty well for themselves. They’ve built a much better door system than the old fences would have had, plus it looks like there’s a pretty solid barrier around the prison (or at least this area). Could Michonne be hurt, however? Why does she spend so much time trying to keep the walkers at bay, instead of simply slicing their heads off?

Take a look at the clip below (clip begins at 36 seconds), and let us know what you think! Season four of The Walking Dead premieres on October 13th!

Briefly: The return of AMC’s The Walking Dead is just a few months away, and the network today debuted a great new behind-the-scenes featurette.

The video features much of the show’s cast (plus The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman) revealing just a little of what you should expect in the fourth season. From the sounds of it, we’re in for an intense premiere, and what could be the most exciting year yet.

Take a look at the featurette below, and let us know what you think! The Walking Dead returns on October 13th!

Briefly: Here it is folks, the highly anticipated, long awaited first trailer for season four of AMC’s adaptation of The Walking Dead.

The show’s disappointing (understatement?) third season finale was a stark departure from the prison arc in Kirkman’s comic, and left all of us wondering just what could come next. Now that they’ve filled the prison with old folks and children, it seemed as though our survivors were set to begin working on rebuilding a small society. As you can see from the below trailer, things (expectedly) don’t work out that way.

I won’t spoil things further, so take a look at the awesome first trailer below, and let us know what you think! Scott Gimple’s the man, and I think we’re gearing ourselves up for the best season yet!

Did you see Macon on that map? Could we be seeing a Telltale tie-in/Easter egg? Where is the Governor? Sound out below!

Briefly: There have been rumours of a Heroes revival since before the show even aired its last episode. Each and every time word comes that Heroes will return in one form or another, fans are left with nothing but disappointment as nothing ever comes to light.

This time, it’s official. Heroes will have a fifth season in comic book form.

Dynamite Entertainment is bringing the franchise back to life; Cullen Bunn is set to write the book, which is currently without an artist (but it won’t be Tim Sale). Bunn is a newcomer to the Heroes comics, but as he was an avid fan of the show, I have faith that things should turn out pretty well.

In an interview with CBR, Bunn states:

“I was a faithful viewer of ‘Heroes’ when it was on television. The things that most appealed to me about this are that I like the world. I like the concept of ordinary people who discovery they have these powers and are working in a world where superheroes are not common knowledge. It’s all about normal people discovering this and the situations they get into. There are some aspects of that which are still out there to be discovered.

More than that, I really want to delve into these characters more,” the writer continued. “That was really the heart of the show. Sure, there were people with powers, but what really appealed to me was how they grew as characters. There’s a core group of characters that are mainly from the first season who I really like and we’ll be seeing in the book.”

Bunn went on to reveal that all of the series’ main characters would return and that, like the show, the comic would switch perspectives between issues.

With the way that season four ended, I’ve been itching for more Heroes for years. The series had its fair share of problems, but I’d jump on the opportunity to get back into this world. How do you feel about the announcement? Is Dynamite’s Heroes something for your pull list? Or will you ignore it like you did the later seasons? Sound out below!

Decisions, decisions.

As I sat in front of my television waiting for 400 Days to download from the Playstation Store, I thought I knew exactly what Telltale had in store for us: there’d be some new characters, some new drama, and some uncomfortable decisions, but there was no way that it would be able to match the level of intensity of the game’s seven-month-long first season. Apparently, I had no idea what I was really in for.

The board of survivors, again, playable in any order.
The board of survivors, again, playable in any order.

The Walking Dead: 400 Days takes a stark departure from the linearity of the previous chapters. As the game opens, you’ll have to make your first intriguing, yet tough decision: whose story will you play first? See, instead of following a few characters through a lengthy set of episodes, 400 Days offers five separate, short tales, beginning with a story just two days after the initial outbreak, and closing with an epilogue, fittingly 400 days into the zombie apocalypse.

That first choice is one of the most incredible and defining aspects of 400 Days. Each character’s journey is completely separate, yet oddly connected (there’s even a connection to events in Season One). The order that you play them in can and will drastically change the way you feel about characters, locations, and events that you experience later in the game. And what memorable events they are! Each character’s story in the DLC, be it Vince, Wyatt, Russell, Bonnie, or Shel, features events that will change you, decisions that you will question for days, and moments that will haunt you until Season Two releases this fall. The nail-biting intensity and “so nerve wracking that I need to pause or take a break” moments from every episode of the game’s first season are back in full force here.

I'm getting chills just thinking about this scene.
I’m getting chills just thinking about this scene.

The fact that these moments hold such weight is a true testament to Telltale’s consistent quality of writing and direction. Because 400 Days has so many stories to tell, each section’s playtime is astoundingly short. We spend only 20-30 minutes with each character, with someone’s life or well being in jeopardy for the bulk of that time, and yet I feel as though I’ve already had the opportunity to come to know each and every one of our new survivors. I’m still asking myself how that’s even possible, but Telltale’s writing ability is really what shines here, where character’s traits, hopes, fears, skills, past lives, and more are all revealed subtly, satisfyingly, and sometimes heartbreakingly, exactly when they need to be. I’ve said time and time again that Telltale’s The Walking Dead has featured some of gaming’s best writing, possibly ever, and 400 Days definitely keeps with that trend. I don’t want to give away too much, but again, the Telltale team does an exceptional job of putting you immediately in the shoes of characters who are both incredibly diverse and find themselves in incredibly diverse situations, like playing Roshambo to decide who checks outside the car for a possible survivor or pulling the trigger on another human being in order to maintain the safety of the group. The situations become so stressful to navigate that our Editor in Chief Jonathan told me he and his wife Laura had to start flipping a coin just to continue making decisions.

