Briefly: With just a few more days until launch, I’ve actually managed to stay pretty spoiler-free on the Pokémon Sun and Moon front at this point. I have no idea what Z-Moves are, and aside from seeing a few new forms of classic PokémonI’ve managed to avoid all of the trailers released for the game thus far.

That said, with launch fast approaching… I got antsy and excited and watched the latest trailer. I still don’t have a great idea of what’s going on, but the video does reveal some new Z-Moves for the new starter Pokémon, and even more Ultra Beasts.

And with that, I’m out until the 18th! Don’t spoil things for me! Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think!

WARNING: Light spoilers for the beginning of the game. Turn away now if you want to go in blind.

With 2016 winding down, it looks like the 3DS s looking to send off the year with a bang in the form of Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon, the next set of mainline games that are scheduled to release on November 18th. Across nearly a year of trailers, teases and rampant speculation, we finally got a chance to try the beginning of the full game, all while having some of our most burning questions answered. From what we’ve played, the games are shaping up to be some of the most ambitious titles yet, doing away with many series staples in order to give them their own identity, all while opening up more than a few new questions in the process. With that game time under our belts, here’s what we’ve learned, (and what we didn’t), during its first 30 minutes.

These game will be much more story focused.

A persistent complaint across nearly every Pokemon game was its basic level of storytelling. Somewhat forgiven in the early days since the audience didn’t expect much from a Game Boy or Game Boy Color game, future entries seemed to actually regress in their depth of storytelling, to the point where fighting the newest team or collecting a new set of badges felt more like a chore in between better Pokemon than a fulfilling part of the game. Black and White broke away from this trend, but fell right back into it with its sequels, and to a lesser extent, Pokemon X and Y. From the early portions of Sun, it wastes no time upping the stakes, involving Pokemon and people alike in a much more dangerous situation than previously encountered. As your character protects a mysterious creature, (which we’ll talk about more below), from being assaulted by a flock of Spearow, the bridge they’re on collapses, resulting in what would have been a REALLY short game if it wasn’t for Tapu Koko, the island’s guardian, swooping down and rescuing you at the last second.

This is all before you pick your Starter.

What’s Lillie’s relationship with the Ultra Beasts? And what’s in her bag?

From the moment the Ultra Beasts were revealed, fans quickly linked the first one’s appearance to Lillie, Professor Kukui’s assistant. In case that theory needed any more fuel to add to the fire, the whole bridge incident I mentioned above began when the creature in Lillie’s bag broke out for some fresh air, only to be assaulted by a flock of Spearows. If you’re wondering what’s so weird about a person accompanying a creature in a world full of weird beasts, it’s because Nebby as it was called, was not a Pokemon. It was not in a ball like almost every Pokemon carried by the main cast throughout the main line games, it didn’t fight back when attacked, and it seemed completely helpless. Since it’s being made very clear that Ultra Beasts are separate from traditional Pokemon, what else could Nebby be? My guess is that Lillie’s relationship to Nebby, the Ultra Beasts, and the Aether Foundation’s need to study them will all be major plot points throughout the game’s story.

HMs are dead, but what about the moves themselves?

As reported previously, Pokemon is FINALLY doing away with the dreaded HM, moves that were needed to progress outside of battle while taking up a valuable move slot with an attack that was usually useless in combat. Rather than carrying around one or two useless Pokemon to have these moves in your inventory, your character will now be able to call on Ride Pokemon for these tasks. Using a pager straight out of 1996, players will call on helpers such as Tauros, Charizard and Sharpedo to navigate the field.

Yes, this is a step in the right direction for sure, but among the awful moves were accurate, yet powerful moves like Surf, or the physical Waterfall that remained popular in regular battles. Will those moves be making a return in the form of standard TMs? Unfortunately, this might not be the case. While it was confirmed that those moves will still be attached to any Pokemon you transfer over from Pokemon Bank that knows them, (meaning you should be able to breed them onto new Pokemon), it could not be confirmed if we’ll just be able to teach them the moves if we want to.

Alola has no gyms, but might gyms make an appearance anyway?

Recent news has also revealed that as speculated, the Island Trials, where trainers have to complete unique tasks before fighting powerful Totem Pokemon and the Island Kahuna, will replace the traditional eight gyms that measured your progress. Considering there are only four islands, it makes us wonder what else will change in between, since the game obviously won’t just end when you complete four challenges. With the inclusion of two potential rival teams in Team Skull and The Aether Foundation, the Zygarde side quests and the Ultra Beasts, signs are pointing to the surrounding narrative being even more important than fighting to be the very best this time around.

But then again, that’s not to say that gyms aren’t involved at all. At the start of the game, Professor Kukui makes a comment about just returning from visiting Kanto, only to get beaten pretty badly by the Gym Leaders of old. Sure, this has been hinted at in previous games, resulting in a whole lot of nothing each time, but considering how much of an overhaul the game has received since the last time we visited the region, the fact that your character is originally from Kanto, and the huge focus on the original 151 Pokemon with all the new Alola Forms, it wouldn’t be too crazy to imagine taking a trip to Pallet Town once again.

Original Forms of Alola Pokemon can be found… Kind of. And what happens when they breed!?

The first thing I noticed when the game fired up was an Alolan Meowth in your room. Yet, in the living room, a standard Meowth is hanging out with your mother. Naturally, this led me to ask whether or not the original forms could be found throughout Sun and Moon.

It was confirmed that they CANNOT, and the only reason why a regular Meowth was in your house was because it was brought over from Kanto during the family move. Following the trail further, I asked what would happen if you breed a Kanto version in Alola. Would the egg hatch as an Alolan form? Unfortunately, we have no idea! This question remains one of the mysteries heading into the full release, and likely won’t be discovered until we get the chance to test it ourselves. For now, I would suggest breeding your best classic Pokemon in the old games before transferring them over until we receive final confirmation.

