Nintendo’s highly anticipated Super Mario Maker December update is now live!  The update adds some never-before-seen items, as well as the launch of Super Mario Maker Bookmark!

The new items, directly from Nintendo’s website, include:

-Fire Koopa Clown Car: This volcanic vessel is capable of shooting fireballs as well as a powerful charged shot that can even destroy Blocks. It’s perfect for creating shoot-’em-up-style courses.

-P Warp Doors: Unlike regular Warp Doors, these are only visible while a P Switch is active—perfect for creating truly devious Ghost House courses.

-Bumper: This bouncy donut-shaped object sends Mario bounding away when touched.

-World Records: Now pages will display the World Record for each course uploaded, displaying the fastest clear time.

-Super Mario Maker Bookmark: Levels that players have bookmarked to play later using the Web portal will be accessible from the Course World tab.

Super Mario Bookmark is a web based tool to help you find Super Mario Maker courses to play when you’re not at home.  It also includes many filters to find courses, such as difficulty, and even incorporates search tags, such as “automatic”, so you can even look for a style of level!  We have seen similar endeavors, such as with Sony’s LittleBigPlanet series.  These options make it wonderful to search for courses while you’re at work, or busy outdoors, so when you get home, you can just concentrate on playing!  The tool is available right now, right here.

Super Mario Maker is a platform where you can build your own Mario levels, using many tools provided by Nintendo, such as enemies, music, and blocks.  We at Geekscape recommend Mario Maker levels weekly, our latest article details an unreal Metroid-vania style user-created level.

Another Week Another Level.

Today’s level comes from a japanese user. The level itself is Dungeon Vania. The idea of this level is that there is more than one way to get to your goal. Sometimes going through a pipe might cause you to die or force backtracking in order to get another item, but this doesn’t constantly happen so you still feel in control. In some ways the level is actually more like a puzzle.

Dungeon Vania 2

Before you enter a pipe to a puzzle room, you’ll see certain symbols of items or enemies in small boxes above it. These are used as clues for what to expect from those pipes. Some might involve using kuribo shoes & POW blocks, but others might take use of fire flowers or piranha plants. Can you successfully navigate your way through the dungeons tricks and traps to get to the goal?

Dungeon Vania 3

If you think you can take this level head on try it at: 8EB7-0000-011D-E29B. Comment below if you have any levels that you think should be showcased. Until next week, keep creating and playing awesome levels!

‘Super Mario Maker’ is in for another surprise update come December 22nd.

On top of finally getting a Bookmark feature for courses, the game will also be gaining new course items. These include bumpers, invisible p-switch doors, and a fire koopa clown car. On top of this, you’ll also be able to see who has the fastest time on a course, and who beat it first. Are you excited for this new update? What course elements would you like to see added? Comment below and check out the trailers below for a more in depth look.

It might not be the Tekken x Street Fighter announcement that we’ve all been waiting for, but Bandai Namco has just announced that Akuma will be playable in its newest update of the game, Tekken 7 – Fated Retribution!

This announcement came in the form of a short trailer, displaying a pact between Heihachi’s wife Kazumi, and a shadowy figure, to kill Heihachi if she dies.  He agrees to repay his debt, and the shadowy figure is revealed to be none other than Akuma, cutting to a scene where he stands on a cliff on a darkened landscape, with his trademark “Ten” kanji amassing the background.

He seems to have returned with all of his signature moves from Street Fighter, such as his fireballs, hurricane kicks, dragon punches, and even Shun Goku Satsu, otherwise known as the Raging Demon.  Ranged attacks aren’t often used in the Tekken formula, two examples are Alisa Bosconovitch with her rocket punch, and Devil Jin with his laser beams–so this has the potential to change up the game!  Also this may give skeptics some insight on how the Street Fighter formula could fit in a Tekken battleground–and my own personal guess is that they’re using this as a “test” of sorts before they finalize the mechanics of Tekken x Street Fighter.

The way this could weave into the storyline is interesting as well.  Akuma is depicted as an antagonist in Street Fighter, using the demonic fighting force Satsui no Hado, which is a driving force for his desire for death matches, and his lack of compassion for other beings.  Tekken is a 3D fighting game centered around a power struggle for a family owned company (Mishima Zaibatsu) that has the military power to take over the world.  Heihachi is the centerpiece of this struggle, being the antagonist of the series, wanting to use the company for such a purpose.

