Let’s travel back to the gilded age of big hair, clock radio bombs and world-class pillow talk… no, not the 1980s, just the time we talked about 1980s killer pet flick ALLIGATOR! We’ve referenced this discussion enough that it finally warrants its own retroactive episode. Matt’s love of this movie (and fear of dressing up as a pirate to pool parties) is infectious and his lines are smooth. Give it up on your childhood bed for this retroactive episode of Horror Movie Night!

Happy Halloween from the HMN crew! As a special surprise, Matt forced Scott and Adam to watch one of his favorite Halloween films, Spaced Invaders. We don’t want to spoil the fun, but Scott and Adam were less than pleased with this turn of events. Dust off your Martian bomber jacket and practice up on your best pop culture voice impressions, it’s time to blow this turd up!

Briefly: I am so happy to see the Hess’s back in action.

I know that a lot of folks thought that Jared and Jerusha went off the deep end with 2009’s fabulous and super weird Gentlemen Broncos. Those folks, however, are dead wrong. Saying that the Hess’s went off the deep end implies that they weren’t there to begin with, and the fact that they embrace the completely absurd projects that the create have lead to some of the most heartfelt, quirky, and quotable comedies of our generation.

I also really miss the Napoleon Dynamite cartoon. Anyone else with me on that one?

In any case, the first trailer for the Jared Hess directed, Jared & Jerusha written Don Verdean has just hit the web, and if you’ve seen a single one of the Hess’s previous films, you know exactly what you’re getting into.

It’s weird as hell, and it looks insanely hilarious.

This time around, we’ll join Sam Rockwell, Amy Ryan, Jemaine Clement, Leslie Bibb, Will Forte and Danny McBride as they uncover the world’s most sacred relics. “Hired by an ambitious small-town pastor to find sacred relics in the Holy Land, a self-proclaimed Biblical archaeologist comes up short and his attempt to cover up his failure fuels a comic conspiracy from the filmmaking team behind Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre.” Yep. Hilarious.

Take a look at the first trailer for Don Verdean below, and let us know what you think! Are a you a fan of the Hess’s previous projects? Sound out below!

Don Verdean hits theatres and On Demand December 11th!

Grab the sunscreen and a couple barrels of Roundup, we’re heading to The Ruins! While none of the guys can find anything nice to say about the characters, they do make you feel good about watching plants eat people. Hope you have the tequila ready, it’s Horror Movie Night!

Well, I do dee-clay-uh! This week we are discussing the Bette Davis/Joan Crawford cult classic Whatever Happened to Baby Jane. Adam and Scott are surprisingly receptive to Matt’s choice of black and white suspense movies, so neither were tied up and incapacitated in their bedrooms after the podcast. Everyone’s pet birds made it out alive too, so we’re going to consider this episode of Horror Movie Night a success!

Hopefully you’ve bathed recently, because this film is going to make you feel dirty. A while back, the boys discussed Red White & Blue with guest picker Aubrie, and for once, Scott wasn’t the bad cop! You’re going to need your revenge served up with a heaping dose of penicillin – it’s Horror Movie Night!

Better go into this one on an empty stomach, cuz this week’s discussion is Evil Dead 2013! One of us loses an eye, another loses an arm, and all of us lose our self-respect as we detox in the woods with Mia & company. If you ignore all warnings, including dead cats and scribbled alerts that reading the creepy book you found in the basement will turn all of your friends into fleshbags for murderous demons, you’ll fit right in on this week’s Horror Movie Night!

What happens when a struggling hack writer collides with the dull necessities of modern society at the very moment when its systemic foundation cracks and unleashes hell on Earth? The answer is Cooties.

From the twisted minds of Leigh Whannell (co-creator of Saw and Insidious) and Ian Brennan (co-creator of Glee), Cooties is a horror comedy with unexpected laughs and unapologetic thrills. When a cafeteria food virus turns elementary school children into killer zombies, a group of misfit teachers must band together to escape the playground carnage. The film stars Elijah Wood (The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings), Rainn Wilson (The Office), and Alison Pill (The Newsroom) as teachers who fight to survive the mayhem while hilariously bickering in an uncomfortable love triangle on the worst Monday of their lives.

