Briefly: Following the reveal of Charlie Cox as Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio as The Kingpin, Marvel has officially announced that Rosario Dawson has joined the Daredevil series for Netflix.

Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Head of Television said that “Rosario Dawson is one the most charismatic, talented and powerful actresses in Hollywood, so she was always at the top of our list for ‘Marvel’s Daredevil. Her role in the series is absolutely critical to Matt Murdock’s journey to become the hero we know as Daredevil.”

She’s no stranger to comic book adaptations, portraying Gail in both Sin City films and voicing Artemis in the 2009 animated Wonder Woman film.

The release reads that Dawson “will play a dedicated young woman whose quest to heal the wounds of Hell’s Kitchen brings Matt Murdock unexpectedly crashing into her life, while her own journey forever alters the course of his battle against the injustices of this broken city.”

Briefly: Following the casting of Charlie Cox as Daredevil a few weeks back, Marvel and Netflix have officially revealed the actor who will portray the Kingpin.

It’s Full Metal Jacket‘s Vincent D’Onofrio.

Daredevil‘s new showrunner, Steven S. DeKnight (Drew Goddard left the role last month) made the announcement via twitter:

Are you happy with the choice? Is there anyone else you’d rather see in the role? Be sure to let us know! Daredevil will premiere on Netflix in 2015!

Vincent

Briefly: Former showrunner Drew Goddard left the project this past weekend (leaving it in the capable hands of Steven S. DeKnight), but Marvel and Netflix’s Daredevil has just found its star.

Stardust and Boardwalk Empire actor Charlie Cox has been cast as Matt Murdock in the series, which will span 13 episodes and premiere on Netflix in 2015.

Netflix and Marvel are also developing series’ based on Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist, but Daredevil will be the first to launch. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as we learn more.

What are your thoughts on Cox in the role? Is there an actor you’d rather have seen in the series? Ben Affleck, right? Sound out below!

Briefly: Just yesterday word broke out that director Edgar Wright had left Marvel’s Ant-Man over creative differences, and now it appears that Marvel has lost another director.

Latino-Review was the first to report the news, which was later confirmed by Variety, that Cabin in the Woods director Drew Goddard had departed the upcoming Netflix original Daredevil series. Goddard was set to write and direct the first episode in the miniseries, and also act as its showrunner. Instead, he’ll focus his attention on Sony’s Sinister Six film, which he is also set to write and direct.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer writer and Spartacus showrunner Steven S. DeKnight has taken the reigns on the project, which will premiere on Netflix in 2015.

How do you feel about Goddard’s departure? Are you still looking forward to the series? Sound out below!

Briefly: So it turns out that Drew Goddard is a pretty busy guy.

Back in December, Sony announced plans to release both Venom and Sinister Six spinoffs of The Amazing Spider-Man franchise. A five person team of Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner, Ed Solomon, and Drew Goddard formed a “brain trust” to continue the Amazing Spider-Man franchise with a consistent tone (and maintain the connections between each film).

Goddard was already set to write the announced Sinister Six spinoff, and as THR has reported, it now looks like he’ll be directing it too.

It’s interesting to see Drew Goddard’s name here, as the talented writer/director was recently tapped to write (and maybe direct) the Daredevil series for Netflix. In any case, it certainly raises my hopes for a film about six villains that haven’t been introduced yet.

Are you down for the spinoff, or would you rather see the main The Amazing Spider-Man series better establish itself first

Briefly: We haven’t heard too much news from the Marvel / Netflix deal since its announcement back in November (aside from Drew Goddard’s involvement in the Daredevil series). Today however, the city of New York has revealed that each series (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage, if you’ve forgotten) will be filmed in the real-life big apple.

The announcement is set to create over 3000 jobs in the area, with filming set to begin this Summer.

You can take a look at the entire press release below for more info, and be sure to let us know if you’re excited for this authentic NYC experience! We’ll have more info on each series for you as soon as it’s available!

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, The Walt Disney Company, Marvel and Netflix Inc. today announced that Marvel’s landmark live-action television series, which will bring Marvel’s ‘flawed heroes of Hell’s Kitchen’ characters to Netflix, the world’s leading Internet TV network, will principally film in New York State. Produced by Marvel Television, in association with ABC Television Studios, this groundbreaking series is Marvel’s most ambitious foray yet into live-action television storytelling and represents the largest film or television production project commitment in New York State history.

