The idea of a long running RPG series turning into a fighting game isn’t all that unheard of nowadays, but it was still surprising to see the Persona titles get the brawler treatment. Still, with a continuation of two beloved RPGs combined with the fighting game mastery from the developers at Arc System Works, the original Persona 4 Arena ended up being one of my favorite fighting games. When a sequel was announced that promised to fill the roster with even more of our favorite party members, I couldn’t wait to get the chance to try them, which is why I played a few rounds at E3 to get the skinny on all the new combatants.

Yukari

A fan favorite from Persona 3, Yukari has traded in her school uniform for a power ranger-esque getup, showing off her newfound profession as an actress since her game finished. Using wind attacks to draw opponents towards her spells while firing off her bow and arrow at lightning speed, her specialty is clearly the ability to control the field while keeping her opponents away. Even as someone who’s played fighting games for more than two decades, the quickness of her shots caught me off guard, proving that she’ll be a powerful foe once the game releases.

Junpei

The bro of Persona 3. Junpei uses one of the most creative fighting styles I’ve ever seen, integrating his baseball background into his moveset with an “at bat” status that powers him up if he successfully hits opponents with his bat. Hitting moves runners up a base, while missing counts as a strike. Connecting with a super move counts as a home run, earning a run for your hit, plus everyone on base at the time. Missing too many times will eventually result in earning three outs though, which will remove everyone on your bases, so you’ll have to make each hit count. When Junpei scores 10 runs though, he goes into rally mode, significantly increasing his speed and power until he hits three outs. It’s ridiculous to explain and even stranger in action, but it definitely affected the way I approached his fights.

Ken and Koromaru

For those who have played BlazBlue, Ken and Koromaru are essentially like Carl and Ada, except Koromaru doesn’t move around like a sloth covered in honey. For those unfamiliar, this two in one character essentially plays like you’re controlling two people at once, with the buttons usually reserved for Persona attacks being mostly dedicated to Koromaru’s attacks.

The two allies fight in tandem, with Ken using his retractable spear to strike from a distance or pull enemies in while Koromaru hits hard from up close. Unlike most characters who fight in tandem with their Persona, but temporarily lose them if they’re struck a certain amount of times, Koromaru has his own small health bar. When it’s depleted, the pooch is taken out of the fight temporarily, forcing Ken to lose most of his combos and moves in the process. That’s not to say they don’t have a Persona at their disposal for additional attacks, but I found it to come into play far less than it does for the rest of the cast.

Rise

Rise is one of the most popular idols in the Persona version of Japan, and became a powerful supporting ally for Yu Narukami and the rest of the cast of P4. After somewhat playing a damsel in distress role in the first Arena game, she’s since upgraded her combat abilities to fight side by side with her friends for the first time.

Using her singing, dancing, microphone stand and her Persona, Himiko at her side, Rise ends up being a powerful addition to the cast. Relying mostly on traps and projectiles, she’s still dangerous up close thanks to her decent range, though it’s not suggested since her damage output seemed pretty low. Still, if played right, your opponents should have a hard time approaching her especially since her song abilities can cast a variety of status effects on her foe. All in all, it might take some time to learn the ins and outs of her play style, but she’s sure to become a favorite when mastered.

Sho

The new kid in town, Sho is an original character added to the Ultimax cast, who’s past and motivations are a complete mystery. What doesn’t take long to figure out however, is that he’s a vicious fighter who can do big damage in no time if his opponent is carelss. As the only character with no Persona, this gives him many more attack options for his aggressive rush down style, throwing out mix ups and combos with ease. Thanks to his dual swords, Sho hits hard, fast and is one of the most straightforward characters while still standing out as the only non-Persona user. His alternate shadow form however, introduces a Persona for him to use, making him even more deadly. By the looks of it, Sho has the tools to become a popular fighter real fast.

On that subject, almost every character has an alternate form thanks to the return of their shadows. The primary difference between the shadow and standard versions is that the shadows have more HP, do more damage and build up their super meter faster by landing hits, making them much more offense oriented. In exchange, they lose their awakening, burst and other defensive options, making them more ideal for someone who likes to bring pain instead of receive it. But with these lost abilities comes a new one, because the Shadow Rampage ability gives them unlimited meter for a limited amount of time, allowing them to do whatever they damn well please. Some of them, (like Shadow Teddy), even have new moves, like his ability to summon the giant, creepy Shadow Teddy from the main game.

