If you’re new to Geekscape, or don’t pay attention to us that well, you know we are HUGE fans of the Comikaze Expo. One of our current favorite shows is Fangasm even! So when I booked a trip for Mega64’s Gamedays meetup at Disneyland and found out it landed the same weekend as Comikaze I flipped. I was finally going to be able to attend the convention!

I was wheels down in LA late Wednesday and got up the next morning ready to go! I met up with our fearless leader and the Crazy Canuck at the LA Convention Center. We setup the booth and it looked great! The new steel and table covering really made us look like professionals!

Me, Derek, Georg and Jon in the new booth!

We snagged lunch and prepped for the radio show, heading down to the heart of LA. Hollywood Boulevard. Watching Derek slowly becoming more and more amazed the farther we traveled down the Walk of Fame was adorable. Our little Canadian was amazed by the wonders of the big city, though when approached by a man offering free Hip Hop CD’s we couldn’t stop him. He was dragged into a conversation about the in’s and out’s of independent Hip Hop. Turns out the free Hip Hop was actually $10.

We quickly left that situation and bounded into the Toadhop Network Studios. The place was amazing and seeing it from behind the webcam was great. I got to meet the entire cast of Fangasm, and got my street passes in as well! If you want to watch that episode check it out HERE!

We parted ways and went back to our respective beds. For tomorrow, the first full day of Comikaze 2013 was to be had. It was also the 2nd time I was on Public Transit and ultimately the last. The horrors I saw that day cannot be retold.

I arrived at the convention center, Press Badge in hand, and the excitement was too much for me to handle. Seeing all the cosplayers and nerds walking towards Comikaze put a giggle in my step…giggle? You get what I mean. We got the booth all ready, got our two demo reels going on the TV and waited. Soon the countdown began over the PA. 15 minutes to floor open. 10 minutes. 5. It’s always a combination of terror and excitement when the flood gates open. The hordes of fans seeking their own must have pieces of swag, the elaborate cosplayers and their props. They all are bitter sweet. Sweet that a large group of like minded individuals can congregate and share their passions with each other (Plus StreetPassing). Bitter that they will utlitamtely end up in your way at some point and getting from Row 600 to Row 800 would take 30 minutes.

What Comikaze has that most other cons I’ve gone to lack, is the genuineness of the crowd. The people attending are the real fans of the books, shows and toys they are there to see. Gone are the wannabe rockstars of SDCC, and in their place rabid, but polite fans. I pulled Derek out into the aisle and put my arms out, and I began to spin. “YOU CAN’T DO THIS AT SAN DIEGO CAN YOU DEREK?!”. I then realized I was becoming a bother when our booth neighbors all collectively gave me the grump face. I decided it was time to explore the floor!

ComiKaze Floor 1
The thick of it!

The diversity of booths and vendors at Comikaze is amazing. There are artists, film makers, comic vendors, toys, clothing and even robot makers here. It really runs the gambit and you can see the passion in everyone’s booth.

We made a wide path. I asked a booth how much their Carnage action figure was, and it turns out it was the guys from the Travel Channel show Toy Hunter! So look for us on the upcoming new season! The video game museum setup a nice area where you could play some classic games from the arcade to the N64. We rounded the outside, some more, and ran into the Build WALL-E Project guys. They had a fully functional WALL-E robot, fully articulated and down right amazing.

By the time we made our way the entire loop of the hall, a great deal of time had passed. In my possession was a brand new IDW MLP Art Print Comic and my very first ZOM! Running into Rick after all these years was a great feeling. I FINALLY GOT A ZOM!

The panel lineup for day one was fairly laxed, with the big ones coming Saturday and Sunday, so we ogled some Cosplayers a bit and returned to the booth. Our neighbors were great, the folks at Troma are basically our convention buddies and seem to always be following us!

Before I knew it, day one was coming to a close. The next day was twice as long with twice as much amazing stuff going on. So we hit up home early and got ready for more Comikaze!

Be sure to stay posted here for my coverage of Day 2 as well as the incredible Mega 64 Gamedays 2013 meetup at Disney!

Straight out of BlizzCon we got our first big announcement of the convention. World of Warcraft is getting ANOTHER expansion pack. This time we go back to Draenor the home of the Orcs, with a bunch of nice new features to boot! Take a look at the trailer below!

This new edition if rife with new features. The most noticeable one is that all the original races will be getting updated and upgraded character models. New animations and high def textures are just the beginning. The level cap has been pushed up to 100, with the ability to start new characters at 90 so you can fast track to the top.

