Another hot and ready announcement to come out of Gamescom this morning is the reveal of a brand new Metal Gear game by Konami!

No, it’s not a Pachinko or mobile game either, but a real console Metal Gear game! Let’s check it out shall we? (Wow Golly this sure is exciting. Obviously nothing can go wrong.)

Z………..Zombie game? I-it’s just a zombie game? Oh, ok. I-it’s not like I wanted an actual Metal Gear game with an original story or anything. I mean, obviously this is the right move. Online multiplayer survival games are all the rage right now. Just take a look at the amazing success and critical/user darling that is Resident Evil: Umbrella Corp.

Did someone say that they wanted a new Yooka Laylee trailer? No? Well, you’re getting one anyway.

If you’re in Germany this week odds are you’re there for Gamescom, or you just live there. No matter the reason, Playtonic Games has decided to celebrate this by releasing a new trailer for Yooka Laylee. The new trailer below features a new minecart level as well as a new snow plow transformation and even a brand new area which looks to BEE Capital B’s Lair, Hivory Towers. The game is still scheduled for Q1 2017 for Xbox One, PS4, PC, and Wii U. Comment below and tell us what you thought of the trailer!

Looks like the Detective Pikachu film has their writers on board!

Announced about a month ago, Legendary Pictures had secured the rights to a Detective Pikachu movie based off the upcoming Nintendo 3DS game, but nothing else has been revealed since then. Now, in an exclusive article for Variety, Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch as well as Thor and Guardians of the Galaxy writer Nicole Perlman. The film still has not concrete release date or window, but this was a nice announcement to let Pokemon fans know that the film is currently in good hands.

What do you think about the choice of writers? Do you think they made a good decision? Make sure to tell us in the comments below!

When it comes to Kickstarter projects, animation is always a tricky beast to tackle. Due to high production costs and the fact that animation for a show can take anywhere from 6+ months to produce, animated projects are usually very expensive and risky. This however, doesn’t seem to be the case for Long Gone Gulch.

LGG Snag Rawhide

Created by Tara Billinger and Zach Bellissimo, Long Gone Gulch centers around the sheriffs Snag and Rawhide  as they try to keep peace and order throughout the Gulch which houses many different creatures from various myths and folklore. This show has been a personal dream for the duo for a while now, and they’re not about to give up on it.

Long Gone Gulch Characters

If you’re worried about the talent and money going into it because you’ve been burnt on some crowdfunding before, then don’t! As explained in their pitch video, all the money the project makes will be going into paying the always talented animators, artists, voice actors, and musicians. Zach and Tara also have a good amount of experience in the industry. Tara currently works at Disney and helps on Paul Ruddish’s awesome Mickey Mouse shorts, while Zach currently works at Warner Bros. on Teen Titans Go!, and was even a character designer for the first season of Rick and Morty!

Gonnorhea Monster

The campaign goal for the pilot is $25,000, which is actually very reasonable for a pilot. The best part is that the kickstarter launch has been great as the project is close to 90% complete with a little around 14 days still left to go at the time of this article. If you would like to help contribute to the pilot yourself then check it out below! Also, if you’re interested in more of Zach and Tara’s work, then check out their tumblrs (including the one for the show.)

While it was overshadowed Friday night by other big events like the Sonic 25th Anniversary party, The Nick hosted Women in Animation Panel at Comic Con was easily one of the biggest highlights of the connvention.

Hosted by Nick and Moderated by Variety’s Laura Prudom, this panel featured an amazing panel of women including Lauren Faust (MLP:FIM, Super Best Friends Forever) Mary Harrington (Ren & Stimpy, Rocko’s Modern Life), Vanessa Coffey (Rugrats, Doug), Rikke Asbjoern (Pinky Malinky), Margaret Dean (Women in Animation), and Maija Burnett (CalArts). During the panel, these women brought some great insight into the world of animation and their struggles, and I’m here to give you an abridged version of it.

