The internet is buzzing, due to predictions and statements made by Nomura Securities analyst Junko Yamamura.  These statements  (via Barron’s Asia), point towards a “concept reveal” sometime between March and May, a full console reveal during E3, and even a console release in time for the holiday season of 2016.  While this is a possibility, it is no guarantee that we will see a 2016 console release, although other similar news have surfaced to strengthen this theory, such as a report that claims Nintendo will ship 20 million NX units in 2016.

The 3DS was initially launched in 2011, and Nintendo most commonly follows a five to six year console cycle between new systems, so a 2016 or 2017 launch year for its successor would make a lot of sense.  The Wii U was launched in 2012, so although a refresh on that console is unlikely, it isn’t entirely possible since there has been some speculation that it failed to meet the bar that its predecessor, the Wii, has set.  If there would be a “concept reveal”, my best guess it would be through a Nintendo Direct, which is Nintendo’s dedicated news platform for streaming news to gamers through video.  An E3 reveal for the console would also make sense, because E3 is the industry standard outlet for major gaming news, including, but not limited to, console reveals.  I think that a 2016 launch is still a bit of a stretch, but if the other two come true, it may very well be possible.

We have already an article on a NX patent utilizing “additional computing devices“, so we are excited by the potential new ways of gaming it could bring to the table!  Do you think that we will see this exciting new console in 2016?  Please let us know in the comments!

A new Pokémon arcade game has been announced by Bandai Namco for Japanese markets, and this one is very physical!

In the style of “chuck the ball” carnival games, Pokémon will appear on screen, and the players will throw actual Pokeballs at the screen in order to catch the Pokémon. Those with high scores will be reward with the opportunity to catch legendary Pokémon, such as Rayquaza.  After every game successfully completed, the player will be given one of 24 collectible cards.

…And I’m just wondering how the game’s screen will be able to handle so many Pokeballs being thrown at it, if DDR machines are any indication on how “serious” arcade-goers can take physical games.

This isn’t the first time that Bandai Namco has worked with The Pokémon Company on arcade spinoff titles. Already in Japanese arcades, and limited American arcades is the title Pokken Tournament, which has been announced to receive a Wii U release this year.

Do you think this game will make it state-side?  Would you like to see it in your local arcades?  Please let us know in the comments!

A member of the homebrew community, shutterbug20001, has created a way for Windows 95 to be used on the New Nintendo 3DS, and it looks great!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nu3_X6HcVrI

While we don’t know the specifics on how to get it installed, the homebrew community at GBATemp is already buzzing with ideas.  As for me, well, perhaps I can achieve my life long dream of having BonziBuddy on the go!

…I’m kidding.

Sure, it’s only Windows 95, but this could be the start of something beautiful. Would you ever want to run Windows on something as tiny as your 3DS? Let us know in the comments below!

In their own version of a Christmas, GalaxyTrail has just revealed a sequel to their wildly popular franchise Freedom Planet!  It seems not long ago that we wrote about the possibility of a 3DS port of the original, however, we are excited to hear that it’s getting a continuation!

While the trailer sets the baseline for their new story, information about the mechanics of their new game can be found at their website.  It already appears to have much of the Sonic-esque momentum based combat that we’ve all come to know and love from the first game.

The Freedom Planet franchise is about a spunky dragon girl and her friends who go up against a deadly alien force, and uses momentum based combat similar to the Sonic the Hedgehog games of the 16-bit era.  It was designed as a throwback to platformers of its style, but we believe this sequel will cement it as its own franchise, and step out of the shadows of the games of yesteryear!

Freedom Planet 2 will be available on PC and Wii U.

Nintendo’s highly anticipated Super Mario Maker December update is now live!  The update adds some never-before-seen items, as well as the launch of Super Mario Maker Bookmark!

The new items, directly from Nintendo’s website, include:

-Fire Koopa Clown Car: This volcanic vessel is capable of shooting fireballs as well as a powerful charged shot that can even destroy Blocks. It’s perfect for creating shoot-’em-up-style courses.

-P Warp Doors: Unlike regular Warp Doors, these are only visible while a P Switch is active—perfect for creating truly devious Ghost House courses.

-Bumper: This bouncy donut-shaped object sends Mario bounding away when touched.