There’s a world that exists between terror and hilarity—Cooties is that world. Additionally, there is a world that exists between the mundane and the deadly—Cooties is also that world. Lest we forget, there is yet another world that lies between the shackles of huge studio budgets and the freedom doing just what you please with cell phone video—Cooties has a very nice summer cottage in that world.

So should you go see Cooties? Yes, it was a real hoot! (However, you might want to watch this safety video first.) I can see it easily connecting with audiences simply as a fun date movie—where your date squirms into your arms during several scenes—and/or, on the other end of the spectrum, as silly commentary on the American diet overall and poultry production specifically (see “Extra Credit” below).

The movie is chock-full of quotable lines and memorable moments—which, refreshingly, aren’t all given away in the trailer!

Admittedly, I can get a little squeamish with gross-out stuff and, while the opening title sequence—over How It’s Made type shots of a poultry processing facility—had me squirming deeper into my seat, it was the perfect setup for the movie. It sets the right tone from the first frame.

The basis for the horror, tainted chicken nuggets, is at once silly and frighteningly realistic. The chills, squirms and laughs are a very natural extension of this premise. The comedy is, at times, surprisingly sharp; hitting more often than it misses—and some asides and “throwaway” lines are so clever you may miss the jokes lurking below the surface joke. To the writers’ credit, many of them are “had to be there” laughs. Only when I was trying, in vain, to explain some nugget of hilarity did I discover the sneaky comedy and/or horror lying just underneath. (For example: When the vice-principal gives an offhand description of the silent office secretary as hilarious and then qualifies it with the explanation that she’s experienced a lot of tragedy some time ago. Funny on its own and then also “inside comedy” funny.) On the other side of the spectrum, there are plenty of sight-gags and fart jokes to go around.

My overall impression of the production was that I felt the limitations of the budget but it wasn’t constantly detracting from my enjoyment of the material—a successful B horror comedy. Hand in hand with this, the sense of this being a feature directing debut was also felt, providing some rough edges and unexpected choices, but again, more interesting than negative. I might describe it positively to my friends as “a sillier twist on the love child of The Faculty and Shaun of the Dead; which would sell me on it.

The cast is a really good ensemble but I think the standouts for me were the characters created by Leigh Whannell (Doug) and Nasim Pedrad (Rebekkah) who struggle with basic human interaction from vastly different perspectives. All of the characters aren’t merely misfit teachers, they’re misfit humans by societal standards, which can make them feel all the more relatable. I’m hoping there will be a bigger budget sequel where we can follow these more hardened characters struggling to survive in this hilariously scary new world.

One thing worth mentioning is that I enjoyed the setup of Jorge Garcia’s character and wish that he would’ve been integrated into the story more. I bring this up just to keep you from sitting there going, “When is that guy going to spring into action?!” He won’t—so don’t worry about it. Content yourself with being amused by him as he is.

As I’ve elluded to, I’m not really a fan of splatter-flicks or gross-out movies but I feel that this did a great job of walking up to that line and reaching across just enough to make its point without turning me off. (Oddly, a shot of a kid eating his booger may have gotten the biggest reaction out of me. Guess I haven’t been desensitised to that yet.) I was a little worried about what I’d gotten into with the entire intro title sequence but, by the end of the titles, I was fully engaged and not too grossed out.

I feel that Cooties successfully lived up to the premise it established—and while it may not have hit it totally out of the park, it rounded the bases in satisfying fashion. Grab your best guy or gal and go catch Cooties—just know that in short order you’ll be grabbing them even tighter with squeals and laughs.

The potential that The Final Girls (theaters, streaming, on-demand October 9th) seems to suggest goes beyond parody or homage and, leveraging mechanics borrowed from science fiction, actually uses the horror motif to birth a new experience in a unique genre that has few other entries.

Off the top of my head, Stay Tuned and Pleasantville are a couple examples of movies where entertainment becomes a viable dimension, while television’s Supernatural has toyed with the concept, using various approaches (coming at it from inside and outside!), in several episodes to fantastic effect. [At this point, I took off on a tangent about one of my unexpected all-time favorite examples of this—but it went on a touch longer than I’d imagined, so I’ve scooched it down to the bottom here. I do think it’s relevant and really expands on the potential covered here. I finally summarize with:] Bottom line; the conceit possible here is a still-fresh existential exploration of the meaning—while also testing the limits of functionality!—behind our very existence on an individual level. . . and that’s freakin’ exciting.

