Briefly: During last night’s New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square, Sony showed off a cool new trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The footage is introduced by Stan Lee himself (who just turned 91), and offers us yet another look at Jamie Foxx as Electro in the film.

Take a look at the footage below, and let us know: what do you think of the Electro design? Does he look bad-ass, or a little too Mr. Freeze (thanks for that one Daniel)?

We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.

It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.

Briefly: The latest issue of Empire Magazine is now on newsstands, and along with a bad-ass cover that reveals a new piece of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the issue also debuted two new stills from The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Take a look at the new shots below, and let us know what you think! Are you looking forward to The Amazing Spider-Man 2? What did you think of the first Amazing Spider-Man?

That clearly looks like Dane DeHaan’s Harry Osbourne standing below Dillon in that second shot, doesn’t it? Do we smell a team-up (probably)?

Briefly: Sony has just debuted a new teaser poster for The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

The image states that “His greatest battle begins,” making me wonder just how many battle’s he’s had… before realizing that the answer is “just one.”

In any case, it’s a pretty cool poster (but not as cool as that actually good international trailer from last week). Take a look at it below, and let us know what you think!

Briefly: It seems like we just can’t get enough The Amazing Spider-Man today! First, two spinoff films were announced (head here for that one), and now a new international trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has hit the web, and it’s substantially better than the domestic trailer released earlier this week.

This trailer gives us more of everything. We get a better look at all of the film’s villains (and the Green Goblin STILL looks dumb), see more interaction between Peter and Aunt May than we saw in the entire first film, and even Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacey gets a (cute) line in. This preview leaves me a little more hopeful for the full feature than the earlier trailer did, and as always, that suit looks bad-ass in motion.

Take a look at the international trailer below, and let us know what you think! The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theatres on May 2nd!

Briefly: It was just last month that we learned of Sony’ planning to expand the Spider-Man universe with even more sequels and spin-offs, and the studio has just announced the first information for two of those spinoff films.

A five person team of Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner, Ed Solomon, and Drew Goddard have formed a “brain trust” to continue the franchise with a consistent tone (and connections between each film). According to the press release, “Kurtzman & Orci & Pinkner are writing the screenplay for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, which the studio hopes Webb will return to direct; the film will go into production next fall for release on June 10, 2016. In addition, the team will build on the cinematic foundation laid by Webb, Arad, and Tolmach in the first two movies. They will expand the franchise as Kurtzman & Orci & Solomon will write the screenplay for Venom, which Kurtzman will direct; also, Goddard will write, with an eye to direct, The Sinister Six, focusing on the villains in the franchise.”

It’s interesting to see Drew Goddard’s name on that list, as the talented writer/director was recently tapped to write (and maybe direct) the Daredevil series for Netflix. In any case, it certainly raises my hopes for a film about six villains that haven’t been introduced yet.

You can take a look at the full press release here. Are you excited at the prospect of these films? Or is Sony simply making promises that they can’t keep? Is the Spider-Man franchise growing too quickly (remember Venom in Spider-Man 3? Sound out below!

Briefly: Remember that low-res spy shot of the new The Amazing Spider-Man 2 poster that we showed you last week? Preceding the debut of the film’s first trailer this Thursday, that poster has been officially released.

It (of course) shows off Electro, but also totally features a HUGE, mechanized looking Rhino, and a Martin Short in The Santa Clause 3-esque Green Goblin.

In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough. Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.

Briefly: Sony sold over 1 million PS4 consoles in the unit’s first 24 hours of availability, and tonight, the company revealed another milestone.

Since it’s debut in North America on November 15th, the Playstation 4 has sold over 2.1 million units. Here’s the official word, straight from SCE President Andrew House:

In what is shaping up to be a historic year for gamers, I’m delighted to share an important new milestone with you. PS4’s North American debut on November 15th was PlayStation’s largest ever, with more than one million gamers picking up a PS4 in just 24 hours. Now, with PS4’s global launch expanding to a total of 32 countries worldwide, including Europe and Latin America, I’m proud to announce that more than 2.1 million PS4s have been sold.

It’s an impressive and record-setting accomplishment for our company and for our industry, and we couldn’t have done it without you. I want to personally thank PlayStation fans, both old and new, for your vote of confidence. The best part: the PS4 journey has just begun. In addition to an incredible lineup of PS4 games from the best developers in the world, we will continue to introduce valuable new features and services to PS4 in the months and years ahead.

