“You’re invited to the most disturbing dinner party of the year. Based on a shocking true story, two men meet online and make a unique arrangement: one will kill, cook, and eat the other. Taste imagines their first and only meeting, told in real time, in a working kitchen”.

Taste5

I attended a performance of Taste knowing only as much as the statement above alludes to and I had a wickedly good time! If you are a fan of horror/the macabre or excellent theater, then you need to see Taste!

The story unfolds in real time over 90 minutes (no intermission). It starts off with fastidious Terry (played by Donal Thomas-Cappello) cooking and prepping his upscale city apartment for his guest. I loved that he actually cooked and the smell of onions added an extra dimension to the experience. Soon, nervous and awkward Vic (played by Chris L. McKenna) arrives and things are off to a rocky start. Vic does not care for the food Terry has been working on but both want to make this an evening they won’t forget.

The set is exceptional and looks like it could be a set from a TV show. There is even a working faucet and stove! It felt like a real space that two actors inhabited and the staging worked out perfectly to show you just enough during the gory segments. There is one off stage room, the bathroom, but the actors are mostly on stage the whole time.

The acting was superb! Both gentlemen responded to each other and worked off each other’s energy. You could see the intimacy and the whole time you have a sense of voyeurism as you watch they two people try and connect. They are both so committed the whole time that you cannot look away, well, at least not until the cringe worthy parts.

Taste1

Just to give you a fair warning, this play is not for the squeamish. If you don’t mind gore or can at least stomach it, you will be fine. It is amazing that even though you know it is fake, everyone in the audience with me still cringed/groaned/gasped together. The special effects  are provided by Tony Doublin and the special makeup effects are by Gabe Bartalos. Combined with the staging, the effects make you believe the horror that is happening on stage.

Stuart Gordon directed and has brought out the best performance from his two actors. He is also known for directing Re-Animator and Re-Animator The Musical. Yes, there is blood, but not quite as much as the “splash zones” of Re-Animator The Musical. Taste was written by Benjamin Brand whose script is full of engaging dialogue. The conversations between Thomas-Capello and McKenna sound like everyday conversations, except for the whole cannibalism part (hopefully).

Taste is surprisingly funny. Most of the night is like an awkward date and the jokes that arise from those situations are fairly relatable. Even during one of the most shocking/bloody segments, there is still humor. If you want to see some intense theater, enjoy horror, and are able to laugh at gore, or if are just looking for something a little different, then you should go see Taste!

Briefly: Outlast is awesome… at least for the short, short period of time that I’ve been able to play the game.

See, right from the opening moment, the gorgeous independent title is absolutely terrifying. I just can’t bring myself to play the game for very long at all.

I better get on it, as next week the Outlast: Whistleblower DLC launches for PC and PS4. It’ll cost a cool $8.99, and judging from the just-released first trailer, it’ll be just as terrifying as the base game.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know if you’ll be picking this one up.

Whistleblower will let you play as Waylon Park, a software engineer under contract with Murkoff and the man who emailed journalists around the world – including Miles – at the beginning of Outlast. Spending a couple of weeks at Mount Massive, during which he was unable to even talk to his wife and son thanks to strict security protocols, Waylon developed a deep-seated distrust of the profit-motivated scientists and doctors leading dangerous and irresponsible experiments on their patients. Identifying with those poor souls fueled Waylon’s anger, and set the stage for his unmasking of Mount Massive’s rotten core.

Although Whistleblower tells the story that led to Outlast, it will actually stretch past the events of the first game to show the final chapter in Mount Massive Asylum’s story.

I remember hearing about Another from my anime friends a couple of years ago. I had also seen some of the art and was told it was a weird show. Well, to say anime is weird, is redundant because almost all anime is strange in some way and that’s why we love it! I started Another planning to watch just the first few episodes but I just had to know what happened next and ended up watching all 12 episodes.

another8

The series starts off with Koichi Sakikabara, a ninth grade boy who is soon to be released from the hospital. He had a lung collapse and is now staying in the rural town of Yomiyama with his maternal grandparents and aunt. His mother died shortly after he was born and his father is away on business. Cue the creepiness! While at the hospital, Koichi meets a mysterious young girl who is on her way to the basement to give her “friend” a doll. He is later surprised to see her at his new school (she is even in the same class as him) but no one else seems to notice her. Is she a ghost? What is wrong with class 3-3? Why won’t any of the students tell Koichi what is going on? More importantly, why are students and some of their family members dying in gruesome accidents?

anotherbanner

The show starts off as a ghost story then it turns into more of a thriller. Turn off the lights for this one and enjoy the spooky visuals, the moody music and the heart racing series of events. I really enjoyed the Final Destination movies and I think 1000 Ways to Die is fascinating, and the deaths on this show fall into the same category. They are crazy accidents and, after you have witnessed a couple, any dangerous situation makes you nervous. There is a lot of blood but deaths are over rather quickly, until the final climax of the series.

another5

The muted color palette fits the emotionally drained students. Artistically, everyone is drawn in a cute/youthful way which contrasts nicely with the somber environment. Towards the end of the show, when some of the extreme violence occurs, many characters are drawn in an over-exaggerated way which fits perfectly with how crazy they have become.

 another4

The horror aspect of the show peaked my interest and the mystery made me watch episodes back to back. The show explains many things, but not enough to answer all of your questions. Also, the last bit of the show is an extremely different vibe though it still has that hair raising suspense. The less you know about this show before you watch it the better. It puts you on the same level as Koichi and you learn the information as he does. This is what happened for me and I feel it improved my viewing of this show. If you want to watch something creepy with an intriguing mystery, you will want to check out Another!

Briefly: It won’t premiere on television for another two weeks, but Showtime has just debuted the entire first episode of their anticipated series Penny Dreadful for free online.

