Today we get our first look at The Superior Spider-Man. The relaunched series will be replacing The Amazing Spider-Man after issue #700 hits stands. Whatever happens in that final issue, which is said to be major, will result in a very new and different direction for Peter Parker, that is being described as “a far darker Spider-Man than fans have ever seen.”

Writer Dan Slott commented on the new direction:

“The one thing that does not go with this Spider-Man is the term ‘Friendly neighborhood. I’ve always been the omniscient hand that’s been protecting Peter Parker and Spider-Man, and not letting anything too bad happen to him. And now I’ve become this cruel god. There’s something exciting about that, about going, ‘Mwah-ha-ha-ha-ha, here is what’s going to happen to you, Spider-Man!’ And it’s drastic and it’s big and it’s exciting and it’s never been done before.”

Artists Humberto Ramos, Giuseppe Camuncoli, and Ryan Stegman will be taking on art duties for the first three-issue arc, “Hero Or Menace”.

Next January, Uncanny X-Force is getting relaunched from the creative team of Sam Humphries (The Ultimates) and Ron Garney (Fantastic Four). Oliver Coipel’s cover for the first issue has been revealed and shows an interesting line-up with some newly designed costumes. You also see Bishop, who was last seen stranded in the future after he failed to kill Cable and Hope Summers, who one can assume will the series first villain. Perhaps the most interesting thing about the line-up is though…who or what is this female version of Fantomex?

With Marc Webb back to direct the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man sequel, Sony Pictures are preparing to start casting for the film, which is set to begin production early next year. Variety is reporting that Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) is in early talks to join the cast as Mary Jane Watson.

Watson is the most well known of Peter Parker’s love interest and Woodley is said to be the studio’s leading choice for role. Sony are also currently looking for an actor to play Harry Osborn, Parker’s best friend. Still a little surprised that this character wasn’t introduced in the first film.

Oh, and who is the current villain rumored for the sequel? Well, it’s definitely one of the ones we said a while back. Rumor is that we may see Electro. However, being that production doesn’t begin for a few more months, there’s still plenty of time for them to decide which villain will take on Spidey next on the big screen.

The currently untitled sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man is set to hit theaters May 2nd, 2014.

The movie Ninja, starring Scott Adkins (The Expendables 2) is definitely one of those movies on peoples guilty pleasures list. It’s far from good but had fantastic action and choreography. And while the movie wasn’t some massive financial success it appears to be getting the sequel treatment. Hopefully Nu Image gives them a bigger budget this time around because I would love to see Scott Adkins do more big budget action flicks. Actually, they should get Adkins on board as Sub-Zero for the Mortal Kombat reboot. Just sayin’.

The original movie was about an American orphan who is adopted into a martial arts dojo in Japan, trained in Ninjitsu, and sent to New York to retrieve a legendary armored chest containing the weapons of the last Kōga ninja. Scott Adkins played the lead, and Moviehole reports that he will be reunited with original director Isaac Florentine for the sequel.

NINJA 2, is due to start filming early 2013.

It was confirmed earlier today by DC Comics that writer Andy Diggle (Daredevil) will be joined by Tony Daniel (Detective Comics) on art duties when the duo take over Action Comics from Grant Morrison as of issue #18. Diggle is probably best known for a controversial run on Daredevil and Daniels most recently wrote a very boring run on Detective. It also appears we may be seeing Superman donning a new suit in the first look at Tony Daniels artwork.

Diggle on the working on Action Comics:

“Even in an industry dominated by superheroes, Superman is THE superhero – the original and best – and I’m flattered, daunted and inspired in equal measure at being given the opportunity to build on such an incredible and historic legacy. The word ‘iconic’ is bandied around a lot in comics, but Superman defines the term. I’m excited to be working with Tony Daniel, whose artistic and storytelling skills will be bringing the world(s) of Superman to stunning visual life. Together we’ll be carving out spectacular new adventures that respect the past while redefining the future of the Man of Steel.”

Geekscape friend and Producer Adrian Askarieh (Hitman) and director Andre Ovredal (Trollhunter) are teaming up for a transmedia adaptation of Image Comics’ Enormous. Enormous tells of how humanity is plunged down the food chain when an ecological event creates gargantuan beasts that decimate civilization. The graphic novel was published by Image earlier this year and centered around a woman who tries to collect and save lost children.