I have a great deal of praise to give 400 Days, but like all things in life, nothing is perfect. The PS3 version of the DLC, as with all previous chapters, plays host to a myriad of technical issues (I can’t comment on technical issues on other platforms). This time however, things were even worse: constant framerate drops, a lot of out-of-sync audio, and a consistently choppy camera actually had me concerned for my console’s health.

It's hard to say whose story was the most intense.
It’s hard to say whose story was the most intense.

Of course, as incredible and intense as these miniature tales manage to be, it’s simply impossible for them to match the cripplingly emotional tale of Lee, Clementine, and the other stars of season one. Our previous journey was seven months long, with hours upon hours of gameplay, countless tough decisions, and more moments of despair than any gamer should ever have to go through. At times, 400 Days simply feels paltry in comparison. Each tale could act as an extended scene of a bigger episode, and I think that it’s safe to say that all of us would love to play through these stories in their entirety.

That may lead to the most important and exciting aspect of 400 Days: what on Earth will come next? We’re nearly halfway through the Summer now, with Telltale set to begin a second season in the fall. Could 400 Days act as an introduction to our next group of survivors? I almost feel as though it has to. If not, why would the developer create a new batch of amazingly real, relatable characters if we were only meant to spend a few minutes with each of them? And how does 400 Days continue to connect to Season One? Could our new group meet up with a hardened and alone Clementine? Could our choices from the game’s first season affect the character that Clementine has become?

Clementine ranks among video gaming's best characters... ever.
Clementine ranks among video gaming’s best characters… ever.

If this insanely dramatic and intense DLC chapter is a direct prologue for what’s next, then 400 Days is one hell of a start, and season two of Telltale’s The Walking Dead could easily follow in season one’s footsteps, and be one of the best games of the year. Whatever platform you’re playing on, The Walking Dead: 400 Days is well worth the $4.99 asking price. As soon as the credits roll you’ll be dying to begin the experience again. If not, you’ll simply be spending days wondering what could have happened had you made that other decision.

The Walking Dead: 400 Days scores a cool 4/5. If you’re already a fan of Telltale’s Walking Dead series, give it a download immediately. If not, begin with episode one: A New Day, and brace yourself…

Can you believe that The Walking Dead is almost ten years old?

During yesterday’s Image Expo, The Walking Dead co-creator Robert Kirkman outlined some fantastic plans for the future of the series, and things really start to kick off during the franchise’s anniversary month this October.

First, it’s All Out War. A new 12 issue arc beginning with issue #115 brings The Walking Dead bi-weekly. Whether you side with Rick Grimes’ “Survivors,” Jesus’s “Hilltop,” Negan’s “Saviors,” or Ezekiel’s “Kingdom,” this is certainly a war that you won’t want to miss.

Next up is a very special, full colour rerelease of The Walking Dead‘s premiere issue. Award-winning colourist Dave Stewart is tackling the important task of colouring Tony Moore’s classic artwork. Regardless of how many are printed, you know that this one will sell out completely.

Last, but not least. October will see the release of The Walking Dead: Tyreese Special, which will again reintroduce us to the character with a reprint of his first appearance (all the way back in issue #7), and a reprint of his Free Comic Book Day origin story.

Preview images have not yet been released, but we’ll be sure to share as soon as they’re unveiled! Are you looking forward to All Out War?

Survivors

Briefly: These were just sent my way, and are far too gorgeous not to share.

An incredible artist by the name of Andry Rajoelina has debuted a new art series titled “Super Families”, which is set to premiere at the Paris Comic Con this weekend. The series is a stylish adaptation of many of the Marvel universe’s most famous families, and each piece is absolutely stunning.

Six individual pieces have been unveiled so far. Check them out below, and we’ll be sure to update you if more are revealed! You can also head to Andry’s deviantART page to see even more amazing work. Be sure to let us know what you think of the series!

How’s everyone liking all this pre-E3 news so far?

Via GameTrailers, Travellers Tales has just released an awesome new trailer for the upcoming Lego Marvel Super Heroes. The game has been kept under wraps for quite some time, with only small peeks and teasers being revealed. This new trailer gives us a much better look at the game, including some major plot elements. I’m unbelievably excited for this title.

We’ve all known about DC’s impending “Villain Month” for some time, but now that we’re just a few short months away from the event, the publisher has started releasing official details.

First, all books will be $3.99 (yes, groan, groan, mumble, mumble), but each confirmed book will also feature a cool 3D cover. We’re not talking trading-card sized hologram or a small piece of the image either, but the entire cover. It’s pretty cool, and I’m sure that any book you pick up regularly will be worth the extra dollar that month. Confirmed books at this time are Lex Luthor #1, Joker #1, First Born #1, Bizarro #1, Two-Face #1, Metallo #1, Relic #1, Desaad #1, Darkseid #1, Ventriloquist #1, Cyborg Superman #1, H’El #1, Creeper #1, Grodd #1, Poison Ivy #1, and Parasite #1.

