THE LUDOCRATS

Ludocrats

Kieron Gillen (The Wicked + The Divine, Phonogram), David Lafuente (Ultimate Comics: Spider-man), Jim Rossignol, Ricardo Venancio

“The Ludocrats is a decade-in-the-making opulent fantastical comedy,” said writer of THE WICKED + THE DIVINE and PHONOGRAM, Kieron Gillen, “This is a book which has hyperbole as its baseline, and considers the impossible as an aim only fitting for underachievers. It’ll change your life. Primarily by letting you own a comic called The Ludocrats, where BARON OTTO VON SUBERTAN and PROFESSOR HADES ZERO-K are the last defenders of a ludicrous aristocracy against the insipid forces of normalisation.”

THE LUDOCRATS will launch in Summer 2015.

MONSTRESS

Monstress

PAPER GIRLS

PaperGirls

PHONOGRAM

Phonogram

W: Kieron Gillen (The Wicked + The Divine, Young Avengers), A: Jamie McKelvie (The Wicked + The Divine, Young Avengers)

Emily Aster’s the hyper-acerbic cover-queen whose one liners are sharper than her fringe; she’s been the one people love and love to quote. In this new chapter of the PHONOGRAM series, readers discover how she got that way, and where it got her. She sold half her personality for power. This is what happens when that faustian deal catches up with her, and what that half her personality has been doing all these years.

PHONOGRAM will launch in 2015.

PLUTONA

Plutona

W: Jeff Lemire, A: Emi Lenox, Jordie Bellaire

PLUTONA follows the story of five suburban kids who make a shocking discovery while exploring the woods one day after school… the body of the world’s greatest super hero, Polara, laying dead among the mud and grass.

PLUTONA will launch in 2015.

PRETTY DEADLY

MARVELCoverTemp copy.indt

W: Kelly Sue DeConnick (Bitch Planet, Captain Marvel), A: Emma Ríos (Pretty Deadly)

In this second story arc of PRETTY DEADLY, the mantle of Death has fallen to a little girl, Sissy, who, along with her tattered band of reapers, is tasked with gathering souls whose time has come, or come and passed. An old woman has a dying request. Her son has been missing for more than a year, gone east, and from there to fight in the trenches overseas. She wants to see the boy one last time before she passes. And so Deathface Ginny is dispatched through clouds of mustard gas to find the young man, but between her and her quarry, atop bitter black mount of twenty hands, sits the Reaper of War himself.

PRETTY DEADLY will launch in September 2015.

REVENGEANCE

Revengeance

Darwyn Cooke

REVENGEANCE is a psychological thriller with darkly humorous overtones. When Joe Malarky is faced with a criminal tragedy, he sets out to make things right on his own. What follows is Joe’s odyssey through the underside of the city and the madness that seems to drive his crazy world.

REVENGEANCE will launch in June 2015.

RUN LOVE KILL
Eric Canete (The End League, Iron Man: Enter the Mandarin), Jon Tsuei (Comic Book Tattoo), Leonardo Olea, Manu Fernandez
The story follows a wanted woman in hiding named Rain Oshiro. The narrative style will prominently feature two very different but significantly connected moments throughout her life: “The Past”—which will explore her history as an impressionable student, an abiding soldier, and a wanted fugitive; and “The Present”—which will show her as she is now and how she copes with (and runs away from) the decisions made in her past. At its core, the story is an exploration of choices—both good and bad. And now, how her choices have formed her into the person she has and will become. Set against a background of a futuristic world as only artist Canete can imagine, Rain has just 24 hours to escape a barricaded city while trying to evade a military force determined to either capture or kill her.
RUN LOVE KILL will launch Spring 2015.

SAVIOR
W: Todd McFarlane, Brian Holguin (SPAWN, Mr. Majestic), A: Clayton Crain (X-Force)
A man appears with no background, no memory, and no place to call home. But this much is clear—this individual possesses certain powers, abilities that harken from the Old Testament… Could he possibly be this corrupted world’s SAVIOR in the flesh? Or will he be the world’s undoing?
SAVIOR will launch in April 2015.

SONS OF THE DEVIL
Brian Buccellato and Toni Infante
SONS OF THE DEVIL is a dark look at a blue collar 25-year-old orphan who learns he is the son of a cult leader. Like True Detective and The Following, SONS OF THE DEVIL is an exploration into the dark side of human psychology. It’s a grounded take on cults that balances the real world with the supernatural.

STARVE
Brian Wood (Star Wars, DMZ, The Massive), Danijel Zezelj (Northlanders, Loveless), & Dave Stewart (The Walking Dead, Star Wars)
STARVE is set in a world where chefs are practically royalty, and access to them is the ultimate status symbol. Chef Gavin Cruikshank, back from self-imposed exile, finds his little foodie television program “Starve” transformed into a gonzo arena sport where chefs slice and dice rare and endangered species for their super-rich patrons. Since his personal life is as much a shambles as his professional career, Chef Cruikshank works to repair his relationship with his grown daughter while dismantling the monstrosity that Starve has become.

TADAIMA
Emi Lenox (EMITOWN)
Throughout childhood, Emi visited her Grandmother in Japan frequently. But through the years of high school and after, she hadn’t been back in nearly twelve years. Sadly, within those twelve years, both her Japanese grandparents passed away. TADAIMA is a travelogue documenting a trip back to Japan with her mother for a memorial service to renew the sobota, a wooden grave marker, at her grandparents’ tomb in Fukushima. Touching on Japanese spirituality and cultural differences, TADAIMA is more than a book about landmarks and foreign cuisine. It’s about family.

WE STAND ON GUARD
W: Brian K. Vaughan (Saga, Ex Machina), A: Steve Skroce (Doc Frankenstein, storyboard artist for The Matrix and Jupiter Ascending)
WE STAND ON GUARD is an action-packed, military thriller set in the 22nd century. The series follows a heroic band of Canadian civilians-turned-freedom fighters who take up arms against a violent invasion of their country by a technologically superior nation: the United States of America.

HEAVEN
James Robinson (The Saviors) and Phillip Tan (Spawn, Uncanny X-Men)
HEAVEN introduces readers to a distant future where the forces or man and alien combined have used religion to conquer this universe and are now ready, about to invade the next one — Heaven itself. The “Good War” between man and angel will span galaxies and dimensions, building to a final conflict that threatens to negate all of reality itself. Along the way many players on both sides of the war will be featured; soldiers, spies and politicians all with different goals and agendas even as their two distinct and differing realities explode around them.

Oofta! There you have it. What are titles are you excited for in 2015? Let us know in the comments below!

2014 is very quickly coming to a close, and it’s crazy to look back at what an iconic year its been for movies, music, gaming, books, and, of course, comics. But there’s just so much stuff to see, play, listen to, and read, that it’s impossible for some superb media to fall through the cracks. That’s why Jonathan and Karson, Geekscape’s biggest comic geeks, have teamed up to tell you the top comic book series that you should have been reading this year.