WIA Panelists

The panel started with a quick introduction of all the panelists and then proceeded to talk about how different the animation field was when they entered the business. They talked about how most shows were being made to just sell products or were aimed towards only a specific gender or demographic. They talked about the struggle to get original cartoons made and how Nick helped usher in the creator driven era in animation where shows were no longer about selling a product or catering to a specific age or gender, but instead telling fun stories that both kid and adults can appreciate.

WIA Panel 2

Next, they moved on to talk a bit about Lauren Faust and her experiences with the industry. She talked about how her first job outside of school was getting the amazing opportunity to animate for films like Cats Don’t Dance and The Iron Giant. She also touched on other subjects like when she tried pitching her possible toy line Milky Way and the Galaxy Girls, but was instead rejected by Hasbro in favor of the offer to help them reboot and breathe new life into the My Little Pony franchise. In the end she ended up accepting the job, and the rest is just about history as the MLP brand is one of the companies biggest staples now because of Faust and her crew.

WIA Panel 3

After that, they went to talk about upcoming and aspiring animators that they try to help every day. They mentioned how great it is that a lot of women are finally getting their chance to have their own shows made and how positive the reception to them has been. Steven Universe and Star Vs. the Forces of Evil were some examples of how positive reception to female creator driven shows have been. They then showed off a short animation by that Rikke Asbjoern helped with called My Friend Pancake. The short centered around a young girl who was friends with a giant cat that seems to be a bit timid. It was a funny and cute short that showed off the talents of upcoming female animators.

Finally, Rikke talked a bit about one of Nick’s upcoming new shows, Pinky Malinky. She talked about how she’s had the idea for this show forever and that as she continued to grow and learn about animation, so did Pinky. She seemed very excited to finally be able to talk and show people the show. They then showed us a couple of small clips of the show as well as some stills. After that, they ended the panel by telling people to help them with a cause called Women in Animation 50/50 which is an initiative to get women animation creatives up from 20% to 50% by the year 2025. If you’d like to help with this cause, check it out right here!

WIA Panel 5

WIA Panel 6

In the end, I can’t say enough good things about this panel. It’s a real shame if you weren’t able to attend the panel if you were at the convention, but hopefully my abridged recap of it helped convince you. Did you enjoy the write-up? Tell me in the comments below!

WIA Panel 1

ReCore has been a mysterious game. Ever since it’s initial trailer over a year ago, many people have been scratching their heads wondering just what kind of game this is. It seemed to just come out of nowhere with big names like Keji Inafune and Armature Games, a studio comprised of former Retro Studios employees.

I got the chance to try the game out during Comic Con, and aside from some of the technical problems, ReCore feels more like a Mega Man game than Mighty No.9 does (which is weird seeing as how Inafune worked on both projects.). The game feels like a great balance between classic Mega Man and Metroid Prime. What about it makes it fun though?

Recore CastGameplay in ReCore is split into 2 sections, platforming and combat. Both styles are fun, but the platforming sections in the game were very well done. Most of the platforming will have you jumping from platform to platform in order to open doors, flip switches, or complete puzzles. Movement feels very nice, especially the jumping since you can double jump and then transition into a dash hover. While easy, this makes most of the platforming fast and fun.

Recore Dash

Puzzles are also really well implemented. While only a handful in the demo, most of the puzzles centered around using one of your robot companions, a spider named Seth. With him, you can grapple onto slopes and platforms that you normally couldn’t. While he does move automatically, it feels really satisfying when you’re able to pull off one continuously long grapple move. This is only one of the different ways that your robot allies can be used (more on that in a bit.).

Recore Seth

Let’s talk a bit about combat. This is where the similarities to Mega Man come into play. In the demo, there were 3 different kinds of enemies and 4 different bullets. The plain bullets feel a bit un-necessary most of the time since they did the weakest amount of damage. The main reason for this is because most of the enemies are color coded which means  that they’ll take more damage if hit with the correct colored bullet.

