Seems today is the day to release all the trailers we will see during E3 2013. Maybe this will make room for more gameplay footage on stage. Square Enix released their trailer for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13. The cutscenes are always a joy to watch, even when I don’t know what the hell is going on story-wise.

Some of the in-game footage looks a little rough but you can’t fault that due to the compressed video footage in the trailer. With Square Enix stretching Final Fantasy 13 so far, I hope that this is the last time we see Lightning strike so we can move on to new adventures.

Whoa whoa whoa whoa…whoa. I think I can already call E3 2013 best of show. Square Enix just blew my mind with this trailer for Murdered: Soul Suspect.

This announcement is the purest definition of Teaser. There is barely any information online about this game. What I have been able to find out is this. Murdered is an action adventure, puzzle game published by Square and developed by one of their internal studios, though which one is a mystery. It was first teased back in February where the Square official Twitter posted “What is the hardest case to solve?”. Today we got this trailer.

Lets hope we got ourselves another L.A. Noire type game on our hands.

More info from us about this during our E3 coverage. Murdered: Soul Suspect is confirmed released on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3. No next gen release has been announced yet.

A new Final Fantasy Tactics experience is on its way for iOS and Android users. Square-Enix today launched a website accepting registrations for the new title, called Final Fantasy Tactics S.

The game is set to put a social spin on the Tactics series, though it’s not known just what that means at this point. According to the Final Fantasy Network, the game will feature designs by Ryoma Ito, and races, jobs, and monsters from the 2008 DS title Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift.

Sounds amazing, right? It’s not all good news here. Square-Enix has partnered with mobile publisher Mobage for Tactics S, a company infamous for terrible use of in-app purchases. Now, I’ve got nothing against in-app purchases, but when they’re essential in order to get the most out of a title, I could certainly do without. Just charge me $10 or $15 (for a premium title like this) and be done with it.

Little else is known about the game at this time (including a release date), but we’ll be sure to keep you up to date on this one. If you can read Japanese, head here to preregister.

Yesterday was a day of fools, with countless internet pranks and viral marketings. Valve announced Half-Life 3 and Reddit bought Team Fortress 2. So you can understand my, caution, when I saw that the trailer for Thief 4 had leaked. Well, turns out it is legitimate and some of the devs are slightly pissed. Take a watch with me!

After this trailer leaked, the guys over at Eidos scrambled and put it up officially on their website.

The Thief series of games puts players in a 18th or 19th century steampunk world, as a master thief (hard to believe, a game called thief where you play a thief!). Thief 2 is known as one of the greatest stealth games of all time.

No official release date or anything else besides this fancy trailer have been announced. You know that when more information does come out, we will be sure to keep you up to date!

Just watching this trailer gave me all kinds of goosebumps and took me back to the ripe age of 11, when Final Fantasy X first released, and when I explored the world of Spira for the first time.

As promised, Square-Enix today released the first trailer for their upcoming HD rereleases of Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X2. As we noted last week, the games will be releasing in North America later this year; PS3 players will get both titles on a single disc, while Vita owners will buy each game separately. We’ll give you more info as soon as we have it, as I’m excited as hell for this one.

Watch the announcement trailer below, and let us know what you think!

The official trailer won’t be released until Monday, but at least we know it’s coming.

Square-Enix today revealed that the anticipated HD rereleases of Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 will be releasing in territories outside Japan. No release dates have been set, but the games will release in Japan, Europe, and North America, later this year.

PS3 players will get both games on one disc, while Vita owners (all four of you) will have to purchase each chapter separately.

I’m looking forward to this one. Final Fantasy X originally released when I was just 11 years old, and while I played it back then, my experience with the game is nothing but a distant memory. I do remember loving every minute of it however, so I’d jump at the opportunity to return to Spira.

Read the press release below, and let us know if you’re excited! Look for the trailer on March 25th!

In less than one week, Nathan Drake Lara Croft will adventure once again. The latest instalment in the long running, once amazing Tomb Raider franchise is set to hit shelves on March 5th.

Reviews have been rolling in, and if the universal acclaim is any indication, this is one tomb you’ll definitely want to raid yourself. Square Enix today released a new trailer for the game, showcasing the rebirth and reimagining of one of gaming’s most recognizable characters. Just like previous videos, this preview is impressive as hell; watch the new trailer below, and let us know what you think!