Did they miss any? Read through, and be sure to give us your suggestions in the comments below.

Jonathan London

2014 was a big year for me as far as comics go. Not only was it filled with some of the best reading I can remember, but my first written series saw publication. Lionforge Comics published Miami Vice from March through November and the 8 issues mini-series (to be followed soon by a second) helped me stick my big toe into comic book writing in a big way! You should all be reading some of the awesome Lionforge books (may I suggest Night Trap by Cullen Bunn?) and hopefully this time next year we’ll be talking about more Super Action Man and Miami Vice comics and who knows what else!

So now that my bias towards putting Miami Vice on this list has been avoided, here’s what I loved reading this year (with many books left off for the sake of keeping this to a manageable length)!

Birthright by Joshua Williamson, Andrei Bressan

Birthright

Looking at it, there is a lot of fantasy on my list… and a lot of Image Comics! Why not? I mean, the publisher is putting out quality stories at an all time high and should be known for more than just The Walking Dead and Saga. Take Birthright for instance, the story of a missing child who returns a year later as a full grown barbarian warrior claiming to have spent his childhood being raised on an alternate fantasy world. If that doesn’t hook you, Bressan’s art definitely will. Only 3 issues have come out so you can still jump on the bandwagon!

The Autumnlands: Tooth & Claw by Kurt Busiek, Ben Dewey and Jordie Bellaire

ToothClaw

Yet another Image published fantasy series… but this one has anthropomorphized animals performing magic incantations in the hopes of fixing their broken world! And within just the first 2 issues, things appear to be getting a LOT more broken before they’ll ever start turning around (if they do). It goes without saying that you should read anything Kurt Busiek writes and this is Busiek at his best.

Manifest Destiny by Chris Dingess and Matthew Roberts

ManifestDestiny01_cover2

Another Image book, this one from The Walking Dead publisher Skybound. Anyone who’s been to grade school in the US knows the story of Louis and Clark and their mapping of the Western territories ahead of Westward Expansion… but what if the stories you read in school were only part of the truth? What if the Western United States in the early 1800s were teaming with things like tribes of violent Buffalo Centaurs and hungry men eating fungi? This book is one of the most fun titles I read all year and is a completely insane take on actual historic events. I’m pretty sure after reading it you’ll accept this more exciting version as fact!

The Amazing Spider-Man: Spider-Verse by Dan Slott and Oliver Coipel

Amazing_Spider-Man_Vol_3_9

In 2014, the best comic book event from the Big 2 comic book publishers wasn’t Axis, Time Runs Out, Multiversity or Future’s End! Heck, it didn’t even span more than ONE title (so you can’t really call it a crossover unless you really want to read the spin-off books)! It all went down (and is still going down) in The Amazing Spider-Man, as part of the months long Spider-Verse storyline. The story stretches across the Marvel multiverse but does it in a way that is easy to follow, exciting and has long reaching repercussions for the future of the Marvel U. Major characters die, others are introduced and the stakes can’t be higher for the #1 hero in the Marvel Universe. If you’re worried about taking the plunge, read our handy guide to the Spider-Verse and give this story a try.

Batgirl by Brenden Fletcher, Cameron Stewart and Babs Tarr

Batgir

I’ll admit, when I first flipped through this book at NYCC I thought there was no way I was going to start reading it. And no, not because it’s Batgirl. And not because of its cuter, more teen girl look. I just couldn’t wrap my head around reading a story that played out like multiple IM windows jumping in your face at once. How could this A.D.D.-riddled collection of pop up balloons, fonts and panels result in an engaging (or even cohesive) story? It looked more like a manic Youtube video than a comic book. Well, I have to tell you that it DOES and it WORKS. Batgirl brings a level of freshness and dynamic storytelling that is much needed in the current New-52 landscape of the DCU.

The Fade Out by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips

p27

If you’re going to be reading comics, you need to be reading anything that Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips put out. The duo, who have been kicking ass on books like Criminal, Incognito, Fatale and Sleeper for almost two decades have long since hit their stride as the best in comics. Nowhere is this more apparent than the first few issues of The Fade Out, a story of murder and cover up set against the backdrop of the early days of Hollywood.

Punisher by Nathan Edmondson
Black Widow by Nathan Edmondson and Phil Noto

BlackWidow

I’m going to put these together because they both make up Nathan Edmondson’s coming out party at Marvel. Granted, I picked up Black Widow because I’m a fan of Phil Noto’s beautiful artwork, and Punisher because he’s one of my favorite characters and has a solid track list of writers for years, but Edmondson and company are put out issues in both series that should not be ignored. Sure, there are bigger writers at Marvel who are putting out more popular work, but these two titles are right up there with the best quality you’ll find. Frank Castle’s story bring him to Los Angeles where he goes head to head with gangs and villains like Electro and Crossbones… all while being tracked down by the modern day Howling Commandos. And Natasha Romanov is in search of redemption (and answers) after years of playing both sides of the Cold War. Her cast of characters and resources have been stripped down and she’s spent most of the series on the run. By taking both characters out of their safety zones and away from the same recurring rogues that have been defined them for years, Edmondson has gotten to the bottom of what make both of these characters work.
Outcast by Robert Kirkman and Paul Azaceta
Just when you start thinking of Robert Kirkman as “the zombie guy” he proves it wrong with Invincible. And when Invincible proves that he’s got a firm grasp on superheroes, here comes East of West. And to really drive home the fact that Kirkman is one of the most dynamic storytellers in comics today, this year saw the release of Outcast, a story about a mysterious young man who deals with possessions. I’ve been a fan of Paul Azaceta’s artwork since Grounded and his moody, chiseled depictions characters’ expressions and their real world settings are the perfect canvas for this haunting storyline. Sure, a TV show is in development. But you don’t want to wait that long to start reading a story that’s only getting deeper (and darker).

Trillium by Jeff Lemire

Trillium

Jeff Lemire can do no wrong… even when he gets really weird on you, as he does in Trillium, his science fiction story that spans from the distant future and space colonization of man to the building of the Aztec ruins. The story is told against a huge backdrop but is told in such a personal way that you won’t lose site of its strong emotional core. When faced with the threat of extinction, out among the stars and far from home, is humanity’s salvation found in our distant past? And how do we bridge that gap both as a species and as individuals? It’s heady and emotional stuff but told in a very accessible way. And Lemire’s ephemeral artwork will lead you through the story with just enough clues to guide your way but not so many that you lose your will to discover it for yourself.

Stray Bullets by Dave Lapham

Stray Bullets

2014 needs to be remembered as the year that Stray Bullets returned to comic store shelves. After going missing for a decade, Dave Lapham’s spider-web of a modern crime classic came back with a bang as both a new ongoing set of miniseries (starting with this year’s Killers) and a mega omnibus collection of everything Stray Bullets that came before. I rarely seek out signatures from professionals but one of two that I made sure to get this year was from Dave Lapham, a true writing inspiration to me (the other was from Zander Cannon, who I write about in the Bonus section). I’ve been a fan of Stray Bullets since the first issue came out (when I was in High School!) and it’s just as good as it ever was. The story is a collection of disparate and unique characters who criss cross each other’s lives against a backdrop of low level crime that stretches from the big cities to suburbia and growing up in the 70s to the modern day. It’s a pretty intricate canvas and after spending years as an effective creator for hire for the bigger comic publishers, it’s great to see Lapham back to doing what he does best.

