For the past few weeks we’ve heard plenty of rumors regarding who would direct the highly anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII. At the same time, a screenwriter for the next chapter in the sci-fi franchise is still being sought. According to Vulture, the current leading contender to work on the films’s screenplay is Academy Award winning writer Michael Arndt.

Arndt has previously worked on Little Miss Sunshine, Pixar’s Toy Story 3 as well as the screenplay for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Ardnt has written a 40 to 50 page treatment for the film and will most likely pen a draft for the project. The site reports that the film is looking at a 2014 shoot to get it into theaters in 2015.

So, what about the director? Ardnt’s treatment will be hitting the desks of many of the top directors out there including Steven Spielberg, J.J. Abrams and Brad Bird. We’re not saying that any of these directors are interested in the project but Disney apparently is looking to offer the film to the big directors first.

Ardny is well known as a Star Wars fan and has close relationship with Disney’s Pixar. So it shouldn’t be no surprise that Lucasfilm and Disney would have an interest in him writing the next chapter in the Star Wars saga. As prior stated in these matters…keep an eye for official announcements soon.

Today we released a brand new clip from our upcoming zombie culture documentary ‘Doc of the Dead‘! And by “we” I mean the fine folks at Exhibit A Pictures, Red Letter Media and Geekscape!

The clip features Simon Pegg talking about the idea of the zombie Stormtrooper… and why it’s so sad…

‘Doc of the Dead’ is currently running a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for additional filming. Please share, contribute and spread our zombie cause as much as you can! As we hit various benchmarks, we will release new clips!

Expect a lot of rumors to surface when it comes to Star Wars: Episode VII until any official announcements begin to get made. The biggest question that is surrounding this film is who will be directing. Last week I did a list of directors who should direct the next film and it appears that one of the names on that list has surfaced in connection to the film. According to Collider, while this rumor has not been confirmed, X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn may actually be in talks to direct the next chapter in the Star Wars saga.

I’m hearing that Matthew Vaughn, the director of Kick-Ass, Stardust, Layer Cake, and X-Men: First Class, is in talks with Lucasfilm to helm Star Wars: Episode VII. My sources tell me this is the main reason he dropped out of the X-Men sequel (which Bryan Singer is now directing).

So, could this be the real reason Vaughn left the sequel to X-Men: First Class? Quite possibly. Do I think Vaughn would be a fantastic choice to breathe fresh air into this franchise while keeping the things we love about it intact? Definitely. With plans to release Episode VII in 2015 we should definitely be expecting some form of official news regarding the film in the coming months.

Back in 2009 Jim Dorey of the blog, Marketsaw, claimed that Lucasfilm were already working on Star Wars: Episodes VII, VIII & IX. Well, now that this has turned out to be true the blog has posted even more information from their “source”. While, this could turn out be completely false, it definitely does sound interesting.

According to the source, the new trilogy will be reworked versions of what George Lucas was planning all the way back to when he made the original films. Apparently, this new set of films will follow the same tone of the original trilogy. We will see Luke Skywalker as a key character and apparently Mark Hamill is already signed on as well as many of “the original trilogy cast” with Han Solo, Chewbacca, Princess Leia, C3PO and R2D2 set to appear. One key point that the source revealed was the Empire was definitely not destroyed at the end of Return Of The Jedi.

Another interesting bit of information that was revealed was that Disney has a very interesting short list of directors that includes:

– Steven Speilberg (I shouldn’t have to tell you what he has done)

While he is not the new generation that Lucas talked about taking over, Spielberg has said in the past that he’d like a shot at directing a Star Wars film.

– Neil Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium)

– Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men, Gravity)

– Matthew Vaughn (Kick Ass, First Class)

– Darren Arnofsky (The Fountain, Noah)

– Joss Whedon (Serenity, The Avengers)

But with this one he made sure to point out not to hold your breath as far as directing Episode VII…but that he may actually play another part in it.

So, while this source did indeed reveal three years ago that we would be getting another trilogy…I would definitely file these in the rumor department for the moment. However, I have been proven wrong before. So we’re going to have to wait and see. Remember, 2015 isn’t that far, far away.

Long time Geekscape pal Axel Braun sent the word today that work has begun on a third sequel to the popular Star Wars XXX: A Porn Parody. The original film (believed to be the biggest budgeted adult film in history) shattered sales records to become the best selling adult DVD ever.

What better time to announce? Everything Star Wars has been big news this week after George Lucas sold his company to Disney for a whopping 4.05 billion in cash and stock. Interest in the franchise hasn’t been this high for some time, so this was an absolutely wonderful marketing move.

People love porn, and people love Star Wars (well, some of them), so I’m sure a lot of folks are excited to hear that we’ll be getting another amalgamation of the two. Including the just announced Episode VII, we’re set to receive three more titles in the Star Wars XXX universe (with the next one releasing this coming September)!

