Take all the good stuff you loved about A Nightmare on Elm Street, put it in a pile, and then light it on fire, THEN use all the stuff that you didn’t love and make a piece of crap with an electric ghost and you still might have made a better film that Wes Craven provided in his 1989 flop Shocker. We can’t decide if it makes it better or worse that the man who gave us Freddy tried to burden us with Horace Pinker the serial-killer-turned-electricity-Gremlin, but the experience is made somewhat bearable by a swearing child and sweet hair metal theme song. Be careful what you stick in the light socket this week on Horror Movie Night, you pervs!

Maybe it’s because we’re 3 clueless dudes, but does covering up a murder lead to you not washing your hair for a year but still being totally cool with wearing crop tops and belly shirts? We don’t know, but these are the hard-hitting questions we aggressively drive towards in this week’s discussion of 1997’s beautiful-people-screaming-at-nothing-and-quipping-like-it’s-a-romcom Kevin Williamson slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer! The best part about this movie is that no matter how many times you watch it, the plot points and character motivations are so inscrutable and inane that your brain doesn’t retain much of anything, so the killer’s third act reveal is always fresh. Plus everyone is super attractive (except for the actual killer…OR IS IT). Grab your galoshes cuz this flick’s slicker than a bucket of lukewarm chum and we’re going to chug it on this week’s Horror Movie Night!

It’s episode 99 so it should surprise no one that we went with Sleepaway Camp 2, the delightful sequel to episode 50’s Sleepaway Camp – now with 100% less baseball montages! SAC2 is arguably less transphobic, less homophobic, and definitely way more boob-filled than its predecessor, but one thing remains the same…Kids these days are only trying to get someone to touch them where they pee. For this sin, all must die. Join us as we decide which grossly inventive kill is the best and wonder how every camper appears to be 25 on this week’s episode of Horror Movie Night!

As you may have gathered from our Jason Takes Manhattan episode, we did a live taping recently after Monster Mania 36; in the likelihood that you, dear listeners, weren’t able to make it to the live show, we were thoughtful/sadistic enough to tape the show, and this week’s episode is the second half of our set, in which we lovingly eviscerate 1991’s ironically-named “final” installment in the NOES franchise, Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare! The hits come faster and harder than Breckin Meyer doing bong rips, so get yourself a drink and fire up your Powerglove for another episode of Horror Movie Night!

If there’s one thing the world of horror needs, it’s a movie where an undead killer stalks teenagers on a boat that can teleport from a closed lake to the open ocean. Really, there MUST be a market for that, right? To the people clambering for such a film, we bestow upon you this live discussion of Friday the 13th VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989), taped at the Brickwall Tavern in Burlington, New Jersey – that’s close enough to NYC, right? Matt and Scott are joined by punk rock supervillain Johnny Neutrino, whose last name Matt battles the entire episode. If you missed the HMN crew at Monster Mania 36, here’s your chance to get in on that strangely bloodless teen-killing massacre of a weekend. You’re at a bar with friends and weirdos are on stage making somewhat inappropriate jokes, better make it a double for this week’s (live) episode of Horror Movie Night!

2016 has been a real crap year, so of course it needs to end with an equally crappy horror movie about an totally-unmasked killer stalking women to kill as midnight rings in each timezone! That’s right, the boys are ringing in the new year with 1980s New Years Eeeeeeeeeeevil. This film is what you’d imagine a quaalude nap at Studio 54 felt like, though there would’ve probably been a ton more nudity there too, so really, that’s a lame example anyway. Nevermind, we have eeeeeeeevil to discuss, so if you’re really eeeeeeeeeevil, put on your best Christmas-ribbon dress, slap some rouge across that eeeeeeevil face, and LISTEN. TO. THE REPLAY on the first Horror Movie Night of 2017!

What was that? You didn’t get enough dream sequence shenanigans last week? Well, you’re in luck (and likely a glutton for punishment), because this week, the guys are tackling the uber-obscure direct to video Last Slumber Party (1988)! Don’t even try to make sense of this mess, just take it in and enjoy the absurdity. We’ve got a fresh set of surgeon scrubs and a 1000 yard stare ready for your Horror Movie all-Nighter, pillow fight anyone?

