For the past two months, Wednesday has been my favorite day of the week because at noon Pacific, a new episode of Yuri!!! on Ice magically appears on Crunchyroll. That bishounen-filled figure skating anime gives me life. And my life is all about plushes so it helps that Avex Pictures is releasing a plush tissue case resembling the one seen in many episodes.

Modeled after Victor’s beloved dog, Makkachin, the plush case measures 420 millimeters wide, 160 millimeters high, and 160 millimeters deep. Given that Makkachin is a poodle, it makes sense that the case is made of a polyester poodle boa.

The Makkachin Tissue Case is available to pre-order now from AmiAmi. It costs ¥3,672 and is scheduled to ship late January 2017.

Thanks to our friends at Loot Crate, I was able to open a box that may very well be the closest thing that I will get to a Hogwarts admission letter: The Wizarding World Crate! This subscription box is packed with goodies inspired by the magical creations of J.K. Rowling, specifically Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. November 2016 marked the launch of this particular subscription series. Let’s have a look!

lootcratewizardingworldnov16-boxoutside

lootcratewizardingworldov16-boxinside

As unassuming as the outside of the box is, there is still a hint of the magic within. In order to open the crate, you need to break a seal that reads “Muggle Worthy.” Pop open the hood and you are greeted with “I want to be a wizard” printed on the inside.

lootcratewizardingworldnov16-scroll

lootcratewizardingworldnov16-scrollunfolded

Much like the posters found in the Loot Anime crates, there was a scroll included that detailed the items found within this shipment. I was pleasantly surprised by the effort that went into such a tiny part of the package. When you first find it, it is rolled up with a sticker “seal” on it. Touches like this add to the feel that this box truly came from another world.

lootcratewizardingworldnov16-owl

lootcratewizardingworldnov16-owlside

What is a wizard without their owl? Included in this crate was a Pigwidgeon Owl plush. He is soft and well-made. I also appreciated the Harry Potter-licensed tush tag. If you must know, I named mine Archimedes.

lootcratewizardingworldnov16-keychain

Speaking of owls, also found within was a rather hefty keychain depicting a letter from Hogwarts (I guess I did get one, didn’t I?) and an owl. There is also leather tassel to make it all fancy-like. Flip the letter charm over and it has the Harry Potter logo.

lootcratewizardingworldnov16-shirt

lootcratewizardingworldnov16-shirtdetail

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them hit theaters this month so it makes sense that the majority of the items be related it. Perhaps the most eye-catching is the shirt, which has the front page from the wizard publication, The New York Ghost. The amount of detail put into the image is surprising. I could tell a lot of time went into the design.

lootcratewizardingworldnov16-journalfront

lootcratewizardingworldnov16-journalback

One of the fancier items was a MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America) journal. The pages are unlined with gold leaf around the edges. The very last page has an interesting image that appears to be a map of the United States with spell hotspots. The picture reads “Real Time Hex Indicator.” This was a special touch that I felt added more authenticity to the item.

lootcratewizardingworldnov16-funkopop

If you have ever been to a convention (or a Hot Topic, for that matter), you know that Funko POP! figures are kind of a big deal to many collectors. In this box, you have a chance of getting one of five Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them POP!’s: Newt Scamander, Tina Goldstein, the Niffler, Albus Dumbledore, or Jacob Kowalski. My package included Tina Goldstein. I will note that paint job on mine got a little sloppy near the wand, with some of the skin tone color making on to the wand portion.

I actually think this is the least interesting of the items included in the crate. There isn’t much to POP!’s in terms of design and they can easily be found in other stores.

lootcratewizardingworldnov16-pin

The final item is the Bowtruckle lapel pin. The accessory depicts Newt Scamander’s Bowtruckle, Pickett, peeking out from a pocket, as it does in the new movie. The pin itself has a good weight to it and seems to be of good quality.

Loot Crate’s Wizarding World Crate surpassed my expectations. The thoughtful collection of items were fun to open and I loved that each part truly felt tied to J.K. Rowling’s works. I whole-heartedly recommend this crate to anyone looking for a touch of magic in their lives!

I can’t think of a more fitting theme for October’s Loot Wear shipment than “Horror.” Now, all cards on the table, I have only seen one of the movies or shows represented in this shipment (scary movies are not my thing) so I may not be doing many of these items justice (but I will do my best).

lootwearoct16nightmarebeforechristmassocks

The one item I did recognize was the pair of Nightmare before Christmas socks. Much like the Sonic the Hedgehog socks from September’s crate, the image of Jack Skellington and Oogie Boogie is screen-printed on the garment.

lootwearoct16alienshirt lootwearoct16alienshirtsleeve

While I didn’t understand all the references, I was still impressed with the detail on the Alien long sleeve shirt. I will say my brother was pretty excited about it.

lootwearoct16walkingdeadboxerbriefs

lootwearoct16walkingdeadsocksAnd it apparently can’t be a horror-related thing without some mention of the TV show, The Walking Dead. The series gets not one, but two, items in the shipment: a pair of men’s boxer briefs and some socks. Both pieces share the same pattern, with silhouettes of different weapons from the show against a crimson background.

lootwearoct16shaunofthedeadshirt

The Shaun of the Dead shirt was stiff and rough to the touch. The cut of it makes me think it is a baby doll tee. The shirt’s image depicts shovels and a cricket bat (I think?) being grabbed at by the hands of the undead.

lootwearoct16edwardscissorhandsraglan

The final item is a women’s raglan featuring Edward Scissorhands. It was super soft and moderately stretchy.

Aside from the individual item’s quality, I don’t have much I can comment on. The shipment, with the exception of the Shaun of the Dead shirt, was made well and of good quality fabric. This month’s theme just wasn’t for me but that is a risk you take with these subscription boxes.

