Briefly: If you’re lucky enough to be headed to a 7PM IMAX showing of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 on May 1st, you have an awesome poster to pick up while you’re there.

Sony has entrusted Mondo with the one-sheet, and as you’d expect, it’s totally phenomenal.

Take a look at the image below, and let us know if you’l be headed to one of the first IMAX screenings!

Last week, Geekscape was lucky enough to sit down with President and CEO of Sony, Kazuo Hirai, to discuss the success of the Playstation 4 and the brand going forward. What shocked us the most however, was his willingness to reveal details on its successor, the Playstation 5, which is already in development! Below are the highlights of our sit down.

Geekscape: Thank you for having us, it’s a real honor!

Kaz Hirai: My pleasure.

Geekscape: Okay, lets cut to the chase. The Playstation 4 has been a massive success, breaking records left and right and being nearly impossible to find in stores. What do you think was the biggest difference between this time and the PS3’s launch, which struggled so hard out of the gate.

Kaz Hirai: You’re absolutely right. That initial E3 was a humbling experience for us at Sony. There were a lot of things we wish we could take back.

Geekscape: I’m assuming you mean the price point?

Kaz Hirai: Oh no, not at all. Do you remember that quote, and I’m paraphrasing here, that “we could release no games for the PS3 and it would still sell,”?

Geekscape: (Laughs) Oh yeah, that was pretty bad.

Kaz Hirai: No, that wasn’t the bad part. What was bad was that we didn’t stick to our word and released a passable game like Resistance: Fall Of Man. Gamers nowadays don’t want games, they want to be able to share their vague screenshots on Facebook and edit videos, so with the PS4, we strived to launch the system with as little as possible, and our strategy seems to have worked.

Geekscape: But what about Knack and Killzone Shadow Fall?

Kaz Hirai: (Laughs)

Geekscape:

Kaz Hirai: But seriously, we strived to make Knack and Killzone as uninteresting as possible, and I feel we succeeded, but I think we can take it much farther going forward with the Playstation 5.

Geekscape: Wait, you guys are already working on the PS5?

Kaz Hirai: Oh yes, it’s been in R&D for close to a year now. And launching the PS4 has taught us that it doesn’t need games. Let the third parties handle that.

Geekscape: That’s… Disappointing to hear as a fan of many of Sony’s IPs.

Kaz Hirai: You want to talk disappointing? How about giving fans a new Sly Cooper after they begged for it for years and having no one buy it? Or finally making a great Resistance game that goes completely ignored. And don’t get me started on that Twisted Metal mess.

Geekscape:

Kaz Hirai: Look, the only games that sell from us are from Naughty Dog. Why waste the money? Have you seen our financials lately? We’re hemorrhaging cash here. I run a business, not a charity. And as long as our fans find it worthwhile to buy new consoles to play games from the previous generation, than who are we to get in their way with 1st party drivel not named Uncharted? We’re actually very pleased that people bought PS4’s to play Call Of Duty and Assassins Creed.

Geekscape: But I think…

Kaz Hirai: Let me ask you, did you buy Sly Cooper?

Geekscape: … No.

Kaz Hirai: Exaclty. If it makes you feel better, we’re considering HD porting everything, including our HD ports. I’m sure you can’t wait to pre order the Jak and Daxter HD’er Collection. Only on PS4!

Geekscape: That’s not exactly what I had in mind, but its better than nothing. Was there anything you thought could have gone better with the PS4 launch?

Kaz Hirai: No.

Geekscape: Nothing?

Kaz Hirai: Nothing. Well… It could have had more Ridge Racer. I can never get enough of that. But in retrospect, we probably released too many exclusives. As you can see, we’re looking to rectify that.

Geekscape: Hmm… So from the looks of things, it seems like you’re taking a similar approach to the PS Vita.

Kaz Hirai: What’s a Vita?

Geekscape: Erm… Nevermind. Anyway Kaz, thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us!

Kaz Hirai: Anytime, oh, and by the way, The Last Guardian is coming soon, I promise. (Laughs)

So what did you all think of what Kaz had to say? Are you already lining up for your PS5? And how do you get HD’er than HD? Let us know!