Exciting? I think so. Arc System Works seems to be doing a great job of creating a unique, varied cast that even breathes new life into the characters from the first game. Last year, a revival of the classic fighter, Killer Instinct, was finally announced for the Xbox One, but the joy the announcement brought was short lived. With a free to play structure and a developer that wasn’t Rare, fans were worried that the third game that they had been waiting more than 10 years for wouldn’t be the title they were hoping for. About seven months have passed since the game initially launched, slowly releasing characters that could be purchased individually if the player chose to add them to the roster, the game has enough support to start a second season.

Revealed during Microsoft’s E3 press conference, Killer Instinct: Season 2 is off to a great start, adding original poster boy TJ Combo into the latest version of the fighter. In addition to promising Cinder as one of the returning fighters, Combo is living up to his namesake in the reveal trailer that can be viewed before. Watching him go to town on Fulgore definitely brings back memories, but will it be enough to keep people interested in the game?

While I’m excited to see more characters from the original be brought back, I’m wondering why staple characters such as these two weren’t in the game sooner. Plus, if the characters are going to cost the same amount as the ones in the past have, the title can end up going from budget title to costing far more than a typical retail game would cost. On top of having to pay for live to play it online and a thin single player component that didn’t last long, and this game is feeling more and more like a hard sell to me. With that said, nostalgia is making me eager to get a chance with these old favorites.

With Ultra Street Fighter IV’s announcement last summer, along with it came the promise of five new fighters that are ready to jump into the ring. Four of those five included Street Fighter X Tekken alumni Poison, Hugo, Elena and Rolento with the fifth being shrouded in mystery. Some thought it would be Azura, the star of Capcom’s Azura’s Wrath. Not a bad guess considering his game had DLC pitting him against Ryu and Akuma in a Street Fighter type fight. A good guess doesn’t equal a right one however, since Capcom put the speculation to rest with the announcement of Decapre as the final addition to the already large roster.

Who is Decapre and why should you care? As one of M. Bison’s “dolls” from Street Fighter Alpha 3, she was in the background of one of the game’s victory poses. Like Cammy before she escaped, her role is to serve as one of the evil dictator’s hand picked fighters who’s ultimate goal is to serve as an extra body for him to inhabit. Why he wants to place his soul in the bodies of genetically modified girls is anyone’s guess, but hey! I won’t judge.

Watching her in action, Decapre looks A LOT like Cammy. In fact, variations of her Cannon Strike and Cannon Spike moves can be seen in her reveal trailer below, along with Bison’s own Psycho Crusher. Overall, she looks like an interesting blend of playstyles, but I would have preferred someone more original, especially since the other four were essentially ripped from Street Fighter X Tekken aside from a few differences. Of course, we won’t be able to tell for sure until the game releases in June of this year as a DLC add on to Arcade Edition for $14.99. If you don’t own it, a standalone game with all previous DLC included will launch in August for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 for $39.99.

Being a gamer in the 90’s meant that you were subjected to a slew of terrible licensed video games. Hell, the game didn’t even have to be based off of a TV show or movie; it could just be based on a person. One of the most infamous examples of the latter was Shaq Fu, a fighting game of questionable quality that sent basketball player Shaquille O’Neil to another world to save a civilization from its tyrannical ruler. I mean, who comes up with this stuff, right? Apparently, someone thinks it’s a good idea to crowd fund a sequel after almost 20 years, and dare I say… It actually looks promising?

Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn is being made by a group of developers who want to right the wrongs of the first game by making a sequel that would be good without the celebrity license. By turning it into a beat em up rather than a one on one fighting game, it definitely looks more campy than the original, which is the only way a game like this can succeed in my opinion. It has to be a little self aware if it’s trying to sell this premise. But the game won’t come out without the backing of the fans, with some of the stretch goals consisting of copies of the game, DLC for life, launch parties and even a social media follow from Saq or trip to TNT Studios for those with really deep pockets.

Take the challenge up to an entirely new level in unforgettable smack downs against awesome bosses.
Once you beat a boss you unlock him and can play as him in the game.
Fight through the slums of Asian cities, on the rooftops of skyscrapers. Battle it out inside buildings, seedy night clubs, and cause mayhem in the markets.
Smash an enemy through the floor and leap down to a lower level.  Barge through walls and forge your own path.  Smash furniture, toss enemies through windows, even collapse structures – when you are the Shaqbreaker everything is possible

A wide variety of melee and projectile weapons as well as various everyday objects that can be used as weapons – katanas, shurikens, baseball bats, the occasional basketball filled with the wrong type of gas, bottles, knives and dozens more.