Pokemon truly are your partners this time.

In every other previous game, your starter Pokemon was gifted to you by the game’s professor. Considering new mechanics like Z-Moves and Greninja’s Battle Bond ability are directly tied to the bonds the Pokemon holds with the trainer, it’s no surprise that this connection seems to play a much bigger role in Sun and Moon. With this bond often said but not seen, Alola shows it when you receive your first Pokemon in a much different manner than in previous games.

Rather than being locked in their Poke Balls, Rowlett, Litten and Popplio are each lined up in front of you, waiting for you to make your decision. Yet, you’re not the only one with a say in the matter, because once the Pokemon is chosen, it then has to choose you in return. Standing across from each other like the thrilling, climactic final scene from Air Bud, the Pokemon has to decide whether or not they feel a strong enough bond with you to accept your choice. This type of freedom for the Pokemon themselves would make Team Plasma proud! Oh, and speaking of…

Sun and Moon will likely surpass Black and White as the most polarizing games in the series.

Once I had time to absorb everything that I had played and what we’ve learned so far about the games, one thing seemed abundantly clear to me. Sun and Moon have the real potential to be the most polarizing entries in the series to date. The last time a generation approached the games in such a drastically different way, we ended up with Black and White, which scrapped all previous Pokemon for an original set 0f 150 until after the game was completed, had the biggest focus on story compared to its predecessors, made Gym Leaders mean more than bosses, and bad guys that weren’t one dimensional. As a response to the huge shake up in the roster however, (among other more technical complaints), people seem to either love or hate the fifth generation with very little middle ground.

For every change that will be universally adored, (like the full range of 3D motion and how much more fluid the game looks and plays because of it, some of Sun and Moon‘s bold changes are so drastic, that they’re almost sure to divide the fanbase to an extent. Z-Moves, Alolan Forms rather than new Pokemon, Bottle Caps that instantly raise the IV stats of a Pokemon, making what took hours of work now take what can be a matter of minutes, displaying the weaknesses and resistances on the battle screen to make an easy game much easier, and the removal of series staples like gyms are just some of the ways these games are taking huge risks. From what we’ve played so far though, it seems like they’re paying off.

It is another big news day for Pokémon Sun and Moon! A trailer debuted this morning and there are tons of new Pokémon to get acquainted with. But first, let’s take a look at that trailer:

Holy pokéballs, how exciting! Not only do we have eight new Pokémon but we also got a glimpse at two more key characters: Olivia and Ilima.Pokemon Sun and Moon- Kahuna Olivia

Olivia is the Kahuna of Akala Island. She favors Rock-types.

Pokemon Sun and Moon Captain Ilima

As you can see from the screenshot, Trial Captain Ilima specializes in Normal-type Pokémon.

silvally

Perhaps the most exciting of the Pokémon shown in the trailer was Silvally, the evolution of Type: Null. Its ability, “RKS System,” allows Silvally to change its type based on its held item (it is initially a Normal-type). Likewise, the elemental-type of Silvally’s exclusive move, “Multi-Attack,” is also dependent on its held item. There seems to be a backstory behind this Pokémon, with the official website stating that it was “created to oppose a threat.”

hakamo-o kommo-o

The second and third evolutions of Jangmo-o are Hakamo-o and Kommo-o, respectively. These Dragon/Fighting-types either have the ability “Bulletproof” or “Soundproof.” Kommo-o has an exclusive move called “Clanging Scales,” which lowers the users defense after the attack.

steenee tsareena

Next up are the second and third evolutions of the Grass-type Bounsweet: Steenee and Tsareena. Steenee is cute but doesn’t stand out that much. Tsareena on the other hand, not only has a unique ability but also a move only it can learn. One of Tsareena’s potential abilities is “Queenly Majesty,” which prevents its opponents from making use of priority moves. Its special move, “Trop Kick,” lowers the victim’s attack as well as dealing damage.

ribombee

Ribombee is the evolution of Cutiefly and is a Bug/Fairy-type. It can have either ability “Honey Gather” or “Shield Dust.”

alolan-grimeralolan-muk

And it isn’t a new Pokémon trailer without another Alola Form. This time we get Alolan Grimer and its evolution, Alolan Muk. I must say, I think this form is an improvement over the original. Alolan Muk and Alolan Grimer are Poison/Dark-types. They can have the ability “Poison Touch” or “Gluttony.”

That about sums up today’s trailer! Which of the new Pokémon is your favorite?

We’re just about a month out from Pokemon Sun & Moon, so anticipation for the game is building fast.

Today, Nintendo just announced that there’ll be a free self contained demo for the game on October 18th. Users will be able to download the demo on the E-shop, catch and discover some of the Alola formed Pokemon, and even capture Ash’s Greninja which can be transferred into the full game! Pretty awesome that we’re getting this demo in the first place to help level out anticipation. That or it’ll just make people more impatient.

Are you excited for the demo? What kind of Alola Pokemon are you hoping to find? Tell us in the comments below!

It may still be a few days from October but that hasn’t stopped the early launch of seasonal merchandise. Disney does it. Trader Joe’s does it. And it turns out, so does Pokémon Center. Their batch of Halloween-flavored goodness is called “The Halloween Circus Collection.” The collection consists of pins, plushes, and keychains themed to a Gothic circus exhibition. Mostly what that translates into are a bunch of adorable Pokémon dressed in even cuter outfits.

