In a follow up to yesterday’s piece it’s appearing that Fox is just giving up on the Daredevil reboot and allowing the rights to revert back to Marvel. This project has been in the works for awhile now but just kept hitting road bump after road bump. Following his tweets yesterday director Joe Carnahan (The Grey) clarified a bit on what his tweets meant today.

Guys. To clarify. DD pitch was tremendous and everyone flipped for it. The clock ticked down at Fox, that’s why it went tits up.

I will post the piece we did since it should be seen be all now…then you guys decide.

With less than two months before they had to get a movie into production before losing the rights it was pretty apparent that this would end up happening. However, I was quite interested in seeing what Carnahan had in mind after reading about it. It actually sounded like it would be a good movie. Well, he could always pitch the idea to Marvel and see if they want to go with it and give him a chance. However, the problem with that right there is that Marvel has a pretty big stable of characters and films planned already meaning that it doesn’t necessarily mean that we will see the man without fear on the big screen anytime soon.

Last week reports hit the internet that there would be an exchange between Fox and Marvel Studios to allow Fox time to get their planned Daredevil reboot into production. Then reports came in that Fox would rather lose the rights to the character than give up the characters that Marvel was asking for. Well, it’s not looking too good for the movie in general because in order to hold on to the rights they need to get it into production by October 10th. Earlier today director Joe Carnahan (The Grey) who was set to direct the upcoming reboot made some very discouraging tweets about the project.

Think my idea for a certain retro, red-suited, Serpico-styled superhero went up in smoke today kids.

We shall see. Time is NOT on anyone’s side.

This could either mean one of two things. Either Fox is giving up the rights on Daredevil and letting them revert back to Marvel or  they are going to go with another filmmaker who could get this movie going faster than Carnahan. Either way it doesn’t look good for the man without fear right now. We’ll be sure to keep you updated.

If you didn’t know by now, filming has begun on The Wolverine, and details are starting to leak out in small bits. The movie is set to follow Frank Miller and Chris Claremont’s legendary story arc in Japan. But this has many fans worried still due to the horrendous storyline and over abundance of characters that were seen in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Hugh Jackman has however made numerous statements that make it seems that, just like many of us, wants to forget the last film. And now it appears that the film will be more of a reboot and less of a sequel. In a recent interview with Total Film Magazine Jackman stated the following:

“We’ve deliberately not called it Wolverine 2 because we want it to be placed and feel like a standalone picture. With an all-new cast and setting it in Japan, it’s going to give us a whole new visual aesthetic. The approach to character means we won’t be overloaded with mutants and teams and the like, so it’ll be more character-based. I think in many ways it will feel like a completely different X-Men film.”

It’s a pretty smart move to keep the title as being The Wolverine (which was actually Darren Aronofsky’s decision) to separate itself as much as possible from the previous film. And the fact that the film will not be crammed full of unnecessary characters is also good news being that some of the previous X-films have definitely suffered due to an abundance of extra characters leading to what felt like a half-assed pieced together story.

For awhile it almost seemed like this movie would never see the light of day. Especially so after Aronofsky walked away from the project. Jackman even admits that he  was worried about it never happening.

“I’m just really glad it’s happening. For a while it’s felt like a rocky ride. I think it’s the best idea we’ve had, the strongest script we’ve had and that now we really have an opportunity to make something really great. I’ve been waiting for it so long now. I think half the material in my one-man show is about the wait for The Wolverine!”

I was a little more excited myself to see what Aronofsky would have done with the character than Mangold but this news does give us a little sigh of relief. Hopefully they can pull this off and re-vitalize the franchise like First Class did.

The Wolverine claws its way into theaters on July 26, 2013.

Well, it looks like David Duchovny aka Agent Mulder may be pushing for a third X-Files film to happen. He also has an idea on what was wrong The X-Files: I Want To Believe which didn’t perform too great nor was very well received. He also goes on to talk trash on Green Lantern in here for some reason. Maybe he never got a refund from Fandango?

I would love to do another film, or more.  I think we’re all game for it.  I know I’m kind of perplexed that Fox isn’t more [enthusiastic].  Here’s a homegrown property that you don’t have to go buy, like fuckin’ Green Lantern or something, to make it.  Here you’ve got an actual action franchise that’s your own.  It’s weird to me, but I’m not an executive.  I don’t know if they made the Green Lantern either, but I’m just using that as an example of, “Why make that film?  Why not make a homegrown franchise that is excellent, and that has proven to be excellent and interesting?”  I don’t get it, but that’s not my business.

