Monsters University is coming! Next Summer we’ll finally get to see how Mike and Sulley came to be the best friends that we saw in 2001’s Monsters, Inc.

Disney has just released a teaser poster for the film featuring the lovable duo (again voiced by Billy Crystal and John Goodman) in their university letter jackets. Cute stuff!

I can’t wait! Monsters University will hit theatres on June 21, 2013! Excited?

“Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. Monsters University unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends.

Remember that interview with Colin Trevorrow that led to everyone believing he was working on Star Wars: Episode VII? Well, it seems that we now know what he actually was talking about when he stated:

“I can’t speak with any specificity as to what the next thing will be. There are amazing opportunities that have arisen as a result of this. One of them, I will say, will probably create a good deal of ire against me on the Internet when people find out what it is. So, I just want to say in advance that I promise you, for all those who love the mythology that I will be tackling, trust that I love it as much as you do. And I will respect it, and hopefully make it not suck.”

It seems that the Safety Not Guaranteed director was actually talking about Flight Of The Navigator. Disney has hired Trevorrow and Derek Connolly to rewrite the remake, from a script written by Brad Copeland (Arrested Development). The 1986 original, directed by Randal Kleisner and starring Joey Cramer, has gone on to become a cult classic. The film even featured stars such as Pee Wee Herman and Sarah Jessica Parker. The plot of the film focued on “A 12 year-old boy who goes missing and reappears eight years later having not aged a day. At the same time, an alien spacecraft crashes nearby, which may explain the boy’s disappearance. “

No other details are known at the moment, but that’s definitely a surprising remake for Disney to be working on.

Earlier this month it was announced that Disney’s 90’s hit Boy Meets World was getting a sequel! Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel were in early talks to reprise their roles, which was a very exciting piece of news for fans of the original show.

It’s now official: Deadline has just reported that Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel have BOTH signed on to reprise their roles. I never thought I’d be able to say it, but Corey and Topanga are headed back to television.

Now that they’re officially involved, I can definitely see old fans checking out Girl Meets World. Many of those old fans will have children of their own by now, and it would be very cool to see both generations able to enjoy this show. The series will take place over a decade after Boy Meets World concluded. Corey and Topanga are still together and are now raising a daughter of their own.

Girl Meets World is still early in development and as such, doesn’t yet have a release date. I grew up with the original series, and I’ll certainly be checking this one out whenever it premieres. How about you?

Well this makes me feel old.

It’s already been revealed that Michael Arndt will write Star Wars Episode VII but that film is just the first of the new trilogy and it appears they are already looking for writers for the next two chapters. Deadline‘s Mike Flemming has revealed that Disney have approached Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg to script the next two installments in the new Star Wars trilogy.

Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote The Empire Strikes Back, Return Of The Jedi and Raiders Of The Lost Ark, is definitely going to a welcomed name to write these next chapters. And Simon Kinberg, who worked on X-Men: First Class and the sequel Days Of Future Past and is another name apparently on Disney’s radar.

Now, all we need to know is who is actually directing these films.

UPDATE: Well, it appears that deals have already been closed here and that the two will also be producers on the film. The team will work together on one of the next episode’s of the franchise. According to THR’s Borys Kit:

Not long ago a rumor popped up that Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed) was on the list of contenders to direct Star Wars: Episode VII. The writer/director has actually had meetings at Lucasfilm and it now appears that Trevorrow has actually known about the project and been attached for quite some time. Watch the following video and skip ahead to the 21:15 mark.

I can’t speak with any specificity as to what the next thing will be. And I will respect it, and hopefully make it not suck.

This video actually dates back to June. Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Trevorrow is directing. He definitely has writing experience and that Kathleen Kennedy & George Lucas have mentioned that there are multiple writers involved with the project. Trust us, this should be officially announced sometime very soon.

UPDATE: Well, the director has taken it to Twitter earlier today to announce that he is definitely NOT involved in this project but another one. Well, that’s a little disappointing and now brings up the question of what exactly he is working on.

A second visually stunning trailer has been released for Sam Raimi’s Oz: The Great And Powerful. Check it out below!

Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot–fame and fortune are his for the taking–that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity–and even a bit of wizardry–Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

Oz: The Great And Powerful hits theaters March 8th, 2013.

Back in October Disney released the first piece of a huge triptych poster for their upcoming Oz: The Great and Powerful. The image has now been released in full, and I have to say that it looks rather stellar!

