Briefly: This may just be the show’s creepiest teaser yet!

FX has just debuted a new teaser for next month’s highly anticipated American Horror Story: Coven. The preview fits in well the the first poster released for the series, and it clocks in at just under 30 seconds.

It’s creepy as hell, but since it’s so short, I won’t spoil it for you. Check out the preview below, and let us know if it creeped you out! American Horror Story: Coven premieres on October 9th!

http://youtu.be/2kXEA6McYn4

American Horror Story: Coven tells the secret history of witches and witchcraft in America. Over 300 years have passed since the turbulent days of the Salem witch trials and those who managed to escape are now facing extinction. Mysterious attacks have been escalating against their kind and young girls are being sent away to a special school in New Orleans to learn how to protect themselves. Wrapped up in the turmoil is new arrival, Zoe (Taissa Farmiga), who is harboring a terrifying secret of her own. Alarmed by the recent aggression, Fiona (Jessica Lange), the long-absent Supreme, sweeps back into town, determined to protect the Coven and hell-bent on decimating anyone who gets in her way.

Briefly: Another day, another piece of marketing for next month’s premiere of American Horror Story: Coven.

It’s a good thing it’s great marketing, otherwise we’d all be very sick of it by now. FX today debuted two creepy new posters for the series, each depicting some sort of shadowy, human robaxacet dolls. Actually, they’re probably teasing the fact that voodoo will have a place in the series, but really, who knows at this point!

Take a look at each of the images below, and  be sure to read the plot synopsis for the first episode if you haven’t already. American Horror Story: Coven premieres on October 9th!

Briefly: Following the cool ‘Initiation’ promo released just yesterday, FX has revealed the plot synopsis for American Horror Story: Coven‘s debut episode, Bitchcraft.

Unsurprisingly, Coven sounds intriguing as hell! The season premieres on October 9th, and should be an absolute blast. Take a gander at the synopsis below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to it!

A young girl, Zoe, is shattered to discover she possesses a strange genetic affliction tracing back to the dark days of Salem. Zoe is whisked away to Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies, a mysterious school in New Orleans devoted to safeguarding the few remaining descendants who share this unique bloodline. Harboring a secret agenda, Fiona Goode, the most powerful witch of their generation, returns to town, reigniting old rivalries with the Coven’s deadly enemies, the Voodoo.

Briefly: The premiere of American Horror Story: Coven is fast approaching, and FX has just debuted a new teaser for the anticipated series.

Today’s preview offers our first official look at much of Coven‘s celebrated (and returning) cast in their new roles. It’s another well produced, creepy teaser that does a great job at garnering excitement for the upcoming season.

Briefly: Following the release of American Horror Story: Coven‘s key art and synopsis earlier this week, FX has debut another brief, creepy teaser for the upcoming third season of the popular series.

This marks the fifth teaser for Coven, none of which likely reference anything in the season itself (much like last year’s Asylum teasers). They are however, all very brief, and all creepy as hell.

Take a look at the teaser, titled Coffin below, and let us know what you think! American Horror Story: Coven premieres on October 9th!

Briefly: Following the latest creepy teaser for American Horror Story‘s upcoming third season, FX today debuted some key art, plus a first synopsis for Coven!

I was a huge fan of the first two seasons of AHS, and love that each consecutive year of the show is a self contained story (though I’d love to jump back into the murder house). I really can’t wait to see what Coven brings to the table, and if it can hold its own again season two’s Asylum!

Take a look at both the first poster and first synopsis below, and let us know if you’re really excited (like I am). American Horror Story: Coven premieres on October 9th!

Briefly: FX today released a fourth extremely brief, extremely creepy teaser for the upcoming American Horror Story: Coven.

The video clocks in at just 21 seconds, so I won’t give away anything that the teaser reveals. It likely has almost nothing to do with what the season will actually offer (as with Asylum‘s teasers), but I’m damned excited to see more.