The link, of course, is US only, so international readers will need a VPN to view the episode.

In the series, some of literature’s most famously terrifying characters – including Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and iconic figures from the novel Dracula – have become embroiled in Victorian London. The series is a frightening psychosexual thriller created, written and executive produced by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan (Hugo, The Aviator, Gladiator) and executive produced by Logan’s Desert Wolf Productions, along with Oscar winner Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall) and Pippa Harris (Revolutionary Road), both of Neal Street.

Take a look at the episode below (unless you want to wait until May 11th), and let us know what you think!

Briefly: You know that we live in the future when you see a trailer like this. It’s 2014, and here’s the first preview for a campy-as-hell, hilarious looking movie called WolfCop, which is about an alcoholic police officer… that’s also a werewolf.

The film had a huge presence at last weekend’s Fan Expo Vancouver (which you’ll see more coverage on soon), and though I hadn’t heard of it before then, I’m pretty excited for it. The film hits select Cineplex theatres in Canada on June 6th, and the rest of the world will have to wait until September.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think!

It’s not unusual for alcoholic cop Lou Garou to black out and wake up in unfamiliar surroundings, but lately things have taken a strange turn. Crime scenes seem oddly familiar. Lou’s senses are heightened, and when the full moon is out, he’s a rage-fueled werewolf. WOLFCOP is one cop’s quest to become a better man…one transformation at a time.

Briefly: It may look like an homage to The Descent / Catacombs, but Legendary’s As Above, So Below trailer is also pretty creepy.

In the found-footage horror, miles of twisting catacombs lie beneath the streets of Paris, the eternal home to countless souls. When a team of explorers ventures into the uncharted maze of bones, they uncover the dark secret that lies within this city of the dead. A journey into madness and terror, “As Above, So Below” reaches deep into the human psyche to reveal the personal demons that come back to haunt us all.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think. As Above, So Below hits theatres on August 15th.

Two strangers forced into interaction at the airport never leads to anything pleasant. Meet Me There, the self described ‘art house horror film’ from director Lex Lybrand and writers Brandon Stroud and Destiny Talley, kicks off with the discomfort and anxiety dials set high, and gradually cranks them to 11 until the closing credits.

Ada, played by newcomer Lisa Friedich, suffers from a number of sexual dysfunctions, which her therapist suggests may stem from a blocked childhood trauma. Her boyfriend Calvin (Michael Foulk) offers to take her back to her hometown to look for answers.

The premise is a simple and uncomfortably honest one. The resolution is not so simple- it is, after all, a horror movie- as Ada and Calvin search for the truth in a small town drowning in religion.

Meet Me There thrives by knowing exactly what it is: a tension piece more concerned with tone then plot. In the chaos that follows Ada’s return home, we’re treated to escalating insanity but very few answers as to what or why. It’s actually a refreshing approach, as if writers Stroud and Talley heard audiences collectively saying ‘don’t show us the monster!’ at screenings of countless other horror films, took pity, and tossed us in the deep end. Once the credits rolled, I had more questions than answers, which only added to the disturbing aura of the rural Oklahoma town that the movie explores.

1

The highlights of the film are easily Friedich’s Ada, and Dustin Runnels’ sinister performance of Preacher Woodward. Runnels’ portrayal of the small town preacher gives a dark cloud of tragedy, adding a lot of weight to what could be a one note ‘creepy Jesus guy’ character, and it’s obvious that once Runnels retires from his day job of being professional wrestling legend Goldust, he’s got plenty of options.

Lisa Friedich is a stand out new addition to the pantheon of young scream queens: a raw and understated hipster Ellen Ripley that commands the camera.

10255593_10203043236137693_1970748511_n

The movie isn’t without its flaws. There are some pacing issues with scenes that don’t push the action forward. Boyfriend Calvin doesn’t have a lot to do beyond remind us that things are ‘pretty messed up,’ which the story does a good job of not letting us forget on its own. Meet Me There could have easily been a solo adventure for it’s heroine.

Lybrand has a tendency to keep the camera tight and close, which is often helpful in communicating the idea of the world closing in on Ada, but as a result, he limits the tools in his story telling kit by not allowing the camera to open up the world for the audience. For instance, at one point in the third act, our heroes on the run stumble across something in the woods, react in fear and disgust, but we the audience don’t get a solid idea as to what it is they’re reacting to, or where it is in the physical world of the film.

Regardless, Lybrand is a natural with mood and tone, and the screenwriting team isn’t afraid of exploring high stakes personal territory. Horror movies aren’t much without their subtext, and the relationship between abuse and religious suppression is a bold direction to take for a bold debut that’s worth seeking out. Combined with Friedich’s natural charisma, the sky is obviously the limit for how far the four horsemen behind Meet Me There can evolve and grow for future projects.

Briefly: Since the Wii U’s announcement, fans of Koei Tecmo’s Fatal Frame series have been very vocal in their wishes for the series to appear on the console… now it appears that they may just get that wish.

Famitsu is reporting that Nintendo and Koei Tecmo are developing the next iteration of the beloved series.

No title, release date, or other information was given, but the article also notes a planned expansion of the series into film and comic books.

It’s been years since I’ve played the series, but I have to say that I’d be absolutely terrified to hold up the Wii U’s gamepad as the Camera Obscura. How about you?

Briefly: NBC announced just last week that their Rosemary’s Baby reboot/miniseries would be premiering on May 11th, and the network has now debuted the project’s first trailer.