Are you planning to check out the film when it releases in March? What’s been your favourite trip to Oz so far? The Original Wizard? MJ in The Wiz? What about Tin Man?

For the past few weeks we’ve heard plenty of rumors regarding who would direct the highly anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII. At the same time, a screenwriter for the next chapter in the sci-fi franchise is still being sought. According to Vulture, the current leading contender to work on the films’s screenplay is Academy Award winning writer Michael Arndt.

Arndt has previously worked on Little Miss Sunshine, Pixar’s Toy Story 3 as well as the screenplay for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Ardnt has written a 40 to 50 page treatment for the film and will most likely pen a draft for the project. The site reports that the film is looking at a 2014 shoot to get it into theaters in 2015.

So, what about the director? Ardnt’s treatment will be hitting the desks of many of the top directors out there including Steven Spielberg, J.J. Abrams and Brad Bird. We’re not saying that any of these directors are interested in the project but Disney apparently is looking to offer the film to the big directors first.

Ardny is well known as a Star Wars fan and has close relationship with Disney’s Pixar. So it shouldn’t be no surprise that Lucasfilm and Disney would have an interest in him writing the next chapter in the Star Wars saga. As prior stated in these matters…keep an eye for official announcements soon.

The world was shocked last week when Disney and George Lucas announced that Lucas had sold Lucasfilm studio, which includes the rights to Star Wars and most of its characters, to the company. Now, it appears that Disney has possibly turned their attention to buying another company with even more film and toy opportunities for them.

According to MTV, Disney has been in contact with Hasbro about acquiring them and at the moment it’s just talks. But apparently these talks are serious enough that we could see an announcement made any day that the media giant has purchased another company.

Normally, deals like this would take time but Disney has been moving quite quickly to get these deals done. Rumor is that the Lucas deal only took them roughly around six months. With the purchase of Hasbro, Disney would gain the G.I. Joe and Transformers properties. Yes, this means that you may not see any more Michael Bay directed Transformers films after the fourth film comes out. As of the moment none of this is confirmed but that could very well change very soon. However, for now…take this one with a grain of salt.

Expect a lot of rumors to surface when it comes to Star Wars: Episode VII until any official announcements begin to get made. The biggest question that is surrounding this film is who will be directing. Last week I did a list of directors who should direct the next film and it appears that one of the names on that list has surfaced in connection to the film. According to Collider, while this rumor has not been confirmed, X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn may actually be in talks to direct the next chapter in the Star Wars saga.

I’m hearing that Matthew Vaughn, the director of Kick-Ass, Stardust, Layer Cake, and X-Men: First Class, is in talks with Lucasfilm to helm Star Wars: Episode VII. My sources tell me this is the main reason he dropped out of the X-Men sequel (which Bryan Singer is now directing).

So, could this be the real reason Vaughn left the sequel to X-Men: First Class? Quite possibly. Do I think Vaughn would be a fantastic choice to breathe fresh air into this franchise while keeping the things we love about it intact? Definitely. With plans to release Episode VII in 2015 we should definitely be expecting some form of official news regarding the film in the coming months.

Video game movies are a weird anomaly. They’re projects that have plots, atmospheres, and scenes already perfectly laid out,  yet whoever is in charge typically decides to throw all that away, and whatever ends up releasing is an abysmal shell of what could and should have been. Without fail, video game movies SUCK (the latest example of this would be last week’s Silent Hill: Revalation).

So what happens when you make a video game movie about a game that never existed? Wreck-It Ralph is born, and apparently it freaking rocks.

Ralph’s home game, Fix-It Felix Jr.

The premise of Wreck-It Ralph is phenomenal, yet so simple that I’m really surprised it hadn’t been thought of before. Ralph has been doing the job of video game villain for 30 years, and he’s tired of it. The bad guy doesn’t want to be the bad guy anymore, so Ralph sets out to prove that he’s not as much of a villain as everyone makes him out to be. Unbeknownst to Ralph, his leaving the Fix-It Felix arcade cabinet sets off a series of events that could get his own game unplugged, as well as many others in the arcade. Along the way Ralph meets an array of loveable characters, and the film also features countless cameos from other games throughout its duration.

The bad guy never gets invited to parties.