Buzzfeed has a fantastic interview with Dan DiDio and Jim Lee about what Villain Month means for the DC Universe. It’s a great read, and if you weren’t excited for September before, maybe it can turn you around.

Check out some covers from Villain Month below, and let us know what you’re planning to pick up!

We’re just a few days away from getting our first taste of The Wake, Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy’s new miniseries that spans the world, the ocean, and even time itself. I’m a sucker for anything with Snyder’s name on it: Batman is one of the best books coming from DC right now, American Vampire is consistently wonderful, and every single one of his other projects is well worth picking up. I’ve actually never experienced any of Sean Murphy’s previous works, but judging by the preview pages found below, we’re in for an absolute treat.

Issue #1 of The Wake hits shelves Wednesday, May 29th. You’ll want to add it to your pull list soon, as with names like this on the front of the book, it’s going to sell out fast. Check out some preview pages from issue one below, and let us know what you think!

Traveller’s Tales is doing a great job at keeping this one under wraps.

The developer has just released a new teaser for the upcoming Lego Marvel Super Heroes. The preview is short but sweet, showing off just a few of the heroes you’ll be able to play in the game. Very little footage from the actual game has been released, so while we know how well Lego Marvel Super Heroes will play (based on all of the other awesome Lego video games), I’m beginning to wonder if there’s something new and exciting in store for us.

Watch the new teaser below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the game. Lego Marvel Super Heroes is set to hit consoles later this year!

If you’ve been keeping up with the consistent coverage we’ve been giving Naughty Dog’s upcoming survival/horror/action title, The Last of Us, then you know full well just how excited we are for its release. Every image, every trailer, every clip has been utterly fantastic, and coming from a studio like Naughty Dog, it’s easy to see that The Last of Us is set to be one of the best games of 2013.

To get you up to speed in this terrifying new world, Neil Druckmann, lead writer on The Last of Us, and comic artist/writer/sensation Faith Erin Hicks have crafted a prequel tale that introduces us to the game’s heroine, Ellie, and takes us through her post-apocolypic journey (which of course, eventually leads us to Joel and the events of the game).

Issue #1 of the four issue miniseries is now available at your local comic store. If you’re a digital reader (or outside of North America), you’ll have to wait until April 10th when American Dreams hits Dark Horse Digital.

Take a peek at some preview pages from issue one below! Already pick the book up? Let us know how it is! The Last of Us releases worldwide on June 14th.

If you’ve read DC comics in the last few years or so, there’s no reason not to know the name Geoff Johns. If anyone has a had a significant role in shaping the Green Lantern Corps, it’s him. By bringing back Hal Jordan in Green Lantern: Rebirth, Johns began his career of changing the Green Lantern Corps’ corner of the DC Universe. No longer were the Green Lanterns the only corps in existence, there became a multitude of Lantern Corps’ with various colors and emotional connections. Fans even got a look at how Hal and his post-Parallax successor Kyle Rayner would interact, and their feelings regarding the other’s legacy.

Green Lantern Corps
Green Lantern Corps

From here, he introduced us to much more than just Will. We saw that Willpower and and the blue energy of Hope made man and alien alike the best they could be and accomplish many heroic deeds. Unfortunately, we were also shown the wondrous horrible things that Rage and Fear were capable of. The most unlikely and often underrated characters became champions of Compassion and Love. Then we got to know Larfleeze and the orange Avarice energies. After that, things went to hell in the pages of the Blackest Night saga as an army of the dead rose up from their graves, being lead by Nekron and Black Hand, who we hadn’t seen since Rebirth. It was during this time, 2010, that Johns was promoted to Chief Creative Officer of DC. After this, we got Brightest Day and then, for some reason, Flashpoint. I really have no words for Flashpoint. None at all.

Poster Children for The Various Lantern Corps'

He has brought some interesting things into the Green Lantern mythos, such as Sinestro somehow getting hold of a Green Lantern ring. Over a year and a half later, I’m still trying to wrap my brain around that. Then there was the fact that Sinestro gave Hal a duplicate ring, which is also hard to believe. Then there’s Baz, the new GL of Earth, bringing the total number of Corps affiliated GLs to five in the New 52. The thing is, after issue 12 or so, the quality of the GL stories has been in a gradual decline. While it hurts to say that, it did have to be mentioned. I’m looking forward to Johns wrapping up Wrath of the First Lantern and to see good things in the GL book again.

The Lanterns and Volthoom, The First Lantern
The Lanterns and Volthoom, The First Lantern

After issue 20, Johns will be leaving Green Lantern in order to keep up with his CCO duties and writing such titles as Justice League, Aquaman (which he single-handedly made awesome again) and Justice League of America. The first two have been consistently good and many are hoping for good things from JLA. Due to his early and well-earned status as one of the best writers of the New 52, I wish him luck in his current and future projects. May the New Gods watch over your career, Mr. Johns.

Earlier this year, Lego and Marvel announced Lego Marvel Super Heroes. The Lego series of video games really needs no introduction; titles like Lego Batman, Lego Indiana Jones, and Lego Harry Potter have been pleasing kids, adults, and fans for years.