I think Chris [Carter] is probably working on an idea, so we’ll see.  Unfortunately, with the last one, they didn’t spend the money to compete in a summer fashion, and they brought it out in the summer.  It should be a summer film.  It should be an action film.  But, the last one we made was not.  The last one we made was a dark, contemplative, small $25 million film.  It was basically an independent film.  When you come out against Batman, it’s not going to happen.  You’re not going to be sold as an independent film, and you’re not going to compete against Batman with $25 million.

Does anyone really need or want a third X-Files movie besides Mr. Duchovny? I am fine without it but I am sure there are some die-hard fans that would love to see it. Will we ever see it? Maybe, but I wouldn’t recommend holding your breath.

Production on the new season of Arrested Development for Netflix begins tomorrow! It appears that the entire cast consisting of Jason Bateman, Jeffrey Tambor, Portia de Rossi, David Cross, Jessica Walter, Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Alia Shawkat and Tony Hale are all in final negotiations and expected to return. Each of the new episodes will focus on one member of the Bluth clan, although some episodes may feature multiple characters. Arrested Development will be in production through the fall.

The new season is set to be a bridge between the original series and the lon rumored Arrested Development movie. However the door is being left open to doing an additional season if the initial 10 new episodes prove successful. All 10 new episodes are set to be available on Netflix at the same time sometime in 2013 but no premiere date has been set yet.

Well it’s a move that should come as a surprise to know one. With Ridley Scott’s Prometheus having grossed a good, but not great, $303 million globally on it’s $130 million budget it was only a matter of time until Fox began developing a sequel.

According to THR Fox and Ridley Scott are pushing ahead and are beggining to move forward with a sequel. They are talking with new screenwriters due to the fact that Damon Lindelof, who co-wrote the first film, may not be available. Stars Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace are signed on already.

“Ridley is incredibly excited about the movie, but we have to get it right. We can’t rush it,” says Fox president of production Emma Watts, who also has overseen the successful reboots of the X-Men and Planet of the Apes franchises by turning over the reigns to innovative filmmakers.

The sequel is expected to land in theaters in 2014 or 2015.

Sony wants Marc Webb to return for the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man, and even more importantly even though he sounded uncertain months ago, Webb wants to return too. But there is something that is keeping Webb from signing on for the sequel at the moment. Back when Webb directed 500 Days Of Summer for Fox Searchlight, he was locked in for one more movie with them. Apparently it seems the execs over at Fox gave him a reprieve to go work on The Amazing Spider-Man for Sony.

And according to the LA Times it seems Fox will let him sign on to direct the sequel. But there’s a catch. There is always a catch.

Fox is considering giving its blessing to Webb on “Spidey” but in exchange would extract a two-picture commitment from Webb. It would be a steep price to pay for the filmmaker — most in-demand directors don’t like locking themselves up that long — but it would free him to return to one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises.

If no agreement can be reached, Sony is going to have to begin a search for a replacement director pretty quickly, as the movie is lined up to hit theaters in 21 months. Alex Kurzman, Roberto Orci, and James Vanderbilt are currently working on a script for it. I hope Webb returns myself because of the great job he did with the first chapter but can completely understand if he walks away due to the commitment that Fox is looking for.

With Jeremy Slater currently writing a script and Josh Trank attached to direct the movie, it definitely seems that we will be seeing The Fantastic Four hitting the big screen again soon. But who should play the iconic Marvel characters? Who should they go head to head with? Us at Geekscape have some ideas…

Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic (Andrew Lincoln)

Now, I know he may not be able to take time out of his busy schedule with The Walking Dead. But if Lincoln could I think he would a great choice for Reed as well as drawing plenty of fans of The Walking Dead in.

Susan Storm/The Invisible Woman (Chalize Theron)

Let’s keep it real ladies and gentlemen…we all want a sexy Sue Storm right? But we also want her to be kind of a bad ass. Who better than Charlize Theron to accomplish that?

Ben Grimm/The Thing (Joel Edgerton)

If the picture above doesn’t sell you then you may want to go watch Warrior. Edgerton is a great actor, looks the part and definitely has the body type.  The Thing should definitely be motion capture this time around versus being live action because that one really didn’t work out last time.