The world of Wreck-It Ralph takes an almost Toy Story approach to explaining how it works. When people are around (the hours that the arcade is open) everyone simply does what they were programmed to do. After hours however, each character has a life of their own just as we do outside of our own work. Being a villain, Ralph is not a very popular guy, and after 30 years he’s understandably lonely and upset about the whole situation.

Ralph ends up in game central (a power bar, which brilliantly explains how the games connect to one another) in order to find a game in which he can win himself a medal (meaning he’ll be seen as a hero instead of a villain). He’ll eventually meet the hilarious Vanellope von Schweetz, an adorable outcast (just like Ralph) that just wants to be a part of her own game (the colorful Kart racer Sugar Rush). The relationship that grows between the two is where Wreck-It Ralph really shines: the pair are hilarious, touching, and at times heartbreaking.

2012’s most adorable animated duo.

As mentioned above, Wreck-It Ralph‘s premise and plot are effective and engaging, and thankfully this goes for the rest of the film too. Voice acting in the movie is top-notch from every single character: there is no weak point, though John C. Reilly (Ralph) and Sarah Silverman (Vanellope) stand out as especially excellent. Visuals are equally impressive, with detailed characters and worlds that tend to go on for as far as you could possibly see. I also love the manner in which the art style changes based on the era of the game the characters are in: the modern Hero’s Duty features hundreds upon hundreds of enemies in a bleak Gears of War style world, while the classic look of Fix-It Felix has sparse environments filled with simple looking characters with choppy animation, just as you’d expect from an older game.

‘Hero’s Duty’ a hilarious satire of the modern FPS

The fact that Disney was able to get so many character cameos from so many different companies is something that I definitely can’t go without mentioning. I don’t want to spoil anything here, but every time one of these recognizable faces showed up on screen, I couldn’t help but smile. There are so many references to different titles that it’s certainly hard to keep up with them all, but I’m sure with each watch of Wreck-It Ralph you’ll pick up on things that you never noticed before.

Bad-Anon is just the tip of the cameo iceberg.

The only real problem that I had with Wreck-It Ralph is that things tend to flow a bit too conventionally. Ralph and Vanellope are both outcasts who form an important, life changing relationship. One of them messes the whole thing up, and it isn’t until the character’s darkest hour that they realize the massive error that they’ve made. Pretty standard stuff, and it slightly drags down an otherwise quite original experience. The film may also be slightly predictable for either extremely intelligent children or anyone over 15, but at its core Wreck-It Ralph is a family film, so I can’t fault it for being easy to understand.

Is Wreck-It Ralph worth your quarters? The answer is undoubtedly yes. Phil Johnston, Jennifer Lee, Rich Moore and the rest of the team have crafted an astonishing, believable, touching world worthy of repeat viewings, and one that will most definitely leave you itching for more. Whatever your age, you’re guaranteed to leave the theater smiling.

Wreck-It Ralph scores a nostalgic 4/5, and is one of the best animated films of the year.

Back in 2009 Jim Dorey of the blog, Marketsaw, claimed that Lucasfilm were already working on Star Wars: Episodes VII, VIII & IX. Well, now that this has turned out to be true the blog has posted even more information from their “source”. While, this could turn out be completely false, it definitely does sound interesting.

According to the source, the new trilogy will be reworked versions of what George Lucas was planning all the way back to when he made the original films. Apparently, this new set of films will follow the same tone of the original trilogy. We will see Luke Skywalker as a key character and apparently Mark Hamill is already signed on as well as many of “the original trilogy cast” with Han Solo, Chewbacca, Princess Leia, C3PO and R2D2 set to appear. One key point that the source revealed was the Empire was definitely not destroyed at the end of Return Of The Jedi.

Another interesting bit of information that was revealed was that Disney has a very interesting short list of directors that includes:

– Steven Speilberg (I shouldn’t have to tell you what he has done)

While he is not the new generation that Lucas talked about taking over, Spielberg has said in the past that he’d like a shot at directing a Star Wars film.

– Neil Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium)

– Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men, Gravity)

– Matthew Vaughn (Kick Ass, First Class)

– Darren Arnofsky (The Fountain, Noah)

– Joss Whedon (Serenity, The Avengers)

But with this one he made sure to point out not to hold your breath as far as directing Episode VII…but that he may actually play another part in it.