While it does sound a bit tedious,  switching bullets is instantaneous with the help of the D-pad. You can also charge up a shot by holding a fire button which is what you’ll probably want to use most of the time since that does the most damage, but you will have to wait for the ammo bar to recharge afterwards.

ReCore Combat

The other part of Combat is also taking advantage of your robot allies. The demo contains 2 of the allies, Mack the Dog, and Seth the Spider. Only one can be summoned at a time, but you can command them to attack and retreat whenever you want, so if you’re a strategic type of person when it comes to combat, then you’ll have plenty of fun with this game.

Now for all the good that the game has, there are some things that concern me. While the combat system right now is fine, it could really use some tweaking as it still feels a bit stiff. Perhaps a dodge roll would help the combat flow better. The game also seemed to have some pretty bad frame rate issues throughout the demo. They didn’t happen all the time, but they were often enough to be a problem. This mostly concerns me seeing as how the games release is a little over a month away, so hopefully they fix it up by then.

ReCore GameplayIn the end, ReCore is a very compelling game with some great ideas, but is hampered by some pretty inconsistent performance issues that could really bring down the whole experience if not fixed. What Inafune and Armature have here really is something special, and I can’t wait to try out the rest of it. ReCore will release on September 13th for Xbox One and Windows 10.

Comic con may have ended almost a month ago already, but that won’t stop us here on the site from posting more about it!

While attending preview night, I had the pleasure of getting to try out Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 which had been announced earlier that same day. For those not in the know, Pac-Man Championship Edition was a very popular downloadable title for XBLA, PSN, and Steam back in 2007. it became so popular and well known that the game even received an upgraded version 3 year later with Championship Edition DX which added more mazes, ghosts, modes, and more!

PM CE DX

From what I got to play so far, I can easily say that Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 has added and changed up so much stuff, but yet, still feels just as fun and familiar as it did 6 years ago. The gameplay is simple, traverse through a maze for about 5 minutes trying to eat as many pellets, fruit, and ghosts as you can. In the demo I played they introduced a brand new mechanic to the game, bounce pads.

Pac-man CE 2 Bounce

While it may seem a bit of a small addition on the outside, these bounce pads really change up the game. Running onto one will propel Pac-Man in an arc to a corresponding bounce pad. In fact, a lot of the pellet trails will have you weaving in and out of the bounce pads as you flawlessly dodge ghosts. Speaking of ghosts, they’ve gotten quite the change.

Now, the main ghosts still act as they do. You hit them you die, but, the surrounding ghosts have changed quite a bit. The secondary/side ghosts are now a bit more transparent and actually don’t kill you. Instead, they’ll attach themselves to the main ghosts and follow you from there. You can also bump into the ghost line to make the ghost bigger. There are also some really cool instances this time around where if you eat a long ghost trail after getting a power pellet, the game will show a dynamic camera angle of Pac-Man absolutely destroying the ghosts, and it’s just as satisfying as it sounds.

Pman CE 2 ghost trailOverall, from what little time I had with it, I was very impressed by how much similar, but different Championship Edition 2 really is. The best part is that the release of the game is only about a month away! The game will launch in the U.S on September 13th 2016 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. Were you able to try out the game at Comic Con? What are your thoughts? Tell us in the comments below!

This year during Comic Con, I had the honor of getting to sit down with composer Bear McCreary. Bear has composed for many different genres and shows from The Walking Dead, Battlestar Galactica, Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, and even the upcoming God of War for PS4. In the interview, we talk a bit about getting to compose the new God of War, how he got the gig composing the Angry Video Game Nerd Movie, and more! Check out the interview below!

As mentioned earlier today in my interview with him, Pat Contri (Pat the NES Punk) hosted his first ever comic con panel this year, and he even brought some guests along.