Filming is set to begin in the Summer 2014 and will create at least three thousand jobs in New York State including up to 400 full time jobs. The project will include nearly 60 one-hour episodes focused on the 4 Defenders characters: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.

“New York is where the entertainment industry started, and this unprecedented commitment from Disney and Marvel is further evidence that we’re bringing it back bigger and better than ever before,” said Governor Cuomo. “And when the entertainment industry thrives, it fuels dozens of other industries and businesses. The competition for these projects is fierce and Disney could have chosen to film these shows anywhere, but they knew that shooting in New York means getting to work with the best in world. These shows bring New York’s superheroes home where they belong – along with hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars in new business.”

“Since 2008 Disney has directly contributed almost half a billion dollars to New York’s economy through television and film production, along with approximately 9,000 jobs for New Yorkers,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and CEO, The Walt Disney Company. “The Governor’s policies make this great state a more affordable and attractive location, opening the door for even greater economic investment and job creation for New Yorkers. Our Marvel series for Netflix will inject millions directly into the local economy and create hundreds of new jobs.”

“We thank the Governor and the great state of New York for helping us create the ultimate backdrop to this epic series. Setting our production in New York City truly underscores the authenticity and excitement we plan to bring to The Defenders and their ‘flawed heroes of Hell’s Kitchen’ stories,” said Alan Fine, President, Marvel Entertainment.

Last November, Disney and Netflix announced an unprecedented deal for Marvel TV to bring multiple original series of live-action adventures of four of Marvel’s most popular characters exclusively to the world’s leading Internet TV Network beginning in 2015. This pioneering agreement calls for Marvel to develop four serialized programs totaling 52 one-hour episodes culminating in a four to eight episode mini-series programming event. Led by a series focused on “Daredevil,” followed by “Jessica Jones,” “Iron Fist” and “Luke Cage,” the epic will unfold over multiple years of original programming, taking viewers deep into the gritty world of heroes and villains of Hell’s Kitchen, New York. Netflix has committed to a minimum of four, thirteen episodes series and a mini-series event in which the Marvel characters from the first four series team up as “The Defenders,” much like “The Avengers.”

This new original TV deal follows last year’s landmark movie distribution deal through which, beginning with 2016 theatrically released feature films, Netflix will be the exclusive U.S. subscription television service for first-run, live-action and animated movies from the Walt Disney Studios, including titles from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Disneynature and Lucasfilm.

“The Defenders are classic New York characters; smart, resourceful and tough enough to always stand up for what’s right,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix Chief Content Officer. “We’re delighted they’re coming to life on their home turf thanks to Governor Cuomo and his team.”

When Governor Cuomo took office in 2011, he made the attraction of the film and television production and post-production industries, and jobs and the economic impact they bring with them, a key part of his overall strategy to grow New York State’s economy. Since that time, he has signed into law several important changes to both programs to make New York more competitive in this global marketplace, and the results have been significant. Both programs enjoyed record-breaking years in 2013, bringing billions of dollars in new spending and thousands of jobs into the Empire State. The stability provided by multiyear funding has particularly encouraged the development of television series production work, like the new Marvel series, as well as long term investments in infrastructure, all of which creates thousands of jobs directly and indirectly related to the actual productions themselves.

Which series are you most looking forward to? Sound out below!

He probably won't look like this.
He probably won’t look like this.

Briefly: Just a few days ago it was announced that Marvel and Netflix have partnered up to develop four series (and a miniseries) based on Marvel heroes.

It’s pretty much some of the most exciting comic-book-coming-to-screen news ever, and now we know who may be writing one of the shows.

Drew Goddard, co-writer/director of 2012’s The Cabin in the Woods, as well as a prominent LOST and Alias scribe, has allegedly been tapped to write the Daredevil series.

The news hasn’t been confirmed by Disney, Netflix, or Goddard’s representatives, but wouldn’t this be a freaking awesome partnership?

We’ll let you know as soon as we hear confirmation of this one. Be sure to let us know what you think of the rumour, and more importantly, who do you want to see as Matt Murdock?

And you thought the Thor movie would be the biggest comic book news this week.

This morning, Disney and Netflix announced a huge partnership, bringing four original shows exclusively to the platform. Expect to see Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones and Daredevil in 2015 as Marvel looks to expand on its stranglehold on entertainment, (and our collective lives in the process.