The biggest gameplay mechanic that has been added is the Garrisons. Players will be able to build and upgrade a home base of sorts. Setting up trade routes, building up the economy and defenses are some of the things you get to do with your own private fort. Think Warcraft III kind of stuff.

No release date yet, but if you’re an intrepid WoW fan you will be on top of this release!

You can color me excited!

Probably the best launch title for the Xbox One, Dead Rising 3 looks to be the perfect combination of the wackiness we’ve come to know from the series, and a more serious zombie disaster. Well the guys over at IGN got to play the first 25 minutes of the game, and they were kind enough to record it and put it up on YouTube! Check it out wont ya?

You can get your hands on Dead Rising 3 AT LAUNCH! November 22nd!

Briefly: It’s no secret that Battlefield 4 is plagued with issues. Server crashes, client side hit detection being way off, and broken netcode just to name a few. Well, it appears that all these bugs can be attributed to EA Games rushing BF4 out through QA before proper testing was finished.

The guys over at BF4Central posted a conversation with a supposed DICE QA Tester and a Reddit Moderator. The full story can be read below and it is fairly apparent why BF4 isn’t the game it should be.

battlefield-4-qa

Now, take this with a grain of salt as we can’t confirm any of this, but it would really explain the huge issues the release has been having.

Are you playing Battlefield 4? How’s your experience going? Sound out below!

Halo: Spartan Assault was very well received when it was first announced. Everyone rejoiced! Then it was announced it was going to be on Windows Mobile devices only, and many people stopped rejoicing. Then there was a bit of leaked code that talked about controller support. Everyone rejoiced yet again! Then 343 Studios said there were no plans to bring it to the consoles. The rejoicing stopped…once again. Well folks, get your rejoicing shoes back on because, YES! IT HAS BEEN CONFIRMED! Halo: Spartan Assault is getting an official Xbox One and Xbox 360 release! Check the new trailer below!

Play longer than ever in a new online Co-op mode, and watch each other’s backs with all-new Co-op missions.

Engage in Operation Hydra, the expansion from the Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 game that brings mystery and a chilling addition to the single player Campaign.

Wage war against a persistent and overwhelming enemy – encounter the Flood for the first time in Halo: Spartan Assault.

Go in strong with an expanded arsenal that brings you more weapons, more armor abilities, and more upgrades – it’s the ultimate Spartan Assault experience!

Pricing and availability have not been announced, but expect Halo: Spartan Assault to be available very near the launch of Xbox One on the Xbox Live Arcade.

We reported just yesterday on a new Alien filled game mode for the upcoming Call of Duty: Ghosts. Well the people at Activision reacted quickly and put out this trailer, hot on the heels of the leak. Check out the Extinction trailer below!

Call of Duty: Ghosts introduces Extinction – an all-new 1-4 player cooperative game mode featuring a unique blend of fast-paced survival action, FPS base defense, scavenging and class leveling.

Gone are the much loved zombies, and in their place are some spooky looking aliens! Admittedly, when I first saw the leaked photos I was a little skeptical, but this trailer has brought me back. The  environments look interesting and the gameplay looks like a compelling change of pace from the original zombies missions.

You can get your hands on CoD: Ghosts on PC, PS3, XBOX 360 and Wii U November 5th. It will also be available on the PS4 and Xbox One at launch.

It’s no secret that us at Geekscape are huge fans of the Mega64 Boyz. I personally have been watching their skits and full length episodes for YEARS, and I cannot give them any higher praise. Their humor, delivery and writing are amazing and they always blow me away. Hell, they are the ones who turned me onto The Aquabats!  So when I received an update from YouTube that Mega64 uploaded a new video, I was expecting a new skit. What I got was this awesome trailer for their 10 year anniversary Blu-Ray collection! Watch it with me below!

If you’re a fan of Mega64’s full length episodes that you are probably as excited as I am right now. They’ve been hinting at possible Blu-Ray releases for a few years now, and we finally FINALLY get a doozy of a collection.

No official write up yet as to what specifically we can expect to find in the Blu-Ray set. From the trailer and their Live Stream from tonight, the guys ran down a few of the features.

All three seasons of the Mega 64 show. Versions 1,2, and 3 REMASTERED!

Commentary, original AND the updated 10 year edition

All Easter Eggs and extras from the first run. As well as things that SHOULD have been put out on the DVDs in the first place!

Even that small bit of news, it is still an amazing package to behold! Now you can get your hands on The 10th anniversary collection of Mega 64 this November 29th during their Black Friday sale. They always have great deals as well as new special goodies to behold!