The panel consisted of Pat himself, His friend Ian Ferguson, James Rolfe (Angry Video Game Nerd), Andre Meadows (Black Nerd Comedy), and Pixel Dan. Overall, a nice well rounded group of people to give an abridged version, but fun take on the history of video games. They even had a great turnout as they completely packed the room and even had to turn away some people (whoa!, that’s crazy).

20160724_150817

The start of the panel didn’t necessarily start where most people expected it to. While most VG history articles, videos, etc usually like starting around the Atari era, Pat & co. decided to take a different approach and start at the very VERY  beginning of games. They talked about how Ralph Baer (may he rest in peace) and how he is one of the most important and commonly overlooked influencer who helped get games where they are today. They also touched upon the creation of Pong, the rise of the pong consoles, and of course the age of Atari. They even had a really fun video that talked all about the fall of Atari and the infamous video game crash of 1983.

Next, they went on to talk about the Nintendo age and how they single handedly saved the market in the U.S from becoming completely dead and obsolete. After that, they went on to talk about the console wars and their own personal experiences growing up with either Nintendo or Sega, and how people around them acted. Then they talked a bit about the mid to late 90’s with the introduction of the PlayStation , rise of PC gaming, and how it was to see Atari and Sega finally drop out of the console war.

20160724_153158

Finally, they talked about the present day and the rise of retro games and nostalgia. They talked about how surreal it was to see something like the NES Mini coming out and how a lot of indie games like Shovel Knight are very much inspired by the developers having that nostalgia for playing those kinds of games when they were younger. After that they took a quick Q&A, and just like that, the panel was over. GAME OVER (I’m so sorry, please forgive me.) There was this really cool guy that came dressed up as a Tiger Electronic though.

Man, I really need to get a better phone. These photos are pretty blurry.

What do you think of the panel? Where you there for it? Did you enjoy it? Tell us in the comments below!

On the last day of Comic Con, I had the chance to attend a history of retro video games panel (more on that later.) The main host of the panel was Pat Contri, A retro game collector and reviewer on YouTube who usually goes by the online name Pat the NES Punk. I had the opportunity to quickly talk with Pat about his panel, his new NES guide book coming out, and more. Check it Out!

Aside from being a bit quiet on the animation end of things, Bee and Puppycat has a lot on its PLATE (sorry I couldn’t resist.)

From comic books, and other pieces of countless merch, the show has worked its way into peoples hearts, and now it can work its way into your stomach! Today marks the official release of Viz Media’s Easy Eats: A Bee and Puppycat Cookbook! While SDCC attendees were able to get their hands on the delicious recipe book about 2 weeks in advance, the book has now launched and is available to everyone. If you’re a fan of the series and would like to pick up a copy of your own, you can pick it up from Amazon or your local Barnes & Noble . You can also find a couple more links over on Viz’s official site.  Usually a copy of the book would retail for $16.95 USD, but for a limited time you can pick it up from the above mentioned sites for about 30% off! (that’s about $12.13 – $12.37.) The book features many popular and easy to prepare recipes straight from the show itself.

Are you a fan of Bee and Puppycat? Are you planning on picking this book up? Tell us in the comments if you’re planning to, and if you already own it, are you enjoying it?

Earlier today we told you about Rare’s Sea of Thieves panel at Comic-Con and how they are just as pumped about releasing the game as much as people are excited to play it. After the panel, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Executive Producer Joe Neate to talk about the game, community, and much more. Give it a listen!

Last week Rare arrived to Comic Con in style, and while they didn’t bring a demo of their highly anticipated pirate adventure Sea of Thieves, they brought plenty of other great stuff. One of these being the Sea of Thieves: Art of Adventure panel. Executive Producer Joe Neate hosted the panel along with Peter Hentze, Adam Park, and Ryan Stevenson, all of which had some excellent pirate names.

SOT panel 1

The presentation began pretty simple. Rare talked about their history about their love for pirates and how they reference them in almost every game that they’ve made. They also talked bout how excited they were to finally be working on SOT as it’s their dream game they’ve always wanted to make.

