After being heavily hinted at toward the end of last season, we now have our look at Diggle’s new costume.

arrow diggle

Aside from wanting to block out Professor Xavier’s telepathy, Diggle’s costume looks like it has some light armor and bears some resemblance to DC’s Guardian:

guardiandiggle

It is reported that we’ll in fact see Diggle’s new costume in the season four premiere. Executive producer Andrew Kriesberg had this to say:

“You’ll see him take on a leadership role on Team Arrow in Oliver’s absence, but Damien Darhk is going to prove to be much more than he can handle on his own, and that’s when Oliver is brought back to help.”

We also know that the big baddie for this season will be Damien Darhk, who is leading H.I.V.E. What’s even more interesting is that Darhk is said to be behind the murder of Diggle’s brother. Season four can’t come soon enough!

We’re here for another episode of FTWD, and I have to say that this episode was a little better than last week’s pilot. Luckily for us, the dosage of family drama and angst was toned down, but only a little. The episode title perfectly summed up tonight’s events as our set of characters seemed to be on the brink of getting out of the city the entire time, but were ultimately faced with some overwhelming obstacles.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead!

This episode picks up just about where we left off last week. The family is again in disarray amidst the impending zombie apocalypse. Unfortunately, not a lot happened this episode. The episode was action heavy and we got a glimpse of what Downtown Los Angeles was like just before the full-scale outbreak. Other than that, it’s everything fans of The Walking Dead can expect.

FTWD 1.2.5

One thing that did stand out this week was how prevalent “the virus” was for the second straight episode. This illness was heavily hinted at last week, but it seems to have little to do with the walker-plague we saw in TWD at the prison. By my count, there was maybe one confirmed walker who was turned simply because they died from the virus. That was Mr. Dawson. More on him later.

FTWD 1.2.3

At first, it was looking as if Alicia’s boyfriend, Matt, was succumbing to the virus when it was revealed he had been bitten.  Why he didn’t call 911 or seek medical attention after being bitten is beyond me. My only guess was he was bit at home and passed out or…

Regardless, I have to admit I felt a bit anxious in some of the sequences in downtown Los Angeles. Making viewers anxious is something the folks behind TWD and FTWD seem to be good at. This is supplemented by the lack of knowledge the people seem to have about what’s really going on. This was hit on again by Nick after returning home from killing a walker.

FTWD 1.2.2

It’s a shame that one of the people who was keen on the current events eventually turned. That was Mr. Dawson, who I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of next episode. His eerie cough foreshadowed what became of him. However, he and the police officer can’t be the only ones packing up getting ready to go. By the end of the episode, it would seem like the freeways are hopeless and roads leading in and out of the city are closed. Just take a look at this traffic map posted to AMC’s FTWD second screen experience:

FTWD-102-SS-23-ju980y87giou

With the next episode being two weeks away, I hope the show picks up the pace and shows the family navigating through society’s demise. This episode was a good start and it will be interesting to see just how the military and/or national guard deals with this crisis. If I’m being honest, Jericho did an excellent job of showing the demise of life as we know it and I would love it if FTWD incorporated some of the elements Jericho (spoilers) had when hinting at news of surviving cities, political leaders, and the rise of new nations. We can dream, can’t we?

That’s all for this week! Did I miss something? Having anything to add? Don’t be afraid to comment!

Fear the Walking Dead, the first spin-off series of The Walking Dead premiered last night. If you’re not an avid fan of The Walking Dead, fear not! This new series has a new cast, new setting, and little boundaries as to what direction the showrunners want to take. The city in peril this time is Los Angeles, which should make for some good fun. There are plenty of crazy things happening in East LA to begin with. Adding zombies to the mix, well, I’d probably just hang around El Chucho for safety.

WARNING: Spoilers Ahead!

The pilot starts with Nick Clark waking up in what appears to be a church-turned-drug-nest. Chris wanders around the church looking for his girlfriend Gloria when he stumbles upon her eating someone face. He promptly runs out of the church and is hit by a car. Civilians crowd around him and we now establish that FearTWD takes place shortly before the outbreak encompasses Los Angeles.

AMC promo FearTWD

Early in the episode, not much happens besides establishing our new set of characters. There are some hints here and there as to each character’s personal history and their professions, something we never got right away with most of TWD’s characters. We also get a couple of hints at what’s to come, specifically with principal noticing an increasing number of student absences due to illness. This is interesting considering that we know very little on what caused the initial outbreak. We do know that in TWD, some walkers died of a flu before turning. These walkers were easily identified by their eyes.

Flu Walker TWD

Continuing on this subject, we got our first good look at what a walker looks like during the initial outbreak. Despite the “sickness” that’s spreading throughout the city, it does not appear this situation and the walker flu we saw in TWD are related. The most telling piece of evidence is all in the eyes.

FearTWD 1.1.3

Furthermore, Calvin looked more like Morgan’s wife after she turned. It’s possible that we’ll be seeing lot of walkers like this due to the fact that their flesh isn’t necessarily rotting…yet.

TWD morgan wife

Early in the episode, Madison catches a student bringing a knife to school because he’s afraid of, well, zombies. The student also mentions that there are reports in five states. In fact, the school is a significant host to foreshadowing what’s to come. Everything from the student, the principal who cares about the school’s attendance, to the lesson on man versus nature. Travis, who is teaching a lesson on Jack London, goes on to state that “nature always wins.”

FearTWD 1.1.1

Going to the freeway sequence, I found it interesting that Madison tries to use her cell phone. Is it possible there was something more involved to keep the public from calling out? If so, why was the helicopter able to keep their feed going long enough to get footage to get onto the internet? By the next morning, all of the kids were watching the incident on their phones. The news break even prompted the district to shorten the school day entirely.

FearTWD 1.1.2

In any case, reports have been popping up on the internet. The kid being able to deliver the stat that there have been cases in five states is evidence of this. As more and more cases are seen in Los Angeles, it’ll be interesting to see how people prepare for the city’s doom.

Literary Reference!

FearTWD 1.1.4

When Nick’s mom and Travis visited the shooting gallery (the church), they found a book Nick had been reading. Winesburg, Ohio is a collection of twenty two stories mostly centered around one protagonist, George Willard. It was written between 1915 and 1916. Many of the stories deal with isolation and loneliness, both of which attribute to what Nick is going through. Furthermore, the stories reflect on Willard’s increasing independence, culminating with his departure from the town itself. In FearTWD, it’s clear Nick and his family will have no choice BUT to leave.

That’s all for now! Think I’ve missed something? Don’t be afraid to comment! See you next week!

We have our first look at one of the most anticipated characters on this season of The Flash!

Flash_JayGarrick

Granted, it’s not as up close and clear as we’d like it to be, but this tribute to The Flash #123 is pretty great! I doubt the show will take any more cues from that issue other than this iconic staging. As you can see above, The Flash returns October 6th at its regular time.

That’s it! The second season of True Detective has wrapped up into a nicely packaged entertaining experience. Many disliked this season as a whole and attribute their resentment to the confusion they felt throughout the eight episodes. Luckily for you, you can lay off the True Detective recaps after this week. Let’s get started.

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

When the second season of True Detective premiered, I didn’t expect critiques this polarizing. One thing I’ve found to be true in people who disliked season two is that they seemed to have adored season one continually compared the two with each passing episode. I believe this to be the first mistake when looking at this season of True Detective. With this season having an entirely new cast, set in an entirely new location, with an entirely different story, I feel that we should take this season as a standalone piece, just as it is presented. There’s no fun in rehashing elements of the first season. For those of you who found this season to be a little too confusing, I understand. Looking at it objectively, there were a few instances where I could see viewers could have a hard time navigating the all of the plot points and names. However, with a little digging, anyone could figure out what was going on. Isn’t the challenge of solving the mystery one of the reasons why we tune in to True Detective in the first place?