BONUS!

Heck by Zander Cannon

Heck

This was the best Graphic Novel that I read this year. Even though it was released in 2013, I picked it up at SDCC 2014 and was completely blown away by this quirky, emotional (and sometimes hilarious) tale about venturing into the underworld in order to make peace with the afterlife… as a job! I can’t recommend this one enough.

Karson Braaten

Afterlife with Archie by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla

alwarchie1

As the title suggests, this is the story of a zombie apocalypse in the Archie universe. I’ve never read an Archie comic in my life so I was surprised by how accessible it was. There were a few times I felt that I didn’t know the significance of certain person or place but it was never a detriment to the story. In fact, it made me want more Archie! (and I’ll finally be getting my fix in the New Year with the Waid and Staples helmed Archie Relaunch). Francavilla’s masterful use of color helps create panel after panel of haunting imagery. This title is as good as any zombie story on the market.

Black Science by Rick Remender and Matteo Scalera

BlackScience

This is science fiction at it’s best. Heck, for me, this is comics at its best. The story follows a team led by anarchist scientist Grant McKay as they travel between dimensions trying to stay alive and get back home. It gets a little bonkers, reading month to month I tend to re-read the last issue before going onto the new one in an attempt to keep everything straight in my head. While his work on the more well-known Captain America and Uncanny Avengers has been great, this is the title of his to be reading.

Sex Criminals by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky

SexCriminals

Another series from Image that continued to pick up steam in 2014. This is science fiction at it’s… weirdest? Sex Criminals is the story of Suzie and Jon, a couple who meet at a party and after sleeping together realize they share the ability to freeze time when they orgasm. They use their shared power to attempt to rob a bank but not all goes as planned. Fraction’s writing is hilarious and the concepts are fresh. Zdarksy’s artwork is unique and memorable, I especially enjoy how he handles when time is stopped. I can almost guarantee you’ve never read anything like this!

Superior Spider-Man by Dan Slott, Ryan Stegman, Humberto Ramos, Giuseppe Camuncoli

SuperiorSpiderMan

I’m sure by now you’ve heard about Doctor Octopus running around in Peter Parker’s body. Seeing how Otto handled both internal and external conflict of trying to be a hero was both extremely gratifying and thought provoking. The finale was one of my favourite moments in comics this year. There was a lot of doubt and hate casted at Dan Slott by fans when this series began but issue by issue he proved it could work. Peter Parker is back now, and in more danger than ever, in Amazing Spider-Man (a title you should be reading!). It is a great time to be a Spidey fan!

Silver Surfer by Dan Slott and Mike Allred

SilverSurfer

Another book being written by Slott. This is a fun read that doesn’t require a whole lot of thinking. If you can’t get enough Doctor Who, this might be the series for you as they share a similar structure. Dawn, a quirky Earth girl, accompanies the Surfer as they adventure across the universe and get mixed up in conflicts along the way. The dialogue between the characters will often having you giggling. I’ll admit, I’ve never been a big fan of Allred’s art style but he does a great job here creating looney, colourful worlds. I can’t wait to see where this series goes next!

BONUS

Oz: The Emerald City of Oz

The_Emerald_City_of_OZ_Vol_1_1_Textless

I couldn’t talk about my favourite comics without mentioning Skottie Young. I love his artwork. If he painted a wall, I’d probably enjoy watching it dry. This book is absolutely gorgeous. The story itself feels more direct and focused than the previous Oz books but like I said, this is all about the artwork for me. If The Wizard of Oz isn’t your thing, I’d recommend checking out Rocket Raccoon, another fun, easier read with Young in the artist seat.

Historically the first Saturday in May is Free Comic Book Day and next year will be no different.

Walt Siminson’s long running comic book career is nothing short of illustrious. While he is best known for his run on Thor from 1983-1987 on Thor, Siminson has also worked on such properties as X-Factor, Fantastic Four, Batman, Manhunter, Star Wars, Alien, and Battlestar Galactica. The list goes on and on and on, but before all of that there was Star Slammers.

Simonsson created Star Slammers as his Rhode Island School of Design as his thesis project in 1972. It has seen various publication through the decades but perhaps none as sweet as what’s to come.

IDW Publishing has announced Star Slammers: The Complete Collection. It will collect the graphic novel and mini-series, as well as short stories, covers, and pin-ups. And, for the first time ever, this volume will print the original version of Star Slammers.

Star Slammers: The Complete Collection is set to hit shelves in February. Have you experienced Star Slammers? Planning to pick up the collection? Let us know in the comments below!

Rarely does a group of creators come together that have as much passion for their product than the team behind COMIX: Beyond The Comic Book Pages.

Way back in April, I met with the creators of COMIX at WonderCon. There they showed me a clip of their upcoming Documentary.

I was instantly impressed, everything felt very candid and the little that I saw of interviews were great. It reminded me a lot of our own Doc of The Dead.

Check out the trailer for COMIX below!

COMIX: Beyond the Comic Book Pages is an exciting new feature film documentary about the world of comic books told through the thoughts and images of the creators, artists, writers, collectors, store owners, independent publishers, and especially the passionate fans who have made it the phenomenon that it is today.

COMIX includes exclusive one-on-one interviews with icons from the comic book industry, like Stan Lee (Spiderman, X-Men, Fantastic Four), Frank Miller (Sin City, 300), Neal Adams (Batman, X-Men, Green Lantern/Green Arrow), Mark Waid (Kingdom Come, Superman, Justice League of America), Mike Richardson of Dark Horse Productions (Hellboy, Sin City, Goon, and Concrete), Marc Silvestri of Image Comics and Top Cow Productions (Tomb Raider, Hunter Killer, Witchblade), and Todd McFarlane (Spawn). COMIX also includes interviews with fans, many dressed in full costume, as they talk about their love for the characters and cosplay, at conventions like Comic-Con, Wizard World, and more.

The list of people involved with this project is amazing, and with a group of creators like this there is no reason for you to NOT help this Documentary.

Of all the cool things that I was able to do last year, going to Stan Lee’s Comikaze was definitely one of the highlights. Yep, San Diego Comic-Con was incredible, but due to its sheer size and massive attendance, it becomes nothing but a line convention at times, and beyond stressful at others.

Comikaze, on the other hand, is nothing but fun. It’s huge, but not unbearably so. Tons (and) tons of people go, but you still have the freedom to move around the well-spaced show floor and not feel like you’re in a tin of sardines. Panels (even popular ones) are actually attendable without waiting in line for 24 hours, and just like SDCC, the guests are stellar (oh, and don’t even get my started on the nearby Lawry’s Carvery).