SOT panel 2

After that, they let art director Ryan Stevenson take the wheel as he began to talk about the art style of the game and the decisions they made with it. One of them is that they wanted to have an art style that looks good, but can also be easily be distinguished. One of the examples given was that a certain screenshot from the game was blurred out, but still just as easily recognized as the clear version of it. This was referred to as separation through color and tone.

SOT panel 4They then moved on to talk about how important detail is and how everything in the game has a story. One of the biggest things they went for was making it so that nothing looked new or polished. They wanted everything to look used. This method was what they described as the wonky method. They then gave a couple of examples like how if you look at the ship’s floorboards they’ll appear uneven, creaky, and even broken. This help gives the feeling that everything you encounter in the game is pre existing and has a long backstory to it.

SOT panel 5Next, they went on to show just how much detail they want to put on their character models. They went on to talk about how they start off with a simple base model for their characters and gradually add more detail as the designs progress. They also gave us a quick peek at mer people. They showed off a quick merman model who gradually got more and more disfigured and morphed. Could it be possible that you’ll be able to turn into these creatures? Only time will tell.

SOT panel 7

SOT panel 8

SOT panel 9One of the last things  the team showed was ship customization. In the final game, there’ll be tons of boats of plenty of shapes and sizes. Not only that, but most things, even down to the crest plate of the ship can be changed. as an example, they showed off a couple  of crests that referenced Joanna Dark, and a certain beloved duo consisting of a bear and bird.

SOT panel 6Finally, the panel concluded when the team gave everyone a free figurine of a character known simply as the Pirate Lord, the coolest part being that it can also glow in the dark. Why can it glow in the dark you ask? BECAUSE HE’S A GHOOOOOOOST! That’s right!, Rare revealed that there will indeed be ghost pirates in the game, but in what form is still to be seen.

SOT panel 3All in all, it was a great panel full of un and surprises, and while Sea of Thieves still doesn’t have a release date, I’m more hype for this game than ever before. Sea of Thieves currently has no release date, but is planning a closed beta for Xbox One sometime in the future. Stay tuned to geekscape.net for more info and even an interview with Executive Producer Joe Neate!

Tonight was the night of the Sonic 25th Anniversary Party, and things didn’t go quite as expected. Most of the party was plagued by terrible audio and visual problems that were quite embarrassing.

First up was the announcement Sonic Mania, a brand new 2D game featuring popular indie dev & fan Christian Whitehead as one of the main programmers. The game will have Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles playable, as well as introducing new zones, old favorites, and much more. Check out the announce trailer here!

That wasn’t all though, as Sega had one last surprise for the hedgehogs fans. As a final announcement, they confirmed that a brand new 3D installment has also been in development. In the next 3 years Pixar will release 4 new movies, but only 1 of them will be an original film, Coco, slated for release on November 22nd, 2017. But even before that we’ll be getting Cars 3 on June 16th, 2017. After that, Toy Story 4 will release on June 15th 2018, and then The Incredibles 2 will follow on June 21st, 2019. While Coco and The Incredibles 2 seem like exciting ventures, Cars 3 and especially Toy Story 4 seem to wear on peoples patience with the company. It’s also sparked mass debate about whether Pixar should be doing so many sequels when the quality of them has been pretty split among them.

Fear not though! In a recent interview with  Entertainment Weekly, Pixar president Jim Morris has stated that the company will be heavily focusing on original content after Toy Story and Incredibles as they’d rather start creating new stories rather than build upon their current franchises. Are you excited for Pixars shift back to original content, or are there still some sequels you want to see from them? Tell us in the comments below!

Disney just hosted their first Facebook live event, and while there was a graphical hiccup or 2, their announcement was pretty damn cool.

Director Rich Moore took to the stage with Wreck It Ralph co director Phil Johnston and John C. Reilly  himself to announce that Wreck It Ralph 2 is officially happening (even though Reilly accidentally announced it a couple of times.) and that the film will be releasing on March 9th, 2018, which really isn’t that far away. You can watch the full video right here on their Facebook page if you’re interested. Are you excited for the sequel? Tell us below in the comments!

