Have you had your fill of crossover fighting games yet? Never! If you’re like me, you can’t get enough of the fast paced, flashy, over the top action of these 2D brawlers.

Courtesy of Sega and developers Ecole Software and French Bread, (the developers behind the indie hit, Melty Blood, and not a delicious Olive Garden dish,) Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax pulls characters from the pages of the Dengenki Bunko brand of light novels and into the fighting arena. Ranging from more popular series like Sword Art Online and DURARARA!!! to some obscure choices, alongside a few Sega representatives as guest stars, and you have one of the more exciting fighting games of the year that you probably haven’t heard of!

Sega’s latest trailer showcases four of the characters showcased in Fighting Climax, including SAO‘s Asuna. Here are the character descriptions from the press release:

Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax has a full roster of characters based on the Dengeki Bunko light novels and we’re going to begin introducing them to you! First up in this collection of four characters:

the strongest guild in Aincrad. Her nickname is “The Flash” due to her speed with her rapier, Lambent Light. Kirito is her boyfriend.
Kuroyukihime (“Accel World”) — The Umezato Jr. High student council V.P. She’s nicknamed Kuroyukihime, or “Snow Black,” because of her beauty. Her Brain Burst avatar is Black Lotus and she is Legion Master of the Nega Nebulas.
Shizuo Heiwajima (“DURARARA!!”) — A debt collector who dresses like a bartender. He hates violence, but when he loses his temper, he’s the strongest man in Ikebukuro. Flying vending machines are a clue that he’s around.
Tomoka Minato (“RO-KYU-BU!”) — A basketball ace at Keishin Academy.
Her mother does traditional dance and her father is a tea master, so her manners are impeccable. But when she starts to play basketball…
After seeing the game in action while keeping who’s behind it in mind, this suddenly went from being completely unknown to me, to being one of my top games for the end of the year. Shortly after the reveal of an HD remake for the PS2 classic, Odin Sphere, for the East, Atlus has confirmed that the game will be coming stateside as well! In 2016, Odin Sphere Leifthrasir, (pronounced LAYV-thra-sheer), will launch in the West for PS4, PS3 and PS Vita, bringing back the gorgeous hack and slash title that put Vanillaware on the map.

But it’s not enough just to port the game to newer consoles, which is why Atlus is promising a series of new features. Following five characters with unique stories based off of Norse mythology, this action RPG is getting all the bells and whistles to ensure that this classic has a real chance of ending up even better. Including redrawn art and upgraded visuals, Leifthrasir will also come equipped with a host of new upgrades to the combat and RPG elements, giving even veteran players a reason to come back!

Specific details are light at this point, but for anyone who played the original Odin Sphere as the sixth console generation was coming to a close, you’ll know how much of a win this is for those who love a visually stunning, often challenging 2D brawler. Last year when we played Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment, this game about gamers trapped in a game felt hindered partially by its slow pace. This issue is looking to be fixed in its upcoming remake, but would new installments learn from this mistake? It seemed obviously so in Sword Art Online: Lost Song, the upcoming PS4 and PS Vita title that looks to move Kirito and friends into a more fast paced, action focused affair while maintaining the illusion of an MMORPG. How well does this new system translate into the game? We put our monster slaying skills to the test in a brief demo at Anime Expo and Comic Con 2015 to find out.

For the purpose of the demo, Kirito and an AI controlled Asuna and Leefa were thrown into a huge, wide open field.  Littered with monsters both on land and in the sky, it was up to us to take out as many monsters as possible within a 10 minute time limit, just enough time to dig deep into what this new world has to offer. On the subject of how big the field is, Lost Song puts the power of the PS4 to good use, never encountering any slowdown despite how much was going on at one time. I found myself stepping away from fights and just flying high enough to enjoy the scenery, watching all the chaos going on below.

Speaking of flying, Kirito can now switch between land and air battles on the fly. Him and his team can now activate their attacks at will, coming off much more like an action game compared to previous SAO games, giving us plenty of ways to take down all kinds of threats. In order to keep the MMO feel, special attacks are still set to Macro style quick commands that are brought up by holding the shoulder buttons. Certain attacks would deliver huge damage to even the toughest enemies, but would also cost more ability points. If you have no points, you’re stuck with standard attacks, so in typical RPG style, you’ll have to manage these closely if you want to make sure to take out your biggest foes. When one person isn’t enough, delivering enough damage will give your team the chance to activate a triple team attack, inflicting huge damage and team boosts along the way. Keeping an eye on instant messages on the side of the screen will keep you clued in on what their status is, and sending across an encouraging message through emotes can only help!

If this sounds like a lot to take in, you’re not alone. My biggest issue with Lost Song in these early stages was that there’s so much to do, that it made the controls confusing to remember. Rarely feeling intuitive, there were plenty of times where I would get knocked down from the sky and slowly fall to the ground for what felt like ages until I figured out how to recover. Finding the right attacks and commands in the heat of battle often led to pressing the wrong one, keeping me from finishing off the giant dragon in the sky that I had worked so hard to take down. With more time and practice, this issue is sure to fade, but expect a decent learning curve when you pick up the game this fall.

All in all, Sword Art Online: Lost Song feels like a step in the right direction. Its faster paced game play is definitely a lot more fun, and if the controls can be ironed out, we have the potential to have a great game on our hands. Stop me if you’ve heard this before. A diverse group of young people with special powers come together to save the world from an all-powerful threat, or in other words, half the role playing games that have come out of Japan. But when it comes to the concept of Lost Dimension, the latest RPG from Atlus, that’s about all it has in common with prior releases. Because you see, it’s not enough to climb the dangerous tower that the team is locked in while destroying their foes along the way. And it’s not enough to defeat “The End”, a mysterious enemy that’s responsible for threatening the world, The only way to climb each floor is to sacrifice one of your own, one of which may end up being a traitor to the team. Your decisions determine whether or not you kill a loyal comrade, or a snake in the grass who is looking to double cross you when the time is right. Feeling the pressure yet?

As a tactical turn based title, most of your time crawling through Lost Dimension‘s dungeons will be spent completing objectives for each mission, most of which involve completely defeating the enemy squad. Basic game play lives and dies by the team assisting each other while positioning them to do the most damage. Every team member has a certain amount of space they can move in, with the idea being to get into attack range while avoiding a potential counter attack. Each character specializes in a particular weapon, (outside of their abilities, which we’ll talk more about below,) ranging from pistols to knives, swords and even their fists! Each weapon has its own range, accuracy and power, which is only increased by closing the distance between you and the target. If members in your party are also in range, they’ll follow up your attack with one of their own, allowing you to pile on the damage. Keep in mind though, that all of the above strategies apply for your opponents as well, so you’ll want to think twice about throwing your units to the wolves.

Each of the 11 member squad of psychics have their own specialties, (or Gifts as they’re called,) ranging from pyrokinesis to teleportation on top of their standard attacks. As you complete missions, earn EXP and level up, each member can expand their existing abilities or branch out towards new ones, with an impressive amount of options to unlock. You’ll obviously want to exploit enemy weaknesses with these Gifts in a variety of ways, ranging from using the right elemental attacks, boosting your party’s stats between clashes, luring enemies into small groups to take them out with area attacks and so on, but abusing your abilities drains your character’s sanity.

Losing your sanity is a double edged sword, because while that character does gain the benefit of boosted attack power and full health regeneration, their defense sinks while teammates around them get weaker due to being overcome with fear. The berserk teammate becomes CPU controlled and attacks friend and foe alike at random, so unless you’re using it as a last ditch effort to inch out a win, you’ll run a real risk of killing your own team. It’s all or nothing mechanics like these that make the combat that much more interesting, especially when the game comes off as an attempt at a “My First Strategy RPG” with how easily exploitable the fighting mechanics are with no real consequence to dying outside of earning a lower end of mission rank, and highly repetitive enemies. That’s not to say the game isn’t fun, (on the contrary, I found myself addicted more often than not,) but seasoned gamers should be able to blow through both the side and main quests pretty quickly.

While Lost Dimensions puts you in direct control of so many powerful psychics, players will primarily play as Sho, who The End seems to hold an unknown grudge against. Sho would have to hold some kind of amazing power to draw such ire from the main antagonist, right? Well at the start, Sho demonstrates his power to… shoot really well? In reality, his main power is the ability to read minds, which comes in handy when it’s eventually revealed that there’s a traitor on the team. At the end of each mission, (whether it’s replaying an old one or completing a quest for the first time,) Sho will hear thoughts from his team in the most extreme game of Guess Who anyone’s ever played. By mixing up your team of six, you’ll have to find the correlation between who’s on your team when these negative thoughts pop up, narrow it down to a few red herrings and the actual mole, then use your limited “Deep Vision” to dive into their mind and discover the truth. And if you’re thinking of using a guide to cheat your way through, don’t bother. The traitors are randomized during each play through.

Then again, as if Lost Dimension was trying to be as much of a reality show simulator as it is a video game, just because you know who you want to get rid of doesn’t mean your friends will agree. The balancing act that the game presents is that your team will trust whoever fights more often. Yet, the only way to pinpoint who the suspects are is by bringing them on missions. When quests wrap up, one or two comrades might ask your opinion in order to sway the votes a bit, but while this concept is great in concept, it becomes more of a chore to keep playing missions just to change the opinions of a few people until the vote is leaning towards the desired outcome.

