It’s finally here!

We know that it took way too long (and we’re not proud of it), but we ran into some (many) audio issues and day jobs and stuff. This was really our first time managing live audio, so apologies in advance for the worse than usual audio quality – we already have plans in place to make things sound way better next time around!

In any case, this episode is nearly TWO HOURS of PAX developer interviews. Learn all about a ton of neat looking games that you’ve never heard of (but should be on the lookout for).

A big thanks for Shane O’Hare for making the audio somewhat audible!

PAX West was filled with so many incredible, unforgettable games, coming from giant AAA developers with singular booths that were visible from across the show floor, to a dude and his wife showing off their wacky, unique cooperative game from a single corner table.

I played so many titles, and wrote down so many more that I simply cannot wait to check out (I’m allergic to cats, but Meow Wars looked hilarious, for one), but one of the most memorable, unique experiences that I had this year was playing (and observing) the co-operative magic that was The Blackout Club, from Question Games.

Question Games is a tiny developer with some not-so-tiny talent. The company was founded a few years back by Bioshock series veterans Stephen Alexander and Jordan Thomas and has since grown to six developers. The company released their first game, The Magic Circle, a hilarious-sounding dark comedy about game development, back in 2015, and earlier this year announced the multiplayer, tense, atmospheric The Blackout Club.

Mikaela and I had an opportunity to chat with company cofounder Stephen Alexander, which will be released in audio form on the Geekscape Games feed in the coming days (I also gushed about the game during our Day 3 coverage of PAX here), but I simply couldn’t wait to share how excited I am for this game.

Here’s the synopsis to get you started:

You are a teenager from a small, modern town. Each morning, you awaken covered in mud or scratches, with no memory of the night before. You’ve heard of sleepwalking – but this is different. Sometimes you lose entire days.

There are others like you. Your new group of friends bonded over this shared secret, forming a club to investigate the cause of these BLACKOUTS. Together, you discovered a network of bizarre underground tunnels, hidden just beneath the surface of your quiet community. An uncanny, disorienting music beckoned from below.

You hesitated. But last night, your best friend vanished – and now, a mysterious group of adults wants to eliminate you. You must strike back, capture their activities on camera and expose them to the world.

The game feels realistic in that the kids (you and your group play as 14-17 year olds) are observant, know that something seriously wrong is happening in town, and the adults just don’t believe them. For some reason the town is an internet dead zone, so the kids make a plan to capture undeniable evidence, commandeer a vehicle, and bring it somewhere they can share it with the world.

Prior to jumping into the game’s multiplayer, I had an opportunity to play through a short single player introduction / tutorial that introduced you to the world, and the unseen, horrific creature that lives within it. The game launches in 2019 and is currently testing in beta, but artistically the game already looks and feels extremely stylized and impressive. The introduction had my character at home awaiting their parents return, and as I explored the house, the game’s impressive lighting system, and the detail put into often throwaway objects like furniture or even the texture of the spackling on the wall became immediately obvious.

In the introduction, the sun begins to set and then things begin to get weird. Objects flash and words show up where they weren’t before, and shortly thereafter it’s time to find a place to hide from ‘The Shape’, a physical creature that you can only see when your eyes are closed. Yep, the controller has a dedicated, easy to reach button that exists only to close your character’s eyes, because The Shape is a huge (and hugely unsettling) part of The Blackout Club. More on that later.

Once introduced to the world and some basic mechanics, I spent some time observing multiplayer matches before joining one of my own. In the world of The Blackout Club, the adults not only don’t believe you that something is wrong with the town, they also literally become your enemy after the sun sets. Once they go to sleep, the adults become ‘Sleepers’, enemies that can’t see (except in certain cases), but can hear very well (be conscious of where you’re walking, as different ground materials make different amounts of sounds), and basically exist to try to take you down, and once weak enough, drag you to where The Shape can get you.

This mechanic is super interesting to me, and almost gives certain elements of the game an I Am Legend feel. Some of these enemies are literally your parents, or your neighbours – people that you wave to as you walk by, people whose BBQ’s you’d attend in the Summertime. You don’t want to hurt them, and you absolutely can’t kill them. Stealth and avoidance are your best weapons, but you’ll also don items meant to distract, like firecrackers, which when thrown will attract Sleepers to wherever they land, or tranquilizer darts (which I’m not sure how these kids are finding) which will put a sleeper to… sleep, meaning one less enemy to worry about. A friend can also pin a Sleeper down in order to allow others to escape, but that same Sleeper will get up just a few seconds after being let go. Before rolling out on a mission, each player can also choose a ‘hero’ item, like a grappling hook to make climbing easier, a crossbow to shoot tranquilizer darts from afar, or a taser to easily incapacitate a Sleeper who may grab them.

