Nintendo recently announced a plethora of big news, including details regarding the new My Nintendo account system, as well as their first mobile app Miitomo.  Along with all the breaking news, the company also announced that they will be launching five smart device application by the end of March 2017 (including Miitomo).  This is an absolutely huge move by Nintendo, and it’s always fun to speculate what may be coming next!  So let’s go down the rabbit hole and take a brief look at their history with smart devices, and I’ll try at some guesses as to what we may see next!

I first heard of Nintendo creating an app for smart devices during a Nintendo Direct presentation detailing Wii U functionality in 2012.  During a segment, Iwata goes into details for “Miiverse”, and a part of those details stated, “The social elements of Miiverse are also designed for Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, and future Nintendo devices.”  There was lots of speculation that this was going to be a smartphone app, and after some time, it was launched.  However, contrary to what many had thought, Nintendo had chosen to make it exclusively a web app instead.

miiversegeekscape

Nintendo continued the web-based application route, with recently releasing another app for Super Mario Maker.  Titled “Super Mario Maker Bookmark“, this app allows you to queue a list of courses you would like to play when you’re on the go, so when you return to your Wii U at home, all of the search-work has already been completed.  It also allows you to add identifier tags to describe your levels, such as “Gimmick,” “Puzzle,” etc.

mariomakerphone

When talking about brand new Nintendo gimmicks, there’s no name more popular than “Pokemon!”  There are many times where Pokemon seems to be used as an experimental Intellectual Property for new ideas.  An older example would be the N64 game “Hey You! Pikachu!” where the player can use a microphone to be able to command a virtual Pikachu on screen, and a newer example would be Nintendo’s first Amiibo, which were Pokemon NFC figurines for the Wii U eShop title, “Pokemon Rumble U!”  I feel like Pokémon is always chosen because The Pokemon Company has a lot of wiggle room to work with the IP independently of Nintendo, but that’s still only conjecture on my part.

Many have heard of the Pokemon GO application being released this year, but it may be interesting to note that this isn’t the first Pokemon-based application to hit mobile devices.  True to their pattern, Pokemon was again used in an experimental way.  The very first Pokemon app (that I recall) making it to mobile devices was a virtual encyclopedia (otherwise known as a Pokedex) titled “Pokedex”.  Originally, it only existed as an app on the Nintendo 3DS, but then became available through your smartphone or tablet!  When this first came out, I was totally flabbergasted–I never imagined that The Pokemon Company was allowed to release any software that wasn’t on a Nintendo handheld!  Several other apps were launched as well–an app for viewing “Pokemon TV”, a “Camp Pokemon” game, and a mobile port of the 3DS title “Pokemon Shuffle.”

pokedex_app1

This details Nintendo’s short history of utilizing smart devices, however, there is one more question we must ask ourselves before we start speculating:  “Why mobile?”  If Nintendo has been adamant about anything, it’s had always been about creating software that can take full advantage of the hardware that it’s utilizing.  A similar question to ask would be “Why is Miiverse and Super Mario Maker Bookmark simply web apps, while Pokemon Shuffle and others are installable apps?”  First let’s have a look at the cool features that most smartphones have in common, and try to answer these questions:

-Front and rear facing cameras–useful taking photos and AR (Augmented Reality) purposes
-Gyroscope–useful for detecting snappy tilt movements
-Local Hard Drive–useful for holding large amounts of information
-Microphone–useful for voice commands

It wouldn’t have made sense to have had Miiverse or Super Mario Maker Bookmark as local apps simply because large amounts of storage would be required to view all of the data stored on their website, especially since they’re being updated in real time.  Pokedex is a limited encyclopedia so even though it is very large, it still has a maximum limit–totally suitable for a mobile app.  Pokemon Shuffle is a game in and of itself, so it wouldn’t make sense as a web app because you wouldn’t be able to play it while offline.  However, web apps do have an advantage–web apps can usually be accessed not only by smartphones, but by PCs and others as well.  Therefore, Miiverse and Super Mario Maker Bookmark were available to many devices, and not strictly limited to smartphones.

Using all of the above as a backbone, here is a (somewhat) organized list on my thoughts of we will see with upcoming Nintendo apps!

-Miitomo is included in the count, so that technically makes FOUR more apps that Nintendo will build.  Miitomo is also stated as their “first app for mobile devices,” so they’re NOT including Pokemon apps in the count.

-True to the point above, Pokemon GO will not be one of the apps being counted.  It will probably be launched under The Pokemon Company’s name and not Nintendo’s.