My reactions to the trailer alone are already leaping around the emotional spectrum. Is it possible that these filmmakers are able to tap genuine emotional moments within their “lightly sci-fi” parody of a horror film homage? Could this be another level of intelligent creative force such as Community and Rick and Morty creator Dan Harmon has been safeguarding as of late? The only bigger thing I see on director Todd Strauss-Schulson’s resume up to this point is A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, which means he’s pretty much unproven at the moment. Maybe unlike some in Hollywood, I find this very exciting—do we have here an emerging voice about to burst on the scene? My fingers are crossed.

The cast looks pretty darn decent with a couple existing genre entertainment favorites, Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries) and Malin Akerman (Watchmen), as well as a few comedy heavy-hitters that have been making names for themselves recently, Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development), Adam DeVine (Pitch Perfect, ModernFamily) and Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley), while the rest of the cast looks like some talented rising stars without a bad apple in the bunch.

Could the “feel good horror movie of the year” literally have it all?—horror, hilarity and genuine feeling stuffed in a clever wrapper with a side welcomed cheesy? I say we find out together!

The Part Where I Go off on a Fitting Tangent I Hope You’ll Enjoy:

One of my favorite examples, because I never saw it coming and it fit a square story peg in a round show hole better than could ever be expected, happened on the sitcom ‘Til Death. Actually, I don’t think anyone ever saw it. . . period. I only ran across it because I was working at that time to get the episodes up on iTunes. What sets this example apart is that it directly includes the viewer in on the event. If you never saw the show—and, according to ratings, few did—it was the story of a married couple (Brad Garrett and Joely Fisher) who were bitterly holding on to their marriage “til death,” putting up with each other, their struggling twenty-something daughter (several actresses, including Krysten Ritter) and the dope she married (wonderfully played by Timm Sharp). That’s a broad stroke because I was never really watching either until the daughter’s husband, who she lived with in a trailer, parked in the backyard. . . started seeing the set! Like he would point out the lighting rigs, reference the boom mics and talk about the set props! It was brilliant!

At one point he references there was like four different actress that had played his girlfriend/wife over the years! He laments not being able to have sex because the scene always cuts away just as it’s starting! He could see beyond the forth wall but it wasn’t violating the reality for any of the other characters who convinced him to start seeing a therapist (Mayim Bialik, who’s acknowledged as having played Blossom!).

It was some of the most innovative television I’ve ever seen and the flashy hook was deftly used by the writers to explore the nature of reality, acceptance and what the meaning of life could be—the promise of science-fiction as a tool of revelation crammed into a dying goofy sitcom that wouldn’t see another season! (If you ever want to see this for yourself, seek out only season 4. The previous seasons were trying all the standard attempts to save a sitcom that never should’ve been. That last season found a fantastic world on the very far side of jumping the shark.) It’s one of the greatest events I’ve ever witnessed and a lot of fuel behind why I’m so excited about what the filmmakers could pull off with The Final Girls.

Close your mouth and open your ears, cuz this week’s discussion is Night of the Creeps! Our guest Don waxes poetic about houseboats and his future robot upgrades, while Adam realizes he has handicap blindness. Zombified douchbags in tuxes, reanimated axe murderers, and the cop from Dr. Giggles make an appearance, so leave your human brains (they’re for a project) in the basement and join us for Horror Movie Night!

This trailer looks bad—awesome bad! Badass! Just the sort of cheat-day candy I wanna fill my eyeholes with!

These writer/directors clearly love three things:

The ’80s
B-Movie Apocalyptic Coming of Age Stories
Over the Top Awesome Badassery!

TurboKid_Poster01_700x1041

If, like me, you’re also a fan of such shenanigans, then the winter of our discontent may be about to blossom into a spring of BMX fueled laser explosions. Based on the trailer, Turbo Kid looks poised to hit that sweet spot where it’s self-aware enough not to be self-conscious—delivering on its promise without apologizing for it.

As far as I can tell, these filmmakers have yet to burst on the Hollywood scene but if this film is nearly as good as its trailer I’ll be happy to say I watched it happen for them when Turbo Kid hits theaters August 28th.

This week’s discussion is Odd Thomas, which brings us to ponder second-rate horror novelists, nu-metal tattoos and ghost sex. Matt has never hated a pick this much, while Adam and Scott just like to overtalk each other. There are more tangents than Bodachs in Odd’s town, so get your ice cream ready for another installment of Horror Movie Night!