I’m a comic book guy, so the guest list that I’m always the most excited about is definitely the comic book pros. This year’s comic book guest list is stacking up to be nothing less than stellar. Some of the highlights include:

Brian Michael Bendis
Rob Liefeld
John Romita Jr.
Joe Jusko
Len Wein
Jim Lee
Peter David
Kevin Smith
J. Scott Campbell
Greg Horn
Whilce Portacio

But that’s just a fraction of who’s attending, and again, that’s just comic book guests. Here’s the full list. Tickets for Comikaze are available now, but special VIP options are going fast!

We’ll be sharing our Comikaze plans soon, but for now, be sure to let us know who you’re excited to see!

CW has released a new promo for The Flash. The promo named “My Name Is…”, gave us a closer look of how the Flash’s superspeed will look in action. I’m a big fan of the Arrow series so im really excited for The Flash to premier this fall. I know there is a leaked pilot floating around on the web, but i will wait for the official debut so i can enjoy it along with everyone else.

The Flash will premier on October 7, 2014 on the CW

what do you guys think of the Flash in action?

This is very cool.

Subscription box services are all the rage right now, and Hero Chest sounds like a phenomenal option for comic book fans. If I didn’t reside in Canada, I’d definitely be subscribing to this one.

In their own words, “Hero Chest will be a curated subscription box that brings the comic shop experience to your doorstep each month. Our curators’ selections will be guided by years of comic experience and a passion for high quality comics. We want to send you titles you might not see featured in your local store or might have slipped under your radar. Most of all, we want to send you cool stuff to read! (And toys.)”

Hero

As a guy who only makes it into my LCS to pick up my pull list every month or two, I know that there’s a lot of cool stuff that I’m missing. Hero Chest could be a great way to expand my comic book horizons.

Each Hero Chest is set to contain:

– A recently released Trade Paperback (compilation of 6-10ish comic issues, usually of a single story arc in one place)
– 3 current comic books (issues) selected specifically for their quality of art and storytelling, significance and potential interestingness
– Monthly curation notes on the titles chosen for the box
– Fun surprises like t-shirts, stickers, toys, and collectibles
– And Kickstarter rewards include shipping and handling!

A beta box was put together and sent out to a few lucky Kickstarter backers, which Hero Chest has broken down on their official blog.

everythingfrombox

The Hero Chest Kickstarter campaign is a great way to get early access to what is sure to be a highly-successful product. Backers can receive access to three exclusive boxes, pick up year-long subscriptions (even for a friend), grab exclusive t-shirts, and much more.

You can head to the Kickstarter page or the official Hero Chest website for more info, and be sure to let us know if you’ll be backing this one!

Fast on the heels of the announcement that the new wielder of Mjolnir will be a woman, Marvel announced on the Colbert Report last night that the new comic book series “All New Captain America” will feature Sam Wilson–the character also known as Falcon–as Captain America, marking the first time a black character has taken on that persona.

This adds some much needed diversity to Marvel’s line-up, as Marvel’s Nick Fury from the Avengers is the only other notable character of color (though, outside the Marvel universe, the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot does have Johnny B. Storm being played by African-American actor Michael B Jordan).

Sam Wilson as Captain America in the upcoming comics.
Sam Wilson as Captain America in the upcoming comics.

Steve Rogers, the original Captain America, will remain in the comics as Sam Wilson’s mentor. Rogers was stripped of his power–and became an aged, frail man–when a long-time enemy drained the serum from him. Rogers passes the shield to Wilson.

“This is the fireworks factory we’re arriving at, and now everything’s going to blow up and be very pretty and exciting to look at,” said Rick Remender, writer of the new comic book series. “I’ve been having a lot of fun writing Sam. It’s a completely different attitude. The fact that he’s not a soldier shifts things up a bit. Sam’s not going to be Steve. Steve can be very rigid. That can be kind of joyless at times, whereas Sam is absolutely not that.”

Falcon, played by Anthony Mackie, was a pivotal character in this year’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The character was first introduced into the comics in 1969.

You can view the full announcement on The Colbert Report  here.

Philadelphia’s Wizard World Comic Con is coming this week (June 19th-22nd), and there are all kinds of exciting events happening this year! I’m headed there (as well as fellow Geekscape writer Matt Kelly) to take in the sights, and this year’s con promises to be legendary (insert Barney Stinson reference here).

The biggest event, at least in my eyes, is the fact that Doctor Who‘s Matt Smith and Karen Gillan will be in attendance. Not only are the pair doing photo ops and signings, they are also having a panel discussion about being on Doctor Who.

Karen-Matt-matt-smith-and-karen-gillan-32113623-894-595

And while Gillan is there, she will be on a Q&A panel for Guardians of the Galaxy along with fellow Guardians stars Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer), and Michael Rooker (Yondu). This should give fans some insight into the upcoming film that is sure to be a blast.

Along with Guardians, there will also be a panel discussing Captain America: Winter Soldier featuring Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Falcon) and Sebastian Stan (Bucky/The Winter Soldier).

sebastian-stan-winter-soldier-bucky-barnes-anthony-mackie-sam-wilson-the-falcon-captain-america-coming-to-philadelphia-comic-con-2

Not into time travelers or superheroes? How about horror? John Carpenter will be on hand for “Conversations with John Carpenter” which will undoubtedly give insight into the horror legend’s filmmaking career. The website says Carpenter “will greet fans, sign autographs, pose for photo ops and and conduct an interactive Q&A panel (Saturday, 4 p.m.) in which he’ll discuss his great films.”

Another interesting one is a screening of The Karate Kid, with Ralph Macchio. There’s nothing like watching a movie with one of the stars, right?

One of the bigger names at the show is Whoopi Goldberg. “Oscar® winner Whoopi Goldberg will make her Wizard World debut at Philadelphia Comic Con, June 20-21. With dozens of television and film credits, including “The View,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” Sister Act, The Color Purple, and a wide range of talents and accomplishments, Goldberg is known to millions as an actress, comedian, host, producer, author, activist, and singer-songwriter.

whoopi

Goldberg will greet fans, pose for photo ops, sign autographs and conduct an interactive Q&A entitled “A Drink With Guinan” (Saturday, 1 p.m.) at Pennsylvania Convention Center. She will appear on Friday evening and the full event day Saturday.”

Along with the usual cosplay contests, comic artists and more, this year’s show should be a blast. If you’re in the area, make sure you check it out! Be sure to head to Wizard World’s official website to get the low-down on everything else that you can expect this weekend!

Marvel Knights Animation has been putting out some incredible content lately. Their motion comics truly are works of art, and Wolverine Weapon X: Tomorrow Dies Today is something to behold. Check out the trailer below!