So, while this source did indeed reveal three years ago that we would be getting another trilogy…I would definitely file these in the rumor department for the moment. However, I have been proven wrong before. So we’re going to have to wait and see. Remember, 2015 isn’t that far, far away.

On Tuesday the world received the shocking and unexpected news that Lucasfilm (including its subsidiaries) was sold to Disney for a whopping 4.4 billion in cash and stocks. You’ve probably heard this news time and time again, as every single website on the planet has been talking about it constantly for the last 48 hours.

Of course there’s been plenty of coverage on Geekscape too. Aside from the big news, Shawn gave us a few great choices for possible directors, while super fan Eric gave us some fantastic realizations of what we can expect to happen now that the franchise has moved to the house of mouse.

Turns out we were streets ahead on the topic. Nearly two years ago (January of 2011), our writer Witney wrote up some hypothetical reviews on the next three chapters in the Star Wars franchise. The years and titles may be wrong, and who knows how the movies will actually turn out, but in any case they’re definitely a fun read.

Does George Lucas need the $4 billion that he is getting from this Disney deal? Definitely not. Well, it seems that George Lucas is planning to donate the majority of the $4 billion sum that Disney are paying him for LucasFilm to good causes. A spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter that:

“George Lucas has expressed his intention, in the event the deal closes, to donate the majority of the proceeds to his philanthropic endeavors.”

They didn’t have any details as far as where the money will end up, but the writer and director is well known for his substantial donations to causes such as the Film Foundation, Stand Up To Cancer and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Lucas made the following statement this Wednesday:

“For 41 years, the majority of my time and money has been put into the company. As I start a new chapter in my life, it is gratifying that I have the opportunity to devote more time and resources to philanthropy.”

Well played Mr. Lucas.

Gilmore is back and things get pretty rude pretty quickly! Longtime Geekscape contributor Brian Gilmore is back on the show to talk Halloween, the rise of Cosplay and why Jonathan is a massive jerk. In news, all we can talk about is Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm and the Avenger-izing of the X-Men franchise at Fox! What does the future of Star Wars look like? Plus, Gilmore says ‘Wreck It Ralph’ is worth the trip and Jonathan says thanks for all the ‘Doc of the Dead’ love!

Academy Award winning actor Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds, Django Unchained) has begun negotiations to join the cast of Disney’s sequel to The Muppets. If Waltz joins the cast he will play an Interpol inspector in the Europe set follow-up.

The studio is currently also on the hunt for “a Russian femme fatale and a male lead whose intentions are always in question”. The film is set to be helmed by James Bobin, who co-wrote the screenplay with Nicholas Stoller.

So, remember those times when you said George Lucas needs to stop messing with Star Wars films? Well, now he won’t be able. The Walt Disney Company has agreed to acquire Lucasfilm Ltd. from George Lucas, who owns 100% of the company. In addition to this news it’s been revealed that Disney has targeted 2015 for a release date for Star Wars Episode VII. So, tired of George Lucas raping your beloved childhood? Don’t worry about it because he won’t have the chance anymore with the properties now in much better hands.

Disney has long had a close relationship with closely held Lucasfilm and founder George Lucas, including featured attractions at Disney theme parks such as Star Tours at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida.

The full press release:

BURBANK, Calif. & SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Continuing its strategy of delivering exceptional creative content to audiences around the world, The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) has agreed to acquire Lucasfilm Ltd. in a stock and cash transaction. Lucasfilm is 100% owned by Lucasfilm Chairman and Founder, George Lucas.

Under the terms of the agreement and based on the closing price of Disney stock on October 26, 2012, the transaction value is $4.05 billion, with Disney paying approximately half of the consideration in cash and issuing approximately 40 million shares at closing. The final consideration will be subject to customary post-closing balance sheet adjustments.
“Lucasfilm reflects the extraordinary passion, vision, and storytelling of its founder, George Lucas,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company. “This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney’s unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value.”

“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” said George Lucas, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lucasfilm. “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney’s reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products.”

Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Lucasfilm, a leader in entertainment, innovation and technology, including its massively popular and “evergreen” Star Wars franchise and its operating businesses in live action film production, consumer products, animation, visual effects, and audio post production. Disney will also acquire the substantial portfolio of cutting-edge entertainment technologies that have kept audiences enthralled for many years. Lucasfilm, headquartered in San Francisco, operates under the names Lucasfilm Ltd., LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic, and Skywalker Sound, and the present intent is for Lucasfilm employees to remain in their current locations.