This is one reboot that I’m really looking forward to. How about you?

It looks like the folks at Square Enix are nearly ready to rerelease Final Fantasy XIV. The game initially launched in September 2010 in an apparently unfinished state; the title was full of balancing issues, glitches, and gamebreaking bugs.

Square Enix saw something in that mess of a game however, and decided to keep working on it (after apologizing to everyone that paid for it of course). The game is inching closer and closer to its wide release, and the company has released a new trailer showcasing the exploration elements of the title. Check it out below, and let us know what you think!

Want to give it a try? PC and PS3 betas are both taking applications on the game’s official website.

What do you think? Did you play the initial release of Final Fantasy XIV? Are you willing to give A Realm Reborn a shot?

This is some freaking exciting news.

One of my favourite games last year was Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Square-Enix developed an insanely awesome FPS-RPG that turned out to be one of the best shooters in recent memory. It also made me completely forget the mediocre mess that was Deus Ex: Invisible War.

CBS Films announced today that they’re developing a movie based on Human Revolution. Scott Derrickson (Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose) will write and direct the film, with Roy Lee, Adrian Askarieh, and John P. Middleton producing. While the Deus Ex: Human Revolution is the third game in the series, the title will serve as the template for this first movie. The game won over 100 industry awards last year, so let’s hope the film doesn’t follow the typical video game movie trend.

What do you think of the news? Excited? Who would you like to see in the role of Adam?

Square Enix today announced pre-orders for the upcoming reboot of the Uncharted Tomb Raider franchise.

Three editions of the game have been revealed, as well as your standard array of different pre-order bonuses from different retailers.

Tomb Raider of course gets a standard edition with no goodies. A ‘Survival’ edition will also be released, including the game, a map of the island the game takes place on, a download of the game’s soundtrack, and a survival pouch.

A Deluxe edition has also been announced, which includes everything from the ‘Survival’ edition,  featuring a 6″ Lara Croft figure, and some metal casing for all your goodies.

Unfortunately, no photos of the upcoming editions appear to have been released.

If you’ve been keeping up with the game at all, it really does look fantastic. I’m looking forward to picking it up when it releases on March 5th. Check out some gameplay below and let us know what you think!

This is some dedication right here.

Little Big Planet 2 has seen some impressive stuff since its release in January 2011: from a Pac-Man remake, Portal adaptation, plenty of FPS renditions, full on RPG titles, and many more. This has to be the most impressive labor of love I’ve seen however.

Jamie Colliver, Final-Fantasy fiend has taken six months of his life and recreated Final Fantasy VII in Little Big Planet 2. Not a level, not a piece or a chapter, but the entire freaking game. From the bombing mission that opens the classic title to the shocking death of Aerith, and even your final battle with Sephiroth: every bit of dialogue, every piece of music. It’s the whole experience.

Embedded below are a couple of Jamie’s videos. You can find even more on his YouTube channel. Thanks to PSU for letting us know about this one.

Eariler this week, we reported that a new teaser site from Square Enix seemed to be hinting at something related to the DS cult classic, The World Ends With You. While the website is still counting down, it seems like Square accidentally let the cat out of the bag, and the big secret was apparently something we never expected… Or wanted.

Thanks to a listing on the Japanese iTunes store, an album titled, “The World Ends With You- Crossover”, listed remixed tunes from the original and additional songs from the Kingdom Hearts 3D soundtrack which are set for an apparent iOS remake. The listing was taken down, but not before some crafty Japanese took screenshots of the page.

Oops!

But is that all there is to the story? Since the leak, Brian Gray, (@brilingual,) one of the translators for TWEWY, tweeted the following:

“before everyone decides that the #twewy coundown is over, they might want to wait for the countdown to be over”.

The countdown is still going, so we won’t know for sure if this is all there is to the story until the clock hits zero. It’s pretty strange that we seem to keep getting iOS releases when most gamers seem to prefer them on their gaming consoles. I understand that everyone and their mothers have iPhones and iPads  at this point, but that larger install base doesn’t mean everyone is going to care. Especially when games like Final Fantasy Mega Man are iOS exclusive, especially the latter where its fans have been begging for a release and expected it on an actual gaming platform.