Johnny Storm/The Human Torch (Garrett Hedlund)

We’ve already seen him do the young and rebellious role before. He did a great job at it so why not let him do it again?

So, we have our team. Now who should we see as the fantastic family’s first villan?

Harvey Rupert Elder/The Mole Man (Eddie Marsan)

Wait, I am NOT making Dr. Doom the first villain the Fantastic Four go against? Yes, you read that correct. Because in the comics the first villain that they go head to head with is The Mole Man. And much like The Amazing Spider-Man I think we should have a few villains establishing the team while we have Doom in the background until it’s finally time to bring him in much like The Amazing Spider-Man is doing with Norman Osborn. And on that note…

Victor Von Doom pre-Dr. Doom (Jonathan Rhys Meyers)

Not only is he in the same age range as Andrew Lincoln (making sure of that due to them attending the same university together) but have you ever seen Meyers on The Tudors? Trust me when I say that if anyone out there is perfect to play a young Victor Von Doom it is this guy. Why not have him just be Dr. Doom you say? Because what we need is to establish that character. Make him interesting as we see his descent into madness. We don’t need to jump straight to the man in the mask until we know who the man is.

Would you see this Fantastic Four on the big screen? Or do you have anyone you would rather see in these roles? Sound off in the box below!

Here’s the first trailer for Ang Lee’s Life of Pi. A scene from the movie was shown prior to Prometheus but seeing as it really showed an out of context scene I had no idea what to make of it. This trailer gives a glimpse at the extrodinary Life of Pi.

The story of an Indian boy named Pi, a zookeeper’s son who finds himself in the company of a hyena, zebra, orangutan, and a Bengal tiger after a shipwreck sets them adrift in the Pacific Ocean.

The film is based on the bestselling novel by Yann Martel and stars Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Gérard Depardieu and Toby Maguire. It opens November 21st.

Jack Bauer fans rejoice! It would seem that fans of the show ’24’ just got some good news. Kiefer Sutherland recently told  Craveonline that the script for the ’24’ movie is ready to go and they plan on filming it when Sutherland’s new show Touch wraps up it’s second season.

“Timing,” Sutherland said. “We didn’t have a script ready for that until very close to the end of ‘Touch.’ We knew we were coming back so there was a very finite window for me to make the film, to try to prep it, cast it and all of those other things. It was just unrealistic for Fox to try and make it, so they pushed it for next break.”

Fox pulled the plug back in March over budget and star salary issues. So with a script now ready to go the only question is not when it will get made but how much will it get made for. Fox previously only wanted to spend $30 million to get it made while producers felt they needed at least $40 million.

Hopefully they can come to an agreement on the budget and set a date to start filming. If the movie starts filming next year then the earliest it could come out is 2014. That would mean it’ll have been four long years since fans have seen Jack Bauer kick some ass. That’s four years too long if you ask me.  The world needs Jack Bauer and it needs him now!

Last week we reported that Jessica Biel had been added to the cast of The Wolverine and would be playing Viper. Talks have since broken down and Ms. Biel will not be in the movie, but that hasn’t stopped Fox from moving on and finding a new actress for the role.

Twitchfilm is reporting that Fox is in talks with actress Svetlana Khodchenkova to take over the role. Khodchenkova is a relatively unknown actress to people state-side, she was most recently seen in last year’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. The movie is scheduled to begin shooting next month in Sydney, Australia.

Hugh Jackman will once again don the claws as Wolverine and James Mangold is directing. The Wolverine claws its way into theaters July 26, 2013.

So, now even if this movie sucks you can watch it for the sheer enjoyment of the beauty of Jessica Biel being in it. You read that right kiddies. Ms. Biel has joined the cast as Victoria/Viper.

According to Marvel lore Viper bounces between good and not so good and she holds some sway over Wolverine but is mostly a foe to the X-Men and Avengers.

I hated that last Wolverine movie but the recent castings has definitely increased the interest I have in this flick that started with James Mangold directing.

‘The Wolverine’ claws its way into theaters July 26, 2013.

Only days after announcing that they were moving forward with the Josh Trank helmed reboot it appears Fox has a writer penning out the script. A young up and coming writer named Jeremy Slater has been attached to the film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter:

Fox is really hustling with its Fantastic Four reboot.