Outside of the simplistic game play and the somewhat grind heavy parts that slow down Lost Dimension, its biggest flaw is a byproduct of its amazing concept. Since each character can be killed at the end of every chapter, outside of a few personality quirks, none of these people stand out at all. They don’t have strong ties to the main story, their personal backstories, (which can be uncovered by building relationships with them through optional, limited conversation choices,) came off as shallow and rarely left me attached, and uncovering them as traitors provides no explanation as to why they’re trying to destroy the world outside of a Scooby-Doo-esque, “darn, you caught me” speech. Motives are implied through hidden notes and a second run through New Game + provides more details on the overall narrative, but it’s hard to care about when your party members die off if you weren’t interested in them to begin with. The only real loss is being unable to expand their powers, but whatever you unlocked up to that point can be equipped to a living member, making sure those skills don’t go to waste.

So now that my time with Lost Dimension has come and gone, I’m left feeling like I’ve witnessed what could be the start of a truly innovative, potentially game changing series if these concepts are given more time to grow, but one thats not without its weak points. Small annoyances aside, (like not being able to skip enemy turns, the camera getting stuck on walls when displaying far away enemies, having to restart your entire turn to adjust your movement range and Nagi’s levitation leaving her stuck on people’s heads to name a few,) it’s unique ideas are held back by a weak plot and little reason to care about who lives and dies. Its simplistic game play and relatively short length for an RPG don’t help matters, and its grind heavy methods for altering votes make eliminations more tedious than they have to be. Still, the large amount of customization options when it comes to Gifts, the pressure when trying to find the traitor in each chapter, make this one of the more memorable games I’ve played this year. I truly feel like we have something special with Lost Dimension, it just needs some more refinement to execute its ambitious ideas.

If you couldn’t tell by reading our site or listening to the Geekscape Games podcast, Idea Factory can really churn out those Hyperdimension Neptunia games. Within the last year, the West has seen six as it is, with a proper sequel AND a zombie slaying spin-off starring Lowee’s CPU, Blanc, on the horizon. And yet, what if I told you that yet another spinoff is on its way?

In Hyperdimension Neptunia Vs. Sega Hard Girls, this upcoming Vita exclusive will put players in the oversized coat of IF, one of the original human, or “maker” characters from the original RPG who has stood by Neptune’s side ever since. This tough, no nonsense guild leader  finally gets a starring role, (and a redesign to go with it,) once the history books of the Grand Library begin to disappear. Altering these stories has the ability to change history itself, so Iffy takes it upon herself to go on an adventure through space and time to get them back.

Not that she’ll be alone on this adventure. As the title mentioned, Sega themed characters will make their appearance to fight alongside IF, namely Sega Hatsumi. This girl with an outfit that vaguely reminds us of a certain hedgehog, seems to be the key to the changes in history between the Sega Hard Girls and the four goddesses of Gamindustri, but how her role will play out is yet to be seen.

Game play wise, details are still murky as to what kind of game this will be, but based on the screenshots released so far, the game seems to be taking a more action based approach, which is perfect for the knife wielding heroine and her tough personality. Whether or not any other familiar faces will appear is yet to be seen as well, but come on, it’s a Neptunia game! It’s practically expected at this point.

A grand library that governs all of this world’s history.

If the history books stored there are tampered with, it is said that it is possible to rewrite actual history.

IF, with a certain goal in mind and after a long journey, finally sets foot within the grand library.

However, within that library, an incident occurs and the history books begin to disappear one after the other.

The disappearance of the history books means a loss of real history.

Before her very eyes, history is being lost, and then, the world.

To resolve this incident, IF must journey across space and time on a new adventure.

She’s an adventurer who travels around the world with her trusty motorcycle just trying to find a bit of fun and a brighter future in a modern age where civilization has fallen. She’s diligent, cool, and level-headed, as well as the group peacemaker, but her only flaw is that she suffers a little bit from chuunibyou syndrome.

An unidentifiable girl who lost her memory. She goes by Segami, or Segamin. Although she doesn’t remember anything outside her own name, for some reason she shows an uncommon tenacity in changing the history of the conflict between the goddesses and Sega Hard Girls. Although she has the spirit of a leader and is charismatic, she occasionally doesn’t listen to others when they talk, and bewilders her friends with ideas out of left field.

When I heard that Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory was getting the remake treatment in the form of a third Re;Birth game, I was curious to see how that would turn out. After all, part of the purpose of creating the remakes in the first place was to improve on the first two games by designing them with the game play mechanics of the third title. So when it came to recreating Neptune’s most recent canonical adventure in Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 3: V Generation, the game takes chances with tweaks to the game play mechanics, more plans to create, new story scenes, and larger environments. While it’s reassuring that the game is more than a copy paste job, not all of these updates are for the better.

Our return to Gamindustri is met with complete apathy from our CPU heroines. After enjoying years of peace after the events of the previous games, Neptune and the others have spent their time playing video games all day while neglecting their work, (which hits a little too close to home.) As word of restless citizens forming an organization that seeks to create a world without CPU’s spreads, Nep is finally forced to create some goodwill by getting off her butt and working for the people. As we’ve learned many times over however, work sucks, which is proven since Nep’s questing results in her getting transported to an alternate universe based on gaming in the late 80’s. Now stranded without her CPU powers, Planeptune’s goddess must help Plutia, this dimension’s constantly sleepy, (and secretly sadistic,) goddess of Planeptune, and the alternate versions of Noire, Blanc and Vert, while restoring her strength, fighting off the mysterious Seven Sages who look to rid Gamindustri of the goddesses, and building up enough energy to return home.

For those who thought the second game was had toned down the humor too much compared to the constantly lighthearted story of the first game, V Generation takes the narrative back to its roots along with its original protagonist. Rarely serious, the story serves as a parody of the game industry from the NES days, with bits and pieces of modern gaming mixed in. One of the highlights of the dialogue aside from the constant fourth wall breaking and gaming reverences galore, (does anyone else remember Fighting Vipers?), is to see how events such as the rise of Sony, the fall of Nintendo, and Xbox’s oversees struggles play out. These scenes are an interesting love letter to those who have been following the industry for so long, acting as a reward for playing in its own right. With that in mind, the experience would be even more enjoyable if more of it was voiced. It seemed like the dialogue here was only displayed through text more often than its predecessors, which was a bit disappointing.

Exploration is essentially the same as its always been, choosing which country you want to go to by selecting it on an overworld map. In addition to obtaining missions through the guild, shopping for items, or talking to the citizens of Gamindustri like in past games, a news based broadcast called the Nepstation debuts to break up the action at the start of every chapter. Usually delivering a humorous retelling of past events, selling bulk items, or offering in game trivia, I found this to be a small, yet memorable addition to the map. Once in a dungeon, the leader of the party plays an even larger role, with unlockable leader abilities that boost the whole party. Special challenges increase stats or award Plans as they are achieved as well, so actions like running or jumping a certain amount, attacking enemies in the field to initiate battles, or even accomplishments in battle like taking damage or landing a certain amount of hits all lead to these boosts, giving players an extra reason to rotate their party and its leaders.

Game play wise, battles are largely unchanged, but the way special attacks are handled was altered into a different beast,  resembling something more similar to what was featured in the original version of the second game. In this full range turn based battle system, characters move in real time while they position themselves to center as many enemies as they can in their attack range. Each weapon and ability has its own attack area, making positioning vital to achieving victory, (no pun intended.) Broken down into three types of attacks, Rush builds up the EX/SP meter faster with multi hit moves, (we’ll talk more about the meter soon,) Power does more damage, and Break weakens enemy shields, allowing more damage per hit when completely broken. Starting with three attacks for every turn, unlocking EX attacks that trigger based on how full your SP bar is, and using items to synthesize extra attack slots now give each character the opportunity to use five attacks each round.

While this all sounds almost exactly like the previous games, the biggest change comes with the removal of the EX meter and integrating it into the SP meter. In the past, the SP meter was used to pay for special attacks, and was replenished by attacking, using items or leaving the area to recover it in full. The EX meter on the other hand, was a separate bar that was shared by the party. It could only be filled by attacking, and could be used to allow EX attacks, (as mentioned above,) or pay for EXE Drives, ultimate abilities that served as the quickest way to defeat bosses. While this system was admittedly easy to exploit and abused to breeze through tough fights, the new system makes it much harder to do so.

While trying to strike a better balance is all well and good, I found that aspect to be the only advantage of the new, (old?), system. With the two meters combined, the SP meter is divided into four segments, which also act as the levels of the EX meter. Using EX attacks drains the meter, while each character gets their own instead of sharing it. Draining the bar at the wrong time will leave your characters stranded with their standard attacks while they rebuild their SP, so wasting it is a surefire way to crash and burn. The reason why this comes off as much more tedious is that leaving dungeons no longer replenishes the bar, forcing you to either use a ton of items, or grind out hits against weaker enemies until it fills. Considering how even transforming now costs a fifth of the bar on top of the EXE Drives and SP attack costs, you’ll find yourself spending more time than you want to fighting for the sake of having fully functional teammates again. But the absolute biggest flaw is that unlike past games, most of the single character EXE Drive attacks have to be unlocked, while the ones unlocked throughout the story are mostly double team moves. While powerful, these attacks use up 50% to 75% of the meter for BOTH characters, making half of your four person party essentially useless against bosses unless that attack was the finishing blow. Even if it is, guess what? More SP grinding!

Once you reach the late game chapters, you’ll be begging for the exploitable EX meter to return too, if for no other reason than to keep yourself from shattering your Vita in a blind rage. While Re;Birth 1 had its share of difficulty spikes, and Re;Birth 2 was a bit too easy for my tastes, this third game literally goes from one end of the spectrum to the other, sometimes in the same dungeon. There’s nothing more frustrating than blowing through all of the standard enemies in a dungeon with one turn KO’s, worried that you’re over-leveled, to getting one or two hit KO’d by bosses in those very same dungeons. I’m all for a challenge when it comes to my games, but I would also want it to build up over time. Re;Birth 3 doesn’t do this, making grinding, item hoarding, or blind luck a must to advance through the late game, a factor I didn’t encounter with its predecessors.