Is it too late to hope for a sequel? And not for my phone or tablet? Pretty please Square?

Final Fantasy sequels used to be non-existent. But after X-2 set the wheels in motion, each major entry in the series has had one, with some of the retro ones getting updates for good measure. Most recently, Final Fantasy XIII-2 attempted to rectify many of the problems gamers had with the first game in the series while expanding on the story of Lightning and her friends. While the ending of the second go around left little doubt in anyone’s mind, it seems as if another sequel is on the way.

A new teaser site is promising an announcement regarding Lightning’s future to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the legendary series. Below are the details listed on the site:

FINAL FANTASY XIII TEAM TO PRESENT NEW DIRECTION FOR THE SAGA OF KEY CHARACTER, LIGHTNING

The “Lightning Saga” that started with the release of FINAL FANTASY XIII, has achieved a cumulative shipment of over 9.6 million units; and in May 2012 FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 was brought to conclusion with the add-on content entitled “Lightning’s Story: Requiem of the Goddess”.

Key members of the FINAL FANTASY XIII development team including the Producer, Director and Art Director, are in preparations to present new information about the direction of Lightning’s story. This presentation will take place at an event in Tokyo to celebrate FINAL FANTASY 25th Anniversary, on 1st September 2012.

While it’s no surprise a sequel is coming like I mentioned, I wasn’t the biggest fan of XIII. While XIII-2 made improvements, at this point I feel like Squeenix is treating XIII like that popular radio song that you can’t stand. They’ll just keep shoving it out there over and over again until it catches on. And where the hell is Versus XIII?

Check back here on September 1st for all the juicy details on Lightning’s future. Whatever it may be.

One of the most beloved original DS titles just might have a follow up on the way!

The World Ends With You, the popular action RPG brought to us courtesy of Square Enix and many of the key people that gave us Kingdom Hearts, was praised by fans and critics alike for its stand out art style, unique touch screen based game play and catchy music, so much so that fans have been begging for a sequel ever since. Well, we might not have to wait too much longer, at least not if this teaser site is any indication.

While nothing solid is mentioned on the site as of yet, the font and music sure as hell reminds me of the title. When you keep in mind that the latest entry of the Kingdom Hearts series, Dream Drop Distance, created a new Traverse Town that featured numerous World Ends With You characters, it’s obvious that someone at Square is listening to the cries of its fans.

I guess we’ll just have to wait until Monday at midnight if that clock is to be believed. Until then, get hyped!

Switching what seems a decent amount of identities since its conception –from Black Lotus to True Crime: Hong Kong, Sleeping Dogs is what Square Enix is calling this open world action game set in Hong Kong. Whatever Square Enix saw in this title that was worth saving from being shelved, all of us should thank them for picking up the pieces Activision left behind.

Sleeping Dogs does its best to bring the Hong Kong cinema feel to open world gaming. What we get is a story of an undercover agent Wei Shen teetering on the edge, in-house fighting with the Sun On Yee Triads –which is based of the real Triad gang Sun Yee On— and a lot of double crosses. For the most part, United Front Games nails the story in making it feel like most Hong Kong action movies. There are some slight pacing issues in the middle of the game that made me want to just move on with things, but the hooks were in me so deep that I looked past the slow parts. How it all ends also leaves a little more to be desired. Maybe that is my biggest gripe with it all. Sleeping Dogs could have pushed the envelope more but seemed to err on the safe side.

The story was able to shine in Sleeping Dogs due in part to the great cast of voice actors. Just look at this stellar cast:

Everyone nailed their lines and since it seems everyone did their lines in the studio together, there weren’t any long, awkward pauses between characters in the game. Edison Chen seems to channel his inner Bobcat Goldthwait at times. Could you picture Jackie’s character modeled and voiced by Bobcat? Maybe Police Academy 8 will be set in Hong Kong? All I could see when Uncle Po was on screen was James Hong as Lo Pan in Big Trouble in Little China. “They have returned. And this time they are not alone. Egg Shen is with them. Little bastard sorcerer has brought them through the Bog of the Dead Trees.” See? He was foreshadowing meeting Wei Shen in Sleeping Dogs!