At the moment, Tekken 7 is only available for arcades, although it has been announced for console release (date unknown).  Tekken x Street Fighter has been dubbed “under development” by Katsuhiro Harada (Tekken’s producer/director) as of 2014 San Diego Comic-Con, no other updates have been provided since then.

It sure feels good spotlighting another level after last weeks crazy game awards announcements.

Today’s course is a level so small that only about a handful of people have actually played it. It actually plays out more like a small story than anything. The name of this course is titled happy tale of helping, by Kieran.

Happy Tale 1

The level stars you as lonely goomba just trying to find your way home. Upon entering the underground on your way home, you’re quickly greeted by another goomba who can’t help but noticing that you’re struggling a little bit with trying to get home. He then proceeds to offer you help by jumping on a music block and summoning a quick vine to climb. Thankful for having helped, you decided to repay the favor and give him a hand.

Happy Tale 3

A bit later, you also run into a friendly koopa troopa who also decides to tag along on your adventure. Will you both make it home safe? Find out by playing the level at: 27A7-0000-010C-0593! Until next time, keep playing and creating awesome levels!

Smash fans REJOICE!

Nintendo has finally revealed the date for their final Super Smash Bros. centered Nintendo Direct.

You won’t be waiting long for it, because it’s currently scheduled for Tuesday December 15th at 2PM Pacific Time.

While this is the final direct dedicated solely to Smash Bros, it’s very likely that we’ll continue to see minor game updates via regular Directs in the future.

What do you want to see announced during this Direct? Comment below!

Nintendo’s newest console/platform, codenamed the “NX” is right on the horizon, and Nintendo just filed a patent that is likely related to the technology involved.

This patent in question will utilize “additional computing devices” in order to bolster the system’s capabilities, similar to purchasing an upgrade.  These devices may or may not be wired in nature.

The last time that Nintendo tried an upgrade approach was for the Nintendo 64, with a device called a “Jumper Pack” used to bolster the system’s memory–this device was required to play titles such as Donkey Kong 64.  Even moving forward, Nintendo developed ways to connect to external devices, such as the Game Boy Advance/GameCube translator cable, the ability to connect the Nintendo DS and 3DS wirelessly to the Wii and Wii U, as well as the latest technology that connects the Wii U’s Gamepad Controller to the Wii U as an additional screen.  However, NONE of these technologies pushed off processing power to the additional devices.

What can this possibly mean?  There is already speculation abound that it might be extra “upgrade parts”, and will function very much like cluster technology.  Without going heavy on details, the PS3’s “Folding @ home” technology can be used as an example, where using the software added your PS3 as part of a cluster with all of the other PS3s around the world to be able to do complex computing to help find the cure for many types of cancers.

I have a different theory, though.

With the background knowledge that Nintendo’s console and handheld departments have recently started working in the same building , I think it’s very much possible that Nintendo may be trying to market its portables and consoles together as a bundled value.  One of the few advantages of having a home-based console is stronger graphics, so if, for example, you could purchase a handheld system, but when not in use, allow it to be used by your home console to bolster it’s capabilities, then it doubles as both an upgrade for your home console, AND a handheld gaming device at the same time.  This way, you can get extra value by owning a handheld, but not lose any value on the home console if you choose not to purchase one.

Reggie Fils-Aime of Nintendo of America has already noted that they won’t be saying anything substantial about the NX until next year’s E3.  Although we’re getting very excited, we’ll have to wait and see!

How do you all feel about this new patent?  Is it a game changer, and do you have your own theories about how it can be implemented?  We would like to know!

Animal Crossing Fans have had it pretty rough this year.

While a lot of people did enjoy the series new 3DS outing Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer,  many still felt like it wasn’t a fully realized game. Even more disappointing was the release of Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival, which failed to please both fans and critics by being a slow moving board game with little to no fun and painful amiibo integration. Fear not though, as one fan has taken it upon himself to show us what he thinks the next installment should look like.

In a video new series titled Make Believe, host Josh Thomas takes us through all the new features that would make the next Animal Crossing stand out from the crowd. Without ruining any surprises, let’s just say that this video might LIFT your spirits about getting a new entry. Check out the video below!

The folks at Activision have prepared a special Christmas Carol for all Skylanders Superchargers players (who are dubbed “Portal Masters”), and we must admit that it’s quite catchy!