‘Chronicle’ Director Josh Trank on His Surprising Success, Possible Sequel
Just days after putting Chronicle director Josh Trank on the project, the studio is finalizing a deal to have Jeremy Slater write the script.

While FOX may have no big announcements at this years Comic-Con we do have some news for you. It seems David Slade has walked away from ‘Daredevil’ due to his commitment to direct the ‘Hannibal’ pilot. This is good news for Marvel Studios due to FOX is now facing a fall deadline to begin shooting or the rights for the character revert back to Marvel. FOX may get a new director rush this film out to hold on to the rights though and once again leave us with a not so good taste in our mouths. ‘Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance’ received similar treatment.

FOX is also finally moving forward with the reboot of ‘Fantastic Four’ with Josh Trank (‘Chronicle’) attached to direct. Trank has apparently put all of his other projects on hold to  make this movie first and it may go into production next spring in order to see a 2014 release.

Update: Casting news is just pouring in now! Heat Vision is reporting that not only is Will Yun Lee been cast but Brian Tee (Grim,” “Burn Notice,” The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drifthas also been cast.

Tee is playing Noburo Mori, a corrupt minister of justice who is about to marry the daughter of a yakuza crime lord (the daughter is Wolverine’s love interest).

Update: Deadline is reporting that Will Yun Lee (Total Recall, Hawai 5-0,” Elektra) has been cast as Harada in The Wolverine. In the comics, Kenuichio Harada is also known as the Silver Samurai. Does this mean that we will get to see Silver Samurai and his badass armor? I can only hope!

Superherohype is reporting that sources inside the production of The Wolverine have told them that casting  is starting to come together on the movie.  So far four new cast members have been added to the cast with more to come:

Hiroyuki Sanada (“Lost,” Rush Hour 3The Last Samurai) is set to play Shingen; veteran actor Hal Yamanouchi (The Life Aquatic with Steve ZissouPushSinbad of the Seven Seas) plays Yashida; and new discoveries Tao Okamoto and Rila Fukushima will star as Mariko and Yukio, respectively.

The Wolverine is set for release on July 26, 2013  and is being directed by James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma, Knight and Day, Walk the Line) from a script by Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual SuspectsJack Reacher). Hugh Jackman will once again don the claws as Logan aka Weapon X aka Wolverine. The story is reported to be heavily inspired by the Chris Claremont and Frank Miller four-issue mini-series from 1982. Filming is set to take place in Australia and Japan.

I’m really hoping that this movie is decent and can make me forgot the abomination that was X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I still have nightmares about how crappy that thing was. Here’s to hoping that Fox can follow-up the awesomeness that was X-Men: First Class and with The Wolverine and give Logan the kind of movie we know he deserves.

The world is about to be invaded and conquered by time traveling Observers from the future. Our heroes must find some way here in the present to stop the take-over from happening… or they must find some way to overthrow their oppressors in the future.

There will be a ‘Fringe’ panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Sunday July 15th. “The Comic-Con panel is something I always look forward to, but this year it’s bittersweet,” says exec producer J.H. Wyman. “I think we have lots of good stuff in store for them.” Attendees will receive the teaser poster shown above.

David Cronenberg’s ‘The Fly’ starring Jeff Goldblum was critically acclaimed. However the sequel that followed did not quite receive the same praise. Since then it’s had an aborted sequel and remake. In 2009 it was rumored that Cronenberg would be directing a second remake of the film. Addressing the rumors he stated that it wasn’t exactly a remake but more a “sort of” sequel.

In 2011 Cronenberg stated in an interview “I have written a script that is more of a strange lateral, let’s say oblique sequel than it is a true sequel, and it’s certainly not a remake of the original. It’s financed by Fox, and whether it will get made or not, I cannot say at the moment because there are a lot of up-in-the-air factors that deal with internal studio politics and a bunch of other things that I’m not in control of. But I would make it if they greenlight it, let’s put it that way.”

