Not long ago word broke that James Cameron and Jon Landau would be doing Battle Angel, an adaptation of Yukito Kishiro’s manga, Battle Angel Alita. But, with all the talk about the Avatar sequels coming out, where does this movie fall into place? It appears that Landau and Cameron’s next film following those Avatar sequels will indeed be Battle Angel. Well, don’t get your hopes up too high fans because you’;; have to wait until 2017 at the earliest to see this adaptation.

Landau spoke with MovieZine and commented on the adaptation:

I am sure you will get to see “Battle Angel.” It is one of my favorite stories, a great story about a young woman’s journey to self-discovery. It is a film that begs the question: “What does it mean to be human? ‘. Are you human if you have a heart, a brain or a soul? I look forward to giving the audience the film.

Landau made sure and pointed out that the sequels to Avatar would be their focus over the next few years:

Who we want to put in the lead role today and who we want to put in the lead role when the time comes, it can be two totally different people who would be right for the role. Now we focus on “Avatar” for the next four or five years. It will hopefully right after that.

If you’re unfamiliar with the manga:

When Doc Ido, a talented cyberphysician, finds Alita’s head in a junk heap, she has lost all memory of her past life. But when he reconstructs her, she discovers her body still instinctively remembers the Panzer Kunst, the most powerful cyborg fighting technique ever known. In the postapocalyptic world of the Scrapyard, as the secrets of Alita’s past unfold, each day is a struggle for survival.

So, will this project ever actually see the light of day or will it join the projects that people want to but never actually end up happening?

Yes, you read that correctly. It has been rumored recently that Warner Bros. was indeed working on a movie adaptation of one of their resident bad-asses, Lobo. And now the pretty reliable ItsOnTheGrid has given a first bit of the plot for the movie. Well, that and that it appears that The Rock, who was rumored to be up for the role recently, has signed on to play Lobo.

It appears that if their report is accurate, we won’t be seeing a space set adventure, but  rather we will see the bounty hunter travelling to Earth to hunt down some other bad asses. Maybe they didn’t want a repeat of their last failed space adventure? I’m looking at you Green Lantern. Check out the details from the site below.

So, how do you guys feel about Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson appearing as the bad-ass bounty hunter Lobo?

Director Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes) is already attached to bring a big screen adaptation of Supercrooks sometime next year and that is definitely some time away and we shouldn’t expect any casting news soon. However, Mark Millar last night tweeted an idea on who he thinks should play Johnny Bolt in the upcoming adaptation.

Personally I would lean more towards Reynolds for this one. I could definitely see him playing Johnny Bolt even though he does have a bad track record with comic book adaptations. But honestly i’ll be happy with either choice as long as the adaptation sticks to the series and we get the lazer room scene. If you haven’t read the series, and you definitely should read it, you have no idea what I am talking about but it’s one of the best scenes in any recent comic. Trust me. Seriously, go to your comic shop now and pick up the four issue series. Sound off below and let us know who you guys think would be a good pick for Johnny Bolt in the Supercrooks movie.

Not too long ago it was reported that Grant Morrison would be leaving DC Comics but it has been well known that he still had one project left for them. This project was a mysterious Wonder Woman project and now it appears, according to Bleeding Cool, that we will be getting a Wonder Woman: Earth One sometime next year from Morrison and current Swamp Thing artist Yanick Paquette.

While some fans weren’t too fond of Superman: Earth One (I actually did like this one however), Batman: Earth One received critical praise and both titles have sequels in the works. Morrison stated the following about the upcoming project:

“So Marston had all these ideas and it was very deep, there was a book by him which was hidden in the DC Comics vaults because they didn’t really want anyone to see it, and a friend of mine at DC sneaked it out for me one time. And it’s this thing, and honestly you can’t read it, it’s deranged, it’s like the guys just done mescaline or something, talking about his sexual theories.

…But then Marston died, and that energy left the strip, it just disappeared… when you took the sex out of Wonder Woman, the thing went flat. And the sales died immediately after Marston himself died and never ever recovered.

… I think I’ve found a way, but I’m not gonna tell you what I’ve done because hopefully the Wonder Woman series will be out next year sometime or thereabouts. But I think I’ve found a way to get all that back in again but it took a lot of reading. This has been the hardest project I’ve ever done.

That Superman’s meant to be this ultimate expression of masculinity and he still gets to be sexual, while Wonder Woman’s meant to be the ultimate expression of womanhood and yet she isn’t allowed anything to do with sex.”