Hark! Over There!
Park Over There!
Land, Sea, or Sky,
Dive, Drive or Fly!

Skylanders is the first in its genre, the “Toys to life” franchise. Their current installments, Skylanders Superchargers (available on Wii U, PS3, and PS4) and Skylanders Superchargers Racing (available on 3DS and Wii), changes their formula by adding vehicles into the mix! While Skylanders Superchargers Racing is purely a racing game, Skylanders Superchargers takes the traditional elements of it’s previous games. such as the top down platforming/power-up engine (Marvel Ultimate Alliance, anyone?), and transitions it to smaller racing segments, all taking place in land, sea, or sky!

And heck, while we’re at it, we would also like to remind you that there’s a special Skylander–Missile-Tow Dive-Clops–available at GameStop starting today!  Missile-Tow… ha!  I see what they did there.

Frog MarioWhile all of us were enjoying a nice Thanksgiving meal with family last night, it seems like Nintendo decided to sneakingly give us a new event course for Super Mario Maker.

This event course in particular is named NES Remix and is based off the Wii U game of the same title. After the completion of the course you will receive a mystery mushroom that’s a bit different than the others. This one is the Frog Mario outfit, and it more or less functions exactly how it would in Super Mario Bros. 3. The only real disappointing thing is that  since this is only a costume, it can only be used in the original Super Mario Bros. art style.

Are you excited for the inclusion of the Frog Suit? Comment below and check out an awesome video tour of the costume by Gamexplain!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1zsE5g7wA0

Everyone have a nice Thanksgiving Day? Good.

If you’re like me and don’t really care about black friday, then pull up a chair and check out this weeks Super Mario Maker course. This weeks level is Kuribo ShoeDown by Osmariobro.

ShoeDown 1

This is a level that focuses on one of my favorite parts to come out Super Mario Bros. 3, and that of course is the Kuribo Shoe. This level starts as you hijack a flying shoe at the start of a level in order to get to the end. Be careful though, because this level is a race against time as you only have 300 seconds. That may not sound so bad, but there’s no room to mess around as the time dwindles fast.

ShoeDown 2During the level, not only will you have to race to the finish, but you’ll also have to deal with an onslaught of obstacles. Everything from your regular Muncher Plants to giant Dry Bones,  this level won’t go easy on you. Unless of course you can find the secret door warp that takes you to the end of the level. Many more tricks and traps await you in this gauntlet. Try it out for yourself at: 8A9A-0000-00A4-9BC9.

ShoeDown 3Until next time, keep creating and playing awesome levels!

Looking for some classic Sonic The Hedgehog style action? Look no further than Galaxy Trail’s Freedom Planet. The game is ‘a combat-based platform adventure that pits a spunky dragon girl and her friends against an alien attack force.

If you are a fan of the 16-bit era Sonic games, it’s definitely worth a look–as it uses many of the traditional elements of the Sonic games, while adding its own twists, such as a special meter for certain kinds of boosts and double jumps.

The game was a successful, celebrated Kickstarter project back in 2013, and has received myriads of praise from gamers all over the world. Of course, Freedom Planet would be make for an incredible mobile experience, and during a recent Reddit AMA, Galaxy Trail talked about a possible 3DS port of the title, noting:

The game’s resolution is nearly perfect for the 3DS, but there are some technical restrictions we’d have to deal with first and we also want to think of a good way to utilize the touch screen.

Of course, they also chatted about Freedom Planet‘s transistion from a Sonic The Hedgehog fan title to its own, original property:

Very, very early on. The switch happened when we were still playing around with the physics engine and everything was drawn as boxes and circles, haha. The only Sonic element that existed in some form was rings, which were soon switched out for life petals.

The game is currently available on PC via Steam, and Nintendo’s Wii U, and again, we’d encourage you to give it a look! The full AMA is also filled with interesting questions and answers, so if Freedom Planet looks at all interesting to you, I’d go ahead and take look.

Fans of Hyrule Warriors Eagerly awaiting the 3DS port for next year are in for a treat.

According to NeoGAF user Ryce, the newest issue of the highly popular Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu has revealed that Ganondorf will have a brand new lightning based trident moveset as opposed to his current great sword moveset. Just like the new characters in the game, the new moveset can be easily transferred to the Wii U version also. If you want to see Ganondorf’s great sword moveset check out this awesome reveal trailer that was shown off last year. Hyrule Warriors Legends launches for the 3DS on March 25th 2016.