So make sure you check out their official Mega64 site for more details once they are released!

Earlier this year at E3, Microsoft announced their new program Games With Gold. It offered 2 free Xbox 360 titles every month to all Gold members. Games range from Arcade exclusives to full blown blockbusters like Halo 3. From a press release today the guys up in Redmond have said it’s here to stay.

At E3 2013, we launched Games with Gold as a limited-time program to thank our Xbox Live Gold members. Within that short period of time, we’ve seen an overwhelming response, with more than 120 million hours played with Games with Gold titles. Today, as a part of the “Week of Xbox Live,” we’re excited to announce that we are making Games with Gold an ongoing benefit for Xbox Live Gold members on Xbox 360.

Whether they are blockbuster AAA or popular arcade titles, Games with Gold continues to offer a diverse mix of games with two free Xbox 360 titles a month – yours to keep and at no additional cost. According to recent surveys, 97 percent of participating members have given their stamp of approval for Games with Gold, and we’re excited to continue bringing you great games every month as part of our ongoing commitment to providing great value on Xbox 360.

Don’t forget to download “Halo 3,” called “nothing short of epic” by IGN.com and available Oct. 16-31. Stay tuned to Xbox Wire and Major Nelson’s blog for new Games with Gold titles announced each month.

No word if the program is going to continue on Xbox One. Sony have said their competing product WILL continue on the PS4 though, which does offer up newer and some would say “better” games than the Games with Gold program.

The month of Valve is over, and all of those features announced with the Steam OS are but a distant memory. All except one, that is. The Steam Library Family Sharing just hit its public Beta, and some of us here at Geekscape got our hands on it just a bit early. Here are our initial thoughts.

The Steam Family Sharing program was announced back in September to much acclaim and fanfare. It allows user to authorize another computer and let someone have access to their Steam Library. Simple as that. But how does it work in practice?

I was invited to the Press Beta Test a few weeks back, and I was very excited to give the service a try. I had just built a pretty powerful gaming PC for my Dad and he was itching for some new games. Signing up was simple enough, I just went into my Steam settings on my account and opted into the Beta, and restarted. Then I was stuck.

Screen Shot 2013-10-16 at 9.30.06 AM

There was no new interface added to my Steam, so then started the long and arduous process of hunting through every single menu looking for Family Share. I crawled through the settings and found only an option to view authorized accounts and computers, but no way to ADD anyone. The original press release said that users could request access to the library of someone else, so I figured the borrower had to ask the lendee. So I walked over to my Dad’s PC and started the long and arduous process of finding the request for authorization option.

Is it found by right clicking on your friends list? Nope. Is it found on the lendee’s profile page? No. Is it found on the store page for a particular game you want to borrow? No. There IS no option to request authorization. There IS no option to GRANT authorization, and here lies my biggest gripe with the service. The vague stipulations attached to actually getting the program to work.

When the product was first announced, the general consensus was that any user could be authorized (up to 10) and then have access to your games. If you wanted to play a game and they were using it, they would be given  “A few minutes to finish up or buy the game for themselves.”.  That sounds like if your Dad in another room (or state/country/planet) is playing your Bioshock and you want a crack at it then he’d be kicked off. That’s not how it works.

RequestingAccess

Wanna know how it works? The lendee (owner of the games) has to log into their account on the borrowers machine, then log out. Then the borrower logs in and can see a separate list of games from the lendee’s library. There is NO option to remotely authorize an account or computer. If you want to lend your games to a family member or friend that you do not have physical access to you are out of luck. The only way around this would be desktop sharing.

So far the remote authorization is the only complaint I have with the service, and from just lurking the Family Sharing support forums it seems everyone else shares my opinion. The service works great and every game that my Dad tried fired up no issue.

We are going to continue testing Steam Family Sharing and see if we run into any glaring issues. Valve has said they are going to be adding more features when Steam OS and Steam Machines beta is launched. Hopefully they will add in remote authorization.

So last month was the month of Valve and Steam. They had a series of announcements showcasing their move into the living room (Check them out: Day 1 , Day 2 and Day 3). On the third day they announced their take on the console controller. We saw some pictures and some mock ups but today we can see the device in action!

After seeing this I feel a lot better about the product. The thought of two trackpads worried me, and anyone who’s tried to play a shooter on a laptop.

We will be sure to keep you updated as more info on the controller comes out, and hopefully we can get our hands on one of the beta models!