TD 2x8 1

Still, anyone who found themselves almost completely lost should have enjoyed this episode a lot more than any of the others that came along this season. Omega Station wound up all of the mysteries that we’ve been presented with and took care of significant lose ends. For example, we finally go a resolution on Caspere’s murder, the definitive story behind the diamonds, and the crow’s head. Some of the smaller questions, such as why Caspere owned a crow’s head in the first place, is left up to the viewers to interpret their own answer.

TD 2x8 2

Each of the four leads got their resolutions and completed their arcs, with Ani having the most drastic change in character. Aside from the Caspere investigation, this season was also a story about people trying to find their way in a world where odds are stacked against them. It seemed throughout the season that each of the four main chracteres were struggling with their journey in becoming a good person. There’s several instances in which Velcoro demonstrated that he wants to be a better man for his son. Woodrugh makes a similar statement to his fiancé in the car as he drives her to the motel in episode 7. In the car, Woodrugh remarks that he’s just “trying to be a good man.”

TD 2x7 x

Frank echoes this desire too in trying to provide a life free from crime for his wife, Jordan. This was especially evident in the scene that took place at the train station in which he promised to see her in two weeks or less. For Ani, the journey to becoming a good person was plagued by her traumatic childhood. It seemed that no matter how hard she tried, she could never escape the anger that her childhood left her with. This was made clear through her relationships with her sister and father. By the end of the season, Ani had made peace with who she was and embraced it. This is especially clear towards the end of the season finale when we see her holster her knife.

TD 2x8 4

Each of these characters were constantly moving towards this goal of redeeming and it wasn’t just limited to the leads. This attribute extended to minor characters, like Ani’s father and sister. Everyone was running away from their past and on a journey to find their identities. This concept of journeying was also juxtaposed with Caspere’s investigation having a lot to do with the high-speed rail system. Some of the most significant scenes took place at landmarks that had to do with transportation. In the season finale for instance, we had the pivotal scene that took place in a newly built Anaheim train station.

TD 2x8

This season also contained some supernatural elements, most notably in the form of the dream Velcoro had at the start of episode three. If you think back to the dream, Velcoro’s father sits across the table from him and tells a story of how Velcoro is running through the woods with tall trees. His father also mentions that the people chasing Velcoro are giants. This was ultimately how Velcoro would meet his end, trees and all.

TD 2x8 3

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this season of True Detective. There were some minor things that bothered me throughout the season, such as Woodrugh’s death, but the season as a whole proved to be satisfactory in the end, even without the storybook ending.

Still have lingering questions? Sound off below! A third season of True Detective is still unconfirmed, however, if there is a third season, we’ll be back with episode recaps!

Wow. Just wow. From the moment the teaser trailer for HBO’s 2016 show Westworld started I was hooked. No hyperbole here folks, I’m fucking sold.

The show stars Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Rodrigo Santoro, Shannon Woodward, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Ben Barnes, Jimmi Simpson, Clifton Collins, Jr., Simon Quarterman and Angela Sarafyan.

Westworld is based off of the 1973 film of the same name, which just so happens to be Michael Crichtons first feature film.

HBO says their newest show is

A dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin.

Like I said up top there, I was instantly sold. The vibe I got right away really checked all my boxes and I cannot wait for this show to start.

Westworld airs on HBO sometime in 2016. BUT, you can get a first look at it TONIGHT just before the season two finale of True Detective.

Actor Keiynan Lonsdale becomes the newest addition to The Flash family and is set to play Wally West. You should know, Wally West is set to be a series regular and will not appear in just an episode or two. As we all know, Wally is a nephew to Iris West. However, since we haven’t seen or heard of any siblings belonging to Iris, we can suspect the relationship to change a little. It’ll be interesting to find out how they go about this and even more interesting to see if Flash and Kid Flash take on Professor Zoom.

wallywest2

You can watch the The Flash‘s San Diego Comic-Con sizzle reel below. Season two is set to premiere October 6 at 8 pm!

We finally have the actor who will portray the immortal villain. As fans know, Savage will be the main villain the ‘Legends’ will face while skipping through time. What’s new is Savage is set to appear in Arrow/Flash crossever episodes BEFORE appearing in the ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ run during Arrow‘s and Flash‘s midseason break.

Casper Crump

Fans should be excited to see just how the ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ is set up within the first few episodes of Arrow and The Flash.

The DCTV list of heroes keeps growing! Falk Hentschel has been cast as Hawkman and will appear primarily in Legends of Tomorrow. According to the official announcement, Hawkman will also appear in crossover episodes of The Flash and Arrow. This is a key piece of info as it is reported that Hawkman will appear in crossover episodes BEFORE Legends of Tomorrow.

FalkHentschel_hawkman

It’s possible we’ll get an origin of sorts during the crossover event. More importantly, I hope we eventually get an interaction between Hawkman and Vibe like this one:

The penultimate episode for season 2 has arrived. The episode did a good job wrapping up some lose ends while advancing towards to what seems to be a violent finale. Let’s get started!

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Ani

When we last left Ani, she had just killed a security guard, who tried choking her out, and rescued her missing person from the party. Our true detectives also secured papers that linked the mayor’s son, Osip, and members of Catalyst to the land deal Frank wanted in on. It’s also the ammo Davis needed to help bring corruption charges to city leaders.

TD 2x7 26

Needless to say, the party had a negative effect on Ani. Right off the bat, Ani confesses that she’s been waiting her entire life for man to put hands on her, giving her the excuse to kill him. This is obviously connected to what happened to her as a child, and even goes on to state, “When I ran out of the woods and they found me… ” This confused Velcoro, who was listening, and upset Ani even more once she realized she was actually talking about her experience with someone else. It’s perhaps the first time Ani has ever opened up to someone on this level and an emotional connection is established. Ani then tries to make a move on Velcoro, but he declines, stating that she’s out of his league.

The next day, Ani talks to her missing person, Emily. Emily gives some information on the pictures that kicked off the missing persons case and the search for the blue diamonds. As Emily explains it, Tasha, who was supposedly Caspere’s favorite girl to take to the parties, took pictures from the inside. She also took the pictures of the blue diamonds all in an attempt to build a portfolio to use as blackmail.

TD 2x7 x

Ultimately, Tasha ended up in the cabin we saw a couple of episodes back. In that same episode, forensics said that the blood belonged to a female, which we now know was likely Tasha. Building off this, it was Caspere’s coordinates that lead Ani and Woodrugh to the cabin, meaning that Caspere was present during the torture. Furthermore, Ani and Velcoro eventually learn that the small girl who hid while her parents were executed during the LA riots in ’92 is now in the party circuit, courtesy of Caspere.

TD 2x7 16

Woodrugh eventually informs Ani that she’s wanted for questioning in the death of the security guard she killed at the party. The situation she’s found herself in makes her realize that she needs to protect her family and sends them off to lay low for a while. She seems to make peace with everyone in this scene, even her father. She sees them off and prepares for the future.

TD 2x7 13

At the end of the episode, we also see a crosscut of an exchange between Velcoro and Ani. Both seem to connect on a more intimate level and consummate their newfound understanding of each other. I expect this to play a key role in the showdown next week.

Velcoro

Velcoro is also reeling from the party we saw in last week’s episode. While Velcoro does not have a heavy role in tonight’s episode, he is still very much involved. Velcoro informs Frank of Blake’s dealings with Osip and explains everything he learned at the party. This makes Frank very angry.

TD 2x7 22

Velcoro also makes the attempt to go into the city to hand the papers off to Davis only to find her corpse sitting in the car. She doesn’t look to have put up a fight, leading me to believe that she must’ve known whoever killed her.

TD 2x7 15

The prime suspect would probably be Burris, since he seemed to be everywhere this episode. Velcoro has ultimately been set up, again, probably by Burris, and is forced to go into hiding back at the motel.

