Following the clever ant-sized teaser and poster, the first full teaser trailer for Ant-Man is finally, finally, finally here!

The teaser shows off the first footage of Paul Rudd in the sweet-looking suit, and while it doesn’t reveal a ton of plot, we get a good idea of Lang’s intentions, and also get to see just how good of a salesman Michael Douglas’s Hank Pym can be. Serious, that monologue though.

The teaser features a far more serious tone than I’d expected, especially with Step Brothers director Adam McKay at the helm (and not to mention the fact that it stars Paul Rudd), but after the hilarious, heartbreaking blast that was Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, I’m ready for something a little more serious (though hopefully just as different). After all of the controversy surrounding the film over the last year, it’s great to finally see some footage, and it’s even better that the footage is freakin’ rad.

Take a look at the teaser below, and let us know what you think! Ant-Man hits theatres on July 17th, 2015!

“Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang (Rudd) must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Douglas), protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world”

On my way back from San Diego Comic-Con this year, I hopped on a plane to Newark Liberty. Sitting in first class? Paul freaking Rudd. My first thought was, I just came from one of the biggest pop culture and entertainment conventions where some information about Marvel’s Ant-Man was revealed, and here he is on this plane! My second thought was he had nice hair.

And that hair looks even nicer on this swell cover from Entertainment Weekly!

The campaign for this movie is super obvious, but it’s still cute. It’s playing to the quirky sensibility of the character, although could they really do anything like that for a guy like Iron Man? The Hulk? Should they sell torn-up magazines or issues stained with martinis?

If these ant-sized reveals aren’t enough, check out the official poster below!

Oh that’s just precious.

Don’t forget, a full Ant-Man teaser airs tonight with Agent Carter! Who else is stoked for that series, by the way? Here’s another look — a human-sized look — at the teaser, in case your attention span is also ant-sized.

When the Sony hack attacks by North Korea evolved from a surreal, schadenfreude-filled incident to a watershed moment where the effects on the American psyche, speech, and capitalist practices will be measured in the years to come, my laptop gave me the middle finger and stopped working. It was like, totally the best time for me to not write.

Now that I have ol’ trusty back from Apple, I have some catching up to do. I’ll be writing about the coming hangover concerning this attack and what I personally believe may be the start of the world’s first Cyber War, but for now I can’t help but dwell on some actual movie business news coming from the Sony leaks. Thankfully this has nothing to do with insulting a celebrity.

According to Comic Book Resources, Marvel and Sony have reached or are inches away from finalizing a deal concerning New York’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Should they happen with these proposed plans, Spider-Man will be absorbed into the Marvel universe with a stand-alone movie with Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods) eyed to direct. Spider-Man will then be involved fully with Captain America: Civil War and The Avengers: Infinity War — Part 1.

This news differs from earlier reports that Sony and Marvel were merely talking about getting Spider-Man involved with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, somehow it seems more and more like a possibility.

Here’s how it will go down. If the deal is reached — and this is an if — Sony will co-finance 25% of Captain America: Civil War. Marvel will then pony up 25% for the next solo Spider-Man film, and Sony will be allowed to use two (2!) Marvel Studios characters and continue the events of Civil War. From there, Spider-Man will appear in Infnity War — Part 1 in 2018 and a second solo film (would this be the fourth solo film in total?) in 2019.

From Comic Book Resources:

Sony asked for approval over the costume, script (but only the parts specifically involving Spider-Man), and casting, with said actor required to sign a three-picture deal or more. The way this part of the document is worded makes it sound very much like a collaboration rather than one studio having more control than the other. They do however point out that Kevin Feige must serve as a producer, and if for some reason he leaves Marvel, they would be allowed to select his replacement. They also want Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach to be given executive producer credits, and state that it would be pre-agreed that Drew Goddard both writes and directs the first movie.

There are some caveats too. Namely, if any Marvel movies using Spider-Man fail to make their projected release date, Sony would be paid a whopping $100 million and the deal terminated. That’s kind of harsh.

On the business side of things, if any of the Marvel movies Spider-Man is included in misses their release date, Sony would be paid damages of $100 million, and the deal would be terminated. Sony have only three years and nine months to start pre-production before the rights revert, and Captain America: Civil War would reset the clock on this period. Sony also asked for Marvel’s help in ensuring that the “D Machine” would have to be accessible for Spider-Man’s solo movies in regards to their TV channels, radio networks, theme parks, and more. The deal would be announced at a press event by both studios on a mutually agreed upon date.