The two-part miniseries is an adaptation of Ira Levin’s 1967 novel, which was first adapted just one year later in 1968. I’m not overly familiar with the source material (both the book and the film), but I’m definitely a fan of the stellar cast that NBC has put together here, including Suits star Patrick J. Adams, Star Trek‘s Zoe Saldana, Christina Cole, Jason Isaacs, and more.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know of you’ll be watching. The first half of Rosemary’s Baby will debut on May 11th, while the second half will air on May 15th.

http://youtu.be/-r5Pl7RrjHA

This new adaptation of “Rosemary’s Baby” centers on a young married couple who escapes New York and moves to Paris with hopes of leaving their sad past behind. After a series of unfortunate events, Rosemary and Guy Woodhouse are presented with an offer they can’t refuse — an apartment at the most prestigious address in the city. Problem is, it comes with a haunted past and an immeasurable price …

Briefly: WGN America (who is also developing a series based on Vertigo’s Scalped comic) has just debuted a full trailer for their upcoming horror/drama series Salem.

Set in the volatile world of 17th century Massachusetts, SALEM explores what really fueled the town’s infamous witch trials and dares to uncover the dark, supernatural truth hiding behind the veil of this infamous period in American history. In SALEM, witches are real, but they are not who or what they seem. The show, which centers on an epic romance wrapped around this explosive revelation, delivers a bold new vision of Salem — and an even bolder new vision of witches.

It certainly sounds intriguing, and it’s a series that I’d never heard of until today. You can take a look at the trailer below, and let us know if you’ll be tuning in when the show premieres this Sunday.

This is a very cool project, and is most definitely a film that I’d love to see completed.

Nightmare Code utilizes surveillance cameras, PC cam, video call capture and eyeglasscam to tell the story of a troubled software start-up that is creating an advanced form of behavior recognition software capable of reading the thoughts and feelings of people on camera regardless of what they’re actually saying.

The team behind the project has been working on the film for more than two years, and they’re getting close to the finish line, but they need our help if they’re going to cross it. The film features a ton of talent that have worked on a multitude of other projects, including The Walking Dead, Castle, CSI, Nip/Tuck, X-Men: The Last Stand, Parenthood, Mad Men, The FP, True Blood, and plenty more, so there are some absolutely fantastic people involved here.

The team is looking for $30,000 to finish the film, and with two weeks left they’re sitting at 52% of that goal. Here’s the breakdown of where this money is set to be used:

20140225231621-Where_your_money_goes_graphic-01

As always, there are plenty of fantastic backer rewards up for grabs, but Nightmare Code also features a unique one. While lots of crowd funding projects offer backers the opportunity to be in a film, it usually requires the backer to be located in a certain area; because of the unique way that Nightmare Code is filmed and presented, backers can record their segments from anywhere. Pretty cool, huh? Other perks include t-shirts, digital downloads of the film and its soundtrack, signed posters, screening invitations, producer credits, and more!

You can take a look at the campaign video for Nightmare Code below, and head here to back the project!

Briefly: I never thought that I would say (type) these words, but we are now just a few weeks away from the release of Knights of Badassdom.

We saw the first trailer for the film all the way back in 2011, and for some reason… the movienever came out. As far as I’m aware, nobody really knows why it was shelved for so long. Seeing as many of the film’s stars have absolutely exploded in popularity since the movie was shot, there has never been a better time to release it than right now. The film stars Peter Dinklage, Summer Glau, Ryan Kwanten, Steve Zahn, Danny Pudi, and plenty of others.

Last month, Entertainment One released a short new trailer for the film, and today IGN has debuted the film’s latest poster. Take a look at the sweet new image below, and let us know if you’re excited! Knights of Badassdom hits VOD (hopefully not only in the US) on February 11th!

Anyone else feel like they’ve been waiting for this forever?

Ah, Grimm. How we missed you! Welcome back!

Grimm, which premiered on Friday, Oct. 25th—just in time for Halloween—is a great show that not enough people are watching, and if  last night’s episode was any indication, season three could prove to be the best season yet.

The season two finale left our heroes separated; Detective/Grimm Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli) is captured by Baron Samedi and the Captain Renard’s evil half-brother Eric (who is a Prince of the mysterious Royal family) and being whisked away to Europe while Juliette (Bitsie Tulloch), Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) and Rosalee (Bree Turner) are trapped by ‘zombies’ in an container yard.

Just UnDead Enough To Be a Problem

Now, we already know the zombies aren’t your typical undead, rather, they are suffering the effects of a poison spit out by the supernatural Wesen, Baron Samedi, which knocks them out, mimicking death. When they awake, they are in a violent, fugue state which results in death if not treated.

So a crowd of just-zombied-enough-to-be-a-hazard people are attacking our loyal Scooby gang, and Captain Renard (Sasha Roiz) arrives too late to save Nick—so it’s definitely time to call in the cavalry.

Which Juliette does (the ONLY helpful thing she’s done in the past two seasons, seriously) by calling Nick’s partner, Hank (Russell Hornsby—finally off the crutches). Hank has no questions (it is SO NICE that all our main characters are now sharing information) and immediately pulls in Sergeant Wu (Reggie Lee) to wrangle the posse and head out to the container yard.

Meanwhile, in Europe, Gypsy witch and black-market purveyor Stefania Vaduva Popescu (Shohreh Aghdashloo) finishes ripping the still-beating heart out of Frau Pech (Mary McDonald-Lewis) and seals it in a puzzle box of sorts. She calls in Adalind (Claire Coffee), who has grown on us during season two, and was particularly charming in her I-can’t-believe-I’m-doing-this-why-is-magic-so-dirty attitude this episode. Stefania informs Adalind that if Adalind wishes to have her Hexenbiest powers restored, she will cut off Frau Pech’s hands and feet. With a moue of distaste, Adalind kneels down, blade in hand.

Monroe, Rosalee and Juliette's situation going from bad to worse in episode 2.
Monroe, Rosalee and Juliette’s situation going from bad to worse in episode 2.

How’d you get up there? Why Didn’t You Move the Stairs??