So, what do you think about this project? Does Morrison’s take on Wonder Woman sound like something that you want to read?

Dean Parisot’s RED 2 has added yet another actor to it’s impressive ensemble cast. David Thewlis (who you probably know best as Remus Lupin from the five Harry Potter films he’s been in) has now joined the cast of the sequel as ‘The Frog’ who is said to be “an information dealer who got his name by poisoning the water supply at the Kremlin using a poisonous Amazonian frog.”

Thewlis will be joining Anthony Hopkins (Thor), Neal McDonough (Captain America: The First Avenger) and Byung-hun Lee (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) as well as the returning cast members from the first film. This instalment will see the retired C.I.A. Agents travelling across Europe to take on an all-new threat.

For quite some time now it’s been well known that Marvel Studios has wanted to make a Doctor Strange movie. They even have a completed script by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer that was sent out to directors over a year ago. Well, this rumor seemed to slip past a few people. It seems that The Playlist recorded a podcast a while back that mentioned that they might know something about a sorcerer surpreme’s appearance in Thor: The Dark World. The most interesting part of this? It’s more than just a cameo. Screenrant broke it down like this:

The Playlist claimed that Natalie Portman’s character Jane Foster could be working alongside Dr. Strange in a similar capacity as she did with Stellan Skarsgård’s Dr. Erik Selvig in the first film, and that Strange would be playing a big part in “all three acts” of the film, as opposed to being relegated to a cameo-type introduction. He would play a scientist (he’s a genius neurosurgeon in the comics) and someone who’s deeply interested in Foster’s stories and knowledge about Asgard and Thor.

Actually, I lied about something. The most interesting part of this was the rumor of who Marvel Studios apparently wanted Joel Edgerton (Warrior) as their Doctor Strange. The key word being “wanted”. They may have moved on and found another actor at this point if this turns out to be true. And apparently there’s quite a few bits and pieces to this rumor that could lead to it being true. The same source apparently leaked out the information about The Falcon appearing Captain America: The Winter Soldier prior to Anthony Mackie’s casting. Let’s also not forget the Orb Of Agamatto that appeared in Odin’s vault in Thor.

The Agamatto objects are the source of Strange’s supernatural powers, and according to The Playlist’s information, one of those objects could come crashing down on earth – thus explaining Strange’s cinematic origins. Is Marvel planning on introducing their “Phase Three” characters early? Well, that’d be a smart decision and so far Marvel Studios definitely has a track record of making smart decisions with their movies. So, what are your guys thoughts on this one?

Starting with the relaunch of XO Manowar earlier in the year, Valiant has been re-introducing their characters and more titles are on their way. One of the currently known returning titles is an updated version of Shadowman. This weekend at Baltimore Comic-Con Valiant is planning a big announcement regarding the “Eternal Warrior” character during their “The Future Of Valiant” panel. Valiant sent the following teaser image to CBR:

Well, it appears that the lawsuit surrounding The Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase One: Avengers Assembled Blu-ray box set has caused the release to be delayed until spring 2013. The collection was previously scheduled for release on September 25, 2012 and no specific date has been announced on when it will be actually released.

German luggage manufacturer Rimowa GmbH is claiming that their Topas attaché case, used by Nick Fury in the movie was reproduced outside of the terms of their agreement with the studio. They’re currently suing for trademark infringement, trademark dilution, unfair competition, and basically just saying essentially that Marvel is counterfeiting their case. he set, which includes a glowing replica of the Tesseract, is now being redesigned.

What will happen to the discarded plastic briefcases and what the new version of the set will look like is currently also unknown. Well, I know some people that are about to punch a hole in their wall.

Kevin Tancharoen, the director of the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot, has just released a sizzle reel that he put together while pitching to Lionsgate to get the director spot for The Hunger Games. The film of the sizzle reel is definitely different from the version that we saw in theaters. It appears that Tancharoen would have gone for a darker film with more science-fiction elements than the Gary Ross version. Check out the sizzle reel below as well as an except from an interview he did with /Film.

/Film: It seems like a lot of upcoming directors are now putting together these video reels for their studio pitches. When did this start, and when did you discover this practice?