Kathleen Kennedy, current Co-Chairman of Lucasfilm, will become President of Lucasfilm, reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Additionally she will serve as the brand manager for Star Wars, working directly with Disney’s global lines of business to build, further integrate, and maximize the value of this global franchise. Ms. Kennedy will serve as executive producer on new Star Warsfeature films, with George Lucas serving as creative consultant. Star Wars Episode 7 is targeted for release in 2015, with more feature films expected to continue the Star Wars saga and grow the franchise well into the future.
The acquisition combines two highly compatible family entertainment brands, and strengthens the long-standing beneficial relationship between them that already includes successful integration of Star Wars content into Disney theme parks in Anaheim, Orlando, Paris and Tokyo.

Driven by a tremendously talented creative team, Lucasfilm’s legendary Star Wars franchise has flourished for more than 35 years, and offers a virtually limitless universe of characters and stories to drive continued feature film releases and franchise growth over the long term. Star Wars resonates with consumers around the world and creates extensive opportunities for Disney to deliver the content across its diverse portfolio of businesses including movies, television, consumer products, games and theme parks. Star Wars feature films have earned a total of $4.4 billion in global box to date, and continued global demand has made Star Wars one of the world’s top product brands, and Lucasfilm a leading product licensor in the United States in 2011. The franchise provides a sustainable source of high quality, branded content with global appeal and is well suited for new business models including digital platforms, putting the acquisition in strong alignment with Disney’s strategic priorities for continued long-term growth.

The Lucasfilm acquisition follows Disney’s very successful acquisitions of Pixar and Marvel, which demonstrated the company’s unique ability to fully develop and expand the financial potential of high quality creative content with compelling characters and storytelling through the application ofinnovative technology and multiplatform distribution on a truly global basis to create maximum value. Adding Lucasfilm to Disney’s portfolio of world class brands significantly enhances the company’s ability to serve consumers with a broad variety of the world’s highest-quality content and to create additional long-term value for our shareholders.

The Boards of Directors of Disney and Lucasfilm have approved the transaction, which is subject to clearance under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act, certain non-United States merger control regulations, and other customary closing conditions. The agreement has been approved by the sole shareholder of Lucasfilm.

Just like the Marvel acquisition, this one caught everyone by surprise. According to Disney’s Robert Iger, there are plans to release a new Star Wars film every 2 – 3 years with Episodes 7 through 9 to be directed by three different directors.

This will be part of Disney’s target slate of 8-10 live action films it releases each year which also includes the Marvel Studios films. With a new Star Wars and The Avengers sequel both hitting theaters, it’s safe to say that Disney will dominate the 2015 box office.

Well, it’s been a few days, so it’s time for more Wreck-It Ralph viral! We’ve already had a look at two of the worlds that we’re set to visit in the film: Ralph’s home game, Fix-it Felix, and racer Sugar Rush.

The latest ad gives us a look at the game Ralph wants to end up in, Hero’s Duty. This world pretty much looks like every space themed shooter since Halo, which has to be a deliberate decision, and of course would be parodying that fact.

I can’t wait for Wreck-It Ralph to hit on November 2nd. The film looks original and hilarious, and I’m really excited to see characters from many different game companies in one place.

Check out the latest viral below, and let us know what you think!

We’re now just a couple weeks away from the launch of the highly anticipated Wreck-It Ralph, and Disney today has given us a look at another one of the worlds we’ll be visiting in the film!

Sugar Rush is a little Mario Kart and a lot of Candy Land. It’s also where Ralph will meet one of the films other main characters, Vanellope.

Watch the retro styled ad below, and get ready for Wreck-It Ralph on November 2nd!

Excited? I sure am!

“Walt Disney Animation Studios and Emmy-winning director Rich Moore (TV’s ‘The Simpsons,’ ‘Futurama’) take moviegoers on a hilarious, arcade-game-hopping journey in ‘Wreck-It Ralph.’ Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly, ‘Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,’ ‘Step Brothers’) is tired of being overshadowed by Fix-It Felix (voice of Jack McBrayer, ’30 Rock’), the ‘good guy’ star of their game who always gets to save the day. But after decades doing the same thing andseeing all the glory go to Felix, Ralph decides he’s tired of playing the role of a bad guy. He takes matters into his own massive hands and sets off on a game-hopping journey across the arcade through every generation of video games to prove he’s got what it takes to be a hero.