Hank and the cavalry arrive just in time to rescue Rosalee, Monroe and Juliette; the police begin rounding up the zombies and placing them in an empty shipping container (amazingly, an empty shipping container was just right next to where all the zombies were. Handy, that); Renard finds the container where Nick was taken, but before he can search for clues is attacked by zombies himself.

He goes partial-Hexenbiest on them, and dispatches three in short order just as a phone rings—Hank, calling Nick’s phone.

Renard meets up with Hank and the rest of the gang, and they compare notes. Juliette pouts about not finding Nick fast enough (really, has she NO skills?) while the police continue rounding up zombies (has the Portland PD never heard of tranq darts???).

Knowing that Eric wants Nick in Vienna—which means a plane—everybody jumps in Nick’s car and heads to the airport while Hank frantically calls the Airport Police. After discovering there is a plane under Baron Samedi’s name (apparently no need for an alias after you’ve just kidnapped a cop and murdered a bunch of people), Hank directs the airport security to approach with caution and to not let any plane take off.

Rosalee brings up the interesting factoid that no one knows how Nick—a Grimm—will react to the Baron’s poison. Since Nick isn’t exactly normal.

Seriously not normal.

Airport Police To The Rescue…Oh, Wait…

Well, of course, the airport police show up (just two of them) and immediately separate, one going inside to ‘search’ and the other staying outside to chat with the Baron. So, of course, he gets zapped with the green poison ooze. His screams bring his partner out—and he, following the police procedure of we-can’t-actually-arrest-the-bad-guy-because-then-the-show-will-be-over, runs right past the Baron to his downed partner, and of course, gets slimed/oozed himself.

The plane takes off just as Hank et al get there. Juliette, per her usual function, stomps her foot and screams no, no, no, and then, showing an AMAZING lack of knowledge of police procedure for a women who lives with a cop, demands Renard stop the place. Then she slaps him, because that’s a how a strong woman goes about saving her man—slapping the people who are helping and demanding that they ‘get him back.’

Juliette is reprieved from being told to grow up, stop being a child, and if she has any helpful solutions she is welcome to bring those up (sorry, that’s our fantasy of what Renard was about to say after she slapped him) by Sergeant Chu calling Hank—the zombies are all rounded up, now what do they do?

Well, Rosalee has a handy-dandy antidote they know works, but they need to make more. Renard will check with the FAA to see if the plane logged a flight plan (which even we know private planes don’t have to do…) and everyone heads back to the car—except for Monroe, who points out the two unconscious cops. Since they can’t be treated yet, the cops get thrown into the back of the car for later (we never see them again, but we assume they got cured and went home and had pot roast for dinner).

I’m Not Dead Yet

Cut to the Baron’s plane, where the Baron is drinking bottled water (??) and gloating over the not-quite-dead Grimm in his metal coffin. Now, audience, Rosalee has already told us that a Grimm might react differently, so we know something is going to happen—and sure enough, the coffin starts to rattle.

Then it starts to shake, as Nick punches the steel into new shapes. The Baron, not worried yet, leans over the coffin, and when Nick forces the lid up, the Baron spits more poisonous goo. Nick slumps, the Baron, chuckling, walks away—and then Nick’s eyes open.

He attacks the Baron, and then a hapless co-pilot, which takes the fight into the cockpit—the plane starts to crash.

Back to Europe, where Adalind has dulled her knife hacking off Frau Pech’s hands. Stefania takes her to a lovely field of poppies and throws the lid of the puzzle box into the air, where it hovers, magically, for a moment, before landing.

Handing Adalind a spade made of a human foot (we think), Stefania bids her dig.

Back to the plane; Baron Samedi tries to regain control of Nick by chanting “Obey me, for I am your master.” Which doesn’t work at all. Nick throws him across the cock pit and the plane goes down in the forests of Oregon.

To the Tea Shop!

Meanwhile, Monroe, Rosalee and Juliette are back at the tea and spice shop, debating what to do. Juliette wants to fly to Vienna and get Nick. Monroe agrees with her—though at least he backs his argument up with a few thoughts (1) he doesn’t trust Renard and (2) they could get all of the Wesen Nick’s helped to assist.

Rosalee frets about how to inject the antidote into the dozens of zombie both in time and without getting hurt; Juliette remembers she’s a vet and probably took a chemistry class or two and comes up with the idea of making it into a gas (it takes them an unbelieving LONG time to get to that conclusion…)

Renard, back at the police station, orders his mole in the Royal family to kill Eric when Eric lands; there is a yes-we-already-knew-that bit of ex positional dialogue between Hank and Renard where the importance of saving Nick is again brought up.

At the crash site, a red-eyed, bloody and clearly not himself Nick pulls himself out of the wreckage and stumbles into the woods, leaving behind a dead Baron and two injured pilots.

Back at the container yard, Chu is having all the fun rounding up one-off zombies and putting them into the container. Monroe, Juliette and Rosalee show up with the treatment—Monroe, showing his innate knowledge of tactics, suggest making noise at the not-the-door-end of the container to distract the zombies so that Juliette and Rosalee can throw the antidote in, leading to the best line of the night (courtesy of Monroe), in response to knowing if the treatment worked: “I don’t know, I think it’s kind of like popcorn. You know it’s done with they stop making noise.”

Grimm Crash Plane. Grimm Smash!

Back at the precinct, Hank gets the plane-crash call; Nick stumbles out of the woods to find a conveniently placed roadhouse filled with a central-casting assortment of tough characters.

Chu opens the container to find a bunch of confused, bruised and frightened—but cured—people, just as Hank calls Monroe. Juliette, continuing her taking-a-stand-on-things-that-don’t-matter, insists Monroe put it on speaker phone. Hank tells them all that the plane has crashed.