While PS4’s capabilities will continue to evolve, our commitment to gamers and breakthrough entertainment remains steadfast. We believe that videogames represent the pinnacle of artistry and entertainment, and we will work tirelessly to make sure that PlayStation remains the best place to play.

Thank you for your passion and your support — we couldn’t have done this without you.

Have you picked up a PS4 yet? Are you planning on getting one any time soon? Readers, feel free to add my PSN ID: CaptainK17! See you online!

Briefly: An eagle-eyed theatregoer snapped a photo of the first official poster for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 after a showing of Disney’s Frozen tonight.

The image looks to feature our first official look at Paul Giamatti’s Rhino, as well as the Green Goblin (wasn’t he supposed to be a surprise villain). The photo is pretty low quality, but we’ll be sure to share a higher-res version as soon as it’s available.

Briefly: The PS4 and Playstation Vita are a match made in heaven.

Seriously, I’ve already used Remote Play substantially more than I thought I would (though I’m still having trouble making it work on another network). I played through Contrast almost exclusively using Remote Play as the first Bioshock was being experienced on the television, and I didn’t feel impeded by it whatsoever.

The biggest success of Remote Play? The fact that I touched my Vita, which is something that I haven’t done in nearly a year.

If you’re in the UK, it appears that you’ll actually be able to pick up a bundle that includes both a PS4 and a PS Vita. No price or release date has been set, as the bundle hasn’t been officially announced, but a photo of the bundle has appeared in the latest issue of MCV.

We’ll be sure to let you know wham the release date is set, and if the bundle will be coming to other regions! Would you pick this one up, or is Remote Play not a good enough reason to own a Vita (though I do hear that Tearaway should be a system seller)?

Briefly: There may be three The Amazing Spider-Man films currently in the works, but that’s not all that Sony has planned for the franchise.

During a presentation to investors earlier this week, Sony Pictures Entertainment Co-Chairman Amy Pascal stated that “We are going to access Marvel’s full world of Spider-Man characters, so be on the lookout for new heroes and villains.”

Deadline reports that Sony Pictures Entertainment chief Michael Lynton later added “We do very much have the ambition about creating a bigger universe around Spider-Man. There are a number of scripts in the works.”

The Spider-Man franchise is obviously a hugely popular one (so far grossing over 3-billion dollars worldwide), but did anyone else already feel as though Sony was getting a little sequel happy when they announced three new films at once? Now there are spinoffs in the works too? Does this mean we’ll be seeing a franchise-related film every six-months sometime in the next few years?

If all the films were high enough quality, then I’d be all for it. The Amazing Spider-Man was definitely a disappointment however, so I’m not really sure how to feel about this development.

Are you looking forward to more films in the franchise? What heroes or villains would you like to see receive spinoffs? Sound out below!

The best promises are the ones you can’t keep.

Briefly: Well, the PS4 is a hit.

Sony revealed earlier today that in the first 24 hours of availability, the company’s newest console sold over 1 million units.

“PS4 was designed with an unwavering commitment to gamers, and we are thrilled that consumer reaction has been so phenomenal,” said Andrew House, President and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. “Sales remain very strong in North America, and we expect continued enthusiasm as we launch the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Latin America on November 29. We are extremely grateful for the passion of PlayStation fans and thank them for their continued support.”

In comparison, Nintendo’s latest home console, the Wii U, sold just 400,000 units in its first weekthe PS3 sold 197,000 in its first two weeks, and the Xbox 360 sold through 326,000 in its first two weeks.

Those are some pretty fantastic numbers! I waited outside my local Wal-Mart to get my hands on one (check out my unboxing here), and am loving it so far!

Did you pick up a console? How are you feeling about it so far? Feel free to add me on PSN at (CaptainK17)!

Briefly: Sony has revealed a trio of new stills from next year’s anticipated The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

None of the new images reveal much of the feature, but we do get another look at Jamie Fox as Electro, Peter and Gwen staring longingly at each other, and… Spider-Man playing a fireman.

I hate it.

Sure, it could work in a comic book as a quick little gag or a panel to lighten up a serious situation, but it just looks silly here. Maybe the image is out of context and everything is much better than it looks here… but I’m not holding my breath.

Take a look at the new images below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the film! The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theatres on May 2nd, 2014. The first trailer will release next month with The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Briefly: Following the impressive “Perfect Day” commercial that Sony released last week, the company has debuted another ad, this time promoting the legendary Playstation brand as “for the players since 1995”.

The video takes us through the history of Playstation and the ever-changing world around it. It certainly makes you feel nostalgic for the good ol’ days of split screen gaming, but also makes me really, really long for the release of the PS4 (whether or not I’ll be getting one on launch day is still up in the air).