Briefly: Looks like we won’t be getting a Paranormal Activity this year after all. Instead, we’ll get a double dose in 2014.

That’s right. First up is Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, a Latino-themed spinoff to the franchise that will hit theatres on January 3rd. Then, on October 24th, we’ll get Paranormal Activity 5, a direct continuation of the series we’ve been watching for the past few years.

I was a big fan of Paranormal Activity 1-3, but absolutely abhorred the fourth film. Hopefully the extra time they’re taking with the fifth instalment can get things back on track. Are you looking forward to the two films next year, or have you had enough of the series? Sound out below!

As a Nightmare on Elm Street fanboy, I absolutely 100% could not turn down a chance to interview Robert Rusler (star of Nightmare 2: Freddy’s Revenge & Weird Science). Luckily for me the new project he’s promoting Black Asylum looks pretty fucking amazing too. Check the teaser trailer below

The world has just lost a legend.

Richard Matheson, author of classics such as I Am Legend, A Stir of EchoesWhat Dreams May Come, and countless others, died on Sunday at 87.

Details of his passing are still largely unknown. Mathesons daughter, Ali, wrote the following of her father’s death:

“My beloved father passed away yesterday at home surrounded by the people and things he loved…he was funny, brilliant, loving, generous, kind, creative, and the most wonderful father ever…I miss you and love you forever Pop and I know you are now happy and healthy in a beautiful place full of love and joy you always knew was there…”

We can say without a doubt that the horror and sci-fi genres would be vastly different without Matheson’s work. I Am Legend remains one of the most terrifying and heartbreaking stories that I’ve ever read, and I don’t think that’s ever going to change. It’s a tale that I reread often, and one that’s impossible to get through without finding myself covered in goosebumps.

The film and television worlds have been just as blessed my Matheson’s craft. Film’s like Real SteelNight of the Living Dead, The Omega Man, and many episodes of The Twilight Zone would never have existed without him.

Richard, you will be missed. Feel free to share your memories of Matheson’s work below.

We first reported on The Walking Dead: 400 Days DLC a few days back, and today the content became official.

Sony announced it during their just-concluded E3 press conference, and also revealed that the game will be coming to Playstation Vita. The Walking Dead: 400 Days is an add-on for Season One of Telltale’s acclaimed title, and will be released this Summer.

The first trailer for the new chapter has been revealed, and I couldn’t be more excited. Sony didn’t mention The Last Guardian, so this news served as one of the most exciting portions of Sony’s conference (only because I’m such a sucker for this game, the rest of the conference was pretty great).

Watch the teaser below, and let us know what you think. We’ll update you as we learn more on this one!

The world of last year’s best game is about to expand.

Telltale’s 2012 adventure title, The Walking Dead, is one of the most heart-wrenching, addicting, and emotional experiences that the gaming world has ever offered. At the close of the game’s fifth and final chapter last November, Geekscape and the entire gaming world was dying for more from this universe.

A second season of the game was confirmed some time ago, as was the chance of some DLC for the first title. Based on a listing that has popped up on the Steam Database, we may not be waiting much longer for more content.

Little is known about the add-on or what it will entail, but it appears to be subtitled 400 Days. Telltale Games has also been tweeting small teasers that correspond to the leak, so they’re definitely ramping up to something.

Check out the teasers below, and let us know just how excited you are! We’ll be sure to give you more info as we discover it.

This is going to be a fantastic month. Between Naughty Dog’s The Last of UsMan of SteelDexter, The Killing, and of course Under the Dome, I have no idea where I’m going to find the time to get anything done… and I couldn’t be more excited.

Brian K. Vaughan’s adaptation of Stephen King’s Under the Dome premieres in just a few weeks, and CBS has released a cool batch of images to excite you for it. The images are a mixture of stills from the pilot episode and production photos, and while they reveal little about the series, they still look damn fine.

