Marvel and Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’ is a 13 episode masterpiece. From the incredible performances to the perfectly picked classic Daredevil moments from the past 40 years, it changes the game for comic book adaptations. But what did you miss? How is this going to shape things to come for the great Marvel Cinematic Universe? Luckily, Ian Kerner is here to help me make sense of what I argue is the greatest thing Marvel has produced yet!

Briefly: Daredevil is just around the corner, A.K.A. Jessica Jones is well into production, and today Marvel announced that Cheo Hodari Coker has joined Luke Cage as series’ showrunner, and also that the series will debut in 2016.

Cheo has produced popular shows like Ray Donovan and Southland, for which he also won the 2013 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Writing for a Dramatic Series.

Here’s the full release, straight from Marvel:

Netflix & Marvel Television announced today that Cheo Hodari Coker will serve as executive producer and showrunner of the anticipated series, “Marvel’s Luke Cage.” Coker is writing the first two episodes of the series that will premiere in 2016, everywhere that Netflix is available.

Most recently, Coker served as a co-executive producer on the second season of “Ray Donovan,” and prior to that was a supervising producer on the critically-acclaimed, fourth season of the drama “SouthLAnd.” Coker was a part of the “SouthLAnd” team that earned the show a 2012 Peabody Award. Coker also garnered a 2013 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Writing for a Dramatic Series for his work on that show. Coker’s feature film credits include Fox Searchlight’s rap biopic “Notorious.” He authored the book “Unbelievable: The Life, Death, and Afterlife of The Notorious B.I.G.” as well. Coker started his writing career in journalism and was a staff writer at the Los Angeles Times and contributed to VIBE, Rolling Stone, Essence, among other publications. He is a graduate of Stanford University.

It was previously announced that Mike Colter (“The Good Wife,” “American Horror Story: Coven”) will play the charismatic lead character, Luke Cage, in the series.

“Marvel’s Luke Cage” is produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios for Netflix.

It was revealed back in December that Colter (pictured below) would play Luke Cage, who will first appear in this year’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones.

Way back in the beginning of February we talked about the rumors floating around about Netflix doing a live action Legend of Zelda show in the style of Game of Thrones. WELL, turns out the rumors were faker than Kim Kardashian.

In an interview with TIME magazine, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata put the rumors to rest.

As of now, I have nothing new to share with you in regard to the use of our IPs for any TV shows or films, but I can at least confirm that the article in question is not based on correct information.

Looks like we’re stuck with the cartoon from the 80’s. You know our writer Juan Carlos is going to be disappointed.

“I’m a little technologically inept,” she tells me, referencing her lack of social media presence.

“And you were in a sci-fi movie?” I ask her, bewildered.

“I know, right? I’m the worst geek ever.” A ball of enthusiasm and energy, Colorado-native Jessica Rothe stars in the now-buzzing indie sci-fi movie Parallels, available now for streaming on Netflix and for iTunes and other VOD platforms March 31. She also does not have a Twitter account.

I need to mention a little off-topic how much I love Geekscape and our community. My review for the film gave the site massive traffic and our comments activity had never been higher. You guys even started your own petition to get the pilot-turned-movie back on track to series. I happily signed it, and I hope we can continue to explore the bizarre world Parallels created.

While director Christopher Leone has told us directly that Parallels might continue and is working hard behind the scenes to ensure that it does, if Parallels remain just as a film then what a film we have. Among the characters we follow for its runtime, there stands Beatrix. Her world has passed her by, and just as she seems to get her feet planted, away she’s tossed into different Earths before she even had the chance to say otherwise.

Awhile back I sat down with Jessica Rothe about the film, her hopes for the potential series, and how she could be a sci-fi writer in the making.

Parallels_KeyArt

Let’s kick this off right and get to know you, Jessica Rothe, better. What do you geek over?

Jessica: I love, love love reading. My boyfriend recently introduced me to graphic novels, which I had never really read before. I’ve been reading the Saga series and things like that.

Very cool.

Jessica: I can totally begin to geek out over that. But I’ll read anything from To Kill a Mockingbird to 1984 and I’ll definitely geek out over some Bob’s Burgers as well.

So let’s talk about Parallels. What can you tell me about Beatrix in your own words? Adulthood has kind of started without her. Is there anything you found in her that you could relate?

