Briefly: Sad news for fans of amazing television, Community has been cancelled.

It was news that I wasn’t expecting to hear, as creator Dan Harmon, as well as the cast and crew have been tweeting optimistic thoughts for the last few weeks.

We sure hope that the Sony-owned series can find a home on another network (or Netflix or Hulu), but for now, Greendale is closed… permanently.

We got more of this series than fans ever thought we would, and an exceptional fifth season after Dan Harmon’s triumphant return, so it’s really a bittersweet announcement, as it’s one we expected years ago. We’ll be sure to fill you in on any news of a pickup, but for now let us know your favourite episode in the comments below!

Briefly: MTV has just debuted a new red band trailer for A Million Ways To Die In The West.

It’s probably one of the most NSFW trailers that I’ve ever seen, and it’s absolutely hilarious. Seriously.

A Million Ways To Die In The West stars Seth MacFarlane (who also directed, produced, and co-wrote the film), Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson, Amanda Seyfried, Giovanni Ribisi, Sarah Silverman and Neil Patrick Harris. Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think! The film hits theatres on May 30th!

Seth MacFarlane directs, produces, co-writes and plays the role of the cowardly
sheep farmer Albert in A Million Ways to Die in the West. After Albert backs out
of a gunfight, his fickle girlfriend leaves him for another man. When a mysterious
and beautiful woman rides into town, she helps him find his courage and they begin
to fall in love. But when her husband, a notorious outlaw, arrives seeking revenge,
the farmer must put his newfound courage to the test.

Briefly: Sony has just debuted a final, hilarious red band trailer for 22 Jump Street, which hits theatres on June 13th.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller return to direct the sequel to the 2012 film (which was a lot funnier than I was expecting, and ended up being one of the most hilarious films of the year). 22 Jump Street takes Jenko and Schmidt to college, and I cannot wait to see what happens when they get there.

Take a look at the new trailer below, and let us know what you think!

After making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) when they go deep undercover at a local college. But when Jenko meets a kindred spirit on the football team, and Schmidt infiltrates the bohemian art major scene, they begin to question their partnership.  Now they don’t have to just crack the case – they have to figure out if they can have a mature relationship. If these two overgrown adolescents can grow from freshmen into real men, college might be the best thing that ever happened to them.

Briefly: Machinima is on a roll this week! Just a few days ago they released Game World, and awesome new short by the always-talented Joe Miale, and today they’ve debuted Counterspell, a hilarious animated comedy set in an old-school video game universe!

CounterSpell follows two dungeon mini-bosses who choose to leave their boss fight instead of facing their scripted deaths at the hands of four RPG players. They embark on a misguided evil adventure that will likely doom the world and turn the RPG genre on its head. It’s a ridiculously simple tale, with planty of preposterously funny content through its duration.

The series, which was created by some of the biggest names in the YouTube and Machinima universes, (including YouTube heavyweights MLGhwnt (220,000+ subs), iHasCupquake (youtube.com/iHasCupquake, 1,300.000+ subs), ImmortalHD (youtube.com/ImmortalHDFilms, 650,000+ subs), and Slyfox (youtube.com/xXSlyFoxHoundXx, 1,180,000+ subs), launched its first two episodes earlier today. You can check them out in full below, and we’ll be sure to share more as they’re released!

Be sure to let us know what you think of Counterspell so far!

The comedy world suffered a huge loss today as Harold Ramis, better known as Egon to all fans of the 80s, died of autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis after long battles with his health.

Egon-Spengler-blog480

The star of Ghostbusters and Stripes also helped create Caddyshack and wrote films like Animal House, Groundhog Day and Meatballs.

He was also director of some amazing classics like National Lampoon’s Vacation, and was a part of the making of such films as Back to School, Armed and Dangerous and Analyze This.

Briefly: Universal Pictures today debuted the very first trailer for Seth MacFarlane’s Ted follow-up, A Million Ways To Die In The West.

I’d actually not heard of the film until today, but as is usually the case with Seth MacFarlane (and was definitely the case with most of Ted), this one looks great, and I can’t wait to see more.

Briefly: Here’s the latest red-band trailer for Welcome to the Jungle, starring our main man, Jean-Claude Van Damme in what looks to be an absolutely hilarious role.

I have to imagine that Welcome to the Jungle‘s distributor is beyond excited for the film’s release now that JCVD is all over the internet. Of course, we never stopped loving the man, but it’s never too late to start!

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to it! Welcome to the Jungle hits theatres (and VOD) on February 7th!