Genjyo Sanzo of Kazuya Minekura’s Saiyuki Reload Blast is immortalized in the latest statue from Kotobukiya‘s ARTFX-J DX line. This line of statues focuses on Japanese series (hence the “J” after the “ARTFX”). I personally love Saiyuki so seeing this character artfully recreated is a happy surprise.

gs-1

As you can see, Sanzo sits on the remnants of a statue while in the midst of reloading his gun and smoking one of his beloved cigarettes. He must be recovering from quite a fight, given the fresh blood stains on his robe. I can’t get over how pretty this figure looks!

gs-2

Made of PVC, the statue is 1/8-scale and measures 4.8 inches tall. This DX version includes an exclusive art print. Genjyo Sanzo DX ART-J costs $129.99 and ships in May 2017. He is available to pre-order at the Kotobukiya online store.

If you were a fan of Sailor Moon in the 90’s, you might remember Sailor Moon R: The Promise of the Rose, which was released on VHS back in the day. The Promise of the Rose is actually Sailor Moon R THE MOVIE and this January, select North American theaters will feature an HD remaster of the uncut version. I suspect it will be dubbed but am not positive. Adding to the excitement is the North American debut of the theatrical short, “Make Up! Sailor Guardians.”

Here is Viz Media’s teaser for the film:

Long before Mamoru found his destiny with Usagi, he gave a single rose in thanks to a lonely boy who helped him recover from the crash that claimed his parents. This long-forgotten friend, Fiore, has been searching the galaxy for a flower worthy of that sweet gesture long ago. The mysterious flower he finds is beautiful, but has a dark side- it has the power to take over planets. To make matters worse, the strange plant is tied to an ominous new asteroid near Earth! Faced with an enemy blooming out of control, It’s up to Sailor Moon and the Sailor Guardians to band together, stop the impending destruction and save Mamoru!

Information as to which theaters will be showing Sailor Moon R THE MOVIE have yet to be posted but it was noted that tickets go on sale soon. A special surprise gift will be given to ticket holders at the screenings (while supplies last, of course).

I hope you brought an appetite because this month’s theme for Loot Crate’s Loot Anime is “Delicious.” Food- and cooking-themed series take the spotlight and I am super-excited to show you what is inside! Let’s take a look:

lootanimeoct16boxinside

As in the past, the inside of Loot Anime’s box is decorated according to the theme. I noted the cola, a favorite of Umaru-chan, whose show is represented in the crate.

lootanimeoct16posterfront lootanimeoct16posterback

The month’s poster art is illustrated by littlereddo and features the crate’s mascot, Yume, surrounded by delicious sweets as far as the eye can see. Flipping the poster over reveals descriptions of the crate’s contents. Of the six included items, five are exclusive to the subscription box!

lootanimeoct16umarufigure lootanimeoct16umarufigurebox

Despite being the only non-exclusive item in this month’s box, the Himouto! Umaru-chan “I love Cola” Trading Figure was my favorite in the bunch. It was made by Good Smile Company, the Japanese figure company responsible for Nendoroids and figma, and I could tell the trading figure is of a similar high quality. It is a slightly hefty weight and the paint job is clean. The figure comes with a small clear pedestal for display.

lootanimeoct16gudetamaplush

The Gudetama plush was a close second favorite. The toy is a little more than palm-sized and has PVC pellets in the bottom of his belly along with the fluff. Gudetama himself is a soft minky fabric while his yolk bottom and bacon “blanket” are felt.

lootanimeoct16mangafront lootanimeoct16mangaback

The anime version of Sweetness and Lightning has been a big hit on Crunchyroll. I haven’t gotten around to seeing it yet (I am hooked on Yuri!!!! On ICE) so I was excited to see the manga packed in. Loot Anime’s print of the manga has an exclusive variant cover.

lootanimeoct16ramenbowlinside lootanimeoct16ramenbowloutside

The only real weak link in the box was the Naruto: Shippuden ramen bowl. Sure, it is cool that you get a replica of the one that Naruto uses in the show but with the care instructions of “Do not microwave,” “Do not Soak,” and “Hand wash only,” it is clear this for display only. I much preferred the bento box that was packed in a few crates prior. A display-only bowl seems like a waste to me.

lootanimeoct16apronpackaging lootanimeoct16apron

While not as useless as the bowl, the included Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma apron is “for costume use only.” I guess cosplayers would get a kick out of this one at least.

lootanimeoct16phonecharm

This month’s phone charm was definitely my favorite iteration of the item so far. The little parfait looks sweet and the accompanying spoon is a darling addition.

While two of the six items were a moderate bummer, I am still happy with this month’s crate. The excitement I got from the other four items easily overshadowed any disappointment I felt from the bowl and apron. As always, it is clear that Loot Crate put a lot of thought into what series are to be included with the themed box.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King was heralded as one of the finest RPGs on the Playstation 2 (and potentially of all time). Fans of the title as well as newcomers will be pleased to learn that Nintendo has announced the release date for the Nintendo 3DS remake: January 20, 2017.

This release is no mere copy, however. Beyond being portable (which let’s face it is pretty awesome), the 3DS version will feature two new playable characters, additional side quests, an alternative ending, and the ability to spot enemies on the map a la Dragon Quest VIIPlayers will also be able to speed up battle animations and make use of a “Quick-Save” function.

Players can take snapshots during battles and cutscenes, even striking special poses, then adding stickers, banners, and filters to their photo. As the heroes progress in the story, they will meet Cameron Obscura in Port Prospect, granting them access to Cameron’s Codex. This item rewards players for capturing specific events, characters, and monsters on film. With the Nintendo 3DS’s Streetpass function, photos can be shared, with other players giving images they like a “thumbs up.” The more “thumbs up” a photo has, the greater the chance of being gifted a new item.