-World Records: Now pages will display the World Record for each course uploaded, displaying the fastest clear time.

-Super Mario Maker Bookmark: Levels that players have bookmarked to play later using the Web portal will be accessible from the Course World tab.

Super Mario Bookmark is a web based tool to help you find Super Mario Maker courses to play when you’re not at home.  It also includes many filters to find courses, such as difficulty, and even incorporates search tags, such as “automatic”, so you can even look for a style of level!  We have seen similar endeavors, such as with Sony’s LittleBigPlanet series.  These options make it wonderful to search for courses while you’re at work, or busy outdoors, so when you get home, you can just concentrate on playing!  The tool is available right now, right here.

Super Mario Maker is a platform where you can build your own Mario levels, using many tools provided by Nintendo, such as enemies, music, and blocks.  We at Geekscape recommend Mario Maker levels weekly, our latest article details an unreal Metroid-vania style user-created level.

We’re certainly no strangers to unusual viral marketing for video games, and today, another cryptic campaign has popped up!

Bandai Namco, the publisher for famous properties such as Pac-Man and Tekken, has just opened up a site located at http://www.bne-project.com/, and the first thing you’ll notice upon accessing the page is the long hashtag, #MysteriousGame, followed by a countdown.

So far, the team at GameSpot has found a message in Spanish which roughly translates to “Teamwork will show us the way,” as well as a clue in the source code that reads “Find the clues, share them with your friends, and discover the mysterious game.”

We at Geekscape will try to do some sleuthing on our own, as well as bring you any new information we find out about the origin of this puzzle.  Feel free to join us in this fascinating journey in the comment section–perhaps we can figure this out together!

A new legendary Pokémon has been announced, Volcanion!  This is the first Pokémon that is both Fire and Water typing!  As such, steam will be its main theme.  The only announced competitive attribute is that its ability will be Water Absorb, which is an ability that absorbs water attacks to heal HP.  We are sure they will announce the details on how to get it soon; traditional legendary Pokémon distributions have taken place at Mcdonald’s restaurants using the 3DS SpotPass feature.

The Pokémon Company has recently announced that they’re changing the official format for Pokémon tournaments, namely trainers can now use up to two legendary Pokémon on their team (some restrictions apply), so this will definitely shake up the metagame at Premier Events!

Pokémon is a franchise in the RPG genre of gaming, where you assume the role of a child embarking on an adventure from home, and training native creatures called Pokémon to progress through the game.  Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire are remakes of the third generation of Pokémon games, Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald.

It might not be the Tekken x Street Fighter announcement that we’ve all been waiting for, but Bandai Namco has just announced that Akuma will be playable in its newest update of the game, Tekken 7 – Fated Retribution!

This announcement came in the form of a short trailer, displaying a pact between Heihachi’s wife Kazumi, and a shadowy figure, to kill Heihachi if she dies.  He agrees to repay his debt, and the shadowy figure is revealed to be none other than Akuma, cutting to a scene where he stands on a cliff on a darkened landscape, with his trademark “Ten” kanji amassing the background.

He seems to have returned with all of his signature moves from Street Fighter, such as his fireballs, hurricane kicks, dragon punches, and even Shun Goku Satsu, otherwise known as the Raging Demon.  Ranged attacks aren’t often used in the Tekken formula, two examples are Alisa Bosconovitch with her rocket punch, and Devil Jin with his laser beams–so this has the potential to change up the game!  Also this may give skeptics some insight on how the Street Fighter formula could fit in a Tekken battleground–and my own personal guess is that they’re using this as a “test” of sorts before they finalize the mechanics of Tekken x Street Fighter.

The way this could weave into the storyline is interesting as well.  Akuma is depicted as an antagonist in Street Fighter, using the demonic fighting force Satsui no Hado, which is a driving force for his desire for death matches, and his lack of compassion for other beings.  Tekken is a 3D fighting game centered around a power struggle for a family owned company (Mishima Zaibatsu) that has the military power to take over the world.  Heihachi is the centerpiece of this struggle, being the antagonist of the series, wanting to use the company for such a purpose.

At the moment, Tekken 7 is only available for arcades, although it has been announced for console release (date unknown).  Tekken x Street Fighter has been dubbed “under development” by Katsuhiro Harada (Tekken’s producer/director) as of 2014 San Diego Comic-Con, no other updates have been provided since then.