We are HUGE fans of My Little Pony here at Geekscape. Personally myself probably the biggest on the site. I dressed up as Rarity (the male version) at Comic Con this year. Seriously.

Outside the Geek world, people don’t seem to know about or understand the male fans of the show. Bronies are an odd, out of place WTF worthy group of fans that seem to get a bad wrap.  Well if you’re not up to speed or want to share in the excitement with your friends check out this trailer for the upcoming TV debut of the Kickstarter sensation Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony.

From the Press Release:

Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony sheds light on the unconventional adult fandom of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.  The documentary features John de Lancie and follows several Bronies as they grapple with their misunderstood love for My Little Pony while preparing for the annual convention, BronyCon. This insight into the world of super fandom brings new meaning to masculinity and bravery …  with the help of cartoon horses. Watch when Logo TV’s WHAT!? Documentaries presents Bronies on Monday, October 14 at 10/9c!

This looks pretty damn interesting.  As a fan of the show I get my fair share of ball busting, but haven’t run into stuff like getting my car smashed! I am excited to see what a nice 1st person perspective.

So if you didn’t get to see it when during the Kickstarter then you’re in luck! Be sure to check out Logo TV October 14th!

Don’t know if you have Logo TV? They have a nice handy Channel guide right here! If I get it in podunk Alaska, then you should too!

Pokemon. Not much needs to be said about this legendary franchise. The show, the games and the TOYS don’t need much introduction, but here is one anyway!

Pokemon Origins is the retelling of the first Pokemon games, Red and Blue on the Gameboy. The story follows the titular protagonist “Red” as he battles through the Kanto region on his way to become a Pokemon master! Check out the newest trailer below!

You can catch Pokemon: Origins on November 15th on Pokemon TV and the Pokemon TV APP on your mobile!

Today is the final day in the series of announcements from Valve and this one is a doozy. They are officially announcing their own gamepad! Looks like my prediction from Wednesday was right! Get eyes on this baby!

Steam Controller
Dual trackpads, touch screen and customizable layout!

The Steam Controller really looks like it is the proper next step in video game input. No waggle controls, heart beat sensors or facial recognition. Valve has taken the greatest gaming controller, the Mouse and Keyboard and condensed them into a controller. The Steam Controller will work with all games on the Steam library, even the old ones!

The first thing you will notice about this gamepad is the dual trackpads. Each trackpad is super high resolution like that of a mouse, is clickable and opens up categories of games that were once unable to be played with a traditional gamepad. From the Press Release:

Whole genres of games that were previously only playable with a keyboard and mouse are now accessible from the sofa. RTS games. Casual, cursor-driven games. Strategy games. 4x space exploration games. A huge variety of indie games. Simulation titles. And of course, Euro Truck Simulator 2.

The Steam Controller will also feature brand new Haptic feedback. Featuring “dual linear resonant actuators”, they are saying that they will be able to deliver the kind of resistance that is missing from modern controllers and even might be able to improve on the Mouse and Keyboard!

Next we have the Touchscreen. High resolution, back lit touch screen is also one giant button that is clickable. It can be used to bring up menus, rotary options (Think weapon wheels) and even run entire in-game functions. One great feature of the touchscreen is the game integration. You won’t be forced to separate your attention between two screens. When you tap the touch screen it will overlay what it is displaying on the main screen!

Steam Controller Portal 2 Bindings
The Steam Controller will also appear as a standard Mouse and Keyboard so that you will be able to use it on OLDER games.

The best part? Is that this controller is totally open! Valve plans on releasing tools for consumers to edit the controller to their personal taste!

Personal thoughts? I didn’t really think I was going to be THIS excited for a controller, I was hoping for some #3 games (Hal-Life, Portal L4D). After reading over the entire release I honestly think Valve is making the proper next step in input. Being able to properly replicate the preciseness of a Mouse has been a goal of controller designers for YEARS. The best manufacturers were able to come up with were adapters that you plugged your mouse and keyboard in and up to your console, and even those were pretty sketchy. It’s hard to say how WELL they’ve done with this controller until we can get one in our hands, one which will be included in the hardware beta, but just from looking on their proof of concept I’d be surprised if this came out badly.

Feeling lost? Check out our Day 1 and Day 2 coverage of the year of Valve announcements!

Steam Announcements Unicorn

Sometimes it takes the right voice, the right pacing and the right mood to convey a message. Sometimes it just takes Sean Bean.