What should have been an amazing thing fizzled with Emma Stone’s character. It’s not that she didn’t do a good job, cause she really did. It’s the fact that love interests were whittled down to a two-bit part with the only thing coming out of it being the special bonus to finding items on your mini-map –health statues, lock boxes, security cameras, etc. I would have liked to have seen the ladies play a bigger role in the story of Sleeping Dogs. Having them be something an enemy can use against Wei would give have given the story a more emotional sting to it.

The action in the game is great. Utilizing the school of combat mechanics from Rocksteady’s handbook, dispatching tough guys trying to stomp a mudhole in you is a lot of fun. Although you can sit back and just mash the counter button when enemies turn red, it will be incredibly boring. Instead, the more you treat this like a martial arts movie scene, the more fun you will get out of the combat. There’s enough moves that you will acquire throughout your Hong Kong adventures that it won’t feel that repetitive. You could always use a table saw to slice someone’s face. Or, you could drop their body on some swordfish heads. Death by swordfish, such a terrible way to perish.

Guns are rarely used in Sleeping Dogs, which I love a lot. The few times guns come into play, the controls are a little on the loose side. Thanks to the generous auto-aim, it’s not much of an issue. Sitting behind cover will get you killed so your best option is to slide over cover and enter slo-mo mode, picking off everyone around you with ease. The shootouts that happen during the vehicle chase scenes are a lot of fun but I can see where shooting the tires out of a car for the 15th time can get monotonous. Still, having everything go into slo-mo while leaning out the driver side window making a car flip over from blowing the tires out was a joy for me to do. Boat chases weren’t as fun but that’s because I wanted the boats to flip 20 feet in the air like the cars. I know, how selfish of me.

The promise of quick transitions from combat to chase didn’t quite translate well from paper to video game. Sure, going from a shoot-out in a warehouse to racing down a highway in one mission worked, but when Wei Shen spends 8 seconds too long playing with his crotch rocket, I get a prompt telling me not to lose the person I’m chasing before I even get the damn bike out of park. The animation time of Wei starting up a bike could have been cut down to 3 seconds to make it feel more like an action-packed scene instead of Wei revving the engine trying to look cool for absolutely no one.

Chasing people on foot was great. Free running, sliding over tables, running up walls made it really feel like a good foot chase scene. You’ll still get some issues with the person of interest you’re chasing slowing down enough for you to catch back up if you screw up a button prompt to vault over a table faster. This is still a video game, after all. Wouldn’t be any fun if you had to start over at the very generous checkpoints every time you ran into a wall or jumped up the wrong railing. Vehicle chases are a little more frustrating since not only is it a pain to drive a car in Sleeping Dogs, the camera can also gets away from you since it’s really sensitive. If you can help it, use a bike. They were much easier for me to control.

Now, not having access to the console version of Sleeping Dogs, I can’t say if the PC version is better. I can say that it looks amazing to the eyes, if your PC can handle it. My specs for the system used to play Sleeping Dogs with everything set to medium were:

AMD Phenom II X4 925 2.8GHz

8GB of RAM

ATI 5770 Video Card

Even with some of the assets in the world being flat jpeg images, when using the HD texture pack option, Hong Kong looks sexy to the eyes. You spend most of the time playing at night even though there is a day/night cycle, at least to me. It just seemed like most of the time it was either night time, day time with a cloudy overcast and raining, or night time with rain. Everything looked really good and made me feel like this is what Hong Kong would look like having never stepped foot there myself. Neon lights, street vendors yelling at me to buy cheap suits or food and the random people just chatting about whatever was on their A.I. programmed minds. I found myself driving around the massive areas you can access for at least an hour just to take in all the beauty. If I could only remember to drive on the left side of the road, I wouldn’t have flown 20 feet off my bike every 10 minutes.

For all the side missions you are given in Sleeping Dogs, I never felt implored to go and do them. Racing cars, collecting money from deadbeats, helping random strangers with their issues and hacking security cameras to bust dealers from the comfort of your apartment never felt engaging enough for me to do more than a handful of each.