Jessica: I think that I relate to Beatrix in the way that she’s extremely hard-working and compassionate person who, just along the way, things haven’t quite gone to plan but she’s learned to adapt and roll with the punches. And she’s finally worked so hard and achieved in getting into college, and not just college but into Harvard (Author’s note: It was actually Princeton, but I don’t think it’s that crucial, do you?) and then her life takes an unexpected twist and she has to kind of figure out how that fits into everything.

I can definitely relate to working really hard towards something and then having the world kind of say, “Oh, just kidding! You’re gonna go in a different direction.” And kind of having to figure out how to use that to your advantage. And yeah, kind of that reconnecting with a long lost sibling and learning how to be a family again, I think it’s a really interesting journey.

In your interpretation, how do you think Beatrice feels about her relationships to her companions? What do you think her dynamic with her estranged brother is really like? How do you think she sees Harold?

Jessica: With Ronan, I think it’s kind of like when you go away to college and you come back and you’re this brand new person but everybody at home is treating you exactly the same. And that’s really frustrating, because you want them to see you and respect you as this new person. [So] Ronan comes back and still really views Beatrix as his little sister, but Beatrix has been the one to grow and stayed home to hold down the fort. So there’s an element of frustration and anger and feeling abandoned. But I think she’s also very curious who this new person is, this brother that she hasn’t seen in such a long time.

And with Harold, [laughs] I think in this world Beatrix has such great affection for him and love for him, but I think that he’s that guy she’s never even considered. I think that every time that her brother so clearly sees that he’s [Harold] interested, I think it’s the kind of situation where it’s, like “Oh, no no no, he’s just my friend!” She tends to nearly justify his interest in her as just being friends, whether it’s because she isn’t ready to look at their relationship as more than that or just that she’s clueless in a way that girls can be. [laughs]

So Parallels might go to series, possibly. Is that true?

Jessica: Yeah, which would be so exciting! For me, what’s so exciting about [Parallels] becoming a series is that I think the audience gets a taste of what’s in store for them, like three-fourths into the pilot when we begin to see versions of themselves pop up and you kind of get that … sick little joy [from them] in wondering how many different versions of themselves they’re gonna run into and the conundrums that the characters are gonna fall into.

I know that the viewing that I saw when that started happening, the audience really became engaged … because it’s so exciting to realize the potential for what it could mean. How big this world could be.

I think with infinite Earths, it’s gotta be pretty huge.

Jessica: Yeah! [laughs]

Parallels_1

About Polly, Constance Wu’s character. Do you think Beatrix trusts her in any way?

Jessica: I think Beatrix is pretty wary of her. I think Beatrix is a trusting person and wants to trust her, but I think that there’s just something in her gut that she’s not quite sure how she feels about her. [laughs] And she knows something is a little off because I think Beatrix is also really intuitive. I think the difference between her and Ronan is Ronan has an impulse and acts upon it, but Beatrix is more likely to kind of sit back and watch, and kind of determine how she’s going to proceed.

So I think with Polly, she’s probably the most likely to pick up on the oddities that keep on happening and kind of tracking it. And I mean, I don’t know because who knows where the show will go, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Beatrix was the one who figures it out unless Harold, like, walks in on them accidentally.

That’d be a hell of a moment.

Jessica: Yeah! [laughs]

Should Parallels go to series, what kind of adventures would you want Beatrix to go through? The character arcs in the film were kind of unfinished because of the cliffhanger ending, but where do you think Beatrix will end up in the theoretical first season?

Jessica: Oh my goodness. That’s an amazing question! I really hope for Beatrix that she finds peace with whatever they learn about their parents and that there’s some sort of closure for her about their family. I really think that so much of what’s motivated her for her whole life has been trying to repair the damage that was caused when the family broke apart, and finding that wholeness would really feel good to her.

I also hope that she, in one of the Earths, she gets to go to Harvard. She kind of gets to fulfill her dreams in that way and gets to feel like she has a place in the universe where she belongs. That’s what school represents to her, it’s feeling like she has a purpose and feels like she’s going somewhere. She has a use. If this journey gives her that, then I think that’s a really exciting element for her.