That’s not to say that Re;Birth 3 doesn’t have its fair share of improvements. Most prominently, the frame rate in battles and dungeon exploration has been improved to display a smooth, steady pace. Big attacks don’t chug along as noticably, and running through the maps are free of the slowdown that served as an annoyance in the prequels. Ironically, it’s with fixing another past complaint that the slowdown rears its ugly head again. Another long running issue is the amount of reused maps. While this game doesn’t do away with them, new dungeon designs constantly pop up while old ones are expanded with new or bigger rooms, with the ability to expand them further with the Remake system. In fact, while some are reskins, Re;Birth 3 contains more dungeons than any other games in the series by a large margin. However, when the bigger maps show up, so does the slowdown, biting off a bit more than the system can chew processing wise. The same is true with battles, since some feature many more enemies on screen at once. As you can probably guess, more enemies means more slowdown. That’s not to say we don’t appreciate the effort to expand the scope of Gamindustri, it’s just funny that these expansions undue the improvement to the more stable framerate.

Outside of these areas, Re;Birth 3 has also revamped some of its side content, including treasure hunting, creating plans, and the dreaded Stella’s Dungeon scout mini game. Instead of scanning the area for hidden items, each map hides at least one invisible Nep block. Mirroring the exploits of a certain plumber, hitting these blocks uncovers coins to buy items with, while weapons, armor or plans appear in rare instances.

Speaking of plans, there are so many more this time around, bringing the best out of the Remake System. Basically a form of synthesizing from other RPG’s, the Remake System creates everything from new weapons, items, armor, outfits and dungeons, to changing the menu voice, battle music, adding attacks, changing the difficulty, and unlocking solo EXE Drives amongst many other features. On top of the discs that can be burned to create custom perks for your character, and its clear how customizable this game can be, more so now than ever.

Lastly, the Stella mini game from Re;Birth 2 returns, but manages to actually be enjoyable rather than terrifying and tedious. By equipping her with her own armor, weapons and partners to boost her abilities, Stella now climbs the Neptral Tower as she collects items for the party and herself. If you send her farther than her abilities can sustain, she’ll be KO’d by monsters, losing her armor and partner along the way. What helps me maintain my sanity this time around is that good equipment is easily obtainable if you do lose, and partners are recovered in a snap as long as you can reach the floor they fainted on. But most importantly, each map only takes about an hour or two of real time to passively progress depending on how far you are, even in sleep mode. Unlike the dungeons that could take literally over a day at their worst, only to fail right at the end, I would eagerly turn on my Vita JUST to check on Stella’s progress. Considering how much the original was universally reviled, to the point where separate DLC was released to make it manageable, to say this change is for the better would be an understatement.

When my time with Re;Birth 3 drew to a close, I found myself with an enjoyable, more ambitious effort than the previous games, with some fundamental flaws that keep it from being as great as its predecessors. Victory players will appreciate the expanded story, new translation, improved plan system, new maps and bigger environments. Re;Birth newbies will still find the laugh out loud humor and addicting battle system intact with the third game, with further improvements to Stella’s Dungeon and treasure hunting. Unfortunately, difficulty spikes, a tedious change to the SP Meter, and a story that’s a bit drawn out hold it back. Still, this retro trip through an alternate Gamindustri is one worth taking, and continues Neptunia’s trend of being one of the best RPG series found on the Vita. Want a lighthearted, self aware romp through a video game about video games? You can’t go wrong with Nep! Now, bring on Victory II!

+ While some of the dungeons are still repeats, plenty of new maps compliment the old ones, which nearly received universal expansions.

+ Both the Remake and battle systems feature many more options, and are expanded in ways to keep them as addicting as ever. With that said…

– The new SP/EX Meter mechanic renders EXE Drives nearly useless, forcing unnecessary item or battle grinding to replenish.

– The later portion of the game suddenly spikes in difficulty and suffers from poor pacing.

– While bigger dungeons and more enemies on screen is appreciated, these areas are when slowdown rears its ugly head once again.

– The story drags, with no clear goal or progression from about the half way point through right before the end of the game. Not to mention the villains aren’t all that threatening.

Back in August, when Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment released for the PS Vita, it was generally agreed that the game was serviceable for fans of the popular anime and manga series, but its slow battle speed, grind heavy game play, and poor translation ultimately kept it from being as great as it could have been. With that in mind, Namco Bandai has gone back to the drawing board with Sword Art Online: Re Hollow Fragment, taking fan feedback to make an improved version of the game. Joining many other popular Vita exclusives and jumping ship to the PS4, our hands on time showed that in this case, the move to consoles is like night and day.

If you missed our review of the original game, Hollow Fragment picks up at the end of the first half of the anime, branching off into its own “what if” scenario as Kirito and his friends continue to climb the 100 floors of Aincrad. Still stuck within an MMORPG where players who die in the game die in real life, the group must fight to survive long enough to complete the game, which will set all of the survivors free.

With the ability to team up with characters from the show, (some of which haven’t appeared yet at this point in the story,) level up abilities and weapon skills and build relationships with those around you, each floor has its own set of challenges and bosses before you can proceed to the top. The second part of the game is the game exclusive Hollow Area, where the meat of the game lies. Here, players can explore its huge environments with a friend through co-op play, or pair up with another CPU teammate to tackle its challenges. Featuring over 100 hours of game play if you were to complete everything this massive game offers, that time is likely going to be cut down thanks to the sped up battles.

While playing, it was instantly noticeable how much faster the game moved. In what felt like it was close to twice the speed, each one of Kirito’s attacks took much less time to cast and execute. Considering the game plays similar to what you’d expect from KOTOR or the original Dragon Age, the real time turn based combat never felt plodding like it did before. Naturally, this change applied to your teammate as well, forcing you to stay on your toes with a larger sense of urgency, especially when taking the praise mechanic into account. Trying to send the appropriate message to your partner to boost their morale mid fight was as important as ever, while managing your aggro, skills and health to take down tough enemies.

Thankfully for us, the game play wasn’t the only feature to get a boost from the new hardware. After being reformatted for big screen HD gaming, the world of Sword Art looks much more vibrant with its brighter colors and smoother frame rate. While cycling through the battle banter, the new translation was immediately noticeable, replacing the awkward wording and sentence structure with something that resembles functional English! It’s obvious that the localization team and developers learned from our complaints of the original, which will hopefully leave us with a more enjoyable SAO experience.

From what we’ve seen so far, Sword Art Online: Re Hollow Fragment seems to improve on the Vita version in nearly every way. If you missed out on the original or want an excuse to run through the game again, this is looking like your best chance to experience the definitive version of the game. With a second game, Lost Song, also launching this year, it’s clear to see why this is a good time to be a Sword Art fan.

Look for both games for PS4, with Lost Song returning to the Vita this fall.

At Xseed’s booth on the E3 show floor, it was clear how hard they’re looking to push the Earth Defense Force series. As a title with a strong cult following in Japan, its handful of Western releases on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PS Vita filled a need for giant insect blasting, but with Earth Defense Force 2: Invaders From Planet Space on Vita, and Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair for PS4, it’s clear that the publisher is looking to push these games into the forefront of their line up. After spending some quality time with each game, it’s easy to see what all the excitement is about.

Starting with Earth Defense Force 2, this handheld title serves as a remake of what’s considered the game that established the series’ current game play mechanics. As a third person shooter with a wide variety of military grade, or sci-fi inspired weapons, players can choose their fully customizable soldiers, establishing their look and class before they go into battle. Ranging from the standard soldier, to explosive experts, and the thrilling Palewing, which adds a jet pack for flying over the battlefield, each set up forces you to approach missions differently.

But once you’re on the battlefield, the over-sized bugs that fill the cities can overwhelm you easily. Navigating the large, yet contained city was one of the highlights of my play through, being able to run through or fly over these buildings as you destroy dozens of alien insects. As the fights become more intense and buildings start to crumble, scrambling for health packs and power ups become just as vital as avoiding damage, since you’ll quickly get overwhelmed, even on normal difficulty. It’s hard to believe that higher difficulties exist, because surviving on the default settings was hard enough. If nothing else, we know we can expect a challenging and exciting shoot em up, using arcade inspired game play that’s perfect for on the go gaming.

When moving over to Earth Defense Force 4.1, most of what was great about the handheld version held true for this PS4 remake of the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the fourth game. With more weapons, improved graphics and a bigger city supported by even more enemies, the boost in the presentation was instantly apparent. After trying out a variety of weapons, my PS4 play through had me settle with a beam based sniper rifle combined with the Palewing class, raining down satisfying punishment on my mutated enemies. In fact, it wasn’t until my overzealous style led me to shooting into a building at point blank range, killing myself with my own blast!

As one of the biggest surprises for me on the floor, these Earth Defense Force games were some of the most fun I had with a game at E3. Their simple to pick up and play, no nonsense mechanics made it easy to just jump in and start going to town on giant monsters, while managing to be punishing if you aren’t careful. It’s easy to see why the series has the following it does!

With each game launching in the fall, we’re eager to see how both titles progress. Check back with us for more on Earth Defense Force, and the rest of the games of E3 as news becomes available.

With most of the major survival horror franchises either veering more towards action adventure, or completely dropping off the map, it’s good to see smaller franchises filling the void. Case in point: Corpse Party: Blood Drive, a Vita exclusive title that takes the concept to the extreme. Games like Clock Tower 3, Haunting Ground and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories were always some of my favorites, because in true horror movie fashion, you have nothing but your wits and the occasional tool to hold temporarily hold off enemies to ensure your survival.