Legendary action star Jean-Claude Van Damme takes on his first comedic role and joins Adam Brody, Rob Huebel, Kristen Schaal, Megan Boone, and Dennis Haysbert in “Welcome to the Jungle”. This laugh-out-loud comedy follows a group of unsuspecting office workers who find themselves stranded on a desert island when a corporate retreat led by unhinged former Marine Storm Rothchild (VAN DAMME) goes horribly wrong. Now Chris (BRODY) and his co-workers must battle nature — and each other — to survive!

Briefly: I never thought that I would say (type) these words, but we are now just a few weeks away from the release of Knights of Badassdom.

We saw the first trailer for the film all the way back in 2011, and for some reason… the movienever came out. As far as I’m aware, nobody really knows why it was shelved for so long. Seeing as many of the film’s stars have absolutely exploded in popularity since the movie was shot, there has never been a better time to release it than right now. The film stars Peter Dinklage, Summer Glau, Ryan Kwanten, Steve Zahn, Danny Pudi, and plenty of others.

Last month, Entertainment One released a short new trailer for the film, and today IGN has debuted the film’s latest poster. Take a look at the sweet new image below, and let us know if you’re excited! Knights of Badassdom hits VOD (hopefully not only in the US) on February 11th!

Anyone else feel like they’ve been waiting for this forever?

I believe it was October when Joe Starr messaged me asking if I’d be willing to review his stand-up CD Heroic Effort. I agreed immediately. Joe Starr is easily one of my favorite people on the west coast and I love to help out a friend. Then I panicked.

There’s nothing worse than having to review something for a friend. I was afraid to listen to the album. What if it was bad? What if I have to pretend it was great? Or do I say it was bad and tarnish a decent friendship? Well I was in luck. When I finally got up the nerve to listen to the album I found myself laughing both loudly and frequently.

a3699297462_10

Joe Starr’s 51 minute set is packed with tons of pop culture references both mainstream and obscure. We start off with Joe start talking about his love of conspiracy theories in the first 5 minutes we get references to The Matrix, Saved by the Bell, Jurassic Park and Downton Abby.

Throughout the rest of the album you here stories about Joe Starr meeting Macho Man Randy Savage as a child, Furries, listening to his neighbors have sex and why Kevin Costner is the reason he no longer believes there is a God (among many other topics).

If you’re looking for a good entertaining Geek-centric comedy album, you can’t do much better than Joe Starr’s Heroic Effort. Pick up your copy on iTunes or Bandcamp.

Briefly: The red-band trailer for the Jason Bateman directed Bad Words hit theatres a few weeks back (check it out here), and the film instantly became one of my most anticipated comedies of the year.

The chemistry and antics of Bateman’s Guy and 8th grader Chaitanya are fantastic, and is something that I could easily watch for the length of a feature film. A family-friendly(ish, unlike the movie itself) green-band trailer for the film has just hit the web; it’s got a bunch of new footage in tow, and it’s just as hilarious as the last preview.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know if you’ll be checking out Bad Words when it releases on March 28th!

Jason Bateman makes his directorial debut with the subversive comedy, BAD WORDS.

Bateman stars as Guy Trilby, a 40-year old who finds a loophole in the rules of the National Quill Spelling Bee and decides to cause trouble by hijacking the competition. Contest officials, outraged parents, and overly ambitious 8th graders are no match for Guy, as he ruthlessly crushes their dreams of victory and fame.

As a reporter attempts to discover his true motivation, Guy finds himself forging an unlikely alliance with a competitor: awkward 10-year old Chaitanya (Rohan Chand of ‘Homeland’), who is completely unfazed by Guy’s take-no-prisoners approach to life.

The movie also stars Alison Janney, Kathryn Hahn and Phillip Baker Hall.

This week I skyped in with Calen Fox. Calen is a UK filmmaker that I met through Dana Michael. His newest project is Beat My Boss a short film about revenge. Donate to their IndieGoGo and let’s get this short made!

Briefly: Sony Pictures today debuted the first red band trailer for 22 Jump Street.

Briefly: I thought that it would never happen, but Knights of Badassdom is finally coming out.

Entertainment One (the film’s new distributor) has released a new preview clip exclaiming that “Thy wait is over.” The film is schedule to hit theatres on  January 21st, and release on VOD February 11th.

Take a look at the new preview below, and let us know if you’re excited!

And here’s that classic trailer:

Jeff Grace makes his return to the show to talk about his brand new film ‘Folk Hero And Funny Guy’ that he’s currently raising funds for, starring ‘Girls’ actor Alex Karpovsky! Plus, he’s got a one hour Hulu comedy special coming out in January that he can only tell us a little bit about (what’s the fun in that!?!)! Also, Jeff talks about releasing his movie ‘It’s a Disaster’ on the same weekend as the Boston Bombing. How did that effect things? PLUS! ‘Fangasm’s Andrew Duval guest co-hosts and I drop some big news about the future of Geekscape!