I’m also really excited to see how all of the characters continue to adapt. The fact that they’re consistently changing, I think that’s one of the most exciting things about the show. It’s that you put four characters who you begin to know very well in various situations and that you watch them have to figure it out. And whether they fail or triumph, and kind of all of the wonderful and horrible and funny and heartbreaking things that happen along the way with that.

Parallels_2

Fun question: What kind of alternate realities would you like to see? What kind of Earth would you like to see? Like, “I wish XYZ happened instead.”

Jessica: Oh my gosh. I mean, I think an Earth — and to keep it just one answer, would be an Earth where slavery and people using each other wasn’t ever thought of.

Oh, wow.

Jessica: An Earth where people were just equal on all terms. Although with human nature I don’t even think that’s possible and I don’t know how it’d work out. But I think a fun one, I think it would be interesting to see one where humans decided to live underwater.

Wow, so like an Atlantis?

Jessica: All of the communities, underwater. That would just be completely different.

You should be a science-fiction writer.

Jessica: [laughs] Maybe you can help me. If they pick up the show you can give me a writing credit.

While we hope Parallels succeeds so we can see more of you and the rest, can you tell us any future projects you have in the works? I saw your IMDb, you have like five movies coming out.

Jessica: I do! A film I did two years ago with my really, really wonderful friend Hannah Murray, it’s screening in LA [soon]. We were just at the TIFF New Wave festival where the film premiered, and so I get to see Hannah again. As for the rest of them, I have no idea when they’re gonna come out. The Preppy Connection, which was an amazing, amazing film I did with Thomas Mann, Lucy Fry and Logan Huffman is going to come out [soon], I think they’re looking to finish the edit this month.

The crazy thing is, I come from a theatre background and I’m so used to knowing what my timeline is. You perform for four months and then you’re done, but with film I do what I do on set and then it’s out of my hands. So I have no idea when I’m going to see it! [laughs] But I’ve been very blessed to work on many different projects with wonderful people.

Parallels is now streaming on Netflix and will be available for other VOD platforms March 31.

Briefly: Following yesterday’s fantastic full trailer, Marvel has revealed six of the supporting cast members for next month’s Daredevil.

Announced actors include Person of Interest‘s Rob Morgan as Turk Barrett, a smalltime criminal in Hell’s Kitchen, while Dexter‘s Matt Gerald will play Melvin Potter, a machinist caught between a rock and a hard place.

Under the Kingpin’s umbrella, we’ve got Falling Skies‘ Peter Shinkoda as Nobu, a Japanese businessman with an agenda all his own; Law and Order: SVU‘s Wai Ching Ho as Madame Gao, a powerful woman running her own trade, Camp‘s Nikolai Nikolaeff and Grimm‘s Gideon Emery as Vladimir and Anatoly, two Russian brothers looking to forge new names for themselves in America.

Marvel’s Head of TV Jeph Loeb says that “With an already tremendous cast, these six actors help to fully flesh out Matt Murdock’s world and give life to Hell’s Kitchen. We’ve been blessed to work with such amazing actors on this series to create a truly remarkable first season.”

Daredevil, of course, “follows the journey of Matt Murdock, who was blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, now fighting against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the super hero Daredevil in modern day Hell’s Kitchen, New York City.”

There is exactly one month left until Marvel’s Daredevil premieres on Netflix. As most of the world has finished House of Cards (except me) and working their way through The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (except me, again, guys my work commute sucks), Daredevil is creeping right around the corner. Like the real Daredevil. And now the full-length trailer is now online.

Unlike the previous teasers, this gives us the best look at the series overall to date. I was already stoked and prepared to binge on its premiere weekend, but now I wish the premiere could happen like right freaking now.

Of note is the location: Hell’s Kitchen. I work about a couple blocks away from Hell’s Kitchen, it’s about a twenty minute walk. Hell’s Kitchen today isn’t really a crime-ridden hell hole that it was until just maybe ten years ago. It’s interesting that in this Marvel Cinematic Universe, Hell’s Kitchen remains the dark place it used to be known for. Perhaps the Battle of New York in The Avengers drove the wealthy upper middle class away? I hope there’s at least some explanation.

A small reminder: Marvel’s Daredevil premieres the same weekend of Game of Thrones and will be at least week two into Mad Men‘s last leg. Prepare to watch TV all weekend.