You can learn more about Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King on the official site (yes, it is for the PS2 version – don’t ask me why Nintendo linked to it) or on Nintendo’s product page.

Disney XD gives us another reason to tune in with their upcoming animated TV series, Big Hero 6. Based on the similarly-named film, the show will kick off right after the events of the movie. We can not only expect Hiro to be fighting off baddies with his buddies, Wasabi, Fred, GoGo, Honey Lemon, and Baymax, but also taking on the challenges of attending college at San Fransokyo Institute of Technology.

The show was announced last March but the cast was just revealed today. Many of the film’s actors will reprise their role in the show, which is a pleasant surprise. From the original cast, there is Maya Rudolph (Aunt Cass), Jamie Chung (GoGo), Scott Adsit (Baymax), Alan Tudyk (Alistair Krei), Ryan Potter (Hiro), David Shaughnessy (Heathcliff), and Stan Lee (Fred’s dad). Wasabi and Fred will have new voices, Khary Payton and Brooks Wheelan respectively.

BIG HERO 6 - "Big Hero 6," an animated television series for kids, tweens and families based on Walt Disney Animation Studios' Academy Award-winning feature film inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, has begun production for a 2017 premiere on Disney XD platforms around the world. (Disney XD)

Additionally, voices of several new characters were named: Jennifer Lewis (Professor Granville), Andrew Scott (Obake), Andy Richter (Globby), Sean Giambrone (Richardson Mole), John Ross Bowie (Mei), Diedrich Bader (Bluff Dunder), Susan Sullivan (Fred’s mom), and Haley Tju (Karmi).

Big Hero 6 the series will premier sometime in 2017.

In the previous Nintendo Direct, nestled among the numerous new titles announced was news of an update to the much-beloved Nintendo 3DS game, Animal Crossing: New Leaf. The update, entitled “Welcome amiibo,” was briefly touched upon but viewers were promised a more-indepth video later in the year. Well, that time has almost arrived. Tomorrow, November 2, at 7 a.m. Pacific Time, an Animal Crossing: New Leaf-centric Nintendo Direct will air.

Beyond the video, the official Animal Crossing twitter account has released a few screenshots as well as a note that the update will clear out all those weeds in your town that have no doubt accumulated.

And let’s not forget about those 50 new Animal Crossing amiibo cards that release December 2! What an exciting time to be a mayor, right?

Viz Media’s Sushi: Jiro Gastronomy is unlike any other title I have seen in their library. Written by Jiro Ono and Yoshikazu Ono, the book can be seen as a survey of the world of sushi as well as view into  Jiro Ono’s Tokyo, Japan-based restaurants, Sukiyabashi Jiro.

[Photo by Kenta Izumi] SUSHI SUKIYABASHI JIRO: JIRO GASTRONOMY© 2014 Jiro ONO, Masuhiro YAMAMOTO/SHOGAKUKAN
[Photo by Kenta Izumi] SUSHI SUKIYABASHI JIRO: JIRO GASTRONOMY© 2014 Jiro ONO, Masuhiro YAMAMOTO/SHOGAKUKAN

The majority of the pages are used for the “Omakase Tasting Menu,” in which each spread of pages is dedicated to a certain sushi. You can see two samples from this chapter below.

[Photo by Hiroshi Suga] SUSHI SUKIYABASHI JIRO: JIRO GASTRONOMY© 2014 Jiro ONO, Masuhiro YAMAMOTO/SHOGAKUKAN

I loved the inclusion of the Japanese name for the sushi, both in Romaji and Hiragana. I think it might come in handy for ordering from Japanese menus. Each of the fish descriptions mentions when that particular one is available to order. For example, you will note that the Abalone is only in season from May to September whereas the Golden Cuttlefish is fine all year round.

The sushi descriptions for the sample pages put focus on how the restaurant, Sukiyabashi Jiro, handles each particular type of sushi. And while some entries dedicated more time than others to this topic, it is always mentioned.

Perhaps the biggest draw for Sushi: Jiro Gastronomy isn’t so much the information contained within but the beautiful accompanying images. I was so hungry after reading this book. I have no clue how the photographer did it but they managed to perfectly capture all the alluring aspects of each particular dish.

The section on “How to Eat Sushi” was actually my favorite part. It was amusing to read as well as informative. Some of the descriptions, such as the one shown above (which I was particularly fond of), have a more lengthy description. Others are much more concise, about one short sentence.

The final section “Dining at Sukiyabashi Jiro” is very short, basically giving a rundown of what to expect when visiting their establishments. It was nice addition for people traveling to Japan who might want to eat there after staring at their food for so long. Thankfully, addresses to both locations as well as their business hours are also in this chapter.

Sushi: Jiro Gastronomy earns a tasty 5 out of 5. It isn’t the type of book I would normally read but it was informative, well-written, and dang if those pictures didn’t make me salivate.

Plushsmith AnnaTheRed is a freaking stuffed animal genius. While she has made some amazing plushes in the past, Anna may have outdone herself with her homage to the Nintendo Switch. Building on the controller’s likeness to a puppy face, she crafted her own Nintendo Switch Dog plush.

You can see more of Anna’s Nintendo Switch Dog plush on her twitter. She also compiled the photos into a flickr album.

I don’t see Anna selling this little cutie but, in my opinion, Nintendo is missing out on a goldmine if they don’t commission her to make a line of these (or more likely get permission to reproduce them).