The ad has been produced with fantastic attention to detail – note that the aspect ratios and quality of video changes as time progresses, among other things. Take a look at the video below, and let us know if you’ll be picking up Sony’s new console!

PAX Prime is over and it’s time to sift through the ashes! The brain trust of Noah Roman, Garrett Medina and Ash Paulsen join me this week to discuss everything that they witnessed in Seattle! What were the highlights from the weekend? How is PAX different than E3? Is the 2DS still a joke? What games are we looking forward to the most? Were there any indies that jumped out? Does Garrett play too much Pokémon? And Ash and Garrett talk about meeting Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune! It’s a packed episode of video game talk so you’re not going to want to miss it!

Where there is war, there are emotionless individuals behind the scenes working for both sides. To these individuals, it doesn’t matter who wins in the end, as long as the checks keep clearing. In Killzone: Mercenary, you are one of these profiteers.

devkit-20130718-0209_1377024472

Arran Danner is your name, and doing some dirty work for some cold hard Vektans (the currency in the Killzone universe) is the game. The main campaign of Killzone: Mercenary takes Arran through many of the events of the Killzone trilogy. Even if you can’t remember anything from the previous titles, the story is pretty easy to follow since there is not much there to begin with. Trying to make Arran have doubts about what he’s doing is tough when the character never talks. Being a first-person-shooter also means you’ll never see his face, so any emotional tug on the heartstrings the developers want to happen fall flat.

Missions in Killzone: Mercenary are separated into nine areas that all seem fairly short. Completing the campaign in around five hours was disappointing for me, but only because I really wanted to keep playing. There are incentives to go back and replay missions by selecting contracts to complete. Three different contracts for each mission has set goals for you to accomplish. Covert contracts usually have you trying to make it through the mission without getting spotted or racking up a certain amount of stealth kills. Demolition contracts are all about seeing just how much explosions you can cause to the enemies or the environment. Precision contracts are for the speed run folks. Besides doing certain tasks like rescuing hostages, you have to make it to the end of the mission in a set time limit. I wish that the PS Vita had video out for the flood of speed runs for precision contracts we would have on YouTube.

Making an FPS on a handheld device is a task that seems near impossible for any developer to try and create. Guerrilla Cambridge seems to have outdone themselves with just how well Killzone: Mercenary controls as well as how it looks. If you would have told me this was a PS3 game being played on the PS Vita through remote play, I would be inclined to believe you. Killzone: Mercenary is one of the most gorgeous looking games I have seen on a PS Vita, ever. Since it’s using a version of the Killzone 3 engine, it shouldn’t be a surprise that everything from the shadows, the lighting and little details throughout the game are nothing short of stunning.

l

Despite the awkwardness of playing an FPS on a handheld, Killzone: Mercenary very much feels like a console title. The smaller screen does limit the field of view, thus cutting reaction time down, but I was still able to aim and shoot without any trouble. Running did pose a little problem since there is no clicking of the analog sticks in on the the PS Vita. Having the run ability tied to a button or the rear touch screen was odd at first, though with a little time it became easier to adjust.

I was delighted to find that the touch controls were very unobtrusive and used in a minimalistic fashion in Killzone: Mercenary. Hacking terminals and doors required a matching game on your forearm-mounted computer by tapping the correct symbols on the lock. Having 3 seconds left after going through three levels of hacking on a terminal before an alarm sounds was more fun than I thought it could be. Planting and arming bombs was also a simplistic affair. Following the arrow prompts on-screen, two quick rotations is all you need , but just make sure you’re far enough away before detonating (I learned the hard way just how big the blast radius is).

killzone mercenary

If you want to earn more Vektan as well as experience (since they are one in the same), you might want to sneak your way around. It felt odd trying to play stealthily when FPS’s are known for their run-and-gun approach. To help in sneaking around, there are weapons, armor and VAN-Guards to supplement you. My main loadout for most of the campaign was a silenced sub-machine gun, a dart gun that incapacitated an enemy long enough to get a silent melee kill, and armor that silenced my movements. Switching between different loadouts is easily done by using boxes marked on the mini-map by the arms dealer, Blackjack. So if stealth isn’t your thing, Killzone: Mercenary gives you the option to tackle the missions with whatever play style you are comfortable with.

devkit-20130711-0333_1377024471

VAN-Guards are equivalent to score streak rewards in Black Ops II.  An even mix of defensive and offensive VAN-Guards gives you enough choices to pick what is best for you, from a flying drone that shoots down precision orbital strikes to a personal energy shield, there is no shortage of tactics that you can deploy. I ended up going with the stealth VAN-Guard since taking out the guards one by one until the place was cleared ended up being very challenging. I felt rewarded not only in bonus Vektans but in satisfaction of my skill.