Nintendo’s newest console/platform, codenamed the “NX” is right on the horizon, and Nintendo just filed a patent that is likely related to the technology involved.

This patent in question will utilize “additional computing devices” in order to bolster the system’s capabilities, similar to purchasing an upgrade.  These devices may or may not be wired in nature.

The last time that Nintendo tried an upgrade approach was for the Nintendo 64, with a device called a “Jumper Pack” used to bolster the system’s memory–this device was required to play titles such as Donkey Kong 64.  Even moving forward, Nintendo developed ways to connect to external devices, such as the Game Boy Advance/GameCube translator cable, the ability to connect the Nintendo DS and 3DS wirelessly to the Wii and Wii U, as well as the latest technology that connects the Wii U’s Gamepad Controller to the Wii U as an additional screen.  However, NONE of these technologies pushed off processing power to the additional devices.

What can this possibly mean?  There is already speculation abound that it might be extra “upgrade parts”, and will function very much like cluster technology.  Without going heavy on details, the PS3’s “Folding @ home” technology can be used as an example, where using the software added your PS3 as part of a cluster with all of the other PS3s around the world to be able to do complex computing to help find the cure for many types of cancers.

I have a different theory, though.

With the background knowledge that Nintendo’s console and handheld departments have recently started working in the same building , I think it’s very much possible that Nintendo may be trying to market its portables and consoles together as a bundled value.  One of the few advantages of having a home-based console is stronger graphics, so if, for example, you could purchase a handheld system, but when not in use, allow it to be used by your home console to bolster it’s capabilities, then it doubles as both an upgrade for your home console, AND a handheld gaming device at the same time.  This way, you can get extra value by owning a handheld, but not lose any value on the home console if you choose not to purchase one.

Reggie Fils-Aime of Nintendo of America has already noted that they won’t be saying anything substantial about the NX until next year’s E3.  Although we’re getting very excited, we’ll have to wait and see!

How do you all feel about this new patent?  Is it a game changer, and do you have your own theories about how it can be implemented?  We would like to know!

We knew that PS2 emulation was headed to PS4 in one form or another, but we certainly didn’t expect something so soon!

Are you as huge a fan of PS2 classics like as Grand Theft Auto III, Twisted Metal: Black, and Dark Cloud as we are… AND happen to own a PS4?

In a tremendous announcement made by Sony, starting tomorrow, PS2 Classics are headed to the PlayStation Store!  This isn’t like their traditional emulation tactics in the past, either, as they will be adding trophy support, the games will be up-rendered to 1080p, they’ll offer Remote Play, Live Broadcast, Share Play, Activity Feeds, and Second Screen support as well!  In other words, all of the games will be taking FULL advantage of the many benefits the PS4 has to offer (aside from much of that extra power, of course).

For those unfamiliar with these benefits, Remote Play allows you to continue your PS4 gameplay on specific devices, such as the PlayStation Vita, as long as it’s connected to your home Wi-Fi network, Live Broadcast allows you to use a streaming service, such as Twitch, to share your gameplay with others over the internet, Share Play allows you to share your screen with one of your PSN friends so they may help you throughout the game, Activity Feeds are a social media-like tool that shows what games your friends have been playing, and Second Screen allows for other functions, such as a game manual, to appear on the PlayStation Vita or PlayStation app.

The full list of games available, starting tomorrow, are:

-Dark Cloud — $14.99
-Grand Theft Auto III — $14.99
-Grand Theft Auto: Vice City — $14.99
-Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas — $14.99
-Rogue Galaxy — $14.99
-The Mark of Kri — $14.99
-Twisted Metal: Black — $9.99
-War of the Monsters — $9.99

The following are all the games that will be available to play at the PlayStation Experience at San Francisco this weekend.  Notice there are others on this list?  This means there are more on the horizon!

-Dark Cloud
-Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
-Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
-PaRappa the Rapper 2 (coming soon)
-Rogue Galaxy
-The King of Fighters 2000 (coming soon)
-The Mark of Kri
-War of the Monsters

What a wonderful year the PlayStation 20th anniversary is turning out to be!  Which PS2 titles would you like to see on the PS4?  I, for one, can name a few, such as X-Men Legends, Musashi Samurai Legend, and Culdcept!