Unless you want more money or ‘Face XP’ to get access to more choices in the clothes you can wear or the cars you can drive, the benefits you get from doing these side missions don’t outweigh going straight through the story missions. The bonuses and upgrades you can pick from the skill trees you get just by going through the motions of the story is more than enough to make it through to the end. At least you can mop all the unfinished business when you complete the game.

Sleeping Dogs is a open world game that will stand in the limelight with such notables as GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption as an amazing accomplishment. Over the top action, good story, amazing voice work, and the immersive world make this a surprise hit of 2012 and a serious contender for Game of the Year.

The mysterious to-me game, Sleeping Dogs, got it’s launch trailer today. Take a gander with your eye holes below.

Despite all the content floating around out there, it was still hard for me to get a major read on how this game will turn out. This trailer seemingly filled that void. It has a major Asian mob movie feeling (DUUUUH). If you have ever seen City of Violence then you got an idea of what I’m getting at. The gameplay looks like it will please all the True Crime fans out there. I’m not saying this is a day one purchase but definitely keep it in your sights.

With the release of Sleeping Dogs looming, Square Enix decided to let loose another walkthrough video to tease us even more. This time, United Front Games’ Producer Dan Sochan narrates a mission that has Wei Shen doling out some street justice for Golden Koi’s owner, Mrs. Chu.

From the driving to the amazing combat scenarios that play out in the mission walkthrough, I am yearning to play Sleeping Dogs. All the points are hit for an action movie lover such as myself. Fast cars with the sense of darting in and out of traffic at really unsafe speeds, Seamless transitions from cutscene to action, fluid combat that makes Batman lurk in the dark filled with envy and story beats that any Hong Kong action film fan would be happy with. Ok, enough with the talking. Just push the damn button already!

Sleeping Dogs releases on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 on August 14th, which is still not soon enough for me.

Heroes of Ruin seems great when you skim the surface. A dungeon crawling, loot based game that’s portable with actual controls instead of using your fingers to manipulate a virtual D-Pad or buttons is perfect. Almost too perfect. As with most of the games that fall into this category, the addiction is hard to deny. Searching every corner of the current dungeon you’re in looking for that one piece of loot that will make the difference in some of your stats is more important than the actual battles in these cavernous mazes.

Loot seemed to be the only thing keeping me going though. With a story that is too generic, Heroes of Ruin fails to stand out in the crowd of typical fantasy stories. Trying to find the lost relic that will revive the king in the land of “insert name here” while trying to figure out who is trying to deceive you in order to wield that power has been seen all too often and recently with games such as Diablo 3. Since games that fall into the loot finding category are never about the story, I can’t fault Heroes of Ruin too much on that respect.

I was enamored by every piece of loot I found even if it wasn’t something my Gunslinger could use. n-Space was smart enough to incorporate an easy way to sell items in your inventory, at a lower cost than selling at a vendor in town. Considering that you can only hold 34 items, which include the ones equipped in your inventory, you will be using this feature a lot. Near the last quarter of Heroes of Ruin, selling loot found in the dungeons won’t be an option due to your gold capping out at 99,999. This makes searching for loot, what makes games of this caliber fun to play, a painstaking task. Hovering over every piece of loot to find something you can use that is better than what you have equipped becomes tedious. Considering you would be better off just spending all your gold at the character specific vendors in town for gear, such tasks seems worthless.

Playing as the Gunslinger, everything felt a little too easy. A perk in one of the three skill trees lets the gunner have a good chance to knock back enemies with each shot as well as damage enemies close to each other. As soon as I heard a any noise at all, I would let loose with my pistols and let the auto-aim do its thing. I tried playing as a Vindicator class, think paladin in World of Warcraft, and combat was still easy but I had to adjust my tactics a bit and use more abilities than the Gunslinger. The only trouble I ended up in while playing Heroes of Ruin was getting stuck in attacking animations. Not being able to quickly react to anything is something developers have to get in their head as being a bad thing. Yes, your animations for the character models are pretty but having me locked into said animation is not doing the player any favors.