Iron Fist Luke CageWill we see Luke Cage and Iron Fist team up on our televisions?

Check out the press release below:

Led by a series focused on “Daredevil,” followed by “Jessica Jones,” “Iron Fist” and “Luke Cage,” the epic will unfold over multiple years of original programming, taking Netflix members deep into the gritty world of heroes and villains of Hell’s Kitchen, New York. Netflix has committed to a minimum of four, thirteen episodes series and a culminating Marvel’s “The Defenders” mini-series event that reimagines a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters.

Produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Television Studios, this groundbreaking deal is Marvel’s most ambitious foray yet into live-action TV storytelling. All four series are set for 2015.

“This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel’s brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling. Netflix offers an incredible platform for the kind of rich storytelling that is Marvel’s specialty,” said Alan Fine, President of Marvel Entertainment. “This serialized epic expands the narrative possibilities of on-demand television and gives fans the flexibility to immerse themselves how and when they want in what’s sure to be a thrilling and engaging adventure.”

“Marvel’s movies, such as Iron Man and Marvel’s The Avengers, are huge favorites on our service around the world. Like Disney, is a known and loved brand that travels,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. “With House of Cards and our other original series, we have pioneered new approaches to storytelling and to global distribution and we’re thrilled to be working with Disney and Marvel to take our brand of television to new levels with a creative project of this magnitude.”

Jessica JonesJessica Jones gets her chance to shine.

“Groundbreaking” isn’t the word to describe this. Four series over the course of multiple years that will be spearheaded by Daredevil? Who’s to say that we won’t see these characters cross over throughout the course of this run? The possibilities are exciting, and will only serve to expand Marvel’s popularity with mainstream crowds. At the very least, this should get the bad taste that the Daredevil film left in our mouths.

We know you all have opinions, so let us know and the comments as we count down to 2015, which is looking to be a big year for the Marvel universe.

ShockTillYouDrop recently spoke with director Drew Goddard (Cabin In The Woods) about the blu-ray and DVD release of the film. During the interview he was asked if the opportunity arose, which Marvel comics character would he like to develop a film for. The director didn’t name any specific character but did go on to say it’s all about what the right fit is. And we may have an idea on what would be the right fit for him.

“What Marvel character would I not love to get on? That’s an easier question to answer. I would love any of it and I love Marvel, Joss and what they’re doing. It’s all about finding the right fit. Directing, in order to do your job right, you have to find ways to make it personal, and if we can find the right fit, then I would love to do it.”

Look, we’re just throwing this out there. In the past Goddard has talked about his love for Daredevil. Marvel is about to get those rights back. The guy has collaborated with Joss Whedon before. He can definitely direct a great movie. What more reason do you need for this one? By the way if you haven’t seen Cabin In The Woods, do yourselves a favor and pick it up tomorrow on DVD or Blu-ray.

More sad news from Hollywood. Omarosa Stallworth, fiancé of Michael Clarke Duncan, let everyone know today that the actor has passed at the young age of 54.

Duncan recently suffered a heart attack in June and it seems he was not able to fully recover.

Duncan had a huge amount of acting credits under his belt. He was best known for his Oscar-nominated performance as John Coffey in Frank Darabont’s adaptation of The Green Mile. His popularity skyrocketed afterwards, having been involved in a multitude of projects in the years following.

His passing is quite unexpected. The actor’s IMDB page lists numerous projects still production. It’s too early to tell how those projects will be affected.

Duncan was well known in the geek world, being involved in titles such as Daredevil, the 2003 animated Spider-Man series, Teen Titans, Sin City, and most recently as the voice of Kilwog in last years Green Lantern.

Rest in peace big guy. You’ll be missed.

Michael Clarke Duncan

Well, while it looks like Joe Carnahan’s ideas for a Daredevil movie have gone up in smoke he still is getting his at bat at a violent comic book adaptation with Nemesis. This project has been in development for quite some time now with Carnahan rumored to direct. However, sometime back in January, Carnahan tweeted that the project wasn’t happening. But then it seemed the project was happening again later that month when Carnahan and Liam Neeson did an interview for The Grey and the movie came up. Also during this interview Carnahan expressed an interest in casting Liam Neeson in the role of Blake Morrow, the Chief Inspector who Nemesis sets his sights on. Rumors also spread around that Michael Fassbender may be in talks to play as the title character but nothing was ever confirmed. But since then there has not been much word on the project. Well, that is until now. This morning Mark Millar made a post on the Millarworld forums offering a bit of an update on the project that confirms that Carnahan will indeed direct and that the project definitely is not dead.