Yesterday’s Nintendo Direct brought loads of surprises, as well as some welcome updates on previously announced titles like Xenoblade Chronicles X for the Wii U. Beyond showcasing new video eye candy, which I am completely in favor of, they also discussed the function of four data packs for the game, all of which are already up on the Wii U eShop. These downloads will serve to decrease loading time in-game for the disc version of the game; the eShop copies will have these packs included. It should be noted that downloading the packs is optional but strongly encouraged.

Here are the names of the data packs and their file sizes:

– Basic Pack (2 GB)

– Enemy Pack (2.7 GB)

– Player Pack (3.6 GB)

– Skell Pack (1.7 GB)

Xenoblade Chronicles X will release in North America on December 4th.  Pre-orders are currently available on the Wii U eShop as well as at your local game store.

Today was Nintendo Direct day, and it started off with a bang!

Twilight Princess is coming to the Wii U next year. It will feature upgraded HD graphics, new tighter controls and will feature Amiibo support with a brand new Wolf Link/Midna Amiibo!

Originally released for Wii and Nintendo GameCube systems in 2006, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD is a visually remastered remake of one of the most critically acclaimed games in The Legend of Zelda series. The new game launches on March 4 in a bundle with a detailed new amiibo figure modeled after the Wolf Link and Midna characters in the game. The game will also be compatible with five other The Legend of Zelda amiibo from the Super Smash Bros. series. The game’s iconic soundtrack will be offered as a bonus for fans who pre-order the game from select retailers.

CTpLCOBUAAAHQ2R

The bit they showed in the direct makes me extremely hopeful. The graphics look tighter, and the controls will use the control pad. My biggest gripe with Twilight Princess was the crummy motion controls. I never finished the game, and lamented never picking it up on the Gamecube to actually beat. Going to hafta give it a whirl this time around.

You can snag The Legend of Zelda; Twilight Princess HD on the WiiU March 4th 2016!

This Friday, the next major batch of Amiibo, Nintendo’s wildly popular line of toys to life figurines, will make their debut alongside Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival. Serving as the series’ first Amiibo representation outside of the Smash Bros. Villager, our favorite animal friends like Isabelle, K.K. Slider and the slumlord, Tom Nook, will finally be represented in figure form. If those aren’t enough for you, Mega Yarn Yoshi will release a mere two days later, exclusively at Toys R Us. Having special functionality in Yoshi’s Wooly World and sizing up as the largest Amiibo to date, (as well as coming with the highest price tag, with an MSRP of $39.99,) many a gamer will have a new friend to keep them warm during these long, winter nights.

Luckily, we were able to get an in person preview of some of these figures in advance. While we wait patiently for the day when these new toys can take up more of our shelf space, here are a few shots to hold you over until the weekend rolls around.

Amiibo Animal Crossing

Nook is thinking of ways to rip us off as we speak.

Amiibo Isabelle

Best girl.

Amiibo Mega Yarn YoshiJust the right cuddle size.

Between the sloped bases of the Animal Crossing set and the care that Yarn Yoshi seems like it received, it’s possible that these might become my favorite Amiibo yet! Which ones are you planning on picking up this weekend? Share your Amiibo plans with us in the comments below. And remember, this is a No Shades Zone!

While Nintendo has been better over the past year with revisiting some of their seemingly forgotten franchises like Star Fox and Chibi Robo, one much sought after series that is nowhere to be found is F-Zero. Looking to fill that void, the developers at Shinen Games, (the folks behind the Jett Rocket and Nanostray series of games,) have turned their attention to the race track with FAST Racing NEO, a futuristic, high speed competition that pits the galaxy’s greatest drivers against one another across a series of tracks. At this year’s IndieCade, we got a chance to check out what this promising title has in store for Wii U owners.

FAST Racing NEO Screen 1Opponents are relentless

Obviously modeled after the style of Nintendo’s own racer, NEO manages to replicate the sense of speed, and the punishing difficulty of the games that inspired it. Keeping up with each turn, figuring out when the best times to boost are, and fighting off opponents who will take the first chance they get to run you off the road all comes off as a seamless, adrenaline filled experience that comes off as if it were a sequel in a long running series as opposed to the developer’s first try at this type of game. Putting all of these pieces together as you zoom through the track is vital if you want to win, because once you fly off the road or end up getting your vehicle destroyed, chances are you can say goodbye to that first place position. The CPU in the runs that I played was relentless, ensuring that I was on top of my game each time.