Excited? Have you seen the first film? If not, here’s a (safe for work) trailer!

On Tuesday the world received the shocking and unexpected news that Lucasfilm (including its subsidiaries) was sold to Disney for a whopping 4.4 billion in cash and stocks. You’ve probably heard this news time and time again, as every single website on the planet has been talking about it constantly for the last 48 hours.

Of course there’s been plenty of coverage on Geekscape too. Aside from the big news, Shawn gave us a few great choices for possible directors, while super fan Eric gave us some fantastic realizations of what we can expect to happen now that the franchise has moved to the house of mouse.

Turns out we were streets ahead on the topic. Nearly two years ago (January of 2011), our writer Witney wrote up some hypothetical reviews on the next three chapters in the Star Wars franchise. The years and titles may be wrong, and who knows how the movies will actually turn out, but in any case they’re definitely a fun read.

Does George Lucas need the $4 billion that he is getting from this Disney deal? Definitely not. Well, it seems that George Lucas is planning to donate the majority of the $4 billion sum that Disney are paying him for LucasFilm to good causes. A spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter that:

“George Lucas has expressed his intention, in the event the deal closes, to donate the majority of the proceeds to his philanthropic endeavors.”

They didn’t have any details as far as where the money will end up, but the writer and director is well known for his substantial donations to causes such as the Film Foundation, Stand Up To Cancer and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Lucas made the following statement this Wednesday:

“For 41 years, the majority of my time and money has been put into the company. As I start a new chapter in my life, it is gratifying that I have the opportunity to devote more time and resources to philanthropy.”

Well played Mr. Lucas.

Gilmore is back and things get pretty rude pretty quickly! Longtime Geekscape contributor Brian Gilmore is back on the show to talk Halloween, the rise of Cosplay and why Jonathan is a massive jerk. In news, all we can talk about is Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm and the Avenger-izing of the X-Men franchise at Fox! What does the future of Star Wars look like? Plus, Gilmore says ‘Wreck It Ralph’ is worth the trip and Jonathan says thanks for all the ‘Doc of the Dead’ love!

Many die-hard Star Wars fans upon hearing the news of a new trilogy assumed that they would be based on Timothy Zahn’s “Thrawn Trilogy”. The trilogy is a series of novels that pick up five years after the events depicted in Return Of The Jedi. The books have been mostly embraced by the fans of the series and praised for their action and expansion of the universe.

The most popular character in this trilogy is Maya Jade. The very complex charcter initially tries kill Luke Skywalker in order to avenge the death of Palpatine at his hands. However, she eventually falls for Luke and becomes his wife and eventually the mother of his son, Ben. But according to E! Online, their source at Lucasfilm is telling them we shouldn’t expect this one at all:

So is that the basis for Episode 7 or not? I’ve heard directly from LucasFilm and other sources close to the picture, and they say: Definitely not.

“It’s an original story,” a LucasFilm source tells me.

In other words, forget the Star Wars novels. Forget the graphic novels. Forget everything you think you know about what happens to Luke Skywalker. According to my sources, Episode 7 will literally be nothing you’ve ever seen or read before from the Star Wars universe.

I also hear from several sources that, no matter what you may hear to the contrary, no director has been officially attached to the project.

I think the idea of a new fresh take on the trilogy is more exciting myself. However, I can see some of the die-hard fans being a bit let down by this one because of the amount of praise these books received. Could this mean that we would get an entirely new cast for the next film? It’s a definite possibility.

So, unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 24 hours, you probably heard the news that shook the geek world to its very core yesterday. If not, here’s the recap: Disney has bought Lucasfilm for $4 billion dollars, and in even bigger news, has announced  Star Wars Episode VII for release in 2015, the start of a whole new trilogy. More to the point, the start of what will be several new trilogies. A few days ago, Star Wars was something that (outside of cartoons and comics) was over and done with, a series of films sitting comfortably on my shelf, and in my heart. (Well, most of them were in my heart) But whatever they were, they were definitely finished. Now, Star Wars will conceivably go one for the rest of my natural life. Gotta say…I didn’t see that comin’, at least not so soon. I was fully expecting ol’ George to be dead before this ever happened, to be honest. Certainly every time the rumor of more Star Wars movies surfaced in the last couple years, Lucas has emphatically denied that there would ever be any new Star Wars movies ever again. If Lucas hadn’t been a filmmaker, he could have been a politician.

George Lucas’ life has oddly paralleled that of his character Anakin Skywalker; both started out as brilliant rebels against a corrupt system, gaining fame and notoriety in the process. Then both became the heads of their own Empires, becoming the very thing they hated the most. Lucas has even publicly acknowledged this irony in interviews he has given in the past few years. But much like Anakin Skywalker, it seems Lucas has learned the point of his own story. He knows what is best for Star Wars now is just to let it go.