And in a recent interview with Empire he further elaborated:

“Well, I did talk to Fox, because my agent found out that they were approaching people to do a remake of my film. He sort of said, ‘Well, you know, what about David?’ And they said, ‘Well, we never thought of that!’ I think they’d been to Guillermo del Toro and Michael Bay. I said, ‘Long ago I proposed a sequel to Mel Brooks when he said he wanted to make a sequel.’ He didn’t like what I proposed because he said it wasn’t the same as the original movie. ‘A sequel,’ he said, ‘should be more of the same.’ And I said, ‘Well, Mel, then I’m not interested.’ And he went off and did his sequels and they had nothing to do with me and they weren’t very successful. But I still had this idea in mind – which no, I won’t tell you – and I said to Fox, ‘I’ll write that idea up because, as I think of it, it could be interesting.’ And they were excited about it enough to pay me to write a script. And then for various reasons it kind of got bogged down. I don’t know exactly why. It seems now that it’s not going to happen. But it’s a script that I like and would do. It’s not exactly a sequel, and it’s certainly not a remake. More a meditation … it involves teleportation.”

With the recent announcement of the sequel to ‘X-Men: First Class’ having a release date of July 18, 2014 it is highly possible that details to the film may start to drip out and one rumor already has.

Aint It Cool is reporting something that will quite possibly make fans happy

“One of my little birds Weapon X recently dropped me some information that 20th Century Fox had recently registered the title DAYS OF FUTURE PAST with the MPAA Title Registration Bureau. The Bureau exists for studios and productions companies to stake their claims on certain titles that they intend to release and distribute, so that others can stray from using a similar title.”

Fans have been begging for Sentinels since almost around the time of ‘X2: X-Men United’ and we were given that major tease of one in ‘X3’. I was so excited when I heard there was Sentinels in ‘X3’ and as soon as the scene ended all I could say was “…wait. That was it?!”

Now some of you younger fans may not have any idea what I’m talking about here. So, from Wikipedia here a little info about ‘Days Of Future Past’ and just why this could be a very exciting story to take elements from:

“The storyline alternates between present day, in which the X-Men fight Mystique’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and a future timeline caused by the X-Men’s failure to prevent the Brotherhood from assassinating Senator Robert Kelly. In this future universe, Sentinels rule the United States, and mutants live in internment camps. The present-day X-Men are forewarned of the possible future by a future version of their teammate Kitty Pryde, whose mind traveled back in time and possessed her younger self to warn the X-Men. She succeeds in her mission and returns to the future, but despite her success, the future timeline still exists as an alternative timeline rather than as the actual future.”

The story also featured huge involvements from Rachel Summers and Nimrod. And while a direct adaptation is unlikely as hell to happen (especially since Shadowcast was like 16 in ‘X3’…unless they’re going to somehow ignore that)… incorporating elements could happen and I definitely have faith in Vaughn after seeing ‘First Class’. Another interesting element is that months back Rob Lifefeld has tweeted “Also excited to discuss possibilities of Cable in future X-films!!!” Could this film be a way to incorporate Nathan Summers? Only time will tell! Pun intended.

‘Prometheus’ the Ridley Scott prequel to ‘Alien’ that isn’t a prequel has already started off strongly this weekend. Going head to head with ‘Snow White And The Huntsman’ the film is the biggest opening day for a Ridley Scott film ever in the UK.

We have had a superb start with Prometheus opening a clear No. 1 grossing £2.2m ($3.39M). This includes an estimated £200k ($306K) from special midnight screenings on Thursday,” the studio told Deadline.

The two x70mm IMAX locations in the UK (London and Manchester) reported sold out showings all day yesterday and even late night screenings were sold out in advance. ‘Prometheus’ has also broken records for advance IMAX screenings set by ‘Harry Potter And The Deathly Hollows Part 2’ and ‘Avatar’. It could have performed even stronger in that department but most of the IMAX shows were only playing one evening performance on top of MIB3′ because Sony had a 2-week agreement with IMAX digital.

The movie opens here on Friday and I for one will be there at midnight on Thursday.

Amongst others Fox has set release dates for sequels to ‘X-Men: First Class’ and ‘Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes’.

First up we have on Memorial Day (May 23, 2014), Fox unleashes ‘Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes’ The sequel to the $483 million grossing ‘Rise Of The Planet Apes’ Rupert Wyatt will be returning to direct. Andy Serkis has been confirmed to be returning as Caesar.