Tancheroen: The idea of a “pitch reel” has been around for awhile and is very common practice for any director. Trying to pitch a vision to a room full of people is always very difficult verbally. In the past two years, the pitch reel has significantly become more demanding since technology allows for people to make mini movies in their own homes. It’s almost expected for a director to show some visual materials, but the need to impress has become elevated. At first, it was just some concept art, some storyboards and possibly a treatment. Then the rip-o-matic (a visual reel using clips from other movies to portray a visual style) became really popular. I even know some directors who do a full animatic at their expense just to take into a meeting.

Check out the full interview here.

Check out yet another visually phenomenal trailer for Cloud Atlas from The Wachowski’s (The Matrix trilogy) and Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run). This movie looks mind-blowingly fantastic and has put The Wachowski’s on the top of my list of directors for Warner Bros. upcoming Justice League film.

“Cloud Atlas explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future. Action, mystery and romance weave dramatically through the story as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future.

Cloud Atlas is in theaters October 26th.

Two new teams have been released teasing some new upcoming Marvel NOW! titles. These ones are definitely harder than the last batch and quite a bit more open to speculation.

This first teaser announces the team of Daniel Way (Deadpool) and Steve Dillon (Punisher MAX) and from the word “lightning” one could assume it may be a new Thunderbolts title. With the crosshairs over the name and these two attached could we see a Thunderbolts book that featured The Punisher and Deadpool?

This one is a little harder to figure out. The team of Dennis Hopeless (X-Men: Season One) and Kev Walker (Thunderbolts) could possibly be working on an ongoing Marvel Zombies series? Or maybe that’s too obvious.

DC Comics introduced a brand new Green Lantern this Wednesday in Green Lantern #0. Simon Baz is a Muslim from Dearborn, Michigan, who leaves behind street racing to join the intergalactic police force. The character has only been around for a small period of time, the character was technically first introduced in DC Comic’s Free Comic Book Day issue, but he is already getting an action figure next spring. Take a look below.

Fox has decided to remove Shawn Levy (Real Steel) from the equation of their upcoming Frankenstein. Rather than spend the $80 million budget that Levy wanted Fox has chosen to a pursue a more econmic route and has attached director Paul McGuinan (Lucky Number Slevin, Push) to direct.

“Levy wanted a big-budget version of the classic monster tale, according to sources close to the project, while Fox wants to keep costs on the project down.”

The film is being penned by Max Landis (Chronicle) who may be doing re-writes due to a new director being attached. In which case, I am hoping won’t take too long due to Landis currently working on the sequel to last year’s Chronicle at the momentThe actual content of the reboot is being kept under wraps but it’s being said that the story will be about “friendship and redemption.” Well, that’s definitely not what I was expecting it to be about. There has no announcement as far as when shooting will begin yet. This could definitely be an interesting project to keep an eye on with Landis and McGuinan behind it.

Need some new footage to hold you over until Dredd hits theaters? Well, then check out this new featurette featuring Karl Urban discussing a role that’s a real change of pace for him as Judge Dredd. Find out what the character’s creator thinks about the movie and Urban’s performance as well.

Dredd is the law on September 21st.

There’s only a few days until filming begins on KICK-ASS 2 and director Jeff Wadlow has been tweeting some images from the set to tease the fans. One including a look at ‘Mother Russia’, even though there has been no announcement on who will be filling the role yet. From the looks of it this one may just top the original movie and will stay true to the two-series that the film we be an adaptation of. However, if it does do that…we could see an R-rating attached to this movie, not that it would be a bad thing. But honestly from the looks of it this movie just may, well…kick ass.

The latest entry in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise will be hitting theaters next January. A creepy poster has popped up online earlier this month and now the first image of Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw 3D has hit the net. The film is not a remake but rather a direct sequel to the 1974 original and picks up where that film left off: a young woman has escaped the horrors of the Sawyer family and has alerted the authorities.

The townspeople descend on the Sawyer household and burn it to the ground, seemingly putting an end to the family’s reign of terror.  The story then jumps decades forward and hundreds of miles away from the original massacre where a young woman named Heather has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she didn’t know she had. But her newfound wealth comes at a price as she stumbles upon a horror that awaits her in the mansion’s dank cellars. It appears that the townspeople just may not have gotten rid of the entire Sawyer family.

The films is directed by John Luessenhop (Takers, Lockdown) andAlexandra Daddario, Tania Raymonde, Sue Rock, Scott Eastwood, Trey Songz, Keram Malicki-Sanchez, Shaun Sipos, Thom Barry, Paul Rae and Richard Riehle. The film will also feature several of the original cast members from the first flick including John Dugan who will reprise his role as Grandfather and Marilyn Burns, Bill Moseley and Gunnar Hansen.