First off, we should mention that Blood Drive is the final game in a trilogy, so if you never played the PSP games before this, you might want to do so to avoid being spoiled. With that said, as with most Japanese horror titles, Corpse Party puts you in the role of a Japanese school girl, fresh off the heels of the previous game. After being able to defeat their latest supernatural threat, it appears that peace has finally been achieved. It’s not long however, before this group of friends finds themselves trapped in a building while being pursued by a relentless monster, where even the environment is out to kill them. All with a cute, chibi inspired graphics style!

Not to be misled by its cute character models, Corpse Party is absolutely brutal. With a pitch black environment, your character has to rely on her flashlight to navigate the halls, which is vital considering stepping on glass, barbed wire, pulsating flesh, and holes in the floor will all cause damage when stepped on. Now with an unlimited battery that was not in the original Japanese version based on fan feedback, just because you’ll always have your light doesn’t mean you should use it. Being too overzealous can alert the monster that’s pursuing you, which is where the real fun begins.

When being chased, the only thing you can do to avoid being killed is to run for your life. Creating distance between the two of you is the only way to truly avoid the monster, but with so many traps along the way, it’s really easy to accidentally kill yourself in the process. If your pursuer does lose track of you, your character can hide in a cabinet until it gives up its search, but unlike most horror games, there are no holes in the door to peak through. The only way to know if the enemy is gone is to check your heartbeat, which increases as the monster draws closer. Once safe, retreating to, or finding a new save point will replenish the health you surely lost, making it safe to continue your progress… For now.

Considering I was at a crowded, loud E3 hall while playing, Corpse Party still managed to be incredibly tense, which is a testament to how creepy the game can be. Creating such a feeling of helplessness is something I’ve missed in more recent games, but I’m thrilled to see that Blood Drive is keeping it alive and well. Want to catch up with the series? Check the Playstation Store and get caught up with its prequels, then prepare for the final chapter in the Corpse Party story when it releases just in time for Halloween, on October 13th.

Due to how licensing works, it’s rare that we get the crazy anime crossovers that Japan plays fairly often. When J Stars Victory Vs. was released for the PS3 and Vita last year, it was one of those times that we were thankful that those systems are region free, since there was no way this game was coming to the West.

By some small miracle, the stars aligned to make J Stars Victory Vs. + a reality for us Western and European fans. Pitting the likes of Goku from Dragon Ball, Yu Yu Hakusho‘s Yusuke, and Naruto from, well… Naruto, some of Shonen Jump’s biggest heroes and villains clash in this 3D fighting game. As I’m not one to pass up witnessing a miracle in person, I got to check out a demo of the localized build at Namco Bandai’s E3 booth and find out how it’s coming along.

Taking place in a variety of iconic locations from each series, battles consisted of two on two matches with a third character acting as support. Having a full 3D space to fight in, players will have to take cover behind structures, keep an eye on their opponent and attack fast, since each character will have a variety of ways to take down their opponents. Being able to lock on and dash towards your target closes what can be a considerable distance between you and your enemies down quickly, and making sure to charge your energy to unleash weak, strong and area attacks were the biggest keys to victory, especially when this power can ultimately unveil each character’s transformed state. Including Goku’s Super Saiyan, Naruto’s Sage Mode, and Kenshin drawing his sword, new, more powerful abilities become unleashed, destroying your enemies, (and the environment,) in the process.

On the subject of victory, winning is achieved in a slightly different way in Jump compared to most fighters. Rather than simply KO both teammates, your pair of fighters fills their win gauge every time they defeat an enemy. Three victories result in a win, so one partner can lose all three times and blow it for their team. It’s a good thing single player hands you a CPU teammate to blame when things don’t go well, but you might want to apologize in advance to your friend if you lose during a co-op match.

With the final version featuring over 50 characters from over a dozen series’, any anime fan, and ESPECIALLY Shonen Jump enthusiasts will want to mark June 30th on their calendar. J Stars Victory Vs. + will be available for PS3, PS4, and PS Vita with online and offline play, an adventure mode that ties these worlds together, and an arcade mode that’s exclusive to this “plus” version! It may have taken three games, but when Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory released in 2012, it’s safe to say that the series finally hit its stride. So much so, that the game play improvements introduced would carry into remakes of the original titles, both of which were great additions to the PS Vita library when we reviewed them over the last few months. While there was plenty to improve on, I went into Re;Birth 3 a little conflicted. At this point, I’m completely absorbed in anything the series can offer, but does the game that the remakes are based off of need its own remake? What can be changed for V Generation to feel different?

Based on the time I spent with the E3 build, this version looks to be aiming for the definitive way to experience Neptune’s most recent adventure. Taking place in an alternate Gamindustri that’s based on the console wars of the early 90’s, past characters will look and act different while new ones, namely this alternate Planeptune’s CPU, Plutia. From a game play standpoint, small tweaks have been added to change up the way the game is approached. The returning Remake System will allow the party to add an extra attack slot into their list of commands after finding the appropriate plan for each, while finding treasure through scanning  the environment is replaced by an invisible question mark that Nep hits with her head. Added cutscenes, new scenarios, items to help progress in the Stella Dungeon scouting mini game from Re;Birth 2, the return of Victory‘s stat boosts for performing certain actions and other surprises round out all the new features, while the turn based combat system remains intact.

But more than anything, what’s immediately noticeable is the improved frame rate, which never skipped a beat during battle. While the previous remakes would be  bogged down with some harsh dips when the flashiest attacks would take place, the comparible moves that I  tried in the demo had no such issue. In addition to an upgraded interface with colorful effects during attacks, reworked menus and a rewritten script, it’s clear that the presentation went through as much polishing as the game play, which I can’t wait to experience with the full game!

So if anything, Re;Birth 3 feels less like a remake and more like a remastered version, adding in what worked about its prequels while improving on what didn’t. With the trilogy nearly complete on both the Vita and PC through Steam, there’s no excuse for when the next main sequel is finally released. Luckily for us, the Vita release is right around the corner, coming on June 30th! If you’ve listened to the Geekscape Games podcast, (the number one gaming podcast on the Geekscape Network,) over the last few weeks, you know that the Vita has no shortage of games that involve a combination of dating, waifu bait, and/or uncomfortably rubbing the characters while strangers judge you on public transit. Amnesia: Memories from Idea Factory, is an Otome title, (which literally translates to “girl game”,) that has all of these features, but reverses the roles. As a woman who has lost her memories due to mysterious circumstances, she must piece together her past by building relationships with the five men who were closest to her, but with an interesting twist that will surely help Amnesia stand out amongst the sea of visual novels and Japanese inspired games on the Vita.

Guided by Orion, a strange spirit that helps you on your quest, each scenario starts with selecting which boy you want to pursue. Treated as a type of separate dimension or universe from the other choices, the world is flipped around depending on what you choose. For example, if you decide to chase after one boy in their scenario, one of the other characters might become a co worker as opposed to someone you date.

As the story unfolds, you’re tasked with balancing out three different meters that measure your relationships. By keeping affection and trust at a stable level, it will almost ensure that your hidden past will come to light through your interactions. However, if your responses to the text veer too far out of character, your husbando will grow suspicious, which can lead to them figuring out that you lost your memories. While most logical people would use that as an opportunity to fill the person in right then and there, this apparently throws off your guy to the point where he’ll stop helping you, leading to a bad ending. Why this happens will vary from scenario to scenario, but if I was her, I would want to get amnesia too if it meant forgetting my poor choice in men.

All joking aside, the concept of bringing a multiverse into the dating sim genre is one that’s new to me. Then again, my experience in the genre is limited to what came to the West, and while I can woo a pigeon for days, men are something I have yet to conquer. Regardless, the concept of piecing together your past and learning alongside this character by combining the experiences of each scenario is one that I find very intriguing, especially when you consider that Amnesia promises more than 20 endings. I hope you grow attached, because at an estimated 3 hours per scenario, there will be lots of game to uncover here.

If all that text starts to wear you out, Amnesia also has a set of touch screen mini games to play with your beaus, the two of which featured were air hockey and rock paper scissors. Air hockey accurately recreates the real date experience, where either the boy lets the girl win, or he’s too drunk to have anything that resembles coordination. The CPU constantly scored on themselves when reacting to a well placed shot, but their defense is usually on point before you manage to get the puck passed them. Rock Paper Scissors on the other hand, manages to be slightly less straightforward in its approach by adding an attack and defend mechanic. If you win or lose the initial throw down, the first person to tap either attack or defend depending on the result gets rewarded. If successful, the attacker gets their point while the defender blocks their score and lives to fight another day. It’s an adorable distraction, but if you want to get down to business, you can just go into the viewer and rub each guy’s shirtless body while he tells you about it! This feature wasn’t available to try, but I was promised that it would be more romantic and less lewd than something you’d find in other titles of this nature. Not sure if the businessmen on the train will notice the difference though.

All in all, I’m always excited for when a developer can bring some new concepts to genres that remain relatively stagnant, so the multiverse mechanic of Amnesia leaves me wanting more. How did the girl lose her memories? Where does Orion come from? Why do the guys refuse to help her if they learn of her memory loss? There are so many questions and not enough answers, which is why I can’t wait to see how it unfolds when August rolls around. Who knows? Maybe this year’s top waifu won’t be a woman at all!

Sony’s been decidedly quiet about any announcements or games that they’ll be showcasing this year, so we can only hope it’s something BIG. By big, of course, we mean The Last Guardian, but, well, that’s probably not going to happen. What else could pop up? Definitely Morpheus, maybe that PS+ version of DriveClub we’ve been waiting for? Another (better) try at Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale (maybe with some actual stars), or that it’s-been-rumoured-forever-but-will-probably-never-happen Crash Bandicoot reboot? We can dream.

At least we know we’ll probably get a handful of HD remakes (though the rumoured FFVII remake, we’d be okay with)!