Are you ready for a group of insufferable teens (?) to get mutilated creatively by a ridiculous plot twist? If not, too bad, because this week, we’re talking Killer Karnivals From Outta Jersey, also known as 2006’s DARK RIDE! Adam and Scott have so many questions, but Matt and the writers of this film ain’t answering. Turn on all the lights, ignore the sticky body fluids that have been spilled all over the floor, and hop on this ride, cuz it’s Horror Movie Night!

It seems as though late 90’s teen slashers are the new hot topic over at Scream Factory, as this month they’re releasing not one but two forgotten gems of the genre.

Today they have released Disturbing Behavior on Blu-Ray. While far from my favorite of these slasher films, there’s still a few things to love in this movie –  specifically anything involving the two stoner characters.

DisturbingBehaviour

The movie is a pseudo remake of a Canadian film called Strange Behavior which I’d go ape-shit over if it was released on Blu-Ray by Scream Factory. Both films follow a small town where any students who are “free thinkers” are slowly transformed into ‘good kids’.

These good kids however tend to have weird laser eyes and slight murderous tendencies. The movie is fun but far from good. However the Blu-Ray is packed with enough fun additions (including a great commentary track) to make this worth adding to your movie collection.

However the better purchase is coming out next week with the release of the criminally underrated Cherry Falls.

CherryFalls

Cherry Falls is a slasher film and a parody of a slasher film at once. It’s very similar to Scream in that sense.

The movie plays off the trope about having sex. In this movie instead of the killer attacking you for having sex, you get slashed for not having sex. When news spreads that the killer is only targeting virgins a group of high school students organize a pop-your-cherry party to save their own lives.

The film is funny, witty and packed full of great scares and laughs. I stumbled upon this once on TV and remembered enjoying it but thanks to Scream Factory you can enjoy every amazing moment of this film. Just like Disturbing Behavior it is packed with some great special features (including commentary, behind the scenes footage and even a copy of the original screenplay).

It’s absolutely a must-have for any serious horror fan.

Cherry Falls is now available for pre-order as well as the double feature release of “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” and “The Dunwich Horror”. Both films are available on March 29th.

It’s that time of year again – the leaves are changing, the birds are chirping, your nose is bleeding whenever your crush is nearby… Ah, love. What a wondrous thing! It fills your heart with poorly-aimed arrows and your stomach with maggoty chocolates. This week, the guys get all hot and bothered with 2000’s, so fire up the hot tub and put on your bikini, cuz it’s gonna get sweaty – it’s Horror Movie Night!

Are you ready to relive the murders of everything you love? You are? Well then you’re ready to give a long, hard listen to our somewhat spoiler-free discussion of 2015’s killer camp homage flick “The Final Girls!” What started as a short episode (due to the aforementioned lack of spoilers) took more turns into strange territory than a couple of horny counselors looking to bump uglies. Leave your smartphone at home, so as to not confuse the 80s characters, cuz we’re heading to Camp Bloodbath on this episode of Horror Movie Night!

What better way to spend the weekend with your bandmates/b-fries than ruining a condo and being pursued by a guy with the most wildly impractical murder weapon imaginable? This week, the guys break open the junk food and cheap champagne to discuss 1987’s tongue-in-cheek slasher Slumber Party Massacre II! It’s a toe-tapper, just make sure you’re wearing shoes, because that carpet is just filthy… It’s Horror Movie Night!

This episode of Horror Movie Night transports us back to the fantastic world of 2002, when Matthew McConaughey’s career was on fire, Bill Paxton was making housewives quiver, and the abundance of boy bands was a sign of the end-times. Our guest Rich barely gets a word in edgewise and adds us to his God’s Hand Killer list of naughty children; we discuss where we would like those magic hands to be placed. In this episode of Horror Movie Night, we watch and discuss 1993’s slashfest Dr. Giggles. Matt laughs harder than he has since he gave Scott a physical, and Adam is so disappointed with his first viewing of Dr. Giggles he eats a half gallon of ice cream; luckily, Matt has his vintage stomach pump handy. Also, listen for a shocking revelation about Dr. Giggle’s connection to another popular horror franchise, and how he drives cops to the bottle in the process.

This week for Saint Mort’s Nostalgia Nightmare we’re going to be discussing New Year’s Evil which is now available on Blu-Ray from our friends at Scream Factory. Let’s see if this one drops the ball or not (ZING!)

I love Slasher films. LOVE them. Scream was my first major introduction to horror movies and turned me into someone who NEEDED to feed on horror movie content. I’ve made it a goal to see as many slasher films as possible and even own an unreasonably large amount of documentaries and text books on the subject.