Not content with just being an F-Zero clone however, NEO manages to pull away from the pack thanks to its unique boosting meter mechanic. Replacing the health meter is the boost meter, where driving over certain sections of the track will build up your stored boost for later use. However, these sections are color coated as either blue or orange, and will only reward you with that precious speed if you ship switches its force field to match the color of the track. Much like Ikaruga, changing colors on the fly is achieved with a simple tap of the button, but anticipating when the right time to switch is becomes a challenge in and of itself, adding some depth to an already strong outing.

FAST Racing NEO Screen 3Split screen co-op, and it still looks great? Who would have thought?

Scheduled for a 2015 release on the Wii U e-Shop, FAST Racing NEO is right around the corner. Complete with online and four player split screen races to accompany the game’s yet to be played single player content, and it’s looking like this indie title will be one to save your points cards for when the holidays roll around.

Are you as excited for FAST Racing NEO as we are? Let us know in the comment below!

When it comes to spin-off games like the Mario Tennis series, one of the reasons why people keep coming back is to see what kinds of tricks the game throws in to make it fresh enough to pick up again. The Tennis series in particular has had everything from an RPG mode on the Game Boy Color, to the popular power shots in the GameCube days, while the 3DS iteration mostly fell flat in this writer’s eyes. How do you improve on the formula for its Wii U debut? If Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash has any say, it’s that bigger is definitely better!

Mario Tennis Ultra Smash Screen 2

The demo version that we sat down with featured your standard Singles and Doubles matches, with characters such as Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Wario and Yoshi coming with their own play styles and stats. However, none of them can top Rosalina, as she throws her power around while gracefully floating along the court. Like previous games, tapping different combinations of the two main face buttons will trigger different types of swings, such as a lob, top spin or back spin. Using these techniques to catch your opponents off guard is just as rewarding as it ever was, bringing back the deceptively strong strategy element to this arcade style sports game.

But then again, if that’s all there was to it, then you might as well play any other tennis game and get a similar experience. In Ultra Smash however, Mega Mushrooms will slide across the court for one of the players to grab. Doing so will make the first character to touch it grow into a towering giant, much like how they did in the New Super Mario Bros. series that the item debuted in. When bigger, each swing is receives a drastic power boost, stunning and knocking back the player who rallies the ball back. Assuming you don’t catch your opponents sleeping with a ball straight to the face, (which happened MANY times during my play through,) the defending team is left with a tense, desperate struggle to defend their side of the net, a dynamic which has yet to be seen in the series until now.

Mario Tennis Ultra Smash Screen 3

If playing locally isn’t your thing, online play has been confirmed as well, so you’ll be able to match up against players from around the world. When real friends aren’t good enough for you, Ultra Smash also features full Amiibo support, allowing you to train them until they learn to slaughter you as bad as they do in Super Smash Bros. A single player tournament mode or mini games weren’t confirmed, but I’d be surprised if they don’t make it in the final game in some form considering they’ve been in every other version. No matter what mode you play however, motion control options have been completely removed in this version, so those who wanted to get their swing on are out of luck.

Releasing on November 20th exclusively for the Wii U, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash might be the game you need to get your arcade style sports fix. Are you planning on picking this up? Comment below and tell us why!

It’s finally that time of the year again! After 6 months of silence and wait, Nintendo is finally treating everybody to one last Nintendo Direct for the year.

The direct will happen on November 12th and begin at 2PM Pacific time and will be detailing upcoming and possibly unannounced Wii U and 3DS games for late this year and early next year.

This will be the first Nintendo Direct to not feature Satoru Iwata due to his passing this last July. Hopefully they can still live up to Iwata’s legacy and deliver and fun filled direct.

What do you hope to see during the presentation? Sound out below!

Another week, another featured course.