Last year was my first FunFunFun Fest and I gotta say, it was actually pretty damn fun. I loved the musical acts (RUN DMC absolutely killed it!), the interesting people you encounter, the abundant variety of food choices, the taco cannon (you heard right), and the comedy acts. Last year we had David Cross, Hannibal Buress, Wyatt Cenac, Doug Benson, Jon Benjamin and many other talented comics.

With less than a month away, FFFFest organizers recently announced one last addition to their comedy lineup this year with the multitalented Sarah Silverman. She will be joining other esteemed comedians including Patton Oswalt, Doug Benson, Craig Robinson, Tenacious D and many others.

Are you going to the festival? I will be covering the event for Geekscape, so please let us know if you make it out!

F.J. DeSanto is a film producer whose credits include Frank Miller’s ‘The Spirit’ (but I love him for producing the animated ‘Turok: Son of Stone’)! But he’s also a comic book writer! Now he’s on Geekscape talking about his new Archaia comic book ‘Cyborg 009’, based on the classic manga from legendary creator Shotaro Ishinomori! I also talk some Turok (because Turok is awesome) and F.J. helps to explain the new climate of creator ownership in comics, including the BOOM! and Archaia acquisition! PLUS! Ian Kerner calls up to talk about Ben Affleck being cast as Batman in Man of Steel 2!

The entire team at Kill Bosby is absolutely hilarious, and they need your help!

Earlier this year, the sketch comedy group produced a wonderful six episode webseries called Watch Immediately (watch in full here… immediately). The team received an incredible amount of amazing support, comments, and followers, while two main criticisms arose again and again: the show’s sub-par sound and lighting.

Kill Bosby is hard at work writing a second six episode season of Watch ImmediatelyThe first season was funded entirely out of the team’s own pockets, and they’re looking for some help before production of season two begins.

A Kickstarter campaign for Watch Immediately is well underway, and is currently at $3707 of its modest $6000 goal. With 15 days in the campaign remaining, Watch Immediately is making some great progress, and will likely see its goal met and exceeded! All money raised will go towards procuring the much needed sound and lighting equipment, ensuring that season two of Watch Immediately releases with stellar production values.

Take a look at the Watch Immediately Kickstarter video below, and if you like what you see, why not throw them a few bucks? There are plenty of great backer rewards up for grabs, including t-shirts, exclusive podcasts, producer credits, and even a live comedy show in your living room!

As you must know (mostly from the constant coverage of every new image, trailer, featurette, and poster), all of us here at Geekscape are unbelievably excited for Edgar Wright’s The World’s End, which is finally about to hit North American theatres (well, on August 23rd).

20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hellbent on trying the drinking marathon again.  They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King, a 40-year old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their hometown and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub – The World’s End.  As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s.  Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.

Briefly: Universal Pictures today released a fantastic new featurette for Edgar Wright’s The World’s End.

The video features plenty of new footage (and some pretty awesome fight choreography), and spotlights plenty of the film’s stars and crew including Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Edgar Wright.

Of course, the UK (and countless other places) have already seen The World’s End, and they loved it. The conclusion of the Cornetto trilogy has garnered near universal acclaim, and currently holds a cool 91% on RottenTomatoes. We’ll finally get our chance to see the film on August 23rd, and I can’t freaking wait.

Watch the new featurette below, and let us know if you’re excited! Already see the movie? How was it? Sound out below!

We’re just over a month away from the release of Edgar Wright’s The World’s End, and we couldn’t be more excited! The upcoming comedy looks like an absolute blast, and you can see from this just-released featurette that the picture is really a labour of love for everyone involved. All of Wright’s previous work has been incredible, and I’d expect no less from The World’s End.

Take a look at the new featurette below, which features interviews with plenty of individuals involved with the film, and let us know how excited you are to see the Cornetto trilogy conclude!

Available and near North Hollywood this Wednesday (6/26)? Good. Here’s something for you to see: a special performance of Gam3rs!

Gam3rs a hilarious one man show about a guy stuck at his call center job, while he tries to lead an epic raid and is constantly interrupted by his coworker, boss and girlfriend; each conveyed entirely by his reactions (it is a one man show after all). Gam3rs is packed to capacity with nerd and geek pop culture references so everyone (especially readers of Geekscape) can relate to some part of it. Also, the show is still very amusing, even if you have never played a role playing game: we’ve all had that boss, that phone call with mom, or that conversation with a significant other that made the day that much more frustrating.