I wish I could get away with calling more directors “__ Machine.” Quentin Tarantino the Q Machine. Spike Lee the S Machine. Jonathan London the J Machine. They all sound like bad ’70s villains. (Sorry, Jonathan!)

Comic Book Resources makes it clear this stuff comes from internal documents and appears to be more of a gameplan from Sony than any actual final deal. We of Geekscape reiterate that none of this is finalized or confirmed. Considering the level of international urgency Sony have found themselves in I doubt they’re thinking much about a teenaged superhero in red and blue spandex anyway.

What if Kim Jong-Un actually doesn’t care about The Interview and hacked Sony just to pressure them so Spider-Man can join The Avengers? I would, as kids today put it, can’t even.

We were so, so close.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the recent hacker attacks against Sony (speculatively as a protest for The Interview, I think it’s protesting Annie) revealed emails exchanged between the higher-ups of Sony and Marvel Studios about possibly joining together to create a new Spider-Man trilogy. This plan also would have involved Spider-Man taking part in Captain America: Civil War.

Based on the conversations, Sony would have maintained “creative control” along with marketing and distribution, while Marvel Studios would bear the burden of producing all three new movies. We have an obsession with trilogies in these things. Obviously, these plans fell through.

From WSJ:

The e-mails reveal extensive discussions between executives at Sony and Marvel owner Walt Disney, all the way up to their respective chief executives Kaz Hirai and Robert Iger.

In an Oct. 30 e-mail, Sony Pictures president Doug Belgrad tells Ms. Pascal about a potential scenario that would see Marvel produce a new trilogy of Spider-Man movies while Sony retains “creative control, marketing and distribution.”

In a separate e-mail, Ms. Pascal tells a business partner that Marvel wanted to include Spider-Man in its planned third “Captain America” movie.

Equally as interesting, Sony hasn’t given up on Spider-Man, nor have they given up revamping their property. Instead of just going ahead with The Amazing Spider-Man 3, they seem to be taking the New York webslinger in a totally different (but not far-out) direction: Putting Spider-Man into the realm of action comedy.

From WSJ:

As of late November, executives were planning a “Spidey summit” for January to discuss future plans.  Among projects in development are an animated Spider-Man comedy that would be produced by Chris Miller and Phil Lord, the team behind “22 Jump Street” and “The Lego Movie,” as well as previously disclosed Spider-Man spin-offs focused on villain team Sinister Six, super-foe Venom, and women from the webslinger’s life.

So from Sony, we may get a cartoon Spider-Man film meant for laughs, and then a (presumably) a dark summer action film involving a ton of villains. Um, OK.

The part where Spider-Man was almost in Captain America: Civil War intrigues me the most, because of exactly what you think. Civil War. Spider-Man was the red dot in the crosshairs of that Marvel event, and to have Spider-Man be a part of it in the film would be one step closer to making the film faithful to that series. In some ways I’m happy the film is diverting (as far as we know) from that series, but it’s the roads less traveled that always seem appealing.

Regardless of Civil War, I’m still mad Sony and Marvel couldn’t get together. In high school and college there were friends you wanted to set up with other friends because you think they would be a cute couple. I’m not ready to give up on these two singles-ready-to-mingle yet.

Briefly: These are some exciting times for comic book movies. Marvel has decided to answer DC’s move of announcing all of their upcoming films through the year 2020 with their own long term announcements for Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Here’s what’s been announced, as well as the release dates:

Yep, Avengers: Infinity War will be split into TWO parts. This is going to be HUGE!

I am super excited for these films and the introduction of these new characters into the MCU!

So, let the fantasy casting begin! Who do you think should play your favorite Marvel characters? Let us know in the comments section below!

Briefly: Following the film’s first clip from earlier this week, Marvel has debuted another new featurette for November’s Thor: The Dark World.

The video spotlights just what Loki’s been up to since The Avengers (being stuck in an Asgardian cell, mostly), and the interesting dynamic of Thor needing his evil adopted brother’s help.

I can’t wait to finally see the film. The serious tone that Thor: The Dark World looks to take is one that I think Iron Man 3 desperately needed. In any case, take a look at the featurette below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the film! Thor: The Dark World hits theatres on November 8th!