On his quest, he meets the tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (voice of Jane Lynch, TV’s ‘Glee’) from the first-person action game Hero’s Duty. But it’s the feisty misfit Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman, ‘The Sarah Silverman Program’) from the candy-coated cart racing game, Sugar Rush, whose world is threatened when Ralph accidentally unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens the entire arcade. Will Ralph realize his dream and save the day before it’s too late? ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ crashes onto the big screen on November 2, 2012, in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.”

So I guess my boy Skrill has finally made it. The EDM and bass junkie producer, Skrillex, has teamed up with Disney to produce a track for the game “Heroes Duty” which the protagonist Ralph ends up in. Take a quick listen below.

Now not only will the electronic producer be lending his musical talent to the film, he is also sharing his likeness. That’s right, Skrillex will in fact make a cameo appearance in Wreck It Ralph during a party scene. The Film’s producer, Clark Spencer, said in a recent interview with Rolling Stones that they recreated Skrillex’s likeness and inserted him as a DJ in the film. There is also a rumor going around he lent his voice to the flick as well.

It appears Disney kind of has a thing for EDM artists. With Daft Punk being in Tron, now Skrillex in Wreck It Ralph, what will they do next? Can we see LCD Soundsystem in the Fantasia remake?

Wow, this is surprising. Stan Lee Media Inc., which keep in mind our beloved Stan is no long any part of, has decided to sue Walt Disney over the rights to the Marvel characters. The company is claiming that Disney doesn’t own the rights to the Marvel characters and they want a piece of the $5.5 billion it says the Disney has made from superhero movies and merchandise based on characters created by Stan Lee.

“Defendant The Walt Disney Company has represented to the public that it, in fact, owns the copyright to these characters as well as to hundreds of other characters created by Stan Lee. Those representations made to the public by The Walt Disney Company are false.”

Pretty interesting that they have just decided to speak up now being that they claim these rights were signed over by Mr. Lee back in 1998. Oh, that’s right. Marvel Studios and Disney just recently had the third highest grossing film of all time and now you guys own the rights to these characters? As Mr. Vanko said in Iron Man 2, “When Blood is in the water the sharks will come”.

Oh, and surprising. They also want full control over anything done with these characters in the future. Well, I hope Stan Lee Media Inc. is prepared to get royally screwed by the mouse because Disney is vicious in court.

Each year around Halloween I watch re-runs of old horror movies and attend fright fests in the area, but next year Pixar Animation Studios has promised something that will probably take the place of Friday the 13th Part 5 on my list. They have announced that for next year’s Halloween season they plan to release a TV special known as Toy Story of Terror.

From what we’ve heard, Toy Story of Terror will fall under the creepy motel/murder mystery genre. It follows the toys as they arrive at a roadside motel where one of them inexplicably disappears and the survivors must solve the mystery before they’re all gone.

It hasn’t been confirmed whether the same actors from Toy Story 1, 2, & 3 will be returning as the voices of Buzz, Woody, and all the other lovable characters from the series franchise, but I will be keeping my fingers crossed.

Disney today released the first clip from the upcoming Wreck-It Ralph.

The movie is just a few weeks away now, and I couldn’t be more excited. Every trailer so far has been hilarious, and this clip is no different. It’s insane to see so many video-game characters from so many different companies coming together for this film!

Check out the clip below! Wreck-It Ralph hits theatres on November 2nd.

Need a refresher on the plot? Here’s the official synopsis:

Wreck-It Ralph (John C. Reilly) longs to be as beloved as his game’s perfect Good Guy, Fix-It Felix (Jack McBrayer). Problem is, nobody loves a Bad Guy. But they do love heroes… so when a modern, first-person shooter game arrives featuring tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (Jane Lynch), Ralph sees it as his ticket to heroism and happiness.

He sneaks into the game with a simple plan—win a medal—but soon wrecks everything, and accidently unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens every game in the arcade. Ralph’s only hope? Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman), a young troublemaking “glitch” from a candy-coated cart racing game, might just be the one to teach Ralph what it means to be a Good Guy. But will he realize he is good enough to become a hero before it’s “Game Over” for the entire arcade?