Shot straight from a wedding in Manchester last week to the City of Angels and plunged straight into some studio biz on the Nemesis movie. Mighty Joe Carnahan is directing (from a script by he and his brother Matthew), but this much you already know. Fox wanted us to get in the same room for the first time and really hash this out, which was exciting. Joe has a really brilliant take on this and Matt and he are going to take things from here so I’m really happy. Absolutely no casting has been done formally although you can google the MTV interview from last January where he and Sir Liam Neeson are chatting about it. More news as it happens

I, for one, definitely loved this mini-series and cannot wait for the second one to come. If you’ve never read it at all I am not going to try and explain it to you but instead post a quote from Mark Millar himself explaining the story.

Marvel President Dan Buckley sort of paid me a compliment, saying, “This is such a stupidly simple and obvious idea. I can’t believe nobody’s ever come up with it before. You are the master of the stupidly simple idea.” Which I suppose is kind of flattering because everyone said that about “Kick-Ass” too. It’s almost too simple.

But, yeah. “Nemesis” is a reversal of the Bruce Wayne or Tony Stark archetype. What if this genius billionaire was just this total ****, and the only thing that stood between him and a city was the cops? It’s Batman versus Commissioner Gordon, in a weird way. Or maybe a super-villain version of “Se7en.” A billionaire anarchist up against ordinary people. The Joker’s the best thing in the Batman movies, so this guy is a bit of an amalgamation of all the stuff we like.

After seeing Carnahan’s sizzle reels for Daredevil I can’t help but get pretty excited for this film and hope it really does happen. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as more news develops on Nemesis. The project has been rumored to go into production sometime next year but for now in the meantime you should go out pick up and read the comic…just sayin’.

Joe Carnahan sat down and talked to The Radio Dan Show about his plans for a Daredevil movie that was supposed to happen until Fox pulled the cord. We also find out why he wanted to make the movie a period piece rather than set it in the present. Collider has hooked us up with a transcription on what was discussed.

On why there wasn’t enough time to bring his version to the screen:

I was brought in pretty late in the game, and my take probably didn’t help matters since they had an existing script. But I just thought that if you were going to do it, this was the way to go. This is the way that intrigued me…It was initially something I passed on because Christopher Nolan had done such a lovely job with Batman and unless you’re going to go after that trilogy, then that’s how you have to think. You can’t out-hurdle that, then what’s the point of trying? So it set the bar extraordinarily high, and I thought ‘Well, if we’re going to do this, let’s have a discussion about Hell’s Kitchen, and how it was really Hell’s Kitchen in the 70s,” so that got me really excited. But as I mentioned, the clock ticking and this kind of October drop-dead date, it wasn’t tenable. And having gone down this road in the past when you’re trying to write something and shoot it at the same time is disastrous, and I think you’d need an adequate amount of time to put that script together in the right way. My brother [Matthew Michael Carnahan (The Kingdom)] was interested in writing it with me, so we’ll see.

On why he thought a period piece for Daredevil would have been a good choice:

As I’m finishing my kind of reimagining of Death Wish, I think the 70s is figuring into my conscious and subconscious mind right now. I think it was the last time music and movies were just tremendous. We just cranked out some great stuff. I think that’s why the sizzle reel is able to be kind of abstract because people have such great fondness in their hearts for that decade, particularly the early part of that decade. I’m excited; you know the idea of having Daredevil on top of a building somewhere with the Serpico marquee in the background was enough, that image was enough, for me to want to make the movie.

Many fans weren’t too fond of the idea of another Daredevil film being brought to us by Fox until they found out about Carnahan’s attachment to the project. And after his sizzle reels were shown to us last night, giving us an idea on what the project would have been like, some of us are actually let down that it isn’t happening. Now, the big questions is…what will Marvel do with the man without fear?

With news breaking that Fox is going to let Daredevil’s rights revert back to Marvel director Joe Carnahan has decided to let us check out the sizzle reels that he used to present his vision to the studio of what his film would’ve been like. The reels are comprised of  footage from other movies and some comics art, and man does it look like we may have actually been getting an awesome Daredevil movie. Watching these kinds of makes me sad that Fox is letting go of the rights.