TD 2x7 5

Eventually, he opens up to Ani, saying that he’s worried about what his son will think of him. Ani responds with, “You are a good man.”

Frank

After learning of Blake’s deception, Frank takes care of him.

TD 2x7 14

Frank also learns of everything being planned against him, which leads him to create a plan to take revenge and get out of the country. Frank secures money, plane tickets, fake passports, and some heavy firepower.

TD 2x7 12 TD 2x7 11 TD 2x7 7

It’s unlikely that we’ll see the Russians help out next week, though I wouldn’t be surprised if they sent some guys to lend a hand to Frank’s cause.

TD 2x7 4

On top of that, Frank burns everything the Russians have purchased over the last six months, effectively burning everything he’s spent his entire life working for. He’s also essentially burning his past and is on track to becoming a different person. There’s no going back after this, and he knows that.

Woodrugh

Unfortunately, Woodrugh met his end his episode. I was rooting for him, too. After getting blackmailed into taking a meeting with the mysterious person behind the text messages he was receiving, Woodrugh uncovers Burris’s connection with Black Mountain, Catalyst, and Ben Caspere. Before all that, Woodrugh hides his mom and fiancé in a small motel. At first, neither of them want to be there, but later on, it seems the mom and the fiancé bonded.

TD 2x7 20

Woodrugh then runs some errands at the police station where he figures out the Caspere-Holloway-Burris-Teague-blue diamonds connection.

TD 2x7 19 TD 2x7 17

Here, Woodrugh also finds out that Ani is wanted for questioning. All of this takes place as he’s being spied on by Burris. The framing of this shot is a foreshadowing of how the two will meet again later in the episode. Expanding on this, it is now clear that it was Burris who wore the Crow’s head when he shot Velcoro. The shotgun used pellets only available to cops. Now that we know that, it’s also clear Burris dumped Caspere’s body on the side of the road, and may even had a hand in killing Caspere. According to Blake, the killers are still unknown.

TD 2x7 18

It’s likely Burris tailed Woodrugh to the Black Mountain meeting, although it was awfully convenient that he’d just be behind the door Woodrugh comes out of. Maybe the building Woodrugh found himself in had only one door?

While waiting for Woodrugh to return, the mom and fiancé watch Splendor in the Grass. The film was released in 1961 and tells the tale of a forbidden love between a young girl and a man belonging to a powerful family. The forbidden love concept is one last callback to the strange Oedipus complex Woodrugh and his mom shared, but more importantly, I believe the last line of the film resonates a stronger message about where Woodrugh’s fiancé and mother will end up. The last line of the film is a voiceover and is as follows: “Though nothing can bring back the hour of splendor in the grass of glory in the flower; We will grieve not, rather find Strength in what remains behind.”

TD 2x7 2

Well, there’s only one great thing left behind from Woodrugh’s legacy, and that’s his child. This notion is further reinforced by the last image Woodrugh’s fiancé sees after his death, which is a scene in the film in which one of the characters is holding an infant.

Overall, I thought this was a solid episode. I don’t know if Ani and Velcoro’s actions sit well with me. Earlier in the episode, Ani tells Emily that maybe she was not put on the Earth “just for fucking,” yet, Ani was sexualized right off the bat in episode one and ends up having sex with yet another peer working a case with her. I guess we’ve seen Ani be condescending and a little bit of a hypocrite all season when it comes to dealing with her sister’s sexuality, but it would have been nice to see Ani’s character make progress in that regard. I would’ve been happy if all we got was the encounter between Velcoro and Ani at the start of this episode. Still, maybe her character is progressing in that she is finally having sex with someone she has a true emotional connection with. Also, the scene was done tastefully.

Predictions

With only one episode left, I think we can all expect a ton of shooting, a ton of driving, and maybe an explosion or two. The finale will also run for 90 minutes. We’ll perhaps see Burris in his Crowman outfit, as well as find out who’s behind this empire. It can’t be the mayor, Holloway, Burris, Osip, Blake, or the head of Catalyst. It’s obvious they all answer to someone. Still, I believe whoever’s at the head is someone we’ve seen before. That leaves some wild guesses, including Velcoro’s father, the bartender at Frank and Velcoro’s meeting place, the two Mexicans who wanted to be besties with Frank, Ani’s father, Pitler, or even Ani’s ex-partner.

TD 2x5_17

As far as character deaths go, I can see Velcoro sacrificing himself for Ani and Frank. With Davis dead, and the details of this case leaking to the public, Velcoro won’t have much to live for other than to become a symbol of heroism for his son. Ani might end up quitting the force to pursue a different career path. A private investigator sounds right for her, but we already saw that in Marty from season one. After the exchange, and perhaps snagging a few million from the deal, Frank will be able to take his wife and live off the grid for the remainder of his life, should he choose to do so. I also wouldn’t be surprised if some of that money made its way to Woodrugh’s mom and fiancé.

Got any theories of your own? Feel free the share! Until then, see you next week!

Five new promotional posters have been released for ABC’s The Muppets. The new television series will take you behind the scenes of Miss Piggy’s late-night talk show on which Kermit is the executive producer, Fozzie is her sidekick, and Gonzo is the head writer. It will be a more adult take on the Muppets and make use of The Office style cut-aways and witty pop culture references that we’ve grown to expect from the franchise.

The Muppets premieres Tuesday, Sept. 22 on ABC.

Things sure are ramping up to the season finale. Building off of last Sunday’s episode, we find our true detectives finally delving into the parties we’ve been hearing about all season.

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Ray

We immediately start the episode with the confrontation we’ve been waiting all week for:

TD 2x6_1

While it was nice to see Velcoro and Frank make amends, I felt it was a little too easy. Although, it’s quite possible that both Velcoro and Frank put too much blind trust into each other, and they know it.  As Frank puts it, Velcoro is possibly the only friend he has left, to which Velcoro remarks how “fucked up” that scenario would be.

Velcoro leaves with the promise that Frank will look up who gave false information as to who raped Velcoro’s then wife. Let’s just say Frank is telling the truth and was deceived all those years ago. Who would set up Frank, and ultimately Velcoro? Is it connected to the organization that did Caspere in? Another thing I wanted to bring up is the sudden appearance of a prime suspect in his wife’s case.

TD 2x6_4

Velcoro visits him at the jail and threatens him enough to scare anyone, innocent or not. The suspect is also conveniently suffering from a some sort of condition in which his memory fails him regularly.  Is it possible that this sudden appearance is meant to detract Velcoro from his work on the Caspere case? It wouldn’t be the first time one of the detectives has had their personal lives put on display by the group that killed Caspere. Fans won’t have to think too far back to remember Teague shadowing Woodrugh before the shootout.

Eventually Velcoro ends up back home, alone, and begins to go on a binge. He drinks, does coke, works out, and eventually comes to the realization that he can’t be in his son’s life anymore.

TD 2x6_9

It’s somber moment, but Velcoro ultimately makes his decision with the best intentions in mind. He wants his son to be at peace and not be in the midst of a custody battle in which he may find out unsavory aspects about where exactly he comes from. Velcoro promises that he will forfeit the custody battle if his son is to never learn about his real father.

Frank

TD 2x6_8

After previously contesting the idea of adopting a child, claiming that it would be taking on someone else’s problems, Frank transcends into a sort of father figure to a former employee’s son. This comes after Frank pays a visit to Stan’s widow. It was here that Frank learned that Blake is perhaps more deceitful than he anticipated. The widow reveals that soon after Stan’s death, Blake came by asking her what Stan knew and if he knew anything about his eventual murder.  As we know now, Blake is also working with the same group that throws the orgy parties. These are the same parties Caspere attended. This particular party we saw tonight was also attended by the Osip and the rep from Catalyst.