If there was any point to the story of the prequels trilogy (and underneath the midi-chlorians and the gungans and the wooden acting, I think there was) it was that possessiveness and the refusal to let go are the path to the dark side; it seems George Lucas has, towards the end of his life, learned that lesson, and finally let Star Wars go. Hopefully, he has let it go to younger filmmakers who arguably love his saga even more than he does. But speaking of younger filmmakers, just who will the Mouse get to do this?

Who Will Disney Get To Write And Direct?

That’s the real question isn’t it? Geekscape’s very own Shawn Madden had some quality suggestions. Whoever they get, they will have to be a name director, someone fans can trust…this isn’t Tron Legacy, where they can get some guy who made his name making commercials and just hope for the best. After all, this isn’t just any movie franchise, this is THE movie franchise. To put it bluntly, Disney can’t afford to fuck this one up. Same goes for the screenwriter. I know they are said to be working off Lucas’ original outline for Episodes VII to IX, but they need to make sure we get a real high quality screenwriter on this one so we don’t get any Lucasy bad dialogue. Oh, and speaking of Lucas’ original outline for the sequel trilogy they are said to be using as a jumping off point, this just proves that Lucas is as big a flip flopper as Mitt Romney; years ago he mentioned a proposed outline for Episodes VII to IX, then in interviews after the release of Revenge of the Sith he said there were never any story ideas for a sequel trilogy. Now, he’s back to having story treatments for all three movies again. Seriously George, run for some kind of public office, you’d be a natural.

Space Them Out

Although the announcement says that starting in 2015 there will be a new Star Wars installment “every two to three years” I really hope Disney pays attention to how the original (as well as prequel) movies were released, and keep to the every three years schedule. Now that you’ve got the golden goose Disney, don’t abuse it by releasing too many, too fast. If you put too much product out, you risk over-saturation of the brand, and you get what happen to the Star Trek franchise in the late 90’s. There was a sixteen year gap between Jedi and Phantom Menace, and we saw that long waits between sagas did nothing to quench the thirst for new Star Wars. Keep to the every three years schedule, and for the love of Chewie, keep a distance of at least five to six years or so between trilogies. Play this one smart, not greedy.

What Will The Story Even Be About?

At the end of Return of the Jedi, the Sith are vanquished and the Galactic Empire defeated. The entire six episode saga is about the rise, fall and redemption of Anakin Skywalker, as he fulfills his ultimate destiny and destroys the Sith by killing the Emperor (and himself) in the process. But who could rival Darth Vader and the Emperor as the central villains? Even in episodes I, II and III, Palpatine was the real baddie behind it all. If the Sith somehow return, doesn’t that negate the whole point of the previous films? I mean, the wars have to continue in some form (I mean, Wars is kind of in the title) But who the good guys will be fighting against is the real mystery. Unlike with episodes I-III, there are no real hints from Lucas about what the future installments could be about for fans to chew on for the next few years. All he has ever mentioned over the years are some very vague comments about “Luke passing down the lightsaber” and that is about it.

Which Classic Characters Will Return?

I can say with some certainty that Mark Hamill will probably return as Luke Skywalker, now as a wise old Jedi in the Obi-Wan Kenobi mold. Also certain to return are the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO, and probably Chewbacca as well. As for who won’t be back, I think it is fair to say that Han Solo is out of the picture now. Do we really wanna see old fart Harrison Ford back in that black vest again at 75 years of age? I know I sure as hell don’t. I mean, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was bad enough. I have a hard time thinking of a role for an old Han in any Star Wars stories set even just a few decades past Jedi. And I’d bet Carrie Fisher is just as off the table for a return as Princess Leia, although she could have a role as Supreme Chancellor of the New Republic or something. But frankly, I’d rather remember Han and Leia as they were. I really think that Luke is the only human character from the classic films who should make a return.

Fan made art depicting what an Obi-Wan like “Old Luke” could look like.

Will Episodes VII-IX Negate The Expanded Universe? Or Be Inspired By It?

Over the past twenty odd years, the events after Return of the Jedi have been chronicled to death in dozens and dozens of novels, comic books and video games. Although written by many different authors over the past two decades, Lucasfilm has (for the most part) kept this “Expanded Universe” continuity tight between all the various media, resulting in a post Episode VI timeline that covers the marriage of Han and Leia, the birth of their children and their subsequent training as Jedi Knights, and even in some cases their deaths. If I’m not mistaken, the last Star Wars novel with the original characters went up to something like forty years past the events of Return of the Jedi.

But a new movie series set after Jedi could take all these stories fans have invested in over the years and chuck them out the window. But there are a lot of fans of this stuff out there, and to start this new trilogy by saying that all those stories millions of fans have invested in “just didn’t happen” might not be the best way for Disney to start this new relationship with the hard core Star Wars audience. Not only that, but by doing so, it sends the message that the books and comics don’t really matter. If the fans think they don’t count, they’ll be less inclined to buy new books and comics in the future. And I can promise that selling less product is not what Disney wants.