Source: IGN

In a follow up to yesterday’s piece it’s appearing that Fox is just giving up on the Daredevil reboot and allowing the rights to revert back to Marvel. This project has been in the works for awhile now but just kept hitting road bump after road bump. Following his tweets yesterday director Joe Carnahan (The Grey) clarified a bit on what his tweets meant today.

Guys. To clarify. DD pitch was tremendous and everyone flipped for it. The clock ticked down at Fox, that’s why it went tits up.

I will post the piece we did since it should be seen be all now…then you guys decide.

With less than two months before they had to get a movie into production before losing the rights it was pretty apparent that this would end up happening. However, I was quite interested in seeing what Carnahan had in mind after reading about it. It actually sounded like it would be a good movie. Well, he could always pitch the idea to Marvel and see if they want to go with it and give him a chance. However, the problem with that right there is that Marvel has a pretty big stable of characters and films planned already meaning that it doesn’t necessarily mean that we will see the man without fear on the big screen anytime soon.

Last week reports hit the internet that there would be an exchange between Fox and Marvel Studios to allow Fox time to get their planned Daredevil reboot into production. Then reports came in that Fox would rather lose the rights to the character than give up the characters that Marvel was asking for. Well, it’s not looking too good for the movie in general because in order to hold on to the rights they need to get it into production by October 10th. Earlier today director Joe Carnahan (The Grey) who was set to direct the upcoming reboot made some very discouraging tweets about the project.

Think my idea for a certain retro, red-suited, Serpico-styled superhero went up in smoke today kids.

We shall see. Time is NOT on anyone’s side.

This could either mean one of two things. Either Fox is giving up the rights on Daredevil and letting them revert back to Marvel or  they are going to go with another filmmaker who could get this movie going faster than Carnahan. Either way it doesn’t look good for the man without fear right now. We’ll be sure to keep you updated.

Things are about to get interesting when it comes to the Marvel/Twentieth Century Fox deal. Fox had until October 10th of this year to start work on a reboot of Daredevil, or the rights would revert back to Marvel Studios. But their director of choice David Slade didn’t pan out, and there was no way production on Daredevil could have begun by the October end date.

But according to Variety, Marvel Studios is willing to give Fox and extension on the Daredevil property, if Fox relenquishes rights to two characters from the Fantastic Four universe: Galactus and the Silver Surfer. (ain’t nothin’ free folks) Fox would really like to keep the Daredevil franchise, as they are  in discussions with Joe Carnahan (Smokin’ Aces, The Grey) to direct what is said to be a  “Frank Miller-esque, hardcore 70s thriller” take on Daredevil. Carnahan has yet to receive an official offer, though multiple sources are telling Variety that he is the choice.

Fox is said to want a grittier, less family friendly take on Daredevil, something Disney would be less likely to do. Maybe this will all work out for the best?

If Marvel/Disney gets the rights to Galactus/Silver Surfer back, not only does that mean we’d get a proper version of the world devourer on screen (and not a stupid giant cloud like in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer) but it would likely be in an Avengers sequel. And how awesome would that be?? And the addition of the Silver Surfer to the Marvel Studios cast means we could one day see a proper version of The Defenders on screen as well. This could all be good news.

If the Silver Surfer ends up back at Marvel Studios, that means all the main Defenders characters will be free to use if they ever want to do that franchise.

UPDATE:

So, maybe there wasn’t as much to this story as we thought. According to Deadline, Reports that Fox and Marvel Studios are going to do some trading with its Fantastic Four franchise to keep Daredevil in the fold were being adamantly denied by Fox studio insiders. With Fantastic Four being rebooted with Josh Trank as director, the article states that Fox insiders think it would be crazy to let two major FF characters go to Disney, especially when the studio is said to be very lukewarm about rebooting Daredevil.  Although Joe Carnahan has come to the studio with a take, it sounds like Fox is ready to let it revert to Disney-owned Marvel, unless Disney is interested in co-financing. That is what the current talks are really about, insiders said told Deadline. I’m sure this isn’t the last we’ve heard of this story.