The surge of simulations games doesn’t seem to be slowing down, and the newest iteration of the crazy popular Train Simulator series is out now! The team over at RailSimulator have just put out this launch trailer and I say it is epic. Bonus points for the inclusion of the Alaska Railway!

http://youtu.be/C12aycIepqA

They seem to really be wanting to put some emotion into this game. They must have taken a cue from Forza 4.

You can get your hands on Train Simulator 2014 RIGHT NOW on Steam.

This is the week of Steam! With the announcement of Valves dedicated OS on Monday, gamers and journalists alike started speculating right away what the next two would be. Well speculate no further! Valve has officially announced dedicated hardware, lets take a look at Steam Machines!

Valve is finally getting into the home “console” market. They are going to be partnering with hardware manufacturers (who those are have yet to be released) to create dedicated Steam Machines that will run Steam OS. There will be multiple devices available come 2014, but they have created a Beta device as a proof of concept. No pictures of the Beta, but they have listed instructions so that you could be one out of 300 people lucky enough to test the hardware. Instructions are as followed:

THE HARDWARE BETA ELIGIBILITY QUEST:
Before October 25, log in to Steam and then visit your quest page to track your current status towards beta test eligibility
3. Make 10 Steam friends (if you haven’t already)
4. Create a public Steam Community profile (if you haven’t already)
5. Play a game using a gamepad in Big Picture mode

No pictures of the Steam Machine has been released yet, but Valve is saying that it will be open and upgradeable (want to tear it apart and put a different OS on it? Sure go ahead!), and that there will be several options to choose from. They also state that this will NOT interfere with their PC market and you will not be forced to purchase additional hardware to continue using Steam.

This is a HUGE step in the direction for Valve. They’ve been a huge thorn in the side of home consoles for almost a decade now, and with Gabe Newells public disdain for companies like Microsoft, it’s obvious he wants to create a truly open platform.

Thoughts? Well, I am of course excited being a Steam/Valve fanboy, but at the same time I have to step back and look at this objectively. The concept of open gaming, much like Communism, sounds great on paper but in practice is hasn’t done so well. The Ouya is a perfect example of the “Open Gaming” platform and that hasn’t done to well. I believe Valve has the foresight to not fall into the same hole that Ouya did. A Steam Machine will of course lock you into Valves ecosystem, so those giant AAA titles like Battlefield and Need For Speed will still require you to saunter into the computer room and fire up Origin.

As more information is released we will be sure to keep you updated. Be sure to come back FRIDAY for the final bit of news from the company. What do you think it will be? Lets hope Half-Life 3, but with our luck it will be Ricochet 2.

Steam Hardware Announcement

UPDATE:

After some exploration I found THIS patent from valve. It depicts a controller/gamepad with user swappable components.  It looks a LOT like the third picture, don’t you agree?

Valve Controller Patent

Still we can only speculate as to what will be presented Friday, but this looks like a pretty serious contender.

With next gen home consoles being released just around the corner, a lot of gamers have been wondering what’s next for PC gaming? Well look no further, for the collective geniuses at Valve have done it again. Check out Steam OS!

Steam OS is a 100% free Linux based operating system that is designed around the Steam digital distribution system. It’s goal is to bring the Steam PC gaming experience into the living room on your big screen TV. Valve says that they have achieved a new level of graphical processing performance, and they are well on their way to better audio and input performance as well. They state game developers and hardware manufacturers are making new products with Steam OS in mind.

Steam OS Livingroom
Bring a Steam Machine into your living room!

Four new features (well three new ones and one old one) that Valve is bringing to the table are: In-home game streaming, Streaming media services (Think Netflix, Hulu, ETC.), Family Sharing and Parental Controls. These are all bullet points you can find on any home console right now, having them on the Steam OS is a huge step in the right direction.

I expect to see hardware partnerships in the near future, specialized console sized PC’s from hardware manufacturers like Asus, Lenovo, HP and Dell. I’ve always said that the moment Gaming on a Linux based machine was on the level as a Windows machine (No need to run virtualization, emulation or shoddy drivers) I would make the switch. My big concern with the Steam OS is the In-home streaming. This makes me believe that not all games will work on the Steam OS and you will still need a second PC, and if at the end of the day that is the case I don’t see the need to switch right away.

There are still TWO more announcements coming this week, so be sure to check back Wednesday and Friday to see what Valve has planned next!

Steam OS Announcement
Speculation is the second announcement is specialized hardware and the third is a new series of games.

The next in the series of incredibly realistic military simulation games, Arma III has launched and we get this inspirational new trailer. Get eyes on it below.