-While a Miiverse app seems unlikely, as it really wouldn’t make sense, a “Nintendo Hub” app of sorts that can keep a local copy of all of your friends’ posts, and perhaps even a local database of your friends’ Super Mario Maker levels could be useful.  It would also be cool to be able to draw Miiverse posts with your phone’s screen, something that is not currently possible with the web app.  This “Hub” app will keep together all of the major Nintendo services, extensions, and game offerings, perhaps similar to the Final Fantasy Portal app by Square Enix.

-Miitomo isn’t a game so much as it is a “social interacting tool” with game elements.  I do not expect Nintendo to release full dedicated games–at most, possibly ports of games, such as Pokemon Shuffle.  Out of the four games, I’m guessing at least one will be a port.

-A dedicated companion to Super Mario Maker.  A long time ago, Nintendo created a game called “Warioware D.I.Y.” which allowed players to create Warioware microgames and share with others.  However, this game had a unique feature–players could download an app specific to the Wii just to play the created games, although owners of the app couldn’t create games themselves.  What if you could simply play Super Mario Maker levels on your smartphone–download a bunch and play them on the go, even if you couldn’t make any?  It would be an interesting way for them to advertise Super Mario Maker.

-If Nintendo can master how to work emulation for smartphones, then it’s may be possible to link Virtual Console purchase to a smart device–the emulator could be an app all by itself, or it could be embedded in a different app (like a Nintendo Hub!).

-An Augmented Reality app or game that allows the use of Nintendo Characters in real life scenarios–Nintendo has already tested the AR waters with apps on the 3DS such as AR Games and Photos with Mario!

-Amiibo Catalog–I think it would just be common sense for Nintendo to create an app for users to keep track of their amiibo collection.  Although their website has an extensive database, it would be effective to link Amiibo purchases to your account, and be able to link it to all devices.  This catalog can also be used to gauge interest in previously released figures, so Nintendo can do some guesswork as to how many people are interested in a figure that’s no longer available, perhaps even to manage their restocks.  Even beyond smart devices, this could also simply software with “read-only” amiibo functionality–to a point.  I just couldn’t help but feel exhausted after re-scanning all of my amiibo in Mario Maker to get all of the costumes.

Whichever apps come out, I have no doubt that at least one or two of them will be nothing less than revolutionary!  Do you have your own theories as well?  Please let us know in the comments!

Briefly: Of course, you already knew the plot of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess…

In any case, Nintendo has just debuted a new trailer, which details the game’s epic plot, while showing off just how slick the title looks in its new HD rendition.

As much flak as Twilight Princess received when it first released, it remains one of my favourite The Legend of Zelda titles to date, and I can’t wait to put the Wii U version on my shelf.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD hits stores on March 4th! Take a look at the new trailer below, read up on the game’s Amiibo functionality here, and be sure to let us know if you’re excited to replay the celebrated title!

Make ready your Amiibo-tapping fingers, because a wave of new details have just been announced! Nintendo is continuing to feed our Amiibo fever by launching new Amiibo, unveiling release dates, and even providing details on how some of the new figures will work!

First, details regarding the Wolf Link amiibo and its functionality in the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD.  The physical version of the game includes both the Wolf Link Amiibo and the game, and it launches March 4 at a suggested retail price of $59.99!  As described in our earlier article, the other currently available Legend of Zelda Amiibo figures will also activate special effects within the game, so it may be worth picking them up at the same time (if you don’t already own them)!  Also, it has been announced that the Wolf Link amiibo will be compatible with the Wii U Legend of Zelda game launching later this year, although we still don’t have details on Amiibo functionality or release date for that title.

lozwolflink

Next up, March 18 will see the launch of several new amiibo from the Animal Crossing series!  Namely, the new Amiibo that will be available are Timmy and Tommy, Kapp’n, and Rover.  Digby, which was previously only available with the Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival bundle, will also be available as a stand-alone amiibo.  All of the currently released physical Animal Crossing amiibo, including the upcoming ones, are based on major NPC characters (such as shop owners) in the Animal Crossing universe, and are largely used in Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival, although several of them can also be used to unlock Super Mario Maker costumes.  Also, later on in March, the third wave of Animal Crossing Amiibo cards will be launched, expanding the catalog of available cards to a whopping 300!  Animal Crossing cards are based on the NPC villagers that can move into a town with the main character, although there are card versions of the major NPCs as well–these cards are used mainly with Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer where you can build a home for each villager and save the created home to the card.  They can also be used in Amiibo Festival, although only with side-games.  For more information on specific functionality with amiibo, please check Nintendo’s amiibo compatibility list.

NOVEL_ura_0613

Another game that has been announced with Amiibo functionality is Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.  Both the Mario and Sonic Amiibo can be used with this game, and these will activate a “daily power” that will boost each individual character.  Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games has a launch date of March 18, at a suggested retail price of $39.99.