Renard and Hank arrive at the crash site first, to find the Baron’s body but no Nick. Seeing the punch marks on the steel coffin, they realize that they may now be not so much rescuing Nick as rescuing other people from Nick. Hank calls the local police to request any 911 calls get copied to him.

Nick, senses inundated by the noise of the bar, attacks the first guy in his way, and then just keeps going. His senses are super-attuned; he can hear people’s heart as they attack from behind him. Terrified customers flee.

Monroe, Juliette and Rosalee show up at the plane crash just as Hank gets a call about a disturbance at a nearby bar—the whole gang heads out.

The bar owner comes out with a gun; Nick easily disarms him but then lets the guy ran away; seeing himself in the mirror, Nick, with a yell, throws the gun and shatters the mirror.

Renard, Hank, etc., pull up to the roadhouse just as the owner stumbles out; Monroe can smell Nick—it’s him, but different. Juliette offers to help (how?) and Rosalee tells him it’s not really Nick.

Seriously, not really Nick.

There’s No Way Their Finishing This In One Episode

They go in and see the damage—no one dead, but a lot hurt. Monroe and Hank head out the back after Nick.

Back to the field of poppies. Adalind finishes digging the hole, then buries the hands, feet and heart in it. Stefania says they will wait, and soon they will know if Adalind has been accepted.

After a moment, a growing circle of dead flowers spreads out from around them, then a green, vaguely skeleton looking form rises from the newly covered hole and is absorbed into Adalind, whose eyes glow green. Stefania tells her she has been accepted—and now she has to collect the dead flowers. Leading to the second best line of the night, Adalind’s snarky, exhausted: “Really?”

Back at the bar, cops pull up as Renard comes out, asking for ambulances, then tells Juliette and Rosalee that Nick has fled, and they have to stop Nick before he kills someone, because there’s no coming back from that.

Monroe gets Nick’s scent in the woods and he and Hank head after him.

Nick comes up to a house with a mom, dad and a little girl just getting home. Oh noes! What if he kills a family??

Here's a non-zombie Nick to look at until next week.
Here’s a non-zombie Nick to look at until next week.

The episode ends with “This Ain’t Over Yet” title and a then a ‘this season Grimm’ sizzle reel (we can’t find it anywhere on line! Google has failed us!) that ends with what looks like Nick shooting Monroe! What? Why?

So a fun, fast, mostly excellent episode to start off the new season. No word on when that rumored second Grimm will show up, though.

Check back next Friday for our recap of episode two: “PTZD.”

The full episode can be watched at Hulu or on NBC.com; new episodes air on NBC on Friday’s at 9 p.m.

If you’re new to Grimm but don’t want to binge-watch two seasons before next Friday, you can download “Grimm: The Essential Guide” from iTunes (it’s free!).

Abducted, the new horror/sci-fi thriller from Glen Scantlebury and Lucy Phillips (My Tiny Universe, Steal America) stars Trevor Morgan (Chasing 3000, The Rookie) and Tessa Ferrer (Go For Sisters, Grey’s Anatomy) as a couple who are abducted from Griffith Park by unknown assailants. Together with four other couples they meet in their imprisonment, they must figure out who has taken them–and why.

Morgan and Ferrer play David and Jessica, a couple visiting Los Angeles from New York. While on a sightseeing hike near the Griffith Observatory, they are taken hostage by spooky figures in orange hazmat suits and gas masks. They wake up, in their underwear, in a dank, dark room where they are held and subjected to intense psychological abuse and strange medical experiments.

Jessice (Tessa Ferrer) attempts to escape in “Abducted.”

Numerous escape attempts reveal fellow kidnapped couples, each with their own theories: Justin (Doug Haley) and Summer (Emily Graham-Handley) who reinforce Jessica and David’s believe that they were kidnapped to be held for ransom as Jessica’s dad is a General in Afghanistan and Justin’s is a wealthy producer; Eliot (Aidan Park) and Maria (Vivan Dugre) are scientists who believe it is alien abduction and have been following similar missing people cases across the country. They believe the aliens take couples so that they can create a human-alien hybrid who can take over the earth; and Buzz (Ross Thomas) and Tiffany (Jelly Howie) who believe it’s the government creating super-soldiers.

A spooky, silent child (May Turnure) wanders the halls in "Abducted."

Full of spooky details (hair and nails don’t grow, phones never lose their charge though they don’t get a signal, a pale blonde child wandering the halls) and a complement of red herrings, Abducted does a good job of keeping the audience in suspense (and at times, horrified) and questioning what is going on. While there are a few ‘wait, but why…?’ moments, the film is well-paced, well-written and well-acted and for fans of thrillers/suspense movies,  a well spent hour and thirty minutes.

Abducted is a Entertainment One and Hidden Agenda presentation with Pavement Pictures. The film can be purchased on DVD for $19.98 and is also available on Xbox Video. For more information, visit their website or Facebook page.

Blood and Guts is back for another fantastically bloody season! This marks the 3rd season for the YouTube series that focuses on practical effects. Read on to get an in depth look at the show via an interview with the show’s director-producer, Jack Bennett!

http://youtu.be/lZo7ATlAwcs

Teaser for Blood and Guts season 3

What is the show ‘Blood and Guts’ all about?

It’s a celebration of makeup effects artists, creature creators, and all the practical effects artists who were the cornerstones of our favorite movies. The film industry is sidelining a lot of amazing talents who are at the top of their game and create extraordinary effects that we’re often missing out of because it’s easier for studios to spend effects dollars in post rather than putting them in a production budget. The show is a chance for us to showcase the kinds of effects we’ve been missing, and also revel in some gore whenever it’s appropriate.

What should people expect for season 3?

An original character designed specifically for Scott by Academy Award winning makeup artist Joel Harlow, an in-depth look at the creation of an original maze for Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights, an appearance by a genuine horror icon, a melted Scott head, a look back at the groundbreaking work that came out of Stan Winston Studios… all that and more!