Their plans include a high-end digital Web series, a TV show and a feature film. The duo say they want a tone similar to the film Cloverfield and the TV adaptation of The Walking Dead. They would like to focus on strong characters and complicated relationships with the monsters as the background for the adaptation. Sounds like a solid idea but I don’t know how well it will fare with the regular everyday television viewer (or with Legendary’s Godzilla film around the corner).

Wow, this is surprising. Stan Lee Media Inc., which keep in mind our beloved Stan is no long any part of, has decided to sue Walt Disney over the rights to the Marvel characters. The company is claiming that Disney doesn’t own the rights to the Marvel characters and they want a piece of the $5.5 billion it says the Disney has made from superhero movies and merchandise based on characters created by Stan Lee.

“Defendant The Walt Disney Company has represented to the public that it, in fact, owns the copyright to these characters as well as to hundreds of other characters created by Stan Lee. Those representations made to the public by The Walt Disney Company are false.”

Pretty interesting that they have just decided to speak up now being that they claim these rights were signed over by Mr. Lee back in 1998. Oh, that’s right. Marvel Studios and Disney just recently had the third highest grossing film of all time and now you guys own the rights to these characters? As Mr. Vanko said in Iron Man 2, “When Blood is in the water the sharks will come”.

Oh, and surprising. They also want full control over anything done with these characters in the future. Well, I hope Stan Lee Media Inc. is prepared to get royally screwed by the mouse because Disney is vicious in court.

A Gears Of War film has been in development since 2007. Total Recall’s Len Wiseman was even attached to direct at one point. However, the film got put on hold as New Line chose to focus on Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy instead.

Variety is now reporting that “Creative Artists Agency is eager to meet with producers in the coming weeks and set up the project elsewhere”. The site is also reporting that Stuart Beattie’s (Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tide) screenplay is currently being considered as the one that they will chose to move forward with.

Epic Games is said to be involved in order to consult on the adaptation in order to, “make sure it ties into the canon established by the games and books.”

It looks like Quentin Tarantino’s protege The RZA, who is set to make his directorial debut with next month’s The Man With The Iron Fists, has already lined up his next project. He will be teaming up with Grant Morrison to bring Morrison’s latest comic, keep in mind that only one issue of the mini-series has been released, Happy to the big screen. The comic debuted last month featuring art from Darick Robertson.

The script will be written by Morrison himself so don’t expect it to be too far off from the actual comic. But then again…none of us actually know what happens in the series past issue one so far. RZA is attached to direct and would produce with Hudlin, a producer on Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. If you haven’t picked up the first issue of Happy, and after this news it’s probably not going to be easy to, you probably should. The book is kind of like if you took bits of It’s a Wonderful LifeSin City, and Care Bears and mixed them all up into one neat little Grant Morrison package.

The synopsis for Happy:

Happy! centers on Nick Sax, a scummy corrupt ex-cop and hitman. After a hit goes bad and Sax is left gravely injured, he is suddenly able to see Happy, a cheerful little blue horse who won’t give in to adversity, no matter what unpleasant obstacles come in the way. Days before Christmas, Sax teams up with the saccharine horse to the save the life of a troubled kid and maybe find redemption amid the squalor of his city.

Twentieth Century Fox Animation and Blue Sky Studios have acquired the rights to make a feature film based on the late Charles Schulz’s iconic Peanuts franchise. The agreement is the culmination of over two years of discussions between the Studio and members of the Schulz family. The announcement was made today by Vanessa Morrison, the president of Twentieth Century Fox Animation.

The currently untitled animated featured will hit theaters November 25, 2015. 2015 will mark the 65th anniversary of the debut of the Peanuts comic strip as well as the 50th anniversary of the landmark television special, A Charlie Brown Christmas. This isn’t the first time that the Peanuts have hit theaters though. A Boy Named Charlie Brown earned over $6 million in theaters back in 1969 followed by three more features.

Charles Schulz Peanuts is regarded as one of the most influential comic strips of all time, and was read daily by roughly 355 million people across 75 different countries. Peanuts wasn’t only just a comic strip though. It has been adapted in the past into animated features that have gone on to win Emmy’s such as a It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.