The future is controlled by a malevolent mega-corporation known as Roxxon — which keeps its tight grip on society through the use of cyborgs, the Deathloks, whose sole purpose is to seek out current and future vigilantes — and neutralize them with extreme prejudice. Now, in order to prevent Roxxon’s rise and the eventual slaughter of the world’s heroes, Wolverine must join forces with a mysterious woman possessing unexplained knowledge of the coming dystopia. He won’t give up until the Deathloks are stopped, but what hope is there to prevent a future that has already come to pass?

The DVD boasts a behind the scenes featurette that goes inside the creation process of a Marvel Knights animation.

You can snag  Wolverine Weapon X: Tomorrow Dies Today on DVD only at Shout! Factory on May 13th!

Just over one week ago, Geekscape TV brought you Lou Ferrigno playing Flappy Bird, and now we’re back with a fantastic conversation with the man that moulded many of our childhood memories, Stan Lee.

A few days back, Jonathan sat down with Stan to film an interview for our new YouTube channel, GeekscapeTV. Geekscape TV is a serious reimagining of our old YouTube channel (it is a different channel, so be sure to subscribe to the new one), and one that we intend to fill to the brim with original, awesome content (like the first trailer for Hero of the Prophecy, the just-remastered HD cut of Gay By Dawn, a hilarious Miami Vice spoof, and so on).

The interview features plenty of great Marvel vs. DC banter, and Stan even reveals the secret to why the Marvel movies have been so successful!

Take a look at the full interview below, let us know what you think, and be sure to subscribe to GeekscapeTV for more!

These are my big geek highlights of 2013!

SDCC 2013 – I love SDCC, and each year is different, but this year was crazy. Getting actual press credentials changes everything, and seeing some of the places and things we got to enjoy was crazy. The best part was seeing the child like wonder in Derek’s eyes, as the little Canuck from a tiny island in Canada was awed by the Geek Mecca. I remember my first SDCC, before I became jaded, and watching Derek experience the same thing was awesome. Oh yeah and getting into a fight with a Twilight fan was cool too.

Equestria Girls Movie – When the My Little Pony rumour mill started dishing out rumors of Hasbro wanting to take our favorite little Ponies, and turn them into Bratz dolls, the community flipped their shit. When a couple of leaks came out of character stills, the community flipped out again. When the trailer came out, they flipped out AGAIN. It appears the MLP fandom likes to flip out a lot, stating every little change to be the end of the world! I tried to stay off the end of the world wagon, but I got caught up in it. So when the movie finally came out and I watched it I was expecting shit. Oh boy was I surprised. It was the same old awesome writing and characters, just bipedal. The music was a blast, and all the songs were charming. I really enjoyed it.

Getting Into Comics Semi Seriously – This was the year I finally decided to become a next level geek. So I made it a goal to start reading comics. Yeah I would get a single issue here or there, or some collectible hard back copy of The Rocketeer books, but I never really got into the serials. So the last few months I have been reading as much as I can get my hands on, mostly review stuff, but I am enjoying every page of it. I have a re-purposed Kindle Fire and a bunch of digital books. I’ve been a huge anti Digital Books guy for years, but finally getting into it I have changed my mind. Being able to have all your books on you at all times is awesome. The My Little Pony comics, and everything from IDW frankly, is amazing to read. I cannot get my hands on enough!

Favorite/Best TV Series of 2013:

1. Breaking Bad—Really, there’s nothing to say that hasn’t been said. Watch, if you haven’t. rewatch, if you have.

2. Game of Thrones—It just keeps getting better and better. Pretty soon they’re going to run out of books, so George, if you’re reading…write faster!

3. Almost Human—a debut show this Fall on Fox, this is one of the 2013 season stand-outs. A fun buddy-comedy set in the near future, the show may not stretch the confines of its genre but it does what it does really well.

4. The Good Wife—After getting a little lost early in 2012, The Good Wife came back, with style, for the final half of the 2012-2013 season, and continues strong this season.

5. Brooklyn Nine-Nine—It started slow and took a few episodes to really click, but Brooklyn Nine-Nine has found its footing as a solid ensemble comedy. And Andre Braugher is flat-out phenomenal as the openly-gay Captain of the unit.

6. The Bridge—An American remake of a Danish/Swedish series, The Bridge follows an American and a Mexican detective as they try to solve a series of murders which cross into both of their jurisdictions along the Texas-Chihuahua border. Dark, somber, and a little slow, the show still manages to compel with its harsh and uncompromising look into crime, corruption and immigration on both sides of the border.

7. Da Vinci’s Demons—A Starz original, this show was fun, interesting, educational and pretty much not watched. Which is a shame, because it’s 5-parts Indiana Jones to 3-parts Bill Nye the Science Guy to 2-parts The Borgias. What could be better? Starz has renewed for a second season and you can catch up on the first via OnDemand.

8. House of Cards—Netflix’s foray into original programming proved that the traditional television paradigm is no longer the only way to make good TV. With Kevin Spacy leading an all-star cast, House of Cards provided wit, drama, some comedy and a scathing look at American politics—all streamed directly to your device of choice.

9. Supernatural—Supernatural has been on the air for nine years, and while it had a few odd moments (we’re looking at you, Season Seven), the 2012-2013 season picked up momentum and brought the boys back to their killing-bad-guys-saving-the-world-angsty-talking roots. And the 2013 season has just kept getting better. Not bad for a show older than the computer I am typing this on.

10. Community—Ok, the 2013 Winter/Spring season of Community was not its best. It was bad. The showrunners lacked the insane-right-until-its-sane genius of the ‘not-really-fired-but-he-doesn’t-work-here-anymore’ show’s creator, Dan Harmon, and the show felt…different. Like Tofu Turkey when you’re expecting a real bird. Sure, the gravy and trimmings were all there but the texture was off. It made this list, though, because Dan Harmon is back (YAY) and we have high, high hopes for the show when it airs in January.

BreakingBad

Favorite geek memories / moments of 2013:

1. The thesurvivor2299.com website/hoax. Sure it wasn’t real, but the good-natured hoax provided weeks of entertainment, puzzle decoding and rampant speculation. It also showed Bethesda (in case they weren’t aware) exactly how excited fans were about even the whiff of a possibility of a Fallout 4 announcement.

2. Disney buys Star Wars franchise, announces a writer, then a director, then a release date. I mean, sheesh. Princess Leia is now a Disney Princess. Fandoms collide!

3. Game of Thrones is the most pirated thing-ever—and breaks the internet with the infamous Red Wedding.

4. SimCity requires online play; EA forgets to make sure they have enough servers. But hey, we got a free game as an ‘apology’ gift so…

5. KHAAAAAAN. Whether you liked it, hated it, or were confused by the reference, the Star Trek reboot on a favorite villain was certainly a stand-out moment.

6. BlizzCon Roars: When announcing the new expansion, Warlords of Draenor, to their mammoth MMO, World of Warcraft, the fan reaction at BlizzCon was deafening.