Texas Chainsaw 3D hits theaters January 4, 2013.

There’s definitely no shortage of found-footage films and I can’t say that I am a fan of a majority of them myself. Minus films such as Cloverfield, Quarantine and Chronicle I find the genre to be “eh” at best. But this one actually looks good and with a name like Barry Levinson (Sleepers and Rain Man) directing, they’ve got my interest. This film is produced by the Paranormal Activity team of Jason Blum, Oren Peli and Steven Schneider, and unlike those films looks really solid. Possibly the most terrifying thing about this movie is the fact that is based on real-life tongue-eating parasites. My skin is currently crawling at the moment.

The quaint seaside town of Chesapeake Bay thrives on water; it is the lifeblood of the community. When two biological researchers from France find a staggering level of toxicity in the water, they attempt to alert the mayor, but he refuses to create a panic in the docile town. As a result, a deadly plague is unleashed, turning the people of Chesapeake Bay into hosts for a mutant breed of parasites that take control of their minds, and eventually their bodies. A brutal and harrowing creature feature for the 21st century, THE BAY chronicles the descent of a small town into absolute terror.

The Bay hits theaters November 2nd.

Before seeing Dredd, you may want to check out this motion comic which provides a bit of backstory to the character Ma-Ma played by Lena Headey.

The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One- a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

Dredd is the law on September 21st.

The prison is coming. The third season of AMC’s hit series, based on Robert Kirkman’s comic, The Walking Dead is almost here. I know you guys can’t wait. Today we got a new poster for the next season and much like the ones from the first two seasons, features main character Rick Grimes. Fans of the comics definitely know what the new tagline “Fight The Dead. Fear The Living.” is referring to. Check the poster out below thanks to the guys over at Shock Till You Drop.

Let’s keep it real here and admit that we didn’t need a sequel to Taken. However,  we are all going to see this. Because if we don’t Liam Neeson will find us…and we all know what happens when he does.

Bryan Mills, the retired CIA agent with a particular set of skills who stopped at nothing to save his daughter Kim from Albanian kidnappers. When the father of one of the kidnappers swears revenge, and takes Bryan and his wife hostage during their family vacation in Istanbul, Bryan enlists Kim to help them escape, and uses the same advanced level of special forces tactics to get his family to safety and systematically take out the kidnappers one by one.

Taken 2 hits theaters October 5th.

Earlier this week we reported that Mark Millar had indirectly confirmed via Twitter that Jim Carrey would be joining the cast of Jeff Wadlow’s KICK-ASS 2. Well, now Deadline has confirmed that Carrey has indeed accepted the role for the much anticipated follow up to Matthew Vaughn’s KICK-ASS.

Carrey is a major fan of the first film and even went as far as dressing up like the title character and singing a duet with Conan O’Brien. Are you shocked that he would take this role? I’m definitely not. With an ever growing and definitely impressive cast…this one just may surpass the first film.

Mark Millar commented on Carrey’s being involved via a blog post:

Nic is really good friends with Jim Carrey and it’s well known to everyone that Jim loved the first movie. In fact, I think he had lunch with Vaughn the day before that Conan O’Brien kick-Ass/ Superman duet you can see in the link. So we’ve been talking very informally about this for a little over two years now. We didn’t quite know what Jim was going to be doing in the sequel, but the entire team loves him to bits and I’ve been a fan since I first saw him. I remember reading an interview with Spielberg, a great one back in Empire for a JAws anniversary, where he was saying that Jim would be his choice for Chief Brodie were he shooting Jaws now. He said he could see the brilliant dramatic range Jim had as well as the comedy people knew him for at that time. For all these reasons, combined with the conversation we had with him on the phone, I’m so genuinely excited about this. I can’t wait to see what he does once the cameras are on.

Millar also revealed there is still one big cast announcement we should be ready for:

The movie runs from Hit-Girl #1 to Kick-Ass 2 #7 and fans of the comic will know that the part of Uncle Ralphie is still to be announced. He’s the big bad from the Hit-Girl series and you, my friends, are in for a treat.

Kick-Ass 2 hits theaters June 28, 2013.