Multiplayer seems to work for the most part. In the time that I played for the review, I ran into very little lag and finding games was actually easy. I tried using the mic to talk to others that where in the game with me but it seems that people have the option to use voice chat turned off. Either that, or they didn’t understand how to turn it on in the options menu. The one thing that actually made my online experience with strangers horrible in Heroes of Ruin was the way loot was setup for online play. I would barely get any of the loot since the people I was playing with would just take it as soon as it dropped, even if they didn’t need it. Even though the best loot is usually at the vendors in town, it’s still annoying to have people join your game, steal all the loot and then quit. The separate loot system is the one thing Blizzard got right with Diablo 3.

Diablo 3 is wearing thin and Torchlight 2 is nowhere in sight. What’s a gamer to do while waiting for Runic to toss a bone our way? Heroes of Ruin may seem like the answer but ends up being nothing more than a temporary fix for the dungeon crawling loot junkies.

In a stunning “out-of-left-field” move, CBS Films has optioned the phenomenally successful “Deus Ex” series of video games and are actually involving the Square team in the development of the film. Roy Lee and Geekscape friend Adrian Askarieh are attached to produce with John P. Middleton executive producing.

CBS Films C0-President, Terry Press was quoted:

As is clear from the wild success of the game, Square Enix and Eidos-Montréal know how to exceed their audience’s expectations by engineering incredible worlds, No one knows Human Revolution like the team that created it and we look forward to working with them from day one to make a film adaptation worthy of the Deus Ex name.

So they’re bringing the whole Square team on board. That is one of the smartest decisions a film studio can make in wanting to do a video game adaptation. It is a trend that is starting to make sense (just look at ‘Marvel’). The people who create these worlds know what should go into the story and characters from a fan perspective. Deus Ex is one of the most powerful narrative driven games out there so I for one am very excited to see what comes of this.

Another week on the East Coast, another hot ass week. Perfect time to stay in the nice cool air-conditioned house and play some of this week’s recommendations.

Spelunky (XBLA – 1200 MS Points. Original version free on PC)

Tired of Super Meat Boy or Trials Evolution and want another game to kick you in the balls? Well Spelunky has got you covered this weekend. 2D platforming with rouge-like style is perfect for punishing you while getting caught in the repeating cycle of playing the same level over and over. This ends up being a good thing for Spelunky since there is so much to see that the only way to see everything is to risk exploring the levels and hope you survive long enough to find all the secrets. Just don’t dawdle too long or the ghost will one-hit kill you.

Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy (3DS – $39.99)

Somehow, making a Final Fantasy rhythm game actually works. It helps that the music Square Enix decided to put into Theatrhythm is the original music selected from Final Fantasy to Final Fantasy 13 and not some sort of new style remixes that mix it with speed metal. Ugh. With all the action that happens beneath the notes you must press on screen, it’s a shame that you can never take your eyes off the notes long enough to enjoy the visual masterpiece playing out during the song. Curious as to see what characters people put in their teams.

McPixel (Pc, Linux, OSX – $9.99)

I could try to explain this game but all you really need is the trailer to see just how insane McPixel is:

Going into this thinking that logic will help you solve the puzzles in the required 20 seconds will be your undoing. Usually the most stupid answer is the right choice.

When seeking out the voice and motion capture actress to fill the role of the leader of “The Saints”, a deadly team of assassins that dress as nuns in Hitman: Absolution, the smart play would be to go after someone with experience in killing, in movies that is.

Vivica Fox is a good choice in my opinion. Having the training during the filming of Kill Bill makes it easier for Vivica Fox to take some of the bumps and scrapes that one would assume would happen during motion capture for an action game as she says so in this video interview:

What’s a mystery is if The Saints are actually in the game and if so, why show us the team getting decimated by Agent 47? The only person you see not get killed is the character played by Vivica Fox. Did she survive? I guess we will all have to wait until Hitman: Absolution launches November 20th, 2012 to find out.

July 4th is just a day of days. Not only did we get a new AC3 trailer, depicting our country rising up against the British, but our eye holes are graced with the confirmation of the FFVII PC rumors that have been going around. Gaze upon a trailer, about a group of freedom fighters rising up against the evil Shinra Corp.

Unlike the BADASS AC3 trailer, this one falls a tad short. With the announcement we also get the specs for the PC, which reveal a few fears I’ve had.