Here are some of the highlights:
p2914_701-00100_01 Pikachu Halloween Circus Poké Plush ($17.99)

It isn’t a party without Pikachu and the little guy is decked out in a Chandelure- themed Jester costume. Its hood is removable (nice touch). The plush stands eight and a half inches tall. If that size is a tad too big for you, there is the plush keychain option as well.

p2300_710-01676_01

Gengar, Duskull, Golbat, and Mismagius Costume Pikachu Pin Set ($28.99)

Pikachu shows his spooky side with this four-piece pin set. I am in love with the Duskull pin in particular. You may recognize the Golbat  one from last year’s merchandise.

p2914_701-00105_01

Drifloon Halloween Circus Plush Keychain ($9.99)

This plush keychain is my favorite out of the entire collection. Just look at the little guy’s face, with the glaring eyes and all! Also there is just something about a Drifloon wearing a Zubat hat that I find innately endearing. The keychain isn’t that big (four inches long) but than again, neither is the price tag.

p2914_701-00099_01

Pikachu Pumpkin Card Case ($14.99)

For those of us who use bus passes or any other form of transportation documentation, card cases like this one are quite handy. With a retractable cord attached to its metal clip, your ticket/pass can stay within the security of the case while being tapped. And unlike last year’s Joltik card case, this one also features a small zippered compartment for cash. If you really dig the whole Pikachu-as-a-pumpkin thing, I would also recommend you check out the plush hatplush keychain, and Poké Plush featuring the same design.

What were your favorite items from the collection? Let us know in the comments!

In the recent Pokémon Sun and Moon trailer, fans were treated to four new Pokémon along with a deluge of information on the games’ features. Let’s take a look at that trailer first:

Wow! That is a ton of stuff packed in those three and a half minutes, right? We’ll start with the Pokémon that starred in the video.

passimian

First off is Passimian, a Fighting-type. It has the never-before-seen Ability “Receiver,” which allows this Pokémon to inherit the Ability of a teammate who has fainted on the battlefield. Passimian is exclusive to Pokémon Sun.

oranguru

For those playing Pokémon Moon, you can find Oranguru, an Normal/Pyshic-type. It can have either the Ability “Inner Focus” or “Telepathy.” Oranguru is the only Pokémon who can learn the move “Instruct,” which makes its target to use its most recent move immediately.

lycanroc_midday_formlycanroc_midnight_form

Next we have the evolution of Rockruff, Lycanroc. There is a Midday Form (first image) and a Midnight Form (second image). It was previously thought that which form you received was dependent on what time of day the Pokémon evolved but each one is actually exclusive to a specific version of the game. Midday Form comes from Sun and Midnight Form is for Moon.

Let’s move on to the new features you can expect in the games. First, there is Pokémon Refresh, a leveled-up version of Pokémon-Amié. In this version, players will be able to cure paralysis and poison within mini-games along with the original bonding mechanic from the previous games.

Character customization akin to that found in Pokémon X and Y makes a comeback. Players will be able to change their hairstyle, hair color, and eye color. There is also the ability to change apparel and dye its colors as well.

Pokemon Bank changes

Starting January 2017, both Pokémon Bank and Pokémon Transporter will receive software updates to add compatibility for Sun and Moon as well as Virtual Console versions of RedBlue, and Yellow. It should be noted that once transported from Pokémon Bank to Sun or Moon, they cannot be transferred back to Omega RubyAlpha SapphireX, or Y. There is also the whole yearly fee for Pokémon Bank usage thing.

Pokemon Bank Pokedex

The January 2017 updates will also bring a new feature to Pokémon Bank: The National Pokédex. The application will read your saved data on SunMoonOmega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, X, and and add information on the Pokémon you have caught. Pretty spiffy, right?

It wasn’t so long ago that we viewed the latest trailer for Pokémon Sun and Moon and were introduced to the Ultra Beasts, in particular UB-01. Twitter went nuts over theories as to the creature’s origin. In the interest of keeping things potentially spoiler-free, these hypotheses will not be repeated here. But I will say that UB-01 is in some pretty interesting company.corocoro-ultrabeasts

Thanks to magazine scans from CoroCoro magazine, we have our first look at UB-02 Beauty and UB-02 Expansion. Why they both bear the title “UB-02” remains unknown. The magazine article mentions the UB-01’s name is a mystery but will have a deep meaning within the game.

corocoro-rugaruganday corocoro-rugarugannight

The new Ultra Beasts weren’t the only reveal in this issue of CoroCoro. Remember Rockruff? It’s next evolutionary stage was also unveiled. Like Eevee’s Umbreon and Espeon, Rockruff’s next form will be different depending on what time it evolves. Evolve it during daylight hours and you get Rugarugan – Midday form (Japanese name). If the evolution occurs at night, you’ll end up with Rugarugan – Midnight form (again, Japanese name). No word on if what the types of these two forms are.

What do you think of these reveals?

[source: Serebii.net]

Steam Siege, the latest Pokemon Trading Card Game expansion, marks the TCG debut of Volcanion, the last Mythical Pokemon from the latest generation of games. While it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the Steam Pokemon would be the face of the new set, Volcanion isn’t the only monster to take center stage this time around. With the debut of the first Sun and Moon Pokemon in card form, new Break and EX monsters to supercharge our decks, and a larger emphasis on the dual type mechanic that debuted many sets ago, here’s what to look out for when you’re tearing open those booster packs.

Serving as the star of the set, Volcanion looks to power up its fire type teammates courtesy of its Steam Up ability. By discarding a Fire Energy, all fire type attacks will do an extra 30 damage. That boosts its own Volcanic Heat attack from an already massive 130 HP of damage to 160. Its dual typing gives it the ability to do double damage to most other fire types thanks to its water typing, meaning it can make using a different fire deck against it a nightmare. Its biggest drawback is that it can’t attack during the turn after it attacks, which leaves it wide open to take more damage. Being that it’s an EX Pokemon, getting it KO’d means the opponent gets two prize cards compared to one, bringing them that much closer to victory. As a high risk, high reward monster, play Volcanion EX with caution.