The animated feature will be directed by Steve Martino, who has directed Horton Hears A Who! as well as Ice Age: Continental Drift. The screenplay will be done by Craig Schulz and the writing team of Bryan Schulz & Cornelius Uliano. Craig Schulz and Bryan Schulz, who are the late Mr. Schulz’s son and grandson, along with Uliano are producing.

Twentieth Century Fox Animation director of development Ralph Millero worked very closely with Morrison and with the Schulz estate in securing the rights to the property.

Craig Schulz commented on the project:

“We have been working on this project for years. We finally felt the time was right and the technology is where we need it to be to create this film. I am thrilled we will be partnering with Blue Sky/Fox to create a Peanuts movie that is true to the strip and will continue the legacy in honor of my father.”

After the revelation of the game and some announcements at San Diego Comic-Con, the news regarding  Injustice: Gods Among Us has been a tad slow. Well, minus revealing that there is going to be a collectors edition of the game. But there has been plenty of characters yet to be announced for the game still.

Entertainment Weekly has now revealed the latest addition to the game, the emerald archer himself, Green Arrow.

Injustice: Gods Among Us hits shelves next April.

We’ve got another casting rumor floating around this week. But just like the last rumor, this one doesn’t sound entirely unlikely. It appears that Warner Bros. has their sights on actor Armie Hammer (The Lone Ranger) to play Batman in their upcoming Justice League film. Keep in mind that Armie Hammer came very close to donning the cape and cowl once already. He was up for the role in Warner Bros. Justice League: Mortal movie that never came about.

The actor has on numerous occasions expressed his disappointment in interviews, explaining that they were only days from shooting when the roof caved in on the project. According to Moviehole they have sources that tell them that Warner Bros. has Hammer at the top of their list to for the in their upcoming Justice League film.

“Hearing, from a very good source, today that Hammer, who is now a hot commodity after such flicks as “The Social Network” and “Mirror Mirror”, not to mention his upcoming lead role in “The Lone Ranger”, is ”back on WB’s radar” for the part of Batman. Not for a solo flick, but for the ensemble “Justice League” movie [again].”

The site also goes on to say that Hammer may only be wanted for the studio’s Justice League meaning that we could see another Batman cast later on down the line for solo films. Hoping for a DC Cinematic Universe? You may not get it if that turns out to be true. Well, you may still get it but not a very consistent one. We will be sure to keep you updated as we learn more. But like any rumor…take this very lightly for the moment.

The anticipation is building up until the season premiere of The Walking Dead on Sunday. AMC has released the first minute long clip from the season premiere where we see Rick Grimes and the rest of survivors plan a strategy for the coming weeks.

“With the world growing increasingly more dangerous and Lori’s pregnancy advancing, Rick discovers a potentially safe haven. But first he must secure the premises, pushing his group to its limit.”

The Walking Dead returns October 14th.

About a week ago Marvel release a teaser that just simply read Savage and revealed Frank Cho on the book. It was pretty obvious that this would be a Wolverine title but it appears the word savage had more to it. It seems we will see Logan heading to the The Savage Land in the new series that will feature Shanna the She-Devil as a supporting character.

Cho, who be both writing and drawing the title, describes the book as a “a cool Indiana Jones/Cthulhu type story” and that “..The story takes place in the forbidden area of the Savage Land where an evil ancient god slumbers. Wolverine and others accidentally unleash it, while trying to get back home.” But bad news for fans of Ka-Zar. Cho reveals that we shouldn’t be expecting him to appear in the story but that should keep an eye out for some of the other Savage Land staples.

Deadline reveals that Fox has begun development on Bad Company. This series will be an hour long action comedy based on the EA video game, Battlefield: Bad Company. The first person shooter, while serious at times, definitely was one of the more light-hearted FPS’s out there. Battlefield: Bad Company was released in 2008 and spawned a sequel two years later. The game has received mostly positive reviews. The critics praised the story’s humor as well as the game’s technical aspects.

