Briefly: Destiny developer Bungie yesterday released a fantastic new developer diary for their highly anticipated shooter, titled ‘Out Here in the Wild’.

The diary takes us, well, into the wild of Destiny, and shows off many of the environments and weapons we’ll be seeing in the game. If you’re as excited for Destiny as I am, you’ll definitely want to take a look at this.

Watch the diary below, and let us know what you think! Destiny hits PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC sometime in 2014.

It’s Shark Week! So of course we have to have ‘Sharknado’ writer Thunder Levin on the show to talk about the biggest TV hit of the summer! Among the things we’ll be covering: where did the idea come from, why writer Sharknado but not ‘Shark Storm’ and the revelation of Ian Ziering as a big time action hero! Was anyone prepared for the Sharknado craze (could they ever be!?!)? Also, what’s with all of the remakes and comic book adaptations and it is killing the movie going experience? Is VOD the new VHS? What’s the story behind ‘Mutant Vampire Zombies in the Hood’ and how can we bring it back?!?

Briefly: Following yesterday’s new poster (and trailer for today’s trailer), Summit Entertainment has released a new theatrical trailer for this Winter’s Ender’s Game.

The preview features plenty of new footage, even giving us a glimpse of the first Bugger War, but I’m still having the same problem as I did with the previous footage. No, not Harrison Ford sounding bored beyond belief (though there’s that too): the “game” simply looks too real. The (spoiler) emotional impact at the end of the film will simply be non-existent because the viewer will easily forget that it was ever supposed to be a simulation. That revelation is what made the book memorable, and I’m just not sure how things will turn out with this adaptation.

That’s my take anyways, what’s yours? Watch the new trailer below, and let us know if you’re excited! Ender’s Game hits theatres on November 1st!

In the near future, a hostile alien race (called the Formics) have attacked Earth. If not for the legendary heroics of International Fleet Commander, Mazer Rackham (Ben Kingsley), all would have been lost. In preparation for the next attack, the highly esteemed Colonel Graff (Harrison Ford) and the International Military are training only the best young children to find the future Mazer. Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), a shy, but strategically brilliant boy is pulled out of his school to join the elite.

Arriving at Battle School, Ender quickly and easily masters increasingly difficult war games, distinguishing himself and winning respect amongst his peers. Ender is soon ordained by Graff as the military’s next great hope, resulting in his promotion to Command School. Once there, he’s trained by Mazer Rackham, himself, to lead his fellow soldiers into an epic battle that will determine the future of Earth and save the human race.

Briefly: Summit Entertainment has just debuted a new one-sheet for this Winter’s anticipated sci-fi release, Ender’s Game.

The poster features an armor-clad Ender, and a tagline that seems a little too revealing given the plot of the film. Take a look at the image below, and be sure to let us know your thoughts! Summit has also revealed that the next trailer for Ender’s Game will hit the web tomorrow, so if you’re looking forward to the film, be on the lookout!

Briefly: Following the extended, red band trailer released at Comic-Con, Universal Pictures has debuted another theatrical trailer for David Twohy’s highly anticipated Riddick.

While the new preview does feature snippets of new footage, the bulk of it is simply the same footage that we’ve seen over (and over) again. It’s definitely worth a watch, however, and certainly does a good job of reigniting my excitement for the film.

Take a look at the new trailer below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to Riddick!

Prepare for the latest chapter of the groundbreaking saga that began with 2000′s hit sci-fi film Pitch Black and 2004′s The Chronicles of Riddick.

The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered.

The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

Briefly: Is it still news if everyone expected it?

Star Wars Celebration Europe is on in full force, and today a tasty tidbit appeared on StarWars.com: composer John Williams has confirmed his involvement in Star Wars: Episode VII.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy announced the news before debuting a new interview with Williams, who sounds beyond excited to be returning to the Star Wars universe. This is an announcement that fans are going to love, as I can’t even begin to imagine what Star Wars would sound like if composed by anyone else.

Take a look at the short interview below, and let us know what you think of the (not really) news!

Briefly: The anticipated release of David Twohy’s Riddick is fast approaching, and at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Universal Studios unveiled an awesome new motion comic that bridged the gap between 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick and its upcoming sequel.

Universal has just released the motion comic online, and as expected, it’s pretty damn cool. The video clocks in at just over five minutes, and if you have any interest in seeing Riddick when it launches on September 6th, you’re definitely going to want to watch this first.

Watch the Riddick motion comic, titled ‘Blindsided’ below, and let us know if you’re excited!

Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy

Briefly: During this year’s Comic-Con, Universal Pictures released a bloody new trailer for David Twohy’s Riddick.