In the PAX demo, players saw one section of the neighbourhood (where the missions happen), which is a set locale that has procedurally generated elements like enemy or consumables, or even open gates, garages, or windows. The demo gave two objectives, which were also procedurally generated, but from what I saw/played consisted of either collecting evidence or cleaning up after a previous botched mission, and then heading into the spooky underground mazes (think the sewers in Derry from IT) to find a missing member of the club.

In the matches that I saw, things seemed to go decently well. Most of the people in the room didn’t know each other, and started off a little uncomfortable, but it became pretty clear pretty early that things would be rough unless they communicated. People snuck around, revealing positions of Sleepers or which house the group needed to enter, or keeping watch while someone closed their eyes to locate The Shape, which is attracted to mischief or sin, or the player who was causing the most ruckus. If the shape gets you, you become an AI controlled Sleeper yourself. Other players can go up to you to snap you out of it, but if you’re put under three times, it’s game over for you, and the mission is failed if all players are put under at the same time. You also probably don’t want to stray too far from your group for a couple of reasons – if something finds you, you’re pretty much screwed if you’re alone, and if the group stays together you get a ‘circle of friendship’ buff which makes your stamina regenerate faster. Stamina, which is used for things like sprinting and climbing, is pretty important, so the more of it you can retain, the easier a time you’ll have. Both groups I watched mostly stayed together, and one group even made it through the missions with all of its members still awake.

The game gets very tense very quickly, and one thing that was hilarious and terrifying is just how much teamwork goes out the window when the players are surprised by The Shape, or overrun with Sleepers. In both missions that I watched, The Shape didn’t seem to pop up until about halfway through – during one session, nobody knew until one player screamed out “HOLY SHIT THE SHAPE IS FUCKING RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME EVERYBODY RUN.” As instructed, everyone ran, loudly and in different directions, and in a Live together, Die alone moment, once everyone was split up The Shape made fairly easy work picking players off. It seemed to disappear for a time before popping up at another opportune moment, and because teamwork had been all but abandoned by that point, it wasn’t too long before each player had been put to sleep.

Both missions that I observed were about 20-30 minutes long, and when I finally sat down to try the multiplayer mode (as opposed to the single player introduction that I’d played earlier) things went much, much worse. My team did not accept my attempts to communicate, was totally silent the entire match, and things ended about seven minutes after we’d started as The Shape already had us all (and probably caused each of us to nearly jump out of our seats more than once). It was an embarrassing attempt, and I’m pretty sure I saw the employee explaining the demo chuckling at our deserved misfortune.

Of course, through multiplayer you’ll be able to customize your kid (there were a bunch of clothing and colour options, even in this early demo), and missions will give you experience that you’ll be able to use to make your kid better at stuff like cardio and technology (a certain perk tree gives you access to things like drones, meaning you can scope out an area from afar), among other things. Perks are in the form of a card system, and you can swap out your load before attempting each mission.

I was so, so into The Blackout Club. The game looks beautiful, and the world feels as though there are so many interesting stories that could be told here. It feels like a crazy mix of Left 4 Dead and Stranger Things and IT and I Am Legend (novella) all in one, and I simply can’t wait to learn more about The Shape and the mythos of the world, while probably failing miserably and having fun (and being terrified) doing it.

The Blackout Club is one to watch, and it releases in 2019 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

I don’t enjoy online multiplayer games.

I’m all for local multiplayer (I’ll kill you at Mario Kart 8), and I enjoy the occasional round of PUBG or Fortnite (solo queues only because anything else is just too much commitment). In most cases, however, I simply avoid online multiplayer like it’s going out of style. Aside from a few titles over the course of my long, long gaming career, this has always been the case

Between work (and transiting forever to and from work), recording two podcasts, trying to work out a few times per week, a weekly Dungeons and Dragons game, attempting to (somewhat) keep up with WWE, and trying to spend even a little time hanging out with Mikaela, my video gaming time feels damned limited at this point in my life, and I find much more satisfaction slightly progressing a storyline, completing a few quests, or… well, probably starting a new title (new games come out every week, okay guys?) than I do playing some competitive mode or trying to organize a time for online play with some friends.