After an apparent leak late last week, Sony has confirmed that Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection will release for the Playstation 4 on October 7th, just in time for players to catch up before the 2016 release of Uncharted 4.

Delivering the single player campaigns of the critically acclaimed Uncharted games for the PS3, this remastered collection will launch around the time that U4 was expected to release before its dreaded delay. Remastered by Bluepoint Games, (the team behind the Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and God of War remasters amongst others,) the package is promising to deliver Nathan Drake’s past adventures in full 1080P at 60 FPS.

Those who purchase the game will receive access to the Uncharted 4 online beta, which is scheduled to launch by the end of the year, in addition to bonus weapons and skins for a physical pre-order, and a dynamic theme for your PS4 start up screen if you pre-order digitally.

I’m waiting for more information on this one before I pass full judgement, but my knee jerk reaction is that these HD remasters are getting a little out of control. With the online modes removed from 2 and 3 and only new trophies and The Last Of Us Remastered‘s famed camera mode to replace them, I’m struggling to find the value here. When you consider that the PS3 copies go for $5 each these days with their full feature set, I can’t imagine anyone needing this unless they completely passed on the previous Playstation generation. Hopefully the underrated Vita entry gets added to the set, or it launches at a budget price to make it more worth it, but hey! Maybe that’s just me.

Still, these are three excellent games that are worth checking out if you haven’t before. What are your thoughts on yet another HD remaster?

The planet Gamindustri has found peace due to the combined efforts of the CPU’s and the CPU candidates. The CPU candidates find themselves a little bored in this time of peace.  However, what to warriors do when there aren’t any bad guys to battle? One of the new features is a “Costume Break”. Your character’s outfits tear and rip from the heat of battle. Costume damage lowers your defense but increases your crit rate and EXE Drive Gage.

Get ready to experience the new installment in the Hyperdimesion series and prepare for battle! Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed will be released on May 19th, in North America, and May 22nd in Europe. It will be available exclusively on the Playstation Vita and will be compatible with PlayStation TV.

At this point, I feel like my Vita is a dedicated entryway into the world of Gamindustri. Considering that four different Hyperdimension Neptunia games have been released for the handheld in the last year, it’s easy to see why. Now that we’ve played not one, but two fantastic RPGs, dived into the strategy role playing realm, and even tried our hand at producing and managing their careers as singers, it’s about time the series took the action route. In Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed, (a strange name for a non-Wii U title,) Gamindustri meets Dynasty Warriors in an over the top, horde slaying beat em up with the CPU and CPU Candidates doing the thwomping. But how well does a traditionally turn based franchise cross over into the action genre?

Now that the world is at peace, what’s a goddess to do aside from play games all day? Unfortunately, gaming doesn’t make a compelling news story, so when game journalists, Famitsu and Dengekiko, are tasked with writing up stories on the lives of the CPU’s and their little sisters, a little encouragement pushes them towards getting off their lazy butts and completing a few quests. Or at least, that was the plan. But when quests suddenly start popping up at an alarming pace, the gaming goddesses are forced to take up their weapons once again and fight off the overwhelming amount of monsters that have appeared while finding out who’s behind the sudden influx of requests. If our two writers are able to get a great story in the process, then even better!

Hyperdimension Neptunia U features ten unique characters to play as, which naturally include the CPU’s, their little sisters, and the addition of Famitsu and Dengekiko. Each character has a set of unique, (although limited,) combos and special moves that are designed to harm waves of enemies at once, and vary from slow and powerful, long range, or fast with a high hit count. As missions progress, each character builds up experience, unlocks new equipment and discovers new special attacks to put even more pressure on the more difficult enemies. With the option of taking on these missions solo, or pairing two characters together, each one is varied enough to feel unique while still accomplishing the same tasks.

Keep in mind, on top of all of these options per character, the CPU’s wouldn’t be much without their HDD forms. These serve as a temporary transformation that boosts attack power while changing their combos completely, essentially feeling like separate characters. Making it incredibly easy to wipe out foot soldiers and bosses alike, despatching dozens of enemies at one time with your powerful, special attack right before the transformation ends is ridiculously badass, all of which is done without a hint of a frame rate dip. Naturally, you have to fight for that meter, which fills up for the idle partner while the player character defeats enemies. If theirs is full, the player character will get their fill. Switching is as easy as tapping the down button on the D-Pad, so managing the meter is one of the more strategic aspects of Neptunia U, especially when it comes to the end game content. If you’re more passive, you could always fill your meter by tearing your clothes to shreds… Wait, what?

Yep, as you probably know if you’re reading this review, (and if you didn’t, welcome to the madness!), as characters take damage, their clothes rip up until their so-called armor “breaks,” resulting in a brief mid-battle cutscene that shows the girls in suggestive positions in nothing but tattered duds and underwear. Story wise, in a desperate attempt to cover up, they transform into their HDD forms, which come with their own, handy outfits! In other words, you get instant access to their most powerful forms faster if you let their clothes rip. Considering this game is developed by Tamsoft, the designers behind most of the Senran Kagura games, it’s not really a surprise since that series has made wardrobe malfunctions famous in recent years. Still, there are few moments more uncomfortable than when you’re playing as one of the sisters, (especially the pre-teen Rom and Ram,) and their butts and chests jiggle in slow motion as the clothes fly off. With that said, the game offers unlockable costumes that don’t break, break easily, or are pre broken depending on player performance, so kudos to the developers for giving the player the choice to shape their own game play experience.

Speaking of the experience, we can’t ignore the dialogue. As expected from a Neptunia game, its personality and charm shine through both in and out of quests. It’s clear that a ton of care went into the character relationships, with unique chatter between almost every possible team. When not fighting to the death, special events expand on the personalities of everyone involved, which range from fourth wall breaking gaming commentary, balking at the absurdity of their clothes tearing, and even a “GamerGate” ethics in journalism quip! While not as laugh out loud funny as the main games, considering nearly every line is voiced with both Japanese and English voice options on an individual character basis, what’s provided is plenty when you take into account that this is an action game rather than an RPG. Either way, it’s still more than serviceable for the franchise faithful.

Despite how varied the mechanics and characters can be though, one major issue that most games of this nature encounter is its repetitiveness, and U is no exception. Each character’s move set is insanely stylish, but with only a few combos per character, you’ll see everything each one has to offer soon after picking them up. Not only that, but the game offers little incentive to experiment, leaving players to stick with the combo that works best for them, rinse and repeat. The main story mode never gets particularly challenging either, making its hundred-ish quests a breeze. Every once in a while, the game throws a curve ball at you, either by hiding objectives, asking you to collect items or hunt down a certain enemy, but at the end of the day, each one is accomplished by beating everything into submission.

Yet, U redeems itself in a big way when it comes to the post game content. After spending 12 hours or so completing all of the quests in the main story, a wealth of new missions and modes keep the fun going. If you think you’ll just be able to blow through these stages like you were able to in the campaign, think again. To survive, you’ll have to pick your attacks carefully, manage your meter better than ever, and know when its best to just quit the mission, store your earned EXP, and live to fight another day. In addition, an arena mode pits the CPU’s against each other in one on one battles that unlock powerful accessories, and a tower mode which sends two of the girls into a multi-tiered challenge where they must fight off increasingly powerful enemies. On top of collecting enemy medals, (coins that opponents drop at random once defeated and can be used to unlock stat boosts, weapons and accessories,) and boosting the group’s friendship, (or Lily Ranks,) for in game perks, and you have a game that will potentially last for much longer than expected. If I were to be extra critical, I would have liked it if the arena mode’s difficulty didn’t range from one hit kill, one hit death or a legitimate match, if it let you fight against other Vita owners, (assuming they exist,) and that collecting medals and boosting Lily Ranks wasn’t such a grind-fest, but these issues don’t detract from the experience too much. Besides, what kind of Neptunia game would this be if it didn’t have insane trophy grinding?

Most impressively, Hyperdimension Neptunia U has become a game that I just can’t put down. Perfect for the portable experience, the quests, bonus content and grinding feel tailor made to be played in short bursts. That’s not to say that I haven’t had hours long sessions, (and I’ve had many,) but with as fun, colorful and fast paced the action turned out, it’s no wonder that the addiction has set in. If you love Neptune and friends in all of their self-referential glory, then this is a no-brainer. If you’re a beat em up fan who desperately needs something to play on the Vita, then U is more than a worthy purchase. While the anime inspired style, its repetitive nature, and the whole clothes tearing thing might not be everyone’s cup of tea, you might just be surprised with how endearing this game can be. Try it, you’ll be glad you did!

+ A lengthy campaign filled with a plethora of quests, unlockable items and game industry satire.

+ Post game content improves the game a great deal, adding modes and missions that make you re-think the game.

+ The same tongue in cheek script that we’ve come to expect from the series, complete with dual language options for individual characters.

+ The clothes tearing option adds to the strategy while being entirely optional.  

– Combat becomes repetitive with only a few attack sets per character. The twenty characters, (including their HDD forms,) doesn’t alieviate it enough, and is only amplified by most of the objectives revolving around killing everything in sight.

– Some unlockables are absurdly grind heavy, artificially extending the replay value with enemies that give few rewards and a slow moving Lily Rank mechanic.

– While fun for what it is, the arena mode is a missed opportunity, with wildly unbalanced difficulty settings and the lack of a PvP versus mode.

If so, I don’t have to tell you that these will go fast, so unless you want your life to be full of regret as you watch prices rise on eBay, I’d say you need to jump on this. In the meantime, watch out for more information on this SRPG spinoff as the release draws nearer.