Gurumin 3D: A Monstrous Adventure is a remake of a Playstation Portable title that was later remastered for Steam. Developed by Nihon Falcom and localized by Mastiff, the action-RPG was one of my most beloved game way back when it was first released. But after so many years, how does it hold up?

gurumin-3ds-in-frame-08

gurumin-3ds-in-frame-01

Let’s start with the game’s world. As the young heroine Parin, your time is split between the world connected to Monster Village and the human-populated Tiese Town (actually it is more 80-20). The characters are charming as is the dialogue. There is English language voice-acting but it feels a tad stilted at times. Back in the PSP days when voice-acting was a big deal, just about anything would be impressive. By today’s standards, not so much.

Gurumin 3D‘s music is where I am most disappointed, though. To be clear, the soundtrack itself is superb, lighthearted and quirky. Unfortunately, every time you hit a load-screen (which happens on a relatively frequent basis), the sound stutters and crackles. It was jarring and took away from the experience. And while playing the game on mute is an option (and one that I choose most of the time), it still a shame. I contacted Mastiff about this issue and they did mention that:

If there is an opportunity to provide an update down the road perhaps it can be something that we can have the dev team look into.

gurumin-3ds-in-frame-02

Levels mainly consist of platforming, relatively simple puzzles and fighting off baddies using your Legendary Drill. The locales vary but all contain charm and encourage you to explore your surroundings. Venture off the beaten path and you will be rewarded with extra challenges often resulting in treasure chests. Clearing these side areas are also key to getting a Master ranking for the level.

gurumin-3ds-in-frame-09

As you progress through the game, Parin acquires drill parts that imbue her Legendary Drill with elemental properties, which is key to solving certain puzzles. Collecting her equipment (the catch-all category for accessories) was one of my big obsessions in the game. Some of the items can only be obtained by trading in gold medals earned by clearing a level with a Master ranking, which provided a big incentive to revisit previous areas. Not only are these items cute (I adore when equipment actually changes a character’s appearance) but their abilities add another level of strategy. For example, the Goggles mitigate water damage so wearing them during a level with water hazards is probably good idea. Thankfully, you can switch out equipment on the fly, either through the standard menu screen or through the 3DS touchscreen.

Gurumin 3D: A Monstrous Adventure gets a 4 out of 5. Even with the sound issues, I enjoyed this game. It is one of those titles that I consider “good, clean fun.”

Hashtag Collectibles, makers of those amazing Blobfish plushes, is venturing into canine territory with their new plush Doge. No, that wasn’t a typo. I meant “Doge” as in that well-known meme with the words and the dog photos. I know you know what I am talking about.photo_jul_25_3_49_14_pm_1024x1024

Anyways, back to plush toys. The Doge plush measures six inches by nine inches, a good desktop size. It costs $16.99. In my experience, Hashtag Collectibles makes high quality plushes. If you are a lover of internet-famous animals or simply a fan of the breed, I would totally check it out.

tardigrade_plushie_1024x1024

Oh and while you are over at Hashtag Collectibles’ online store, take a look at the Stuffed Water Bear. You will thank me later.

I usually like to build up to the whole “take a look a the trailer” thing but this one for Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2 is so good it needs no introduction.

You watched it, right? Good. So now for the summary part. This video admittedly doesn’t tip its hand in terms of plot but that is forgivable given that it is merely a sneak trailer rather than a full one. What we do see is the same humor and heart that made the original Guardians of the Galaxy so great. And come on, who didn’t miss that soundtrack?

There is clearly some romantic conflict between Peter Quill (although he prefers to known as Star-Lord) and Gamora. We also see snippets of Drax, Rocket Raccoon, Yandu, Nebula, and Baby Groot (who is adorable, by the way!). According to ComicBook.com, the film will follow the group’s journey to learn the truth about Peter’s father. There seems to be a focus on the concept of “family” with Gamora’s sister, Nebula, adding additional issues (the whole trying-to-kill-them thing).

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters May 5, 2017.

Persona is already out in Japan but North America still has a bit of a wait until its February 14, 2017 release date. The good news is Atlus USA posted some key information about its Western edition, its voice actors. Without further ado, here are our voice actors for Persona 5:

  • Xander Mobus as the protagonist

  • Cassandra Morris as Morgana

  • Max Mittelman as Ryuji Sakamoto

  • Erika Harlacher as Ann Takamaki

  • Matt Mercer as Yusuke Kitagawa

  • Cherami Leigh as Makoto Niijima

  • Erica Lindbeck as Futaba Sakura

  • Xanthe Huynh as Haru Okumura

  • Robbie Daymond as Goro Akechi

Along with the announcement of the cast, Atlus also released a video interview with Xander Mobus, the voice of the protagonist. And I have to say, the guy has a sense of humor.

But wait, that isn’t the only video fans were gifted with this morning.  We also have a character trailer highlighting the protagonist. I don’t know about you but I am so psyched for this game!

Persona 5 is exclusive to the Playstation 3 and the Playstation 4. PS4 owners definitely have the advantage in terms of pre-order choices, though. PS3 players only have the option of the standard edition, no bells and whistles, while the PS4 will have a Steel Book Launch Edition as well as the “Take Your Heart” Premium Edition (the second image). It should be noted that both of these editions are limited in number however.glamshot-lesb glamshot-tyhpe

What do you think of the news? Will you be getting one of the special editions? Let us know in the comments!

It is another big news day for Pokémon Sun and Moon! A trailer debuted this morning and there are tons of new Pokémon to get acquainted with. But first, let’s take a look at that trailer:

Holy pokéballs, how exciting! Not only do we have eight new Pokémon but we also got a glimpse at two more key characters: Olivia and Ilima.Pokemon Sun and Moon- Kahuna Olivia

Olivia is the Kahuna of Akala Island. She favors Rock-types.