pokemon-tcg-steam-siege-volcanion-ex

Perhaps even more important than Volcanion is Magearna, the first Sun and Moon Pokemon to make its TCG debut. As a pure Steel type, Magearna EX needs a special type of Energy Card to be able to attack. Thankfully, two of the three it needs are colorless, meaning any other energy type will work. Perfect for a steel focused deck, Soul Blaster does 120 damage, with the following turn leading to a 60 HP reduction in power. While its regaining its strength, its Mystic Heart ability prevents all status ailments to any Pokemon on your team with a Steel Energy attached. Made with defense in mind, Magearna finds itself being able to constantly attack, which is a step up from Volcanion.

pokemon-tcg-steam-seage-magearna-ex

The EX cards are great, but the new Break Cards might outshine them, especially when it comes to the new Yveltal Break. Evolving from the standard Yveltal, the Break form deals 120 damage with three Dark Energy cards. If that wasn’t strong enough, this Baleful Night attack does 30 damage to every Pokemon on your opponents bench. Depending on which version of the base card you used for the evolution, it can also gain additional abilities that it doesn’t normally have. This goes for cards like Talonflame Break too, which can deal 150 damage with only two Fire Energy cards. Even if you have to discard the energies attached to it, it’s a great way to pull out a clutch win.

The above monsters are complimented by a host of great cards, including Gardevoir EX, Professor Sycamore, (which lets you draw 7 cards after discarding your hand), Ninja Boy, (a highlight from the recently released Theme Decks, allowing you to replace one basic Pokemon on your field with another in your deck), and Pokemon Ranger, (which removes all attack effects).

pokemon-tcg-steam-siege-pokemon-ranger

If you want more information on the newest theme decks, check out our review here! Do you have any other cards from Steam Siege that you’re particularly fond of? Let us know in the comments, and keep checking back for more Pokemon news and impressions as they become available!

In the latest trailer for the next entries in the storied Pokemon franchise, Pokemon Sun and Moon, multiple new features, Pokemon and characters were introduced, one of which will look very familiar if you’ve been hoping for a sequel to Pokemon Snap for the last decade. Check out the trailer below, then get hyped with us as we break down its many reveals!

Making the most out of its two minute run time, we’ll start with the new Pokemon. Following up on Thrusday’s reveal, Alolan Raticate was shown, with a pair of puffy cheeks to go with the new Dark/Normal typing and the Gluttony/Hustle abilities it shares with its previous form.

But how did it get so fat? Its environment, of course! According to The Pokemon Company,

Raticate in Alola live in urban areas, leading to a higher-calorie diet than that of Raticate elsewhere. This means they have tough bodies but have gotten a lot fatter. They stockpile huge amounts of food in their nests and prefer fresh fruit and high-class ingredients. Alolan Raticate is the Totem Pokémon of the trial that takes place in Verdant Cavern on Melemele Island in Pokémon Moon.

Pokemon Sun Moon 9616 Raticate

Next up is Jangmo-o, a determined Dragon type with the Soundproof and Bulletproof abilities. A determined warrior who is constantly seeking to become stronger, could this be the first in a line of this generation’s main Dragon type?

The Scaly Pokémon Jangmo-o has the pride of a warrior and never neglects its training in its pursuit of becoming stronger. This Pokémon uses the scales on its head as a weapon both offensively and defensively. It lives in harsh locales, like canyons, where it can train.

Pokemon Sun Moon 9616 Jangmo-o

Last on the list of standard Pokemon is, Type: Null. No, that’s not a new typing, but the name of the new synthetic Pokemon that’s made up of different parts. Sporting a fin, an armored head with a helmet that keeps it under control, and other various limbs to make up its body, its easily one of the most openly morbid designs the series has produced. With the Battle Armor ability, which keeps it from receiving critical hits, we’re expecting this one to give us trouble as we progress through the story and face off with Team Skull’s enforcer, Gladion.

Type: Null is a Synthetic Pokémon which was constructed to synthesize the strengths of various Pokémon, making it adaptable enough to complete a mission that requires a Pokémon as strong as the Pokémon of mythology. The mask fitted to this Pokémon’s head is a piece of equipment designed to control its power. Type: Null is the partner Pokémon of a newly revealed character—Gladion, the taciturn enforcer of Team Skull, who places a high value on being strong in battle.

Pokemon Sun Moon 9616 Null

After all this time, it seems like the evil team finally has a unique, menacing Pokemon to fight with. Nothing against a sea of Rattatas and Zubats, but it was hard to take them seriously.

If these are the new Pokemon, what are the Ultra Beasts? That’s what the Aether Foundation hopes to find out. This new organization led by Lusamine, Faba, and Wicke, is researching these otherworldly creatures alongside their employees. Knowing that they could pose a threat to humans and Pokemon alike. what direction will they take the story into once they’re introduced? Could we be getting a more detailed story again like in Black/White? I wouldn’t even be surprised if Aether has some ulterior motives of their own…

But perhaps the most important reveal of all was the Pokemon Finder, a new camera based mini game that might look familiar to those N64 gamers who have been clamoring for a certain photography based sequel. Using your Rotom Pokedex, trainers will be able to view the environment through its lens, taking pictures of Pokemon in the wild and unlocking new upgrades with the points they score for good shots. While not a full-on Pokemon Snap follow-up, it’s great to see its game play be adapted into the main series.

Pokemon Sun Moon 9616 Finder

Rounding out the trailer was the differences between each version and a side quest that explains how we’re going to come across those Zygarde Complete Formes. While the two versions have always had variations in their character roster, Sun and Moon takes that further with each version being scaled 12 hours apart from each other. So it will be night time during the day in Moon, while Sun follows the normal flow of time. This effects certain events in the game as well, such as some Totem Pokemon being different between each version. Either way, trainers will eventually come across Dexio and Sina, Professor Sycamore’s two assistants from and Y, and help them gather Zygarde Cells throughout the environment, to eventually compile enough to give the legendary Pokemon its true form.

With so much news, there was plenty to love. But what was your favorite part of the trailer? Let us know in the comments!