Also, for funsies, compare this new series trailer with the one from the 2003 theatrical film. There’s no doubt that a decade plus change can highlight a change in cultural sensibilities, but it remains startling just how different the recent past is.

Marvel’s Daredevil premieres April 10th. I know you’re ready.

Briefly: Daredevil looks so damned good, doesn’t it? From the first images to the bad-ass first trailer, and now the just-released Matt Murdock character poster, it’s clear that were in for a treat when the Netflix / Marvel collaboration launches on April 10th.

“Marvel’s Daredevil” follows the journey of Matt Murdock, who was blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, now fighting against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the super hero Daredevil in modern day Hell’s Kitchen, New York City.

First, here’s the new poster in motion:

And here’s the still version for you to stare at:

DD

My body is ready, and April 10th can’t come soon enough! How excited are you for Daredevil‘s launch?

For starters, I want to acknowledge that yes, we already know that all Marvel television properties are a part of the blockbuster Marvel Cinematic Universe. You don’t need to tell us twice.

But a teaser image posted on the official Twitter account for Marvel’s Daredevil (set to premiere on Netflix this April) hints at a more direct connection than we would have expected.

Carl Creel is the Absorbing Man, who appeared in early season two of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., portrayed by Brian Patrick Wade. This is entirely speculation, but is Wade reprising his role? Or is his S.H.I.E.L.D. character the child of this Carl Creel, also played by Wade? Is it time travel? Just a coinky-dink? The crux of this is just who the hell is fighting poppa Daredevil.

My guess is the one that makes the most sense: it’s Carl Creel Sr. in that poster, because it’s an old poster. If it were new, it would be brandished with “Like us on Facebook” or some garbage. It has to be circa twenty years or a little less than the time period Daredevil actually takes place.

Which on that note, can we speculate why there’s hard crime in Hell’s Kitchen in 2015? The second wave of gentrification has changed Hell’s Kitchen, and it isn’t the dangerous neighborhood it was when the Daredevil comic books were first being published. I’m curious to see Daredevil almost entirely because of this: How different is the Marvel Universe’s New York to ours?

Daredevil premieres April 10 on Netflix, which is just two days before Game of Thrones. You are not going anywhere that weekend.

Briefly: I had no idea that this existed until its first trailer dropped a few weeks back, but since then I’ve been insanely excited for Netflix’s own Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

The show comes from 30 Rock executive producers Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, and its a “new comedy series starring Ellie Kemper (“The Office,” “Bridesmaids”) as a woman who is rescued from a doomsday cult and starts life over as a nanny for an Upper East Side socialite (Jane Krakowski from “30 Rock”) in New York City. Armed with just a backpack, light-up sneakers and a couple way-past-due library books, she takes on a world she didn’t think even existed anymore.”

It looks hilarious, and it looks freaking adorable. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt just got a new poster, so take a look below, and let us know if you’ll be binging this one when it releases on March 6th.

Hold on to your replica Master Swords for a little while longer, Geekscapists. A Legend of Zelda live-action series might be coming to Netflix.

From The Wall Street Journal:

The video streaming service is in the early stages of developing a live action series based on “Zelda,” about an ordinary boy named Link who must rescue a princess named Zelda and save a fantasy world called Hyrule, said a person familiar with the matter. As it seeks writers to work on the show, Netflix is describing it as “Game of Thrones” for a family audience, this person said.

As of right now Netflix has not commented, so don’t celebrate just yet.

Still, the fact that there are rumblings even remote to this kind of project is amazing. We talk often about how geeks have become the mainstream, but I’m still reminded on a daily basis how wide the gap still is between geek and mainstream cultures. Even when Game of Thrones is the hottest show on TV and the Marvel movies make more money than third-world GDPs, you would be surprised how wide the gap between the cultures still remains.

But back to a Zelda series, this is just so BOSS. I’m not the biggest Legend of Zelda fan, but I would totally watch a TV series based on the games. I’m familiar with them enough and I know the series’s mythology is pretty wonky, so there’s no harm in creating a continuity unique to just the show.

I love the idea of a family-friendly fantasy series. Not everything has to be grim, depressing, and aiming to be “realistic,” whatever that fuck that means. We might be raising a generation of pessimists with the amount of depressing television out right now.