Derek Kraneveldt

Favourite Comics of 2013 (in no particular order aside from #1):

Batman – Scott Snyder’s Batman is arguably the only book in the New 52 lineup that started out great, and has retained its must-read status for its entire run. This is the book that got me back into Batman after many years of ignoring the character at my LCS, and it’s also the first book that I read when I get back from picking up my weekly haul. From the Court of Owls, to Death of the Family, to Year Zero and beyond, Batman is currently DC’s best book by far. You won’t regret reading it if you haven’t already!

The Wake – You can’t go wrong with a Scott Snyder title (probably why two of them are on this list), and The Wake is no exception. The horror/sci-fi/creature feature created by Snyder and Sean Murphy is just halfway through its ten issue run, and it’s already exponentially more memorable than almost any horror film that I’ve seen this year (aside from The Conjuring). The Wake is a tale that will leave you guessing after every issue, page, and panel, and it should not be passed up by any comic reader, regardless of what you typically read.

Trillium – I’m also a sucker for Jeff Lemire (though I still need to read Sweet Tooth… yeah I know), and his epic, time-bending love story (between a World War I veteran and a botanist from the year 3797) is some of the absolute best sci-fi work in recent memory. It’s hard to talk about Trillium without spoiling it in some way, but I was hooked from the opening of its double-sided flipbook of a first issue. Like The Wake, Trillium will span just ten issues, but you’ll be hard pressed to find a better miniseries this year.

The Superior Spider-Man – I was as skeptical as anyone when Marvel announced that they were killing Peter Parker (again). Sure, BKV has done an incredible job with Miles Morales in the Ultimate Universe, but how could we live in a world without any Peter Parker, and especially a world where the evil-as-hell Doc Ock was in his body? As it turns out, Dan Slott putting Ock in Pete’s body has been some pretty damned fresh Spidey. There have been plenty of memorable moments during the series run so far (Ock finding morals, battling with his old pals, fighting with Peter’s mind, etc), and I’m sure that there’ll be plenty more before it’s finished. I’m not sure that I want Superior to go on forever (we do need Peter back one day, and issue #30 is rumoured to be the last), but for now it’s definitely my go-to Spidey book.

#1. Saga – Brian K. Vaughan’s previous book, Y: The Last Man, remains my favourite comic book series ever, but if Saga continues its incessant quality, direction, plot, and style, Y could become number two before long. Every single comic reader on this planet has been telling you to read Saga for over a year now, so freaking do it, because it is bar none the best series currently on the market. Seriously.

Saga

Favourite/Best TV Series of 2013:

1. Breaking Bad – What SJ said. It’s easily the best television series of 2013, and definitely among the best shows of all time. If you haven’t seen this yet, what the hell is wrong with you?

2. Suits – The antics of Mike Ross and Harvey Specter make for some of the best, funniest, and most touching moments on television. Mike Ross knows the law, but never went to law school, so simple things like filing for copyright and noting a subpoena elude him (at least in season one). The actors have great chemistry, the plot is gripping and exciting, and the writing is quirky and hilarious. Suits is definitely my most anticipated returning show in 2014 (except for maybe Community)

3. Bates Motel – Another series that I can’t wait to come back on air. Bates Motel began with Norma and Norman Bates moving into that fateful motel, and ended with plenty of murder, deceit and mystery. Norman’s going a little crazy, and I’d infinitely excited to see where Carlton Cuse and Co. take us next.

4. The Walking Dead – This year’s Scott Gimple led season of The Walking Dead has been the series best year yet. I’ve loved every episode so far, which is something that cannot be said for any other season. My only problem: had season three ended like we all wanted it to (pretty much verbatim to this year’s midseason finale), nothing that has happen thus far in season four would ever have needed to happen. It’s all a little redundant now, isn’t it? In any case, this is the best that the show has ever been, and I can’t wait for its return in February (it’s still not as good as the game though).

5. American Horror Story: Coven – I’ve thoroughly enjoyed each season of American Horror Story (even Asylum when it got weird… though it almost lost me), but Coven is easily the best year yet. The story of Fiona, Cordelia, and the coven of Miss Robichaux’s Academy is gripping, gross, weird, and hilarious, all at the same time. If you haven’t started American Horror Story yet, it’s safe to start with Coven (as the seasons are not connected plot or setting-wise), but you’ll definitely want to go back and watch both Asylum and Murder House as well.

Gus

Favourite Moment: That’s an easy one. This year I had the pleasure of attending my first San Diego Comic Con. There, I incredibly got to meet the real life Jonathan London AND much of the Geekscape crew. Then I had the time of my freaking life.

I can’t wait to do it all again now that I know (a little bit) of what to expect! SDCC 2014 is going to ROCK!

A chubbier me meeting one of my gaming heroes!
A chubbier me meeting one of my gaming heroes!

First up: I’ve kept my review of All That Remains as spoiler-free as possible. That being said, there are some season one spoilers below, so be warned if you haven’t finished it yet. You have finished it though, right? Season one was almost everyone’s favourite title of 2012 (including ours). Get on it!

Damn you, Telltale.

I can’t count how many times I thought or uttered those words throughout the duration of All That Remains. Right from the opening line, hearing our gone (but certainly not never forgotten) friend Lee Everett recap the happenings of the game’s stellar first season, I knew what I was in for: Telltale is on a mission to break all of our hearts yet again (and again… and again). Mission accomplished.

Lee's not there to save you this time.
Lee’s not there to save you this time.

All That Remains kicks off some 16 months after season one’s conclusion. We do get to catch up with some of season one’s other prominent characters, but this time, of course, Clem is front and centre. She’s a little older, a little taller, and a lot wiser than she was when we last left her, and this time around, instead of acting as her guardian, she doesn’t have one, and it’s up to you to directly control the character and make every tough decision for her.

And what tough decisions they are. Within a few moments of the game’s opening my jaw was on the floor. Then it happened again, and again, then I cried… you get the picture. It’s tough to describe without ruining it (and The Walking Dead is absolutely a game that you shouldn’t have ruined for you), but All That Remains, largely setup as it is, left me an absolute wreck. Just when you think that Telltale couldn’t have any more surprises in store, just when there couldn’t possibly be a harder choice, just when you think they couldn’t possibly rip your heart out again, just when you think they wouldn’t go there, they go there.

Damn you, Telltale.

As always, the game is relentlessly forcing you into situations that you don’t want to be in, and pushing you into impossible decisions that you don’t want to make. This time though, everything feels different. Playing as a child, making these choices from a kid’s point of view, changes everything. You have options that would have never been options with Lee, as his hardened, bleak perspective on the world is one that Clementine hasn’t fully realized yet. It almost feels as though Clementine has hope, which is something that’s arguably even more heartbreaking than any decision we’ve had to make so far, and especially so knowing how the lives of those connected to her tend to turn out. All That Remains is just the beginning, and I have a feeling that we haven’t seen anything yet. Things are only going to get harder, decisions are only going to get worse, and if Clementine dies in the end, I’m going to freaking explode.

Ah, Omid. It's great to see a familiar face, isn't it?
Ah, Omid. It’s great to see a familiar face, isn’t it?