This is just a small fraction of what is known as the “Expanded Universe” of Star Wars novels and comics. Will Episodes VII through IX just ignore all of these?

So what to do? My suggestion is the “have your cake and eat it too” scenario. Have the new trilogy take place not just decades, but maybe even centuries after Return of the Jedi. Luke Skywalker could still be there, as a wise old Jedi Master. We know Yoda was so powerful with the Force he lived hundreds of years, why couldn’t the same be said for Luke? This way, we can skip over all that Expanded Universe stuff that deals with the immediate decades after Return of the Jedi, but not really negate any of it either. They could probably even find some ways to incorporate certain EU stuff into the movies as Easter eggs.

Speaking Of The Expanded Universe, What About The Comics?

Yesterday will probably go down as “Black Tuesday” at the offices of Dark Horse Comics. Dark Horse has been the home of Star Wars comics for over twenty years now, but probably not for a whole lot longer. In fact, Star Wars comics have been what has kept the company afloat in tough times. But as soon as their current contract with Lucasfilm ends, you can be sure Star Wars will go to Disney-owned rival Marvel Comics. There is a certain poetic symmetry to that, as Marvel was Star Wars‘ original comic book home back during the 1970’s. Similarly, you can expect Clone Wars (or whatever future Star Wars animated shows) to leave Time-Warner owned Cartoon Network and go to Disney XD. For both comics and toons, it is only a matter of time for everything to converge at the House of Mouse.

Star Wars will soon likely return to it’s original home in comics at Marvel.

What About Future Box Sets? Can They Even Happen Now?

Even though physical media is on the wane, there is still one set of Blu-rays that people will always want on their shelves, and that’s the Star Wars Saga. With Episodes XII-IX and all future installments coming from Disney now, a complete saga set might prove difficult. Twentieth Century Fox still has the release rights to all six existing Star Wars films until the year 2020. Now, that’s not such a big deal, as by 2021 this new trilogy will be done and then Disney could release a big complete saga box set free and clear.

But there is one tiny little obstacle. Because Fox owns the rights to A New Hope in perpetuity, meaning for there to be any complete series set, a deal will have to be struck with Disney to allow for its inclusion. But this could be all be a good thing, and here is why: In all likelihood, Fox will take a very fat check from Disney and release A New Hope to them, as long as they can release the original theatrical version as a stand alone release, making fanboys all over the world happy. This way, everybody gets what they want. Well, except for fans who want to hear Lapti Nek in Jabba’s Palace again, and not see Hayden Christiansen at the end of Return of the Jedi. You guys might still be screwed.

And here I thought last year’s box set would be the last time I had to buy a “Complete Saga” collection. I really should have known better.

Oh Yeah…And What About Indy??

The best news about the acquisition of Lucasfilm might be for Indiana Jones. I’ve thought for years now that Indiana Jones should be like James Bond, with younger actors taking on the whip and fedora for a series of films, and then turning them over to another new actor after a period of time. Indy should always be in his twenties or thirties, fighting off Nazis  during the 1930’s and 40’s, and looking for fortune and glory. Even though the announcement today said that Disney isn’t looking at Indiana Jones as a property right now, don’t expect that attitude to last. Expect a newly rebooted Dr. Jones within the next five years or so. I should add that I think this should be for all NEW adventures for Indiana Jones….anyone who event attempts to remake Raiders of the Lost Ark should be flogged out in public.

So for now, these are this geek’s biggest questions and concerns about the future of Star Wars and a certain intrepid archaeologist. Of course, fandom is just starting to speculate on what this all could mean. All I know is that I’d love to go back in time and tell the 9 year old version of me that in one summer coming up soon, I’d have an Avengers movie, a Justice League movie and a sequel to Return of the Jedi coming out within weeks of each other. Man, I sure hope those Mayans were wrong about 2012, or I’m gonna be pissed off.

With the huge news that George Lucas had sold Lucasfilm to Walt Disney today also came the revelation that we would be getting another Star Wars trilogy starting with Episode VII in 2015. The big question is…who should direct the next chapter in the Star Wars saga? Well, let’s take a look at five choices who may just be the right pick to get behind the camera.

Brad Bird

Let’s just establish right off the bat that Brad Bird is definitely one of the best directors out there. Second, let’s recognize that the director has the ability to come into an existing franchise and give it a breath of new life. See: Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. The director doesn’t so much work on making the material recognizeable as his own but rather emphasizes on the story over everything else with everything else just seeming to fall into place. A smart choice? Definitely.