Steam Siege, the latest Pokemon Trading Card Game expansion, has unleashed some never before seen Pokemon into the game. If you wanted to see what Volcanion, the Steam Pokemon that serves as the last Mythical Pokemon of the and generation, can bring to the battlefield, we have the chance with the new Gears of Fire Theme Deck. Not to be outdone, Hoopa won’t let its spotlight be taken that easily as the previous Mythical release. Its Unbound form takes center stage with the Ring of Lightning deck to oppose the newcomer, with some impressive power of its own. When these two decks square off, which one wins out?

Gears of Fire and Ring of Lightning both have some incredible cards that would be an asset to any deck. Namely, Tierno lets you draw five cards, while Ninja Boy lets you swap out any basic Pokemon in your deck with one on your bench. Considering both Volcanion and Hoopa are Basic, moving them on your bench and building up their energy cards for potential team sweeps makes it very easy to earn a dominating win. Combined with Energy Retrieval and Professor’s Letter, you’ll rarely have trouble finding the Energy you need since both cards let you search your deck for what you need.

But when it comes to energy, that’s where Gears of Fire has an edge. Volcanion’s weaker attack, Power Heater, only needs one Fire Energy for 20 damage, but its secondary effect is what makes it shine. Every time this attack connects, it can pull two Fire Energy cards from the discard pile and add them to two Pokemon on the bench, ensuring that a powerful follow-up can come through if Volcanion retreats or gets taken down. Two more Fire Energy cards unleashes its Steam Artillery attack, doing 100 base damage. Nearly enough to take out any opposing Pokemon in one hit, you’ll be able to clean up the competition real quick.

pokemon-tcg-steam-siege-volcanion

On the other hand, Hoopa can do even more damage, but with a big drawback. Portal Strike, its strongest attack, can dish out 130 HP of damage with only three Psychic Energy cards! Essentially allowing 1 hit KO’s for nearly everything in the Gears of Fire deck. The only problem is that once using this attack, it has to wait two turns to use it again. Leaving it vulnerable against strong opposition will make Hoopa an easier target than its fire powered counterpart. Its weaker attack, Hyperspace Punch, almost makes up for this weakness, allowing you to do 20 damage to any two Pokemon on the opposing field, even if they’re on the bench. If you’re having bad luck with drawing Psychic energy cards, this attack only needs one colorless energy, meaning you can use any type to activate the attack.

pokemon-tcg-steam-siege-hoopa

Aside from the featured monsters, there are some useful cards to lead you to victory, with a few that don’t serve much purpose. Gears of Fire has the weaker roster, with Monferno and Rapidash not serving much purpose. Kingklang’s ability to deal 140 damage in one turn is massive, but needing Steel Energy cards both makes it harder to use, and clutters the deck a bit with energies that the Psychic and Fire types in the deck can’t use. Thankfully, Pyroar makes up for it by having a similar ability to Volcanion. Its first attack deals damage while allowing you to add an extra Fire Energy to it, making sure it can use its stronger move in the following turn.

pokemon-tcg-steam-siege-pyroar

Even more than Hoopa Ring of Lightning‘s real star is Ampharos. Yes, you need to get through evolving Mareep and Flaffy, and it doesn’t have any low tier attacks, requiring three Energy cards to attack, but the payoff is worth it. Though it doesn’t apply in this case, its special ability allows it to move three damage counters to an opposing EX Pokemon, while its main attack, Gigavolt, will either deal 120 damage, or 80 damage and inflict paralysis, making the damaged Pokemon immobile for the following turn. Throw in Hawlucha, who can switch the opponent’s active Pokemon with one on their bench when its added to your bench, or Ambipom and its potential to inflict 60 damage with one energy while thinning out the opponent’s deck. Ring of Lightning has a lot going for it.

pokemon-tcg-steam-siege-ampharos

But in the end, I have to give the nod to Gears of Fire. When playing both decks, I often pulled Energy that I couldn’t use with Ring of Lightning, making it so my team would get devastated after a bad KO. With the Flame deck, Volcanion’s ability makes it much harder to run out of Fire Energy cards, while the deck exclusive Pokemon Center Lady card will completely heal the powerhouse when needed. Even then, Ring of Lightning has so much going for it, that adding cards from either one will make your custom decks work much better. In fact, moving Litwick from Lightning to Fire would be a big help, since its only attack lets you discard cards. Sacrificing the haunted candle might be worth thinning your deck while getting rid of some Fire cards to set Volcanion up for some bench powering.

But what do you think? Which deck do you think works best, and what cards would you use to improve them? Make sure to take a look at our review of the Steam Siege set, and keep checking back for all your Pokemon news!

Briefly: Now that months have gone by, and controversy has (mostly) passed, Pokémon GO players have forgotten about the beloved, server crashing 3-step tracker, nearly forgiven Niantic for the dreaded, miscommunicated, poorly handled 3-step bug, and are just back to good old catchin’ ‘Mons in their spare time.

The craze certainly hasn’t died down (at least in Vancouver) as most individuals that pass me by still tend to be swiping up instead of left or right, and I’m still seeing nearly every gym change ownership about every four seconds. I’m still loving the game, so this is obviously some great news.

In even better news, Niantic is starting to figure out this whole communication thing, and today announced the first major feature update for Pokémon GO, which will allow trainers to have their favourite Pokémon appear next to them on the avatar screen, along with a few other neat changes.

Here’s what’s in store, straight from Niantic: “You will be able to pick your favorite Pokémon from your collection to become your buddy, opening up unique in-game rewards and experiences. Buddy Pokémon will appear alongside your Trainer avatar on your profile screen, adding helpful bonuses such as awarding Candy for walking together. You’ll also have the ability to change your Buddy Pokémon at any time.”

Gaining specific candy for walking with your Pokémon is a fantastic idea. I can’t wait to finally evolve some of the Pokémon that I caught in California this Summer and have never seen since.

Now… when the hell are we going to start seeing those legendary birds?