Take a look at the images below, and let us know if you’re excited for the series! A full-length trailer was released a few weeks back, and should serve to further excite you if you haven’t seen it. Under the Dome premieres on June 24th.

I love me some hyper violence, WW2 films and a little bit of sci-fi history. So when I saw this trailer for Frankenstein’s Army I flipped out.

Frankenstein’s Army stars Karel Roden, Joshua Sasse, Robert Gwilym, Alexander Mercury, Luke Newberry, Hon Ping Tang, Andrei Zayats, Mark Stevenson and you can check it out On-Demand July 26th and in select theaters.

Warning: In case you missed the “Red-Band” in the title, the trailer below is very NSFW. If you’re squeamish or are simply not fond of grotesque imagery, stay far away from this one.

With just a few weeks to go until V/H/S/2 hits VOD, Magnet has released the first red-band trailer for the film. It’s very red-band, and is filled with disturbing clips from each short featured in the anthology. If you were a fan of the first movie, V/H/S/2 looks to have stepped up its game in almost every way.

V/H/S/2 hits VOD on June 6th, theatres on July 12th, and features segments by Jason Eisner (Hobo With a Shotgun), Eduardo Sanchez and Gregg Hale (The Blair Witch Project), Gareth Evans (The Raid), Timo Tjahjanto (Macabre), and Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett (A Horrible Way to Die). Watch the red-band trailer below, and let us know what you think!

Inside a darkened house looms a column of TVs littered with VHS tapes, a pagan shrine to forgotten analog gods. The screens crackle and pop endlessly with monochrome vistas of static—white noise permeating the brain and fogging concentration. But you must fight the urge to relax: this is no mere movie night. Those obsolete spools contain more than just magnetic tape. They are imprinted with the very soul of evil.

From the demented minds that brought you last year’s V/H/S comes V/H/S/2, an all-new anthology of dread, madness, and gore. This follow-up ventures even further down the demented path blazed by its predecessor, discovering new and terrifying territory in the genre. This is modern horror at its most inventive, shrewdly subverting our expectations about viral videos in ways that are just as satisfying as they are sadistic. The result is the rarest of all tapes—a second generation with no loss of quality.

Following the first teaser trailer released late last month, Dark Sky Films has just released a new unrated preview for the upcoming third chapter in the Hatchet franchise. It looks like everything you’d expect from a Hatchet film, and classic slasher fans should find plenty to love with this one.

I’ve never seen Hatchet myself. Is it something I should be checking out? Watch the new trailer for Hatchet III below, and let us know what you think! The film hits theatres and on-demand on June 14th!

HATCHET III continues the tale of the now-iconic villain Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder). As a search and recovery team heads into the haunted swamp to pick up the pieces and carnage left behind from the first two films, Marybeth (Danielle Harris) hunts down the true secret to ending the voodoo curse that has left the ghost of Victor Crowley haunting and terrorizing Honey Island Swamp for decades.

Horror fans, here’s the trailer you’ve been waiting for! It’s gory, outrageous, not-safe-for-work, and it looks like a bloody good time. Hatchet III is set to premiere in Los Angeles on June 14th, with a (hopeful) theatrical release coming soon after!

Watch the full trailer below, and let us know what you think! Were you a fan of the first two films?

As you likely know, the Psycho and Hannibal Lecter series of films have now been given the contemporary prequel treatment on the small screen. In the last 40 days, Bates Motel debuted on A&E, while Hannibal premiered on NBC during the WonderCon weekend. These two films are among the most iconic in movie history. The question is, if we already know where the series’ must end, how liberal can the television series’ that fill in the gaps really be?