Briefly: This looks pretty hilarious, and I’m not just saying that because I have a huge crush on Allison Brie.

Can two serial cheaters get a second chance at love? After a one-night stand in college, New Yorkers Lainey (Brie) and Jake (Sudeikis) meet by chance twelve years later and discover they each have the same problem: because of their monogamy-challenged ways, neither can maintain a relationship. Determined to stay friends despite their mutual attraction, they make a pact to keep it platonic, a deal that proves easier said than done.

Sounds pretty ridiculous, doesn’t it? Yeah. It looks pretty ridiculous too. Watch the red-band trailer below:

Sleeping With Other People hits theatres on September 11th.

Back in the late 1990’s, when a young Matt Kelly was first discovering his love of horror movies as well the resourcefulness of the internet, he began a quest to find a movie he saw as a child. The movie I was searching for involved a kid moving into a house and the only details I remember were (1) smoke coming out of the vents (2) a couch ate someone (3) a kid getting trapped in a basement.

Now it turns out this movie was Saturday the 14th Strikes Back which wasn’t a good movie… but I didn’t find that out for many years. The first movie someone suggested it might be was People Under the Stairs. Now if you’re familiar with this movie you know that only 1 of those 3 things actually happened. So this was also my first lesson in the unreliablity of the internet.

Wes-05

I could not figure out what to make of this movie. I didn’t like it but yet… I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Was it a comedy? Was it a horror? Few films made me feel the way that People Under the Stairs made me feel. I watched it repeatedly.

As the years went by my love for this movie grew and grew. I was obsessed with its quirks. I’ve met a small handful of people who adore this movie with the same origin story as myself, but most hate it.

Rewatching this movie in its beautiful Scream Factory transfer just further reminded me of how much I love this movie. It’s a creepy flick with a wicked sense of humor. As far as Wes Craven’s “lesser” films I think this one is his hidden masterpiece.

Unknown

Scream Factory really did this Blu-Ray right. Beyond its great transfer they have finally given us a commentary track so that you can hear Wes Craven explain this insane film to us, as well as a commentary from the cast.

There’s also lots of Behind-The-Scenes footage and interviews with everyone from the actors, the special effects team, the composer and the director of photography.

People Under the Stairs is available by Scream Factory today!

Come down to lake Havasu and crack a brew with us because this week we’re talking Piranha 3D. Wet T-Shirt contests, Trip McNeely’s penis, Eli Roth getting his face smashed in by a boat and Richard Dreyfuss reprising his role of Matt Hooper are just SOME of the reasons to love this bat-shit crazy movie from 2010. Adam regrets picking this movie while Matt and Scott geek out over everything from Christopher Lloyd’s over acting and how hot Elizabeth Shue (and Ving Rhames) still is.

In this episode of Horror Movie Night, we watch and discuss 1993’s slashfest Dr. Giggles. Matt laughs harder than he has since he gave Scott a physical, and Adam is so disappointed with his first viewing of Dr. Giggles he eats a half gallon of ice cream; luckily, Matt has his vintage stomach pump handy. Also, listen for a shocking revelation about Dr. Giggle’s connection to another popular horror franchise, and how he drives cops to the bottle in the process.

Once every generation, a film will come along that’s so revolutionary, that it changes the way we view cinema. From Citizen Kane to The Godfather, Rocky to Forest Gump. But all of these surefire classics pale in comparison to Kung Pow: Enter The Fist. A film that was obviously far ahead of its time based on the unjust reviews of 2002, Steve Oedekerk’s overdub of the 1976 kung fu movie, Tiger and Crane Fists, film has since reached cult status across the Internet.

The only real flaw with this unforgettable movie going experience was that it teased a sequel that never came. Due to its initial negative reception, and Oedekerk’s shift in focus towards fully embracing his love of farm animals with Nickelodeon’s Barnyard, it was assumed that Kung Pow would live on in legend alone.

That is until Dragonfest in Burbank, California, where The Chosen One himself announced that he was indeed moving forward with Kung Pow 2, 13 years after he graced us with the original. Details outside of this confirmation that it’s still a thing have yet to surface, but we’re just excited to know that we’re going to get more of the poorly dubbed, awkwardly shrieking, one boobed brilliance that we fell in love with for some reason.