The new preview features much of what we’ve already seen, just… bloodier and a little more violent. Same opening, same mercenaries, same ol’ Vin Diesel; don’t get me wrong, it’s an awesome trailer for what looks to be an awesome film, but I was hoping for a little more new footage than what we saw.

Take a look at the new trailer below, and let us know what you think! Riddick opens on September 6th!

The 2013 San Diego Comic Con is right around the corner! We’re old veterans here at Geekscape, but that doesn’t mean we’re any less excited when Comic Con rolls around each year! To help us prep, 20 year SDCC veteran Matt Raub is in the studio breaking down the Must Dos and Must Avoids, as well as sharing some of his greatest, and worst, Comic Con memories! Also joining us is Nick Gregorio, longtime Geekscape friend but first time Comic Con attendee! Plus! Sci Fi master Marc Zicree calls in to give us an update on Space Command and give some great Comic Con advice and author Marcus Sakey calls in to geek out with us, talk about his new book ‘Brilliance’ and discuss his insane job hosting The Travel Channel’s ‘Hidden City’! See you in San Diego!

Black Mask Studios has yet another hit on their hands.

Not a fan of wordy reviews or slight spoilers? Here’s a quick take: Ballistic ranks among the best premiere issues that I have read in a long time. The book is violent, irreverent, and completely absurd, and I can’t recall the last time I’ve experienced such a fantastic mixture of those three things.

Years in the makingBallistic‘s infectious, humorous script comes from writer Adam Egypt Mortimer, while the superbly detailed, oft-disturbing artwork (right from the very first panel) has been created by HAPPY! and Transmetropolitan alum Darick Robertson.

Ballistic-001_001_large-800x1214

Ballistic‘s memorable opening begins with a unique issue: bad dudes have bad things to do, and it’s too freaking hot. Naturally they call in Butch: an HVAC repair man with dreams of becoming a criminal, whose best (and possibly only) friend is his talking, living gun. The dialogue shared between Butch and his firearm are some of the standout pages of the book; they speak as though they’re best friends, they act as though they simply couldn’t function without each other, and this relationship takes Ballistic to a completely new level.

That gun isn’t the only typically inanimate object that’s alive in Ballistic… every piece of technology is. This leads to some original problems (and solutions) throughout the course of the book, and gives Robertson’s artwork a very particular and distinguished feel. From pulling an optic nerve from an A/C unit, to a building with spines instead of pillars, all the way to an attempted bank robbery (which fails because the gun can’t fire due to having an overage of drugs in its system), Ballistic‘s slick writing and phenomenal art are both to be celebrated.

Ballistic-001_002_large-800x1214

Ballistic is set to hit shelves tomorrow (Wednesday, July 10th). The five issue miniseries began with a bang (in the biggest sense of the word), and I’m unbelievably excited to learn what comes next. If you can pick up one comic this week, make it this one! Ballistic scores a clear 5/5; this book is bound to sell out fast, so you may find it advantageous to call your LCS and add Ballistic to your pull list.

If you’re in the Los Angeles area, Ballistic writer Adam Egypt Mortimer will appear at Meltdown Comics tomorrow (July 10th) at 7:30PM for a signing. It’s a great opportunity to meet one of the creators of one of the best new miniseries’ of 2013. I wish I could be there, but unfortunately, I don’t fly down for a few more days!

Following the new poster unveiled just a few days back, Vin Diesel has just debuted the first TV spot for Riddick.

The spot is light on plot, and very heavy on action. We get a great look at some of the mercenaries hunting our anti-hero, as well as some of the creatures he’ll be facing in the film.

Riddick hits theatres and IMAX on September 6th, and looks absolutely fantastic. Watch the first TV spot below, and let us know if you’re excited!

Briefly: Sci-Fi fans, you’re favourite alien drama is sticking around for at least one more year.

That’s right! Noah Wyle may have led some of us to believe that the series was coming to a close with his ominous quote a few days back: “As opposed to some of the other seasons where we’ve ended on a cliffhanger. This [finale] has more of a sense of closure, and completion.” But you can rest easy, as Falling Skies has just been renewed for a fourth season.

The Steven Spielberg produced drama actually ranks as the #1 drama on basic cable, so in that sense, the renewal is no surprise. The ten episode fourth season will premiere in Summer 2014!

Are you keeping up with the show? What have you thought of Season 3 so far?

Following the IMAX poster revealed just last week, Universal has just unveiled a new poster for their upcoming sci-fi, Riddick.

The new one-sheet is a simple image of the man himself atop an absolutely badass tagline: ‘Survival Is His Revenge’. Of course, it reveals nothing new about the still-mysterious film, but simply lets us know that Riddick‘s release is fast approaching.