The folks at Activision have prepared a special Christmas Carol for all Skylanders Superchargers players (who are dubbed “Portal Masters”), and we must admit that it’s quite catchy!

Hark! Over There!
Park Over There!
Land, Sea, or Sky,
Dive, Drive or Fly!

Skylanders is the first in its genre, the “Toys to life” franchise. Their current installments, Skylanders Superchargers (available on Wii U, PS3, and PS4) and Skylanders Superchargers Racing (available on 3DS and Wii), changes their formula by adding vehicles into the mix! While Skylanders Superchargers Racing is purely a racing game, Skylanders Superchargers takes the traditional elements of it’s previous games. such as the top down platforming/power-up engine (Marvel Ultimate Alliance, anyone?), and transitions it to smaller racing segments, all taking place in land, sea, or sky!

And heck, while we’re at it, we would also like to remind you that there’s a special Skylander–Missile-Tow Dive-Clops–available at GameStop starting today!  Missile-Tow… ha!  I see what they did there.

We’re super excited for a new StreetPass weekend that has just been announced, beginning tomorrow, November 26 and ending on November 29!

Streetpass is one of the 3DS’ most popular features, allowing users to be able to passively exchange data between systems, just by being near another player with a 3DS system.  This can be used to amazing effect, such as with Streetpass Mii Plaza, where you can gather warriors to play in an RPG style game, or with Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire where meeting other players through Streetpass can get you access to their Secret Bases (special in-game hideouts), and even access to a special mythical Pokémon!

During National Streetpass weekends, you can visit one of many locations with a Nintendo Zone to get streetpass tags. The most common locations are Best Buy, McDonalds, and even Home Depot!  This breaks the “traditional” rules of how Streetpass works, allowing you to get Streetpass tags of many people around the country who have also visited the same Zones that you have.

SP

Not only that, but you’ll also be able to obtain two special in-game events when you connect to Nintendo Zones this weekend–the ability to build a home for Felyne in Animal Crossing : Happy Home Designer, as well as obtaining Hoopa for Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, a Pokémon that has never been released before–although Hoopa is only available specifically at McDonald’s Nintendo Zone locations.

Animal Crossing : Happy Home Designer is a 3DS title that was released in September (that our correspondent El Chucho loves), and allows you to create homes for many residents of an Animal Crossing town.  Felyne is a special character only previously seen in the Monster Hunter franchise, and by downloading his content, you get access to tons of Monster Hunter related items for your game.  This has been a fantastic collaboration by Nintendo and the Monster Hunter franchise, and although it was previously available through the internet before, it is again available this weekend at Nintendo Zones!

Hoopa is a never-before released legendary Pokémon.  It is a Psychic/Dark type that has access to the super powerful move Hyperspace Fury!  With this devastating move, Hoopa sends its six arms and six rings flying to surround its foe and attack from all directions, even if the target has tried to defend itself with moves like Protect or Detect!  In order to acquire Hoopa, be sure to choose the Mystery Gift option in-game while at the Nintendo Zone.

Looking for some classic Sonic The Hedgehog style action? Look no further than Galaxy Trail’s Freedom Planet. The game is ‘a combat-based platform adventure that pits a spunky dragon girl and her friends against an alien attack force.

If you are a fan of the 16-bit era Sonic games, it’s definitely worth a look–as it uses many of the traditional elements of the Sonic games, while adding its own twists, such as a special meter for certain kinds of boosts and double jumps.

The game was a successful, celebrated Kickstarter project back in 2013, and has received myriads of praise from gamers all over the world. Of course, Freedom Planet would be make for an incredible mobile experience, and during a recent Reddit AMA, Galaxy Trail talked about a possible 3DS port of the title, noting:

The game’s resolution is nearly perfect for the 3DS, but there are some technical restrictions we’d have to deal with first and we also want to think of a good way to utilize the touch screen.

Of course, they also chatted about Freedom Planet‘s transistion from a Sonic The Hedgehog fan title to its own, original property:

Very, very early on. The switch happened when we were still playing around with the physics engine and everything was drawn as boxes and circles, haha. The only Sonic element that existed in some form was rings, which were soon switched out for life petals.