Combat was joyous, until you figure out that when the enemies are on alert and hunting you down, hiding in a corner breaks the game. The A.I. will toss an endless supply of grenades to flush you out if there are openings for the deadly explosives to enter. It’s a good thing that there are conveniently placed sealed rooms with just a door to funnel the enemies through. Once the arena was cleared of enemies, you could just waltz your way to the next checkpoint.

killzone-mercs_bmUploads_2013-01-28_980_Guerrilla_Killzone-Mercenary_10

Once you’re finished with the single player campaign, carry over anything you have unlocked or purchased to the multiplayer arena of Killzone: Mercenary. Free-for-all, team deathmatch and team objective-based Warzone may seem like a pittance of modes until you remember that these modes are just about what every FPS has these days. As much fun as I had running around and collecting Valor cards that other players drop when killed, I had even more fun using the Mantys Engine to fly around a use its spiked pincher to wreck havoc. At first thought VAN-Guards might seem to be very unbalanced, but when you are down in last place and get that 5-kill streak going and finish in the top 3, you’ll be very thankful to have them. Spawning in the claustrophobic maps is troublesome since you will mostly end up very close to the person who just killed you. It keeps the game moving and gives everyone a fighting chance though I can see some hating to die consistently to bad spawns.

Killzone: Mercenary has beautiful art direction, near perfect controls, plenty of choices in the single player campaign with an engaging, fun-filled multiplayer. With a more fulfilling story and smarter A.I., Guerrilla Cambridge would have solved the perplexing puzzle that so many others are striving to figure out; FPS games on the PS Vita.

Killzone: Mercenary is certainly worth picking up (come on, what else are Vita owners playing these days?), and scores a cool 4/5.

Briefly: Well this was unexpected.

Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs is currently one of the most anticipated titles of 2013, and is certainly one of the most promising next-generation launch games (I know I’ll be picking up a copy with my PS4). Today at Gamescom, Ubisoft announced that it’s collaborating with Sony Pictures and Regency Entertainment on a film adaptation of the highly anticipated game.

It seems like both Ubisoft and Sony are confident that Watch Dogs is going to be huge… like Assassin’s Creed huge.

Jean-Julien Baronnet, chief executive officer of Ubisoft Motion Pictures says that “Sony Pictures and New Regency are ideal partners for us. Their deep production expertise and willingness to allow us to maintain a strong creative voice in the film means that we’re on track to deliver a movie that can build upon the excitement that Watch Dogs already is generating as a game.”

No further information about the film was revealed. I’m beyond excited to pick up the game, so you can be sure that we’ll update you on the adaptation as we learn more.

Does it seem crazy to anyone else that they’ve already announced a film adaptation, months before the franchise’s first game?

Briefly: It’s not the big news that Sony announced at today’s Gamescom conference, but it’s definitely still worth noting.

Sony has officially dropped the price of its struggling flagship handheld, the Playstation Vita. Effective immediately, the console’s new price will be a cool $200 / €200.

Sony also revealed that a price drop on Vita memory cards is forthcoming.

Is the drop enough to make you consider the console? What do you think is in store for its future? I still believe that the system lacks a ‘must have’ title, and am afraid of what may happen once the PS4 launches. Will the Vita simply become a PS4 streaming device?

Vita owner? When’s the last time that you picked your console up? Can you recommend me some games?

playstation_vita_lbp

Briefly: Finally.

Sony announced earlier this week that the Playstation 4 launch date would be revealed today at Gamescom. Their conference has come and gone, and we now know just when you’ll be able to pick up a PS4 of your very own… and it’s about damned time.

The PS4 will hit North America (US and Canada) on November 15th. As previously revealed, the console will cost a cool $399. European gamers will have to wait an extra two weeks, and can pick up a unit on November 29th (for €399 / £349).

Sony also revealed a price drop for the suffering PS Vita (down to $199, and it’s still not worth buying), and a release date for Gran Turismo 6 (December 6th)!

Take a look at all of the PS4’s launch countries below, and let us know if you’ll be picking up a console! I’m looking forward to getting in line for this one!

Briefly: The Playstation 4 is still without an official release date, but that is set to change very soon.