TD 2x6_10

Eventually Frank gets a lead on the woman who pawned some of Caspere’s items that would eventually lead to the shootout. According to the woman, a cop paid her $500, plus whatever she made by pawning the items so long as she did it. She described the cop as tall, white, and slender. Blake is a likely suspect. Unfortunately we’ll have to wait to find the answer because Frank’s lead was killed by a pair of Mexicans who seem to either have a gross misunderstanding about what exactly’s been going on in Vinci, or potential partners with the organization that killed Caspere.

TD 2x6_16

Cabin

The cabin makes another brief appearance in this episode. Last week, I suggested that the chair was the same that Caspere sat in as he was tortured and/or ultimately killed. Tonight, one of the detectives mentioned that the blood belonged to a female, which makes sense, but it was also mentioned that the entire room is contaminated and the results may not prove to be as fruitful as Ani and Woodrugh would hope.

TD 2x6_2

Also in last week’s episode, it was revealed that Pitler was a regular surgeon that specialized in operating on women with the purpose of making them look more attractive at these orgy-like parties. This cabin may have very well been Pitler’s operating room.

Woodrugh

Not much happens with Woodrugh internally, but he does seem to be the most solid detective of the bunch. In this episode, Woodrugh further investigates the origin of the blue diamonds. His search first leads him to an insurance company that tells him that the diamonds were stolen during the LA riots in 1992.

TD 2x6_5

This leads him to track down the cop that took the case in ’92. During the conversation, the cop mentions that whoever did the robbery were trained professionals. Parents who owned the shop where killed execution style in front of their children who were hiding in a cabinet.

TD 2x6_6

The cop was obviously shaken by the case and really didn’t want to talk about it. From the sound of it, it would be right to assume that whoever committed the robbery is tied to the group or organization that would come to kill Caspere.

Ani

TD 2x6_7

If there was ever a sequence to make us feel uncomfortable, it was Ani’s experience throughout this episode. First, I think it’s important to point out that Ani’s cover for attending the party was Athena. Ani posed as her sister and assumed her identity in order to gain entry to the mansion party. I’ll go into the psychoanalysis later and we’ll instead focus on Ani’s drug-induced trip.

Ani’s behavior to sexual situations has been highlighted a few times throughout this season. We know about her office romances, we’ve seen her browse a porn site, and let’s not forget she tried something kinky with her then boyfriend at the start of the season. As to what she did, well, no one really knows for sure, but you can use your imagination.

During her drug trip, Ani begins to have vivid visions involving memories of when she was a little girl. She begins to see a man around the mansion.

TD 2x6_19

The man, who we can safely assume sexually assaulted her, appears to have come from the commune that she grew up in. Thus, we now know why she places hostility toward her father and the life she left behind.

What really stuck out to me was the appearance of a crow in her vision. If you think back to earlier in the season, the crow mask was seen in the backseat next to Caspere’s dead body in the first episode. Then, the crow’s head made a second appearance not too long after in a scene where Velcoro was shot a point-blank range with buckshot rounds. Could the crow in the vision be alluding to a relationship between her father, the commune, and the group responsible for Caspere’s murder?

TD 2x6_20

Eventually, Ani, her mission person, Velcoro and Woodrugh escape the mansion, but not before taking all of the contracts with signatures with them.

TD 2x6_21

Psychoanalysis

Larua Mulvey, a film theorist, came up with the concept of the “male gaze.” The concept is simple: In films, especially classical era films, the male gaze is present whenever a male is gawking at a female. The male gaze also has three different gazes: The person behind the camera, the characters portrayed in the film, and us as spectators. I’m finding this sort of psychoanalytic technique is being used mostly to make audiences feel uncomfortable. It was heavily present in the later seasons of Mad Men and is a big part of tonight’s episode.

First, the male gaze is present when Ani walks in with the other girls. The room is full of men gawking at them. Ultimately, this makes Ani rather uncomfortable. It’s unusual to see Ani like this since we’ve seen her dominate conversations and rooms throughout the season.

TD 2x6_13TD 2x6_14

The composition of these shots was also similar to Silence of the Lambs. Both share a dominating female character put in an uneasy situation. The following shots from Silence of the Lambs comes at a time when Clarice Starling must tell all of the officers, who happen to be male, to leave the room so that a body can be examined properly. It is another example of the male gaze.

Silence1 Silence

Mulvey also has some writings on scopophilia. Scopophilia is the act of taking gratification in looking. Perhaps the best example of this concept being put to good use is Michael Powell’s 1960 classic Peeping TomPeeping Tom is a film in which a serial killer records his victims final moments as he kills them. Each of the victims are females and the entire film is rather strange. Scopophilia is also present in Hitchock’s Rear Window. The film’s protagonist becomes obsessed with peering into his neighbors lives by pointing his camera at their windows. Scopophilia is more closely tied to voyeurism when placed in a sexual context.

"I've been watching you, Miss."
“I’ve been watching you, Miss.”

Each of these concepts are present in this mansion sequence. The voyeuristic nature pops up when an interested male takes Ani around and stops in front of a threesome taking place in front of them. The man promptly says, “Oh yes, here we are. You care to watch for a while? I do so enjoy the natural state.”

The sequence is further off-putting due to the musical score too. The score was unlike anything in the series so far. It’s classical undertones made the mansion feel bigger, yet gave the feeling of isolation whenever we saw Ani walking from room to room. It was almost as if the shows creators took cues from classical era cinema by dressing incorporating the use of bowties, dresses, and atmosphere just to throw us off.

Overall, I thought this was a solid episode. I’m thinking next week, we’ll probably see Katherine Davis killed, leaving our detectives extremely vulnerable for the season finale in just two weeks.

Did I miss anything? Want to share some thoughts? Please do! Thanks for stopping by!

Fox announced today the addition of two agents who will appear in one episode of this six-part series. Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under) will take on the roll of Agent Einstein. Einstein is described as “sharp” and “confident.” Robbie Amell (The Flash) will be playing Agent Miller, who will have both “smart” and “smooth” characteristics.

Ambrose _Amell

Some have speculated that these two will play Scully and Mulder in a flashback, but that won’t be the case according to Fox. Both will appearing in present day.

The X-Files is set to premier January 2016!

You read that right! While the suit looks mostly the same, the white emblem is more than enough to get fans excited. This is coming off numerous announcements including the casting of Captain Cold’s father and other casting news announced at San Diego Comic-Con two weeks ago.

The show’s executive producer, Greg Berlanti, has previously noted that the show will delve more into comic book storylines. This change in the emblem is a start!

Who do you think will inspire the emblem change? Barry or Cisco?

We’re back with another True Detective recap! This episode certainly had a faster pace than the previous few. We hit a time jump, by sixty-six days, since the shootout that happened at the end of Down Will Come. The plot has moved forward and we’re finally starting to see some things begin to connect. I won’t summarize the entire episode, but will instead focus on some of the more important aspects.

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Ray Velcoro

Sixty-six days hasn’t really changed Velcoro. Sure, he quit his job, gave into Frank’s offer of being hired as muscle, but his priority hasn’t changed. Once again, Velcoro’s son is the center of his attention. Since quitting the force, money has become an issue and now, more than ever, it would seem Velcoro is afraid of losing his son.

TD 2x5_9

Eventually, we find Velcoro sitting across from his ex and her legal team. The judge orders a paternity test, which angers Velcoro because he knows he’s not the biological father. After the session, Velcoro’s lawyer informs him to secure more cash to fight for his son.

TD 2x5_14

Velcoro goes to Frank looking to earn some more money. Frank asks him to shadow a suspected mole within his group. During this surveillance, Velcoro stumbles upon the mayor’s son, Pitler, and Frank’s associate in a meeting to inspect girls. It would seem as if these are the girls who attend parties as escorts up north. This was first mentioned by Bezzerides’ sister. Later in this same episode, Bezzerides asks her sister if she can get her into one of these parties.