Take a look at the new poster below, and let us know if you’re excited for the film!

It’s time to talk giant robots fighting Kaiju monsters! ‘Pacific Rim’ is two weeks away from hitting theaters and this week we’ve got ‘Pacific Rim’s screenwriter Travis Beacham in studio to talk about the upcoming film, working with Guillermo Del Toro and the comic book hardback prequel ‘Pacific Rim: Tales From Year Zero’! Travis and I talk about the bringing Pacific Rim to theaters, the joy of creating the comic book and the current trend of remakes versus original ideas. Does Pacific Rim feel like a breathe of fresh air or a Hollywood risk? Also, what was it like growing up as a geek and probably the best Star Wars Episode 1 story of all time! Plus! We say goodbye to Richard Matheson, one of the greatest horror writers of all time!

Also, don’t miss our very own Allie Hanley’s original interview with Travis about ‘Pacific Rim’ and his upcoming ‘Ballistic City’!

The world has just lost a legend.

Richard Matheson, author of classics such as I Am Legend, A Stir of EchoesWhat Dreams May Come, and countless others, died on Sunday at 87.

Details of his passing are still largely unknown. Mathesons daughter, Ali, wrote the following of her father’s death:

“My beloved father passed away yesterday at home surrounded by the people and things he loved…he was funny, brilliant, loving, generous, kind, creative, and the most wonderful father ever…I miss you and love you forever Pop and I know you are now happy and healthy in a beautiful place full of love and joy you always knew was there…”

We can say without a doubt that the horror and sci-fi genres would be vastly different without Matheson’s work. I Am Legend remains one of the most terrifying and heartbreaking stories that I’ve ever read, and I don’t think that’s ever going to change. It’s a tale that I reread often, and one that’s impossible to get through without finding myself covered in goosebumps.

The film and television worlds have been just as blessed my Matheson’s craft. Film’s like Real SteelNight of the Living Dead, The Omega Man, and many episodes of The Twilight Zone would never have existed without him.

Richard, you will be missed. Feel free to share your memories of Matheson’s work below.

Just a few days after a new batch of images was releasedRiddick star Vin Diesel has revealed an IMAX poster for the film.

David Twohy’s highly anticipated follow-up to 2009’s The Chronicles of Riddick is finally just a few months away from release, and Collider today revealed 15 awesome new images from the film.

The images are a mixture of stills and production photos, and definitely give us a better look at that sun-scorched planet that Riddick will wake up on. Take a look at the stills below, and let us know what you think! Riddick hits theatres on September 6th!

The release of Universal’s anticipated Riddick is fast approaching, and the studio has just released a new trailer for the film. Universal is certainly not taking the Man of Steel approach with this one, which had much of the movie (and its surprises) revealed long before the film ever released.

Riddick looks very cool, but the coolest thing about it may be just how much we don’t know about the project. Today’s trailer features a bunch of new footage, but still manages to keep much of the film under wraps.

Bungie today released a very cool new trailer for their upcoming sic-fi game, Destiny. Mixing live-action and CG, the preview was directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man), and stars the always-impressive Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad) as a father telling the story of Destiny to his child.

The most exciting aspect to me isn’t the preview itself, but what is revealed at the end of it: we’ll get out first taste of Destiny‘s gameplay at Sony’s E3 press conference on June 10th. I’ve already marked my calendar.

After the cliffhanger ending to Saturday’s Doctor Who season (or series… whatever) finale, I can’t even begin to imagine the fan uproar had BBC decided not to continue the show. It’s a good thing then, that BBC today confirmed a continuation into 2014, and even more new content before the end of this year.

No information has been released about the next season, but I’d expect most of the lead cast to be returning. As for 2013, on November 23rd a new 3D special will air, starring Matt Smith, Jenna Coleman, David Tennant, and John Hurt , celebrating the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who (that is a ridiculous amount of time). A Christmas special has also been announced, but no further information has been revealed.

Lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat will of course be returning for next year’s Doctor Who offering. What do you hope to see during the season? What did you think of Saturday’s finale?

Finally.

We’ve seen plenty of images and even a brief teaser for the film, but today, just four months before the Riddick‘s release, a full length trailer has been revealed.

Defiance fans, you’re getting another season!

The series premiere was the second most watched episode in Syfy’s history, and ratings have been strong ever since, so this awesome news isn’t the least bit surprising.

Season two will consist of 13 episodes, with production beginning this August. I (disappointingly) haven’t started the series (or tie-in game) yet, but based on viewer reception and the previews that I’ve seen, it should be a fun ride.

Read the full press release below, and let us know what you think of the show!