The series is being developed by John Eisendrath (Alias), Sony TV and Happy Madison studios. The pilot for the series has already been written by Eisendrath and will feature the main characters from the game. The show has been described as:

“It follows four renegade soldiers as they exit military life and enter the private sector. But trouble is never far behind as they realize their commanding officer had used them to further the ends of a shadow unit within the government and now wants them dead to cover his tracks.”

Video games haven’t had the best track record when being adapted so far. But maybe a television show may work out better than a film?

Every week there’s plenty of titles that hit your local comic shop. Maybe you’re having a hard time deciding which issues to pick up this week? TRANSFORMERS REGENERATION ONE #84

This week’s trade spotlight: SAGA VOL. 1

– When two soldiers from opposite sides of a never-ending galactic war fall in love, they risk everything to bring a fragile new life into a dangerous old universe. Fantasy and science fiction are wed like never before in a sexy, subversive drama for adults.

We’ve been recommending this one on the site for awhile now. I guess we can do it one more time.

A few days back it was revealed that Angry Birds: Star Wars was coming. And now the official release date has been revealed as November 8. The site Angry Birds: Star Wars shows all the birds as Star Wars characters as well as news on the game. Oh, and the game got a trailer that you can  check out below.

The press release states that the game will “combine all the fun of the classic Angry Birds and Angry Birds Space with the characters, stories and settings of the epic space fantasy, Star Wars”, and it looks like it will feature locations from the Star Wars universe from Tatooine to inside the Death Star.

New set photos from the set of RoboCop provide an even better look at the new suit as well as a shot of Michael Keaton on set and what looks like RoboCop being used to deal with a protest. Personally, I love the look of the new suit and can’t wait for this movie. Check out the new images below.

Waid will take on writing duties on a new Green Hornet title from Dynamite: Green Hornet And Kato next year. He’ll be joined by Daredevil artist Paolo Rivera for the cover art for the title. Check out some promo art for the book below.

Waid on his plans for the character:

“It should come as little surprise that I have an affinity for all costumed crimefighters no matter if their adventures are ‘period pieces’ or not–heroism is heroism regardless of whatever year’s on the calendar. With this Green Hornet project, which I’ve been percolating on for more than ten years, I’m able to meld my love of the Hornet’s legacy with a little bit of Citizen Kane and a lot of Lawrence of Arabia to tell a story never before told–the dark years of the Hornet’s later career and the one mistake he makes that nearly costs him everything.”

In 2010 it was reported that Rob Coihen, who produced the original The Monster Squad, was hoping to direct the planned remake. Cohen would be producing the film with Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Bradley Fuller and Andrew Form.

Well, it appears now that the film has taken a bit of a kick to the “nards”. It seems that a script is written and everything is ready to go but Paramount won’t give Cohen and Bay the green light for the film. Cohen recently spoke to ComingSoon and revealed what was happening with the stalled project.

“[The original] is one of the best things I’ve ever produced and I wanted to direct [the remake]. It’s sitting at Paramount. It’s a great script. I’ve been kicking them. Michael Bay has been kicking them. They don’t roll over… I don’t understand it. I’m hoping that one day we just get a call that they’ve finally seen the light of day.”

Howver, Cohen is still quite optimistic about the film happening:

“It happens all the time. They get onto something and they go, ‘The biggest audience we can get is young males between 12 and 16. What do you have that’s for young males between 12 and 16?’ Somebody says, ”Monster Squad’! Let’s do it! Let’s do ‘Monster Squad’!’ It’s that crazy.”

While I am sure there are some die-hard fans that are entirely against this I can see it happening and working out. They did a great job with the remake of Fright Night, so why couldn’t they pull this one off? Gues we’re going to have to wait and see if this one will ever actually see the light of day.

It’s a couple years away until production starts on the sequel to The Avengers. However, Marvel already knows what characters will be joining the team and now there’s a rumor that they are already looking at actresses to fill the role of one of these characters. According to Daily Mail, we should expect to see Carol Danvers AKA Ms. Marvel, who has speculated in the past. Not only that but the site goes on to state that Emily Blunt (Looper) and Ruth Wilson (Luther) are up for the role.

“Meanwhile, British actresses Emily Blunt and Ruth Wilson are head-to-head in a race for the most sought-after new female role in Hollywood. Emily, 29, and Ruth, 30, are both hotly tipped to play superhero Ms. Marvel in Avengers 2, the sequel to Avengers Assemble.”