This performance will be put on by Brian Bielawski, the creator of the play, and it will be “shown to a limited number of guests to help raise funds for GAM3RS the Web Series! Please join us for this magical evening of wine, raffles, and lots of laughter. Our focus will be on the actor, as the majority of the set will already be in San Diego for the Fringe.”

The release of The World’s End, Edgar Wright’s conclusion to the revered Cornetto trilogy is quickly approaching, and Universal pictures has just unveiled a new trailer for the film.

The new preview reveals a little too much of the movie in my opinion, and definitely takes away from the well-shrouded mystery of the picture, so remember that before you decide to watch. It’s also an absolutely hilarious trailer, and is an infinitely exciting taste of what we’ll be seeing later this Summer.

Watch the new preview below (if you dare), and let us know if you’re excited for the movie! The World’s End stars Martin Freeman, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Rosamund Pike, David Bradley, and plenty of other awesome blokes, and will hit North American theatres on August 23rd!

With E3 (or at least the big press conferences) and Apple’s WWDC both starting today, I didn’t expect to see much in the way of movie news. That being said, Edgar Wright and his upcoming film The World’s End is bigger than both those conferences combined.

Six new character posters have been revealed for the film, and each gives us a little more insight on the folks we’ll be meeting in the movie. Check out the new images below, and let us know what you think! The World’s End stars Martin Freeman, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Rosamund Pike, David Bradley, and plenty of other awesome blokes, and will hit North American theatres on August 23rd!

Now playing on Machinima Prime is a new series from a surprising star/writer, Orlando Jones. It turns out that he’s a comic book aficionado and absolutely loves graphic novels.  His new series, Tainted Love is an interesting mix of media, combining live action with a graphic novel. The story however, is not for the kiddies: the plot is urban, contemporary, and if it was rated it would certainly be an “R”.

Orlando Jones stars as Barry, a criminal suffering from “Tainted Love.” He’s a hustler who has a way of making ends meet, but when he hooks up with lady love, ‘Jezebel’, played by Deanna Russo (Being Human, Burning Love), things start to go crazy, including a non-so-planned pregnancy.

Notorious good actor who plays bad guys, Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight, The Expendables), brings his own brand of tough guy to the production as well. He plays a crime boss not unlike the one he played as Marconi in Nolan’s Batman. In addition, Maz Jobrani (Axis of Evil Comedy Tour) and Jim Jefferies (Legit) bring comedic touches to the show.

In an exclusive interview I spoke with Orlando about this hilarious, laugh out loud series.

Allie Hanley: Tell me about your new series ‘Tainted Love’, that you wrote and also star in.

Orlando Jones: It is an action comedy, graphic novel, at least that’s how I describe it anyway. The ideology is really just based on that we all love things that we are not supposed to, and as amazing as love is, it is often tainted.

I really like that idea and I really thought telling the story about characters that people think have no dignity and therefore, people treating them as if they have no humanity. Just an idea that I was interested in exploring.

Barry and Jezebel are two criminals having a kid, which felt to me like “Tainted Love.”  They love the criminal parts of their lives, and at the same time they are having a kid which just seemed like crazy making to me.

AH: So your show is part live action, part graphic novel; Whose idea was that, and how hard was that to incorporate into live action story?

OJ: I think there were a lot of challenges to figure out. It was definitely an idea that I had and the simple idea was that if you were to create Batman or Iron Man, or whatever the comic book is, you  wouldn’t do it the same way you would do it in the 50’s or the 60’s, even the 70’s for that matter, where in you would draw this and then launch it in the print business. I mean every week we hear about the dying print business and how everything is moving to digital so I thought in 2013 if I was to launch a graphic novel into the space, I thought where would I do that and how would I do that? It meant that it had to be live action and how would that come to life? It also meant that you had to go where that audience is, and that would be Machinima. At the time I didn’t know anyone really at Machinima. At the time I didn’t think I was going to walk in and pitch them a live action graphic novel and have them go great, let me write you a check. So I felt the burden was really on me if I wanted to tell that story, and try to figure out how to do it with my partners.

Ultimately what you are looking at is pretty much collaboration with those individuals. It’s been an exciting ride. Incorporation of art created a whole other set of different issues because it needed to feel that the graphic novel was the basis of it, and that it was in fact, coming alive.

It meant first deciding what your art was going to look like; and then secondly the art needed to be original and fresh. Thirdly that the visual effects elements were there to make it come alive, and lastly that the narrative felt organic.