I’d like to warn anyone who plans on getting into this game. It is SEVERELY realistic and a hyper simulator. There are even special motion tracking headphones you can get that will map your head to the players in game head.

You can pick it up on Steam or at your local retailer. For more info on the game check out their official website HERE.

Looks like good ideas stay in Washington. Taking a move out of Microsoft’s play book, it looks like the guys at Valve are incorporating a new feature from the Xbox One. Lets take a look at the new Steam Family Sharing.

Steam is the biggest and most widely used Digital Distribution platform there is. One of the biggest gripes users had was, if a game was bought on one account (say on a family computer) you couldn’t play or access saves from the other game. OR if you logged in you were forced to play on the other account. Now with Steam Family Sharing you don’t have to fuss with that.

Steam Family Share Request Access
What the request process will look like.

The process is fairly painless. You authorize an account and then they request access to a specific game and BAM! You can play it on your own account and own computer. If the user is playing the game and you want to hop on, they will be prompted to either buy the game or have a few minutes to finish up/save their progress. Access is limited up to 10 users and not all games will work. Games that require a third party key or subscription (Think Star Trek Online or other MMO’s) cannot be shared.

For the full press release and expanded be sure to check out the official page HERE. Once there you can follow the directions to sign up for the beta and request access.

It’s a tale as old as Mortal Kombat. The parents, the congressman, and the media have always blamed things they do not understand for the problems in society. Elvis and his sexy hips, The Beatles and their haircuts, flower children and their peace signs, Motown and their dance grooves, NWA and their lyrics, Marylin Manson and his image, and of course, Grand Theft Auto and its violence (and the list goes on and on). I am going to talk about a couple of recent incidents of the media blaming video games and how we as geeks can help correct the message.

Recently, an 8 Year old child in Louisiana allegedly shot and killed his grandmother after playing Grand Theft Auto 4. Allegedly. All the reporting that has come out of the Sheriff’s Office is that the child played GTA 4 and then shot his grandmother. What is fuzzy here, are the kid’s motives. Did he just finish a 6 star style rampage or did he just finish a trip to the bowling alley with Roman? What is disgusting is the fact of HOW the incident is being reported. CNN described GTA 4 as a game that gives you points for killing the most innocent civilians. This is what the Middle American Mother is going to hear. That GTA gives you ” Points” for killing people on their way to work. CNN is completely out of it to think that we are still in the arcade era, where a player would drop some quarters on Centipede and try to get his initials on the leader board. Statements like that boggle my mind so much that I think the news media (CNN, Fox News and MSNBC) are purposely saying these things to dissuade or scare people.

Seriously.. there is a letter on the box for a reason!
Seriously.. there is a letter on the box for a reason!

Recent incidents of violence have always blamed some sort of video game as the catalyst. The Sandy Hook shooting was blamed on Adam Lanza’s love for “Violent Videogames“, and that officials found a large library of games they deemed violent.

When Anders Breivik’s manifesto was released, the news reported that he played countless hours of World of Warcraft and that it was a training tool used to help him on his rampage.

The VTECH shooting was blamed on Counter Strike.

Columbine was blamed on Doom and Metal Gear Solid.

Why are these associations okay? Why is it normal for us as a society to automatically try to push the blame onto a third party? You wouldn’t blame the ATM if your kid stole your card and PIN would you? You wouldn’t blame the modem if your kid downloaded a bunch of Brazzers’ videos would you? You wouldn’t blame your refrigerator for getting you fat, would you? These associations are ridiculous and absurd, so why shouldn’t the thought that a video game caused an 8 year old boy to shoot his grandma be just as crazy?

They're playing Spider-Man, right?
They’re playing Spider-Man, right?

Let’s take GTA out of the conversation for a minute. Let us just assume that the kid was taking a nap then capped his gram gram. Why the HELL did this tiny child have access to a god damned pistol?! Where the heck is Eddie Eagle when you need him? Why was the child completely ignored? The subject of scrutiny from CNN should be the parents. If their kid grabbed an Airsoft Rifle and shot out their neighbor’s truck windows, they are responsible. They are the ones who ignored all sensible gun safety rules and regulations and let an almost toddler gear up with a .38. They are also the ones who went out and bought an M rated video game and gave it to him.