Pokemon Sun and Moon Captain Ilima

As you can see from the screenshot, Trial Captain Ilima specializes in Normal-type Pokémon.

silvally

Perhaps the most exciting of the Pokémon shown in the trailer was Silvally, the evolution of Type: Null. Its ability, “RKS System,” allows Silvally to change its type based on its held item (it is initially a Normal-type). Likewise, the elemental-type of Silvally’s exclusive move, “Multi-Attack,” is also dependent on its held item. There seems to be a backstory behind this Pokémon, with the official website stating that it was “created to oppose a threat.”

hakamo-o kommo-o

The second and third evolutions of Jangmo-o are Hakamo-o and Kommo-o, respectively. These Dragon/Fighting-types either have the ability “Bulletproof” or “Soundproof.” Kommo-o has an exclusive move called “Clanging Scales,” which lowers the users defense after the attack.

steenee tsareena

Next up are the second and third evolutions of the Grass-type Bounsweet: Steenee and Tsareena. Steenee is cute but doesn’t stand out that much. Tsareena on the other hand, not only has a unique ability but also a move only it can learn. One of Tsareena’s potential abilities is “Queenly Majesty,” which prevents its opponents from making use of priority moves. Its special move, “Trop Kick,” lowers the victim’s attack as well as dealing damage.

ribombee

Ribombee is the evolution of Cutiefly and is a Bug/Fairy-type. It can have either ability “Honey Gather” or “Shield Dust.”

alolan-grimeralolan-muk

And it isn’t a new Pokémon trailer without another Alola Form. This time we get Alolan Grimer and its evolution, Alolan Muk. I must say, I think this form is an improvement over the original. Alolan Muk and Alolan Grimer are Poison/Dark-types. They can have the ability “Poison Touch” or “Gluttony.”

That about sums up today’s trailer! Which of the new Pokémon is your favorite?

DesignerCon hits the Pasadena Convention Center in Pasadena, California, on November 19th and 20th. This is no doubt one of the highlights of any designer toy fan’s calendar (it certainly is for me). Tons of artists representing all sorts of mediums from art prints to figures to plushes and just about everything in between will be in attendance.

This is a more intimate convention when compared to those like San Diego Comic Con. Yes, the venue is smaller. But more than that, there is a sense of community housed within. I would say nearly every artist there knows each other. It really feels more like a family gathering. The majority of the goods for sale are handmade and each  booth has their own feel. It is truly unlike any other event I have ever attended.

You can check out the list of vendors here. Those who frequent Geekscape will note some familiar faces: Martin Hsu, Kiki Doodle, BeeFy & Co., and Camilla d’Errico. There will also be event-exclusives. Only one has been announced so far but keep checking back; there usually are plenty.

Tickets are on sale now and there are several options to choose from.  There is a one-day pass for $10, a weekend pass good for both days that costs $15, and a VIP pass that includes the weekend pass along with entry to special panels during the day as well as a Saturday night party.

Are you planning on attending DesignerCon?

Loot Crate‘s Loot Anime subscription box line, created in partnership with Crunchyroll, is celebrating those that are more than human with September’s Crate. The theme is “Demi-Human” and looking at recent anime, there is a wealth of series to choose from. And as an added bonus, every item included is exclusive to Loot Anime.

The Bleach watch is the most impressive item in this shipment. Its quality was superb and it looks like a lot of care was put into designing it. The watch face uses the kanji for 3, 6, 9, and 12 instead of the actual numbers. Another cool detail was Ichigo’s Zangetsu sword replacing one of the watch’s hands.

lootanime-oct16-shirt lootanime-oct16-shirt-zoom

Twin Star Exorcists‘ heroes, Rokuro Enmado and Benio Adashino, are the stars of a super-soft shirt. The print reminds me of the ones from shirts sold at anime conventions in the early 2000’s.

The final item is a standee keychain set from Tokyo Ghoul. The two characters included are Ken Kaneki and Touka Kirishima, drawn in a chibi style. The art is printed on some kind of hard plastic. Unfortunately, it is only on one-side. It is still nice and all but it would have been so much cooler if it had both front and back artwork.

lootanime-oct16-box-diorama

Those standees can be used to create a little diorama using the inside of the box. Unlike August’s Crate, there was no assembly recquired to bring out this box’s extra feature.

Loot Anime’s “Demi-Human” Crate is a winner in my eyes. Like last month, every item appears to be thoughtfully chosen. I was also pleased that all of the included items were some degree of an exclusive item.

If this unboxing has you interested in subscribing, you can get some money off of your first Crate either by following this link or entering “Geekscape” into the promo code area upon checkout.

I don’t know about you but I sometimes miss notifications on my phone. A good amount of the time, I miss hearing that little ding sound. In theory, I could just change the notification sound (and I have, trust me) but it would definitely be cooler to have a fluffy toy/gadget alert me to updates with witty banter.

And that is where KiQ comes in. A Kickstarter launched this morning for the wise-cracking feline and over 10 percent of the goal has already been pledged! Here is how the little firecracker works:

KiQ description

Using its own smartphone app, owners can control the frequency and volume of KiQ’s joke/alerts and tailor what kind of humor they want their new buddy to spout. KiQ’s comedic repertoire is updated weekly so you won’t have to hear the same jokes over and over again.

At launch, KiQ’s function centers around social messages, like texts and Facebook updates. But in the future, the critter will be able to be your desk speaker, find your phone, help with smart home devices (I am assuming like Nest and Hue), and perform other nifty features.

unspecified-2

If you want to get your own little kitty, you will need to pledge $69 (there some limited early bird specials as well), which is a steal considering the six-inch tall toy is expected to retail around $99. I should mention that $69 tiers only allow you to choose between the Siamese and Dark Gray breeds. The Red and Peach ones are exclusive to the Kickstarter campaign and cost $280 each.