A lot of that was trial and error, and a lot of that was planning. Frankly we were just fortunate that it all came together, happy that it all came together. It certainly affects the way we told the story, because the rules are different on Machinima than they are on a traditional expense.

AH: Your series rolls at a fast pace, and is definitely for adults. Your co-star Deanna Russo has a lot of screen time with you, and a lot of skin to skin action as well. Tell me about that, and if you guys were friends before that…. And just for fun, can you do it in an Alabama accent since I know that’s your home state?

OJ <in a crazy Southern Accent>: Well I remember seeing her a couple times on the television… and she’s hot to trot. So I asked her if she would come on over and meet with me. And she came on down there, and she had the right spirit and the right attitude and I didn’t want her to be some side-arm, ya know what I mean? So she’s a comic book nerd herself -ya know? And I wanted her not to be the way so many other women are portrayed on television – ya know? What I mean, not another girlfriend or just a pair a boobs. I told her she was driving this, and I am going to be following you. Then she looked at me like I was crazy; and then she thought I was bullshittin’ but I wasn’t. And that there is the way it came together.

AH: Thanks for cracking us up with that funny accent! You’re the best! So in episode 2 we get a look at “Fred Lucus” played by Eric Roberts in a role that looks similar to the one he played in the Christopher Nolan Batman movies, will we be seeing a lot of him in the 6 episodes?

OJ: You will see pieces of him, they are definitely there. In this story I wanted to spend most of my time with the two lead characters. Eric is hysterical and amazing in it. But I think he represents an image (for me), the type of bad guy that’s very funny. His interest in violence is really secondary to his interest in his brand of playing the bad ass. For me, he does things for his brand and he doesn’t really do things that are personal. So “Barry” creates a scenario where he invokes him in personal way. I don’t want to spoil it.

We’ve been fortunate to take this to the big screen and you will get to see more of that character as it plays out. Because there is a definitely an idea of how a bad guy is suppose to be, not just a pretend bad guy.

AH: He’s got the look, that’s for sure.

OJ: Ha ha, yes he does.

Looking for more from Orlando Jones? He’ll be joining Jonathan on Thurday’s episode of Geekscape! Check it out at 6PM PST on the Toadhop Network! Watch chapter one of Tainted Love below, and let us know what you think!

It may not be as red-band as yesterday’s V/H/S/2 trailer, but the new preview for The Hangover Part III is certainly NSFW.

The latest trailer first takes us through the wolfpack’s humble beginnings and its darkest hours, before showing us just what’s in store for them next. Everything looks like pretty standard Hangover fare, so you likely already know whether or not you’ll enjoy this one.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think! The Hangover Part III hits theatres on May 24th!

The Hangover Part III” is the third and final film in director Todd Phillips’ record-shattering comedy franchise. This time, there’s no wedding. No bachelor party. What could go wrong, right? But when the Wolfpack hits the road, all bets are off.

Maybe this isn’t the darkest timeline after all…

It’s surprising news, but NBC’s long trouble Community has been renewed for a fifth season. The episode count has not yet been revealed, but it’s a safe bet that we’ll get at least 13.

I’ve been a fan of the show since it first premiered in 2009, and it’s been shocking to hear of the show’s renewal every year since then. Season four has suffered from both the worst ratings and the worst episodes, so I was really not expecting another year of content.

I’m unbelievably excited about the news. What do you hope to see in season five?

Disney today released a cool new trailer for the upcoming Monsters Inc. prequel, Monsters University. This preview is much different than the charming first trailer we showed you back in February, focussing almost entirely on the overarching story of the film.

Monsters University hits theatres on June 21st, and looks like a great time! Watch the new trailer below, and let us know what you think!

Monsters Inc. released when I was just ten years old, so I’m really looking forward to seeing some new content featuring these characters!

“Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. Monsters University unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends.

Well that was quick.

Barely two months have passed since Amazon revealed that the company would be producing a series based on 2009’s Zombieland, and today, they released the pilot online.

We first received casting news for the anticipated pilot back in February, when Kirk Ward joined the project as Tallahassee. The pilot also stars Izabela Vidovic as Little Rock, Malara Walsh as Wichita, and Tyler Ross as Columbus.

Of course, the Zombieland project began as a television show, long before it turned into a feature film, so it’ll be quite interesting to see it in the format it was originally envisioned. Zombieland creators Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick returned to write the series, so hopefully it retains the same feel as the movie did.

US residents can head to Amazon and check out the 29-minute pilot episode. Everyone else, you’ll have to settle for the trailer. Already watch it? Let us know what you thought!