Earlier this morning, Disney Animation teased fans with a special surprise.

The company took to all of their social media accounts to announce that they’ll have breaking news about their animation studio tomorrow morning at 9AM PST on Facebook.

Since then the company has stayed completely silent on it. Could it be related to a new project their working on, or maybe perhaps they’ll be announcing some Comic-Con plans.

What do you think? Leave your theories and comments down below, and stay tuned to Geekscape to find out what this breaking news is.

Today, Xbox’s Games With Gold for July were revealed, and it’s looking to be another solid month for gold members again as these games are looking pretty solid. Friday was quite an entertaining day for sonic fans.

Yesterday, Sonic and Dr. Eggman themselves took to Twitter to answer some eager fans questions. It was a very strange hour or 2, but here are some of the best recaps from the event.

There were many more interactions such as a couple with Archie Comics and Deus Ex, but there are too many to link here. If you want to see more check out the official Sonic Twitter and have a good laugh or 2. The last thing the duo left us with was a small tease of what they’re planning at the 25th Anniversary SDCC party at The House of Blues on July 22. 2 Years ago Jackbox Games released The Jackbox Party Pack onto the world. The game contained 5 unique multiplayer party games that made use of the person’s phone, tablet, or PC. One of those 5 games was a small little title called Drawful. The game consisted of players using their devices to draw (usually badly) images of a random odd word given to them. After that, the other players would get write what they think the picture looks like, resulting in them having to find the real title of the picture amongst a sea of false answers.

The game became a breakout hit, so it’s pretty inevitable that the game would get a sequel. Well, Drawful 2 is finally here for the masses to consume, but has Jackbox Games added enough to make the game stand on its own? Time to find out!

Drawful 2 Menu

The first thing you’ll notice when you boot up Drawful 2 is that you have 2 different options for gameplay now.  You still have the regular play drawful mode, but now due to an over abundance of suggestions, players are now finally able to create their own custom prompts using the brand new make your own game feature. This allows you to do just that, and it’s just as fun as it sounds. You can create entire custom episodes with custom names and prompts, and even share them online with other people. This is just one of the many great new social media features that really helps strengthen the game’s community.

Drawful 2 Custom

Custom prompts aren’t the only new thing to Drawful 2 though, as you can now draw not only with 1, but 2 different colors! This feature may have seemed a bit silly to talk about when the game was initially announced, but it really does make a big difference. Adding a 2nd color to the mix really helps keep the pictures from looking completely stagnant and helps add an extra layer of creativity onto the pictures.

But wait! That’s not all. In tradition with making their games as stream friendly as possible, the game now includes a wealth of streaming options such as extended timers, twitch log in integration, and even the ability to censor unruly players and trolls trying to dampen the experience. Also going back to social media, one of the most surprisingly fun new additions is now being able to look at a gallery of all the drawings at the end of the game and being able to share them over Twitter (maybe make a future update that also allows people to post to Facebook also.)

Now, even though I adore this game for all that it’s done right so far, there are sadly a couple of complaints.  These mainly have to do with the fact that I encountered multiple servers crashes and errors during my play time with the game. I’m confident that the team over at Jackbox is working hard to resolve these issues, and that most of them could have been due to a large amount of people trying to access the servers at once, but it was still enough to disrupt us enough to where I had to reset the game at one point in order to access the game again.

Conclusion:

Drawful 2 is yet another gut busting party game that’s sure to become a main stay during your family game night. The new social media and streaming features are a very welcome enjoyment, and the ability to use 2 colors as well as make your own custom prompts helps extend the overall replayability of the game as well as strengthen its community.  The only thing currently holding the game back right now is it’s inconsistent connection errors, but hopefully that’ll be getting fixed soon.

Final Rating: 4/5! Buy it!