Marvel Studios’ “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

Briefly: Following yesterday’s cool new featurette, Marvel has officially debuted the first clip from next month’s anticipated Thor: The Dark World.

The clip is an expansion of the Thor / Loki conversation that we’ve seen in almost every trailer, but it’s very cool to see the entire exchange. Remember that Loki nearly destroyed New York (or the planet), so as Loki states, Thor must be truly desperate asking him for help.

Briefly: Following the new TV spots from earlier this week, Marvel has debuted a new featurette for the highly anticipated Thor: The Dark World.

The featurette takes us to some of the locations used during filming, and shows us that this is definitely Thor on a much larger scale. It’s an awesome look into Marvel’s next phase two film, which seems to be looking better and better with each piece of new marketing.

Take a look at the video below, and let us know what you think! Thor: The Dark World opens on November 8th!

Briefly: Marvel today debuted two new TV spots for their highly anticipated Thor: The Dark World.

The spots don’t seem to feature any new footage, but do recut what we’ve already seen into an epic new order. Seriously, the new Thor looks awesome, and as I’ve said before, it looks like everything that Iron Man 3 should have been.

Take a look at the new spots below, and let us know what you think! Thor: The Dark World hits theatres on November 8th.

Briefly: Doesn’t Thor: The Dark World look awesome? Honestly, I can’t wait for the thing, especially after the massive (understatement) disappointment that was Iron Man 3. Seriously, a silly buddy cop film has no place in a post-Avengers world.

Thor: The Dark World looks exactly like what Iron Man 3 should have been. It’s serious, people are scared, their planet was nearly destroyed, and everyone now knows that aliens exist. I’m hopeful that this could be the Phase Two film that we all were hoping for the first time around.

Marvel today debuted two new character posters for the film. The first spotlights a powerful looking Odin, while the second focusses in on Loki, while his shattered prison is displayed in the background.

Briefly: Following the new stills from just a few days back, Marvel today debuted two new character posters for November’s Thor: The Dark World.

One image features Thor doing what he does best (looking sexy with Mjölnir… duh), while the other showcases a very sly looking Loki (what is he up to).

As I’ve said before, I’m beyond excited for Thor: The Dark World. The film looks to drop the overused humour from the first Thor, and instead appears to take on a much more serious tone. A tone that’s very fitting for a post-Avengers world, and a tone that the overly-silly Iron Man 3 should have had. Briefly: With just a few days to go until the next issue of Empire hits newsstands, 16 new stills from the Thor: The Dark World have debuted on the magazine’s official website.

Thor: The Dark World producer Craig Kyle explains the film further, stating “When the Bifrost was broken at the end of the first film, Odin had to conjure a lot of dark energy and go through a lot of personal sacrifice to try and get his son back to Earth. And it was a one-shot deal. If Thor didn’t succeed, without the Tesseract he couldn’t have got back again. And in our film, finally the Bifrost has been rebuilt, but during that time, when the cops were largely cut off from the rest of the universe, you had miscreants that came in from outside the Nine Realms, pillaging and destroying and causing havoc. So that’s what our guys have been doing now – trying to put all these fires out across the Nine Realms.”

Briefly: Marvel Studios today debuted a new trailer for this Winter’s phase two film, Thor: The Dark World.

The preview is chock-full of new footage, including plenty of new Loki action. We also get a much better look at the film’s plot from this trailer, which is definitely one of the better Marvel film previews that I’ve ever seen.

Thor: The Dark World looks to drop the silly, overused humour from the first Thor film, and should be a much more serious feature than phase two opener Iron Man 3. This is exactly how the world should be acting after an alien attack, and I couldn’t be more excited to see where the movie goes.

Take a look at the new trailer below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to it! Thor: The Dark World hits theatres on November 8th!

Briefly: Marvel Studios today released a new poster for Thor: The Dark World.

The image is fairly standard poster fare, spotlighting Chris Hemsworth clutching his beloved Natalie Portman, while secondary characters look somber in the background (aside from Loki, who looks like he’s having a blast). It reveals little of what we’ll see in the feature, but it certainly does its job in looking bad-ass.

Briefly: The ever-growing cast of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy just added one more.