Noire

Gamindustri is on the brink of collapse. The four goddesses that serve as this land’s protectors have been defeated by the ASIC, an evil organization that has grown in power by securing their shares using pirated gaming software. The last CPU standing to face this threat is powerless to stop them, forcing her to flee as her sister and friends remain captured for the next three years. Pretty dark, huh? It’s probably the last thing you would expect from the sequel to one of the surprise highlights of 2014, primarily because of its cheery, often silly take on the video game industry. Yet, in many ways, Hyperdimension Neptunia: Re;Birth 2 creates a completely different tone, sacrificing some of this over the top humor for a more serious take on these characters that took me by surprise last year. With so much of the original’s charm relying on its unique premise and script though, can the world of Neptunia thrive without it?

Re;Birth 2 places gamers in the very capable knee socks of Nepgear, the little sister of the original’s hyperactive protagonist. In comparison, Ge-Ge is much more mature, (despite being the “little” sister,) taking her duties as a CPU Candidate, (or the next Goddess in line to rule her home of Planeptune,) very seriously. Even still, her insecurities shine through most of the story, often worrying about escaping her sister’s shadow, while regaining the confidence it will take to save the goddesses that were so soundly defeated. With familiar faces such as IF and Compa from the original lending a hand, a huge cast of party members both new and old, and the addition of the other three CPU Candidates in the form of Lastation’s Uni and Lowee’s Rom and Ram fighting to save their siblings however, and the fight for Gamindustri’s future seems a lot less hopeless.

Or at least, that’s until you start playing, because the opening hours of Re;Birth 2 can be absolutely brutal. Making a complete 180 compared to its predecessor, which eased us into its fights before spiking about half way through, the sequel doesn’t play around. I came this close to losing the first tutorial boss fight, having to actually use strategy, items and stat boosts to eek out a win. Who would have thought!? Oddly enough, experience points start rising through the roof while fights get easier as the game progresses, making the experience more of a breeze as you push through the hazing of the early moments. You have to prove you really want it!

Either way, it becomes less of an issue when battles are not only a blast to play, but when the game can be customized to fit your play style! In our review of the original, we went into detail about the real time battle system and the Remake System, which allowed players to customize their game play experience if they had the items needed to unlock them, (give it a read, here!) In short, each character, weapon and attack has a certain attack range and a radius in which they can be moved. Every enemy that falls into that range can be hit with one of four types of attacks, which include special attacks, power attacks, break attacks, (that lower enemy shields,) and rush attacks, (multi hit attacks that build up the EX Meter, which adds bonus and signature abilities.)What makes battle even more fun this time around, (aside from the increase from three party members on the field to four,) is that more of the team wields a wider variety of attack types, namely Uni, Rom and Ram being able to attack at long range. To top it off, when late game abilities become available, these jaw dropping sequences range from badass action sequences, to some exciting attacks that reference some of our favorite niche games. It’s just too bad that the game can’t often keep up with this much awesome, causing the framerate to drop to a crawl when things get especially hectic.

If using these abilities makes the game too easy, or if that newest boss is just too hard to beat. Remaking the game can adjust the difficulty, unlock new items, dungeons and weapons, or even change mechanics like reducing the amount of time it takes to build up the EX Meter. As a far cry from the PS3 version that this title is based on, both mechanics are what holds the core of the game together, helping game stay addicting throughout its 25 hour plus story on a first run.

Still, even though all of these features are great, they’re way too familiar. Oddly enough, it seems like Nepgear’s primary flaw is trying to be too much like her sister! Re;Birth 2‘s biggest sin is the absurdly large amount of reused content it took from the first game. Enemies, some music, whole environments and many of the voice clips are completely ripped from the first title, (with some dungeons even being duplicates from THIS game,) oftentimes making the latest in the series feel more like an expansion than a sequel. The point and click map is mostly unchanged, complete with NPCs who you choose to talk to on a menu. While often serving as humorous takes on popular game characters, (Snake Hayter, Maryo and Monobear come to mind,) talking to them on a map screen isn’t the same as meeting them in a full fledged environment. While I appreciated the streamlined nature of these interactions originally, I’ve fallen in love with Gamindustri so much, that I wish I could delve into it outside of the various dungeons.

In the end though, what I thought would be this game’s biggest weakness became my absolute favorite part of it. Yes, Neptune is a fantastic protagonist, so much so that I named her the number 2 waifu of 2014 thanks to her off the wall, self aware, airhead personality. When I saw Nepgear as such a serious straight shooter, I expected the game to be less enjoyable because of it. As the game went on however, I became really attached to the little sisters, making their journey from scared, lonely sidekicks, to powerful, confident and heroic goddesses. Be warned, the slapstick and fan service is kept to a bare minimum, (the latter of which was more overbearing and unnecessary than anything else if you ask me,) but what what we got in its place was an exhilarating story to experience, introducing a level of character development that was nearly non-existent when Neptune took the lead. Now, I have trouble imagining another game without Nepgear in the lead. Sadly, I’m fully aware that this will likely be the case going forward. Still, for every serious moment, you have characters like Broccoli healing her team by vomiting a smiling pile from her eyes, so there’s that.

I can talk all day about everything that I love about Hyperdimension Neptunia: Re;Birth 2, but we only have so much bandwidth. What I will say, is that this sequel expands on the hilarious, yet mostly shallow narrative of the first game, creating a much deeper story that tackles themes such as coming of age, finding one’s own identity, and even video game piracy in a fun, lighthearted way. Features like the Stella Dungeon, where you send the titular character out to explore areas in real time in order to uncover special items, over a half a dozen endings, a new game plus feature and a variety of secret characters put the title over the top, and by all accounts, is a superior game to the original. Sadly, the technical issues and the overabundance of recycled content hurt the final impression, but not enough to keep Re;Birth 2 from being the best game of 2015 so far. Sure, it’s the first game I’ve played in 2015, but forget semantics, because Nepgear and the girls are starting the year off strong.

tl;dr

+ The CPU Candidates take center stage in a bigger way, with more party members, teammates on the field, and a huge amount of post game content.

+ Combat is as addicting as ever, with jaw dropping abilities that will keep you coming back.

+ A game that can be catered to your needs, thanks to the flexible Remake System.

+ A much more in depth story that sacrifices some humor for character development while still staying lighthearted, most of which is voiced in dual audio.

Way too much of the content is ripped straight from its prequel, some of which is repeated multiple times within THIS game.

Technical issues range in severity, from lips not moving during dialogue sections to massive slowdown during huge sequences.

While more streamlined, it’s about time we replace the point and click map with a fully explorable Gamindustri.

Being Vice President of the world sounds like it would be a pretty sweet gig. Everyone has to do what you say, you can boss everyone around, and it would make you the most powerful person on the planet (aside from the President, of course.) But between all the unearned vacations, publicity events and empty promises, you just might have to work on occasion, especially when it comes to saving the planet that elected you.

Citizens of Earth does just this, putting players in control of the newly elected VP in a turn based RPG seeped in classic gaming roots. During his first vacation, (the day after he was elected,) the bane of the Western world in the form of protesters show up at his door. After getting his mother and brother to get rid of them, it’s clear that there’s more going on than simple political discourse. When stop signs, coffee machines, and bears made of honey come to life and begin attacking the adoring public, it’s up to the honorable vice leader to set things right.

As someone of such high importance however, you can’t expect him to get his hands dirty when it comes to the actual Earth defending, which is where the loyal citizens come in. Using his expert campaigning skills, up to 40 different characters can be recruited, each with unique jobs, skills and combat abilities that help in and outside of battle. While simple, the turn based battle system finds a unique way to put these skills to good use. Using three party members at a time to fight, each has two basic attack types. Standard attacks can be performed without penalty, while building up one point of energy needed for special moves. These special moves need a certain amount of energy to initiate, but when they typically deal out huge damage, status effects, or healing bonuses for your team, it’s clear that the cost is well worth it.

Aside from the energy system though, this might sound like your typical RPG conventions that have been done to death for close to three decades. What makes Citizens of Earth stand out that makes it a must play for a long time role playing aficionado? For starters, each member gives bonus stats to whoever they’re fighting with. Adding depth to the level system, each character can be customized to a degree by having the right team members with them to fit the stat you want to raise.

In addition, the experience earned unlocks more than just stat points and new attacks. EXP earned in battle also goes towards upgrading the citizen’s talent, often related to their day job. If you recruit the baker for example, his shop will have better healing items as he becomes stronger. The pilot can teleport you to a larger variety of areas. The cop gives you extra bounties to hunt. Get the picture? When you consider that there are 40 citizens to level, part of the fun is seeing how their abilities can help you both in and out of combat.

Such a daunting task sounds like it can be overwhelming, and honestly, it was at first. It’s disheartening seeing your current party level up so high, then try to switch them out, only to have the newbies be too weak to compete. As the game progresses though, this problem becomes alleviated thanks to a few lenient features the game has included. First, the VP can restart a battle and change up the party, allowing him to throw in a strong party member to help boost the weaker ones. Second, KO’d party members still gain EXP, so having to scramble for your revive items isn’t as important, especially when they gain all of their health upon leveling up. Lastly, once the Teacher is recruited, unused party members can be put into class, leveling them up over time. It still can be a little more time consuming than I would have liked, but it’s also completely optional.

Aside from the game play, Citizens of Earth stands out even more with its unique presentation. Its humor, off the wall enemies, (smiling cops? Bubble Bees? Stop Vines?), and 2D navigation with enemies on the map are highly reminiscent of Earthbound, which is completed by a nearly fully voiced script and a political cartoon inspired art style. The only thing more charming than the hammy delivery of everything the VP does, is the bright, vibrant world filled with on screen enemies, (that can be ambushed and instantly killed if you’re strong enough,) potential party members and NPCs that bring the world to life. If nothing else, this title will surely make you smile across its story mode.