PokemonBuddy

Nintendo’s 3DS focused Nintendo Direct presentation couldn’t have gone on without some new Pokemon news. As expected, the highly anticipated Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon got their share of the spotlight, with a new version of everyone’s favorite candy and stardust fodder, Rattata. Alongside some new moves and a bonus for early buyers, the reasons to get excited keep on piling up!

First, following the trend of giving the original 150 new forms, Rattata now comes as a dual type, adding Dark to its typical Normal typing. Standing in a bipedal stance and seemingly wearing armor, the things look as terrifying as you would expect a giant rat would. Coming equipped with either the Gluttony or Hustle, the Route 1 mainstay will either eat its equipped berry faster, or have increased attack at the expense of physical move accuracy. We can only assume that a new form will follow for its evolved form, Raticate, but we’ll have to wait a bit longer for official confirmation.

Pokemon Sun Moon Rattata Banner

Next, you know those fancy Z-Moves that we’ve been talking about? The super attacks that are supposed to be type exclusive? Well, now we’ve learned that some Pokemon will now have Z-Moves exclusive to them. Showing off Alola Form Raichu’s Stoked Sparksurfer attack in the trailer below, (as if the surfing themes surrounding it weren’t strong enough), Pikachu’s evolved form will ride its tail through the sky, only to crash down for a devastating electric attack. While without its own Alola Form, Snorlax will squash opponents flat with its Pulverizing Pancake, bringing new meaning to the phrase, “throwing your weight around.”

Speaking of Snorlax, early purchasers will receive a special Munchlax. The pre-evolved version of Snorlax holds Snorlian-Z, a special item that allows it to tap into its most powerful move once evolved. You’ll have until January 11 to redeem it, so make sure you don’t sleep on it.

We must ask though, are Z-Moves completely replacing Mega Evolution? They work similarly by needing a hold item to activate, and the Alola forms seem to cover new versions of old Pokemon. Considering we haven’t heard a peep about Mega Evolving throughout the entire build towards the Sun and Moon release, will it make a return at all? We’ll surely know once we get closer to the game’s November 18 launch, but until then, let’s keep speculating!

Pokemon fans rejoice! On Thursday, September 1st, you can obtain your own Eevee Build-A-Bear! Just like the currently sold-out Pikachu, this fan favorite will be available in-store and online.

eevee1-193351  It’s so cute right?

The 14-inch Eevee will be going for $28, and comes with a trading card stamped with the Build-a-Bear logo. You can also purchase the online-exclusive package for $62, which comes with the plush, a pair of outfits (an Eevee-lution cape and Pokeball pajamas), a 5-in-1 sound clip, and the exclusive trading card. The pajamas are also available separately for $12.50.
Untitled-3
As a Pokemon fan, I’m quite excited for this new plush! The two outfits are quite adorable, but I do hope that Eevee will have future Eevee evolution costumes, similar to Pikachu and its Charizard outfit. Personally, I’d love to see more Poke-plushies at Build-A-Bear!

While Pikachu is sold out, Build-A-Bear announced that more are to come with the release of Eevee.

What do you guys think? Will you be getting one? What Pokemon do you want to see Build-A-Bear put out?

Last week was packed with opportunities to reveal new Pokémon with Gamescom and the Pokémon World Championships both taking place. And by golly, that is exactly what Nintendo did. The Gamescom trailer was released first and featured only one Pokémon, Turtonator. Here is the trailer:

turtonator

Turtonator is a Fire/Dragon-type and knows a unique move, Shell Trap. The move sets a trap at the beginning of the round and if Turtonator is hit with a physical attack in that same turn, Shell Trap will deal a large amount of damage to the opposing Pokémon.

The trailer shown at the Pokémon World Championships showcased four new monsters, unlike the Gamescom’s one. Let’s go through them one by one:

crabrawler

Crabrawler is a Fighting-type, not a Water-type like its appearance may suggest (what with the crab/lobster thing going on). It can have the ability Hyper Cutter or Iron Fist.

sandygast palossand

Here we have Sandygast and its evolution, Palossand. Both are Ghost/Ground-types and have the ability Water Compaction, which will raises its Defense stats by 2 for the duration of the battle every time it is hit with a Water-type move. This ability is unique to Sandygast and Palossand.

stufful

And then there is Stufful, the pre-evolution of the previously revealed Bewear (Kiteruguma in Japan). Like Bewear, it is a Normal/Fighting-type.

Which is your favorite of these newly unveiled Pokémon? Let us know in the comments!

With all this hype surrounding Pokémon Sun and Moon, it is easy to forget some of our earlier monster buddies that got us into the series in the first place. Toy manufacturer Sanei Boueki is helping to keep that nostalgia alive with their new Pokémon Mochi-Fuwa Cushion set. The trio of squishy plushes stars Slowpoke, Chansey, and Spheal.

Screen Shot 2016-08-14 at 11.55.51 AM

Spheal measures 25 centimeters wide, 30 centimeters deep, and 25 centimeters tall. To pre-order this guy, it will cost¥4,500.

Screen Shot 2016-08-14 at 11.55.36 AM

Chansey is 25 centimeters wide, 30 centimeters deep, and 31 centimeters tall. Like Spheal, this pink Pokémon will cost ¥4,500 to pre-order.

Screen Shot 2016-08-14 at 11.54.30 AM

Slowpoke is slightly bigger than the first two: 23 centimeters wide, 46 centimeters long, and 20 centimeters tall. Because of the size difference, it carries a higher price tag of ¥5,000 to preorder.

All three plushes are scheduled to ship in November 2016.

Word to the wise: I would not recommend waiting if you are thinking about ordering one of these guys. AmiAmi’s allotment is already sold out so I imagine HobbyLink Japan‘s will soon meet the same fate.

The Pokémon series has had Teams Rocket, Aqua, Magma, Galactic, Plasma, and Flare. Now get ready for Sun and Moon‘s Team Skull! The team was introduced in today’s trailer. Give it a look below:

Let’s break down the highlights, shall we?