First rumoured months ago, John C. Reilly has officially signed on for the film. He’ll be playing Rhomann Dey, leader of the Nova Corps. Reilly joins Benicio Del Toro, Karen Gillan, Glenn Close, Zoe Saldana, Lee Pace, and plenty of others! The film is set to hit theatres on August 1st, 2014.

What do you think of the casting choice? This ensemble really seems to be shaping up nicely, and I can’t wait to see some footage from this film.

It’s been a big week for James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Last Wednesday, Glenn Close joined the project as the head of the Nova Corps, and just two days ago, Doctor Who‘s Karen Gillan signed on as a lead villain.

Today, Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro signed on for a leading role. No details were revealed about who he’ll be playing, but according to Deadline (who broke the news), he has signed a multi-picture deal for a character that will have a big part in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thanos? Who knows!

What do you think of the news? Guardians of the Galaxy also stars Zoe Saldana, Chriss Pratt, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, and plenty of others, and will hit theatres on August 1st, 2014!

Just days after Glenn Close joined the project as the head of the Nova Corps, James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy has added another to its ranks.

Karen Gillan, most recognized for her five-year stint on BBC’s Doctor Who, has signed onto the film. Few details about her role have been revealed, but it is known that she’ll play the main villain in the feature.

Guardians of the Galaxy also stars Zoe Saldana, Chriss Pratt, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Glenn Close, and plenty of others. The film will hit theatres on August 1st, 2014. Let us know what you think of the latest addition to the cast, and if you’re looking forward to the film!

The ever-growing cast of James Gunn’s Gaurdians of the Galaxy just revealed its latest addition.

Golden Globe winner Glenn Close has been tapped to play the head of Nova Corps in the film, which is set to start production in just a few months. Deadline broke the news, and reports that Close’s character is the “closest thing to the one that Samuel L. Jackson plays in Marvel’s Avengers movie.”

In my opinion, this is an absolutely fantastic addition to the already impressive cast. What do you think? Guardians of the Galaxy also stars Zoe Saldana, Chris Pratt, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, and more, and is set to hit theatres on August 1st, 2014!

In this week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly, there’s quite a bit of coverage for Marvel’s upcoming “Phase Two” films. Earlier today we saw some new details and concept art for Captain America: The Winter Soldier and now we have some new concept from James Gunn’s Guardians Of The Galaxy. If you know Peter Quill’s backstory, you know definitely know what scene this is. If you don’t know the backstory, you should probably go pick up a copy of Guardians Of The Galaxy #0.1 and get caught up. Kevin Fiege talked about the highly-anticipated release, which included confirmation that actress Zoe Saldana has signed on as the film’s female lead:

GOTG-concept-1

“Guardians takes place within the continuity of the [other movies] but it’s on the other side of the universe. We’ve always wanted to do a space movie. I’m obsessed with Star Wars, I’m obsessed with Star Trek.”

“It’s a huge story on a massive canvas,” Feige says. “We can take it to all those crazy places as long as all the characters respond in an emotionally truthful way. That’s why I believe people are going to respond to Chris Pratt and to an alien Zoë Saldana—because they did respond to that one time before [with Avatar]. And to a tree and a raccoon who, it is certainly our intention, will steal the whole movie.”

In the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, Marvel’s Kevin Fiege dropped some new details regarding the highly-anticipated Russ Brothers’ Captain America: The Winter Soldier as well as revealing some brand new concept art for the filme. Fiege told the magazine:

“We weren’t going back to World War II. Cap cannot travel in time. So while Tony can go home to Malibu and Thor goes up to Asgard and Hulk can sort of ride the rails, Cap was stuck. So Cap does stay with S.H.I.E.L.D. because he has nowhere else to go. But he’s not necessarily comfortable there. And just as he’s given permission to let go of the past and to focus on the modern world, a ghost comes up. With the Greatest Generation in World World II, there’s a tendency to reflect on that period and say, ‘Things were black and white back then, and now it’s hard to know who the bad guys are.’ ‘We wanted to play on that a little with Cap being uncomfortable with the way S.H.I.E.L.D., and in particular Nick Fury, operates.”