Yet, its biggest shortcoming brings it down pretty hard, which is the overall speed of the game. My enthusiasm to compete the adventure took a dive after experiencing how slow everything moves. Battles take a long time to start, which isn’t helped by enemies that either absorb attacks, constantly call for reinforcements, or completely heal, making me dread fighting certain enemies. Imagine fighting basic enemies for close to 10 minutes because you want your weaker teammates to level up, but the enemy keeps healing when on the verge of death? Making the campaign sour even more are the constant load times, slowing the game to a crawl. When entering buildings begins to feel tedious, it becomes an obvious issue.

Yes, Citizens of Earth won’t reinvent the wheel, but that’s not what it’s trying to do. Serving as a delightful throwback to some of the greatest RPGs of yesteryear, it does enough to inject its own style, personality and unique mechanics to make it stand out to even the most jaded gamer. Even still, the slow pace of the fights, their generally basic mechanics, and constant loading times cause the VP to fall from grace. Even still, if you’re in need of an old school RPG with modern sensibilities, you can’t go wrong with this ticket.

Placing Noire in her first starring role, would-be goddesses will be tasked with amassing a CPU army, creating bonds with teammates, customizing items to fit their playstyle and customizing their home between hard fought conflicts. As the first in the Hyperdimension Neptunia series to step into the world of Strategy RPGs, it’s sure to have plenty of surprises for new and old players alike when it arrives on the Vita in 2015.

At the Playstation Experience, Double Fine announced that the legendary adventure title will arrive on Playstation 4, Playstation Vita, PC, Mac and Linux on January 27th! For nostalgic gamers who want to revisit the classic, or gamers like myself who have never been part of the PC Master Race and couldn’t play it when it was brand spanking new, it’s great to finally know when we’re going to be able to experience the title!

In addition, Double Fine released details on a few more titles that are on the way, including:

Broken Age: Coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita alongside our Act 2 PC release next year.

I’ll be honest, I never really understood the hype surrounding Hatsune Miku and the Vocaloid craze. For the uninitiated, Miku and her friends are virtual pop stars who literally go on tours, perform live concerts and release albums with their singing voice completely made through computerized sounds after taking audio samples from a real person. Basically, they’re made completely out of autotune combined with Coachella Tupac.

But while I never found myself getting into the fandom as a whole, I would never let that get in the way of a great rhythm game, which the Miku series of games tends to bring. The latest entry, Hatsune Miku: Project Diva f 2nd, looks to continue that trend, with more songs, more unlockables and more Miku that ever before. Sadly, with the large range of content comes many of the issues that held down its predecessor, delivering a fun title that never strays from its expected path, for better and for worse.

In Project Diva f 2nd, players are thrown onto center stage as either Miku herself, or nearly half a dozen other character modules, including Kagamine Rin, her brother, Len, and Megurine Luka, each with their own songs and voices across the 40 in game tracks. Featuring a mix of both new songs and returning favorites with reworked button charts, there will be plenty of high energy toe tappers and even a few slow jams to build up your score with. Unfortunately, if you’re eager to dive into what Project Diva has to offer, the game forces you to be patient, only starting you with about five songs, with each new one unlocking as you complete what’s available. Even then, I found the soundtrack overall to be less impressive than the first game, finding myself rarely humming the tracks after the game was off, (except for the tutorial song, damn it! That thing had to have been made by the devil).

Throughout each song, prompts will have would be pop stars pressing one of the four face buttons or swiping the touch screen in time with the music. Patterns become more complex as the songs increase in difficulty, but again, Hard and Extreme are locked, forcing a false sense of replayability, especially for series veterans who will blow through the default settings. Starting with Normal only uses two buttons and the touch pad for example, while increasing the mode of play brings in the whole controller. Mix that in with double swipes and taps, (where a direction and button or a two finger swipe is needed to score), and you end up with a straightforward, yet fairly complex and highly rewarding play style.

Adding a little depth to the regular going ons of each song are two Technical Zones and one Chance Time section, each of which will help you boost your rank. Technical challenges you to hit a certain amount of notes in particular sections without missing, while chance builds up a meter that offers huge bonuses for those who can fill it, while hitting the final note in the sequence. Whether trying for the highest ranks, or inching to survive a tough song, (since you can still fail a song even if you make it to the end if your score is too low), these sections can both help or hinder you. Trust me, there are few things more annoying than almost getting a perfect run, only to miss the highest rank because the handful of notes that you missed were in the technical section, especially on Hard and Extreme.

That’s not to say that higher modes of play aren’t fun. In fact, they’re the highlight of the game! But as the fun increases on higher settings, so does the frustration. My biggest complaint with the first game in the series was its interface, placing the button prompts all over the screen while icons fly all across the screen. As the amount of inputs increase, so does the confusion, cluttering up the screen with images that are nearly impossible to follow along with unless you already know the song by heart ahead of time. Even then, when the game tries to get cute and make patterns with the icons, multiple inputs in the same prompt, or alternating buttons, it makes the rhythm sections both frustrating and hard to follow. There’s nothing worse than losing a perfect combo because you can’t make sense of all the triangles and circles flying at you. Worse of all, is that taking your fingers off the buttons to swipe the screen is counter-intuitive, often leading me to many a miss. Thankfully, the options allow Vita players to switch to the PS3 play style and handle those beats with the analog stick instead.

If the confusing note charts are particularly jarring, take the game to Edit Mode and see if you can do any better! With the ability to create custom button arrangements, these creations can be made, shared and downloaded online, potentially creating an endless stream of remixes from the community. As if the insane amount of in game achievements and items weren’t enough, editing and downloading can keep you playing long after the main game has worn thin.

(NOTE: Edit Mode was unavailable at the time of review, but is essentially the same as the first game. This review will be amended if we find any major changes.)

When you need a break from the onslaught of the Rhythm Game, players can explore Miku’s Room. Here, you can watch her read, eat, sleep, and go about her daily life in its voyeuristic glory. When you want to go a little more hands on with her day to day, you can pet her and give her food and water. Sadly, there’s no option to walk her or play frisbee, but you CAN use your hard earned Diva Points to buy new outfits, accessories, gadgets and furniture for her, or any of the other Modules, all of which have their own rooms and petting needs. A little creepy? Sure! But this is firmly a Japanese title, so would you expect anything less?

Speaking of the Japanese, f 2nd has a pretty awesome feature for the hardcore fans who imported the title, allowing them to do a one time save transfer. I personally can’t think of a game that has allowed that before,showing that Sega really knows that their hardcore Miku fanbase wouldn’t wait for the localized one. It’s great knowing that they have them in mind while localizing a game that many would consider to be a hard sell anyway.

So despite its issues going largely unchanged, Hatsune Miku: Project Diva f 2nd still manages to be an addicting, rewarding and content filled package that will keep fans playing for a long time. With so many items to buy and unlock, harder difficulties that will push you to get better, and a mostly solid soundtrack, it’s hard to ask for more from a rhythm game on the go. Sure, the interface could use a much needed overhaul, more of the game should be available from the start, and Divas Room can be made far less creepy, but in the end, Project Diva f 2nd is a solid buy for the Vocaloid and the rhythm lovers alike.

What’s the next step in the process of making a successful anime about a video game? Obviously, you would make a video game about it! Sword Art Online has built up a large following by engrossing anime fans in an MMORPG where death in the game means death in real life. But with bringing the series into a real video game, the challenge is to create the same feeling while keeping the game fun. In many ways, Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment succeeds, simulating a massive multiplayer experience with single player in mind. In this sense, it succeeds, for better and for worse.

Thrust into the world of the anime, Hollow Fragment takes place at the conclusion of episode 15 of the anime, (so you should AT LEAST watch that for unless you’re immune to spoilers). After clearing the 75th floor of the 100 stage tower of Aincrad, the lead character, Kirito, triggers a glitch in the system that locks away the previous floors, forcing the survivors up to this point to keep climbing to the 100th floor, hoping that the deadly game will finally come to an end.

Acting as a “what-if” scenario that pushes the story past the original events of the series, fans of the anime will be pleased to be able to explore the floors beyond 75. Playing as Kirito, you’ll be able to customize his appearance, voice and name to your liking, (the latter option only being available in the beginning), but that won’t stop everyone in the world from calling you by his original name, making the creation tool somewhat of an empty gesture.

Accompanying you on your quests are nearly every female from the anime and manga, (and Klein). Being able to adventure with the likes of Asuna, Silica and Lisbeth is sure to get that fanboy/fangirl side giggling. Even characters who are supposed to appear later in the timeline such as Leafa and Sinon there way in here, because “what-if” is another way of saying, “screw continuity”.

After agreeing to partner up in the HUB world of Arc Sophia, the world is yours to do what you want with. Did you want to spend that three million plus COL that you start with on some new armor or weapons? Go for it! Maybe buy a present for your party member? Knock yourself out! Want to go on an awkward date by leading them to specific parts of the map? Umm… Sure! In this strange mini game, these “dates” consist of the tried and true technique of pretending to listen and agreeing when necessary. With the only social options available consisting of agreeing or disagreeing, is it any wonder how Kirito has so many admirers? Your cool indifference can even lead to you “sharing a bed” with your partner of choice. Did we mention he’s married?

Once your gear is set and you decide on whatever waifu you want to bring on your adventure, your two person party begins taking quests, exploring the floors and fighting through dungeons before reaching the boss. Like what you would expect from a real MMO, some of these missions include killing a certain amount of monsters, collecting items or defeating sub bosses. At times, your in game friends list will send out requests to help them level up or defeat tough enemies, boosting them and yourself in the process.