This week I’m highlighting the 1st out of many different levels starring everyone’s favorite garlic munching, money grubbing ball of fat. This is Super Wario: Rural Ruins by Joe. Super Wario 1The title pretty much explains itself. In this level, you take control of Wario as he finds himself exploring some lost ruins in search of treasure. Throughout the level you’ll explore caves, fight enemies, and even solve some tricky puzzles. There are also 3 diamonds hidden throughout the whole level. Will you be brave enough to venture off the beaten path to find them?Super Wario 2On top of that, there are also a handful of hidden 1-UP’S scattered throughout the levels entirety. Will you be able to leave the ruins in riches, or will the ruins make a relic out of you? The chose is yours to make. If you’re feeling brave enough, give it a try at: 3404-0000-00A0-20DA. Until next time, Keep making and creating awesome levels! Super Wario

For a genre that’s meant to bring family and friends together for some lighthearted fun, party games have this terrible habit of making people hate each other. Never just letting the roll of the dice decide the game, it’s become commonplace for the genre to rely on mini games, item collecting, and the ability to sabotage other players. While entertaining, it’s wise not to play with people that you actually want to stay friends with when the day is over.

Which is why after playing Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival, I was pleasantly surprised to find that none of that tomfoolery was present when it came to our animal friends. Supporting up to four players with each Amiibo serving as a game piece, (much like Mario Party 10‘s Amiibo Party mode, complete with the annoying need to tap your character with each dice roll,) the citizens of the village aren’t out to harm their friends, but instead, spread happiness throughout the town. Each section on the board represents an activity, whether it’s shopping, styling your hair or participating in a competition. After an adorable scene plays out describing the event, it will award either Happy Points or Bells, with the latter being used to cash in for more of the former. The player with the most happy points at the end wins, spreading some much needed joy to the bloodthirsty world of virtual board games. That’s not to say that there aren’t ways to end up losing points or for other players to gain an advantage, but don’t expect three on one gang beatings either.

Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival Screen 2Each space describes an activity in town, like a trip to the salon!

In addition to this mostly passive method of play, the maps themselves are inspired by Animal Crossing‘s calendar system. With each turn taking up one day, the scenery and weather will change with each passing day. Though the amount of time a game takes can be customized, the standard matches will run through one full month, complete with special events for any holidays that happen to fall in that time frame. It manages to capture the spirit of why the series is so popular within a completely different genre.

With all of that said, that’s not to say that the mini games aren’t there. More specifically, Amiibo Festival has a dedicated mini game mode, pushing the theme of friendship even further by forcing the animals to work together in what can only be described as Nintendo’s version of Lost. Trapped on an island, the animal team has a certain amount of turns to gather materials to build a raft for their escape while quelling their hunger at the same time. Using materials to build tools like fishing rods for food, shovels for digging up hidden Pitfalls that would cost you your turn otherwise, or saving them for your great escape, this side game asks the animals to pool together their resources to meet a common goal. The catch? This mode can only be played with those Amiibo cards you might have seen pop up in stores for minutes at a time. While the game comes packaged with a few, it’s not enough to play the full island game, so you’re going to have to drop a few extra Bells if you want the complete experience. This goes double for the main mode, which will obviously need two more figures outside of the bundled Isabelle and Digsby if you want to experience four player games.

Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival Screen 1Mabel would be getting shoved off the podium if this was Mario Party.

With only a week away before the festival hits our doorstep, we can’t wait to put some time into the full game. It’s unique take on the party genre that Nintendo revolutionized so many years ago has the potential to be a huge hit with families or the type of gamers who want a more passive experience. My only concern so far is whether or not the less competitive nature of Amiibo Festival will take away from some of its long term appeal. Still, it’s impossible to deny that the game is shaping up to be a crowd pleaser for fans of the series, and we’ll make sure to deliver our full impressions once Animal Crossing returns to consoles on November 13th.

Super Mario Maker just released a new update that adds, checkpoints, event courses, and more!

Also to be expected, Nintendo has yet again gone an extra step to include a new easter egg. This particular easter egg in question though could be a hint at future planned updates for the game. What am I talking about you may ask? In a recent video uploaded by Gamexplain, they showed off a new easter egg that allows you to knock on the doors that you can spawn in the course maker.

Now normally this wouldn’t be anything amazing, but something actually happens when you knock on them. after a couple of knocks or so, the weird mushroom Mario will appear at the door and poke his head out at you. The big secret here is that if you do this in different art styles, the easter egg will change. You can find him wearing anything from a flying cape and raccoon tail (which are already in the game), to a frog suit, hammer bro suit, and even the penguin/ice suit! Could these just be fun little nods, or a hint at another big content update coming to the game in the future?

Check out the secret in action below and decide for yourself.

Avast me hearties!