Screen Shot 2016-08-11 at 10.53.59 AM Screen Shot 2016-08-11 at 10.56.45 AM

This trailer not only introduces Team Skull but also the minds behind the Grunts, Admin Plumeria and Boss Guzma. We get a hint that Guzma and our Pokémon Professor Kukui have some sort of shared backstory. On a side note, Team Skull’s theme music is sort of grating. I hope it is one of those tunes that grows on you or is kept to a minimum (the latter is doubtful).

Screen Shot 2016-08-11 at 10.59.15 AMScreen Shot 2016-08-11 at 11.01.06 AM

We were also treated to several new Pokémon reveals in the trailer. The first one shown is a curious Water-type called Wishiwashi. It has the ability, “Schooling,” which allows it to go from its “Solo Form” to a “School Form.” Conditions for this transformation, which appear to take place during battle, weren’t clear.

Screen Shot 2016-08-11 at 11.01.59 AM

Next was the Water-type Pyukumuku, whose design was based on the “Sea Bunny” slug. It has the ability “Innards Out.”

Screen Shot 2016-08-11 at 10.59.56 AM

The mushroom-like Morelull, a Grass/Fairy-type, is a pun on the morel mushroom.

Screen Shot 2016-08-11 at 10.57.51 AM Screen Shot 2016-08-11 at 10.57.46 AM Screen Shot 2016-08-11 at 10.57.24 AM

Finally, we get to three Pokémon that will receive Alola Forms: Raichu, Meowth, and Marowak. Alola Form Raichu is an Electric/Psychic-type, whose ability, “Surge Surfer,” doubles its speed when Electric Terrain is active. Alola Form Meowth is a Dark-type. And Alola Form Marowak is a Fire/Ghost-type. It’s design and movements appear to be based on the fire dancers of Hawaii.

Wow! That is a lot to digest. What do you think of this new trailer? Let us know in the comments!

Rolling into August, Arceus is the next Mythical Pokemon to be featured in the ongoing Pokemon 20 event. Available through codes exclusively available at GameStop, (following Mew and Darkrai before it), the apparent god of Pokemon can now be ours to control.

Introduced as the fourth and final Mythical Pokemon in the fourth generation of games consisting of Pokemon DiamondPearl and Platinum, Arceus is said to be the creator of the Pokemon world. Originally needing the Azure Flute to open up the Hall of Origin, which literally would literally open up a stairway to heaven from the Spear Pillar, we would encounter the mighty Pokemon of creation at level 80, the strongest wild Pokemon in the game’s history. At least, that was the plan, but the Azure Flute was never officially distributed, with Nintendo opting to just handing out Arceus through events instead. Using cheat devices is the only way to encounter the Pokemon as originally intended, which sounds completely worth it since it’s the only way most of us will ever get to encounter it in such an epic fashion.

Pokemon 20 Arceus Screen

As the only Normal type Mythical creature at the time of its release, Arceus has the unique Multitype ability to allow it to become any type its trainer wanted. By equipping it with an elemental plate, Arceus remains one of the game’s most versatile characters since it can literally cover any type weaknesses on any given team. Then again, keeping it as a Normal type would be worth it to retain your item slot for other strategies, but the fact that its signature move, Judgment, also changes type depending on the plate held, means handing it a Plate holds huge advantages for the Pokemon god.

From August 1-24, Arceus can be downloaded at level 100 with Judgment, Recover, Hyper Beam and Perish Song. As with the previous Mythical Pokemon, Arceus will also have his own card and pin set and special merchandise, giving us plenty to buy as we start the second half of the year.

Now that generation four is wrapped up, it’s on to Black and White! Which Pokemon are you looking forward to most as the countdown reaches its second half?

Briefly: Yesterday, you couldn’t play Pokémon GO for the majority of the day, and apparently it was because of hackers.

Today, you couldn’t play Pokémon GO for the majority of the day, and that’s because Niantic finally released the game on the Canadian App and Google Play stores.

At this point, the game becomes less and less reliable with each and every new country that it releases in. While we’re obviously not surprised at all, as Pokémon GO has become a phenomenon like nothing any of us has ever seen before, we’d all love some sort of communication or insight from Niantic in regards to their plans to fix things. Today marked some of the worst server issues that I’ve experienced with the title thus far, with 9/10 thrown Pokéballs requiring a reset of the game.

In any case, we’re glad that the great white North can finally, legitimately play the game… Not that it was really stopping any of us. My recent trip to a tri-lure in Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Park had me hunting with 100+ other trainers, and if you glance at the displays of passers-by anywhere in the Vancouver area, you’d easily see Pokèmon GO running on 7/10 of those devices.

Have you been putting up with the constant servers issues since the game launched last week? What’s the rarest ‘Mon that you’ve lost thus far?

This past week has been a bountiful one for news of Pokémon Sun and Moon. Not only did fans get a brand new trailer but several new species of Pokémon were announced. There is quite a bit of information to go over so let’s take each piece one at a time.

https://youtu.be/TyIkvadJU1Q

I dare you to watch this trailer and not be moved. I get some serious goosebumps every time I see it. In the video, we see the return of the series’ “Pokémon-Amie.” A keen eye will spy a Porygon blowdryer being used in that portion. New features shown included trainers posing during battle. Here’s hoping for some Sailor Moon-style poses!

corocoro8161

Magazine scans containing new Pokémon information were posted on Serebii.net. From the Japanese magazine, CoroCoro, we are introduced to Kiteruguma (Normal/Fighting-type) and Mimikkyu (Ghost/Fairy-type). Kiteruguma is a the red panda mascot costume-looking one on the left page.

corocoro8162
corocoro8163

On the right page is Mimikkyu. This species is draped in a Pikachu costume with its real body hidden underneath (which explains it isn’t an Electric-type).