You can check out the Kickstarter campaign here. You can pledge until Thursday, November 3 at 7:41 AM Pacific Daylight Time.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past is a long game. I mean, a really long game. Thankfully, the title is worth the commitment. As one would expect from a remake of a Super Famicom RPG, Dragon Quest VII rocks it old school-style. We are talking level grinding, a huge world map, and lots and lots of turn-based battles.
n3ds_dragonquestvii_screen_12

I say “huge world map” but in the start of the game, the world is limited to a single island in a vast sea. As you continue on your sojourn back and forth through time, additional islands appear. The towns and dungeons housed on these islands are varied in theme and not a single one felt bland, visually at least. The game did however seem recycle the same several music tracks for towns and castles. For goodness’ sakes, there was a Middle Eastern-themed town that had the same music as the French village. It was disappointing when there was such a great opportunity for regional music variations.

n3ds_dragonquestvii_screen_05

n3ds_dq7_screen_01_bmp_jpgcopy

Battles in the game are not random, thankfully. Monsters are visible on the map and making contact with one will trigger a battle. I will say there have been many instances of monsters popping up where my character is standing, which was a bit of a surprise.

n3ds_dq7_screen_08_bmp_jpgcopy

Thanks to the Vocation system, in which you gain access to abilities and additional jobs through the completion of battles, I found myself  actually seeking out monsters to fight in hopes of increasing my mastery of a vocation. I loved that each vocation changed how your character looked, too. It was a small touch but added to the fun. Finding a mix of vocations for your party that fits your immediate needs may take some tweaking but it is a rewarding experience.

n3ds_dq7_screen_04_bmp_jpgcopy

3ds_dq7_janrpg_scrn_06w

The vehicle for your party’s previously-mentioned time travel are tablet pieces scattered across the world (hence the “Fragments of the Forgotten Past” subtitle) that when reassembled in the Shrine of Mysteries add a link to an undiscovered island’s past. Finding them isn’t hard for the most part, thanks to the a special Fragment Finder gifted to the main character that lights up the upper-left corner of the bottom Nintendo 3Ds screen when one is nearby. The closer your character is, the more rapidly it blinks.

One thing I was disappointed in was how long it took to unlock the much-advertised Monster Meadows feature of the game. You have access to the main hub area relatively early but it doesn’t begin to function until much, much later. I am talking about 40-plus hours into the game. It was frustrating that a feature so hyped on the game’s promo site remained unavailable for such a long stretch of time.

You do get the chance to experience one of the benefits of Monster Meadows, the Travelers’ Tablets, through the Download Bar at the Haven (available relatively early on) and by finding reformed monsters in towns you have visited. The Tablets received from the reformed monsters are on par difficulty-wise with the level of monster you currently face in the story. Nintendo’s DLC Tablets at the Download Bar, however, are substantially more difficult. I wouldn’t even bother with them until after you have access to the Vocation system.

In terms of Dragon Quest VII‘s level of difficulty, I would rank it on par with the majority of RPGs coming out these days. There are some trying battles that will require taking some time to level-up before challenging but on the whole, I didn’t find it too taxing. The only stressor was needing to find save points. For a portable game with long dungeon segments, there really should be a “save-anywhere” feature. You can, in theory, suspend your data temporarily with a “quick save” but the game limits the areas where you can perform that action.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past for the Nintendo 3DS gets a 4 put of 5. If you have the time to invest in the title, you will find a rich story with plenty to offer. Just don’t expect all the features to be available right away.

Thanks to our friends over at Loot Crate, we have another exciting unboxing for you all! This round is the September 2016 shipment for their Loot Wear line. The theme this month is “Gotta Go Fast” and features clothing themed to characters who are all about speed and moving!

lootwear-oct16-sonic-socks

The Sonic the Hedgehog socks were far and away my favorite item from this month. The tag says that they are exclusive to the subscription service. The socks feature an all-around print with the Blue Blur and some gold rings. Wear them to make your slower friends jealous!

lootwear-oct16-deadpool-socks

There were also some Deadpool athletic socks included. But when you think of Deadpool… do you think of speed? Well, maybe the speed at which he swings those swords and throws out snappy one-liners!

lootwear-oct16-mario-kart-shirt lootwear-oct16-mario-kart-shirt-zoom

Subscribers also received a Mario Kart shirt (who doesn’t dread that blue shell?), another Loot Wear-exclusvie. The fabric was in the distressed-style with some parts thinner than the others. A pretty awesome reminder that no matter where you are on the track, you can always catch up!

lootwear-oct16-transformers-jerseylootwear-oct16-transformers-jersey-zoom

This shipment included two Transformers items, the first of which being an Autobots soccer jersey. The polyester fabric had some give to it but I didn’t terribly like the texture overall. It felt a little slick and unlike what I am used to in terms of clothing but that is just my opinion. The jersey featured a large patch of the Autobots emblem… just in case there was a question as to who you were “rolling out” with!

lootwear-oct16-transformers-shorts lootwear-oct16-transformers-shorts-zoom

The second Transformers piece was a pair of what appear to be work-out shorts with a print of the character, Arcee, on one side. The shorts were made of a soft jersey.

I was a little underwhelmed by this shipment, personally. I think one of the problems was my lack of interest in several of the franchises included, specifically Deadpool and Transformers. And while I did love the Sonic crew socks, I can’t think of a time that I would wear them. Perhaps the largest issue was that the majority of the items included seemed to be made with men in mind. There actually is a more women-oriented Loot Wear subscription, “Loot for Her,” which I think would have suited me better.

If this unboxing has you interested in subscribing, you can get some money off of your first Crate either by following this link or entering “Geekscape” into the promo code area upon checkout! If speed is your thing, this Loot Wear crate might still be available so head on over!