It seems like the results of the Pirates Vs. Ninjas Splatfest are in! While pirates were absolutely crushed by ninjas in terms of popularity with 28%-72%, the pirates picked themselves up and raided the ninjas base with a win percentage of 59%-41%. This resulted in a final score of 382-318. It should also be noted that Splatfest rules have recently been changed to make it so that Popularity isn’t as powerful as most people think it is.pirates win

What’s next for Splatfest after this? Guess we just have to wait and see (WOO Pirates!).

It’s Halloween! That one day of the year where everyone gets to dress up as the things they wish they were and bask in all things spooky. Most of us will be out partying with costumed strangers and making sure they can’t remember what happened the following day, which is more the reason to stay in if you’re anything like me. So what should you play while your house is getting TP’d and egged? We’ve got you covered. Here are five recent games that are perfect for playing on Halloween.

Corpse Party: Blood Drive

Corpse Party Blood Drive Screen 1

Recently released for the PS Vita, Corpse Party is an old school survival horror / visual novel title where you take control of a Ayumi, a high school girl who has dabbled in the dark arts, as her and her unfortunate friends come to terms with the events of the previous two titles. Serving as the final chapter of the Corpse Party trilogy that started back on the PSP, Blood Drive captures that sense of hopelessness, terror and anxiousness when it comes to surviving its trap laced corridors. And if that wasn’t bad enough, monsters are constantly chasing you, all without any real weapons! Think Clock Tower 3 or Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. Don’t mistake its cute, chibi style visuals for going soft on the horror either. The game gets gory right out of the gate!

You can pick up the Everafter Edition, containing a two disc soundtrack filled with tracks from all three games, and a series spanning art book for $49.99, or the digital release on the PSN store for $39.99. For more information on this terrifying title, check out our E3 impressions here!

Fatal Frame: Maiden Of Black Water

Fatal Frame Maiden Of Black Water Screen 1

The long awaited return of the Fatal Frame series arrived last week exclusively for Wii U, and from what we played so far, it was worth the wait. Fully utilizing the Game Pad as your very own Camera Obscura, the varied cast of characters must exorcise ghosts from a series of locations by capturing photos of them with their spooky camera. New to this version however, is the ability to move the camera in real time with the Wii U’s signature controller, and providing two different perspectives between the Pad and TV screen. Ghosts are only visible through the camera lens, so keeping an eye on both screens adds an extra level of immersion not found in previous installments. Luckily, squeezing enemies into the frame has never been easier thanks to the gyroscopic controls allowing you to rotate the Game Pad to alter your perspective, all while rapid firing shots as if this were a model simulator instead of a terrifying ghost hunting game. Oh, and you’ll still want to be mindful of your surroundings, unless you want to be met with a terrible fate.

Fatal Frame: Maiden Of Black Water can be played for free up until its second chapter, (as long as you have about 16 GBs of space sitting around). If you can’t get enough, the full game will set you back $49.99, exclusively on the Wii U eShop.

Lit (iOS, Android)

Lit Screen 1

Spending money is a drag, so if your spent all your cash on bags of candy or elaborate costumes, Lit might be the way to go. All you need is a smart phone, (which I hear is a pretty popular thing to have these days,) and you’ll be able to experience a remastered version of one of WiiWare’s most memorable titles. From the minds at Wayforward, Lit puts you in the role Jake, a “mopey teenager”, who must navigate the shadows to escape his haunted school using a variety of tools, as well as his trusty flashlight. This puzzle/horror game was a big surprise when it was originally released, and it’s getting even bigger thanks to 16 brand new puzzle rooms and par challenges to test your speed and efficiency. The best part? It’s completely free! Go download it now! You’ll be glad you did.

YO-KAI WATCH (Demo Version)

Yo-Kai Watch Screen 1

It’s a shame that the launch of Level-5 and Nintendo’s next big release, YO-KAI WATCH, is just narrowly missing Halloween weekend. What better game for the holiday that celebrates all things that go bump in the night than one filled with demons, ghosts and monsters, all of which are invisible? Fortunately, we still have the demo version to sift through, which does a great job of holding us over until the game’s full release on November 6th. Being pushed as the next Pokemon, YO-KAI WATCH has players befriend the titular Yo-kai, then using them to battle their mischievous, or downright evil brethren. After uncovering the hidden demons using your appropriately named Yo-kai Watch, the game’s unique battle system kicks in. By rotating your team of six in real time while activating special moves with touch screen mini games, players can manage offense and defense in a seamless, fluid way. With each Yokai serving as a different type of curse, like causing people to argue, use the bathroom too often, or feel all around not so swell, this lighthearted RPG looks to be taking the developer’s known charm and Nintendo’s huge marketing machine to make the next big hit! Oh, but while playing, make sure not to go out at night…