This Fall, the hat tips towards Marvel fans. Marvel Lego Super Heroes will release on Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii U, Vita, 3DS, and PC later this year. GameTrailers today released the first gameplay video for the title, which unsurprisingly looks fantastic.

One of the highlights of DC’s whole “New 52” reboot has been the series Earth-2, from writer James Robinson and artist Nicola Scott. Set on an alternate Earth, Robinson has taken the old Golden Age icons of World War II, for decades portrayed only as old men from a bygone era, and re-invented them as young, new super-heroes, who have take up the mantle of heroism in the wake of the death of their world’s version of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. I caught up with writer James Robinson at this past weekend’s Wonder-Con in Anaheim to chat a bit about upcoming events in the pages of Earth-2

Earth 2-Zone-014

Geekscape-So I’m a really huge fan of yours going back to the Starman series from the 90’s; I wanted to ask first since you are in way the curator of the Golden Age characters at DC for the past few decades, between Starman and The Golden Age and starting the previous run of Justice Society of America, how did you feel about taking on this new Earth-2 book just in general, having to re-invent all these characters and take all their history away? And did you have any second thoughts about it?

Robinson- I was a little dubious at the beginning, I wasn’t sure If I wanted to do it… I wasn’t sure if it was the right thing. But then pretty early on, what helped me was realizing that at one time, those Golden Age characters were all young guys. We are so used to thinking of them as these old guys with this history, but at one point they were young, and what I tried to do was capture and distill the thing that made them great when they were these young Golden Age characters, so once I began to do that– and especially since the first Golden age character I began to develop was Jay Garrick (The Flash) I’m very proud of the fact that he sort of has a personality now, and I’m not sure that he had one before, he was just this cool older guy, but now I know how he would act, how he would think, and I think that readers have begun to respond to that too. So that’s really what began it for me. And then with Alan Scott (Green Lantern) creating a character that was this big “Type-A” personality, making his character as rich as I could and as full as I could, because I knew I was going to make him gay, and I didn’t want to make that his only personality trait.

Earth2Flash
Geekscape-Well, as a gay fan I want to thank you for that. I’m really happy that you did that, because we need more of that in mainstream comics. Now you’ve said in other interviews that on Earth-2, Wonder Woman was the first super hero as opposed to Superman, which is why people with super powers are referred to as “The Wonders” on Earth-2. Because of that and her role as the first iconic hero, is Earth-2 a more open and feminist culture? will we see any effect of having Wonder Woman be so prominent in that world?

2559059-wonder_woman
Robinson-Yes you will, and you’ll see them both in general stuff as you see the world taking shape, because I’m still building the world every issue. You’ll also see it very specifically with Fury and her backstory, and who her father is… that will blow your mind when you find out who her father is.

Geekscape-Does she even have a father?

RobinsonShe has a father. She wasn’t sculpted out of clay.

Geekscape-Now was your Wonder Woman sculpted out of clay? (the main Earth’s Wonder Woman was changed from being sculpted from clay to the daughter of Zeus as part of the New 52 reboot)

RobinsonI believe so. I wanted to keep that part of the mythos alive, but with her daughter Fury there is a whole back story and a whole drama about who her father is, and it ties in to the whole more feminist culture and everything, so just bear with me.

Fury, introduced in Earth-2 issue #8, is the daughter of Wonder Woman and an unknown father. In the old continuity, Fury was the offspring of Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor, but James Robinson says that's no longer the case.

GeekscapeWe recently learned that Earth-2 will be getting a new Batman with a whole new identity. (In the upcoming Earth-2 Annual) Does that mean we will be getting an all new Superman and Wonder Woman as well, with different people assuming those names and identities?

RobinsonNo, Batman’s going to be it.

DC's recently given us our first look at the new Earth-2 Batman.
DC’s recently given us our first look at the new Earth-2 Batman.

Geekscape-It seems in other interviews you’ve mentioned other classic Justice Society characters like Hourman and Wildcat as all eventually appearing in Earth-2, but the one I haven’t heard mentioned at all is The Spectre. Do you have plans for him? Or is he off limits to you?

RobinsonHe’s not completely off limits, it’s just that for now, they have plans for him on the main Earth. When we begin at some point in the future to have more interaction between the two Earths, I would definitely like to bring the Spectre in and use him. Because as I’ve said to (DC Editor-In-Chief) Dan Didio, just like there is only one lot of New Gods (in the Multiverse) there aren’t Earth-1 versions of them and Earth-2 versions of them, and in my mind there is only one version of “God” (for the whole DC Multiverse) In the DC Universe, however you might feel about faith or atheism or believing in God, if you live on a DC world that has a Deadman and a Spectre and Phantom Stranger on it (all agents of a Judeo-Christian God in the comics) there is no way you can deny the existence of God. There aren’t multiple versions of God.

GeekscapeWell, Mr. Terrific does! (Michael Holt, the modern-era Mr. Terrific, is an avowed atheist.)

Robinson-Well, that’s one of things I’ve never quite bought about that character. If there is one God, then there is only one Angel of Vengeance for God (which is the Spectre) so it makes sense that he would come to Earth-2 at some point.

Thanks again to James Robinson for taking the time out to talk to us.