What’s your reaction to this Kung Pow revival? Will we see the likes of Ling, Master Betty and Wimp Lo join The Chosen One? Let us know what you want to see below, and check back as more information becomes available!

When I was a child I discovered “Weird Al” Yankovic. Being the innocent youngster that I was I asked my grandfather if he had any Weird Al records. He didn’t mock me, he didn’t say “that’s not really my cup of tea”… my eternally awesome grandfather said “I don’t but I think I have something you’ll like”.

The next week when we visited my grandfather he handed me a cassette tape. I don’t think there exists a cassette that I’ve listened to as much as that one. Every day I’d liken to it and absorb it. It was a mix of music from Benny Bell, Spike Jonze and my favorite of the three, Stan Freberg. Some of you might be saying “who’s that?” Allow me to explain.

In the 50’s Freberg started his career at Capitol records doing parody sketches. These included classics like John and Marsha (a parody on bad soap operas), his classic Dragnet parodies and my personal favorite his “musical interruption” series.

“What was that?” I’m sure you’re thinking. To be fair I made up the name, I’m not sure if there was ever an official title for these skits but the general idea was that Freberg would cover famous songs in a spot on impression of the original singer. These performances would however be interrupted. Sometimes it’d be too much drumming (Yellow Rose of Texas), too much echo (Heartbreak Hotel) or a beatnik who hated the music (in Great Pretender and Banana Boat song).

These songs still hold up today, although having a little knowledge of music history or at the very least an awareness of the original songs goes a long way.

He continued in his popular with a satirical radio show, Ed Sullivan appearances, voice work for Garfield & Friends and even an appearance on the 1997 Saturday Morning show The Weird Al Show. He was even approached by George Lucas to voice C3P0 (despite false rumors of it being Mel Blanc) and it was Freberg who suggested Lucas look into Anthony Daniels.

Freberg never stopped working, he continued to voice numerous characters in the new CGI Garfield series.

Yesterday, at the age of 88 years old Stan Freberg passed away from Pneumonia. He will always be one of those links to the grandfather I miss so dearly.

Briefly: I had no idea that this existed until its first trailer dropped a few weeks back, but since then I’ve been insanely excited for Netflix’s own Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

The show comes from 30 Rock executive producers Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, and its a “new comedy series starring Ellie Kemper (“The Office,” “Bridesmaids”) as a woman who is rescued from a doomsday cult and starts life over as a nanny for an Upper East Side socialite (Jane Krakowski from “30 Rock”) in New York City. Armed with just a backpack, light-up sneakers and a couple way-past-due library books, she takes on a world she didn’t think even existed anymore.”

It looks hilarious, and it looks freaking adorable. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt just got a new poster, so take a look below, and let us know if you’ll be binging this one when it releases on March 6th.

Kimmy

Welcome Back to Saint Mort’s Nostalgia Nightmare. Glad to see you enjoyed it enough last week to revisit. Continuing in my Scream Factory Blu-Ray reviews I’ve got another double feature. Today you can own their double feature release of Vampire’s Kiss and High Spirits. Let’s dive in!

VK-HS.BR.Cover.300dpi_{8bc1a187-e695-e411-9d31-d4ae527c3b65}

Not only have I never seen either of these films prior to this Blu-Ray appearing on my doorstep, I’ve never even heard of one of them. I wasn’t sure what to expect going into it. Over the course of 5 hours I watched Vampire’s Kiss twice (once normally and once with commentary) and High Spirits.

Let’s start with Vampire’s Kiss. I’d heard many things about this movie, specifically that it’s one of the most Cage-iest of Nicholas Cage movies. I was not lied to in the least. The movie is bizarre, confusing, unintentionally funny at parts and a chore to watch at others.

The movie tells the story of Peter Loew, a womanizing literary agent who spends all day in the office and all night at the clubs and having one night stands. One night he takes home a vampire named Rachel who begins feeding on him nightly. Or does he?

Vampire’s Kiss is all about questioning what is reality while following an unhinged businessman that’s wrapped up in all the sleeze, culture and status of the 80s. Basically it’s American Psycho if Nicholas Cage played Patrick Bateman.