Don’t see a weapon you like?  What about that manhole cover or that car door?  You are Shaq after all, so maybe you want to hurl that motorcycle on a bunch of enemies at once.  The world is your projectile.

Wipe out huge numbers of enemies at once.  Bowl down enemies with balls of steel, create earthquakes of unprecedented power, slam dunk baddies with ease.

Co-op’s not your bag?  Build up your character and fighting style and duke it out online or on the same machine against another player.
Once you have played through the main game revisit it to discover secret environments that you might have missed.
Think its over once the Black Star Ninja, is unmasked?  Think again.

Hosts of challenges await that pit you against the best Shaq Fu’s in the world.

On top of that, 5% of the proceeds from the game go to the Boys and Girls club, so even if it sucks, at least the money you wasted goes to a good cause!

Remember last fall when we were waiting on baited breath for Atlus’ mysterious Persona announcement? The end result was the official reveal of the long awaited Persona 5 along with a slew of spinoffs. The problem? These were only officially announced for Japan. Thankfully, Atlus hasn’t left us waiting for too long, because every one of these games are headed stateside! Yes, even the dancing one.

Starting with Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth, this dungeon crawling RPG will unite the SEES from Persona 3 and the Investigation Team from Persona 4 in a chibi-fied 3DS exclusive in the style of Etrian Odyssey. Coming in the fall, Persona Q marks the first time the Persona series is coming to a Nintendo platform.

From the press release:

“Trapped in an other-world filled with Shadows, the protagonists from Persona 3 and Persona 4 each have different events to follow, allowing the player to choose and experience two different plotlines. As both groups seek a way out of the labyrinth, they will run in to two new characters, Rei and Zen, who may hold the secret to this new mystery,”

Next is the return of a favorite of fighting game fans like myself. Dropping the ridiculously awesome subtitle of Ultra Suplex Hold, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax returns to the P-1 Grand Prix with new fighters and moves. Bringing in Persona 3 favorites, Yukari and Junpei, as well as a brand new character in Sho Minazuki, it’ll be time to dust off the arcade sticks once Fall comes around.

As its predecessor, Ultimax will be released for the PS3 and Xbox 360. If our review of the original game is any indication, there’s plenty of reason for RPG and Fighting fans alike to get excited for the sequel.

On the Vita front, Persona will be returning to the platform following the excellent Persona 4 Golden, but not in the way you might expect. Persona 4: Dancing All Night brings the usually dark, morbid world of the series to the dance floor. Staring in game pop idol, Rise Kujikawa, this rhythm game comes from the good folks over at Dingo Inc, the developers of the Hatsune Miku series of titles.

What drives Rise and her friends to dance the night away? According to Atlus,

“After hearing rumors about the Midnight Stage, she checks a certain website at midnight and sees a mysterious movie clip and, you guessed it, winds up on the “other side.” Worse yet, she finds out her junior idol peers from the group Kanamin Kitchen are missing as well. She has no choice but to send an SOS to the Investigation Team to help rescue the missing idols.”

Hey, whatever gives us an excuse to put Yu Narukami’s massive amounts of swag on display, right? Dancing All Night will hit the Vita in 2015, so that will give us plenty of time to get in touch with our inner idol.

And of course, the main course. After years of waiting, Persona 5 is officially slated for a 2015 release on the PS3. A new English version of the original trailer was posted as well, but it still lands firmly in teaser territory. No, we have yet to see any solid details on what the game will be about, but we have five chairs! And at least we know we won’t have to wait too long.

Let’s face it, we’ve been overdue for a big Super Smash Bros. announcement. It looks like Nintendo agreed, because they decided to end the year with the reveal of one of the most requested stars from the Mario universe. After much anticipation, Rosalina of Super Mario Galaxy fame is finally confirmed to be joining the fight.

After faking us out with Kirby racing on Rainbow Road against the Mario Kart participants, (which would be AWESOME if it were real. Get on it, Nintendo!) it was time for the galaxy queen to make her debut with her trusty Luma at her side. After summoning it, she seems to control similar to the Ice Climbers, where both characters can fight independently. Unlike the former however, it seems like Rosalina and Luma can seperate and fight at different positions rather than be tied to each other. Outside of this two on one assault, she can also manipulate gravity, which is shown when she pulls items towards her and creates a barrier that pushes incoming items away.