Briefly: Aside from Electro, Sony hasn’t really released a good, close-up shot of any of The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘s other villains.

Today, the studio released a great shot of the usually silly-looking Green Goblin, and he actually looks kind of sinister.

Take a look at the still below, and let us know if this changes your opinion on the character’s look! The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theatres on May 2nd!

Briefly: We’re now just a few weeks away from the highly anticipated release of Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and a new featurette for the film has just debuted online.

In the video, The Walking Dead VFX Supervisor Greg Nicotero and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 VFX Supervisor Jerome Chan chat about… well, what else? VFX of course!

With The Walking Dead‘s fourth season coming to a close next Sunday, and The Amazing Spider Man 2 launching just a few week’s later (not to mention Captain America: The Winter Soldier next week), it’s clearly a fantastic time to be a geek. Take a look at the short featurette below, and let us know what you think!

Briefly: I’ve had pretty mixed feelings for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 marketing thus far; we’ll get a great trailer, followed by a poor one, followed by a great clip, and then a stupid on, and so on. I’m happy to say that the film’s just-released final trailer falls in the positive category.

It features a ton of new footage, and it also gives us our first non-still look at the still stupid-looking Green Goblin, as well as the actually-pretty-cool-in-motion Rhino.

In any case, take a look at the new trailer below, and remember that the best promises are the ones you can’t keep. The Amazing Spider-Man hits theatres on May 2nd.

It’s been rumored, officially teased and now finally unveiled at Sony’s GDC press conference, their foray into the VR Headset field with Project Morpheus. Not to be confused the NASA Project Morpheus, Sony’s Project Morpheus has it’s sights set on the home user.

Speaking of sight, Sony outlined their definitions of what makes a good VR setup. Sight being the driving factor, Project Morpheus relies HEAVILY on the power of the PS4, and promises to give the user total spacial awareness. Second is sound, and Sony has been no slouch when it comes to high quality portable sound. They are focusing a lot of energy into spacial and directional sound. Lastly they want ease of use to perform a vital role in the home VR experience. Project Morpheus mimics the Dual Shock controller and the Move in terms of communication ease.

They listed a group of partners that are already onboard with Project Morpheus, those include:

  • Havok Engine
  • Epic Games
  • Crytek
  • Bitsquad
  • CriWare
  • Autodesk
  • Silicon Studio
  • Unity Engine
  • Fmod
  • Wwise
  • DDD
  • Gigantic

The stats of the device themselves are not to shabby. They include a 1080P screen for each eye, 90 degrees field of view, both an accelerometer and gyroscope and can interface via a USB and HDMI cable.

No release date has been announced.

I personally don’t find VR to be TOO appealing, but Sony really has come out guns blazing. Coupled with the new Move controller and the very power PS4, I don’t think Project Morpheus is going to be a shabby product.

Be sure to check out more GDC coverage right HERE at Geekscape!

Briefly: We should be seeing that final trailer any day now, but in the meantime, Sony has debuted eight new stills from The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

The (fairly low-res) stills give us a good look at the face of our new Green Goblin among other things. I still really dislike the way that the villain looks (redditor lixik had a pretty great description, stating that he “looks like Frankie Muniz trying to play gollum.”)

In any case, you can take a look at the new stills below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the feature. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theatres on May 1st.

The studio has started teasing the film’s final trailer with new promo photos featuring the movie’s villains. Yesterday, the following image of Rhino debuted online:

Today, it’s a photo of the Green Goblin:

Briefly: You read that title right, Sony’s Playstation 4 console is not getting a price drop, but a price hike up in the great white North.

Sony confirmed the new price to the Toronto Sun earlier today, which notes the reason for the price change as “to respond to changes in the market environment,” though the Canada to US dollar value was not mentioned.

Dualshock 4 controllers and the Playstation Camera will also see a $5 increase. All pricing goes into effect tomorrow, so Canadians, if there’s a PS4 somewhere that you were thinking about picking up (unlikely as they’re essentially sold out everywhere all the time), I’d jump on the unit before tomorrow comes.