While FOX may have no big announcements at this years Comic-Con we do have some news for you. It seems David Slade has walked away from ‘Daredevil’ due to his commitment to direct the ‘Hannibal’ pilot. This is good news for Marvel Studios due to FOX is now facing a fall deadline to begin shooting or the rights for the character revert back to Marvel. FOX may get a new director rush this film out to hold on to the rights though and once again leave us with a not so good taste in our mouths. ‘Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance’ received similar treatment.

FOX is also finally moving forward with the reboot of ‘Fantastic Four’ with Josh Trank (‘Chronicle’) attached to direct. Trank has apparently put all of his other projects on hold to  make this movie first and it may go into production next spring in order to see a 2014 release.

This October the creative team of Fred Van Lente and artist Alessandro Vitti will be bringing you a special holiday themed one-shot. ‘Marvel Zombies: Halloween’ returns us to a world filled with zombies where one kid just wants to go trick or treating.

Talkng about what we will see Van Lente says “The franchise is known for being really over the top and focusing on the insane idea of zombie-infected super heroes. And in the past, we’ve done stories with martians, robots, knights and many of Marvel’s monster characters. So for our Halloween one-shot, we’re doing more of a “classic” zombie apocalypse story about a woman and her son. The kid has grown up in a zombie apocalypse universe and when Halloween rolls around, he wants to go trick or treating. He’s heard about it and read about it, but his mom doesn’t think it’s a very good idea because they’re surrounded by zombies.”

So he asks her, “What’s the purpose of us staying alive during the zombie apocalypse if we never get to have any fun? What’s the point of just surviving?” He then sneaks out on Halloween night and goes Trick or Treating in a Spider-Man costume and events spiral from there. It’s a horrific but sweet little tale.”

On whether we will know the characters or it will remain a mystery.

“Exactly. If I revealed those things, I would give away the game, but I can reveal that this is going to really focus on Marvel’s kid and teen heroes; Avengers Academy, Runaways and even Power Pack. You’ll see more gruesome versions of these teams than we’re used to seeing. It’s sort of what “Lost Boys” did for vampires.

Plus, there’s even a surprise appearance at the end of the story by a Marvel character I’ve always loved, but for various reasons have never been able to include in a story. Their appearance in this is particularly apropos. It’s another horror-themed Marvel character that I’ve never been able to write.”

It seems like just yesterday I was talking about this movie. Oh wait…I was. An interesting little thing that was noticed by Empire is a Twitter exchange between David Slade and a fan. While there is tons of speculation here…we all should know by now that sometime speculation leads to truth.

Now while he could be just replying to the first part of the tweet (getting back to the Daredevil stuff soon) I don’t think its entirely out of the question. David Slade and Hartnett have worked together in the past (’30 Days Of Night’) and many times directors do like to bring back actors they’ve worked with before. Could you see Hartnett as The Man Without Fear?

Side note: Slade has since deleted the tweet. Sneaky sneaky. Maybe he said something he wasn’t supposed to…yet?

So, with us getting reboots to a number of franchises I decided to look at five properties that could really use a reboot (as well as the status of each property). Alright, lets start it off!

5. Fantastic Four (2005)

That trailer started off so good looking. And then we hit the 30 second mark and it is all downhill from there. This movie could have been great but turned into a giant joke. I don’t blame the actors because they tried their best and weren’t horrible (with Chris Evans being the best of the bunch playing a great Johnny Storm) It was just the cheesiness of this movie and the constant bad humor that really ruined it. Well…that and just not being interesting at all. A pretty “meh” movie that led up and impressive fight against a far from intimidating Dr. Doom led fans to toss this on their “worst” lists. But worry not true believers…a reboot is already in the works (after Fox apparently learned how to do a comic movie right from ‘X:Men First Class’ ) with ‘Chronicle’ director Josh Tranks name (yes please) linked to it.

4. Spawn (1997)

Let me start off by saying by no means do I consider ‘Spawn’ one of the worst comic movies. Quite the contrary! For its time it was pretty damn good. It had a cast that pulled off their roles well and a sweet soundtrack. People criticized it for being “overwhelmingly brutal, dark and cynical.” Aka what we love to see these days. So, if it wasn’t a bad movie then why is it on the list? Because of the advancements in movie making technology in the past 15 years since its release. Just imagine how much cooler a ‘Spawn’ movie would be coming out nowadays? And they could definitely go darker like the comics versus the “lightened dark” that the ’97 movie did. Now while McFarlane has been talking about making a new movie for awhile…McFarlane has been talking about making a new movie for AWHILE. We will see if it ever actually gets into production.