On July 18, 2014 we will see the release of the currently untitled sequel to the highly acclaimed and successful ‘X-Men: First Class’. Matthew Vaughn will return to direct and Bryan Singer will return to produce. Most of the cast has been confirmed as returning. Vaughn has previously stated about the sequel that “First Class is similar toBatman Begins’ where you have the fun of introducing the characters and getting to know them, but that takes time. But with the second one, you can just get on with it and have a rollicking good time. That’s the main difference between ‘Batman Begins’ and ‘The Dark Knight'”

Also on what new characters to expect “We will only have one more new character. I won’t say who he… I won’t say who he or she is! But we will only be bringing one more new character in, because, I think, as Professor X is in a wheelchair, Magneto needs to have a nemesis he can fight with. Someone that will be his equal. I know who it is. It would be nice if I could say something, but I can’t, mate!”

Other announced releases:

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters’ will hit theaters August 16, 2013.

‘Robopocalypse’ will be released April 25, 2014.

And finally… after the success of ‘Titanic 3D’ Fox has decided to re-release ‘Independence Day’ in 3D on July 3, 2013

Good news “Fringe” fans, Deadline is reporting that Fox has picked up the ratings challenged series for a fifth and final season. The renewal comes after months of negotiations between Fox, Warner Brs TV, and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot. The final season will consist of 13 episodes and will give fans the proper send off that they have long been hoping for.

Co-creator/executive producer JJ Abrams had this to say regarding the renewal, “We are thrilled and beyond grateful that Fox – and our fans – have made the impossible possible: Fringe will continue into a fifth season that will allow the series to conclude in a wild and thrilling way.”

Here’s a teaser trailer Fox has released for season five. While it may not be “six seasons and a movie,” I’m glad to see “Fringe” is ending on it’s own terms rather than cancellation.

For those that follow X-Men, particularly the latest spinoff ‘The Wolverine‘ which will be directed by James Mangold (Director of the movie, Cop Land), the latest development for the film is that it’s going to be shot at least in part in Sydney, Australia, due to a $12.8 million government payoff from Australia as well as other incentives. What’s even more interesting is that at this time, Sydney is going to be the primary location for shooting the film when the story dictates that Wolverine will be traveling to Japan in the story. This means that every shot of Japan will essentially be done in Australia.

At this time, at least $80 million is going to be spent in Australia, including visual effects, while post production work will be in the US. It’s certainly an interesting development, as you would figure that since the story takes place in Japan, it would be a logical decision to shoot in Japan since the primary story takes place in Japan. However, ultimately, it does depend on the production team in how he chooses to use Sydney’s locations to convince the audience that Wolverine is in Japan. There are a lot of new film stages in and around Sydney, but let’s just hope that we don’t spot a kangaroo or a  koala bear in the background of some of the exterior shots. Then again, that would already make it way better than “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” aka “The Tale of Jimmy Logan: The Man They Call Wolverine” aka “Not What We Considered a Real Wolverine Movie by Any Stretch”.

James Mangold’s “The Wolverine” is expected for a July 2013 release.

Arguably the best super hero movie on the year so far has been first time director Josh Trank’s Chronicle, which wasn’t even based on any actual comic books and was an original property. Even before Chronicle came out to rave reviews and good box office, there was talk that Fox wanted Trank to helm their upcoming Fantastic Four reboot. Tranks denied all of these rumors, but it looks like there might be another comic book style movie he is doing instead: Venom

According to the Los Angeles Times, it appears Josh Trank is being eyed to do a big screen version of the classic Spider-Man villan for Sony. Sony own the movie rights to Spider-Man and all related characters, including Venom. A Venom film has been simmering at the back burner at the studios, dating back at least to 2008 and going back before plans for this years’s newly rebooted Spidey franchise. Gary Ross negotiated to direct a Venom film back in 2009 but moved on to other projects, including the upcoming “Hunger Games.”Screenwiter Jacob Estes wrote a draft of a “Venom” script several years ago, but producers are seeking a new writer for the project. Apparently, the Ross version had Venom as less a villain and more an antihero, much as he was in the late 90’s Marvel comics. You know, the ones everyone hated.

The question is. will this tie in to the upcoming reboot of Spider-Man, or somehow divorce Venom from the Spider-Man mythology all together? The latter seems stupid, but unless somehow Eddie Brock is introduced in the next movie as well as the symbiote, I’m not surehow this is going to all work. Personally,  I would have much preferred Trank’s take on the Fantastic Four than Venom, as that is the one Marvel property that has never really been done justice yet. All the other Marvel Icons can at least count one to two really good movies to their names.

Chronicle director Josh Trank looks to be leaving Fox for Sony, and trading in the FF for a played out Spidey villain.