HANNIBAL main cast
HANNIBAL Main Cast

The newer of the two series’, Hannibal so far seems most likely to succeed. Despite being on a network long-known for letting good shows die rather quickly (typically by canceling early), Hannibal seems to be well produced and scripted. The series stars Mads Mikkelsen (CASINO ROYALE) as the titular Dr. Hannibal Lecter, Laurence Fishburne (THE MATRIX TRILOGY) as Jack Crawford and Hugh Dancy (ADAM) as a slightly tweaked version of FBI profiler Will Graham. Fans have seen glimpses of who Will Graham was before Dr. Lecter infected his life, but now we’ll see a different side as it is stated that he likely has Asperger’s Syndrome (a much milder form of Autism). This helps explain the wild imagination and almost total empathy, while shedding light on why he insists on limited social interaction and almost no eye contact. It also fits with the “all business” personality of the character that we saw from Edward Norton in Red Dragon. What we really need to see is how the “good” doctor progresses throughout the series. At the moment, he’s played rather well by Mikkelsen, though not nearly as creepily as by Hopkins. Not yet anyway. That may occur as we get farther down the line. Most of the menace from the character is what we, as fans, infer upon it. Since we know the endgame, we read more into it than may even be there, but I get the feeling that it’s exactly what the show runners are banking on at this point. NBC isn’t skimping on the creepy/shock factor for the crimes that the team investigates, that’s for sure. There are 13 episodes ordered for the first season, and so far they’re rather good, but fans deserve and desire more, and we’re hoping the content keeps improving.

Norman and Norma Bates
Norman and Norma Bates

Bates Motel is the prequel series to Alfred Hitchcock’s most (in)famous film, Psycho. Although we never saw her alive in the film or its sequels, the first certainly gave us a brief insight into Norma Bates. The first few episodes have been very rich and filled with decent characters, but Norman doesn’t yet feel like the Bates we’ve all come to know and be scared of. There’s a creepy factor coming off of Freddie Highmore (CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY) that works for a young Norman Bates, but what I didn’t expect was for him to be a much less socially awkward version of the Norman Bates we all know and hate. Then there’s the real psychopath, his mother Norma, played wonderfully by Vera Farmiga (THE DEPARTED). While she may seem to be little more than a devoted mother, there’s clearly an underlying evil that I was surprised to see in just the first episode.  From there, every awkward moment I’ve seen appears to have the classic Psycho music in the background. Halfway throughout the ten episode first season, it’s already been a very promising start, worthy of the beloved series of horror films.

Dr. Hannibal Lecter
Dr. Hannibal Lecter

We should expect a second season, at least for Bates Motel, as it has already been ordered. We’ll be waiting awhile for NBC  to come to their senses and order a second season of Hannibal. As for whether they’ll do justice to the old stuff, we’ll have to take a look back after the end of these first seasons, but at present they’re working their way to becoming rather impressive. Now, I’d love to tell you it feels exactly the same, but as these characters are younger than their established selves, the fandom will have to decide.

The newest trailer for the latest Netflix original series, Hemlock Grove has just been released online. If you missed the ‘Red Band’ moniker in the post’s title, here’s one further warning: the preview earned its red band by featuring scenes of mild fornication, fellatio, heavy cocaine use, lesbian necrophilia,  and violent hemorrhaging. If you’re sensitive to graphic imagery, or are a small child, DON’T WATCH THE TRAILER BELOW! Everyone else, enjoy!

The show looks pretty damn cool, doesn’t it? The first season of the Eli Roth produced Hemlock Grove hits Netflix on April 19th! Interested in its source material? Hemlock Grove is based on a novel by Brian McGreevy.

Our very own Kari Lane was lucky enough to attend the show’s panel at WonderCon last month, read her recap for even more info!

For the record, I would like to state that I hate Evil Dead’s marketing campaign, boasting itself as the most horrifying film of all time and blah blah blah. Going into it, I was expecting to be scared. Naturally. I mean the trailer almost made me shit my pants. I was at the world premiere at SXSW, really excited to see the film and was… well essentially dumbstruck at how terrified I was throughout. Like this shit is ACTUALLY the scariest thing I’ve ever seen. This weekend I even had to go a second time just to make sure it wasn’t just me reacting to the gore. Guess what. It wasn’t. Not only was I still scared throughout the second viewing of the film, I had a panic attack in the last ten minutes. Many people have been complaining, saying that it is not as scary or as good as the original films, which is up for debate, but I like to look at the newest interpretation to be closer to what Raimi was going for with his unintentionally funny first film. This is his story with a budget and a modernized artistic vision, and in my opinion it is the best straight horror movie in ages.