Matthew Vaughn

Vaughn is another director who has the ability to breathe life into an established franchise that may have seemed long dead without forgetting to include what we loved about the franchise in the first place. Not only that but he is a very talented director who can shift between tones with ease. Look at the work he did on X-Men: First Class with the budget and time he had. Now, imagine what he could do on a larger scale.

J.J. Abrams

I know. This one is almost too obvious. He brought back another “Star” franchise and made it loved by new and old fans alike. The thing is though, Abrams is a talented director and can even make a strong film with a not-so-great script. Now, think about what he can accomplish with a strong script. If Abrams could mix what he did with Star Trek and Super 8, he could definitely make one of the best Star Wars films of all time.

Kenneth Branagh

Kennth Branagh is another director who has the ability to do a large scale film that focuses on the story and characters while not losing sight of just how big the film is as seen with his last film, Marvel Studios’ Thor. Branagh would definitely hit all the right marks when it comes to getting the Shakespearean and iconic elements into a Star Wars film. There’s plenty of archetypical story telling in the original trilogy that could be brought back by someone with Branagh’s sentiments.

Joe Johnston

First off, let’s remember that he is quite familiar with material. And we’re not talking the prequels. Johnston worked as a concept artist and effects technician on all three of the original films. Additionally, Johnston has actually shown interest in directing a Star Wars film in the past. A few years back, Johnston talked about wanting to do a film that would focus on Boba Fett, so the interest and desire to do a Star Wars film is definitely there. As seen with his work on Captain America: The First Avenger, the director has the ability to deliver a good sense of a broad story with his films while still not losing site of it’s characters. The only problem Johnston may have with the film would be delivering the dark elements that are definitely needed.

With a 2015 release targeted for the film, it should be expected that sometime soon we will learn who Disney will be putting behind the camera for Episode VII. However, the most important thing here is getting the story for this film right. And we currently have no idea what the story is at all for the film. So, until then we have no idea whether any of these choices will actually be the right choice for the film. Are there any directors out there that you would like to see helm the next chapter in the Star Wars franchise?

So, remember those times when you said George Lucas needs to stop messing with Star Wars films? Well, now he won’t be able. The Walt Disney Company has agreed to acquire Lucasfilm Ltd. from George Lucas, who owns 100% of the company. In addition to this news it’s been revealed that Disney has targeted 2015 for a release date for Star Wars Episode VII. So, tired of George Lucas raping your beloved childhood? Don’t worry about it because he won’t have the chance anymore with the properties now in much better hands.

Disney has long had a close relationship with closely held Lucasfilm and founder George Lucas, including featured attractions at Disney theme parks such as Star Tours at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida.

The full press release:

BURBANK, Calif. & SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Continuing its strategy of delivering exceptional creative content to audiences around the world, The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) has agreed to acquire Lucasfilm Ltd. in a stock and cash transaction. Lucasfilm is 100% owned by Lucasfilm Chairman and Founder, George Lucas.

Under the terms of the agreement and based on the closing price of Disney stock on October 26, 2012, the transaction value is $4.05 billion, with Disney paying approximately half of the consideration in cash and issuing approximately 40 million shares at closing. The final consideration will be subject to customary post-closing balance sheet adjustments.
“Lucasfilm reflects the extraordinary passion, vision, and storytelling of its founder, George Lucas,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company. “This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney’s unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value.”

“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” said George Lucas, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lucasfilm. “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney’s reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products.”

Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Lucasfilm, a leader in entertainment, innovation and technology, including its massively popular and “evergreen” Star Wars franchise and its operating businesses in live action film production, consumer products, animation, visual effects, and audio post production. Disney will also acquire the substantial portfolio of cutting-edge entertainment technologies that have kept audiences enthralled for many years. Lucasfilm, headquartered in San Francisco, operates under the names Lucasfilm Ltd., LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic, and Skywalker Sound, and the present intent is for Lucasfilm employees to remain in their current locations.

Kathleen Kennedy, current Co-Chairman of Lucasfilm, will become President of Lucasfilm, reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Additionally she will serve as the brand manager for Star Wars, working directly with Disney’s global lines of business to build, further integrate, and maximize the value of this global franchise. Ms. Kennedy will serve as executive producer on new Star Warsfeature films, with George Lucas serving as creative consultant. Star Wars Episode 7 is targeted for release in 2015, with more feature films expected to continue the Star Wars saga and grow the franchise well into the future.
The acquisition combines two highly compatible family entertainment brands, and strengthens the long-standing beneficial relationship between them that already includes successful integration of Star Wars content into Disney theme parks in Anaheim, Orlando, Paris and Tokyo.