What has been the best thing about working on this show?

Just getting to focus on what I love about genre movies, and getting a chance to look at the reality of what went into making these sights that you kind of took for granted when you first saw them. In a weird way that’s the point: they’re effects, you’re not supposed to say “Wow, great effect,” you’re supposed to just accept the reality of what you’re seeing. The best for me is just meeting these people who I’ve admired and in some cases I’ve been in awe of for much of my life, and getting to ask them all my stupid fanboy questions. Seeing Scott get excited about the same stuff is up there too.

What had been your favorite practical effect done on the show thus far?

At the risk of sounding like we peaked early, it’s hard to beat Jerry Constantine’s chainsaw gag in the third episode of Season 1. But I love every episode. Jennifer Aspinall turned Scott into a fat old hippie so we could walk him into a guitar store unrecognized, how great is that? I got to be face-to-face with the very wolf that attacked Griffin Dunne in An American Werewolf in London. The animatronic characters at Spectral Motion and studioADI, can’t beat those. Shooting an action scene at Ron Trost’s with Scott was a blast, with Scott running in the snow and bullet hits going off all around him. Gary Tunnicliffe did a great zombie bite for us, shooting that with an actress named Vanessa Cate ripping out part of Scott’s neck was a highlight. The design of Joel Harlow’s Deep One hybrid, who Scott affectionately called The Fishman, was stunning. It’s an unsettling face. When it was finished Scott, was posing for photos and it was hard to make eye contact when he’d turn to me. Then Tony Gardner did something in his episode, the October 17th one, that lifted my spirits in a way few things have in my adult life. In the raw footage you hear me say “I’m so fulfilled,” when I heard my own voice while I was editing I could hear how much I meant it. All because of a gory effect, the kind of thing that would make a non-fan roll their eyes. Or cover them.

Has anything you’ve seen on the show grossed you out?

I’m so desensitized I don’t react to the actual mechanics of it beyond awe at the craft. So much so that I screened the Rob Hall episode, in which Scott gets his face sliced clean off his skull, to a classroom full of college kids as part of a lecture, and it did not even occur to me to warn them how graphic it was. When I saw their faces and heard them gasp, I was confused for a second. Then I remembered oh, right, not everyone is fucking warped like I am. It takes a really great film, something like Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance or Oldboy, to get me to react to the violence, and even then it’s the story and the characters and my attachment to them that give me that dreadful feeling in my stomach. I’m not a true crime guy, real-life violence in life continues to appall me, but I still love it in movies. The grossest, grisliest, most terrifying images are all fantastic to me just so long as they’re fake.

Make sure to tune in every Thursday in October for another awesome episode of Blood and Guts on the Nerdist channel!

In case you missed them, here are episodes 1 and 2! Make sure to check later today for episode 3!

Here is a press release from the Nerdist marking the season’s debut:

Following two successful seasons, Blood and Guts with Scott Ian has returned to the Nerdist Channel with Season 3. A new episode will debut every Thursday in October, leading up to the season finale on Halloween. The Season 3 premiere – which features Johnny Depp’s regular makeup designer, Academy Award winner Joel Harlow – can be viewed on the Nerdist Channel: [http://youtu.be/ki08bC2ZpuM]

Blood and Guts is hosted by Scott Ian, guitarist and founding member of legendary metal band Anthax. Ian, a longtime horror aficionado, gives viewers a behind-the-scenes looks at how some of the all-time greatest practical effects artists create the gore and monsters that genre fans love. The series differs from typical behind-the-scenes shows due to Ian’s infectious excitement and curiosity, coupled with the clever ways the effects are integrated into each episode. Ian is often the one in the makeup chair, experiencing squibs, gore appliances and complex character makeups with rare enthusiasm.

“I’ve been into horror longer than music, longer than comics. It was my first true nerd-love,” says Ian. “And that love affair still burns hot all these years later. Horror has been a huge influence on my music career, my writing, and now I get to actually be a part of it by hosting Blood and Guts. It’s my dream gig.”Previous guests on the show included the likes of 7 time Academy Award winner Rick Baker, Greg Nicotero of The Walking Dead and frequent Guillermo Del Toro collaborators Spectral Motion. Season 3 of Blood and Guts ups the ante with an original creature created by Joel Harlow exclusively for the series, unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to the creation of Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights and an episode with Tony Gardner that includes a surprise visit from a legendary horror character, reprised by the original actor.Blood and Guts with Scott Ian is produced by Chris Hardwick’s Nerdist Channel as part of their partnership with Youtube, with episodes premiering online alongside All-Star Celebrity Bowling and other Nerdist content. The show was originally launched with Fangoria’s involvement, but Nerdist has taken on full production duties for Season 3. The dedicated crew remains the same, with Jack Bennett directing and producing each episode. “The show works in two ways,” explains Bennett. “You can watch it in awe of the extraordinary talent of these artists, or you can tune in to see Scott get his face ripped off. I love both.”

uzumaki9

Junji Ito’s horror manga, Uzumaki, will be released in an omnibus edition tomorrow October 15th and will retail for $27.99 US. This edition will be a hardcover format including all 19 chapters plus a bonus “lost chapter” (and 12 color pages).

 uzumaki2

The story follows young Kirie Goshima and her boyfriend Shuichi Saito who live in a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan. Shuichi believes the town is cursed by spirals. It sounds a little silly at first but this manga is definitively dark and disturbing. In the beginning, the stories are in the format of a “monster of the week” but towards the last third of the book a plot evolves that explores what is behind the spiral curse.