TD 2x5_15

The next day, Velcoro meets with Bezzerides, Woodrugh, and Katherine Davis, the state attorney. After wanting nothing to do with it, Velcoro’s arm is twisted by Davis. She informs him that she can help him keep custody of his son. Velcoro then states that they should all start with the search for a camera and a hard drive that was never recovered during the original investigation. The only thing missing from the meeting was Jack Shephard screaming, “WE HAVE TO GO BACK!!!”

TD 2x5_18

Each of the investigators begin to depart, but not before Velcoro learns something about his past. Davis informs Velcoro that the man who raped his the mother of his child had been captured and his DNA matched with evidence from the assault. This is big because, up until this point, we thought Velcoro took his own revenge with the help of Frank. Frank set him up.

TD 2x5_19

The Hard Drive

Now that Velcoro, Woodrugh, and Bezzerides are on back on the case, Caspere’s hard drive has become more important than ever. During Pitler’s interrogation, which was conducted by Velcoro, it is mentioned that Caspere and his associates would regularly throw parties for wealthy individuals. These individuals presumably had interactions with some of the escorts brought in for the parties, only, Caspere and his associates would record them so that they would in turn have dirt on whoever showed up.

TD 2x5_23

One can now assume that this hard drive, and its contents, may have lead Caspere to his demise. In any case, Velcoro and company aren’t the only ones looking for it. Catalyst, the land firm dealing out plots of land for the high speed rail system Frank was involved in has interest in the hard drive too.

TD 2x5_22

In fact, he’s offered Frank the chance of his lifetime: The land he wants for the hard drive. It’s going to be interesting considering Frank and Velcoro won’t be on good terms.

Detective Teague

TD 2x5_21

Teague, if you remember, wasn’t really a team player. Now, we know why. It’s apparent Teague planted the watch for Woodrugh to find that would eventually set up the shootout at the end of the last episode. We also learened that Teague was conducting a side investigation, possibly covering up tracks. Anyone who had their suspicions of him should feel justified, especially after we saw him spying on Woodrugh in the third episode.

TD 2x5_29

Unfortunately for Teague, he didn’t know just how expendable he was to his boss. Of course, Bezzerides, Woodrugh, and Velcoro were supposed to die with him.

TD 2x5_30

Assorted Musings

It would appear as though Bezzerides dropped her E-cig habits.

TD 2x5_25

Pictures of George Bush with the Vinci mayor return!

TD 2x5_13 TD 2x5_12

During the scene in which Woodrugh visits mother with an Oedipus complex, a picture of her as a dancer can be seen in the background.

TD 2x5_4

The shack location may be where Caspere was tortured and killed. If you think back to when Velcoro and Bezzerides inspected Caspere’s body, you’ll remember that Caspere’s genitals were blown off. He probably sat in this chair right after it happened.

TD 2x5_27

Regardless, this shack is certainly not where the car carrying Caspere’s body departed from in the first episode. If you remember, the car departed from an apartment close to the 101 in Hollywood. Also, judging by the abandonment and lack of clean-up, it would seem as though this shack is not a regular location to conduct their business.

TD 2x5_26

Last, but certainly not least, a popular theory is that the bartender may be a big part of whoever our true detectives are chasing.

Back when LOST was on its original run, I did recaps here on Geekscape. The purpose was to gather all of the information viewers might have missed and put it in one place. It was also meant to create a discussion. You don’t have to agree with me, in fact, I would like to invite you to share your thoughts on this episode below in the comment section! In any case, we can all agree that with each episode of True Detective, there’s a lot to unpack, so let’s get started.

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Fertility

First, I’d like to address a central theme in this episode. Through each of our protagonists plots this episode, the fertility motif appeared and reappeared. The first sight of it came within the first minutes of the episode in the form of Frank’s avocado trees. Frank begins to get angry when he learns that his avocado trees aren’t growing. The gardner tells him that seeds are there, but suggests the problem may be the dirt. There is something wrong with the fertilization.

“I paid for fucking avocado trees and now you tell me 'can’t grow?'”
“I paid for fucking avocado trees and now you tell me ‘can’t grow?’”

This scene was interesting because it foreshadowed issues Frank and his partner will be having for presumably for the rest of the season, assuming she survives the season.

TD 2x4_3

The fertility motif especially follows Frank from scene to scene. The bakery sequence is evidence of this. Frank visits some acquaintances with the hopes of establishing some new cashflow after losing everything as a result of Caspere’s disappearance. The scene begins with this shot:

TD 2x4_9

Even appearing the background are children’s birthday party decorations and candy.

TD 2x4_10

Sticking with Frank on his search for money, the show takes us to an apartment complex managed by a man who Frank seems to know from past dealings. Again, the scene is preempted with a shot of children playing in the grass/dirt.

TD 2x4_13

Frank walks past the children playing as he makes his way to the managers office.

TD 2x4_14

Okay, so Frank’s plot is consistent with the motif. We get it. So we’ll move to Woodrugh, whose connection with the motif is obvious enough. In this episode, we find out Woodrugh is going to be a dad and thus professes his love to his ex-girlfriend claiming that this was the best thing that could have happened to the both of them.

TD 2x4_17

The motif is also present in Velcoro an Bezzerides’ plot in tracking Caspere’s whereabouts. Caspere’s GPS information leads them out to an area that has not been developed. After getting an official from the Environmental Protection Agency to their location, they learn that the land is bad. In fact, most of the farmers have left and families are giving up.

TD 2x4_19

Sure, the problem with the land not taking is pretty much the same situation we saw Frank in the start of the episode, but the motif still fits.

Woodrugh

Woodrugh had a tough time this episode. After a few weeks of guessing whether or not he was gay, Woodrugh sorta figured it out himself when we woke up in his former military squadmate’s apartment wearing nothing but his underwear. Woodrugh doesn’t remember how or when he got there, but he did sleep with his friend.

TD 2x4_4

Woodrugh immediately becomes disturbed and embarrassed. He leaves hastily and takes a cab to his motorcycle. Now, here’s an interesting scene. In the cap, Woodrugh begins to cry. We can assume it’s because he’s reacting to the events that unfolded the previous night, and maybe this is just me, but when Woodrugh’s tear begins to roll down his cheek, it almost seems as if we can hear a woman screaming as if he’s remembering something from his time with Black Mountain.

TD 2x4_5

In the previous episode, Woodrugh explains to this same friend that he’s moved past what he’s done while working for Black Mountain and that his friend should do the same. It is at this point where his friend begins to confess that he thinks about him, which prompts Woodrugh to react violently and storm off. I’m only guessing here, but is it possible Woodrugh killed women and children in the Middle East?

In any case, once Woodrugh gets out of the cab to find his motorcycle is missing and it starts to set him over the edge.

TD 2x4_6

As Woodrugh approaches his hotel, he is greeted by a mob of reporters. They instantly start to ask him about his ties with Black Mountain and specific events he may have been involved in.

TD 2x4_7

Interestingly enough, one reporter shouts something about Woodrugh’s allegations to a history of abuse against women. Woodrugh takes off into full sprint, but no one really chases him. Were the reporters really there?

TD 2x4_8

As he further falls into a hole, Woodrugh’s bout with identity becomes the focal point of his troubles. After being picked up by Ray, Woodrugh confesses that he’s “I did everything they said, man. Army, PD, it doesn’t matter. I’ve been listening to them for so fucking long, I don’t even know who the fuck I am.”

TD 2x4_12

All the Best Cowboys…

Velcoro’s daddy issues make another appearance. In the previous episode, we were treated to Velcoro’s dad, who seems to be disenchanted with the LAPD and his son. Having been a former cop, Velcoro’s dad reminisces about the old days of the police force and condemns Velcoro’s career and the current police force.  However, Velcoro still sees his father as a hero, regardless of what he thinks in present day. There are two major events that make me believe this:

1. In the previous episode, during Velcoro’s dream, Velcoro’s father is dressed in his uniform. This is symbolic of the way Velcoro sees his dad and he desperately tries to live up to his standards. Unfortunately for Velcoro, he’s feels as though he’s failing. This is evidenced by the fact that in the dream, the father refers to Velcoro as a boy running from giants.