Will this hurt the PS4’s presence in Canada? Have you been able to find a console yet? Sound out below! Is this the first official price hike in console history?

Briefly: Following the live action ad released earlier this week, Sony has debuted a new eight minute preview of Infamous: Second Son, which hits stores on March 23rd. Sucker Punch is clearly using everything that they’ve learned from the franchise’s first two iterations, and is really turning the dial up to 11 with all of their new ideas and gameplay mechanics.

Seriously, those reflections, those particles, that action… Second Son is going to freaking rock, and I cannot wait to get my hands on it.

You can take a look at the new video below (you’ll want to watch the entire thing, trust me) and let us know if you’ll be picking the game up! With Titanfall (which is unreal, read our review here), MGS: Ground Zeroes, and Infamous: Second Son all releasing in March, it’s going to be a busy month!

Briefly: I actually really enjoyed yesterday’s clip from The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Today’s? Not so much.

Spidey’s banter as he attempts to grab each vial from the truck comes off as really silly, and not in a good way. Take a look at the clip below, and let us know if you agree.

Are you looking forward to the full feature?

Briefly: Sony has debuted a new clip from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (between all of the trailers and clips, we must have almost seen the entire movie by now), this time showing Spidey trying to reason with Electro in Times Square.

The scene certainly looks intense (aside from Jamie Foxx’s electric blue, which I’m still having a hard time getting used to), and is one of the better clips that we’ve seen from the film so far. Take a look at the video below, and let us know what you think!

Home is where the heart is, be it PlayStation Home or your real one. PlayStation Home is now also the residence of shiny new trophies as Sony announced that trophy support has been added to the virtual wonderland. Spotted in a tweet by the PlayStation Europe community manager Chris Owen, version 1.86 will bring trophy support to everyone once the new version is up for everyone to install. If you are one of the many that spend a lot of time actually doing things in PlayStation Home, you will be happy to know that trophies will be gained retroactively if you have already met the requirements for said trophies. The list of trophies for the new PlayStation Home update are as follows:

Gold

  • There’s No Place Like Home – Visit PlayStation Home on 50 different days.

Silver

  • Wherever I Lay My Hat – Own 3 purchased or rewarded apartments or clubhouses
  • Brand New Toy – Own 3 purchased or rewarded portable items
  • Nice Gadget! – Own 15 purchased or rewarded furniture or active items

Bronze

  • Welcome Home – Log in to PlayStation Home
  • A Place to Call My Own – Visit your Harbor Studio apartment
  • Interior Designer – Use 15 unique, purchased or rewarded furniture items in an apartment
  • Fresh Threads – Own 15 purchased or rewarded clothing items
  • A New You – Change each item of clothing individually on a male or female avatar
  • A Documentary – Take a photo on 10 different days
  • Welcome Guest – Visit a friend’s apartment
  • Grand Explorer – Visit 20 unique spaces
  • Born to Dance – Perform 5 of the default dances

As you can see from the list above, there is no Platinum trophies. Not that big of a deal since only the major trophy chasers care to get them. Even though PlayStation Home has no plans to come to the PS4, Sony is still committed to pushing out new content on a weekly basis on the PS3 to the unforeseeable future. Looks like a lot of trophy junkies are set to rush to their PS3’s and download PlayStation Home starting today. Let’s hope that the network can take the beating.

The featurette digs into Gwen and Peter’s tough relationship, and breaks down the Gwen-needs-to-leave-but-doesn’t-want-to-leave subplot of the film, as well as the fact that Peter feels bad for breaking his promise to the late Captain Stacey.

Briefly: It was barely two weeks ago that Sony revealed that over 5 million PS4 units had been sold, and today the company marked another milestone: 6 million freaking units.

The console launched in Japan on February 22nd, so I’m sure the surge of units had something to do with that. In any case, it’s an insanely impressive number.

Take a look at what the company had to say below, and let us know if you’ve picked up a unit!