3DS_MSROG_case_pkg01

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Pokémon, some of the Pokémon Amiibo will be available again at select retailers.  Prepare for the return of Charizard, Jigglypuff, Greninja, and Lucario!  Note that it doesn’t mention Mewtwo, but based on my own travels, Mewtwo stock doesn’t seem hard to find (yet).  Who knows–maybe amiibo functionality with a new Pokémon game is right around the corner!

And finally, Amiibo compatibility has been confirmed for Star Fox Zero, launching exclusively on Wii U on April 22.  More details on Amiibo functionality with the title will be revealed at a later date.  The Star Fox franchise is one of Nintendo’s strongest, following several anthropomorphic animal space pilots on their various intergalactic missions.  After our recent expeditions on the planet Mira with Xenoblade Chronicles, and the resurgence of Star Wars with Episode VII, we are looking forward to jumping back into the deep reaches of space with Fox and his crew, using the Wii U’s GamePad as our cockpit!

How do you feel about this new wave of Amiibo news?  Has it forced your Amiibo fever to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit?  Please let us know in the comments!

Briefly: I nearly forgot that we’re just two months away from replaying this fantastic title.

Nintendo has just debuted a new trailer showing off the fairly extensive Amiibo functionality supported by the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD.

The physical version of the game, of course, comes packaged with the Wolf Link and Midna figure, which will open up the ‘Cave of Shadow’ challenge area in the game, which sounds like a fun distraction if you’re simply looking to tear up some baddies.

Other, Legend of Zelda Amiibo offer up different functionality as well. Link and Toon Link will refill your arrows, Zelda and Sheik figures will restore your hearts, and the Ganondorf figure, naturally, will make your experience tougher by making Link take more damage when hit.

Sounds fun, doesn’t it? Are you looking forward to the Twilight Princess HD release? The title will release on March 4th!

Shovel Knight fans, the wait is over.

Yacht Club games has announced that the long-awaited Shovel Knight amiibo figure will be available in Europe on December 11, while here in North America, fans will have to wait another month, as the figure won’t arrive on store shelves until January 8, 2016.

But that’s not all.

In addition to the December 11 and January 8 launch dates, Wii U owners in both regions get an extra bonus as the Shovel Knight Amiibo unlocks a Co-Op mode for the Wii U version of Shovel Knight, as well as new challenges, and a ‘custom knight’ feature (Co-Op with the Shovel Knight amiibo ala Yoshi’s Wooly World?).

Briefly: Back in September, Nintendo fans everywhere were disappointed to learn that the company’s upcoming Star Fox Zero would not be making its 2015 release window. In the delay announcement, an apologetic Miyamoto noted that “the game will not be delayed for a very long time – we’re aiming to launch the game in Q1 2016.”

As revealed at yesterday’s Nintendo Direct presentation, it looks like that game won’t quite make that Q1 release, but will instead hit the Wii U on April 22nd, 2016.

So, fans, we’ve got just five more months of waiting. At least we’ll have that Falco Amiibo to pick up on November 20th, right?

Are you looking forward to Star Fox Zero? Since you won’t be playing it this holiday season, what will draw your gaming attention instead? Sound out below!

This Friday, the next major batch of Amiibo, Nintendo’s wildly popular line of toys to life figurines, will make their debut alongside Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival. Serving as the series’ first Amiibo representation outside of the Smash Bros. Villager, our favorite animal friends like Isabelle, K.K. Slider and the slumlord, Tom Nook, will finally be represented in figure form. If those aren’t enough for you, Mega Yarn Yoshi will release a mere two days later, exclusively at Toys R Us. Having special functionality in Yoshi’s Wooly World and sizing up as the largest Amiibo to date, (as well as coming with the highest price tag, with an MSRP of $39.99,) many a gamer will have a new friend to keep them warm during these long, winter nights.

Luckily, we were able to get an in person preview of some of these figures in advance. While we wait patiently for the day when these new toys can take up more of our shelf space, here are a few shots to hold you over until the weekend rolls around.

Amiibo Animal Crossing

Nook is thinking of ways to rip us off as we speak.

Amiibo Isabelle

Best girl.

Amiibo Mega Yarn YoshiJust the right cuddle size.

Between the sloped bases of the Animal Crossing set and the care that Yarn Yoshi seems like it received, it’s possible that these might become my favorite Amiibo yet! Which ones are you planning on picking up this weekend? Share your Amiibo plans with us in the comments below. And remember, this is a No Shades Zone!

For a genre that’s meant to bring family and friends together for some lighthearted fun, party games have this terrible habit of making people hate each other. Never just letting the roll of the dice decide the game, it’s become commonplace for the genre to rely on mini games, item collecting, and the ability to sabotage other players. While entertaining, it’s wise not to play with people that you actually want to stay friends with when the day is over.