2. Velcoro sees his dad’s police badge in the trash can and takes it out. He asks then asks if he can take the badge to give to his own son. The passing of the badge occurs this episode.

TD 2x4_21

Velcoro wants his son to see him as Velcoro sees his own father: A hero. The badge signifies that and chooses that to be his parting gift, as Velcoro prepares to surrender his visitation rights.

Shootout

It’s obvious now Vinci’s mayor and police chief are closer to the people behind Caspere’s murder than we may have previously thought. While they did assign Velcoro to keep tabs on the investigation, his life was essentially put on the line and in turn revealed how expendable he is to the mayor and chief. It’s going to get interesting tonight and I expect our true detectives to become tighter knit.

True Detective is arguably one of the best television programs on the air right now. It’s short, eight episode, first season kept fans of the show begging for more. WELL FOLKS, here is a little tiny teaser for you!

Season Two airs June 21st on HBO, and stars Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch.

WaywardPines1

A new show coming to TV will be the creepy and mysterious, Wayward Pines, which is based on the international bestselling book series by Blake Crouch. Executive producer, Donald De Line, explained how the show was conceived after he read the book and loved it; he said he could not put it down. De Line felt the material was “better served over a longer period of time” because there is too much for just a movie. The other big force behind this show is M. Night Shyamalan who liked the books even more because he could not guess the twist.

Reed Diamond, who plays Harold Balinger, chimed in that he read the book in one sitting. He also explained that early on you find out what is going on and the complexities just expand instead of a long build up only to deflate. After watching the pilot during the panel, the show is definitely intriguing and it is nice to hear that you get some clarification early on instead of being strung along blindly. Tim Griffin, who plays Adam Hassler, added that the show is “very generous on exposing secrets early on.”

waywardpines2

They started to make the show after the first book came out and you learn the truth of what is going on around episode 5, but episode 10 will be just as exciting. It is great to hear that they plan to keep the audience engaged while still satisfying curiosities. For those who are wondering about how closely the show follows the book, the “overall truth is similar to the book” according to Donald De Line. This is a show where they have already outlined where the final episode would go and planned in advance instead of just writing as they went.

waywardpines5

When you are basing a show or movie on a book there is an easy way to find out what most likely will happen. Reed Diamond joked that he felt like the only actor who read the book. He also commented on hearing interviews with cast members from Game of Thrones who have said they do not know what will happen to their character. Which surprised him because “you can find out!” Diamond also added that what the characters think and say are different and that is fun for an actor – lot of subtext to play with. Tim Griffin mentioned another talented actor on the show, Terrence Howard, did not want to know anything about his character. Griffin said he started out the same but then he got desperate and cornered Shyamalan to find out what happens to his character. All of the directors on the show were helpful to the actors by pointing them in the right direction without being too obvious and ruining the surprise.

waywardpines4

This show was a first, in a way, for its creators because Donald De Line had never produced and M. Night Shyamalan had never done television. Shyamalan wanted to do something that was not like what was already on television. So why now? Donald De Line said it is because the show has a “fantastic story” and with a good show, it is all about the story. Reed Diamond agreed saying it is a “high quality show” and what better way to tell a great story than with A-list talent who want to bring the story to life.

Asked to sum up the story, De Line said it is a “great suspense thriller where nothing is what it seems to be but everything reveals itself…in a scientific way.” It does have the vibe of Twin Peaks meets The X-Files. On that alone, I am sold plus the pilot was pretty awesome so I will check it out for sure!

Wayward Pines premieres on May 14th on FOX.

Briefly: Daredevil is just around the corner, A.K.A. Jessica Jones is well into production, and today Marvel announced that Cheo Hodari Coker has joined Luke Cage as series’ showrunner, and also that the series will debut in 2016.

Most recently, Coker served as a co-executive producer on the second season of “Ray Donovan,” and prior to that was a supervising producer on the critically-acclaimed, fourth season of the drama “SouthLAnd.” Coker was a part of the “SouthLAnd” team that earned the show a 2012 Peabody Award. Coker also garnered a 2013 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Writing for a Dramatic Series for his work on that show. Coker’s feature film credits include Fox Searchlight’s rap biopic “Notorious.” He authored the book “Unbelievable: The Life, Death, and Afterlife of The Notorious B.I.G.” as well. CW has released a new promo for The Flash. The promo named “My Name Is…”, gave us a closer look of how the Flash’s superspeed will look in action. I’m a big fan of the Arrow series so im really excited for The Flash to premier this fall. I know there is a leaked pilot floating around on the web, but i will wait for the official debut so i can enjoy it along with everyone else.

The Flash will premier on October 7, 2014 on the CW

http://youtu.be/egptEhSWF-U

what do you guys think of the Flash in action?

In the next few months, the much hyped Simpsons and Family Guy crossover will be unleashed on the world. To hold fans over, the crowd at Comic Con was treated to a five minute clip of what we can expect from this animated sitcom mash up. Weren’t at Comic Con? Well, since then, the clip had been all over YouTube for the public’s viewing pleasures. The results? Well… See for yourself!

http://youtu.be/-7YzXMzZ1bU

As expected, there were laughs to be had, but the clip felt a little hit or miss for me, While there were some definite laugh out loud moments, (Ralph in the school bus, the Bob’s Burgers cameo and the jab at The Cleveland Show amongst them), hearing a rape joke in Springfield was just too jarring for me. It may fit Family Guy‘s style of shock humor, but it doesn’t fit with Bart in the scene. Oh, and by the way, is anyone else over the chicken fights? Even with Homer being involved?

Will the special live up to the expectations it’s set through about a year of hype? What did you think of the clip? The special is scheduled for September 28th.

If you’ve been following Geekscape on Twitter and Facebook (and now on Youtube with GeekscapeTV!), then you’ve no doubt watched the sizzle reel for our Geekscape original series ‘Paul London: Hero of the Prophecy’. The idea came from my brother Paul, who thought it would be fun to do something Buck Rogers-ish for one of his wrestling photo shoots. He, Graham Douglas and his former tag partner Brian Kendrick went up to Griffith Park one day and shot some ridiculous promotional photos. When I saw them I thought he had lost his mind. Wrestling fans would never go for this… but geeks just might (I’m pretty sure I was wrong about the wrestling fans, who so far love it, but was right about the geeks!).

That’s Graham on the left… as ‘Finnegan’ for the first time!

I suggested to Paul that he get together with William Bibbiani and write up an idea for a webisode script. What William wrote is still one of the favorite things I’ve ever read… but it was too expensive. There was no way we could shoot it. Part of that was my fault. I told them to just go nuts, but as my producing partner Georg Kallert and I started to meet with people about what was now called ‘Paul London: Hero of the Prophecy’ it became clear that to make this series properly, with great wrestling and semi-passable 80s effects, it was going to take some money. Several doors were closed in our faces. It was a depressing time.

Ultimately, we decided to shoot the sizzle that you now see below on GeekscapeTV. Georg, William, Paul and I wrote something that we could afford from scratch, something that we could present to TV Networks and show them in a modest way what the show could be, especially the 80s nostalgic tone (and of course… the wrestling!). It wasn’t easy, as William had some hilarious ideas and I had trouble figuring out what we could afford to shoot in 3 days. Finally Paul, Georg, Graham, William and some of our friends (Brian Gilmore, Marisha Ray, Yuri Lowenthal, Nick Gregorio, Jason Trost, Kari Lane and Mr. Doug Jones) spent a few days shooting it after the dungeon/castle set was built and we had found a place in sunny Simi Valley that would work for the exteriors. We had to delay one day from the shoot for a few months due to Doug’s Falling Skies schedule but Doug is literally the sweetest man I’ve ever met in Hollywood (and one of the most talented) so it was definitely worth the wait! And of course, seeing him vaporize Gilmore wasn’t something I was going to compromise! I’d been waiting to see Gilmore killed on screen for years!