Nothing get me more excited than a male power fantasy (except maybe a female power fantasy), and independent powerhouse Dark Horse Comics is ready to give me more of what a want! Today, the publisher officially announced that fan-favorite Conan creative team—writer Timothy Truman, artist Tomás Giorello, and colorist José Villarrubia—are set to adapt Robert E. Howard‘s novel, The Hour Of The Dragon into two, six-issue mini-series. The Hour Of The Dragon is Howard’s only novel-length story about the Cimmerian barbarian.

Here’s what Dark Horse teases about the serials:

King Conan has faced many threats to his throne in Aquilonia—but none more deadly than a traitorous alliance backed by the resurrected sorcerer Xaltotun, at whose command mountains crumble!

The first series shall be called The Hour Of The Dragon and will begin May 29, running through October of this year. The story continues in King Conan: The Conqueror, beginning February of 2014. What a great way to prepare for Schwarzenegger’s pending return to the character in The Legend Of Conan!

IDW is launching a new monthly X-Files series. Sure, it’s set after the underwhelming events of I Want to Believe, but I’ve got high hopes for this one. The new series is set to launch this June, while reprints of older books (released between 1995 and 2009) will be released before then.

From the press release:

Over two movies and two hundred television episodes, THE X-FILES, is a juggernaut of science fiction-tinged intrigue, unique characters and carefully constructed stories. The show’s popularity raged into the comic world, seeing successful series mounted by publishers Topps and Wildstorm. Despite this, new publishing has not been available since 2009’s joint Wildstorm/IDW crossover – 30 Days of Night/The X-Files – leaving fans without a venue for the continuing sequential adventures of Mulder and Scully… until now.

No word yet on who will write or illustrate the new book. Are you excited for this? Or would you prefer that Mulder and Scully stay retired?

It’s the time to recap the week’s news and events with The Week In Comics! There wasn’t a lot of news this week in regards to comics but there was some pretty big news to report.

Jame Tynion IV Taking Over Writing Duties On Red Hood & The Outlaws

Red Hood And The Outlaws has been one of the New 52’s best titles so far and it looks like it’s getting even better. James Tynion IV (Talon) will be taking over writing duties after Lobdell finishes up his final story arc. [via Bleeding Cool]

Eddie Brock To Become The New “Toxin”

It’s been revealed that Eddie Brock will be returning to the Marvel Universe. But Brock won’t be coming back as Venom nor will he return as Anti-Venom. No, Brock will be returning as a new incarnation of Toxin, and will definitely be coming head to head with The Superior Spider-Man in the future. Cullen Bunn on Eddie Brock as the new Toxin: [via Newsarama]

You’ll start getting glimpses of him before issue #31, but in #31, Toxin returns. There are a lot of people who say, “Eddie Brock should be the only Venom. He’s the only person worthy of being Venom.” My goal, as lofty as it may be, is, I really want people to forget about Eddie as Venom. What [artist] Declan [Shalvey] and I are trying to do is, once we tell this story, I want people to associate Eddie Brock with Toxin.

It’s a lofty goal, because he has such a big history with Venom, but a lot of people really liked when he was Anti-Venom. We want to make Toxin a viable, interesting, dynamic character on his own — the Eddie/Toxin combo, or “Broxin” as I’ve seen him referred. [Laughs.] Our goal is to really make people love and hate and fear Toxin, and Eddie Brock.

When Eddie and Toxin were bonded in “Savage Six,” he was almost like this mindless killing machine. That is not the Toxin you are going to see. I don’t want to say he’s solidly a villain, but for Venom, at least, he is solidly an antagonist. The one thing that Eddie and Toxin have in common is that they both hate Venom — both the symbiote and the man. That solidifies their partnership to some degree.

New Mystery Series Coming From From Brian Wood And Oliver Coipel

This image was tweeted earlier by writer Brian Wood. The future of Marvel is XX? Coming this April is a new series from Brian Wood and Oliver Coipel. One would assume by the X’s that it’s a new X-title. But, we’ve been wrong before. Then again…does the DNA kind of give it away? An official announcement regarding the title will be made some time in the next month.

Phil Noto Taking Over Art Duties On Thunderbolts

Not a fan of the art on the new Thunderbolts title? Well, don’t worry because starting in March the title will see a new artist. Phil Noto (Uncanny X-Force) will be taking over with issue #7 this March. Will he be bring new life to the title or just Frank Castle’s sex life? [via IGN]

Check back with us again next week as we recap the biggest news and events of the week.

Welcome to The Week In Comics, an all-new recap and rundown of the week’s news and events in comics. It may have been a slow week as far as releases, but it definitely was still a huge week due to two issues that hit the shelves.

Introducing The Superior Spider-Man!:

This week we were introduced to The Superior Spider-Man in issue #700 (also the final issue) of Amazing Spider-Man. If you haven’t check it out yet, read what I think about the character and why you should actually be excited for this in “The Superior Spider-Man: The Character You’re Going To Love To Hate” here.

Both issue #700 of Amazing Spider-Man and Avenging Spider-Man #15.1 flew off of shelves this Wednesday, with Avenging Spider-Man #15.1 now running around $15 on eBay, and have gone into second printing already. Below (courtesy of MTV Geek) you can check out Humberto Ramos second print variant for issue #700, an homage to Todd McFarlane’s cover from Amazing Spider-Man #300. Trust me when I say this, if you’re a collector do not sleep on this one because it will fly off of shelves as well.