91-44gDMPHL._SX425_

New Year’s Evil managed to avoid my sights for years. I didn’t even know it existed until it was briefly mentioned in Going To Pieces: The Rise and Fall of the Slasher Film (a must have for any serious horror fan). It wasn’t until last year I finally got to see it when it was briefly on Netflix Instant watch. I really wasn’t blown away by it, but at the time I watched it I was also in the middle of moving into my house so I had it on but I didn’t have my full attention on it.

This time I did all the chores I needed to have done, turned off the phone and really focused on the film. It is still one of the lesser 80’s slasher films, but it is however not a terrible movie.

The plot centers around Diane (aka Blaze), a TV personality hosting a televised New Years Eve Punk Rawk party. While taking callers on the air she begins talking to a man going by the name Evil. Evil threatens to kill a “Naughty Girl” she loves every time it strikes midnight in a different time zone. The cops are reluctant to take the threats seriously, assuming it’s a dark prank from the creepy crowd her shows tend to draw in. After each murder he calls back in and plays the recording of the murder over the air.

The film is unique as we know what Evil looks like within roughly 20 minutes of the movie. It’s not so much a mysterious whodunnit as much as it’s a WhoIsItAndWhy? The movie does contain some clever editing, some enjoyably cheesy music (specifically it’s theme song and the song Dumb Blondes), a cool mask for the killer to wear and a fairly unique premise. Even by 1980 the slasher film had already established itself as the “unknown, masked killer stalking high school girls from the trees”. This took a slightly more suspenseful twist which is interesting at least.

The biggest problem with the movie is how overwhelmingly mediocre it is. It’ll never be a movie good enough to recommend to a friend, or bad enough to watch with a group of friends. Dread Central’s Matt Serafini’s review reference to it as an ideal “late night horror fix” and I think that’s exactly the way to watch it. This would be a fun movie to have randomly discovered on USA in the 90’s.

Now as you’ve probably figured out I’m a Scream Factory fanboy. Even if I wasn’t being asked to review movies for them I’d still be a fanboy. I don’t think anyone at Scream Factory thinks that this is a masterpiece of slasher cinema but they still celebrate it as if it were by throwing in a new commentary track and a new collection of interviews with some of creators and stars behind the film.

While I’m not the biggest fan of New Year’s Evil, it’s still an interesting definitely worth watching if you’re a horror fan. Scream Factory has really put out a handful of other good (but painfully underrated slashers) like Terror Train, The Town That Dreaded Sundown, The Burning and Sleepaway Camp.

I love Troma. This is not an unknown fact. I’ve always loved Troma, since I was a young kid and watched Toxic Crusaders. The first thing that truly scared the shit out of me was when I was a little kid at my uncle’s house and I saw the cover of Toxic Avenger and immediately recognized Toxie. I put it on and was terrified by the mutation sequence as well as a scene where Toxie pokes someone’s eyeballs out.

In Junior High I rediscovered Troma when I borrowed my friend’s copy of the movie and watched the entire film. It was great. Tits, Gore… really nothing to not love. I began collecting all the Troma titles I could, buying all the Lloyd Kaufman books and on a couple occasions met Lloyd (I even had him as a guest on my podcast The Saint Mort Show).

That being said even I can say that their films aren’t all winners. Kaufman has a pretty flawless career, but most of the films that they acquire don’t reach the bar of excellence that Lloyd is able to achieve. For every Cannibal the Musical there’s a ten Newlydeads.

However one of the most impressive films in their collection is Mother’s Day, directed by Kaufman’s brother Charlie.  The film is a demented backwoods slasher film made in 1980 talks about a road trip from hell.

Three college friends take their yearly trip together. This year their trip is a camping trip, however it’s quickly ruined when they’re kidnapped by two boys and their demented mother. The rest of the film is the two brothers beating and raping the women based on their mother’s demands and guidance.

While the film was released after rape revenge films like Last House on the Left and I Spit on Your Grave, it was released the same year as Friday the 13th (ironically filmed at the same time and at the same location). Both films pushed the limits of slasher film gore at the time, however Friday the 13th’s wider release has lead to it being hailed as a masterpiece while the far more disturbing Mother’s Day has become nothing more than a unknown masterpiece in the Troma Library.

It’s definitely not for everybody, but if horror is for you, this is a must-see. Lloyd and the rest of the Troma team have also been praising the remake which comes to DVD tomorrow.