Technically, everything seems vastly improved from last year’s offering. I still experienced that classic Telltale slowdown (again playing on PS3, so I can’t vouch for other platforms), and while annoying, it seemed (mostly) limited to the opening few seconds after every loading screen, a major improvement from season one’s consistent stutter. Character models look much better than last year (and I thought that they looked great before), but the biggest graphical improvements are definitely the game’s environments and backgrounds. Last year’s trees, backdrops, and buildings seemed oddly low resolution at times, with little to no animation even in areas that you would expect to see it. This time around, trees sway in the wind, grass moves when you walk over it, and almost every texture looks substantially higher resolution than those that came before.

All That Remains also boasts a much improved camera system. You still don’t have any control over it (which I’m all for in a title like this), but this year’s version feels much more cinematic. Rather than a largely still shot, with an occasional pan and lots of cuts, the camera in All That Remains seems much more inclined to follow you, tracking smoothly as you move between trees, along porches, or wherever else the game may take you.

Action sequences have taken a note from The Wolf Among Us (which we loved the first episode of) here, and bring a few welcome changes to the table: buttons are larger and easier to see, a very clear radius system lets us know just how close or far away we can be and still activate something, and the action in general seems streamlined, more cinematic, and much more entertaining to be a part of. The developer has also broken up the action with a few simple (essentially fetch quests), but very welcome puzzles that give you just a few moments to catch your breath. Also, the much appreciated faster-walk button from The Wolf Among Us has been included (thank you). There were some painfully slow walking moments in season one, so I’m very happy to see that those moments will not make the jump to season two.

Graphics and animations have both vastly improved from the game's first season.
Graphics and animations have both vastly improved from the game’s first season.

Looking back on the evolution of The Walking Dead, it’s easy to see just how much Telltale has grown since the very first episode (A New Day) all the way back in April of 2012. I doubt that the developer could have known the absolute acclaim and dozens (upon dozens) of awards that were in store for them when that first episode went live last year, but it’s clear by the titles now in the works (both Borderlands AND Game of Thrones) just how infatuated the world has become with this little(ish) studio that could. Essentially all of the criticisms (aside from the few technical stutters) that we had with last year’s iterations have been solved and improved upon, and I’m both insatiably excited and incredibly terrified to see what the next episode, A House Divided brings to the table.

We said it last year, and we’re saying it again. Telltale’s The Walking Dead is the definitive version of the franchiseAs much as we love the Image comic series, and as great as the AMC series can be (especially this year), the video game is better. Even if you’re not a gamer, if you’re a fan of narrative entertainment, you owe it to yourself to check this out.

The Walking Dead: Season Two, Episode One – All That Remains scores a tear-jerking 4.5/5.

Way back in 2011, at ZombCon, me and Jonathan ran into Nat Jones. The creator of the amazing Zombie Comic ’68. His elevator pitch for his book hooked me on the spot. “The Night of The Living Dead came out in 1968. Where was the worst place on the planet during 1968? Vietnam of course!” The art style from this series is hyper detailed and extremely graphic. It really brought me in. So when Hallowed Ground came across my digital desk I jumped at the chance to read it.

Hallowed Ground is the turning point for the series. It takes the narrative home from Vietnam and back to the States. If you haven’t read the entire back issues, like I have, then this is a great jumping on point for anyone.

The opening scene of the book really shook me. We see a desolate church with gibbed zombies laying all over the yard. We see the sign of the church has been changed. Be it in a very macabre manner.

68 Hallowed Ground Church of Risen

The next panel made me express an audible “DAYUM!”. The first six pages owe their amazing layout to the late Josh Medor, who before his passing in 2012, started this book. His scenes are very dramatic and have focus emphasized in all the right places. We meet our characters inside the church. All are polar opposites of eachother. Our protagonist Apollyon, is fresh off the boat from Nam. The church priest Hiram and his wife. The chubby Sheriff and a small orphaned child. The narrative was full of exposition and mostly back story for Apollyon.

Here is my biggest gripe for the book. There isn’t actually a whole hell of a lot going on. Pages and pages of narrative, then 1.5 pages of extreme violence. The amazing art and gory bits really make up for it though. I have to give it some leniency: It is a series starting point for the new issues next year, and doesn’t lend itself for a whole lot of action. They’re trying to setup the new series. It is actually a double issue, the story of the church is told from two point of views ( I’ll get to the 2nd one shortly). It is a dieing mans last work, and I feel if Josh was able to finish the whole book it may have been a tad bit more cohesive.

After a quick fast climax in the story, we are jarred out of the inside of the church and into the Bell Tower. This was when I realized this was actually a two parter. Part 1 ended with “a blast” and part 2 links up with the first narrative at that point and moves on.

Up in the Bell Tower we meet another Vet. Angel, who is a sniper, is picking off zombies in the yard all the while protecting a hurt woman named Sarah. Again my main gripe returns, way to much narrative setting up the characters motivations and past with little to nothing actually happening. It doesn’t last long as the action ramps up quickly in the Bell Tower, all climaxing in about 1.5 pages, but like the first part. What I particularly enjoyed during this scene was a reanimated torso climbing the drain pipe of the church. These Zombies aren’t your normal dumb Walking Dead, they feel like they have a bit more brains and will stop at nothing to get their feed on.

All I was very pleased with this one shot. It really set the tone for the new issues coming out in 2014. My score fluctuated a half point the entire time I read this book. Apollyon’s very dark origin story felt drawn and tedious, but it all paid off in the end. I am going to have to err on the lower score though, its a great book and it looks amazing, but it is just missing something.

Final Score: 3.5/5 Rotting Corpses.

Image Comics new release Alex + Ada pulled me in right from the first image: a twenty-something man and woman facing each other as if on the alter, except the woman has some sort of shipping wrapping instead of a veil. My curiosity got the better of me, so I checked it out and thoroughly enjoyed the premiere issue.

Jonathan Luna and Sarah Vaughn put together an ordinary storyline, but in an extraordinary setting. The main character, Alex, is suffering from a breakup that happened seven months ago, and is pushing his way through work and life. Sure, we’ve all seen this (and been through this) already, right? The difference is all in the setting.

alexada01_p2

It’s the future, robots are everywhere, and besides the random robot attacks a few months back in California caused by a free will program, they are friendly. The world is a bit too similar to the one in the film iRobot, honestly. People have robots as helpers, holographic phones, and Alex even has a new psychic implant in his head that allows him to control all of his appliances, including his front door and car, via thought. He is also able to communicate with others who have the implant using a psychic phone line.

Alex is lonely, and on his birthday, after an awkward call with his grandmother, who just got herself a robot and is using for…reasons you wouldn’t want to hear from a grandma, he finds himself at a surprise party. He ducks out early and finds that his grandmother has sent him a surprise gift…I’m sure you can guess what it is.

alexada01_p5

What I liked about the book was the combination of a generic storyline with a setting that really made something familiar a bit more alien. The futuristic inventions, the psychic chip he used, and some of the other setting-related ideas kept me wanting more. I also liked the artwork. It was simple, well-drawn and the projected television screens especially were cool.