Splatoon

Splatoon Splatfest Pirates vs Ninjas

Finally, if you’re not in the mood for running for your life, capturing ghosts, surviving haunted houses or hunting demons, you can always sit back with your squid pals! Halloween weekend may be an odd time for a Splatfest, but for those who are going to be indoors anyway, Splatoon‘s latest team based competition decides to answer an age old question: Which is better? Pirates, or ninjas? Until 9 PM PST on October 31st, Inklings from across the country can vote for their side, deciding which of the two historical killers are best! Making tried and true costumes as well as a great poll, will the results finally put this debate to rest? Probably not, especially when there was never a debate to begin with. Everyone knows ninjas take this battle every time. EVERY! TIME!

So there’s how we’ll be spending our Halloween! From the gory to the creepy and the downright silly, there’s plenty of content to celebrate this year’s Halloween with in between all that trick or treating. Were there any games that we missed, or will there be any particular favorite you’ll be playing on this horrifying day? Let us know below!

What’s this? 2 featured Donkey Kong courses in a row? Madness!JH1This weeks Course is a really nice re-creation of the first Level of the original SNES classic, Donkey Kong Country by Matt. Using the Super Mario World style, the level is very faithfully designed to look like Jungle Hijinx from the moment the level begins. While there’s sadly no DK house to enter, all other aspects from the DKC games are present. Even the Kong’s Banana (now coin) hoard is fully intact. JH3Even all the secret bonus rooms that you remember from the original game have been implemented in the level (can you still find them all?) All in all this may be one of the more simpler levels that I’ve highlighted, but rest assured, there’s still fun to be had.If you’re interested in playing this level you can give it a go at: 12CB-0000-0043-E295. Until next week, keep creating and playing awesome levels!JH2

Get ready, guys & gals, because Super Mario Maker is getting a small, but very important update.

The free update will be released on November 4th, and will include some much-needed additions that fans have been clamoring for, such as mid-level checkpoints and multiple power-ups in question mark boxes.

They’ll also be adding special level events, which we don’t really know anything about at this point, but ooooh new stuff.

Check out the trailer below and get hyped! Now all we need are slopes and the Angry Sun!

Nintendo has just announced the date and time for their new Splatfest, and boy is it a doozy.

The new Splatfest will take place on October 30th at 9:00 PM PST, and will go through until 9:00 PM PST, just in time for Halloween night. Which side will you choose? (Pirates all the way!)

I love Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.

To me, it’s the best Wii U game I’ve played so far. Developer Retro Studios was able to really take the concept they made with Donkey Kong Country Returns and improve upon it 10 fold. And, what better way then for fans to show their love for the game by re-making some of the levels in Super Mario Maker. Today’s Course of the Week is a re-creation of the level Sawmill Thrill by Sambob.
Sawmill Thrill 1Just like its actual counterpart, the level starts you riding a minecart outside of a run down sawmill.  After a while, you’re then blasted into the sawmill as you jump, duck, and dodge oncoming saw blades while also trying to avoid falling to your death. Those wanting to play this level, be warned. The title of this course is no joke as it’s just as a challenge as it was in the actual game. Sawmill Thrill 2Heck, I’m still trying to beat this level as of writing this article. Even though only a handful of people have played it, there’s still a course completion of 0.00%. Think you have what it takes to be the 1st one to beat it? Try it here at: 47BD-0000-0096-8DC9. Until then, Keep on playing and creating awesome levels!Sawmill Thrill 3

Nintendo has just released a brand new trailer for Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, and the result is. . . . . Disappointing.

The new trailer shows off 6 characters across 5 different courts playing a regular round of tennis before grabbing a mega mushroom and growing to giant size. Other than that, nothing else is known about the game. This is troubling for a number of reasons since the past console iterations have had plenty of other modes, courses, characters, and challenges. The other problem is that the game is set to release November 20th. (1 month away!)

Is nintendo holding back info on the game or is this all there is to see? Hopefully the first option. In the meantime, the best thing to do is remain cautiously optimistic and check out the trailer yourself.