-Microsoft Windows XP/Vista/7 (32/64-bit)
-2GHz Processor or faster
-1GB RAM
-DirectX 9-compatible graphic card

So all the rumblings that this is a HD remake or a full redo like what we witnessed in the PS3 tech demo have been debunked. What this ends up being is a PC re-release available through the Square Online store. Yeah the extra online features are nice, but I have serious doubts it can compete with some of the community mods of the game, like the Final Fantasy VII Remix that is floating out there that comes with a stack of Hi-Res texture mods.

COME ON SQUARE! WE WANT A FF7 GAME THAT LOOKS LIKE ADVENT CHILDREN!

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Portal should consider itself properly wood. Quantum Conundrum draws from the illustrious puzzler in many decadent ways, but also manages to stand on its own as a love letter to Kim Swift’s uproariously popular creation. Of course, that makes plenty of sense, as this new first-person puzzler is a project from the Portal lead herself. While it could have easily stood as a supplement to Swift’s outstanding work on Portal, it offers a satisfying and mind-bending journey on its own merit.

You’re Professor Fitz Quadwrangle’s nephew, and your wacky uncle has somehow managed to find himself trapped in the mythical dimension where all of our lost belongings end up. Your car keys? That dimension. The awesome Batman socks you bought and planned on wearing every day? Professor Quadwrangle’s hanging out there with them. But it’s your job to rescue him — with his disembodied voice, of course. And while you don’t have a name or any character development to speak of, you’re instrumental in ensuring the good Professor’s escape.

Unfortunately, he hasn’t exactly made this easy on himself — or anyone, for that matter. See, he spends most of his time tooling around with interdimensional experiments. So “scattered” if you will amongst Quadwrangle Manor are several different incomplete tests and their results, which ultimately ends up in the creation of four alternate dimensions being strewn about the house. In order to rescue your uncle, you’ll need to put your wits to the test (as well as those handy dandy problem solving skills).

Across four very different dimensions, all of which feature alternate rules of physics and other constraints, you’ll pack along Quadwrangle’s invention, the IS device (interdimensional shift device — a glove instead of a Portal gun) and Quadwrangle’s orders to guide you through all four of the varying areas. You’ll need to be quite nimble about switching between each dimension: where one might feature heavier objects, or “fluffy” items that bounce higher than others in the heavier dimension, and while it’s usually quite obvious what needs to be done to complete each puzzle, it’s a toss-up sometimes as to how you need to accomplish it. Where exactly do you need to toss this crate? At which time, precisely, do you need to make your descent into the laser-infested walkway?

It sounds like the stuff of any great platformer, and you’d be right in thinking it quite often relies on those kinds of sensibilities to accomplish much. It never claims to be anything more than a collection of sandbox-styled puzzles loosely connected via Quadwrangle’s dimension-sized dilemma, and the fact that this game never takes itself too seriously provides fuel for players to keep moving forward, even when puzzle solutions aren’t so readily apparent.

Quantum Conundrum infuses a sense of childlike wonder into each of its interdimensional areas, and a fantastic performance by John de Lancie (whom you might recognize from Star Trek) as Professor Quadwrangle spice it up in ways that elevate this puzzler beyond that of mere “indie” status and into an area that doesn’t quite touch Portal’s status as a cult icon, but into the stratosphere of praise you likely thought it’d end up. It’s just a shame it ends so abruptly. Might we be seeing another of these types of games from Swift in the future? We hope so — especially if the same kind of quirky humor is present in any future endeavors. We all know that’s what we came for, anyway.

A couple of days ago, over on the GOG forums, a user was doing his impression of Horatio Caine and dug up some interesting information.

Turns out Square Enix, just days prior, purchased the domain www.finalfantasyviipc.com. Currently it just forwards to the main Square page, but our detective over at GOG did some more digging. When he looked at the public cache for the site, he found this image. Click to enlarge.

This appears to be a PR release for the game, but with all the formatting removed due to google caching.

The price listed on the image is £7.99/€9.99. Roughly $13 USD. No official word yet from square.

Personally I am very excited if this turns out to be legit. Lets hope they sprung for HD graphics.

Check out their public who is record here.