As befitting the month of All Hallow’s Eve, Disney Studios gifts fans with not only an unsettling teaser trailer for their upcoming film, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, but a glimpse of a movie poster as well!

https://youtu.be/1xo3af_6_Jk

The trailer is a tad more than a minute and a half but does an excellent job of, well, showing a bunch of ghostly pirates killing soldiers. Pretty dark stuff. The infamous pirate Captain Jack Sparrow also appears to play a key part in the film.

Pirates of The Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales poster

And here is the movie’s teaser poster! The skull and crossbones definitely looks more ornate than in previous films. Check out that gemstone in the tooth. As we can see from the poster, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is set hit theaters sometime in 2017.

What did you think of the trailer? Do you plan on seeing the film? Let us know in the comments!

Included are three flame effects pieces and two facial expressions (standard and combat). Nendoroids are able to be posed in several positions allowing the figure to recreate fun battle scenes. Who wouldn’t want to see Kyo face off against a Beanie Baby? Be honest.

Nendoroid Kyo Kusanagi: CLASSIC Ver. is currently available to pre-order on The Good Smile Company Online Shop for ¥4,500. The figure is scheduled to release in March 2017.

Kyo isn’t the only KOF character getting the Nendoroid treatment. An image of Nendoroid Mai Shiranui was also revealed!

It may still be a few days from October but that hasn’t stopped the early launch of seasonal merchandise. Disney does it. Trader Joe’s does it. And it turns out, so does Pokémon Center. Their batch of Halloween-flavored goodness is called “The Halloween Circus Collection.” The collection consists of pins, plushes, and keychains themed to a Gothic circus exhibition. Mostly what that translates into are a bunch of adorable Pokémon dressed in even cuter outfits.

Here are some of the highlights:
p2914_701-00100_01 Pikachu Halloween Circus Poké Plush ($17.99)

It isn’t a party without Pikachu and the little guy is decked out in a Chandelure- themed Jester costume. Its hood is removable (nice touch). The plush stands eight and a half inches tall. If that size is a tad too big for you, there is the plush keychain option as well.

p2300_710-01676_01

Gengar, Duskull, Golbat, and Mismagius Costume Pikachu Pin Set ($28.99)

Pikachu shows his spooky side with this four-piece pin set. I am in love with the Duskull pin in particular. You may recognize the Golbat  one from last year’s merchandise.

p2914_701-00105_01

Drifloon Halloween Circus Plush Keychain ($9.99)

This plush keychain is my favorite out of the entire collection. Just look at the little guy’s face, with the glaring eyes and all! Also there is just something about a Drifloon wearing a Zubat hat that I find innately endearing. The keychain isn’t that big (four inches long) but than again, neither is the price tag.

p2914_701-00099_01

Pikachu Pumpkin Card Case ($14.99)

For those of us who use bus passes or any other form of transportation documentation, card cases like this one are quite handy. With a retractable cord attached to its metal clip, your ticket/pass can stay within the security of the case while being tapped. And unlike last year’s Joltik card case, this one also features a small zippered compartment for cash. If you really dig the whole Pikachu-as-a-pumpkin thing, I would also recommend you check out the plush hatplush keychain, and Poké Plush featuring the same design.

What were your favorite items from the collection? Let us know in the comments!

In the recent Pokémon Sun and Moon trailer, fans were treated to four new Pokémon along with a deluge of information on the games’ features. Let’s take a look at that trailer first:

Wow! That is a ton of stuff packed in those three and a half minutes, right? We’ll start with the Pokémon that starred in the video.

passimian

First off is Passimian, a Fighting-type. It has the never-before-seen Ability “Receiver,” which allows this Pokémon to inherit the Ability of a teammate who has fainted on the battlefield. Passimian is exclusive to Pokémon Sun.

oranguru

For those playing Pokémon Moon, you can find Oranguru, an Normal/Pyshic-type. It can have either the Ability “Inner Focus” or “Telepathy.” Oranguru is the only Pokémon who can learn the move “Instruct,” which makes its target to use its most recent move immediately.

lycanroc_midday_formlycanroc_midnight_form

Next we have the evolution of Rockruff, Lycanroc. There is a Midday Form (first image) and a Midnight Form (second image). It was previously thought that which form you received was dependent on what time of day the Pokémon evolved but each one is actually exclusive to a specific version of the game. Midday Form comes from Sun and Midnight Form is for Moon.

Let’s move on to the new features you can expect in the games. First, there is Pokémon Refresh, a leveled-up version of Pokémon-Amié. In this version, players will be able to cure paralysis and poison within mini-games along with the original bonding mechanic from the previous games.

Character customization akin to that found in Pokémon X and Y makes a comeback. Players will be able to change their hairstyle, hair color, and eye color. There is also the ability to change apparel and dye its colors as well.

Pokemon Bank changes

Starting January 2017, both Pokémon Bank and Pokémon Transporter will receive software updates to add compatibility for Sun and Moon as well as Virtual Console versions of RedBlue, and Yellow. It should be noted that once transported from Pokémon Bank to Sun or Moon, they cannot be transferred back to Omega RubyAlpha SapphireX, or Y. There is also the whole yearly fee for Pokémon Bank usage thing.

Pokemon Bank Pokedex

The January 2017 updates will also bring a new feature to Pokémon Bank: The National Pokédex. The application will read your saved data on SunMoonOmega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, X, and and add information on the Pokémon you have caught. Pretty spiffy, right?