New York, NY – May 10, 2013 – Syfy has renewed its groundbreaking series Defiance, giving a 13-episode second season order to the critically acclaimed hit that has catapulted Syfy to the top cable drama spot in the time period among adults 18-49, adults 25-54 and total viewers for three consecutive Mondays.  Season two of Defiance, produced by Universal Cable Productions, will begin production in Toronto in August for a 2014 premiere, returning as the anchor of Syfy’s Powerful Monday’s block of primetime original series.

Redefining the transmedia experience, Defiance has distinguished itself with an unprecedented partnership between Syfy and Trion Worlds, by creating the first-ever true convergence of television and online gaming.  To date, the game has garnered more than 1 million registered accounts while making gaming history as the first online open world shooter to launch on three platforms simultaneously.  As the collaboration between show and game continue into a second season, players will have the opportunity to further influence the world of Defiance.

Kevin Murphy (Desperate Housewives, Caprica, Hellcats) resumes his role as executive producer and showrunner. Smallville’s Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin return as executive producers for season two and Michael Taylor serves as consulting producer.

“Bringing the rich world of Defiance to life has been in incredible team effort.  We couldn’t ask for better partners than Kevin Murphy, his amazing cast and crew, and Trion Worlds,” said Mark Stern, President of Original Content for Syfy and Co-Head of Original Content for UCP. “We can’t wait to see where they take us in the second season.”

Set in the near future, Defiance features an exotically transformed planet Earth, its landscapes permanently altered following the sudden – and tumultuous – arrival of seven unique alien races.  In this somewhat unknown and unpredictable landscape, the richly diverse, newly-formed civilization of humans and aliens must learn to co-exist peacefully.  Each week, viewers follow an immersive character drama set in the boom-town of Defiance, which sits atop the ruins of St. Louis, Missouri, while in the game, players will experience the new frontier of the San Francisco Bay area.

The audience for its April 15 premiere was the second largest series premiere in the network’s history among adults 18-49, making it the biggest in nearly nine years in that coveted demographic, based on Live +7 Data. The premiere also delivered almost 4 million viewers (3,834,000) and has quickly become Syfy’s highest-rated original series this year in adults 18-49, adults 25-54 and total viewers.  It has also received unprecedented attention as a transmedia event in partnership with Trion Worlds’ MMO game.  Airing Mondays at 9pm, Defiance stars Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Stephanie Leonidas, Tony Curran, Jaime Murray, Graham Greene and Mia Kirshner.

The most controversial trailer of the year is finally here! Nope, it’s not controversial because of its content, but simply because the source material’s creator is… well, a crazy asshole.

Check out the trailer below, and let us know what you think. Ender’s Game stars Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, Abigail Breslin, and plenty of others, and hits theatres on November 1st!

Yesterday, Paramount released seven new character posters for the highly anticipated release of Star Trek Into Darkness. Most of the Enterprise crew was present, but both Scotty and Chekov were noticeably absent from the images. Fans of the two were beginning to wonder what would come of the characters, as neither have been prominently featured during the film’s ongoing marketing campaign.

Fans are in luck. Paramount today released two new posters, spotlighting our missing crew members. Check them out below, and let us know what you think! Star Trek Into Darkness hits theatres on May 17th!

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes ‘Star Trek Into Darkness.’ When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

This is going to make a lot of money.

We all (well, most of us) shat our pants in excitement when Disney revealed J.J. Abrams as the director of Star Wars: Episode VII. We also knew full well that the House of Mouse was planning spinoff titles, with a possibility of each film focussing on a specific character.

We knew the what, but aside from Episode VII‘s 2015 release date, we had no idea when to expect this ball to start rolling. As Disney revealed today at CinemaCon, they’re planning to kick things off pretty rapidly.

After Star Wars: Episode VII‘s launch in Summer 2015, the company will release a new film in the Star Wars franchise every single year. You read that right. 2016, 2017, 2018, and onward, a new Star Wars film will be released. Now, not all of these will be continuations of the main series; after Episode VII will come a spinoff, then Episode VIII, another spinoff, rinse and repeat.

The galaxy far, far away is about to get a lot more crowded. Are you excited?

I can't even begin to imagine what an image like this would look like in five years.

Following the release of yesterday’s phenomenal trailer, a new batch of images from Neil Blomkamp’s Elysium have made their way online. Neil Blomkamp had his feature-length directorial debut with 2009’s District 9, and was long attached to helm the now-defunt Halo film.

Elysium looks fantastic, and I can’t wait to see what Blomkamp and his team have to show us. Check out the images below, and let us know what you think. Elysium hits theatres on August 9th!

In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.