Driven by a tremendously talented creative team, Lucasfilm’s legendary Star Wars franchise has flourished for more than 35 years, and offers a virtually limitless universe of characters and stories to drive continued feature film releases and franchise growth over the long term. Star Wars resonates with consumers around the world and creates extensive opportunities for Disney to deliver the content across its diverse portfolio of businesses including movies, television, consumer products, games and theme parks. Star Wars feature films have earned a total of $4.4 billion in global box to date, and continued global demand has made Star Wars one of the world’s top product brands, and Lucasfilm a leading product licensor in the United States in 2011. The franchise provides a sustainable source of high quality, branded content with global appeal and is well suited for new business models including digital platforms, putting the acquisition in strong alignment with Disney’s strategic priorities for continued long-term growth.

The Lucasfilm acquisition follows Disney’s very successful acquisitions of Pixar and Marvel, which demonstrated the company’s unique ability to fully develop and expand the financial potential of high quality creative content with compelling characters and storytelling through the application ofinnovative technology and multiplatform distribution on a truly global basis to create maximum value. Adding Lucasfilm to Disney’s portfolio of world class brands significantly enhances the company’s ability to serve consumers with a broad variety of the world’s highest-quality content and to create additional long-term value for our shareholders.

The Boards of Directors of Disney and Lucasfilm have approved the transaction, which is subject to clearance under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act, certain non-United States merger control regulations, and other customary closing conditions. The agreement has been approved by the sole shareholder of Lucasfilm.

Just like the Marvel acquisition, this one caught everyone by surprise. According to Disney’s Robert Iger, there are plans to release a new Star Wars film every 2 – 3 years with Episodes 7 through 9 to be directed by three different directors.

This will be part of Disney’s target slate of 8-10 live action films it releases each year which also includes the Marvel Studios films. With a new Star Wars and The Avengers sequel both hitting theaters, it’s safe to say that Disney will dominate the 2015 box office.

A few days back it was revealed that Angry Birds: Star Wars was coming. And now the official release date has been revealed as November 8. The site Angry Birds: Star Wars shows all the birds as Star Wars characters as well as news on the game. Oh, and the game got a trailer that you can  check out below.

The press release states that the game will “combine all the fun of the classic Angry Birds and Angry Birds Space with the characters, stories and settings of the epic space fantasy, Star Wars”, and it looks like it will feature locations from the Star Wars universe from Tatooine to inside the Death Star.

It’s been revealed that Lucas Arts and Rovio will be teaming up to release a new game, officially titled Angry Birds: Star Wars. The game takes Rovio’s iconic birds and recasts them as Star Wars characters. We will have The Red Bird as Luke Skywalker, the Yellow Bird as Han Solo and the Big Brother Bird as Chewbacca.

I haven’t yet seen the show myself, but this looks damn cool.

Did you know that a new Star Wars comedy series in the works from the creators of Robot Chicken?

Well there is! Star Wars: Detours was announced a few days ago at Celebration VI. No release date has been announced at this time, but here are some clips!

The more that comes out about Star Wars: 1313 the more I get excited. The concept is pretty cool. You’re a bounty hunter and you are going to the lower depths of Coruscant in search of someone. Well take a gander at this mini documentary on what the creators were trying to achieve with this new approach to the Star Wars universe.

Today, we got ourselves a fresh new gameplay trailer for the upcoming third person shooter in the Star Wars universe, Star Wars 1313! Take a look here!

Now, let me reiterate for you that was all gameplay. They have tweaked the Unreal 3 engine to a point that cutscenes and gameplay will blend perfectly. The best part about this trailer is the last bit, we get a nice skybox (if you can call it that) of Level 1313. No release date has been given yet.

San Diego Comic-Con 2012 is now over and I’ve been trying to get back to some semblance of a life, which has proved to be mildly difficult to do. See, this was only my second time ever going to SDCC. My first time was back in 2010 when I went for a single day. This time I was able to get my geek on for the entirety of SDCC thanks to Geekscape. Let me just say that going from one day to every day is a giant leap. To say that my ass was beat by Sunday would be an understatement. Regardless, it was still one hell of a ride. I’ve decided to just break down my experience into one article as opposed to doing multiple articles. It’s mainly due to the fact that some of the panels I went to were more entertaining than others and therefore

Preview NightMyself and Shawn Madden arrived into the heart of Whale’s Vagina at around 2 pm. We made our way over to the Hyatt where Shawn was staying with Mr. London and Geekscape’s own Rarity cosplaying brony, Shane O’hare. Once the luggage was dropped off I headed over to the convention center to pick up my badge. Seeing as it was only 3 pm and the floor didn’t open until 6 pm, Shawn and I decided to head into the Gaslamp District and grab some lunch and check things out. Lionsgate was going to show a free screening of Dredd later that night so we went by the theater to see if there was a line forming yet. There wasn’t so we went to TGIFriday’s for happy hour. After some much needed 1/2 priced appetizers and a long island iced tea (I was on vacation, don’t judge me) we headed back by the theater and found that there was a line forming but it was still early so we weren’t too worried. We killed some time until 6 pm rolled around, at which point I headed back to the convention center to check out Preview night while Shawn decided he would go grab us a prime spot in the line for the movie.