Pokemon Sun Moon Salandit

In other news, Nintendo revealed Salandit, a Poison/Fire-type. It possesses a brand new ability, Corrosion, that grants Salandit the ability to inflict the poison status on Steel-type and Poison-type Pokémon, which are normally immune.

Tony Kim is also known as “Crazy 4 Comic Con”, the human resource for all things comic book conventions! So of course we’re going to have him on the show to help us prep for SDCC next week! Beyond that though, Tony has launched Hero Within, a new high quality, geek oriented fashion line! We talk a bit about putting the line together and how he is starting with officially licensed Justice League styles! Also, we talk about the psychotic epidemic that is PokémonGO and whether or not it’s just a fad!

The Nintendo Treehouse presentation of Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon was fantastic!  Not only did they introduce new elements to the games, but new Pokemon were revealed as well!  While it’s very easy to note the obvious differences, I will also cover the enhancements to the system that will make the game more accessible to newcomers, as well as help Pokemon veterans!  Let’s have a look at some of these amazing changes!

A clear difference at the start of the game, and one that most already know, is the proportions of the environment in relation to the characters are much more accurate.  Mountains tower way above the character, trees loom with an exact height, and even distance from the edge of a cliff to a beachfront has a sense of immersion.  Within Pokemon battles, not only is the (silly) circle beneath Pokemon eliminated, but also, the Pokemon are shown to be battling right beside their trainers.  This more accurately depicts the theme of Pokemon having a bond with their trainer, but also shows how large Pokemon are in relation to the humans in game.  Just imagine how cool a Snorlax would look right next to its trainer?

In relation to the fighting system, I will provide screenshots to accompany the points I will make:

sm1

For section one, you will notice a handy shortcut to the Pokeball menu.  Veterans of the game will rejoice at this option because previously, you had to flip through several menu screens in order to reach that section.  Section 2 depicts a two dimensional sprite version of the battle, and allows you to tap either Pokemon with your stylus.  Doing so leads us into our next screenshot:

sm4

This screen not only displays typing, as well as other info, but is also a shortcut to see the buffs and debuffs that each Pokémon has!  Veteran players have always had to keep track of this information in their mind–for example, if you do a Swords Dance, the game states that it “sharply raises the Attack stat.” However, delve deeper into competitive battling, and you will know that the move increases your Attack by “two stages” out of six.  If you try to increase past six, the move will fail.  This isn’t directly noted anywhere in the game, so this nice additional screen will allow new players to understand this level of battling, as well as take away the burden of memorization from veteran players.  But that’s not all!

sm2

sm3

These images are seen at different points in the demonstration, but they are very telling.  First, you can press L+A to see a detailed description of the moves, but also, there is fine print underneath the moves that marks how effective a move is against an opposing Pokémon.  Previously, you had to go through several menus to read the description of a move, and type effectiveness was based on a person’s knowledge of the game’s mechanics.  Now that the information is on the screen, new players won’t feel as burdened, and matches may be able to move a lot smoother!  I’m curious if this takes more than typing into effect–for example, an Earthquake will not affect a Pokémon using an Air Balloon as an item at all.  Only time will tell!

The Pokedex is experiencing a huge revamp, but one new feature revealed in the demonstration is the registration screen, where you will see the Pokémon you have captured, as well as all existing evolutions and forms you have yet to experience!  These forms will appear on the screen if they have been previously caught, and all unregistered forms will appear as gray Pokeball icons.

sm5

The demonstration later takes you to a battle with a rival, where I couldn’t help but notice that the backdrop of the battle was special.  Put simply, there is a Street Fighter-like crowd surrounding the Pokémon battle.  Special backdrops aren’t new to the series, but were previously limited to Gym Leader battles in sixth generation.  It looks like this may be expanding even further to rival battles and even more!

sm6

Another new battling style is coming to Pokémon Sun and Moon called Battle Royal!  Not to be confused with its wrestling counterpart (but ironically set in a wrestling ring), this is a four player free-for-all with special rules!  All trainers get to take their turn at the same time and attack whichever Pokémon they would like.  The match doesn’t end until one trainer loses all of their Pokémon.  This decides the loser, but doesn’t necessarily decide the winner.  When the match has ended the game uses a series of algorithms, such as total number of Pokémon defeated, to determine the winner.  Coupled with many of the previous mechanics, the possibilities are endless–ganging up on one player, running stall tactics, etc.  It will be fun to see which new strategies this gameplay style can bring to the table!

sm7sm7Sun and Moon truly looks like a game ready to shake the foundation of the series and bring lots of new players in!  As I find new enhancements throughout the year, I will be sure to let you all know!  How do you feel about the improvements?  Please let us know in the comments!

If 721 Pokemon wasn’t enough for you to catch, get ready for three more!

Revealed during the Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon Nintendo Treehouse demo, we were able to meet Yungoos, Pikipek and Grubbin. Seemingly some of the first Pokemon we’ll meet by filling that Rattata, Pidgey and Caterpie role, each one has its own unique typing and abilities to help them in battle. Yungoos for example, is a Normal type that has either the new Stakeout ability or Strong Jaw, which increases the strength of bite based attacks. Pikipek is a woodpecker that falls under the typical Flying / Normal typing, with Keen Eye or Skill Link as its possible abilities, the latter of which is especially useful since it ensures that multi hit attacks will always strike the maximum of five times. Lastly, Grubbin is a Bug Pokemon with the Swarm ability, making it more likely to run into wild Pokemon in the field.

Check out the trailer below to see them in action, alongside the official in game confirmation of the Mythical Pokemon, Magearna, who gets a Special Attack boost when its partner faints in a multi battle thanks to its Soul Heart ability, (and is a perfect way to strengthen its signature move, Fleur Cannon,) and an overview of the new Battle Royal battle type! What are your thoughts on the first of many new monsters we’ll be able to catch?