I’ll play devils advocate for a moment and say that yeah, GTA was the reason the kid shot his grandmother (it wasn’t). A small, 8 year old, mentally undeveloped child was given a game that the ESRB deemed too advanced for him. Hell, would you give an 8 year old a copy of Heavy Metal? Hellraiser? Event Horizon? HELL NO! All those films would fuck up a small mind severely. So giving a child a game who’s title is a FELONY seems like a severe lack of proper parenting. Video games are more and more prevalent in our society. Video games as an industry are bigger than films, and they need to be treated as such. If you think that your (older) child is capable of handling adult themes and you are OK with them watching R-rated films, then as a parent you can have the right to let them play M rated games:

Here’s the freaking ratings chart. Read, memorize, understand, and listen to it:

esrb
Here is the ESRB ratings explained. These outline what kind of content you can expect to see with the different letters. Keep in mind, GTA is rated M, THE SECOND HARSHEST RATING.

So what can YOU do to help? If you are a parent with a child who is interested in video games, talk to them about what is and isn’t appropriate for kids their age. Have a discussion about what is real and isn’t real. Set the fucking parental controls on their Xbox and Playstation so if their neighbor trades them a copy of OneChanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers it won’t play on their damned console.

If you are a video game enthusiast, propagate the formula of video game education. Talk to family about the proper target market for games like Grand Theft Auto. Explain the ESRB system. Join advocacy groups like the Video Game Voters Network, be active in the process of educating the public at large. Only YOU can prevent ignorance (and forest fires).

Grand Theft Auto V releases in just a few weeks. It’s set to be an incredible, artful experience that took a huge team of talented people years to create. It’s not for kids, so don’t buy it for them.

Just tweeted a few hours ago on the official Gearbox twitter was a little bit of info about a soon to be released short film.

From glancing at the image I recognize Tiny Tina right away, could this be another trailer for an upcoming DLC? The last expansion for Borderlands 2 has yet to be released and some speculate that it may actually take place on the Hyperion Space Station. There isn’t anything more tangible than this little info we got. You can be sure that the moment this new short film is released we will let you know.

Is it October yet? With just two months between us and the release of Battlefield 4, the crew over at DICE are keeping the teases coming. In the most recent developer video, Aleksander Grondal walks us through a huge feature of the BF4 multiplayer experience. Levolution, sounds stupid, looks incredible.

The want factor just flew off the charts. I hope that these features of map changing moments aren’t just some scripted gimmicks.

You can get your copy of Battlefield 4 on October 29th on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

The hugely popular and crazy fun FPS, Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, is about to get a little bit bigger. The guys over at Torn Banner Studios have teamed up with Spike TV in order to give you a brand new expansion pack. Subtitled “Deadliest Warrior” (Based off the hit TV show of the same name) it promises to pit more than just Knights and Archers against each other. Take a look at the trailer with me!

If at this point you are asking yourself “Dafuq is Chivalry?” then let me bring you up to speed. Released October of last year from Torn Banner Studios, Chivalry is an online team battle game set in the Middle Ages. Think Counter Strike with swords and bows. Players pick one of two teams, a variety of classes to play and a myriad of weapons to wield. Game types range from all out brawl arena battles to rush objectives like storming a castle and killing the King. What really makes Chivalry stand out is the combat and physics system. You have a few different attack types at your disposal, and one on one battles turn into tests of skill over tests of button mashing and luck. Once you land a nice hit with your weapon, you are given a chance to see some very advanced gibbing. Body parts fly off with trails of blood and sinew behind them. It truly is a sight to behold.

The only other bit of news that was released with this trailer is that there is no other news. Torn Banner have said that they will send out a full Press Release on Monday. So sit right there and we will be sure to keep you updated.

Have you ever wanted to rule the world? Have you ever wanted to become the next great dictator? Well Tropico 5 has you covered. The Tropico series has been kind of a hidden gem of the simulation genre. Recent installments have had players ruling their own little Banana Republics while you manage international ties with Communist and Capitalist nations. Well Tropico 5 stands to take the series into a whole new direction, CONQUERING THE WORLD! Watch the trailer below. ( HINT: It is an homage to the Charlie Chaplin film The Great Dictator)

The biggest addition to the game is the Era and Online modes.  Taking players from early 19th century all the way to modern times. Can you survive both World Wars AND the Cold War? You can enlist the help of friends with the full Cooperative mode, sharing resources and tactics. This game is basically a Cuba simulator at heart. Check out the Press Release for the full details.

Packed with a whole host of new gameplay features and all new artwork designed from scratch, Tropico 5 takes the series into a new and exciting direction – dynasties!