Side note: you could bring Michael Jai White back to reprise the role and i’d be okay with that.

3. Witchblade (2000)

Man…was this bad. I watched this and walked out of the room half way through. So, i’m thinking some of you may not be familiar with the Image title that this is based on so let me give you some info on it.

The series follows Sara Pezzini, a tough-as-nails NYPD homicide detective who comes into possession of the Witchblade, a supernatural, sentient artifact with immense destructive and protective powers. The weapon has bonded with various other women throughout history, the most recent being the series’ former co-lead, Danielle Baptiste. Others who have come into contact with the Witchblade include Cleopatra and Joan of Arc. Sara struggles to hone the awesome powers of the Witchblade and fend off those with a nefarious interest in it, especially entrepreneur Kenneth Irons. She also struggles to maintain a personal life.

Thanks Wikipedia. But for real…this TV movie/series sucked in comparison to the comics. I’m just going to leave it simple like that. And it looked nothing like the comics or even really attempted to. A remake has been in development ever since 2009 when a teaser poster popped up on the internet. However there hasn’t been much development since then minus IMDB having a Witchblade movie listed as coming out in 2013. We’ll see on that one.

However this teaser poster does look to be more true to the comics and Michael Rymer (Queen Of The Damned, Battlestar Galactica) has had his name attached to direct.

2. Swamp Thing (1982)

This fan-favorite film is one of DC’s titles that is rumored to be getting a reboot that desperately needs it. I saw the movie as a kid and thought it was cool. Then I saw it years later and wanted to slap younger me for ever thinking that. No disrespect to Mr. Craven because he did the best he could at the time but just like ‘Spawn’ this movie truly needed the current technology and can be a great film if done right. Aka follow current Snyder Swamp Thing…thanks. This film is currently on the backburner with Joel Silver (way too man films) producing, Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind, The Da Vinci Code) writing and Vincenzo Natali (Cube, Splice) set to direct. The film got put on hold as of May so Natali can pursue other projects.

1. Daredevil (2003)

Well…here is another one where i’m definitely not blaming the actors at all. Affleck was pretty good. Farrel played a great head case. Garner was useless. The real problems here were the piss-poor costumes, romantic sub-plot that wasn’t really needed in a first film and the god-awful need to include some alt-rock soundtrack versus a score. Daredevil is definitely a movie that needs a score being that he’s a blind man using sound/sonar. Sorry but I would be pissed if I was Matt Murdock and you threw on Nickleback. Facepalm one.

The movie did capture some of his conflict with his Catholicism and I thought that was great and the action wasn’t horrible. But this movie (and especially with current series success) really needs a remake. While the Directors Cut was better than the one we got in theaters, by no means was it a great enough improvement to make me ignore the bad parts of this flick. Currently David Slade (30 Days Of Night) is attached to direct but we’ve really heard no news on it in awhile and it could end up in film limbo like many other projects. Hopefully we will get some news on this one soon.

Runner up: Generation X (1996 – Made for TV movie)

Until today I never knew this was made. I wish I still didn’t. Scratch that. Let’s forget this thing exists and just wait for the sequel to ‘First Class’ and the rumored ‘New Mutants’ movie instead. Face palm two.

Here at Geekscape we read a lot of comics! And I mean a lot. If it’s on stands, odds are someone around here has read it. And as anyone who reads comics knows, there are tons of books on stands. Not only are there a ton of books on the stands, there are a ton of crappy books on the stands, but there are also some great books out there. You just have to know what to look for. In an effort to help you wade through the crap and help yourself find a winner, we thought we’d list a few titles that we are currently loving. So, without further ado, in no particular order, we present to you five books you need to check out:

Saga –  Written by Brian K. Vaughan, Art by Fiona Staples

Cover to Issue #1 of Saga

This book is only three issues in and it’s already one of the books I most look forward to every month. Saga tells the story of parents Marko and Alana, as they try to protect their new-born daughter, Hazel, all in the middle of an intergalactic war.  Marko (with ram-like horns on his head) and Alana (with wings on her back) are Romeo and Juilet archtypes, whose planets are at war with one another. They are on the run, branded as deserters and hunted by both sides. Vaughan’s writing is as sharp and original as ever. Fiona Staples’ artwork is just phenomenal, her visuals are truly a sight to be seen. This book has everything from the previously mentioned ram horns and wings, to a bare-breasted spider-woman bounty hunter (yeah, this totally isn’t a book for the kiddies), to Price Robot IV, a character with a TV for a head. If that all sounds wild and wacky that’s because it is…in the best way possible.