Which is why after playing Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival, I was pleasantly surprised to find that none of that tomfoolery was present when it came to our animal friends. Supporting up to four players with each Amiibo serving as a game piece, (much like Mario Party 10‘s Amiibo Party mode, complete with the annoying need to tap your character with each dice roll,) the citizens of the village aren’t out to harm their friends, but instead, spread happiness throughout the town. Each section on the board represents an activity, whether it’s shopping, styling your hair or participating in a competition. After an adorable scene plays out describing the event, it will award either Happy Points or Bells, with the latter being used to cash in for more of the former. The player with the most happy points at the end wins, spreading some much needed joy to the bloodthirsty world of virtual board games. That’s not to say that there aren’t ways to end up losing points or for other players to gain an advantage, but don’t expect three on one gang beatings either.

Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival Screen 2Each space describes an activity in town, like a trip to the salon!

In addition to this mostly passive method of play, the maps themselves are inspired by Animal Crossing‘s calendar system. With each turn taking up one day, the scenery and weather will change with each passing day. Though the amount of time a game takes can be customized, the standard matches will run through one full month, complete with special events for any holidays that happen to fall in that time frame. It manages to capture the spirit of why the series is so popular within a completely different genre.

With all of that said, that’s not to say that the mini games aren’t there. More specifically, Amiibo Festival has a dedicated mini game mode, pushing the theme of friendship even further by forcing the animals to work together in what can only be described as Nintendo’s version of Lost. Trapped on an island, the animal team has a certain amount of turns to gather materials to build a raft for their escape while quelling their hunger at the same time. Using materials to build tools like fishing rods for food, shovels for digging up hidden Pitfalls that would cost you your turn otherwise, or saving them for your great escape, this side game asks the animals to pool together their resources to meet a common goal. The catch? This mode can only be played with those Amiibo cards you might have seen pop up in stores for minutes at a time. While the game comes packaged with a few, it’s not enough to play the full island game, so you’re going to have to drop a few extra Bells if you want the complete experience. This goes double for the main mode, which will obviously need two more figures outside of the bundled Isabelle and Digsby if you want to experience four player games.

Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival Screen 1Mabel would be getting shoved off the podium if this was Mario Party.

With only a week away before the festival hits our doorstep, we can’t wait to put some time into the full game. It’s unique take on the party genre that Nintendo revolutionized so many years ago has the potential to be a huge hit with families or the type of gamers who want a more passive experience. My only concern so far is whether or not the less competitive nature of Amiibo Festival will take away from some of its long term appeal. Still, it’s impossible to deny that the game is shaping up to be a crowd pleaser for fans of the series, and we’ll make sure to deliver our full impressions once Animal Crossing returns to consoles on November 13th.

Briefly: Wow.

Nintendo revealed some pretty decent earnings at today’s investor’s meeting, and one of the biggest surprises (well, not really) was the incredible amount of Amiibo figures that the company has sold to date.

Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima announced during the meeting that Amiibo sales have surpassed 21 million units worldwide.

21. Million. Units. Whoah. Keep in mind that the Amiibo line as a whole launched just 11 months ago.

It was revealed back in May that the company had sold over 10.5 million figures, so clearly Nintendo’s intense focus on fixing the constant supply chain issues that Amiibo suffered for many months after launch has worked absolute wonders on sales numbers.

It’s insanely impressive.

How many Amiibo figures do you own? Somehow, I ended up with every single figure released thus far less the just-launched Yarn Yoshi’s. And I can’t wait to buy more.

It’s hard to believe that the Super Mario Bros. Series has been platforming into our living rooms for thirty years.

Released on September 13th 1985, Super Mario Bros. has gone to become one of the most popular video games to date. It even went on to sell over 40 million copies and spawn endless spin-offs and sequels that continue to this very day. Even Mario himself has become one of the most recognizable icons in history. Flash forward 30 years, and fans are finally getting one of their biggest wishes granted with Super Mario Maker.Mario Maker Title Screen

Super Mario Maker is Nintendo’s love letter to the Mario series and fans alike, allowing anyone to make their own 2D Mario levels from scratch. What really makes this game special is that not only can you make your own levels from the original Mario, but you can also choose art styles from its most popular iterations. These include classics such as Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and even New Super Mario Bros. U. There’s also a wealth of locations to choose between including above ground, underground, underwater, ghost house, air ship, and bowser’s castle.

Today’s Fuel Economy -By Josh

The tool layout is very simple to pick up and use. All you do is tap on an item you want to use and you can summon that item at will. Most items are usable in all art styles excluding a couple of items. These include the goomba shoe in Mario 1 and Mario 3, turning into Yoshi eggs in Mario World and Mario U, and the Mystery Mushroom (more on that in a second) turning into each art styles specific flying item. Mario 3 has the Raccoon Leaf, Mario World has the Cape, and Mario U has the Propeller Hat.