As you’ve probably read by now, cumulative PS4 sales have now surpassed six million units worldwide following the successful launch in Japan just over a week ago. It’s truly humbling to see the rate at which gamers across the globe are choosing PS4 as their next gen console of choice. Even more exciting is what happens when gamers power up their PS4s. In the United States, more than 90% of PS4s are online, enabling gamers to connect, compete and share their greatness with friends and fellow gamers.

There have now been more than 3.6 million live broadcasts, and more than 56 million spectate sessions on PS4 through Twitch and Ustream. In fact, since January 1st, PS4 gamers account for 20% of daily broadcasters on Twitch. PS4 owners are also embracing the Share button on the DUALSHOCK 4 Wireless Controller, with more than 100 million shares captured as fans show friends their latest achievements on Facebook and Twitter.

And soon, you’ll be able to share your greatness in new ways. Developers are beginning to take advantage of PS4’s new interactive live broadcasting gaming features, integrating modes that allow broadcasted gameplay to become interactive for spectators. Even as a viewer, you can now influence livestreamed gameplay.

For example, Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition features a built-in Broadcast+ mode where you can stream your gameplay while viewers on the PS4 or a web browser influence positive and negative effects during gameplay. More social feedback is on the way too, with Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends Complete Edition in March and Daylight in April.

We love the enthusiasm that all of you have had for the PS4 since launch, and we can’t wait to share more great games, experiences and features with you soon. Greatness awaits!

Briefly: Following up on that Green Goblin image from a few days back, Sony Pictures has just debuted a new, 3-minute long international trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

The video contains a ton of new footage and a lot of new plot revelations, so if you’re trying to head to the theatre surprised, I’d recommend that you avoid the video. It also contains way too much dubstep for any movie trailer, but other than that, it’s a pretty cool watch.

We’ve seen plenty of Jamie Foxx’s Electro, but both Paul Giamatti’s Rhino and Dane Dehaan’s Green Goblin have been all but ignored. Today, the studio debuted a new still from the film, and it features our best look at the new Green Goblin yet!

Briefly: Sony has just revealed that, preceding the PS4’s launch in Japan on February 22nd, the console has over 5.3 million units.

That’s a lot of freaking consoles, and they’re likely to sell a boatload more in Japan next week.

“I am thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play throughout and beyond the holiday season,” said Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. “We are delighted that according to the NPD Group’s latest data, PS4 was January’s top-selling console in the United States. The PS4 system’s momentum just keeps growing stronger, and we are extremely grateful for the continued passion and support of PlayStation fans. February 22 sees the launch of PS4 in Japan, and I’m looking forward to Japanese fans sharing the excitement of the deep social capabilities and entertainment experiences only possible on PS4.”

The company has also released their first advertisement for Playstation Plus, which is required for online gaming on the PS4, and is an absolutely worthwhile service that nets you free games and steep discounts every single month. Briefly: It’s already out in Japan, and will be releasing soon in Europe, but Sony just made the slimmer, lighter Playstation Vita official for North America.

The Vita 2000 will launch exclusively in a Borderlands 2 bundle this Spring. The 2000 is about 20% thinner and 15% lighter than the previous model, and it also has 1Gb of built-in memory (up from 0), and about an hour of extra battery life. The only downside? It uses a standard LCD over the gorgeous OLED from the original model.

The bundle actually sounds fantastic. It (of course) includes Borderlands 2, but it’ll also come with a decently-sized 8Gb memory card. I’m running an 8Gb in my Vita right now, and it’s been enough for about 3 full Vita games, plus some download-only titles like Spelunky, OlliOlli (which I’m still obsessed with, check out my review here), and Lone Survivor.

I haven’t been a fan of the Vita for most of its life (though I did buy one on launch day), but with the myriad of indie games now available on the console, an astonishing Playstation Plus collection, and Remote Play for PS4 (and Playstation Now down the pipeline), it’s really becoming a decent system (though memory cards are still far too expensive).

Will you be picking up a Vita? Check out the announcement video below, and let us know!