Online gaming just seems freaking hard to do – obviously it’s extremely popular, very few other people that I’ve talked to have an issue with it, and I’m absolutely the problem here, but I’m just not at all into matchmaking (something to do with being shy probably), and am only really interest in playing with people that I actually know. In the past, I’ve bought a game at launch, played it with friends once or twice (and had a blast), but within a few weeks my progress would be significantly behind those I’d been playing with, meaning I’m either jumping into their game leaving them feeling as though they’re on an escort mission, or they’re jumping into mine in an extremely overpowered state, removing any challenge from the game. Series like Borderlands seemingly force you into running multiple campaigns with different levels of progress which you jump between based on who you’re playing with. None of this sounds very fun to me at all.

Enter Sea of Thieves, Rare’s shared-world pirate simulator, and my next multiplayer obsession.

I dove into Sea of Thieves during one of the game’s various betas knowing very little about the title, aside from the fact that a) you’re a pirate on a journey to becoming a legendary pirate through whatever means necessary and b) the game takes place in a persistent multiplayer world where other pirates will definitely have their eye on your booty (treasure, not ass).

The first time that I played, I ignored the warning that journeying on your own was dangerous and only for experienced players, dropping in on a tiny island with (surprisingly) no tutorial, and with absolutely no idea what I was supposed to do (a tiny opening cutscene and small tutorial has been added to clear things up for the game’s full release, but sailing will still take you far too long to become comfortable with). After collecting some bananas, some wooden planks, and a treasure chest that I couldn’t figure out how to open (hint: weirdly enough, you can’t), I eventually found a small ship just offshore, and after a few moments of fiddling around, finally hit the high seas. In this moment, I realized just how incredibly beautiful Sea of Thieves is.

The game’s cartoony, yet breathtaking presentation perfectly fits the adventurous, mysterious, and casual (but not too casual) feel of the title, from the look of every aspect of your ship (or that ship off in the distance that may or may not be coming closer), to the uncomfortable creak your galleon (or sloop) produces as it rocks back and forth across the sea, to the bananas that you don’t even peel before eating (weird), to the NPC’s you’ll encounter on the game’s many, many islands, to the it-never-ever-gets-old sound of the herdy gurdy (which I’m hearing in my dreams at this point), and of course, the freaking incredible water that makes up the majority of this world. The water effects look like nothing that I’ve ever seen in a video game, and the entire world looks as though it’s been pulled straight out of some sort of lost Pixar film. Sea of Thieves’ presentation as a whole is simply astonishing, and there wasn’t a moment that I wasn’t enjoying everything that I was seeing and hearing.

Presentation isn’t everything, of course, and while it’d be impossible to look at Sea of Thieves without thinking “Damn, is that ever pretty,” (especially on the Xbox One X) many of the choices that Rare has made in regards to gameplay will leave some gamers coming back again and again, many scratching their heads in wonder, and probably a lot of them bringing their copy to GameStop after a few dedicated days of playing.

Sea of Thieves follows a fairly simple gameplay loop of beginning a quest (called Voyages) for one of the game’s three trading companies: the gold obsessed, aptly-named Gold Hoarders will have you hunting for treasure chests, the creepy Order of Souls will have you fighting skeletons and stronger skeletons in the search for valuable skulls, and the time-obsessed Merchant Alliance will have you on a race to find and deliver goods (and animals) with a strict deadline. The quests all follow the same formula – figure out where you need to go via an unlabelled map, a riddle, or otherwise, go to said location, do X task, return and cash in for some gold, rinse, repeat. You can stay out longer and do multiple Voyages before returning to an outpost for some huge rewards, but that’s where things get really interesting. Naturally, pirates are pirates, and if you sea another ship (filled with one to four real players) during your journey, there’s a good (very good) chance that they’re going to attack you and try to steal your stuff. The longer that you stay out completing voyages, the more you can cash in all at once, but the more that you have to lose if a more skilled crew decides to take you on. It adds a super interesting (and often stressful) element to the game, and some of the most exciting moments that I’ve had this far have been during the throes of battle, on a ship full of treasure, simply trying to survive long enough to turn in some chests that I’d spent way too long finding.

Playing with friends has already led to some of my favourite gaming memories… ever.