Skull Ride Glide -By Brian
Skull Ride Glide -By Brian

One of the most fun additions to Super Mario Maker has to be the inclusion of the Mystery Mushroom. By tapping a corresponding Amiibo, or completing a run in 100 Mario Challenge (A mode where you adventure through randomly generated user levels) you can unlock a special character outfit for Mario to use in the original Super Mario Bros. theme. Want to go through a level as Donkey Kong, Samus, Kirby, or even Megaman? Well now you can! Just playing 100 Mario Challenge to see what character you’ll unlock next will have you occupied for a long time to come considering that there’s about 100 different costumes.Mario Maker review 4

Now to the part everyone’s been waiting for: the user generated content. Content is separated by 100 Mario Challenge, Courses, and Makers. Courses can be sorted by featured, top rated, and up & coming. They can also be searched by difficulty, but not name, location or time period even though the options are there. This is one of the biggest flaws in the game since if you want to play a specific level from someone, you have to be either following them, or enter a 16 digit code. I’m really hoping for an update that can add a better search engine because as it is right now, it’s kind of useless.

Super Mario Maker Levels

Even aside from the search engine problems I still have a couple of minor complaints with the title. For starters, Even though there’s a nice amount of objects and enemies to use, there are still some really iconic items missing from the game. These include not being able to make slopes, as well as there being no Desert or Forest levels as well as the exclusion of popular enemies such as the Angry Sun and the Charging Chucks. There’s also a problem with content creation item unlocks.

The game starts you off with only one row of objects and enemies, and from there you have to gradually create for 5 minutes for 9 days in a row, or spend time nonstop creating every 15 minutes. While I understand this is done to prevent younger children from getting too overwhelmed with the pallet, it would have been nice to at least have an option to start with everything.  This option could have allowed veterans to jump straight into the more advanced techniques.

Mario Maker review 5

Overall, Super Mario Maker is one of the Wii U’s best offerings right beside Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Super Smash Bros, Bayonetta 2 and more! Creating levels is very easy and the tools are very accessible to all ages. The complaints I have about it aren’t enough to ruin the experience and I can see myself already planning more stages to create and play. Even if you aren’t a creator, there are still a boat load of original and creative levels that’ll keep you playing for months and even years to come (perhaps I’ll highlight  some of my favorites sometime.)

Rating: 4/5, BUY IT!!

Briefly: Say it ain’t so.

Nintendo’s Wii U is having an excellent year so far, but it was set to have a phenomenal holiday season with the release of the next The Legend of Zelda title as well as Star Fox Zero.

Back in March Nintendo revealed that The Legend of Zelda would not be released this year. Tonight, Miyamoto confirmed that Star Fox Zero won’t either. Here’s his statement:

I made a big decision last week.

We have been developing Star Fox Zero for Wii U with the aim of releasing it this year. Although we felt that the development had been progressing well, we now believe that we will need a little more time to work on areas such as the unprecedented discovery that we want players to experience in the game by using two screens, and further polishing the level designs and perfecting the tone of the cut scenes. While we have already reached the stage where it would be technically possible to release the title in time for the year-end holiday season, we want to polish the game a bit more so that players will be able to more smoothly grasp the new style of play that we are proposing.

To the people looking forward to the launch of the game this holiday season, I am very sorry.

Star Fox Zero is going to bring new game play and experiences that take it far beyond the framework established by Star Fox 64. All the members of the development team are doing our best so that the final product will not betray your expectations. And the game will not be delayed for a very long time – we’re aiming to launch the game in Q1 2016. Please stay tuned for further announcements.

This generation has been notorious for AAA titles being delayed, and Nintendo is no different.

What are you looking forward to playing this holiday season?

Briefly: Finally, finally, finally, it’s nearly new Amiibo day.

Which is a fantastic, and extremely stressful day.

Adding to all of the stress, aside from the always sparse stock, are the retailer exclusive characters. Unless you’re really lucky, you pretty much have to decide which exclusive character you like best, because it’s seriously unlikely you’ll have a chance to grab them all.

The latest in the long line of retailer exclusive figures is Bowser Jr., who will only be found at Toys R Us stores next Friday.

The announcement came from the official Toys R Us twitter page, so we can all sigh at them in unison.

September 11th will also bring the 30th Anniversary Mario Classic Color, Zero Suit Samus, Ganondorf, Olimar, and Dr. Mario (exclusive to Target) figures.

Which will you be trying to grab? All of them? Yeah, me too.

shovel amiibo

Oh boy, Nintendo fans are in for quite a treat come this holiday season.