Instead of simply sharing the date with all of us eager fans, the company has announced that they will reveal their PS4 launch plans this Tuesday, August 20th.

Sony states “We’ll kick off the show at 18:00 BST on 20 August 2013 with a briefing to media on our release plans for PlayStation 4, as well as updates on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita”. You’ll be able to watch the reveal live here, which hopefully goes off without a hitch (unlike their 30-minute late, very inconsistent E3 conference).

We’ll be sure to share the news as soon as it’s announced! Are you planning to pick up the console?

Briefly: The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘s Harry Osborn, Dane DeHann, took to twitter today to debut a new image from next year’s highly anticipated film.

The image shows Harry and Peter in the Oscorp building. Harry rests comfortably in what is likely his father’s chair, while Peter stands beside an expensive-looking desk. Both characters are looking at something off-camera, perhaps watching a screen, or even speaking to another figure. It’s not the most exciting photo, but it’s certainly cool to see Harry in action.

Take a look at the new image below, and let us know what you think! What are you hoping to see in the The Amazing Spider-Man 2?

Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 follow-up, Elysium, is now less than two weeks away from theatres, and TriStar today released an extended trailer for the film.

It’s really amazing what Blomkamp managed to do with the relatively-low budget (30-million) of District 9, so tripling that with Elysium should lead to an extremely atmospheric and breathtaking world. The cast is also absolutely all-star, and includes Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, William Fichtner, Sharlto Copley, and plenty of others.

Watch the new trailer below, and let us know what you think! Elysium hits theatres on August 9th!

In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

Briefly: If you thought that Naughty Dog’s incredible The Last of Us was the PS3’s last great exclusive, you’re probably mistaken.

Quantic Dream, developer of Indigo Prophecy (Fahrenheit for those not in North America) and Heavy Rain, have another game up their sleeve for this generation. That game stars both Ellen Page and Willem DaFoe, and is called Beyond: Two Souls.

There have been some fantastic gameplay videos and trailers for the game thus far, but a newly released behind-the-scenes featurette really showcases some of the unbelievably varied gameplay that Beyond will offer. You follow Ellen Page’s character through 14 years of her life, and it looks like she has a lot going on. The game looks to mix a thriller with some spiritual and psychological elements, and should be an absolute treat for PS3 owners.

Don’t own a PS3? It’s never been a better time to buy. Check out the latest featurette for Beyond: Two Souls below, and let us know if you’ll be picking it up on October 8th!

Yesterday’s Comic-Con centric Entertainment Weekly cover gave us our first official look at Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Today, a new batch of photos gives us a second look, a much better peek at spidey’s new suit, and more!

Take a look at all of the new images below, and let us know what you think so far! Are you a fan of Foxx’s Electro, or does he simply look like a new-age Mr. Freeze? Sound out below!

Following the teaser trailer released all the way back in February, Sony has just debuted the theatrical trailer for their upcoming animated feature, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2.

The sequel to the hilarious 2009 feature is looking very good, and follows the gang from the first movie on their return to Swallow Falls. It looks almost like a Jurassic Park situation, with Flint and friends returning home to discover their island overrun by the food creatures created in the first film. They arrive with the intention of shutting down the FLRDSMDFR and clearing out all of the now-alive (and occasionally evil) food, but who knows what will happen when they see what’s in store for them!

I found myself laughing out loud throughout the trailer: I was a big fan of the first film in 2009, and I can’t wait to see what comes next! Watch the new trailer below, and let us know what you think! Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 hits theatres on September 27th!

In the wake of the disastrous food storm at the end of the first movie, Flint Lockwood and friends are forced to leave their town of Swallow Falls.  But when it is discovered that sentient food beasts have overrun the island, they are asked to return to save the world…again.

Over at the official PlayStation Blog, Community Manager Paul Sullivan states that PSN will undergo maintenance this Tuesday, June 25th.

From 9:30AM PT (10:30AM MT / 11:30AM CT / 12:30 PM ET) until 4:00PM PT (5:00PM MT / 6:00PM CT / 7:00PM ET), PSN will be inaccessible. Good news is if you sign into PSN from now until before the maintenance starts, you’ll still be able to access online gaming as well as apps like Netflix.

It’s not explained in the blog post if you have to remain signed in to PSN in order to access online play and apps so to be on the safe side, I would suggest signing in a little before start time and stay signed in if you want to do anything during the maintenance period.

Since the PS3 4.45 firmware fiasco last week, this could also be Sony prepping for the fix being released on June 27th.