The Manhattan Projects –  Written by Jonathan Hickman, Art by Nick Pitarra

A page from Issue #1 of The Manhattan Projects (Image Comics)

This is Jonathan Hickman’s first on-going book for Image Comics and it’s a doozie. The book is set in alternate history that re-imagines such geniuses as  J. Robert Oppenheimer, here a literal mad-man, Wernher von Braun, an evil ex-Nazi scientist with a robot-arm, and Albert Einstein, among many others. The story asks the question,  what if The Manhattan Project, which gave the world the atomic bomb, created other deadlier and fantastic things? Yes, the premise is out there, but it’s oh so enjoyable. Nick Pitarra’s art is stunning and not like a lot of other artwork on comic stands. His art is distinctive and his character designs are just, well…cool. This book is three issues in, so this is the perfect time to catch up.

Daredevil –  Written by Mark Waid, Art by Paolo Rivera

Cover to issue #10 of Daredevil (Marvel Comics)

This latest volume of “The Man Without Fear” has been great right from the start. Gone is the über -moody Matt Murdock of years past with his dark/depressing story-lines. In it’s place, we find Matt Murdock in a much happier place than he has been in quite sometime. Waid is writing the hell out of this book. With thirteen issues to date, we have already seen Daredevil face off against the likes of Klaw, The Mole Man, and the New York crime syndicate (made up of all the major crime groups in the Marvel U). Joining Waid is Paolo Rivera on art. His covers for this book have been some of the best looking covers I’ve seen in  the history of ever! I absolutely love his art on this book. I especially enjoy the way that he draws Daredevil’s “radar-sense,” it’s hard to explain, it’s better to see it for yourself. Pick up an issue and give it a try, I doubt you’ll be let down.

The Flash – Written by Brian Buccellato & Francis Manapul, Art by Francis Manapul

Cover to issue #7 of The Flash (DC Comics)

This is one of the best books to come out DC’s “The New 52.” This book is great for new and old fans of The Flash alike. Co-writters Brian Buccellato and Francis Manapul have found new life in an old character and thanks to the relaunch of the DC universe, gone are years of convoluted and confusing continuity. In it’s place, we find Barry Allen, working for Central City PD in the crime lab, while also further exploring his powers and ability to tap into the speed force. Francis Manapul pulls double duty on this series as co-writer and artist and his art is fantastic. Even if the book had a weak story, his art would help to make it better and less noticeable. However, that is not the case, as both story and art have been outstanding right out of the starting gate. Issue nine was just released this week, so it’s as good a time as any to catch up. The Flash is a winner in my book and I’m glad to have Barry Allen back.

Scarlet Spider – Written by Chris Yost, Art by Ryan Stegman

Cover to issue one of Scarlet Spider (Marvel Comics)

Taking place after the events of the “Spider-Island” story-line in The Amazing Spider-Man, this story follows Kaine (Clone of Peter Parker, don’t ask) as he tries to make a new life for himself in Houston, Texas. Being as this is a super-hero comic and all, the citizens of Houston need saving from the evils of the world and thus we find Kaine, reluctantly becoming the new Scarlet Spider. The books motto is “All of the power, none of the resposibility” and that sums up the attitude of series very well. Kaine is no Peter Parker, he has no problem with extreme violence if need be. The story that Chris Yost has been telling follows Kaine as he has becomes a hero, despite wanting nothing to do with heroes in general, hence his being in Houston. The tone is very dark for a Spider-Man book and Ryan Stegman’s art helps establish that. His character designs look great and he draws the hell out of the fight scenes. Sadly, his time on the book will be ending with next months issue six. Artist Khoi Pham will be joining as new regular artist with July’s issue seven. I’m not how Pham’s artwork will mesh with the series, but if Yost continues to tell the quality tale he’s been weaving, then I think it’s safe to say that this book will be around for a while.

Well, there you have it…five great titles currently on sale. Hopefully, this will help you the next time you finding yourself in your local comic shop looking for something new to read. Pick up one of the books, heck, pick up all of them. Enjoy the adventures.