Earlier this morning, retail chain GAME prematurely announced the existence of an official Shovel Knight amiibo. GAME has since pulled the tweet, but this being the internet, it has easily found its way back online.

The Figurine will be released on November 27th and work with both the 3DS and Wii U versions of Shovel Knight. It also says that future games by Yacht Club Games will also use the recently announced amiibo, but nothing was specified on what content it’ll add.

Are you excited for this amiibo?

Longtime Geekscape listener and writer Karson Braaten is in town from Saskatchewan and he’s brought his fellow Canadian friend Matt Peters along with him! Crazy, after almost 10 years of correspondence, Karson and I finally meet in person… so of course we do it on a Geekscape episode! We get down to business quick by talking about the controversy of ‘Straight Outta Compton’ skipping over the not so nice parts of NWA’s history and wincing at the onslaught of releases that Nintendo has coming our way… including Mega Yarn Yoshi! And as Nintendo changes its view of Hollywood using their characters, we ask what you’d love to see made! Plus! ‘Fear The Walking Dead’ premiered huge and Luke Cage may have found his match! Mockingbird might be getting her own ‘SHIELD’ spin-off and ‘Gambit’ might have a leading lady! Oh yeah, and ‘Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp’ is exactly what fans wanted and more!

Super Mario Maker is a Nintendo fan’s dream come true. Allowing players to create their own custom courses in any way they see fit, the game is perfect for those who have ever dreamed of being a game designer. One would think that would be enough, right? Well, sit tight because Nintendo is not limiting the customization to course building–as this new trailer showcases.

Over 50 amiibo figures will be compatible with Super Mario Maker–making it possible to run through a horde of Cheep Cheeps as Wii Fit Trainer, swim through a bevy of Bloopers as Kirby, and even face off in an epic showdown with Bowser as, well, Bowser!

Which amiibo will you be using to run through your custom Mario courses? Share your thoughts in the comments section below and we will discuss your responses on the next Geekscape Games Podcast!

Briefly: The most exciting piece of news that Nintendo revealed this morning?

Nope. Not Fatal Frame, though I’m beyond excited to know when I’ll finally be able to get my hands on that too.

It’s the damned expensive, damned incredible Mega Yarn Yoshi Amiibo.

Because if buying a blue, pink, and green Yarn Yoshi weren’t already going to put a big enough dent in your wallet, on October 16th you’ll also be able to spend a new retail game worth of cash of the Mega version. It’ll cost a cool $39.99 in the USA, while Canadians like myself will be forking out $59.99.

What’s it do? Well, aside from looking awesome, when tapped to the GamePad controller in Yoshi’s Woolly World, Mega Yarn Yoshi activates “Double Yoshi,” a second Yoshi to use at any point in the middle of a stage, as well as the ability to save their favourite Yoshi pattern to the amiibo.

It’s a cool ability, and it’s also the exact same thing that the standard Yarn Yoshi will do in the game.

In any case, I’ll take two! How about you?

Super Mario Maker doesn’t release until the 11th of September, but that won’t stop people from showing new footage of it. Thanks to Midwest Professor we can now take an extensive look at a small handful of amiibo costumes that will be appearing in the game. These can be be obtained by either scanning in a compatible amiibo or by beating the 100 Man Mario Challenge mode. It should also be noted that the game will support over 50 amiibo at launch!!! Are you excited for the release of Super Mario Maker? Which amiibo costume will you use first?

Just as you thought you could take a break from the hunt, Nintendo pulls you back in!

In a recent press release, Nintendo announced that a variety of new Amiibo figures will launch on September 11th to coincide with the release of Super Mario Maker. Including the retro colored 8-Bit Mario, the Smash Bros line of figures, including Dr. Mario, Zero Suit Samus, and Olimar to name a few, pre order plans will be set by the individual retailers at a later date.
The full list of announced figures is as follows:
  • 30th Anniversary Mario Classic Color
  • Zero Suit Samus
  • Ganondorf
  • Olimar
  • Bowser Jr.
  • Dr. Mario

In addition, the much rumored Retro 3-Pack was confirmed for September 25th, bundling R.O.B., Duck Hunt and Mr. Game and Watch in one package. The Mii Fighter pack on the other hand, was officially pushed to November from its original September launch window, but was also confirmed as a three character bundle. As for the modern colored 8-Bit Mario, Mewtwo, the Chibi Robo set, and the Yoshi Yarn plushies, details will be released on a future date.

The best news of all? While it wasn’t explicitly stated, it seems like none of the figures mentioned above are store exclusives! That means we can choose where we decide to throw away a good evening camping out for these guys! Which ones are you going to pick up in lieu of valuable time with friends and family? Sound off below!