Worried that with his contract coming to an end it would mean that Robert Downey Jr. would be hanging up his helmet? It’s definitely going to be hard to see any other actor fill the role after he finally does but don’t worry just yet. RDJ appeared on The Daily Show and revealed to the audience that he is currently renegotiating his contract at the moment with Marvel which means we may see a few more outings with him as the armored avenger in the future. Check out the interview below as well as a short clip from the film.

Remember last week when Joss Whedon hinted at two new characters (“a brother/sister act”) that would be appearing in the upcoming sequel to The Avengers? Well, Entertainment Weekly report that their upcoming issue will feature an extensive look at Marvel Studios upcoming “Phase Two” films as well as going on to confirm what many had earlier speculated:

Ultimate Comics X-Men 7

“Some online rumors turn out to be true, however. A source confirms to EW that the twin characters Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch will be joining The Avengers 2, which Whedon hinted at recently when he said he was writing a brother-sister duo into the movie. Feige maintains a poker face on that scoop, saying only: “I’m not confirming or denying. The draft could change six months from now.”

The rights to these two characters were revealed awhile back to be up to whichever studio used theme first between Marvel and Fox and it appears Marvel got to them first. Will they be mutants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or have the origins of their powers altered a bit for the film universe? We’re going to have to wait and find out but this is definitely very exciting news.

Actress Hayley Atwell, who portrayed Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger, recently made a semi-cryptic statement in an interview that seemingly implied that a new Marvel: One-Shot starring the character was on the way. At the Iron Man 3 red carpet premiere last night, Marvel Studios co-President Louis D’Esposito has confirmed the rumors of, stating that he had just directed a brand new One-Shot that would focus on a strong female character.

This new short will make its debut at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Last year D’Esposito’s previous One-Shot Item 47 debuted off site for a select group (that I was lucky enough to be among) through viral marketing, so you may want to keep your eyes out while walking around the area. Atwell will also reprise the role for next year’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Keep an eye for more updates to pop up over the new few months.

While attending the Hollywood red carpet premiere of Shane Black’s Iron Man 3, Yahoo Movies caught up with Joss Whedon and a took a few minutes to discuss the highly-anticipated 2015 sequel to The Avengers.

“I have actually finished a draft, we’re in a very good place. It’s going really well, eventually somebody will explain to me that it’s not. But I’ve been writing, meeting with actors, and we’re starting to storyboard and all the preliminary processes. This is the part where it’s all still fun. It’s an evolution, and that goes on all through shooting and it never stops. I’ve done enough shows and movies to be comfortable with that. You do come to a point where we all agree …‘Oh, I’ve got these two characters, two of my favorite characters from the comic books; a brother/sister act. They’re in the movie, that’s exciting.’ You lock certain things in. But then there’s a certain fluidity when you’re working with Robert [Downey Jr.]. He’s going to want to do something new on the day, and you’re going to want him to, because it’s going to be funny. So you always keep yourself open. I try not to think of it as topping The Avengers, I try to think of this as its own movie.”

“And by the way, Shane [Black] not helping! Iron Man 3 not helping! I see this and said, ‘Aw, man, he really got it right!’ The pressure continues! When Tony sees another superhero, he increases his swagger. Tony, he sees Thor, and he says, ‘Yeah, I got a suit of muscles that big. I invented it! Oh, you can pick up a hammer? You’re so special!’ He sees it as a challenge! He loves it.”

The most interesting point of this conversation was the two new character additions that Whedon mentioned. If he’s talking about actual siblings, could we see the inclusion of Wanda & Pietro Maximoff, better known as Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver? It’s already been revealed that their rights are up in the air and whichever studio, Fox or Marvel, uses them first gets first dibs. However, there are a handful of other characters that this could be implying as well. Ah, the many possibilities!

Marvel Studios and director James Gunn are currently in full swing putting together the cast of Guardians Of The Galaxy. Just yesterday it was revealed that Ophelia Lovibond had joined the film’s cast and now it’s been revealed that actor Lee Pace, who was actually up for the lead role of Peter Quill at one point, has entered into final negotiations to play the villain in the upcoming Phase Two film.

There’s currently no word at the moment which cosmic character Pace will be playing but speculation has already begun that he could be playing the character Korvac in the upcoming space-epic. We should begin to learn more as we near production starting this June.

A big space epic featuring an unlikely cast of Marvel characters, including Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Groot and Rocket Raccoon, who must team up in order to defeat a cosmic force of epic proportions.