You, as El Presidente, will first take control of the infamous island of Tropico during early colonial times and then guide it through the centuries as the world changes and moves ever forward. You must tackle the changing needs of your people, as well as opposing governments and factions, and thus lay the foundations for your own dynasty. As you move through your years in office you can promote members of your extended family on the island to positions of power: such as ambassador, commanding general or even Supreme Ruler, to ensure your legacy thrives through the eras. As your influence and wealth grows, so do the threats to your burgeoning island superpower. Can you survive both World Wars, prosper through the Great Depression, rule as an iron-fisted dictator through the Cold War and advance your country to modern times and beyond? From the 19th to the 21st century, each era carries its own challenges and opportunities.

As well as a wealth of other new features, including advanced trading mechanics, technology, scientific research trees and island exploration, Tropico 5 will add cooperative and competitive multiplayer for up to four players for the first time in the series’ history! Viva El Presidente!

Features of Tropico 5

All new art – All artwork is reworked to provide Tropico 5 with a distinct historic visual identity. Choose from over 100 unique buildings from each of the individual eras.

Cooperative and competitive multiplayer – Up to four players can build up their own cities and economies on any given island map. Players can share resources and citizens, or declare war on each other.

No exact release date has been announced, just an ambiguous 2014. It will be playable at Gamescom and be available on the PC (Windows, Mac AND Linux) as well as the Xbox 360.

Polish game Dev CD Projekt Red appears to have knocked it out of the park AGAIN! The third in the series for their next level open world RPG, The Witcher, has just has just blown the gaming community’s’ collective mind. The CG in the cinematic is absolutely astounding. Please pump up it up to 1080P and let it buffer.

From the release:

CD Projekt RED is proud to present The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt “Killing Monsters” cinematic trailer to the public for the first time, offering a thrilling glimpse into the morally ambiguous universe of Geralt of Rivia.

“Killing Monsters” portrays the cruel and gritty world of The Witcher and foreshadows the mature mood of the upcoming story-driven RPG, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, set for release on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2014.

The next iteration of the CoD franchise, CoD: Ghosts, is just a few months from release. The developers certainly are making a big deal out of this one. The game features real time lighting and advanced fish AI. We all know that the main draw of the game is the online multiplayer, and the guys over at Activision have just released this fancy new trailer.

Now, admittedly I went into this trailer thinking it was going to be the same old shit. But after watching I was pleasantly surprised. It looks like the team over at Infinity Ward is really trying to make the proper next step for their game. The new game modes look really fun, and the Battlefield style destruction should add a new variable to the hectic run and gun. But we all know what the best part of this trailer is, you get to play as a GIRL!

GoD: Ghosts ships out November 5th on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U and PC.

Hallelujah! Hallelujah! The clouds have parted and a great light began to shine down. What was once a terrible console plagued with DRM and an Electronic Eye constantly peering into your living room, has quickly changed.

In a recent interview with IGN, Xbox Corporate Vice President Marc Whitten said that the console will still function with the Kinect sensor unplugged. Though players will miss out on a bunch of the features like voice recognition and player recognition, you will still be able to access your games and entertainment.

This announcement is a couple months after they rescinded their decision for an always on console, as well as revised their used game stance. It looks like the gamers have spoken, and Microsoft answered.

The Xbox One is slated to be released sometime this November.

So at the end of my Ubisoft Press Party article I mentioned seeing a certain AC 4 actor walking around the ship, doing awesome assassin things, including an awesome  hidden blade kill. Well, film maker Devin Super Tramp has released the amazing film he shot in just FOUR days at Comic Con. Check it out below!

That was so mind bogglingly amazing. Actor Chris Romwell did an amazing job of portraying Edward Kenway in the real world. Be sure to check out the behind the scenes making of from this short film to see how much actually went into this! Keep and eye out for a certain Geekscape writer walking up the stairs of the ship!

You read that title right. There is currently a petition over at Change.org to get Nintendo of America President, Reggie Fils-Amie, into the next installment of Super Smash Bros.

The Nintendo of America President was shot into video game fame. His wacky catch phrases and ability to not take himself TOO Seriously, has grounded him a large fan base all over the world. Way back at E3 2007 Reggie was brought on stage to do a “Body Check” for Wii Fit and that is when he uttered the most famous of his catch phrases. ” My Body Is Ready”.

In a recent interview on the Jimmy Fallon Show, Reggie was asked by a fan if he would be included in the upcoming Smash Bros Game. He responded simply, but firmly.

You have to ask that to Mr. Sakurai. He’s the producer of the game, it’s his game. But if he wants, my body is ready.

I’ve signed it, so why haven’t you?