So, for now take this rumor very lightly. But it is worth noting that if this is true it wouldn’t be the first time Marvel tried to nab Emily Blunt for a role. She was originally attached to to the role Black Widowin Iron Man 2, and she also turned down the role of Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger. Also with Marvel Studios going cosmic it doesn’t sound entirely unlikely. The only issue here is that this site isn’t really known for breaking casting news so we’re going to have to hold out on getting too excited on this one.

Could Ridley Scott be establishing a shared universe between the Alien and Blade Runner franchises? It seems that it could be possible given the following Easter Egg from the U.K. steelbook release of Prometheus.

The following memo from Peter Weyland, who was played by Guy Pearce, has Weyland talking about his “mentor and long-departed competitor”. No names are mentioned, but it’s pretty obvious to any Blade Runner fan that Weyland is referring to Eldon Tyrell. Tyrell was the head of the Tyrell Corporation who were responsible for creating the Replicant’s minds and memories in Blade Runner.

With a sequel to Blade Runner in the works it couldn’t be entirely unlikely that Scott is setting up a shared universe between the franchises. However, we’re going to have to wait and see on that one. Remember, big things have small beginnings.

The game takes Rovio’s iconic birds and recasts them as Star Wars characters. We will have The Red Bird as Luke Skywalker, the Yellow Bird as Han Solo and the Big Brother Bird as Chewbacca.

Oh, and don’t just expect a game. There will be toys. Oh, there will be toys. These toys will be released at Toys R Us in Times Square on 10AM Monday, October 8th

Yesterday Amazon revealed an Angry Birds: Star Wars Jenga set being released in which we see The Death Star in the shape of a Pig. Also lined up is a Star Wars Angry Birds Bounce Millennium Falcon.

Johnny Rosenthal (Bad Santa 2) has been hired by Summit to write the big screen adaptation of Brian Haberlin’s Area 52. The project has been in development at several studios and production companies almost since the comic was published back in 2001 by Image. The property was picked up by Summit last year with Red 2‘s Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian producing alongside Benderspink’s J.C. Spink, Chris Bender and Jake Weiner.

“The story follows a group of misfit soldiers stationed at a remote military base in Antarctica known as Area 52 that guard a storage facility in which top-secret, other-worldly technologies and weapons are kept and analysed. A murderous alien, hatched from an artifact, stalks the soldiers, who must defeat it.”

With it’s release date fast approaching, Sony has released a short new trailer for Skyfall featuring Adele’s theme song, which is sure to go down as a classic Bond theme. It doesn’t feature much new footage but it is a pretty damn cool short trailer for the 23rd Bond flick.

Skyfall reports for duty November 9th in US, and on October 26th in the UK and Ireland.

So, just when you thought Battleship was the stupidest idea to make a movie another announcement comes along that can only get one response: “Seriously?” Hasbro has signed a deal with Emmett/Furla, the production house run by Randall Emmett and George Furla, to produce three movies based on three of their properties within the next two years.

Hungry Hungry Hippos, Monopoly and Action Man are all being developed into movies. Again…seriously?! Did Hasbro not learn from Battleship sinking that this is a horrible idea?  Monopoly, which was set up at Universal when Hasbro signed a multi-property pact in 2008, is to be the first project before cameras, with a plan to begin production in 2013.

While I could possibly see the other two projects having some sort of story…what the hell would you make a Hungry Hungry Hippos movie about? It’s apparently going to be developed into an animated feature for children. Should we also be expecting a Jenga movie someday? Geez.

Not too long ago a Marvel NOW! teaser was revealed that just read “Superior” that led to much speculation as to what it meant. Earlier today USA Today revealed the following teaser which seem to confirm that Dan Slott , Ryan Stegman, Humberto Ramos and Giuseppe Camuncoli will be working on a new Marvel NOW! Spidey book.

The red and blue definitely also seems to be a clue. December’s issue #700 will be the final issue for The Amazing Spider-Man and it’s been talked about that there are some major changes coming for Peter Parker. But what these changes could be is up to anyone’s guess.