That gameplay loop has remained pretty fun in the 15-20 hours that I’ve spent with the game thus far, and so far I’ve found lots of other elements in the world (in addition to meeting other players, as mentioned above, which has remained exciting each and every time that it’s happened) that have added to the excitement and feeling of exploration. Walking the beaches of the game’s many beautiful islands, you may come across a message in a bottle, or a mysterious book that may lead you on a quest-within-a-quest and to even more treasure. Sometimes I’ll choose to head to an island that simply looks cool, and may come across chests, caves, remnants of previous island inhabitants, cave paintings, and more. Shipwrecks within the game’s vast ocean are fun to traverse, and have led to some of the most valuable treasure that I’ve claimed so far. Storms will mess your shit up (and you’ll stare at them in awe because they’re freaking beautiful), and giant, foreboding, skull shaped clouds loom off in the distance, tempting you with the promise of bountiful treasure, while (often) keeping you away with the threat of certain death.

Death, which at this point is one of my few gripes with the game. When you die, you wake up aboard a spooky (gorgeously spooky) ghost ship, complete with creepy captain. Here… you kind of just wait for 30 seconds until the doors to the captain’s quarters open. Walk through these doors, and you’ll find yourself back on your ship, in the water near it, or on a nearby island if your ship has sunk in the time you’ve been away. There should be something to do on this ship (right now it’s like a glorified loading screen or respawn timer, which, I suppose, is still better than just having a loading screen or respawn timer). The whole respawn system makes for a myriad of annoying moments when fighting other players, as unless your enemies on the opposing ship all die at the same time or their boat is headed to the bottom of the sea, it can often feel like you’re fighting an endless stream of the same people, leading to these PVP battles taking substantially longer than they probably should (they’re still super fun and exciting, but killing the same opponent five times over a few minute period can definitely get old). I’d love to see some sort of monetary penalty for deaths (Rare has actually noted that this is coming soon), which could increase when you die again within a short period of time and maybe after you die, respawn on your ship, and die again, you could respawn elsewhere the next time around, simply to limit the player-on-player battle time, and to make it feel like you’re fighting a few people instead of an endless horde of crew members. Right now, having your ship sink during a battle (unless it’s full of treasure) can often even be advantageous for your crew – your freshly respawned ship comes complete with the default quantity of cannonballs, bananas, and wooden planks, while the ship that just sunk you is likely running low on the same supplies. This simply feels broken, and something needs to change about it.

We tried to be friendly… but they shot us anyways.

As noted above, I’m still having a ton of fun with Sea of Thieves, even if the gameplay loop is rather simple at this time, but this doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t love to take part in some additional activities as I sail these beautiful seas. The possibilities really are endless, but things like fishing (please, give us fishing), card games (either in the pub or on the high seas), some five finger fillet, some sort of collection aspect, or even the ability to duel your fellow crew members with swords would make sailing or downtime simply fly by.

Really, Sea of Thieves in its current iteration is a phenomenal start, and it sounds like that’s just what it is, a start. Rare’s Craig Duncan has stated that the team wants “people to still be playing it five or even ten years from now. We’re in this for the long game,” and I’m looking forward to seeing this world evolve every step of the way.

I’m more enamored with Sea of Thieves than I’ve been with a multiplayer title since Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and at this point I don’t see that subsiding anytime soon. I’m having a blast completing voyages, finding treasure, and simply sailing the high seas with my friends. I could keep rambling on and on and on about “threading the needle” through tiny gaps in islands, or being so pre-occupied with playing instruments and dancing across the bow of our galleon that we crashed hard and nearly sank, or watching a friend die just steps away from turning in a valuable skull, leading to a tirade of words I don’t think that I’ve ever heard him say before, but, well, I’m overdue for some adventure.

Sea of Thieves is simply fun, and for that it scores a harrrrrrrrrrty 4/5. See you on the high seas!

tl;dr

+Incredible visuals, wonderful audio
+Casual style makes it fun for hardcore and casual gamers alike
+Drop in/out easily, you won’t be at a disadvantage because you took a break
+Simply fun, and often hilarious

-Not enough variation in mission (Voyage) types
-Maximum crew of four, no way to guarantee a second crew of friends will end up on the same server
-Respawn system, and thus PVP itself, feels broken

Side note: Back in January, Microsoft noted that all future Microsoft Studios published titles would hit their inexpensive Game Pass service on the day they release. This, of course, includes future games in the HaloGears of War, and Crackdown series’, but it also means that from the moment Sea of Thieves went live, Game Pass subscribers have had full access to the titles, with no limitations (aside from server issues right at launch, naturally). I’m loving Sea of Thieves, but if you’re not sure if there’s enough content to keep you having fun, or if you’re just not sold on the quest to become Pirate Legend, you can simply sign up for a free Game Pass trial and make up your own damned mind!