It’s got some fantastic moments in it and has notoriety for a infamous still which has become a meme (Scream Factory was smart to include that still on the back of the Blu-Ray). The commentary track between director Robert Bierman and Nicholas Cage is interesting to say the least. The two think highly of the movie and Bierman makes a few references to stylistic choices but then saying things like “I think I did that consciously”.

Vampires Kiss still 8_{e367209a-b8a5-e411-8748-d4ae527c3b65}_lg

If you can get past Cage’s awkward accent choice (he sounds like he’s doing a bad Keanu Reeves impression) and the dark comedic cruelness it’s not a bad film to watch… once. You’ll most likely never watch it again (unless you listen to the commentary track)… the same can’t be said for High Spirits.

I had a lot of fun experiencing High Spirits for the first time. I’m willing to believe that if I saw this movie when I was a child I’d hold it with the same level of nostalgic praise that I hold movies like Monster Squad and The Goonies.

Looking at this cast it’s amazing that I’ve never heard of this film. It’s a fantastic ensemble featuring such infamous actors as Peter O’Toole, Daryl Hannah, Liam Neeson, Jennifer Tilly, Steve Guttenberg and Beverly D’Angelo.

The movie follows Peter Plunkett who’s about to have his castle repossessed. In order to keep his property he tries to claim it’s haunted to scare the Americans that are visting the castle (including the daughter of the man repossessed the castle). When their fake ghost stories are discovered, real ghosts begin haunting the castle including Mary and Martin.

High Spirits still 15_{4f5a74db-bba5-e411-8748-d4ae527c3b65}_lg

Many centuries ago when Mary and Martin were married, Martin murdered Mary for infidelity. Every night the two are forced to re-enact that night. That is until one of the Americans Jack (Guttenberg) stops Martin, putting an end to cycle and causing Mary to fall in love with him.

I hope this film finds a decent resurgence from this Blu-Ray, as it’s a fantastic Halloween movie with ghosts, romance, comedy and a handful of good jump scares.

The most baffling thing about this film is that it’s written and directed by Neil Jordan, a man known for films of more adult nature like The Company of Wolves, The Crying Game and Interview with the Vampire.

Doing research to do these reviews/writeups I can’t understand how Vampire’s Kiss was more critically well received. It’s an interesting film but for very unintentional reasons. High Spirits is a much more enjoyable film overall.

Pick up a copy of the Vampire’s Kiss/High Spirits Blu-ray Today!

He’s also going to spend Valentine’s Day night in the basement watching horror movies while his roommate has sex. Welcome to Saint Mort’s Nostalgia Nightmare. Every week, Matthew “Saint Mort” Kelly will either review an upcoming release that he’s been sent or ramble about some of his horror favorites that you should revisit. This week, Matt reviews the upcoming Scream Factory release of the Love At First Bite/Once Bitten double feature Blu-Ray. Let’s begin!

LAFBOBBRCover300dpi_{6e77c8ea-e695-e411-9d31-d4ae527c3b65}_lg

The first thing that I noticed about this particular Blu-Ray release is its lack of special features. Essentially, there aren’t any (aside from some vintage movie trailers or radio spots). It’s understandable given that it’s two movies on one disc and space is limited, but it didn’t stop me from feeling a little let down given how incredible Scream Factory’s special features usually are.

Prior to this release I’d never even heard of Love at First Bite so of course I started with that. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but based on its title and its placement beside Once Bitten I assumed it was another teenage vampire movie. I was wrong.

The story follow Count Dracula (George Hamilton) after he has his castle repossessed and is forced to move to New York. He falls in love with famous model Cindy Sondheim (Susan Saint James) and begins to date her despite her crazy ex Dr. Jeffery Rosenberg (grandson of Van Helsing). The movie’s humor is just as wacky and irreverent as that description seems.

It’s a pretty unique twist on the Dracula mythology by flipping roles. The count is now our hopeless romantic hero and Van Helsing is the villain that we want to see fail. While I love that twist the film is still far perfect. That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have some great comedic moments; I particularly enjoyed a reoccurring joke involving Rosenberg’s (Richard Benjamin) clueless attempts to expose Dracula which include (but are not limited to) shooting him with silver bullets and holding a Star of David to the vampire’s face.