Sailor Moon fans are not exclusive to Japan so it makes sense for the Official Sailor Moon Fan Club to open its doors to those overseas as well. The Club launched in July 2016 to celebrate Sailor Moon’s 20th anniversary (which actually happened in 2012 but forget about that detail). Here are the countries that are able to participate in the club:

Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Puerto Rico, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States, Vietnam

Registration opens on September 23 but you can sign up for email updates here. The membership fee for the year of 2016 through 2017 (ending on June 30, 2017) is $58 (in United States currency, I believe). Registration will run from September 23 to October 22.

If you are anywhere in the vicinity of Nintendo NY (formerly Nintendo World) in New York’s Rockefeller Center on October 7, I would totally head on over for a grand shindig to honor release of VIZ Media’s Super Mario Adventures.

The book is a compilation of manga, written by Kentaro Takekuma and illustrated by Charlie Nozawa, that ran in issues of Nintendo Power from 1992 to 1993. As one would expect, the story follows Mario and Luigi and their adventures to rescue Princess Toadstool and thwart Bowser. The entire series is contained within the single full-color volume. Super Mario Adventures will retail for $14.99.

SuperMarioAdventurescover

At the Nintendo NY event, party-goers can expect themed cupcakes, photo-ops with Mario and Luigi, plus an autograph/ Question and Answer session with surprise VIZ Media guests. Attendees who purchase Super Mario Adventures at the event will also receive an exclusive poster (while supplies last). The release party takes place on Friday, October 7 from 6PM to 8PM.

Are you planning on attending? Let us know in the comments!

It wasn’t so long ago that we viewed the latest trailer for Pokémon Sun and Moon and were introduced to the Ultra Beasts, in particular UB-01. Twitter went nuts over theories as to the creature’s origin. In the interest of keeping things potentially spoiler-free, these hypotheses will not be repeated here. But I will say that UB-01 is in some pretty interesting company.corocoro-ultrabeasts

Thanks to magazine scans from CoroCoro magazine, we have our first look at UB-02 Beauty and UB-02 Expansion. Why they both bear the title “UB-02” remains unknown. The magazine article mentions the UB-01’s name is a mystery but will have a deep meaning within the game.

corocoro-rugaruganday corocoro-rugarugannight

The new Ultra Beasts weren’t the only reveal in this issue of CoroCoro. Remember Rockruff? It’s next evolutionary stage was also unveiled. Like Eevee’s Umbreon and Espeon, Rockruff’s next form will be different depending on what time it evolves. Evolve it during daylight hours and you get Rugarugan – Midday form (Japanese name). If the evolution occurs at night, you’ll end up with Rugarugan – Midnight form (again, Japanese name). No word on if what the types of these two forms are.

What do you think of these reveals?

The original Sailor Moon anime series was my all-time favorite anime. But as much as I loved it, I wish that it followed the manga more closely. That wish has come true with the creation of Sailor Moon Crystal, a Sailor Moon remake whose storyline is more true to that of Naoko Takeuchi’s classic manga. Viz Media recently released Set 1 of the series in the North America.

smc_ep09_hulu

Rather than following the original anime’s “monster-a-day” formula, Crystal is more streamlined. It covers the entire Dark Kingdom story  arc in 14 episodes, which I felt was sufficient to tell the tale without dragging on. Another positive change was the somewhat more serious tone of the show. There are still plenty of light-hearted moments but Sailor Moon’s reaction to Tuxedo Mask’s brainwashing in later episodes definitely is less glossed over. And like the manga, the climax of that plot point is dramatically different than what was in the original anime.

For my part, I loved these changes. Crystal was created to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Sailor Moon. It felt like the show was maturing with its audience.

smc_ep12_hulu

I was very impressed with the voice acting in both the Japanese and English versions. It was so awesome that they got the original voice of Sailor Moon, Kotono Mitsuishi, to reprise her role in Crystal! She added an extra layer of nostalgia to the show and honestly, I had a hard time picturing someone else voicing her. On the whole, I didn’t have any issue listening either language track. No cringe-worthy acting here.

smc_ep03_hulu

I know that many viewers took issue with the Sailor Senshi’s transformation sequences being computer-generated. I will admit that it was a little jarring the first few times but after about four episodes, you stop noticing so much. I just wrote it off to myself as the artists trying to make their transformations more “separate from regular space” (I have no clue if that is the real reason).

smc_ep06_hulu_v2

I had no problem with the general art style of the show (again, plenty of viewers did). Is it different? Yes. Is it visually unpleasant? Hell no. If you approach it with an open mind, I genuinely think you will agree that it is just fine.

smc_ep10_hulu

I bestow unto Set 1 of Sailor Moon Crystal 5 out of 5. I loved the hell out of this show. I didn’t know if it would live up to my expectations, the bar was set pretty high, but it beat out the original anime as my favorite anime of all-time. Any Sailor Moon fan owes it to themselves to check this series out.

The adorable Wii U platformer, Yoshi’s Woolly World is heading to the Nintendo 3DS next year under the title, Poochy and Yoshi’s Woolly World. As one would expect from the name change, this is no mere port. Beyond containing every level from the original, your canine pal, Poochy, is getting levels of his own. The goal of his stages is to acquire as many beads as possible within the area through timed jumps.
poochygameplaypoochypups

But, that is not all. Poochy is joined by Poochy Pups, who sniff out hidden treasure for Yoshi when summoned. Can this game get any cuter?

poochy amiibo

Why, yes it can! Releasing alongside the game is a Poochy amiibo. Like the Yarn Yoshi and Mega Yarn Yoshi amiibo, this little guy is made of yarn, stuffing, and other plush toy materials. No word yet on what this amiibo will do in the game.

Also included in the game are 30 stop-motion animation shorts, made in collaboration with the Japanese studio, Dwarf.

Poochy and Yoshi’s Woolly World releases in North America on February 3. Beyond the standard edition, there will also be a bundle containing the game and Poochy amiibo.