Mr. Doug Jones... the sweetest man in Hollywood!
Mr. Doug Jones… the sweetest man in Hollywood!

The days were fun and our love for 80s sci fi and fantasy films helped power us through the long hours (and the summer heat). Finally, after a few months of off and on editing, we arrived at the sizzle trailer that you see below. It’s a pitch piece that we can show people in order to tell them what ‘Paul London: Hero of the Prophecy’ could be, a celebration of nostalgia, wrestling and sword & sorcery (which is more popular today with Game of the Thrones and Lord of the Rings as it’s ever been) rolled up into a love letter to my brother Paul, a boy who grew up loving wrestling and achieved his dream of wrestling in the WWE at the age of 22. Now that those years are behind him and he’s off on life’s next adventure, I thought it would be a fun and sincere basis for a big, hilarious space and fantasy opera.

Please, if you enjoyed what you saw here, share ‘Paul London: Hero of the Prophecy’ with your friends, family… and even enemies! We want everyone to see what we’ve created in the hopes of keeping all of our childhood dreams and loves alive. That is why it’s so important to us here at Geekscape! And maybe, just maybe, with enough fan support or if it lands on the right set of eyes, the adventure will continue some more!

Briefly: We haven’t heard too much news from the Marvel / Netflix deal since its announcement back in November (aside from Drew Goddard’s involvement in the Daredevil series). Today however, the city of New York has revealed that each series (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage, if you’ve forgotten) will be filmed in the real-life big apple.

The announcement is set to create over 3000 jobs in the area, with filming set to begin this Summer.

You can take a look at the entire press release below for more info, and be sure to let us know if you’re excited for this authentic NYC experience! We’ll have more info on each series for you as soon as it’s available!

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, The Walt Disney Company, Marvel and Netflix Inc. today announced that Marvel’s landmark live-action television series, which will bring Marvel’s ‘flawed heroes of Hell’s Kitchen’ characters to Netflix, the world’s leading Internet TV network, will principally film in New York State. Produced by Marvel Television, in association with ABC Television Studios, this groundbreaking series is Marvel’s most ambitious foray yet into live-action television storytelling and represents the largest film or television production project commitment in New York State history.

Filming is set to begin in the Summer 2014 and will create at least three thousand jobs in New York State including up to 400 full time jobs. The project will include nearly 60 one-hour episodes focused on the 4 Defenders characters: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.

“New York is where the entertainment industry started, and this unprecedented commitment from Disney and Marvel is further evidence that we’re bringing it back bigger and better than ever before,” said Governor Cuomo. “And when the entertainment industry thrives, it fuels dozens of other industries and businesses. The competition for these projects is fierce and Disney could have chosen to film these shows anywhere, but they knew that shooting in New York means getting to work with the best in world. These shows bring New York’s superheroes home where they belong – along with hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars in new business.”

“Since 2008 Disney has directly contributed almost half a billion dollars to New York’s economy through television and film production, along with approximately 9,000 jobs for New Yorkers,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and CEO, The Walt Disney Company. “The Governor’s policies make this great state a more affordable and attractive location, opening the door for even greater economic investment and job creation for New Yorkers. Our Marvel series for Netflix will inject millions directly into the local economy and create hundreds of new jobs.”

“We thank the Governor and the great state of New York for helping us create the ultimate backdrop to this epic series. Setting our production in New York City truly underscores the authenticity and excitement we plan to bring to The Defenders and their ‘flawed heroes of Hell’s Kitchen’ stories,” said Alan Fine, President, Marvel Entertainment.

Last November, Disney and Netflix announced an unprecedented deal for Marvel TV to bring multiple original series of live-action adventures of four of Marvel’s most popular characters exclusively to the world’s leading Internet TV Network beginning in 2015. This pioneering agreement calls for Marvel to develop four serialized programs totaling 52 one-hour episodes culminating in a four to eight episode mini-series programming event. Led by a series focused on “Daredevil,” followed by “Jessica Jones,” “Iron Fist” and “Luke Cage,” the epic will unfold over multiple years of original programming, taking viewers deep into the gritty world of heroes and villains of Hell’s Kitchen, New York. Netflix has committed to a minimum of four, thirteen episodes series and a mini-series event in which the Marvel characters from the first four series team up as “The Defenders,” much like “The Avengers.”

This new original TV deal follows last year’s landmark movie distribution deal through which, beginning with 2016 theatrically released feature films, Netflix will be the exclusive U.S. subscription television service for first-run, live-action and animated movies from the Walt Disney Studios, including titles from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Disneynature and Lucasfilm.

“The Defenders are classic New York characters; smart, resourceful and tough enough to always stand up for what’s right,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix Chief Content Officer. “We’re delighted they’re coming to life on their home turf thanks to Governor Cuomo and his team.”

When Governor Cuomo took office in 2011, he made the attraction of the film and television production and post-production industries, and jobs and the economic impact they bring with them, a key part of his overall strategy to grow New York State’s economy. Since that time, he has signed into law several important changes to both programs to make New York more competitive in this global marketplace, and the results have been significant. Both programs enjoyed record-breaking years in 2013, bringing billions of dollars in new spending and thousands of jobs into the Empire State. The stability provided by multiyear funding has particularly encouraged the development of television series production work, like the new Marvel series, as well as long term investments in infrastructure, all of which creates thousands of jobs directly and indirectly related to the actual productions themselves.

These are my big geek highlights of 2013!

SDCC 2013 – I love SDCC, and each year is different, but this year was crazy. Getting actual press credentials changes everything, and seeing some of the places and things we got to enjoy was crazy. The best part was seeing the child like wonder in Derek’s eyes, as the little Canuck from a tiny island in Canada was awed by the Geek Mecca. I remember my first SDCC, before I became jaded, and watching Derek experience the same thing was awesome. Oh yeah and getting into a fight with a Twilight fan was cool too.

Equestria Girls Movie – When the My Little Pony rumour mill started dishing out rumors of Hasbro wanting to take our favorite little Ponies, and turn them into Bratz dolls, the community flipped their shit. When a couple of leaks came out of character stills, the community flipped out again. When the trailer came out, they flipped out AGAIN. It appears the MLP fandom likes to flip out a lot, stating every little change to be the end of the world! I tried to stay off the end of the world wagon, but I got caught up in it. So when the movie finally came out and I watched it I was expecting shit. Oh boy was I surprised. It was the same old awesome writing and characters, just bipedal. The music was a blast, and all the songs were charming. I really enjoyed it.

Getting Into Comics Semi Seriously – This was the year I finally decided to become a next level geek. So I made it a goal to start reading comics. Yeah I would get a single issue here or there, or some collectible hard back copy of The Rocketeer books, but I never really got into the serials. So the last few months I have been reading as much as I can get my hands on, mostly review stuff, but I am enjoying every page of it. I have a re-purposed Kindle Fire and a bunch of digital books. I’ve been a huge anti Digital Books guy for years, but finally getting into it I have changed my mind. Being able to have all your books on you at all times is awesome. The My Little Pony comics, and everything from IDW frankly, is amazing to read. I cannot get my hands on enough!

Favorite/Best TV Series of 2013:

1. Breaking Bad—Really, there’s nothing to say that hasn’t been said. Watch, if you haven’t. rewatch, if you have.

2. Game of Thrones—It just keeps getting better and better. Pretty soon they’re going to run out of books, so George, if you’re reading…write faster!

3. Almost Human—a debut show this Fall on Fox, this is one of the 2013 season stand-outs. A fun buddy-comedy set in the near future, the show may not stretch the confines of its genre but it does what it does really well.