In a recent interview while doing the press junket rounds for his latest stop motion movie Frankenweenie, Tim Burton said something very telling, but very true “the movies I make that everyone says they love never make much money, and the movies I make that everyone says they hate are always the biggest hits.” While that’s a slight exaggeration, it’s not one by much. I have a feeling Frankenweenie is going to be one of those films that everyone who sees it will love, and yet a large number of moviegoers will ignore it. Certainly early estimates make Frankenweenie a box office disappointment already, despite mostly great reviews. Meanwhile, the two Burton movies that almost everyone I’ve met says they hate (Alice in Wonderland, Planet of the Apes) are two of his most financially successful movies. Alice is the twelfth most successful movie worldwide of all time, hard as it may be to believe. It seems Burton’s best movies are never appreciated fully when they’re released. And while Frankenweenie isn’t the very best Tim Burton movie (there are at least five that are superior) it certainly stands proudly next to them.

It hasn’t been easy admitting to being a Tim Burton fan for the past decade or more. But for the first fifteen or so years of his career, Burton churned out true classics on a regular basis. We take Burton for granted now, but there was a time when almost everything he directed was pretty amazing, and totally unlike anything else the Hollywood studios were producing. Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, the Batman films, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas*, Ed Wood, Mars Attacks and Sleepy Hollow are all movies ranging from good (the latter two) to great (everything else) Certainly Tim Burton isn’t the first director to show how behind the the facade of all-American suburbia, there’s a darker, more twisted and just plain weirder side; that’s been the forte of the likes of directors John Waters and David Lynch for years. But people like Lynch and Waters have always worked on the fringe, barely ever touching mainstream success. Tim Burton on the other hand has taken his own similar outsider sensibilities and signature visual style and spun them into box office gold over and over again. He brought quirkiness to the mainstream in a way almost no director ever has.

And then, came the apes. The 2001 remake of Planet of the Apes was one of the worst pairings of director and material I’d ever seen, and Burton never seemed to really get his groove back after that. He made some truly good movies since then (Big Fish and Sweeney Todd for example) but for the most part, everything else he’s done this past decade has been missing a certain something. It didn’t help that all his output this past decade has been remakes or movies based on some form of previous material. A lot of people have been wondering if we’d ever see a truly classic Tim Burton movie ever again, that perfect mix of the Gothic and macabre with the whimsical and the heartfelt. I’m happy to say Frankenweenie is that movie.

Frankenweenie isn’t the best Tim Burton film by a long shot, (that honor belongs to the two Edwards, Wood and Scissorhands) but it is easily the best movie he’s made in at least a decade, and maybe the purest Tim Burton movie he’s made since Edward Scissorhands over twenty years ago. And it is also maybe his most autobiographical film ever. Both Burton and young Victor Frankenstein grew up in 1950’s cookie cutter suburbia, both were kids who were were a little more obsessed with monster movies than seemingly everyone else, and both had dogs they loved and lost. On top of all that, both had that one special teacher who recognized their oddball genius before anyone else did. Maybe it’s because Frankenweenie is so personal to Burton that it’s so good. Unlike so many of his recent works, like this past summer’s Dark Shadows, this time it felt like he really cared. This time he showed up for more than just a fat paycheck.

This isn’t the first time Burton has told the story of a bull terrier who comes back from the grave. His first film was a live action short by the same name, produced by Disney back in 1984. Deemed too dark for the kiddies, it was shelved until the DVD release of The Nightmare Before Christmas in the 90’s. I always loved Burton’s original live action short of Frankenweenie, but I’ll admit when I first heard he was going to extend it to full length status I dismissed it outright. I just figured Burton had run out of original ideas and now had to extend an old short that was perfectly fine the way it was. I couldn’t be more happy to be wrong. because the feature length version of Frankenweenie is an instant classic.

Frankenweenie has the same basic structure as the original short film; Victor Frankenstein is reclusive elementary school student who doesn’t have any friends except his loyal dog Sparky. When Sparky is accidentally killed when hit by a car, Victor brings his back as only someone with the last name Frankenstein can. But the new film adds a ton of new memorable characters that weren’t in the original short, like science teacher Mr. Rzykruski, voiced by Martin Landau, as well as all the other children in Victor’s school who were totally absent from the original film. All of these elements make this movie feel not like a stretched out short story like I feared, but make the original look like a rough blue print for a superior movie instead. While the original short was an obvious homage to Universal’s classic version of Frankenstein, this new version is an homage to almost all the classic Universal horror films from the 30’s and 40’s, not to mention random other things like Godzilla and even Gremlins. Another welcome added element to the story is a very pro-Science angle, which I wasn’t expecting. With willful ignorance and anti science attitudes being embraced by Americans at alarming levels, I’m glad someone is speaking out against all this institutionalized stupidity.

