Daniel Kraus’ ‘The Living Dead’ is an all new fictional zombie story that was started by zombie and horror master George A. Romero! Upon Romero’s death, Kraus was enlisted to help finish the book and bring it to readers! Now it is here and Daniel guests on Geekscape to talk about collaborating with storytelling masters like George A. Romero and Guillermo Del Toro (as he did on The Shape of Water and Trollhunters), his approach to writing and all things zombies! This is going to be a great one! Enjoy!

On Monday we lost our friend Grant Imahara and I can’t just do a business as usual Geekscape episode without honoring him. So many of you loved him and were fans of his. He was kind, brilliant and it is not hyperbole to say that he was the best of all of us. While I considered Grant a friend and felt honored every time I got to see him or have him laugh at my jokes, there are many others who were closer to him. Similar to what I did two weeks ago for my brother Daniel, tonight I’m talking with some of Grant’s friends to hear and celebrate stories about him. If you’d like to be included, please send me a message. I don’t want anyone to not feel welcome and have asked some people who respectfully and understandably are not up to it yet. This will be rough at times but is intended as a small celebration of someone who is still with us in many ways. I’d like to keep telling his stories.

Smith, the filmmakers behind the new suspense film ‘Volition’, about building an award winning time travel film that has been compared to films like ‘Memento’, ‘Looper’ and ‘Time Crimes’ (that last one is my comparison)! With so many niche outlets and creators out there making their own content, it has either never been easier or harder to get your work seen! So whether you are female, black, LGBTQ+, Asian, Latino or other let’s talk about amplifying your independent voice in Hollywood by making your own content for your own audience. This episode I’m joined by the cast and creative team behind the independent show ‘Casting the Net’ to talk about creating a series with Black female leads, distributing it on an independent niche platform and the challenges and advantages that come with it! Series director Andrew P. Jones joins me along with series star Linara Washington (Killing Them Softly) and actors Willard Pugh (RoboCop 2, Airforce One, The Color Purple) and Charley Koontz (CSI: Cyber, Community) to talk about making the series, how the independent filmmaking scene is changing to be more inclusive (or not) and of course I’m going to ask about working with Stephen Spielberg.

In the wake of George Floyd’s murder and the ensuing protests and riots it’s been difficult for me to concentrate on talking movies, videogames and comics. And at the top of the show I talk a little bit about our relationship with recent events and our framework of pop culture. It’s a conversation we should always be having and are privileged by the fact that we don’t always have to have it. But that doesn’t mean we have to stop our goals of providing YOU with some respite from the real world as well. To help me with that is my friend Brian Klemm of the band Suburban Legends. We talk about making music under quarantine, why DC’s Lobo is his favorite character and what DC or Marvel stories most parallel current events. Along the way we discuss Farscape’s relationship to Guardians of the Galaxy, why I totally missed the boat on Stargate and a ton more! Enjoy!

Or did I save hers? Regardless, you need to know Natasha Halevi. I met her when we randomly saved each other’s lives during a race several years ago (true story) and since then she’s become a filmmaking triple threat (completely unrelated to the life saving story). We’ll talk about her new short film, starting The Fatale Collective and being married to an LA Clippers fan (named Sean Gunn). We also shower love on Lloyd Kaufman and Troma Films, talk filmmaking and Sean joins us to talk about filming Guardians of the Galaxy and which sequels are better than the originals.

The COVID-19 Pandemic has brought live action film and TV production to a halt worldwide. But as it continues and quarantines are lifted, it’s time to get back to work. What exactly does that mean to filmmakers, both at the studio level and independently? To help me with some of those questions is my own producer and friend Noam Dromi. Noam is a writer and producer with extensive and award winning film, video and new media experience (he also wrote ‘Dolphin Tail’… one of Matt Kelly’s favorite movies) and we discuss how technology is going to be a crucial part of changing the game and getting our films back up and running. Along the way I urge you all to go see ‘The Vast of Night’, we discuss what role podcasting and groups like Geekscape have in the future of entertainment and more! Also, previous Geekscape guest Matt Pinfield is in need of some help so I have linked his GoFundMe below along with some of the other podcasts Noam and I are producing during the Pandemic. Enjoy!

Filmmaker Issa LĂ³pez’s ‘Tigers Are Not Afraid’ is a horror fairytale told against the backdrop of Mexico’s violent drug world… but through the eyes of a child. Using fantastical elements similar to Guillermo Del Toro films like ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ and ‘The Devil’s Backbone’, it tells the story of abandoned street children fighting for survival and the ghosts that follow them in their journey. Issa took some time to talk about making the film, the challenges of mixing supernatural elements into a gritty, realistic story and working with such a young cast.