Excelsior! Stan “The Man” Lee Turns 90:

And while on the subject of Spider-Man, we should also take a moment to wish a happy birthday to one of the men behind the creation of the character. A very happy 90th birthday to Stan “The Man” Lee!

“Thrones Of Atlantis” Begins:

Over on the DC shelf this week we saw the start of “Thones Of Atlantis”, the crossover event between Justice League and Aquaman. And if that last panel in #15 of Aquaman was any indication, this may be one event that you do not want to miss.

Could Wally West Be Coming To The DCnU In 2013?:

Now, don’t get your hopes too much yet over this next one but there’s a chance that we may finally see fan-favorite Flash Wally West joining the DCnU next year. It was revealed a bit back that current Flash writers Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato had a plan to bring the character to the DCnU, but there hasn’t been much talk about it since then. Dan Didio, DC’s Senior VP and Executive Editor, however made an interesting Facebook post earlier in the week.

Merry Christmas to Everyone!
Even you Wally. maybe I’ll see you in the New Year.

While this is no form of actual confirmation it is definitely interesting that he would include that there randomly. With Manupal and Buccellato revealing that we will be seeing the reverse flash coming next year, how could would it be if it turned out to be Wally West?

Like I said, this was definitely a small week due to the holidays. But definitely check back with us next week as we recap all the news and events coming to your local long box.

Upon Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm, questions arose regarding the current Star Wars comics that are currently being released by Dark Horse Comics. Would we continue to see the release of Star Wars comics through Dark Horse or would they cease after the contract with Lucasfilm ran out in 2013? Well, no big surprise here. Disney has decided to not renew that contract with Dark Horse and instead will return the titles to Marvel.

The Suits in the know have determined that no new contracts will be given to Dark Horse after the current ones expire. So all new projects after 2013 will be handled internally by Marvel.

It’s not known yet if titles will be worked into the regular line up, or will Marvel create a special branch of the company that deals with Star Wars. It’ll take a couple of years for the old deals to work there course, but the stories that Dark Horse have coming down the pipeline will be the last. And you can expect anything new from Marvel dealing with Star Wars to arrive around 2015.

I don’t think I’m going out on a limb in saying that we can definitely expect some Marvel Star Wars titles to be hitting shelves around 2015, which just so happens to be the same year that Star Wars: Episode VII is scheduled to be hitting theaters.

Looking for some last minute Christmas gifts for that comic book fan or art connoisseur in your life? If they like their comics edgy, you should definintely check out Something Animal and Identity Thief, both produced by Fanboy Comics.

Something Animal follows a young man named Jack who witnesses the brutal murder of his sister. In struggling to cope with the aftermath, Jack has trouble eating and sleeping. He begins to have overpowering visions of his sister’s death and eventually starts hallucinating. Is his ailment simply in his head or is he himself turning into SOMETHING ANIMAL!?

Identity Thief opens with Craig and Daphne, a young couple moving into a new apartment. Craig needed to escape from some bad decisions, and everything appears to be going  smoothly until they notice a strange hatch in the closet ceiling. Something’s up there, and it wants more than to just visit.

Both graphic novels have an extremely raw style of art. Something Animal was illustrated by Robert Burrows and her unique style adds to the visceral underworld that Jack travels through. Identity Thief was illustrated by Meaghan O’Keefe and its style creates a creepy world that makes your skin crawl as you read it.

Both graphic novels have many dark panels that can make it a difficult to discern what is actually going on, but they further emphasize the horror aspect of each.

Fanboy Comics strives to provide an outlet to new and up-and-coming artists and writers who want to create new works and media. They have definitely done that with their first (Something Animal) and latest (Identity Thief) graphic novels. If you like new and original material that is not your cookie cutter comic or standard graphic novel, I suggest keeping a close eye on Fanboy Comics!

You know the drill by now. Telltale releases a new episode of The Walking Dead, and Geekscape gets a zombie hard-on about it while swearing we’re not on the company’s payroll (really… we’re not!).

If you’re hoping for anything different this time around, you might as well go read something else (I’d recommend our weekly Walking Dead column, or at least something on Geekscape). Or you could simply put up with it and listen to how freaking INCREDIBLE this experience was, especially now that it’s come to an end. And what an end it was.

So let’s get to it! There will be light spoilers ahead, so I’d refrain from reading until you’ve finished the episode!

The first chapter of Telltale’s The Walking Dead launched just seven months ago, but it feels as though it’s been years: it seems so long ago that Lee was a prisoner in that police cruiser: it’s been nearly a lifetime since he found Clementine hidden in that treehouse: ages have passed since the group was starving in the motor pool: Duck and Katjaa left us abruptly so very, very long ago. This is a testament to the unparalleled character design of the title: none of these individualss existed just seven months ago, but now each and every one of them seems so real and so different than when we were first introduced to them. The simple fact that I feel as though I personally knew these characters is an accomplishment that in my opinion, no other game has achieved before. And it’s also why it’s so hard to say goodbye to them (and we’ve said goodbye to most of them)!

Eerie, intense, and climactic, from the first moment to the last.