uzumaki8

The characters/environment/situations are drawn in a realistic way and sometimes you could say there is too much detail. This makes you become more attached to the characters because they seem like they could be real people. However, there is not a lot of character development besides the two main characters but that is partly because most of the side characters do not survive to the next chapter. The characters are drawn in such a way that all of their emotions are easy to read and when they are exaggerated, they are that much more intense. The art style utilizes shadows and an overall darkness that contributes to the horror feel of the story.

uzumaki4

Many of the stories have some of the creepiest and gut wrenching visuals that stay with you. I do not want to give too much away but I included some pages/visuals to give you an idea of the art style and convey some of the gruesome imagery. I would not say it is “scary” but it creeps up on you and grosses you out. Ito did an excellent job of showing movement in stationary 2D images. There is a part (spoiler) where a woman holds a pair of scissors up and is about to smash them into her ear. You do not see it happen but your brain fills in the movement. Numerous parts in this manga are like that. They lead you into a horrendous situation and suddenly another horrible thing is happening.

uzumaki3

I enjoyed Ito’s previous collection, Museum of Terror – Tomie, and he did not disappoint with Uzumaki. This is a must for horror readers! You get tons of gore and horror in this big package! Side note, if you feel as wigged out as I did after, make sure to read the humorous afterward to make yourself feel a little better.

Briefly: With just over a week to go until premiere, FX has just debuted a new featurette and two new promos for the anticipated American Horror Story: Coven.

The featurette digs into the portrayal of Voodoo in Hollywood, and in essence, just how wrong it is. We see interviews with real Voodoo priestesses and historians, and it really makes you wonder how the Voodoo will be portrayed in the series.

In any case, I can’t wait. Take a look at the new videos below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the premiere. American Horror Story: Coven debuts on October 9th!

American Horror Story: Coven tells the secret history of witches and witchcraft in America. Over 300 years have passed since the turbulent days of the Salem witch trials and those who managed to escape are now facing extinction. Mysterious attacks have been escalating against their kind and young girls are being sent away to a special school in New Orleans to learn how to protect themselves. Wrapped up in the turmoil is new arrival, Zoe (Taissa Farmiga), who is harboring a terrifying secret of her own. Alarmed by the recent aggression, Fiona (Jessica Lange), the long-absent Supreme, sweeps back into town, determined to protect the Coven and hell-bent on decimating anyone who gets in her way.

Briefly: Following the opening credits reveal and new promos from just a few days back, FX today debuted two new teasers for the upcoming American Horror Story: Coven.

With just 11 days to go until the season premiere, I wonder just how many  teasers they could possibly have up their sleeves. Seriously, there has to be at least two dozen by now.

The two newest videos, titled “The Stand” and “Black Hat” are effective as always, and do a good job of reminding me that I can’t wait until October 9th. Take a look at the new videos below, and let us know what you think!

Today on Kickstarter, we explore the weird and wild of steampunk storytelling with Nick Moore’s “The Astonishing Adventures of Heracles Flint“, a promising action-filled steampunk and horror extravaganza that not only allows, but invites prospective writers to come roll around in the Victorian dirt with Heracles and his team a while. The adventure pits the titular Heracles Flint against a time-travelling Dracula who obtains this infamous time-travelling device from a descendent of H.G. Wells out on one of those carefree time-travelling sprees. That’ll teach you to drink and time-travel (unless you’re drinking necks, apparently).

As an opener, I interviewed Mr. Moore on why we should be giving Heracles Flint a first, second, and possibly a hundredth look.

So I have to say it: Alan Moore… Nick Moore… steampunk comic-style…

No relation unfortunately, but maybe there’s something about the name that makes us seek out the weird.  Shame he’s not a relative as trips to the pub would be damn cool!  I am a huge fan though with his run on Miracleman, rather than everyone’s favourite Watchmen, being my top comic read.  Strangely though I’ve never actually read his League of Extraordinary Gentlemen books!!

Was Kickstarter your original goal for this project?

Not originally as I’ve been tinkering with Flint’s world for years before Kickstarter launched in the UK allowing me to submit a project.  Every passion project at some point, if you want to let other people into the little universe in your head, will need money behind it to grow and flourish.  Kickstarter gives me two things if it’s successful.  Firstly a professional edit of the book, which is a necessity for any writer.  Apart from checking spelling and grammar, it’s a pair of fresh eyes to ensure you haven’t sliced the same vampyre twice, and the airship is pointing the right way when battling on the Las Vegas strip.  When you’re in full flow little crucial details can trip you up.

The second thing is art. While comics are a huge passion of mine, I’ve a 10,000+ collection causing stress fractures in my house, I’d already spun the novel out of a movie idea, and didn’t want to change formats having expanded the tale to try to fit it into a comic, yet.  But the chance to have those characters made real as comic art was too good to pass up, so the funding also goes to bring the services of fantastic artist Bentti Bisson on board.  He’s already done one amazing piece for me to make sure we were on the same page creatively, and wow he just stepped into my head and laid Flint out in grand comic book style.  I really want the Kickstarter to work to get all his character pieces done as a showcase of just how good he is.

Have you slept at all?

Ah… no 🙂  Crowd-funding is all about getting eyes on target, as no matter how good a project may be if no one knows it’s there, you’ll get nowhere, there’s no crowd-funding without a crowd.  While there are plenty of tools to let you automate Tweets, G+ posts, etc, there’s still a huge amount of work in setting that up, and trying to balance getting the word out without spamming networks to death.  I hope I’m getting that right with reaching 41% funded in less than two weeks, though the lack of sleep is making things blurry.

Steampunk opens up a rich opportunity for world-creation as well as social commentary. What’s your favorite twist about the genre, and how do you keep it all straight in your head?