What I didn’t like was that the setting was a bit too similar to iRobot. While this storyline seems to be heading towards Alex falling in love with a robot, the world so far is way too close to the Will Smith film.

Overall, I would rate it 4/5 and plan to continue reading Alex + Ada. The first issue hits store shelves on Wednesday, November 6th!

Briefly: The Walking Dead premiered last week to a whopping 16 million viewers, and AMC today took us behind-the-scenes of season four with a new featurette.

The video features interviews with plenty of the series’ cast and crew, who assure us that they still have some tricks up their sleeve, and that this season is leading up to something bigI guess that all we can do is hope that it doesn’t end like last year, right?

Take a look at the featurette below, and let us know what you think! Did you enjoy Sunday’s season premiere?

For many people, including myself, the haunting yet whimsical lyrics sung by GlaDOS at the end of the critically acclaimed 2007 computer game Portal were our introduction into the mind of Jonathan Coulton and the unique universe he has constructed within his songs.

Code Monkey Save World is based around the character from another popular Coulton song, ‘Code Monkey,’ which centers on a monkey who works as a computer programmer and details an accurate portrayal (Coulton worked as a computer programmer in the past) of working in a corporate environment. That’s where the similarities to the song end, and the comic takes Code Monkey off on an adventure to save the secretary from his office (who he secretly loves), and save the world in the process with help from Skullcrusher, a supervillain from another Coulton track who also pines for the affections of a girl.

codework

The writing, by Greg Pak (Batman/Superman), does a great job of sprinkling in many other Coulton references (the half monkey/half pony created by Skullcrusher, for instance) while helping to move the story forward, and keeps it interesting while expanding on popular characters, including the secretary (now known as Matilde) and Laura the Robo Queen (from the song ‘The Future Soon’). Pak is provided a deep well of source material from Coulton whose lyrics are burned into the pages with each frame.

skullcrusher

The artwork (drawn by Runaways Takeshi Miyazawa) is very well done, and carries a good flow with the writing so as not to appear disjointed or confusing on the eyes. The Coulton universe comes alive in front of you, and it’s interesting to see how Pak, Miyazawa, and their team interpreted what these characters should look like. Facial expression is important to convey how a character is feeling, and is something which the artist completely captures. The colors match the mood and themes of the various scenes while making sure to keep the action alive and popping.

The idea for the comic began on twitter when Pak was encouraged by Coulton to create the project after joking that the supervillain characters from Coulton’s songs would make for an interesting team. Together, they formed a Kickstarter for the project and after receiving over $300,000 from backers (after asking for only $39,000, making it 872% successful) work went underway. The comic will be 96 pages and Coulton will also accompany the book with an acoustic soundtrack of his songs that inspired the series.

There are so many unique songs Coulton has cooked up that could be used in this project. His ability to capture the best ideas from various pop culture examples combined with his own life experiences and creative touch means that this series can be the visual equivalent of listening to his music, but with the added bonus of his musical world becoming intertwined together to create a lasting story.

The premiere issue of Code Monkey Save World scores a clear 9 out of 10, and I can’t wait to see what Pak has in store for the code crunching monkey. The issue hits Comixology on Wednesday, October 15th, and a hard-copy trade paperback will be available once all four issues have been released!

Be sure to let us know what you think of the book once you pick it up!

Briefly: Remember last year when The Walking Dead‘s third season premiere drew in a record number of viewers?

Last night’s premiere has blown that record out of the water. Seriously. Season three premiered to 10.9 million viewers, while season four’s opener drew in a whopping 16.1 million people.

AMC states that “The Walking Dead returned last night for its fourth season, delivering the highest ratings of any episode in series history. The season four premiere was watched by 16.1 million total viewers and 10.4 million adults aged 18-49. Last night’s ratings confirm The Walking Dead continues to be the #1 show on all of television among the coveted 18-49 demographic. 2013/14 season to date, last night’s premiere ranks as the #1 telecast in adults 18-49, outperforming all programs including primetime NFL football. With time-shifted playback, last night’s premiere should exceed 20 million viewers.”

AMC President Charlie Collier continues, “Sincere thanks to the fans, who have welcomed The Walking Dead back for its fourth season with the highest-rated episode in the show’s history. We could not be more proud of this show and everyone on both sides of the camera who work so hard to give life to this story of character, leadership and survival. It starts with series creator, writer and executive producer Robert Kirkman, show runner and executive producer Scott Gimple and the director of last night’s episode (and the man behind the make-up) executive producer Greg Nicotero, their fellow executive producers and an extraordinary cast and crew who are giving their all every day. So clearly, thanks to them, the dead have never been more alive.”

Those are some pretty insane numbers, huh? Did you watch last night’s episode? I have no idea when I’ll find the time to check it out, but be sure to let us know your thoughts!

Briefly: Season four of The Walking Dead premieres tomorrow, and AMC today revealed two new additions to the already expansive cast.

Rosita was cast back in September, leaving us all to wonder if we’d be seeing Eugene and Abraham too. Castings for the two characters were revealed today, so it looks as thought the trio is complete!

Abraham will be played by Southland’s Michael Cudlitz, who tweeted the following photo of himself on set:

Josh McDermitt will portray Dr. Eugene Porter, who basically lied about knowing the cause of the pandemic, convincing Abraham to take him to Washington, meeting up with Rick and the others on the way. Here’s a photo of Josh:

I’m looking forward to seeing the trio introduced. Their arcs have always been interesting in the comic series, and Abraham was a wonderfully developed character before he met his untimely demise.

Are you excited for the premiere tomorrow? I’ll be busy celebrating Canadian Thanksgiving, but I’m sure it’ll be a great watch once I’m done!

Briefly: There’s just 12 more days until the highly anticipated season premiere of The Walking Dead, and AMC has debuted two new teasers for the show.

The videos feature some new footage from the season, and reminds us that basically everything we’ve seen from season four has looked awesome. Scott Gimple has already done some phenomenal work on the series (remember last year’s Clear?), and I firmly believe he’s going to be a fantastic showrunner.

Briefly: The ever growing group of survivors in AMC’s The Walking Dead is about to add one more.

The network announced today that Twilight star Christian Serratos will join the series as Rosita Espinosa. Rosita has been a prominent character in the Image comic series for a number of years now, making her first appearance in issue 53 along with Abraham Ford and Dr. Eugene Porter.

It’s not know whether or not her companions will also be added to the series, but at this point a casting announcement has not been made. Christian will guest star in multiple episodes this year, and has been optioned to become a series regular for the inevitable fifth season of The Walking Dead.

With less than a month to go until The Walking Dead premieres, are you looking forward to the Scott Gimple led fourth season? Are you happy with the casting of Rosita, or is there another actress you’d rather have seen in the role? Sound out below!