Briefly: The Uncharted movie may have found its director.

Seth Gordon, director of the award winning documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, and the more recent comedy Horrible Bosses, has entered negotiations with Sony Pictures Entertainment to helm the adaptation.

The script comes from Safe House writer David Guggenheim, but it’s unknown at this time what piece of the Uncharted tale the film will tell.

Briefly: Whether he meant to or not (he probably meant to), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 director Marc Webb has revealed just who B.J. Novak is playing in the upcoming film:

So, since the film doesn’t already have enough villains, do you think that the Spider-Slayers could be making an appearance as well? Or is Webb just planting the seed for a future film?

Do you like the idea of Novak in the role? Is there someone else you’d rather have seen? Sound out below!

Briefly: Sony teased us with the first half of their Amazing Spider-Man 2 Super Bowl spot last Thursday. Today, the studio both completed the spot, and also released a sweet, sweet three minute and fifty second long “Villains Unite” trailer for the film.

The spot may reveal some important details about the feature (like the apparent fate of Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacey), and the trailer delves into the origins of Jamie Foxx’s Max Dillon. While I didn’t really like the film’s first trailer, I thoroughly enjoyed everything that Sony released today.

With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.

Briefly: I hate teasers for trailers as much as the next guy, but this one is pretty cool.

Sony has released a brief teaser for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer that’s set to air during the Super Bowl this Sunday. The spot features a bunch of footage that we haven’t seen before, including a very quick look at the mechanized Rhino… and it may even hint at the fate of Gwen Stacey. I bet Pete’s going to regret not keeping that promise at the end of this film.

In any case, take a look at the spot below, and let us know what you hope to see this Sunday!

Briefly: Following the announcement of a Ratchet & Clank movie last year, Sony has just revealed their next animated adventure, Sly Cooper.

First developed by Sucker Punch (who later moved on to the critically acclaimed Infamous franchise), Sly Cooper is an excellent stealth-action-platformer series that first debuted on the PS2 in 2002.

Here’s what Sony had to say about the newly announced film, and its first teaser trailer:

When we met with PlayStation to discuss the film last year, we proposed that the CG art style would transfer best in the leap to the big screen. Both PlayStation and Sucker Punch Productions (the original creators of the franchise) were kind enough to give us the chance to make this idea a reality. After a few months of development, the team at Rainmaker, along with Director Kevin Munroe, nailed it. Well, kind of…

The modeler gave Murray the wrong helmet, which was more like a motorcycle helmet — funny, but definitely NOT his signature one. And while we all loved the temp music track — which happened to be the theme to Mission Impossible — that music would have cost us a fortune to license. With those quirks worked out, we’re excited to bring you this first look and hope you enjoy it.

The Sly Cooper release is slated for 2016. The film will also be released in 3D for those who want to feel like they’re in the actual Sly Cooper world.

Now, take a look at the trailer below, let us know what you think, and be sure to share your favourite Sly Cooper moment in the comments below! Sly Cooper is slated to release in 2016.

Based on one of PlayStation’s most beloved franchises, Sly Cooper is a kinetic and comedic heist film that tells the story of Sly Cooper, an orphaned raccoon thief, and the adventures of his childhood friends and partners in crime, Bentley Turtle and Murray Hippo. In the film, Sly learns that he comes from a long line of talented, international thieves, and is catapulted into a global adventure. Sly races to reassemble pieces of an ancient book holding the Cooper clan’s family secrets before it can fall into the hands of Clockwerk — an evil metallic owl bent on ending the Cooper family line.

Briefly: Sony today debuted a brand-new look at the Sucker Punch PS4 exclusive Infamous: Second Son.

As a huge fan of the Infamous series thus far, I have to say that Second Son looks extremely promising. Sucker Punch is clearly using everything that they’ve learned from the franchise’s first two iterations, and is really turning the dial up to 11 with all of their new ideas and gameplay mechanics.

Today’s video explores the game’s new setting, Seattle, and it’s easy to see that Infamous: Second Son is set to be the PS4’s best looking game to date. Take a look at the new preview below, and let us know what you think!