If you’re still in the Amiibo hunt, you might want to set your alarms for Friday afternoon!

Amazon announced that Palutena would go on sale on Friday, July 24th, at 2 PM PST. One click ordering will be disabled, so everyone who signs in will have an equal chance of obtaining it. Oh, and if you wanted to hoard a ton of characters for yourself, (or sell them to avoid real work,) then sorry. It will be one per customer this time around. Considering how big Amazon is, I’m hoping that they will have plenty in stock to appease all of the gamers who will be viciously assaulting their keyboards trying to buy the Goddess of Light, but then again, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

From Amazon:

“We have ample quantities of this amiibo, but we still expect to sell out. Please act quickly at 2:00 p.m. PT on Friday for your best chance at buying Palutena. Demand is expected to be very high, and there’s no guarantee that she will remain in stock for long.”

Previously, we reported that Palutena would be an Amazon exclusive, resulting in a collective groan from Amiibo hunters who are starting to get tired of these hoops that North America has to jump through just to buy these things. Regardless, it’s looking like some retailers are becoming more proactive with communicating their plans to their ravenous customers, giving everyone a fair shot at snagging a rare figure before the scalpers do, which is a step in the right direction.

Will you be at your computer come Friday? Or are you over all the stress that comes with wanting to give Nintendo your money?

After months of speculation, dread, and deep, dark fear, rumors of the Palutena amiibo being available at all retailers has officially been debunked. On Twitter, Amazon announced that for the first time, the online retailer would have their own retailer exclusive figure in the form of the Goddess of Light herself.

Following suit with her Kid Icarus: Uprising co-star, Dark Pit, who is a Best Buy exclusive, Palutena marks a first for the popular Nintendo Toys to Life, serving as the only one in the series to be sold exclusively online. Promising to release details for everyone who signs up for email alerts on July 22nd, the figure itself will go on sale at some point on Friday, July 24th.

Like Brock Lesnar, I’m sure we all have our F5’s ready. Is anyone else planning on being up at an ungodly hour to secure their own goddess? Or are you over the whole Amiibo craze? Let us know your hunting strategies in the comments!

Briefly: As an avid Amiibo hunter, this video was too hilarious not to share.

Many readers will remember the famous Pokérap from the insanely popular anime series, and YouTube creator D-Piddy has taken the gotta-catch-’em-all mentality of many Amiibo collectors and created the perfect mix of the two.

Take a look below, and get ready to have the tune in your head forever. You’re welcome, and I’m sorry.

In late 2014, rumors swirled around the idea that Nintendo and Disney were in negotiations for some type of collaboration, one that many of us thought would be cross compatibility between the hard to find Amiibo figures and the house of mouse’s own Toys To Life franchise, Disney Infinity.  As it was  revealed at E3, they were definitely in talks with someone, but Activision’s Skylanders: Superchargers ended up as the home for Nintendo’s guest stars. Featuring Skylanders themed versions of Donkey Kong, Bowser, and their own vehicles, we were able to see them in action on the show floor, with some surprising new abilities for hardcore fans of all things Ninty.

Starting with Turbo Charge Donkey Kong, the iconic ape heads into Skylands with a snazzy, new jumpsuit to go with his trademark tie. Featured as a Life Element Skylander, not only using his brute strength to defeat Kaos’ evil forces, but DK also digs deep into his old bag of tricks when fighting off enemies. This includes throwing oversized barrels at enemies, attacking them with girders ripped straight out of the 80’s, and a Donkey Kong Country inspired barrel that launches him into the sky, (and on top of his helpless foes.) His vehicle, the Barrel Blaster, gives the Skylanders their own over-sized motorcycle to cruise along with. When DK uses it himself however, he Supercharches it and provides some powerful upgrades, which includes an appearance from Diddy Kong, who pops up out of the side car! Needless to say, it’s clear that Donkey’s portrayal goes above and beyond the levels of fanservice we would have expected, so much more appealing to own!

Skylanders Superchargers Amiibo E3 Screen 3

Not to be outdone, Hammer Slam Bowser arrives with his own special abilities, both new and old. As the name implies, the king of the Koopas comes equipped with his own golden hammer, which he uses to smash enemies with his standard attacks. As you would probably expect, Bowser serves as a fire element Skylander, with his fire breath in tow. When he wants to leave the action to his minions, he can call upon his Koopa Troopas to walk in a straight line. If this works as well as it does against Mario, Bowser can mimic his rival by jumping on his own minions and knocking their shells into enemies. If you want to get morbid with it, burning them with his fire breath turns them into Dry Bones. That’s not to say that the villain can’t take care of himself, especially when his new form comes into play. As Magma Bowser, the already imposing figure grows larger, spews lava, and somehow manages to become even more imposing than he already is. Throw in his Clown Cluster plane that’s designed around his trademark Koopa Clown Car, and you have a fearsome ally on both the land and in the skies. When Supercharged, the clown design gets replaced with something closer to his likeness, taking the form of the king’s flying fortress.