The game is currently available on PC via Steam, and Nintendo’s Wii U, and again, we’d encourage you to give it a look! The full AMA is also filled with interesting questions and answers, so if Freedom Planet looks at all interesting to you, I’d go ahead and take look.

Welcome to Splatfest! Splatfest is a game mode for Wii U excusive Splatoon that allows all of its players to pick a side (Dogs/Cats, Roller Coasters/Water Slides, etc.) and be able to battle in the mode Turf War while representing their team! These events only happen every once in a while… in game they are celebratory events where the plaza completely changes the setting to an outdoor concert, and leveling up in these events earn you “Super Sea Snails,” which can be used to either add slots to your gear, or re-roll abilities on your gear.

The first Splatfest had drawn a lot of ire because “Popularity” was considered as part of the formula to decide the winning team. This formula, very specifically, is: Popularity Percentage + (Win Percentage x 2). Even though Team Cats had 51 percent of the wins compared to Team Dogs’ 49, Dogs had 62 percent popularity to Cats’ 38, which allowed them to claim the victory. In the most recent Splatfest, Roller Coasters versus Water Slides, Roller Coasters won with a popularity/wins percentage of 46/53, allowing them to claim victory by wins, and not by popularity!

In the aftermath of both of these Splatfests, users on Reddit and other online forums have been developing labels/nicknames based on the sides that gamers have chosen. The four labels have been designated as “Dogcoaster”, “Dogslider”, “Catcoaster”, and “Catslider”. While these labels are used sometimes in jest, some use these labels with a negative connotation, such as relating “Dogcoasters” as sore winners, or “Catsliders” as sore losers. “Catcoasters” feel great that wins finally eked them the win, while “Dogsliders” are slightly disappointed that being popular didn’t get them the win this time around. And some are wondering if the trend will continue–will we see terms like “Sun Dogcoaster” and “Moon Catslider” in the future?

It’s all a little confusing to say the least, but it all adds to the crazy fun of Splatoon. How do you feel about these labels—are they all in good fun, or just competitive slurs to divide the players? P.S. I am a Catslider!

I had the opportunity to attend the Pokemon Symphonies concert at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles July 11, and the orchestra really put on an incredible show! Though the music itself was nothing short of phenomenal, they also had the nice touch of displaying footage from previous Pokemon games on several screens laid out around the amphitheater. For some younger folks, and other folks who didn’t get into the series until later on, like my wife, this was the first time they were laying eyes on some of this footage. On the screens, you were able to re-experience the fateful battle between the main protagonists of the first two generations-Red vs. Gold. Not everyone understands why this battle was so mind blowing when it was first discovered.

First, please bear in mind that I’m an adult in my late twenties, and thus, had experienced the first two generations of Pokemon as a child. As I continue to write, I believe to speak for my generation, however, the experience of others in my age group may differ slightly.

Pokemon Red/Blue was introduced back in 1998 (in North America), and Gold/Silver was introduced in 2000 (also North America), a difference of 2 years. This time frame was enough for a lot of kids to grow and mature enough for their personalities to change. Although sequels weren’t uncommon, many of us were still surprised to find out that another Pokemon game, with an expanded roster, was coming out. However, when you start playing the game, it avoids considering itself a sequel, although it makes subtle references throughout. It isn’t until you are able to venture into Kanto that the reality sets in (thanks, Iwata!).

Within Kanto, it feels like you’re venturing as the kid you were years ago, and at times it feels like the game is testing how much better you have become, both in the real world sense and the in-game fictional sense. However, nothing can quite prepare you for the Easter egg challenge that awaits you if you search hard enough: the battle with Pokemon trainer Red.

When you first face Red, there is the immediate shock that you are, quite literally, facing the person that you were years ago–even though the game takes into account that some years have passed, and thus Red’s Pokemon are much higher leveled. It is bittersweet to face Pokemon after Pokemon that you recognize, many of which were commonly used by players of that generation (such as Pikachu and the three starters). And it is such a challenging fight, nothing feels better than victory… and yet it kinda feels like you’ve “conquered” yourself, and are a bit more grown up now.

Ever since then, the trope of facing oneself from the past have been used in other games, but the battle with Red was one of the most shocking. I am certain that anybody who has experienced it has never forgotten it.