As amazing as Telltale’s The Walking Dead is, it’s also an extremely hard game to review. Not because I don’t know what to score it or something silly like that, but because if I reveal one major spoiler and one person decides to read this before playing, I’ve ruined the entire experience, and I wouldn’t wish that upon my worst enemy (well, maybe that one ex-girlfriend). The Walking Dead is all about your experience. Not how it ended for me, not the decisions that I made, but you, and only you. It’s like The Sixth Sense: you don’t walk around asking people if they’ve seen it, and then blurt out the twist if they say that they haven’t. If that sounds like something you would do, then you’re an awful person and I hope someone ruins this game for you, but it’s not going to be me.

Someone ruined ‘The Sixth Sense’ for me… I’m still bitter about it. So I won’t be ruining The Walking Dead game for you here.

As the fourth chapter, Around Every Corner, came to a close, our survivors were left in pretty dire straights. The final moments of the episode were among the most jaw dropping we’d seen so far: a horde of walkers on route to Savannah, Clementine kidnapped, and Lee with a fresh walker-bite on his wrist… Yes. The main character… that you’re playing as! LEE WAS BITTEN! HOW COULD THAT HAPPEN!?

I had so many extreme emotions going through me in those closing moments. I was angry because I liked the character so much, and unless his hand was quickly removed (which these survivors don’t have a clue about), things were not going to end well. At the same time, I was excited: it’s not often that games surprise me anymore, and this was something that I never, ever saw coming. Where could things possibly go from there? This had to have a happy ending, right? After all this game had put me through, I really should have known better.

If Lee doesn’t make it, these two would make pretty great parents.

No Time Left fittingly wastes no time getting started. Within moments, we’re forced to make arguably the toughest, most cringe-inducing decision of the entire game’s duration. A decision has to be made about Lee’s bite, and just like the beginning of Episode 2, during Ben’s introduction with the bear-trap, the decision to remove a limb is a tough and grisly one (and one that Telltale is going to make us experience every moment of). As disturbing as AMC’s The Walking Dead can sometimes be, you’re still just a passive TV viewer. Here, you’re not just watching, you’re making every tough decision, stabbing every walker, removing every limb with a bone-saw and oftentimes worse. Your choices effect the group, it’s your fault when others die, and it’s you and the people close to you that will suffer if you make a bad decision (and you’ll make lots of them). In writing this review, I realized that I often spent more time thinking about how to react to something while playing The Walking Dead than I do in real life. That’s another testament to how well this game is crafted: I’m constantly worried that something I say will be taken the wrong way, and I sincerely care about what these character’s think of me. Is that messed up or what?

In another intense moment, the horde hits Savannah.

No Time Left takes The Walking Dead‘s already fantastic presentation, and somehow makes it even better. It’s hard to put a finger on, but something here just felt different, maybe because it was a constant process of saying goodbye to characters we’ve grown to love. Vocal performances were nearly perfect (as they have been in every episode), and music and sound effects were also at their best. The cinematography of this episode is what really impressed me: as Lee escaped up the hospital’s elevator shaft in the introduction, with light rays shining through the dusty halls of each walker infested floor, I realized that the world of The Walking Dead has never been more beautiful.

Unfortunately, No Time Left was also the shortest episode of the bunch. I say unfortunately only because while I couldn’t wait to see the conclusion and where our characters would end up, it was an experience that I never wanted to end. The plot of the episode is the rescue of Clementine from her unknown kidnapper and the story makes a straight b-line to this confrontation. While short, the pacing of this episode is perfect, and I felt as though if a single moment had been cut, we’d be losing out on something meaningful. Every line of dialogue, every tough decision I was forced to make (did they seem tougher than ever to anyone else?), every second that passed was absolutely essential to the plot and understanding of this bleak, bleak finale.

And the finale is bleak. As I said earlier, chances of a happy ending to this story ended when you pressed the ‘Start’ button. Even though the episode was the shortest, it also includes the best moment in the entire series (of which there were many): Lee coming face to face with Clementine’s kidnapper. This sequence not only ties the entire series together, it also plays completely on the specific decisions that the player has made going back to the beginning of the first episode. It’s an incredible, self-referential moment that twisted all of my previous choices and threw them back in my face. While it brought back some very dark memories, the sequence acted as both a story summation, a psychological profile and a chess game at the same time. I don’t recall another game that had ever put me in that position before and it’s yet another testament to how the Walking Dead has taken the Adventure Game genre to another level.

As always, I played the PS3 version of the game. As is common with playing The Walking Dead on the platform (again, I’ve only played on PS3, so I can’t vouch for other versions), there were occasional technical issues that kept the game from being perfect. For me, the framerate dropped a little more often than I’d have liked, and as I’ve mentioned before, there were sometimes brief pauses while the console loaded the next camera angle. Annoying and distracting, but not nearly enough to be very detrimental to the experience.

This isn’t the saddest thing we’d see this episode.

As the episode progressed I slowly realized how things were going to end and I was both shocked and helplessly drawn to the inevitable. When the time finally came and my assumptions were correct, it hit me much harder than I’d expected and for the first time ever, a video game brought tears to my eyes. Yes. Actual tears.

As the final lines were spoken and the game faded to black for the first time without a ‘To Be Continued’ message, I realized that I couldn’t have asked for a better conclusion. The credits rolled and I was mesmerized, frozen. The Walking Dead was not only the best game I’d play this year, but one of the best gaming experiences of my entire life. I just can’t believe it’s over.