Another reason to love Frankenweenie is that Burton chose to not just lean on actors  Johnny Deep and Helena Bonham Carter for the zillionth time, and instead chose to utilize actors he’s worked with before, but hasn’t worked with in a long time. Catherine O’Hara, who worked with Burton on Beetlejuice and The Nightmare Before Christmas plays not only Victor’s mom, but also “Weird Girl” a classmate of Victor’s who thinks her cat Mr. Whiskers can predict the future in an unusual way (I won’t spoil it here because it’s just too awesome) Winona Ryder, who got her start starring in Burton films like Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands plays Elsa Van Helsing, the Frankenstein’s neighbor, sorta channeling her character from Beetlejuice, only in claymation form. Martin Short (who starred in Mars Attacks!) plays multiple parts as well, as Victor’s father and the awful mayor of the town Mr. Begermeister, and finally Victor’s Boris Karloff like rival for the science fair prize. And Burton even found a way to sneak in  yet another Christopher Lee cameo, this time in a rather inventive way. I should also mention that Danny Elfman’s score is the best score he’s done in years; he didn’t phone this one in like so much of his recent output.

I honestly don’t really have any bad things to say about Frankenweenie. If you have an affection for the Tim Burton films of yore, chances are you’ll love this movie. If you love old classic horror films, you’ll probably love it just as much. (I find it hilarious that the two best “horror” flicks of 2012 so far have been stop motion family movies, Frankenweenie and the recently released Paranorman) Part of me wishes Tim Burton would retire and let Frankenweenie be his swan song, and end his career on a high note, but that’s not likely to happen. But who knows? Maybe this signals a return to form for Burton, and we’ll get more original projects from him and less rehashes of other people’s material. Certainly his illustrated poetry book The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy has enough oddball characters from his brain to make another potential classic. In the meantime, you should support Frankenweenie this Halloween season, and  help spread the word to everyone on this classic to be. At the very least, see this instead of Hotel Transylvania.

*Yes, I’m aware that The Nightmare Before Christmas is directed by Henry Selick and not Tim Burton. But Burton came up with the concept, the characters, and his name is even in the title; The official title is Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. So sue me, I’m counting it as a Burton film.

Wreck-It Ralph hits theatres on November 2, and I couldn’t be more excited for it! It looks hilarious, obviously even more so if you’re a gamer. There’s some hilarious moments here in the trailer, hopefully the full feature can keep them coming!

Unfamiliar with the title? Disney’s synopsis has this to say about it:

Wreck-It Ralph (voice of Reilly) longs to be as beloved as his game’s perfect Good Guy, Fix-It Felix (voice of McBrayer). Problem is, nobody loves a Bad Guy. But they do love heroes… so when a modern, first-person shooter game arrives featuring tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (voice of Lynch), Ralph sees it as his ticket to heroism and happiness. He sneaks into the game with a simple plan — win a medal — but soon wrecks everything, and accidentally unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens every game in the arcade. Ralph’s only hope? Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Silverman), a young troublemaking “glitch” from a candy-coated cart racing game who might just be the one to teach Ralph what it means to be a Good Guy. But will he realize he is good enough to become a hero before it’s “Game Over” for the entire arcade?

Sources over at Vulture have learned that the first project that Disney has on their agenda under new studio chief Alan Horn will be a new version of the classic from 1991, The Rocketeer. The original movie was directed by Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger)  and dealt with a racing pilot named Cliff Secord (Billy Campbell) who discovers a rocket-pack prototype in his stunt plane, and becomes a metal-mask wearing hero.

The Rocketeer was based off the comic published in 1982 by the now defuncy, Pacific Comics, and was conceived by artist Dave Stevens as an homage to the serial action heroes of the 1930’s. The Rocketeer was also somewhat of a failure at the box office, but was definitely loved by comic book fans. So, will the second time around be a charm or will we see another John Carter incident? The studio will soon be meeting with various writers to come up with a take.