Love at First Bite still 9_{333794fd-bca5-e411-8748-d4ae527c3b65}_lg

I’d also be doing a disservice to the movie to not praise the fantastic performance from Arte Johnson as Reinfeld. Moments like him cackling with glee while watching a movie about rats attacking a women or crying while watching a commercial for Raid are just the right level of absurdist comedy to make this an enjoyable experience.

I don’t know how frequently I’ll rewatch Love at First Bite, but I’m certainly glad Scream Factory gave me the ability to experience this movie for the first time. However I think the main reason many people will be getting this Blu-Ray is for the second feature the 80’s vampire/teen flick classic Once Bitten.

I remember hearing about Once Bitten back in 1993 just as Ace Ventura was making Jim Carrey a household name to kids my age who couldn’t watch In Living Color. It became a fairly regular feature film on Comedy Central. I’d always seen the film in its TV-edited version. Maybe it’s because of this that I don’t remember how much homophobic humor is in the movie.

I think there will be a ton of critics who point to these moments (specifically the ‘Fags in the Shower’ sequence) as a reason to dislike or avoid revisiting it. I’m not one of those critics. I was raised on movies like Porky’s, Revenge of the Nerds and Hollywood Knights. We as a society have come and a long way and that’s great… but I still find something super charming about the close minded 80’s teen humor and like it or not homophobia is a big part of that.

Once Bitten still 4_{1f6199df-bda5-e411-8748-d4ae527c3b65}_lg

Most people only really think about Once Bitten because it’s a pre-famous Jim Carrey vehicle, but there’s more to the movie than that. It’s basically American Pie with Vampires. In order to maintain her eternal beauty and vampire countess must drink the blood of a virgin. Cut to Mark Kendall (Jim Carrey) and his group of friends trying to get laid. Mark believes he’s struck a sexual goldmine with the seductive Countess but he begins having weird cravings, an inability to sleep and weird dreams. It’s up to his on and off girlfriend Robin Pierce to take his virginity before the Countess drains him of all is blood.

This movie is way funnier than I remembered it. I still am a firm believer that in general My Best Friend is a Vampire (released two years after Once Bitten) is the superior Vampire Teenage film, but it’s undeniable that Once Bitten is a classic for a reason.

After watching this double feature I immediately felt like there should be another double feature from Scream Factory of Rockula and My Best Friend is a Vampire. So if anyone from Scream Factory is reading you should get on that for Saint Mort. Thanks in advance!

Get your own copy of Love at First Bite/Once Bitten from Scream Factory. It’ll be released February 10th, but you can pre-order right now! Also released the same day is the double feature of Vampire’s Kiss/High Spirits (look out for more about this next release next week).

Briefly: So I had no idea that this existed until today, and now I can’t wait to watch the entire thing in one sitting.

It’s called Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, it’s from 30 Rock executive producers Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, and it’s a “new comedy series starring Ellie Kemper (“The Office,” “Bridesmaids”) as a woman who is rescued from a doomsday cult and starts life over as a nanny for an Upper East Side socialite (Jane Krakowski from “30 Rock”) in New York City. Armed with just a backpack, light-up sneakers and a couple way-past-due library books, she takes on a world she didn’t think even existed anymore.”

It looks super adorable, and super funny, and a little bit like a modern day Blast from the Past. Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think! The entire first season hits Netflix on March 6th!

Oh boy! Last Sunday night on their livestream, Mega64 announced their newest Blu-Ray release! Check out the trailer for “Time is Running Out”

If you’re not familiar with the “Time” series of releases, then let me bring you up to speed. Every so often Mega64 collects the previous few years of their work in a nice handy dandy package. “Time is Running Out” is the fourth in the series, and the first one to be released on Blu-Ray!

This collection contains all their skits and commercials, unaired or rejected works, and a few new surprises. Each video will have its own commentary, which is worth the price of Blu-Ray alone! Hearing about the various trials and tribulations that went into each video is one of the most entertaining parts.

“Time is Running Out” also features a new story line running throughout, which if it is anything like their previous one on the “Time Travelers” collection then we’re all in for a treat.

The Blu-Ray will go on sale on Black Friday during Mega64’s yearly livestream, BUT you can preorder it now!

So what are you waiting for? Head on over to Mega64’s blog post for more detailed information and to secure your own copy of “Time is Running Out” now!

Briefly: I wasn’t overly impressed with the first trailer for Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s The Inverview, but today’s full-length, theatrical preview takes us much deeper into the film’s overarching plot, and definitely raises my excitement for the feature.