Now let’s get things straight, I have a pretty strong stomach when it comes to horror films. I watched The Exorcist post-midnight with all the lights off and didn’t flinch. Same thing with the lesser known Martyrs. There’s something within the concept of the Evil Dead universe that comes across as universally horrifying. Not only does it play on our natural fears of isolationism, the universe as a whole has a history of playing with our nerves in terms of types of gore used. There is an emphasis on self mutilation, especially to smaller, more painful pieces of our bodies like hands, faces and ankles. The original films by Sam Raimi also had a penchant for combining gross out humor with actual horror (ex. all the vomiting and bleeding in Bruce Campbell’s mouth) and the new Evil Dead more than lives up to that aspect. The self-mutilation in this film is used in a very intelligent way that subscribes to the “what isn’t seen is often the scariest” theory. When the more intense gore is shown, it makes sure it has a purpose. There’s a lot of gimmicky gross-out things a la Saw, but they are shown in a manner that makes them actually horrifying instead of just nasty. It makes sure to show you what’s going on so that you know, but only show you just enough and just in time to build suspense WHILE freaking you the fuck out.

evil-dead-poster-hi-res

In addition to all of the “you can’t escape” business and psychological gore, there is one crucial element to horror films that is so rarely talked about. That aspect: the sound design. Sound is one of the most crucial elements in a horror movie. Think about it. Alien. Scream. Even the original Evil Dead. One of the most important pieces of the production that crews slave over endlessly is sound. Wes Craven spent MONTHS trying to get the phone to the right pitch for Scream so that it was presented at the most terrifying pitch possible. This labor is really apparent on the Evil Dead remake; Bruce Campbell himself was responsible for a lot of the work with it. And guess what? It’s absolutely horrifying. The moment when Jane Levy shoots the window and officially becomes possessed, uttering the words “You’re all going to die tonight”, is absolutely classic.

Now you know my actual pretentious film geek perspective on the matter, it’s time to decide if it’s actually the scariest film I’ve ever seen. Thinking about it, my knee-jerk reaction is to say no. There are many other horror movies that are technically better films than this one, but then that’s not really the question, is it? There were probably only about 15 minutes of this movie that I wasn’t petrified, and that was character exposition that makes you care about the fate of the people anyways, so I’ll forgive it. I have never been so constantly terrified in a movie without feeling bombarded and exhausted. The horror is done in a way that doesn’t insult the audience by just having the scary moments happen and leaving them there to die. It follows through with all of its horrific notions to gruesome effect, and lays terror upon terror into the framework of the film in a way that doesn’t let it topple over on itself. Also, SOMEONE CUTS THEIR FACE OFF WITH A PIECE OF GLASS!!!!!!!!!!! If that’s not one of the most horrific things EVER, then I don’t know what is.

SERIOUSLY
SERIOUSLY

So in conclusion, Evil Dead may not be the best horror movie but it certainly is the scariest in my opinion. If you haven’t seen it (which means you’re terrible at being a movie geek), put on a diaper, run to the nearest theater and get ready to SHIT YOUR PANTS in terror. Then you can decide: scariest film ever… or just an overzealous marketing campaign.

You can read Jonathan’s review of the film here.

And check out Brent Moore’s opinion here.

Horror certainly has changed over the years. If you were to hold them side by side, it’d be impossible to see how Psycho lead to Hostel III. However, if you were to work your way through the various decades of horror films, you’ll be able to see just how the genre evolved (or devolved, depending on who you ask).