Skylanders Superchargers Amiibo E3 Screen 1

Sounds awesome, right? The only catch is that these two WILL NOT be sold individually to help avoid confusion with the other versions, since they’ll only work on Nintendo platforms. If you want Donkey Kong, you’ll have to pick up the Wii U starter pack. For Bowser, the 3DS version will be the version for you. While understandable, this is still disappointing for those who don’t typically buy the Wii U version. Traditionally, portable Skylanders games have been drastically different from their console counterparts, so picking that copy up isn’t so bad. For someone like me who owns the home versions on other consoles however, it makes things a lot more complicated to say the least. It’s safe to say that boosting sales of the Nintendo versions is the goal though, so mission accomplished? Oh, and why do they both come with Stealth Elf? I foresee a ton of trade ins in her future.

Skylanders Superchargers Amiibo E3 Screen 4

Either way, both characters are worth doing what you have to to get them. Aside from their new designs and amazing in game abilities, twisting their base switches between Skylander and Amiibo modes, allowing them to function as both. But most importantly, is this enough to sway you? Give us your thoughts on this new collaboration, and look out for a full preview of Skylanders: Superchargers in the coming days.

El Chucho is back!

Jonathan couldn’t make E3 this year (damn prior engagements), and so instead of passing on his, well, pass, to one of his many underlings… he used his power to send his cousin.

Yep, that same cousin that showed up in the Amiibo Drug Deal short back in April.

This time around, El Chucho asks E3 goers what they thought of the expo, and which games they were looking forward to, and which companies had the best showings. He also creeps out some females, and, well, just watch the damn short.

Want to see more from El Chucho? Yeah you do. Be sure to like, comment, and subscribe!

Most importantly, never forget: this ain’t no casa de shades.

Despite what many deemed a lackluster E3 conference, Nintendo still has a solid lineup for 2015.  One of their best titles at the show this year is Yoshi’s Woolly World. Developed by Good-Feel, the same company that brought us Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, Wario Land: Shake It!, and the Streetpass games Mii Force and Battleground: Z, Woolly World brings the same family-friendly story, gorgeously creative visuals and adorable characters we’ve come to expect from a Yoshi title, along with solid platforming, exploration and collecting.

One of this game’s most fun features is it’s multi-player aspect (1-2 players). I’m always looking for games with a solid local multi-player with a good challenge such as Donkey Kong: Country Returns or Donkey Kong:Tropical Freeze. That being said, this game definitely fits the bill, with some surprisingly difficult stages to enjoy with a friend, (or a Yoshi amiibo if human interaction isn’t your thing, but more on that later.)

Yoshi Wooly World E3 Screen 1

I was able to run through a stage of coop with our very own Josh Jackson. Fans familiar with previous games featuring Yoshi will recognize the feel of the control scheme right off the bat. You have your usual tongue abilities; eating enemies and throwing them or creating balls of yarn that vary in size and strength (like the eggs in previous games), throwing said balls of yarn, and the ever-useful flutter jump and ground-pound abilities. One of the main aspects of the game is to create the world around you by gathering yarn from blocks and by eating enemies and using them to fill in the gaps in the stage to create platforms and discover secrets. You have the ability to eat some of the world around you to uncover more coins, lives and secrets.

The stage we played was pretty straight forward, classic platforming. You can throw the yarn balls at blank outlines to fill them in and create the stage around you to progress. You also have the ability to use your teammate as an impromptu projectile by eating them and making them into an egg to hit far-off buttons and such. If you enjoy playing as fast-paced as we like to, some of the most fun bits will come from near falls and saves using your yarn on the fly. However, keep in mind that friendly fire is on, so watch where you shoot! Also, if you leave each other behind, the slower teammate will be teleported to the other, which makes active team work an important piece of effective gameplay. Flutter-jump mastery is also the key to finding secrets that may be out of reach and maneuvering around the woolly world efficiently.

Yoshi Wooly World E3 Screen 2

On top of the game’s very own woven, plush amiibo, there will be an array of amiibo support for characters from other games. The Yoshi amiibo create a CPU controlled partner for coop stages. In addition, Nintendo has teased that you can use all of your other amiibo besides the Pokemon to outfit your Yoshi with different patterns based on the chosen amiibo.

Yoshi’s Woolly World will be available on the Wii U October 16th in America. Feel free to check out our preview of last year’s demo, and make sure to check out the trailer below!