Sit tight as we hope to learn more about a LIVE-ACTION Legend of Zelda series. This wouldn’t be the first TV series based on a video game, as far as I recall, but we explore the movie option so much we forget TV is a viable option. And we’re living in its golden age!

Briefly: Well, after that mysterious and enticing teaser trailer from yesterday morning, Marvel and Netflix has just debuted the full teaser trailer for Aprils Daredevil.

It’s way, way better than the Ant-Man trailer, and (as we knew long ago) it’s going to be 13-episodes of the man without fear goodness. Guess who’s not going to work today?

The production values here look high, I dig the way Charlie Cox presents himself as Matt Murdock, and I love seeing that Frank Miller inspired black suit in motion. It’s going to be very interesting to see how Marvel handles an actual superhero in a TV show, and I cannot wait for April 10th.

Take a look at the teaser below, and let us know what you think! Daredevil hits Netflix on April 10th.

“Marvel’s Daredevil” follows the journey of Matt Murdock, who was blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, now fighting against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the super hero Daredevil in modern day Hell’s Kitchen, New York City.

Briefly: Marvel and Netflix have just debuted a promising 15-second teaser for April’s 13-episode Daredevil series, noting that a full trailer for the series will premiere online tomorrow.

In the teaser, we get to hear Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock for the first time, and he’s sounding pretty stellar. Take a look at the teaser below, and check back tomorrow for the full trailer.

I feel like I’m looking forward to Daredevil and Marvel’s other Netflix projects more than any of the MCU films this year. What are your thoughts?

“Marvel’s Daredevil” follows the journey of Matt Murdock, who was blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, now fighting against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the super hero Daredevil in modern day Hell’s Kitchen, New York City.

Briefly: Following the additions of Rachael Taylor and David Tennant last week, The Matrix alum Carrie-Anne Moss has joined Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones in a yet unnamed role.

The recurring role will see Moss as  “a no-nonsense woman who could prove a powerful ally to Jessica…if Jessica doesn’t completely alienate her first.”

Marvel’s Head of Television Jeph Loeb stated that “Carrie-Anne has proven her ability to play complex characters with deep and layered inner lives. Her interaction with Jessica Jones will be one of the many highlights of the series.”

Are you looking forward to the 13-episode series? Are you satisfied with the casting choices so far? Sound out below!

Moss

Briefly: We’ve got Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, David Tennant as Kilgrave, and now Grey’s Anatomy and Crisis star Rachael Taylor has been cast as Patsy Walker in Marvel / Netflix’s AKA Jessica Jones.

Her official character description reads that “Trish is a syndicated radio talk show host, former model and child TV star known to her adoring fans as “Patsy” Walker. As Jessica Jones’ closest friend, Trish helps her embark on the most dangerous case of Jessica’s career.” Comic fans will also know her as Hellcat.

Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Head of Television, stated that “Rachael’s ability to embody a character that must balance both the darker and lighter elements of our series will provide a perfect emotional anchor for Jessica Jones. Rachael blew us away with her grounded, humanizing take on Trish, adding yet another layer to the complex, emotional story we’re telling with this series.”

How do you feel about the casting choice? Anyone else you’d rather see in the role? Sound out below!

Briefly: So I had no idea that this existed until today, and now I can’t wait to watch the entire thing in one sitting.

It’s called Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, it’s from 30 Rock executive producers Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, and it’s a “new comedy series starring Ellie Kemper (“The Office,” “Bridesmaids”) as a woman who is rescued from a doomsday cult and starts life over as a nanny for an Upper East Side socialite (Jane Krakowski from “30 Rock”) in New York City. Armed with just a backpack, light-up sneakers and a couple way-past-due library books, she takes on a world she didn’t think even existed anymore.”

It looks super adorable, and super funny, and a little bit like a modern day Blast from the Past. Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think! The entire first season hits Netflix on March 6th!

http://youtu.be/mNKEKlXY3Z4

From Comic Book Resources: Marvel’s Daredevil will premiere exclusively on Netflix on April 10, 2015. Starting at 12:01 AM Pacific time that day, all 13 one-hour episodes will be readily available. In a post-House of Cards era, we know the deal already.