Infamous: Second Son hits stores on March 21st!

Briefly: Following the newest international posters from last week, Sony has just debuted seven new stills from The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

The images give us (as always) a better look at Electro, Harry talking to a (masked) Spider-Man, Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacey in distress, and a few other surprises. Take a look at everything below, and let us know what you think! The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theatres on May 2nd!

Briefly: During Sony’s now-concluded CES presentation, Sony Computer Entertainment President Andrew House took to the stage to reveal some welcomed Playstation news.

First up, Sony has sold a lot of PS4 units.

House then went on to reveal Playstation Now, the official name of their long-awaited Gaikai based streaming service. PS Now is set to deliver a variety of popular PlayStation 3 game titles, first on PlayStation 4 and PS3 systems, followed by the PlayStation Vita.

Pricing for PS Now has not yet been revealed, but users will have the ability to rent specific titles, or pay for a subscription that gives them access to a wide variety of titles.

Take a look at the full press release below, and we’ll be sure to share more Playstation Now news as soon as it’s available.

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced that “PlayStation™Now” (PS Now), the company’s streaming game service that leverages cloud-based technology, will become officially available in the United States this summer. PS Now will deliver a variety of popular PlayStation®3 (PS3™) game titles*1 first on PlayStation®4 (PS4™) and PS3 systems, followed by the PlayStation®Vita (PS Vita) system.

In addition to PlayStation platforms, most 2014 U.S. models of Sony’s BRAVIA® TV*2 lineup will support PS Now. Eventually the service will expand beyond PlayStation platforms and Sony devices, allowing users to stream PlayStation games on numerous other Internet-connected devices.

SCE’s vision for PS Now is to enable users to instantly enjoy a wide range of full games on the Internet-connected consumer electronics devices they use every day. The accessibility of PS Now means, for example, that PS4 users in the living room can continue playing a game on a PS3 system in their bedroom. Or PS Vita users can enjoy instant access to a game wherever there’s Wi-Fi connectivity, such as outdoors, then can switch to a supporting BRAVIA® TV’s big screen and play the same game after arriving home.

PS Now will offer choice to gamers with how they want to access content. Gamers can rent by title for specific games they are interested in, or they can choose a subscription that delivers additional value with the ability to explore and play many games available across a wide variety of genres. In addition, the service will support many popular PSNSM features such as online multi-player, Trophies, and messages.

“We are thrilled to deliver entertainment experiences only possible from PlayStation through our new streaming game service,” said Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. “PS Now will allow users to engage in the world of PlayStation, whether they’re existing fans or have never owned a PlayStation platform.”

During the 2014 International CES held in Las Vegas from January 7, attendees can visit the Sony booth to have a hands-on experience with the PS Now service for the first time ever. Attendees can enjoy four blockbuster PS3 titles, BEYOND: Two Souls, God of War: Ascension, The Last of Us and Puppeteer from SCE Worldwide Studios, on PS Vita or BRAVIA® TV.

Prior to the official launch, SCE will begin a beta program on PS3 systems in certain regions of the United States from the end of January. Additional information about PS Now will be available at http://us.playstation.com/playstationnow.

SCE will continue to create and expand a new world of entertainment only available on PlayStation through the introduction of innovative technologies and services that deliver amazing experiences.

*1 Details of supported titles will be announced when ready.
*2 Among the 9 U.S. models launching in 2014, 1 model (KDL-R400B) will not support this service.

Briefly: With all of the recent The Amazing Spider-Man 2 marketing (did you catch the Times Square trailer from earlier this week?), it’s been made very apparent that Electro is the main villain in the film. I’d question whether or not Rhino would even make an appearance had we not seen a quick clip of him in the film’s first trailer.

Sony has just debuted three new international posters for the film, and keeping with the trend, Rhino is nowhere to be seen. As usual, Jamie Foxx’s Electro falls front and centre in each image.

Take a look at the posters below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the film (and where the hell you think that Rhino could be). The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theatres on May 2nd!