The video shows us exactly why Rogen and Franco are interviewing Kim Jong-Un, and also why they’re trying to assassinate him. The trailer garnered plenty of laughs and ‘oh crap’ moments from me, and now I can’t wait to get in line. The Rogen/Goldberg duo that’s so hot right now is also taking care of the ‘Console Wars’ adaptation, which I’m looking forward to even more after spending some time with author Blake Harris at SDCC this year.

In any case, take a look at the new trailer below, and be sure to let us know what you think! The Interview will hit theatres on December 25th!

Dave Skylark (James Franco) is king of the celebrity interview and host of the hit night time talk show “Skylark Tonight.” The brain behind Dave’s empire is his producer and best friend, Aaron Rapoport (Seth Rogen). Unfulfilled, Aaron yearns to do meaningful work. He scores the chance of a lifetime when he secures an interview for Dave with Kim Jong-Un, the mysterious and ruthless dictator of a nuclear-armed North Korea. As Dave and Aaron prepare to leave for North Korea, they are approached by the CIA and asked to assassinate Kim. They accept the mission, becoming two of the least qualified men ever to assassinate—or interview—the most dangerous man on Earth.

Skype strikes again with an obnoxious delay. I beg you to look past that however because this interview is among my favorites of all time. Kulap Vilaysack is the co-host of the Who Charted podcast and the director and star of the upcoming documentary Origin Story. Briefly: It’s an amazing time that we live in, isn’t it? Back in my day, when a show was cancelled, it was cancelled. You’d have fond memories of the hours you spent in front of your television, but you would never even hope or dream that there could possibly be more.

Now, it seem like shows come back from the dead fairly regularly (Arrested Development, Veronica Mars, The Killing… twice, just to name a few), and the returning series that I’m most (beyond) excited about is Yahoo!’s Community.

Yep, Yahoo! picked up the series and announced a sixth season on the final day before contracts expired, and the world hasn’t stopped talking about it since. Today, they debuted the first teaser / sizzle reel for the show, stating that Community will be “better than it was before,” and “Better. Faster. Stronger.”

The reel is composed of entirely existing footage, and even includes a nod of the hard-to-remember gas leak year, but it still makes us obnoxiously excited for what’s to come. You can take a look at the reel below, and be sure to let us know what you hope to see next season!

Briefly: This was sure cutting it close. NBC cancelled Community back in May, and its stars contracts would have expired at midnight tonight, but Yahoo! has announced that it’s resurrected Community for a 13 episode sixth season, with every episode releasing at once sometime in 2015  Update: Yahoo’s release has been edited, and now says that the episodes will be ‘released weekly this Fall’.

Maybe it’s not the darkest timeline after all. After talks with Hulu fell through, I thought for sure that the dream of six seasons and a movie would be cut short, but now fans have a glimmer of hope.

Dan Harmon said that “I am very pleased that Community will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo. I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, Big Bang Theory. Look out, Bang Bus!”

Chris McKenna, Russ Krasnoff and Gary Foster also return, and Joel McHale added ‘The reports of our cancelation have been greatly exaggerated.’ —Mark Twain (The other version of this quote has been wrong for years). #SixSeasonsAndaMovie is real. Thank you Sony. Thank you Yahoo. Thank you Dan Harmon.  And thank you to the greatest f%$#ing fans in the history of the human race. It’s the internet. We can swear now.”

We are so excited. So excited, in fact, that we just changed our default search provider.

What are your thoughts on the renewal? What do you hope to see next season? Sound out below!

Community

Briefly: It was barely three weeks ago that NBC broke our hearths with the cancellation of Community, one season and one movie shy of the series’ end goal.

Fans, of course, didn’t give up, and instead flooded Netflix and Hulu with requests to bring the show up. Weeks have passed, actors started moving on, and no announcements were made… but now there may be a glimmer of hope.

Deadline has learned that Sony (Community‘s owner) and Hulu have entered ‘preliminary’ talks to develop another season of the cult comedy. Hulu has just expressed interest in expanding their original content offerings, and this would be an absolutely incredible addition.

We’ll be sure to keep you updated as we learn more, but Human Beings, don’t lose hope yet. Do however, let us know how excited you’d be if this was picked up.