In addition, Marvel Studios has released a neat little motion poster with a static version (seen below).

The showrunners have likened Daredevil to The Wire, which is a ballsy statement for sure. Hell’s Kitchen in 2015 is a different place than it was when Daredevil first fought crime there in the comic books, so it’s really fascinating to me how they’re trying to depict a gritty city corner in the larger, cosmic Marvel Universe. I for one am looking forward to this show just to see how they address this paradox.

Will you be watching? Wait, of course you are. Never mind.

daredevilposter-52939

Briefly: We got our first look at Charlie Cox as Marvel/Netflix’s Daredevil all the way back at NYCC, and this week EW gave us a new look at Matt Murdock in both lawyer and superhero forms.

EW also notes that Cox will don the classic red suit at some point during the series (now shut up, haters), but as we know, he’ll begin the story in the Frank Miller inspired duds.

Marvel’s TV Chief Jeph Loeb notes that “There aren’t going to be people flying through the sky; there are no magic hammers. We’ve always approached this as a crime drama first, superhero show second,” While showrunner Steven S. DeKnight adds “It’s a little grittier and edgier than Marvel has gone before, but we’re not looking to push it to extreme violence or gratuitous nudity.”

However things turn out, at this point we could not be more excited. Take a look at the two new images below, and let us know what you think. Daredevil will hit Netflix in 2015.

Heads up! Deadline has reported Marvel Studios have casted Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, the titular character to one of their upcoming Netflix-exclusive series.

From Deadline:

Spearheaded by Melissa Rosenberg, the 13-episode drama — the second in a four-series Netflix-Marvel deal — centers on Jessica Jones, a superhero suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, which leads to her hanging up her costume and opening her own detective agency, where she ends up helping people and assisting other superheroes.

After the beloved Don’t Trust The B—- in Apt. 23 as well as an NBC sitcom (set in space!) she was to star was cancelled before it even aired, Krysten Ritter finally has the break her fans believe she deserves. I can’t wait to see her as Jessica Jones!

Additionally, Deadline has reported that Mike Colter (from The Following) is in the lead to play Luke Cage, also the titular character of a Netflix-exclusive series from Marvel.

Great news. My excitement for these Marvel shows just went into overdrive.

Briefly: Netflix has finally announced the long-awaited premiere date of the next season of House of Cards. The company will release its series’ third season on February 27th, 2015, and that day cannot freaking come soon enough.

A very, very short teaser accompanied the announcement, so take a look below, and let us know if you’re excited for the Underwood’s return!

Briefly: Lots of good stuff coming out of NYCC today. We saw the first trailer for Sony’s Powersthe first few minutes of The Walking Dead premiere, and now we have a great look at Marvel’s new Daredevil.

It’s totally taking a note from Frank Miller’s The Man Without Fear, and that’s totally awesome.

Here’s Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock:

“Marvel’s Daredevil” follows the journey of Matt Murdock, who was blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, now fighting against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the super hero Daredevil in modern day Hell’s Kitchen, New York City.

Marvel’s first original series on Netflix is Executive Produced by series Showrunner Steven S. DeKnight (“Spartacus,” “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer,” “Angel”) and Drew Goddard (“Cabin in the Woods,” “Lost,” “Buffy The Vampire Slayer,” in addition to writing the first two episodes of “Marvel’s Daredevil”), along with Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Smallville,” “Heroes”).

Briefly: Following the casting of Rosario Dawson less than a week ago, Marvel has just announced the next addition to Daredevil.

Here’s what Marvel had to say:

Marvel and Netflix are proud to announce that acclaimed actor Elden Henson has joined “Marvel’s Daredevil,” an all-new 13-episode series premiering on Netflix in 2015.

With a diverse body of acclaimed work, including the “Hunger Games” and “Mighty Ducks” franchises, Elden Henson will play Foggy Nelson, Matt Murdock’s best friend and legal partner. In a town full of crime and corruption, Foggy’s friendship to the community and passion for improving it have made him a friend to its many residents from all walks of life.

Henson joins Charlie Cox (previously announced as Matt Murdock), Vincent D’Onofrio (previously announced as Wilson Fisk) and Rosario Dawson in the critically-lauded cast of “Marvel’s Daredevil.”