Sea of Thieves is also an Xbox Play Anywhere title, which means your digital purchase (or Game Pass subscription) means that you can play the game across your Xbox One or Windows 10 PC. This means that with one subscription to Game Pass, my fiancé and I have been able to sail the high seas together, which I absolutely appreciate in a generation of gaming that is seeing fewer and fewer local multiplayer games be released. I’m loving my Game Pass subscription so far, and I love the fact that with just a few clicks, I was able to install Sea of Thieves on my computer too!

The Jackbox Party Pack 4 is the 4th installment in what has become the yearly Jackbox series. This time around, Jackbox Games has brought only 1 familiar game, and 4 brand new ones revealed over the course of this summer, and while they all aren’t perfect, There are still plenty of great laughs and moments to be had with the game 4 iterations in.

Fibbage 3 is the first and only returning veteran game this time around. Nothing has changed other than new questions and the removal of the deFIBrillator.  The best new addition to Fibbage 3 comes in a new mode titled Fibbage: Enough About You. This mode is where you write out truths about yourself and see if you’re closest friends can get them right. It can be incredibly satisfying when you’ve perfectly guessed one of your friends, and even more surprising when you find out things you never knew about them.

Survive the Internet is the first new game of the pack and is also a contender for one of the pack’s best offerings. Players are asked pretty tame and tepid questions about their thoughts on medial and trivial things. Afterwards, those words are given to another player and are told to twist them into something vile and untrue in order to slander their reputation. Much like Quiplash before it, this game is not for the faint of heart, but you’ll find plenty of gut-busting and chuckle-worthy moments that make the game worth coming back to constantly.

Monster Seeking Monster is a mystery dating game where you play the role of a monster in disguise trying to date other monsters. Each of you has a hidden ability that’s only revealed if you are the highest placing player. You must attempt to date and gain hearts for 6 nights while trying to avoid having your ability revealed. It can take at least 1 full game to really understand the game which goes against the easy pick-up-and-play nature of Jackbox, but it can be very rewarding the second time around, as play styles can slightly change depending on which monster you are. The only thing weighing the game down a bit is that the usual 8th spot in the game is exclusively reserved for the audience this time around. It can be fun to watch it choose random pickup lines in hopes of dating someone, but it would have been nice to have an option to turn them off and replace them with a proper 8th person.

The 4th game on the list is Bracketeering, this pack’s answer to Quiplash. Players answer one prompt and duke it out in a tournament sized bracket to see who’s answer is the best. Players can also bet on which answer they think will make it out on top before, and during the start of a new bracket for extra points. The big draw of the game is the ability to play with up to 16 people at once, but sadly this ends up hurting the game in the long run. There are no options to readjust brackets for games with less than 16 people, so the game automatically fills in answers. The computer prompts aren’t especially enticing or fun, and more often than not, just draw the game out too long. There’s also the fact that ties are settled by quickly tapping the answer you want to win. In a group f 16+ this probably wouldn’t be a big problem, but when you have a group of 6-8 people, it can become unbalanced if someone is faster at tapping than others. While a great idea on paper, Bracketeering is ultimately undone by its ambitious scope.

The 5th and final game is Civic Doodle. In the game, the mayor of Doodle Valley tasks you with drawing murals and pictures of citizens in order to make the town a nicer place. Players will take turns competing against each other as they draw different murals on the same wall. Once a winning mural is chosen, the next players will be tasked to modify or add more to the drawing. once everyone has had 2 turns to draw, everyone must name the mural. Much like Survive the Internet, Civic Doodle is one of the top contenders for this year’s pack. It’s tons of fun seeing odd and hilarious modifications being made to previous paintings. the only downside is that 2 rounds in an 8 player game can drag out just a bit as 8 phases to one round is already a lot.

Overall, The Jackbox Party Pack 4 is still a great time with friends on or off the internet.  Expanded audience features are nice, such as being able to choose a collective lie for Fibbage 3, but others such as being the only 8th player in Monster Seeking Monster impede on some of the local aspects of the game.

FINAL VERDICT: ★★★★☆