Here’s a quick breakdown for you though. While the 60’s focused on films like Psycho and Peeping Tom, horror was still mostly tame until Hershell Gordon Lewis came to town with Blood Feast and 2000 Maniacs. You’d think this would mark the start of gore, but it wasn’t. Lewis’ films mostly remained all his own. By the 70’s, horror became more psychologically driven. Films about stalkers, cannibals and revenge dominated the genre. This is where you started to get films like The Hills Have Eyes, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Halloween.

Enter the 1980’s. Suddenly there was a new horror movie every week. You had a nice blend of gore films, low-budget films from Full Moon Pictures and Troma, as well as plenty of Slasher flicks. Eventually, in a sea of sequels, horror died out in the 90’s.

It wasn’t until 1996 that Horror suddenly became important again with Scream, but within a few years, the self aware slasher became tiresome. While the late 90’s/early 2000’s produced a few decent surprises (Cabin Fever comes to mind), most horror fans were clamoring for the eventual release of Rob Zombie’s directorial debut, House of 1000 Corpses.

200px-House_of_1000_Corpses_poster

Rob Zombie created music for Metal-heads and Horror fans (which basically has a lot of overlap). His filmmaking career at that time had been minimal.. He did some animation for Beavis & Butthead Do America, as well as directed some White Zombie music videos, but that was the extent of it.

In the 90’s, he was instrumental in helping revive Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights which opened the door for him to make a film for Universal. What he ended up presenting them was a film so demented, dark and bizarre that Universal believed it would receive a NC-17 rating and refused to release it.

The film is a throwback to the gritty psychological films of the 1970’s blended with the modern day gore. It’s packed with winks and nods to The Manson Family, Hills Have Eyes, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the Marx Brothers. It begins with a group of 4 teenagers (Including pre-Office Rainn Wilson and fat Chris Hardwick) driving around, when they stop at Captain Spaulding’s gas station/Museum of Monsters and Madmen. It’s there that they find out about Dr. Satan, a local serial killer.

Museum

While trying to find the tree where he was hung, they encounter a hitch-hiker named Baby. Shortly after picking her up, they blow a tire and need a tow. Baby informs them her family lives near by and her brother has a tow-truck.

The group end up in a strange dinner/variety show performed by the family, and when they begin to leave the house after their tire has been replaced, they are attacked and held captive for Otis Driftwood’s (Baby’s Adopted Brother) demented experiments. It just gets dark, more deranged and in general unsettling from there.

The film was completed in 2000 but Universal refused to release it. It wasn’t until 3 years later, when Zombie was able to purchase back the rights that he managed to finally get the film released by Lionsgate on April 11th 2003. I remember seeing it the night it came out with a group of friends after work (listening to the movie soundtrack on the drive there). That same weekend, I went for an encore with my girlfriend at the time. The next week we found out her best friend hadn’t seen the movie yet, and I went and saw it a 3rd time.

I know many people who hated this film and consider it Zombie’s worst movie. While I know that The Devil’s Rejects (the films sequel) is a superior film, I have more fun watching this. The film grows in enjoyment ten years later. It’s still just as demented as ever before. Rob Zombie’s weird usage of various camera styles and filters, as well as his unrelenting gore and plain bizarre twists make the movie difficult to follow but still a ton of stupid fun.

Some people might not care, but I say Happy 10 Year Anniversary House of 1000 Corpses.