Marvel’s head of TV, Jeph Loeb stated that “Elden plays one of the most important characters in the world of ‘Marvel’s Daredevil,’ and we’re thrilled to see Foggy Nelson brought to life by such an incredibly talented actor. He perfectly captures the heart and soul of this series, bringing an added resonance to Matt Murdock’s fight against the injustice in their great city.

“Marvel’s Daredevil” follows the journey of Matt Murdock, who was blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, now fighting against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the super hero Daredevil in modern day Hell’s Kitchen, New York City.

Briefly: Following the reveal of Charlie Cox as Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio as The Kingpin, Marvel has officially announced that Rosario Dawson has joined the Daredevil series for Netflix.

Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Head of Television said that “Rosario Dawson is one the most charismatic, talented and powerful actresses in Hollywood, so she was always at the top of our list for ‘Marvel’s Daredevil. Her role in the series is absolutely critical to Matt Murdock’s journey to become the hero we know as Daredevil.”

She’s no stranger to comic book adaptations, portraying Gail in both Sin City films and voicing Artemis in the 2009 animated Wonder Woman film.

The release reads that Dawson “will play a dedicated young woman whose quest to heal the wounds of Hell’s Kitchen brings Matt Murdock unexpectedly crashing into her life, while her own journey forever alters the course of his battle against the injustices of this broken city.”

Briefly: Following the casting of Charlie Cox as Daredevil a few weeks back, Marvel and Netflix have officially revealed the actor who will portray the Kingpin.

It’s Full Metal Jacket‘s Vincent D’Onofrio.

Daredevil‘s new showrunner, Steven S. DeKnight (Drew Goddard left the role last month) made the announcement via twitter:

Are you happy with the choice? Is there anyone else you’d rather see in the role? Be sure to let us know! Daredevil will premiere on Netflix in 2015!

Orange is the New Black has a new trailer, and it’s a spoof of the Arrested Development intro. It even has Ron Howard doing the voiceover!

As a huge huge HUGE AD fan, I love the idea, but I started watching Orange last season and have to say it has nothing in common with AD. But then, the new trailer makes me wonder if maybe I’m wrong.

The new season of Orange is the New Black will be available on Netflix starting June 6th. And yes, you can binge watch it.

Briefly: Former showrunner Drew Goddard left the project this past weekend (leaving it in the capable hands of Steven S. DeKnight), but Marvel and Netflix’s Daredevil has just found its star.

Stardust and Boardwalk Empire actor Charlie Cox has been cast as Matt Murdock in the series, which will span 13 episodes and premiere on Netflix in 2015.

Netflix and Marvel are also developing series’ based on Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist, but Daredevil will be the first to launch. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as we learn more.

What are your thoughts on Cox in the role? Is there an actor you’d rather have seen in the series? Ben Affleck, right? Sound out below!

Briefly: Just yesterday word broke out that director Edgar Wright had left Marvel’s Ant-Man over creative differences, and now it appears that Marvel has lost another director.

Latino-Review was the first to report the news, which was later confirmed by Variety, that Cabin in the Woods director Drew Goddard had departed the upcoming Netflix original Daredevil series. Goddard was set to write and direct the first episode in the miniseries, and also act as its showrunner. Instead, he’ll focus his attention on Sony’s Sinister Six film, which he is also set to write and direct.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer writer and Spartacus showrunner Steven S. DeKnight has taken the reigns on the project, which will premiere on Netflix in 2015.

How do you feel about Goddard’s departure? Are you still looking forward to the series? Sound out below!

Briefly: So it turns out that Drew Goddard is a pretty busy guy.

Back in December, Sony announced plans to release both Venom and Sinister Six spinoffs of The Amazing Spider-Man franchise. A five person team of Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner, Ed Solomon, and Drew Goddard formed a “brain trust” to continue the Amazing Spider-Man franchise with a consistent tone (and maintain the connections between each film).

Goddard was already set to write the announced Sinister Six spinoff, and as THR has reported, it now looks like he’ll be directing it too.

It’s interesting to see Drew Goddard’s name here, as the talented writer/director was recently tapped to write (and maybe direct) the Daredevil series for Netflix. In any case, it certainly raises my hopes for a film about six villains that haven’t been introduced yet.