Upon setting foot on the convention floor my first thought was “where the hell is the Geekscape booth?” I knew it was booth #3919 but I had no idea where that was. Luckily, SDCC has giant banners hanging above the aisles letting you know what aisle number you’re on. Unlucky for me though was the fact that the floor was packed with people trying to get their hands on all the exclusives available. It was mass chaos on the floor with people pushing and shoving trying to get around, it was a nightmare. After what seemed like an eternity I finally found my way to Geekscape’s home for the duration of SDCC met some of the other writers for the site. It was good to finally put faces to names for the first time and after pleasantries had been made I decided to leave the madness of Preview Night behind me and head back to the theater to meet up with Shawn. It was 7:30 pm by the time I got there and a small but decent sized line had started to form. We had a good place in line for the movie…or so I thought.

Lionsgate had been advertising this free screening of Dredd all over twitter for at least a week but what they failed to advertise was the fact that it was  press screening of the movie and that seating was super limited. This was a fact no one in line knew until about 9:30 that night when a second line started forming next to the one we were waiting in. To say that the whole thing was a giant clusterfuck and was horrible organized would be a huge understatement. Needless to say, after they let in every member of the press only about 20 people from our line were let in. Yeah, we waited for about 3 and a half hours only to not get into the movie. Sucks to be us. After we let our geek rage subside we decided to call it a night and get some rest for day one of SDCC.

Day OneFirst stop was booth 1515 to pick up a 50 Shades of Grey button for a friend back east. Why they were giving out 50 Shades buttons at SDCC I have no idea but picked one up I did *Yoda voice*. After that I did some wandering around the floor and took buku photos of everything. Then I made my way to the Geekscape booth to say my hellos and meet up with Eric Diaz and our friend Noah. While waiting in the booth I  did manage to snap a pic of Katniss Everdeen as she attempted to assassinate Jonathan. Luckily for Jonathan’s sake, brony extraordinaire Shane O’Hare was close by and able to use his magical pony powers to defeat Katniss and save Jonathan’s life. True story.

Most of my day was spent wandering around the convention floor and taking a shit load of pictures like a Japanese tourist at Disneyland. I even made an impulse buy that I am in no way shape or form ashamed of despite the fact that perhaps I should be. What was that impulse buy you ask? It was a Wampa hat of course! You know, because every person really needs their own Wampa hat. All I’ve got to say about this is that I think I look absolutely fabulous in it and that it will keep my noggin warm the next time I find myself on the frozen tundra of Hoth.

There was a press conference for Disney that afternoon that I was fortunate enough to attend. It consisted of 3 seperate Q&A press conferences for Frankenweenie, Oz: The Great and Powerful, and Wreck-It Ralph. First up was Frankenweenie with Tim Burton there to answer questions about his latest stop-motion movie. Burton said that this movie was something that was very near and dear to his heart and he was very glad to be able to return to it and expand on his original idea.  When asked what it was like to walk out onto the stage at Hall H and feel the love from the huge crowd, “It’s amazing you know, I wish my family treated me that way. I walk in the door and no one says anything, so it’s nice for a change to get that sorta thing (laughs). I remember coming here back in the late 70’s when it was at the Holiday Inn. It’s amazing what it’s turned into.”

Next up was the press conference for Oz: The Great and Powerful. It featured director Sam Raimi and stars Mila Kunis and Michelle Williams. Let me just say that I’m usually not one to get star-struck but when I saw these two beautiful women walk on stage I instantly fell in love twice. My jaw damn near hit the floor but being as I was about 10 feet from them I had to forcibly keep my jaw closed and make sure I didn’t start drooling. Yeah, they are that gorgeous in the real world. This was a good press conference in which some good questions were asked. When asked what it was like to step into the world of a beloved classic Rami had one of the single greatest responses I’ve heard. “We all love The Wizard of Oz movie but we were careful to respect it. But really ours is a different story, it’s a story that leads up to The Wizard of Oz. It’s a story about how the wizard came from Kansas to the land of Oz and how a slightly selfish became a slightly more selfless man. And its the story of how he became the Wizard. It’s a fantastic story that answers that question… It’s not really a remaking The Wizard of Oz, so it’s not really something we had a problem we had to deal with.”

The final panel of the day was for Wreck-It Ralph and was just a lot of fun. John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman were in attendance and both of them just hilarious. Naturally video games were a hot topic through out this press conference. When asked what their favourite games were growing up Reilly’s answer was “I am dating myself by saying this but I was the test audience for Space Invaders. I spent a lot of money on Space Invaders.” Silverman loved Pitfall, Joust, and was big on Centipede. Everyone was eager to know how hard it was to get video game companies to license out their characters and as it turns out most of them were all too eager to let their characters be used in the movie. Wreck-It Ralph just reminds me so much of my youth and I can’t wait for this one to come out.