I have no shame in saying I’m an action fan, and I think my favourite thing is the element of shock and awe you can give to a Victorian setting. Everything is sedate and oh so very proper, ladies and gentlemen dressed in their finest, horses hooves and carriage wheels on cobblestoned streets is about as loud and busy as it gets. Then you can smash into that street with a four story high mechanical man, all gears and boilers, smoke belching from huge chimney stacks on its back, and a maniacal crackpot inventor sitting in its chest pulling levers. You get to quickly and spectacularly shatter that civilised veneer, that was always pretty thin as it covered horrible divisions in society between the rich and poor.  This was the era that found it ok to stuff children up chimneys to clean them, maybe some people still do, but I can’t get any of my three to fit!

As for keeping it all straight, reading is the key, along with Evernote, man it’s a blessing.  If you want to write about a place or real person from the era that Steampunk springs from, it’s essential to read up on them and find out as much as you can. There’s a wealth of history to play with and it’s a delight to delve into historical figures, and learn about things that don’t make it into the general view people might have of them.

How much does historical accuracy factor into Heracles Flint’s world?

Historical accuracy is a double edged sword when it comes to writing fiction.  You can have great fun tying a character into a factual setting, but it can quickly become a creative nightmare if you can’t get room to manoeuvre in that setting to tell your story.  For Flint’s world I haven’t rewritten history as many Steampunk themed tales do, as the battles Heracles and his Society of Esoteric Technica fight are kept away from the public.  Their efforts are meant to spare the everyday person from the horrors that the forces of darkness want to visit upon them.  It’s the small, I suppose geeky, details of history that I get to have fun with.  For example Queen Victoria fell down stairs in Windsor Castle in 1883 which had a permanent effect on her health from then on.  That tiny detail I work into her appearance in the story just for the lark of having it there, it’s terribly geeky 🙂

You list several impressive genres in your description of the story. Tell us something loveable about these genres that can be seen in your book.

The story touches on several of the ‘punk’ genres of sci-fi in some way or another, and the expanded universe, will give more focus to each one.  In addition to these the classic monsters of horror are also along for the ride.  Vampire hordes led by Dracula himself, none of whom sparkle by the way.  Werewolves, who are a misunderstood society pushed to extinction by humanity.  Frankenstein’s butt kicking bride, a McDonalds loving stranded alien, and a traveller from the 22nd century.  For Steampunk elements, aside from just having the general air of Victorian science fiction, I have the staple of the genre, the airship.  A grand leviathan that makes it to present day Las Vegas to take on some modern aircraft above that brilliantly crazy city.  As for the other fringe sci-fi elements we have, without wanting to give too much away, cyborgs, biological nightmares, other worldly nanotechnology, and some lightning infused Teslapunk.

Now how about something new that this world brings to the genres.

Beyond the fact that I don’t think I’ve seen a story that mixes up the wide range of sci-fi and horror that runs rampant throughout the book, I hope the thing it brings is accessibility. Flint’s first astonishing adventure is a wild ride that acts as a mainstream on ramp to the many genres it incorporates.  It will allow the deeper themes of those genres to be further explored in the planned sequels, the expanded universe, and in other tales featuring the characters together and on solo adventures.  If you ask people in the street if they’ve heard of Steampunk, or perhaps Atompunk, you’ll most likely get a blank stare.  I hope to be able to give them a doorway through which new readers will take their first steps into a fantastical new world, within which they find tales to make the heart race, and challenge their attitudes on many social issues.  If I can gain an audience for my stories, and signpost them to William Gibson, G. D. Falksen, or Gail Carriger, I’ll be a happy man.

What’s your hope in regards to opening the world of Heracles Flint up to other artists and writers?

I’d love to be able to build a platform for other talented creators to set up shop in a corner of Flint’s universe, and create spin off novels, comics, maybe even web series or radio dramas featuring the characters.  I’m writing some new ones just for this purpose and it will give people the opportunity to make things like roleplay blogs, which Tumblr is brilliant for, though there’s far too many Tony Starks on there 🙂  The book establishes a time-line of events that spans over a century, and the sequels will expand that further.  There’s the potential for a new comics and novel universe waiting for people to dive in and have fun, the sky’s the limit.  It would be so amazing to head to my local comics shop, or make my weekly download from Comixology, and see some of my characters in books that have other people letting loose with their imaginations.

Who would win in a fight: Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Heracles Flint?

Hmmm this one is hard to call. While Heracles is a Victorian era gentleman he has a healthy respect for women’s abilities as warriors, and is all too aware that some may outclass him. So as soon as he sees Buffy is capable of possibly kicking his ass he’ll give no quarter in his efforts to put her down.  He’ll also have an edge due to a handy array of gadgetry so I’ll give this one to him 🙂

Thank you to Nick Moore for sparing some of his blood, sweat, and no-sleep filled time with Geekscape! You can donate to the Heracles Flint society here. In fact, one of the rewards even includes your visage as a society member! Don’t wait. Act now. The world may depend on it.

Briefly: It’s been a relatively slow Friday, but of course, another day means another promo for the highly anticipated American Horror Story: Coven.

Today, we get both a new poster and a teaser featuring some actual footage. Most of the other teasers, while creepy and creative, don’t actually have a lot to do with the series, but not so with this preview. “Burn” features our first look at AHS alum Taissa Farmiga, well, being a witch.

Take a look at the video (and image) below, and let us know what you think! American Horror Story: Coven premieres on October 9th!

Briefly: Following the slithery new teaser released just yesterday, FX has debuted four new posters for the highly anticipated American Horror Story: Coven.

It’s a good thing that the marketing for the series thus far has been very effective, otherwise we’d all be beyond sick of it by now. It seems as though there’s either a new poster or teaser released daily, but at this point I’m simply so excited for Coven that I’ll take whatever I can get!

Take a look at the four new posters below, and let us know if you’re excited! The 13-part American Horror Story: Coven premieres on October 9th!