Thanks Lee. Thanks Clementine. Thanks Telltale.

I can’t wait to experience it all again. I can’t wait to make different decisions just to see how things turn out. Most of all, I can’t wait for the announced Season Two!

The Walking Dead: Episode 5 – No Time Left scores a heartbroken 5/5.

PS: Make sure to stay through the credits. You can thank me later.

I haven’t had a chance to read it yet so I can’t vouch for the quality, but Steve Niles gets me excited, and this deal is simply to good not to mention.

Niles, co-creator of the phenomenal 30 Days of Night (comic of course, not the movie), has just made free the digital trade paper back of his latest work, Edge of Doom. He describes the miniseries as “basically four short stories about monsters and horror”, so it’s right up his alley!

I’ve heard great things about the title, and the price literally could not be lower, so check it out and let us know what you think!

You can read Steve’s post about Edge of Doom here, and here is a direct link to the trade. It’s waiting for me on my iPad now, I just hope I can read it sooner rather than later!

In this month’s Vampirella vs. Fluffy the Vampire Killer, writer Mark Rahner continues his series of Vampirella one-shots, taking Vampi into the worlds of current vampire fandoms. Previously, in Vampirella Annual 2, we witnessed Vampirella venture to the fictional city of Spoons, where she went to a convention for Gloaming, the in-universe equivalent of Twilight, and battled the fans and characters of the franchise (based, in part, by Rahner’s own experience in Forks, WA). This time , Vampirella is pitted against a satirical version of the much beloved pop-culture alluding, cheer leading, vampire slaying Buffy Summers. And. It. Is. Awesome.

Granted, my lack of love for Joss Whedon is well documented, so it may be hard for me to not actively fangasm all over this particular book for poking fun at the Buffyverse. That said, I do believe any Whedonite who can take a light jab at his or her fandom will thoroughly enjoy this book as much as anyone who isn’t all that familiar with the Slayer and her universe. Which is to say: a lot. It truly is a book for just about anyone, except maybe children (there’s a sufficient amount of blood and gore) and die hard religious conservatives (but they don’t read comics, right?).

Here’s the gist of the story: Vampirella goes undercover as a teacher (cue: multiple jokes and references to Van Halen’s Hot for Teacher) at a high school that is located right on top of an occult portal to Hell (insert: snide comments about government and improper use of tax dollars). Luckily for the town, peppy Fluffy and her friends Xtanley and Sallow, along with her Minder Miles, all attend or are employed by the school and therefore have been able to handle the supernatural situation up to this point. However, a new group of demonic (im)Puritans are mutilating the sexually active members of the student body in order to unleash the wrath of a greater demon, who gets his power from sexual repression, onto the world. And as “Abstinence Education Week” is in full swing at the school, there’s a lot of pent up sexual frustration going on. Whatever shall the teen-aged vampire killers do?

In addition to Fluffy and company, Whedonites may even be able to spy their beloved creator hidden somewhere in the story, as well.

The dialogue is plenty clever, even with—or perhaps because of—the forced puns and dated music and film references. I found myself genuinely laughing and giddy throughout. Even so, my favorite line is actually an on-the-nose statement about feminism, particularly reactionary to Whedon’s brand of female hero.:

After countless jabs from Fluffy regarding Vampirella’s scanty costume, Vampi finally states, “Empowerment means I can wear whatever I want and kill anyone who has a problem with it.”

While killing isn’t exactly an option in the real world, the sentiment is understood. Clothes, or lack thereof, should not be the focus or the excuse of any attacks on a person (from slut shaming to “forcible” rape). But that’s a different article entirely.

Like all satire worth its salt—and any decent horror story—, Vampirella Vs. Fluffy the Vampire Killer is more than just wildly entertaining. It addresses serious real world problems, as well. While playfully jabbing at the Whedonverse, critical hits are dealt to the United States’ ultra-conservative movement’s war on education and sex via the “Abstinence Week” setting, the demons’ M.O., and even a line of dialogue from Sallow that is poignant and painful in retrospect. It’s too much of a spoiler to disclose here, so pick up the book. Seriously. I’d love to discuss the themes further.

Finally, the art. While Nick Bradshaw‘s cover serves its purpose, interior artist Cesar Razek (Zorro) is pitch perfect, rendering gorgeous, in addition to some truly gruesome, images. While Vampirella, Fluffy, et al, are of course comic book beautiful (as are the men in the story), his style here is decidedly not cheesecake, which is always a relief. I love my female heroes and I will defend to the death (in true Voltaire fashion) their honor and right to style to any non-comic reader or slut shaming jerk, no matter the artist or the writer. Nevertheless, it certainly makes my job easier when I don’t have to do so in view of 20 consecutive panels of pure T&A and back breaking poses. So thank you, Mr. Razek for that. I hope to see your art again in the near future.

If you are looking for something fun and bloody, clever and violent, all the while remaining culturally relevant, then Vampirella vs. Fluffy the Vampire Killer is most certainly the book for you this Hallowednesday (see what I did there?).

Vampirella vs. Fluffy the Vampire Killer is out Oct. 24 from Dynamite Entertainment. Look for it at your local comic book shop!