My first day at SDCC may have been over but the was just beginning. Thursday night was the Geekscape party that we co-hosted along with Stan Lee’s Comikaze, I’d tell you all  about it but then Jonathan would have to kill me. All I can say is that I saw a Predator crumping, Dark Helmet win the costume contest, and that I saw Geekscape’s own Shawn Madden get in a break-dance battle with the red Power Ranger. I’m not making that up, that really happened!

Come back tomorrow for part II and find out where my journey through SDCC lead me next.

We had an awesome time at Comic-Con 2012 but sadly it’s now over and we’ve returned to our normal lives.

Luckily we still have fond memories and plenty of pictures to go along with it. This year we made an Instagram account @GeekscapeDotNet (follow us, you know you want to). It allowed us to take plenty of cosplay photos as well as a few photos from panels and other cool stuff.

So without further ado here is the Geekscape 2012 Comic-con photo gallery!

Legendary makeup FX man Iain McCaig dropped by the booth today to sign posters for Space Command. Afterwards, he talked to me about his influences as well as his work designing Darth Maul, The Avengers, Terminator 2 and a ton of other favorite films from the past 30 years!

If you couldn’t already tell, we are very excited for Star Wars 1313. The E3 hype machine keeps running. Gander your eye holes at Star Wars 1313 in full moving pictures!

Now I was already sold on this game when I heard the premise, saw the pics and read the preview. Seeing it MOVE is like…it’s like sex. The seamless trailers-to-gameplay part made my whole body tingle. I publicly swore off Star Wars after the fucking dance fiasco, but 1313 may have revived my Star Wars love.

There’s been a lot of recent buzz and hype regarding Lucasart’s newest addition to the already long line Star Wars video games. Much of the buzz is being generated by the graphical power Star Wars: 1313 is showing off. Now, to better understand how much graphical power this game is giving, look it at this way:

The above screenshot is running off a pre-alpha build.  That’s right. The fine men and women hard are hard at work in the early production stages of Star Wars 1313.

Perhaps the most exciting piece of information released by LucasArts at E3 2012 was the list of departments working on this title. All departments of Lucasfilm have, or are going to have their hand in crafting 1313. Behind closed doors, I was able to see a short, but very sweet behind the scenes video featuring employees from Industrial Light & Magic, Skywalker Sound and Lucasfilm Animation Ltd. Their enthusiasm and talent make 1313 a stand out among past Star Wars video games. If there’s anything gamers should know coming out of the behind the closed doors presentation, it’s the creators’ mantra:

“We never want to see anything in a cutscene that we wouldn’t want to play.

1313 be a third person shooter of sorts, with some extreme platforming mixed in. Finding the perfect balance should deliver a great cinematic gaming experience.

It is unclear as to when exactly 1313 takes place in the Star Wars universe. One of the things I found most interesting about 1313 was the repeated use of the word franchise. It looks like we’ll be able to look forward to sequels. 1313‘s release date has not been announced. In fact, I was told that the character we’ve grown used to over the course of a couple of days is a placeholder. We’ll get an introduction as to who the character is, and hopefully soon.

Check out some more shots from the game:

According to this article at JoBlo, George Lucas is retiring from commercial filmmaking. We heard some of these sentiments around the time Red Tails was released, and then it was recently announced that longtime friend Kathleen Kennedy was taking over operation of Lucasfilm. Now this seems to confirm it.

As the article quotes, “I’m moving away from the company, I’m moving away from all my businesses, I’m finishing all my obligations and I’m going to retire to my garage with my saw and hammer and build hobby movies. I’ve always wanted to make movies that were more experimental in nature, and not have to worry about them showing in movie theatres.”

You mean the prequels WEREN’T experimental films!?! So, let’s ask it: Is this the end of the Star Wars and Indiana Jones cinematic universes? And are you interested in seeing some of George’s “hobby movies”?

The Pre-E3 hype machine is running on all cylinders as Lucasarts sent out this teaser image of their new, mature themed Star Wars game: Star Wars 1313

The game takes place on level 1313. A criminal haven deep underground on Coruscant. You take control of a new bounty hunter as you hunt down your contracts and are trying to  figure out a huge criminal conspiracy.

The emphasis in this Star Wars game is on gadgets, weapons and tactics and not force powers. Think Dark Forces or Shadow of The Empire.

“We’re excited to share one of the projects LucasArts has been hard at work developing,” said Paul Meegan, President, LucasArts.  “Star Wars 1313 dives into a part of the Star Wars mythos that we’ve always known existed, but never had a chance to visit. We are committed to bringing the best gameplay experience and visual fidelity to life and I truly believe the work we are showcasing at E3 will speak for itself.”

Be sure to check out the  Starwars 1313 official site for more details, and keep and eye out for it at E3.