4. The Good Wife—After getting a little lost early in 2012, The Good Wife came back, with style, for the final half of the 2012-2013 season, and continues strong this season.

5. Brooklyn Nine-Nine—It started slow and took a few episodes to really click, but Brooklyn Nine-Nine has found its footing as a solid ensemble comedy. And Andre Braugher is flat-out phenomenal as the openly-gay Captain of the unit.

6. The Bridge—An American remake of a Danish/Swedish series, The Bridge follows an American and a Mexican detective as they try to solve a series of murders which cross into both of their jurisdictions along the Texas-Chihuahua border. Dark, somber, and a little slow, the show still manages to compel with its harsh and uncompromising look into crime, corruption and immigration on both sides of the border.

7. Da Vinci’s Demons—A Starz original, this show was fun, interesting, educational and pretty much not watched. Which is a shame, because it’s 5-parts Indiana Jones to 3-parts Bill Nye the Science Guy to 2-parts The Borgias. What could be better? Starz has renewed for a second season and you can catch up on the first via OnDemand.

8. House of Cards—Netflix’s foray into original programming proved that the traditional television paradigm is no longer the only way to make good TV. With Kevin Spacy leading an all-star cast, House of Cards provided wit, drama, some comedy and a scathing look at American politics—all streamed directly to your device of choice.

9. Supernatural—Supernatural has been on the air for nine years, and while it had a few odd moments (we’re looking at you, Season Seven), the 2012-2013 season picked up momentum and brought the boys back to their killing-bad-guys-saving-the-world-angsty-talking roots. And the 2013 season has just kept getting better. Not bad for a show older than the computer I am typing this on.

10. Community—Ok, the 2013 Winter/Spring season of Community was not its best. It was bad. The showrunners lacked the insane-right-until-its-sane genius of the ‘not-really-fired-but-he-doesn’t-work-here-anymore’ show’s creator, Dan Harmon, and the show felt…different. Like Tofu Turkey when you’re expecting a real bird. Sure, the gravy and trimmings were all there but the texture was off. It made this list, though, because Dan Harmon is back (YAY) and we have high, high hopes for the show when it airs in January.

Favorite geek memories / moments of 2013:

1. The thesurvivor2299.com website/hoax. Sure it wasn’t real, but the good-natured hoax provided weeks of entertainment, puzzle decoding and rampant speculation. It also showed Bethesda (in case they weren’t aware) exactly how excited fans were about even the whiff of a possibility of a Fallout 4 announcement.

2. Disney buys Star Wars franchise, announces a writer, then a director, then a release date. I mean, sheesh. Princess Leia is now a Disney Princess. Fandoms collide!

3. Game of Thrones is the most pirated thing-ever—and breaks the internet with the infamous Red Wedding.

4. SimCity requires online play; EA forgets to make sure they have enough servers. But hey, we got a free game as an ‘apology’ gift so…

5. KHAAAAAAN. Whether you liked it, hated it, or were confused by the reference, the Star Trek reboot on a favorite villain was certainly a stand-out moment.

6. BlizzCon Roars: When announcing the new expansion, Warlords of Draenor, to their mammoth MMO, World of Warcraft, the fan reaction at BlizzCon was deafening.

Favourite Comics of 2013 (in no particular order aside from #1):

Batman – Scott Snyder’s Batman is arguably the only book in the New 52 lineup that started out great, and has retained its must-read status for its entire run. This is the book that got me back into Batman after many years of ignoring the character at my LCS, and it’s also the first book that I read when I get back from picking up my weekly haul. From the Court of Owls, to Death of the Family, to Year Zero and beyond, Batman is currently DC’s best book by far. You won’t regret reading it if you haven’t already!

The Wake – You can’t go wrong with a Scott Snyder title (probably why two of them are on this list), and The Wake is no exception. The horror/sci-fi/creature feature created by Snyder and Sean Murphy is just halfway through its ten issue run, and it’s already exponentially more memorable than almost any horror film that I’ve seen this year (aside from The Conjuring). The Wake is a tale that will leave you guessing after every issue, page, and panel, and it should not be passed up by any comic reader, regardless of what you typically read.

Trillium – I’m also a sucker for Jeff Lemire (though I still need to read Sweet Tooth… yeah I know), and his epic, time-bending love story (between a World War I veteran and a botanist from the year 3797) is some of the absolute best sci-fi work in recent memory. It’s hard to talk about Trillium without spoiling it in some way, but I was hooked from the opening of its double-sided flipbook of a first issue. Like The Wake, Trillium will span just ten issues, but you’ll be hard pressed to find a better miniseries this year.

The Superior Spider-Man – I was as skeptical as anyone when Marvel announced that they were killing Peter Parker (again). Sure, BKV has done an incredible job with Miles Morales in the Ultimate Universe, but how could we live in a world without any Peter Parker, and especially a world where the evil-as-hell Doc Ock was in his body? As it turns out, Dan Slott putting Ock in Pete’s body has been some pretty damned fresh Spidey. There have been plenty of memorable moments during the series run so far (Ock finding morals, battling with his old pals, fighting with Peter’s mind, etc), and I’m sure that there’ll be plenty more before it’s finished. I’m not sure that I want Superior to go on forever (we do need Peter back one day, and issue #30 is rumoured to be the last), but for now it’s definitely my go-to Spidey book.

#1. Saga – Brian K. Vaughan’s previous book, Y: The Last Man, remains my favourite comic book series ever, but if Saga continues its incessant quality, direction, plot, and style, Y could become number two before long. Every single comic reader on this planet has been telling you to read Saga for over a year now, so freaking do it, because it is bar none the best series currently on the market. Seriously.

Favourite/Best TV Series of 2013:

1. Breaking Bad – What SJ said. It’s easily the best television series of 2013, and definitely among the best shows of all time. If you haven’t seen this yet, what the hell is wrong with you?

2. Suits – The antics of Mike Ross and Harvey Specter make for some of the best, funniest, and most touching moments on television. Mike Ross knows the law, but never went to law school, so simple things like filing for copyright and noting a subpoena elude him (at least in season one). The actors have great chemistry, the plot is gripping and exciting, and the writing is quirky and hilarious. Suits is definitely my most anticipated returning show in 2014 (except for maybe Community)

3. Bates Motel – Another series that I can’t wait to come back on air. Bates Motel began with Norma and Norman Bates moving into that fateful motel, and ended with plenty of murder, deceit and mystery. Norman’s going a little crazy, and I’d infinitely excited to see where Carlton Cuse and Co. take us next.

4. The Walking Dead – This year’s Scott Gimple led season of The Walking Dead has been the series best year yet. I’ve loved every episode so far, which is something that cannot be said for any other season. My only problem: had season three ended like we all wanted it to (pretty much verbatim to this year’s midseason finale), nothing that has happen thus far in season four would ever have needed to happen. It’s all a little redundant now, isn’t it? In any case, this is the best that the show has ever been, and I can’t wait for its return in February (it’s still not as good as the game though).

5. American Horror Story: Coven – I’ve thoroughly enjoyed each season of American Horror Story (even Asylum when it got weird… though it almost lost me), but Coven is easily the best year yet. The story of Fiona, Cordelia, and the coven of Miss Robichaux’s Academy is gripping, gross, weird, and hilarious, all at the same time. If you haven’t started American Horror Story yet, it’s safe to start with Coven (as the seasons are not connected plot or setting-wise), but you’ll definitely want to go back and watch both Asylum and Murder House as well.

Gus

Favourite Moment: That’s an easy one. This year I had the pleasure of attending my first San Diego Comic Con. There, I incredibly got to meet the real life Jonathan London AND much of the Geekscape crew. Then I had the time of my freaking life.

I can’t wait to do it all again now that I know (a little bit) of what to expect! SDCC 2014 is going to ROCK!