Well, it appears we now know who is on the team of Jonathan Hickman and Jerome Opena’s upcoming Avengers title! So, from what we can see here is we’ve got Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Cannonball, Wolverine, Hulk, Captain Marvel, Falcon, Black Widow, Sunspot, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Hawkeye and well…I have no clue who that last one is. There appears to be a trend of mysterious background characters in these interlocking covers. I definitely had been wondering what they were going to do with the New Mutants squad with their series coming to an end in two issues. Check out the squad!

Well, not really sure how to feel about this one. I’ve heard quite positive reviews from advance screenings of this movie but to be honest this trailer reminds me of Van Helsing and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Could this end up being good? Sure. Does this look boring and quite on the “eh” side at the moment? Definitely. The last line in this trailer may end up describing the whole movie. But then again…I have been wrong before.

Catching up with Hansel (Renner) and Gretel (Arterton) 15 years after the traumatic incident involving a gingerbread house, the siblings have evolved into vengeful bounty hunters dedicated to exterminating witches. Over the years, the siblings became expert hunters, famous for their proficiency at tracking and taking down their prey. Although still recovering from their ordeal, their work is relatively easy as for an unknown reason harmful spells and curses do not work well against them.

The Mayor of Augsburg recruits them to rid the town and nearby forests of an evil sorceress (Janssen) who is planning to sacrifice many local children at the witches’ gathering during the upcoming ‘Blood Moon’ night in two days time. To make things worse, the duo also has to deal with the brutal Sheriff Berringer (Stormare) who has taken power in Augsburg and conducts a very indiscriminate witch-hunt of his own.

Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters hits theaters January 11, 2013.

So, over the course of time from Iron Man up until The Avengers, we’ve seen Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark go through seven different Iron Man armors. This year at San Diego Comic-Con we saw a new armor that inverted the red-gold color scheme, and most people had assumed this was the Mark VIII armor. Well, turns out we all may have been quite wrong.

[Warning: Possible spoilers lie ahead!]

According to Latino Review (who tend to be quite reliable with Marvel Studios news), The Mandarin’s (Ben Kingsley) Extremis goons are going to be too powerful for Stark solo.

The Extremis-enhanced bad guys under direction of Ben Kingsley’s Mandarin villain are going to be too much for Tony to handle on his own, so he thinks ahead, thinks big and has a plan. Tony’s about to go out and fight some bad guys when he mentions the Mark XLVII to Pepper Potts. Pepper asks what happened to the other forty and Tony just smiles.
From the cockpit of Mark XLVII Tony is able to control multiple armors in battle. We over here at LR have been vaguely aware of an action scene where Tony was going to control multiple Iron Man suits (presumably they look similar to distract his enemies as to the location of kill-able Iron Man Prime), but the number 40 seems…awesome. 40 Iron Men.

This is definitely no far-fetched idea due to Tony Stark has sent out controlled armors in the comics before. Could this be one fantastically visual spectacle along the lines of the final battle in The Avengers or another high hopes that fizzled battle such as Iron Man 2? Honestly, I think this movie is going big. Marvel Studios has had to have taken note of the fans disappointments in the last chapter in the franchise and would not be stupid enough to repeat it again. So, what are your thoughts on this one?

A few set photos have made their way online last week of the cast and crew of The Wolverine as they begin filming in Japan. Earlier today a first look at model-turned-actress Rila Fukushima as Yukio has made its way online.

The character Yukio is a blood-thirsty assassin tasked with killing Wolverine, but becomes enamored with him  when she witnesses his exceptional killing prowess. She is one of the two love interests featured in Chris Claremont and Frank Miller’s “Japanese Saga”. Check out a first look at Fukushima on the set of The Wolverine.

Some images have popped up online that appear to be our first look at some of the Goblin’s from Peter Jackson’s upcoming The Hobbit trilogy. Apparently the main picture is that of the grotesque Chief aka “The Great Goblin” who will be played by Barry Humphries. The images appear to be taken from a possible tie-in card game.

His goblin minion:

The Goblin King is a huge, grotesquely bloated monster that in the years of his tyrannical rule over the miserable inhabitants of the Goblin town grew fat and flabby. The Goblin town is a collection of skew-whiff ramshackle huts deep in the caves of the Misty Mountains. He commands a bunch of foul, polluted, with scars and ulcers studded goblins.

Basically, they are bandits, they live by what they can pick up from passengers on the passes through the mountains. The Goblin King and his followers manage to capture Bilbo and the dwarves. The Goblin King is more wily and smarter than it seems. He takes pleasure in torturing his prisoners — he almost succeeds to finish off Thorin Oakenshield and his companions.