Are you down for the spinoff, or would you rather see the main The Amazing Spider-Man series better establish itself first

Briefly: We haven’t heard too much news from the Marvel / Netflix deal since its announcement back in November (aside from Drew Goddard’s involvement in the Daredevil series). Today however, the city of New York has revealed that each series (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage, if you’ve forgotten) will be filmed in the real-life big apple.

The announcement is set to create over 3000 jobs in the area, with filming set to begin this Summer.

You can take a look at the entire press release below for more info, and be sure to let us know if you’re excited for this authentic NYC experience! We’ll have more info on each series for you as soon as it’s available!

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, The Walt Disney Company, Marvel and Netflix Inc. today announced that Marvel’s landmark live-action television series, which will bring Marvel’s ‘flawed heroes of Hell’s Kitchen’ characters to Netflix, the world’s leading Internet TV network, will principally film in New York State. Produced by Marvel Television, in association with ABC Television Studios, this groundbreaking series is Marvel’s most ambitious foray yet into live-action television storytelling and represents the largest film or television production project commitment in New York State history.

Filming is set to begin in the Summer 2014 and will create at least three thousand jobs in New York State including up to 400 full time jobs. The project will include nearly 60 one-hour episodes focused on the 4 Defenders characters: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.

“New York is where the entertainment industry started, and this unprecedented commitment from Disney and Marvel is further evidence that we’re bringing it back bigger and better than ever before,” said Governor Cuomo. “And when the entertainment industry thrives, it fuels dozens of other industries and businesses. The competition for these projects is fierce and Disney could have chosen to film these shows anywhere, but they knew that shooting in New York means getting to work with the best in world. These shows bring New York’s superheroes home where they belong – along with hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars in new business.”

“Since 2008 Disney has directly contributed almost half a billion dollars to New York’s economy through television and film production, along with approximately 9,000 jobs for New Yorkers,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and CEO, The Walt Disney Company. “The Governor’s policies make this great state a more affordable and attractive location, opening the door for even greater economic investment and job creation for New Yorkers. Our Marvel series for Netflix will inject millions directly into the local economy and create hundreds of new jobs.”

“We thank the Governor and the great state of New York for helping us create the ultimate backdrop to this epic series. Setting our production in New York City truly underscores the authenticity and excitement we plan to bring to The Defenders and their ‘flawed heroes of Hell’s Kitchen’ stories,” said Alan Fine, President, Marvel Entertainment.

Last November, Disney and Netflix announced an unprecedented deal for Marvel TV to bring multiple original series of live-action adventures of four of Marvel’s most popular characters exclusively to the world’s leading Internet TV Network beginning in 2015. This pioneering agreement calls for Marvel to develop four serialized programs totaling 52 one-hour episodes culminating in a four to eight episode mini-series programming event. Led by a series focused on “Daredevil,” followed by “Jessica Jones,” “Iron Fist” and “Luke Cage,” the epic will unfold over multiple years of original programming, taking viewers deep into the gritty world of heroes and villains of Hell’s Kitchen, New York. Netflix has committed to a minimum of four, thirteen episodes series and a mini-series event in which the Marvel characters from the first four series team up as “The Defenders,” much like “The Avengers.”

This new original TV deal follows last year’s landmark movie distribution deal through which, beginning with 2016 theatrically released feature films, Netflix will be the exclusive U.S. subscription television service for first-run, live-action and animated movies from the Walt Disney Studios, including titles from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Disneynature and Lucasfilm.

“The Defenders are classic New York characters; smart, resourceful and tough enough to always stand up for what’s right,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix Chief Content Officer. “We’re delighted they’re coming to life on their home turf thanks to Governor Cuomo and his team.”

When Governor Cuomo took office in 2011, he made the attraction of the film and television production and post-production industries, and jobs and the economic impact they bring with them, a key part of his overall strategy to grow New York State’s economy. Since that time, he has signed into law several important changes to both programs to make New York more competitive in this global marketplace, and the results have been significant. Both programs enjoyed record-breaking years in 2013, bringing billions of dollars in new spending and thousands of jobs into the Empire State. The stability provided by multiyear funding has particularly encouraged the development of television series production work, like the new Marvel series, as well as long term investments in infrastructure, all of which creates thousands of jobs directly and indirectly related to the actual productions themselves.