On that subject, team building is important in the world of SAO. The battle system revolves around the use of an agro system, where enemies only focus on one person at a time. Manipulating this system is the key to victory in Hollow Fragment, since different actions affect their attention in different ways. Primarily, you’ll be able to replace your slow paced auto attack, which builds no agro, (or “Risk”, in this case), with a burst attack. Burst triggers stronger versions of the standard auto combos at will, rewarding the player with boosted damage output and even an extended time frame to use the ability if attacks are timed right. However, the lower the Burst Meter drops, the less damage it does, eventually leading to the loss of your dodge ability. When considering that boost attacking quickly maxes out your Risk, switching with your AI partner to take the heat off is a must, making it especially important to keep their strength up for those hard fought boss battles.

Outside of standard attacks, Kirito can switch between sword abilities that do heavy damage, abilities that boost party members or weaken foes, or issue commands to his teammate. The unique atmosphere of the MMO experience comes fully into play here, where praising your partner, issuing team attacks and answering their requests lead to various buffs during battle. And much like the show, after discovering a boss room, special missions that focus on gathering information on defeating it or strengthening your in game guild’s power must be completed to give your party a fighting chance. You don’t want to carry the guilt of all those dead players on your heart, do you?

But what if you want a break from climbing the floors of Aincrad and just want to kill stuff? That’s where the Hollow Area comes in. Acting as a separate section of the SAO world, this unbelievably large world features a slew of extra missions, powerful monsters and exclusive loot to carry back into the main game. Featuring the option to play with up to four real life friends locally, an already huge game becomes so much bigger thanks to this expanded land. But if you have trouble finding friends with SAO, friends with Vitas, or just friends in general, you can always team up with Philia, a new character with mysterious ties to the new land.

Reading this, it’s clear that there is an insane amount of mechanics to explore, relationships to build, and space to explore. Yet, while it does a great job of creating the feeling of a limitless MMO world, it doesn’t translate as well when the real game is focused on single player. Primarily, accomplishing even the smallest task takes an absurdly long amount of time. This might be great for a real online game that is supposed to last for years, (all while sapping your monthly fee from your wallet), but when playing in a simulation of a social game, it essentially just breaks down to you grinding for hours to gain the smallest amount of strength.

This isn’t helped by the fact that the game literally wants you to be Kirito. With that, comes a character who is already far advanced in level, money and sword skill, making level grinding even more of a pain when every enemy starts off 20 or so levels under him. But what if you want to use a rapier, a dagger or a two handed sword as your primary weapon? Well, then it’s back to square one, forcing players to take level grinding to a whole new level with weapon skill grinding. Be prepared to be taken to the brink of death against dangerous foes like a giant bee, a wild boar and the dreaded snail, because your new weapon will be weak. It will miss A LOT. And in some cases, it won’t have any skills unless you’re willing to grind out a few hours to build up skill points.

All of these problems could have been aliviated if we were allowed to create our own character, at least in the Hollow Area, which is completely seperate from the main narritive. If we were allowed to create our own guy, (or girl, which isn’t possible here), and start from scratch, maybe even fight WITH Kirito and friends instead of AS Kirito, then this could have really been our experience. Instead, we have a situation where I felt like I was picking up in the middle of someone else’s game, having to go out of my way to ignore the stronger, pre-established skills that the previous player upgraded. In a game that’s looking to simulate a customizable RPG, there’s no excuse for this.

Sword

Aside from these issues, other nagging problems include the pace of the battle system, the graphics, and the poor translation. Sword Art Online is a fast paced affair on TV, but while the game lets you stack abilities for quick attacks and dodging, it’s still slower than you’d expect considering the source material. Visually, most of the environments look bland, with characters that lack detail outside of the gorgeous 3D cutscenes. Aside from the Hollow Area, the title is actually a Vita port of a PSP release, and it definitely shows. And lastly, while the text gave me some incredible gems like “annoying makes people hated”, and “… lack supporting evidences”, it’s technically not a good thing that the text is filled with so many errors. On the plus side, I never knew that a slash, (as in “/”), could replace alphanumeric symbols.

Yet, despite its flaws, I still had a ton of fun playing Hollow Fragment. Being able to tackle huge boss fights, party up with my favorite characters from the show, and even explore new areas with my friends while my character gets progressively stronger is incredibly rewarding. It’s just too bad that it tries to be too many things to too many people, making it ultimately falter. Not quite MMO, but not quite single player. Not quite anime adaptation, but not quite a standalone experience. Not quite a turn based RPG, but not quite an action RPG. It’s good at what it sets out to do, but is great at none of them, with numerous flaws, keeping SAO from becoming the next must own Vita game. With that said, if you’re a fan of the series, loot grinding, or hundred plus hour RPGs, you can’t go wrong with Sword Art Online.

TL;DR

+ A huge world to explore with countless hours of content.

+ Rewarding boss fights

+ A sense of community with the game’s NPC’s, making you feel invested in their progress.

+ More customizable abilities, techniques and attacks than you’ll know what to do with.

+ A fun, fast-ish paced battle system that rewards team based actions, but…

– It’s still too slow for the action RPG mechanics it tries to impliment.

– Being unable to create your own character rather than a customizable Kirito undermines the customization factor.

– The game seemingly punishes you for wanting to fight with anything other than the signature dual swords.

– Dated graphics and a poor localization job hurt the overall presentation.

– An game based on an online game with no online. Good luck finding local friends with the game and a Vita.

NIS America has released more details on the upcoming release of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Dispair, complete with a brand new trailer for us to sink our claws into. Which of course means that it won’t be much longer before I can safely tread the Internet again without the fear of spoilers.
Picking back up a few years after the original title with a new cast of “ultimate” students, the group is on a field trip to a tropical island. However, this ticket to paradise quickly becomes a refresher course in the art of despair once Monokuma, the sadistic teddy bear from the original, returns to trap them all while isolated from society. The only way to escape? By getting away with murder.
Danganronpa 2 is technically a Vita remake of a Japan only PSP title, though like the first Danganronpa, this will be the first time that we’ll get the chance to play a localized version. Based on the trailer, class trials, investigations and the English voice cast will all return, which isn’t too unexpected. But the question remains… why is former rival, Byakuya Togami, trapped again, and why is he so fat?
The first game was released in February of this year, which was so good that I’d have to say that its dark premise, blend of genres and the way it so easily played with your emotions makes it an early contender for my game of the year. September is a long way away, which is plenty of time for Vita owners to get caught up, lest you risk yourself falling into ultimate despair come September 5th! Sony’s 2014 press conference is live at 6:00pm, and we’re here at E3 to tell you everything the company has coming.

Sony’s been decidedly quiet about any announcements or games that they’ll be showcasing this year, so we can only hope it’s something BIG. By big, of course, we mean The Last Guardian. What else could pop up? DriveClub for sure, but what about another (better) try at Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale (maybe with some actual stars), or that it’s-been-rumoured-forever-but-will-probably-never-happen Crash Bandicoot reboot? We can dream. Plus, maybe the Vita will get a price drop (though maybe they should kill it off completely)?

It seems like Atlus is making these Persona teases a regular thing, although every announcement can’t be as awesome as a Persona 5 announcement.

The publisher has announced an anime version of its hit Vita game, Persona 4 Golden, the enhanced port of the PS2 classic. Retelling the story of a high schooler who arrives in a small town, only to be caught up in a supernatural murder mystery, the anime will include the additional scenes featuring Marie, a new character who was added specifically for the Vita version.

The confusing part in all of this though, is that there’s already a Persona 4 anime. Golden‘s story is exactly the same aside from Marie and a few other minor scenes, (many of which are optional), so I wonder how this is supposed to play out. Is this an anime of an anime? Will it run redone episodes, or will they just blend the new content into the old episodes? Or maybe this won’t be a series at all, and will only be a movie or OVA.

Either way, as much of a fan as I am, I see this as completely unnecessary. With that said, we shouldn’t be surprised. With another fighting game, a dance game and a chibi-fied spinoff, the fourth game is everywhere these days.

Briefly: It was announced back in February that Sony’s slimmer, lighter Vita 2000 would be making its way to North America in the Spring, and now we know just when you’ll be able to get your hands on one.

Sony revealed today that the Borderlands 2 PS Vita bundle will launch in stores on May 6th (while the standalone game will launch on May 13th).

The bundle includes a black Vita 2000, a copy of Borderlands 2, and an 8Gb memory card all for $199.99.

Again, the new Vita 2000 is about 20% thinner and 15% lighter than the previous model, and also has 1Gb of built-in memory (up from nothing). It gets about an hour of extra battery life too (which it desperately needed). The only downside? It uses a standard LCD over the gorgeous OLED from the original model (which is apparently not a huge deal as those who have used both units).

Demon Gaze, the upcoming dungeon crawling RPG for the Playstation Vita, is looking to get an underworld makeover courtesy of a free Disgaea DLC pack!

For the first month of release, Vita owners will be able to add Disgaea themed party member outfits. Featuring costumes based off of Etna, Flonne, Sicily, Asagi, (who is STILL waiting to get her own game), and of course, Prinny, it’ll be great to see the iconic characters get a nod when Demon Gaze releases on April 22nd.

Do you love Final Fantasy? Will you happen to be in the Southern California area on March 15th? If so, that will be a day you DO NOT want to miss.

Square Enix will be holding a launch event for the upcoming Final Fantasy X/X-2 Remaster at Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra, California. Copies of Limited Edition, Vita version AND the formerly online only Collectors Edition will be on hand for the lucky fans who get to attend. The better news? Attendees will get a chance to meet Yoshinori Kitase and Yusuke Naora, the Producer and Art Director of the game.

If you’re planning on going, make sure to get there early! The event runs from 2PM to 8PM, but Square Enix fans are ravenous, so you’ll want to make sure to plan accordingly. Oh, did I mention the first 200 games sold will be autographed while the first 300 will get an exclusive art print? Sleep is overrated anyway.