At WonderCon this past weekend, attendees were treated to a sickenly sweet clip (embedded at the bottom of this page) from the upcoming original Netflix show, Hemlock Grove. That clip was just one tasty tidbit from the panel for the series. In attendance was executive producer Eli Roth, Mark Verheidon, Lee Shipman, Deran Sarafian, and Brian McGreevy (who also wrote the novel that the series is based on). The lead actors were also on the panel and included Famke Janssen, Dougray Scott, Bill Skarsgård, Landon Liboiron, Penelope Mitchell, Freya Tingley, Aaron Douglas, and Kandyse McClure.

panelpicsmall

If the quality and success of House of Cards is any indication of what Netflix original programs can bring, then it looks like Hemlock Grove will be a must see for horror/thriller fans. The show’s plot is simple, yet intriguing: a young girl is murdered and everyone in this small town is a suspect. However, how do you find a killer when everyone has a monster within?

hemlockgrove

When a show or film is based on existing material, the question is always revolves around just how loyal this new adaptation will be to the original? If it is exactly the same, one might wonder why bother remaking it in the first place? Then, if the reincarnation takes the content in a new direction, it’s as if the universe of the story has expanded (or fans hate it because it is not JUST like the original). For those who read the book, Shipman said, “[there will be] surprises for fans of the novel”. McGreevy mentioned that they tried to “cinematize the novel” and that this show follows after Game of Thrones (another show based on a series of books). Roth then spoke about the manuscript from the novel and stated that, “[it]…got to the root of monster mythology.”

Hemlock-Grove-3

All thirteen episodes will be released on April 19th. Watching television shows on Netflix has changed how fans consume their favorite content. No longer do you have to wait for commercials, the next episode, or even next season (sometimes). Verheidon commented on this style of “binge watch[ing]” and mentioned that it’s exactly how they approached the making of the show. It can be viewed as one long movie, because you can “watch more than one at once” (Verheidon) or you can simply go for one at a time. Douglas noted that as an actor, it was “similar to shooting a regular show” but it was less constricting in regards to the use of language, content, and length of the final product. However, that does not mean everything is fair game. Roth said they were still held to the restrictions of what kind of films are currently on Netflix, so nothing too extreme made the final cut.

But not to worry horror fans, the special effects still look bloody awesome! Roth told the audience that his “instincts are to go practical first”. Personally, I prefer practical effects, and they can even be enhanced with computer generated imagery, but when things are only CGI, they tend to just look fake. The effect does not seem to exist in the world with the characters, and that breaks the illusion. In regards to the werewolf transformation, Roth said he wanted it “…violent, visceral…I want the kids who watched Twilight to be horrified”. Most monsters and monster transformations lately seem to glamorize the process and the lifestyle. Monsters are no longer disturbing and something to be feared; rather they are something that can sparkle and be your boyfriend (or girlfriend).  Speaking of the werewolf transformation, they said it was “shot bit by bit by bit” because they wanted it to “look seamless” and they also wanted to “pay homage in a way [to prior werewolf transformations like American Werewolf in London] and be something different” (Sarafian). It is “like a medical condition” (Roth), it “hurts so good” (Sarafian), and a fun descriptive word by Roth, it is a “weregasm”.

Famke explained that what drew her to the project was that it is a “character piece”, and that it has mystery like Twin Peaks. A story that is driven by its characters needs a spectacular cast and Shipman felt they had just that, and expressed that he believed this perfect casting “…will never happen again”. Yes, there will be monsters but this show’s theme according to McGeevy, is about “outsiders finding community”. That is something that could connect with fans across genres.

Hemlock Grove will be available to all Netflix subscribers on April 19th, and hopefully new viewers will join the ranks of horror enthusiasts and enjoy this incredible looking show. Let us hope more shows of this caliber will continue to be made by people who love the content, and that want to bring viewers the best possible experience that they can.

Brian K. Vaughan’s involved, so you know full well that I’m invested.

CBS today revealed our first peek at Under the Dome, the drama based on the popular Stephen King novel. I haven’t read the book myself, but after taking a look at the synopsis and the following video, it sounds and looks quite intriguing.

Here’s a synopsis (for the novel, who knows how close we’ll get):

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester’s Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener’s hand is severed as “the dome” comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when—or if—it will go away.

Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens—town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician’s assistant at the hospital, a selectwoman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing—even murder—to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry. But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn’t just short. It’s running out.

It kind of sounds oddly similar to The Simpsons Movie, but in any case, it looks pretty cool! Watch the first look trailer below, and let us know what you think! Under the Dome‘s 13-part miniseries premieres on June 24th, so you’ve got plenty of time to read the source material.

Magnet releasing announced today that the sequel to last year’s popular horror anthology V/H/S will be hitting theatres (and VOD) this Summer. You’ll be able to check this one out June 6th on VOD, and theatre-dwellers will get their chance on July 12th.

The first teaser for the film (then called S-VHS) released back in January, and as expected is freaky as hell. This sequel will feature segments by Jason Eisner (Hobo With a Shotgun), Eduardo Sanchez & Gregg Hale (The Blair Witch Project), Gareth Evans (The Raid), Timo Tjahjanto (Macabre), and Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett (A Horrible Way to Die).

Two new stills from the film have also been released! Check them out below, and let us know what you think! Were you a fan of the first film?

It’s been some time since we’ve mentioned Telltale’s adaptation of The Walking Dead here on Geekscape. The first season of the game ended all the way back in November, and we’ve been waiting patiently for news of a second season ever since.

Today, we got that news… kind of. In an interview with IGN, Around Every Corner (Episode 4) writer Gary Whitta confirmed that, while a ways off, a second season is actively being developed at Telltale. Sure, it’s not plot, characters, or closure after that heartbreaking final episode, but knowing that we’ll get a second edition of the phenomenal title is news enough.

Fans may also be getting some new content before the game’s second season premieres (whenever that is). Whitta let this juicy tidbit slip during the same interview, stating “But, knowing that it’s a way off, and knowing that people are hungry for more Walking Dead…there may very well be more Walking Dead from Telltale before season two. We may have a little something extra for you between season one and two.”

Amazing. I’m going to start another playthrough immediately in anticipation.

Check out the full interview with Whitta below (largely about his new movie After Earth), and let us know just how excited you are!

Rocker/Writer/Director/Zombie Rob Zombies latest film, The Lords of Salem is due in just two months, and today marked the release of both a new trailer and the official poster!

Check them out below, and let us know what you think! Horror fans, what have you thought of Zombie’s previous works?

LoS Poster

From the singular mind of horror maestro Rob Zombie comes a chilling plunge into a nightmare world where evil runs in the blood. The Lords of Salem tells the tale of Heidi (Sheri Moon Zombie), a radio station DJ living in Salem, Massachusetts, who receives a strange wooden box containing a record, a “gift from the Lords.” Heidi listens, and the bizarre sounds within the grooves immediately trigger flashbacks of the town’s violent past. Is Heidi going mad, or are the “Lords of Salem” returning for revenge on modern-day Salem?

An interesting tweet today from Evil Dead director Fede Alvarez revealed (unsurprisingly) that the film received an NC-17 rating when submitted to the MPAA.

NC-17, of course, is the most extreme rating that the MPAA will give. It replaced the X rating in 1990, and since then only a handful of films have been released as NC-17.

The description of the rating is as follows:

NC-17 — No One 17 and Under Admitted. An NC-17 rated motion picture is one that, in the view of the Rating Board, most parents would consider patently too adult for their children 17 and under. No children will be admitted. NC-17 does not mean “obscene” or “pornographic” in the common or legal meaning of those words, and should not be construed as a negative judgment in any sense. The rating simply signals that the content is appropriate only for an adult audience. An NC-17 rating can be based on violence, sex, aberrational behavior, drug abuse or any other element that most parents would consider too strong and therefore off-limits for viewing by their children.

Evil Dead won’t hit theatres like this of course. The tweet confirmed that Alvarez recut the film to achieve the less extreme R rating.

Does this mean we’ll be getting an unrated cut of the film when it hits Blu-Ray? You have seen the Red Band trailer for Evil Dead, haven’t you?

Evil Dead hits theatres on April 12th.