All in all, it looks like Rosalina will bring plenty of new ideas to the table. If nothing else, this reveal and her role in Super Mario 3D World show that she’s here to stay as one of the premier characters of the Mario roster. Super Smash Bros for Wii U/3DS is scheduled for 2014.

This morning, the folks over at smashbros.com treated us with the unexpected reveal of Marth, the main protagonist of the original Fire Emblem game in Japan. The blue haired, sword wielding pretty boy is the newest veteran to officially make his return, which caught some like myself off guard since most of the reveals have coincided with either a game’s release, or big news associated with the character, (like the Sonic: Lost World launch.)

After over a month without a significant new reveal, I have to say that Marth is making a welcomed return. Considering that the prince and his series as a whole came to achieve international attention specifically because of his Smash Bros. Melee appearance, it would feel weird at this point to release the game without him in it. Part of me was expecting him to get replaced by his Fire Emblem: Awakening counterpart, but with him now official, we’ll have to wait a little bit longer to see if the smash 3DS hit will get any representation outside of a stage. Either way, his immense attractiveness combined with the difficult task of figuring out his gender will surely continue to excite and confuse all who cross his path.

Persona 4 Arena was one of those games that we never knew we wanted, but were happy it exists. After reviewing it last year, I learned that this odd pairing between the RPG developer Atlus and the fighting game aficionados at Arc System Works, (responsible for the Guilty Gear and BlazBlue franchises,) resulted in one of the most enjoyable 2D fighters in years, so much so that I consider it my favorite console game of 2012. Its fast paced action, unique fighting mechanics involving both the characters and their unique Persona’s and deep story that served as a sequel to both the third and fourth RPG titles, and there was little to complain about once our arcade sticks were in hand.

So its no surprise that P4:A would get a follow up. As a matter of fact, I was expecting them to go the popular route and nickel and dime us with expensive DLC characters before coming out with some kind of director’s cut. Imagine my surprise when Atlus officially announced Persona 4: The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold. Yes, that’s the real name. Yes it’s absurd. Yes, the game looks awesome!

Persona 4 Ultamax Yukari

Joining the existing roster of characters spanning the casts of Persona 3 and 4 are fan favorites from 3. Yukari arrives sporting some Pink Ranger-esque outfit and comes equipped with her trademark bow and uses her Persona’s wind abilities to redirect her projectiles at her enemies. Junpei has dedicated his time to baseball since giving up fighting shadows, which is reflected by his strength growing for every “run” scored when he hits his opponents with his bat. Joining them is newcomer Sho Minazuki. Nothing is known about this fighter, but it’s safe to say he’ll play a decent role as the story unfolds.

Aside from the new characters, every existing fighter will come with rebalanced skills and new attacks, in addition to new Shadow Forms. Each character aside from Elizabeth and Shadow Labrys, (you know, since she’s already a shadow,) has a shadow version, which will give up certain abilities like Bursts and One More Cancels for a quick charging SP meter that can become unlimited for a short amount of time. How players will approach each of these scenarios adds an extra layer of depth to an already deep fighting game, and to say this news is exciting enough. Seeing as the backgrounds, themes and stages in the trailer look much darker, even implying that shadows are roaming in the real world, gives it a Persona 3 vibe. Does this mean the Dark Hour is returning?

We’ll have to wait until the end of this year to find out. P4:U is scheduled to arrive in Japanese arcades this Winter with a console release surely around the corner. Between the Smash Bros. Miiverse page and the official website, the developers have promised a screenshot every day leading up to the 2014 release of the game. Unless a new character is announced, it’s rare that the shot is anything worth mentioning, but every once in awhile, a new bread crumb will drop that will keep us salivating for more juicy tidbits.

Yesterday was one such day, with a teaser for a potential Pilotwings stage. No, we’re not talking Wuhu Island from Pilotwings Resort, or even the islands from the N64 launch title, Pilotwings 64. It looks like they’re going way back with a stage based on the original game for the SNES. You remember, the game that started as a flight sim and ended up as a rescue mission in a sudden twist that would make M. Night Shyamalan proud? They don’t make them like they used to.

This possible stage reveal was a pleasant surprise. What else will Smash Bros. have in store for us? Stay tuned to Geekscape and you’ll find out as soon as we do.

Today’s Nintendo Direct has made it official: Luigi will be making his big return to the fighting ring in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game for Wii U and 3DS. Joining Captain Olimar as the newest veteran to be confirmed, the green clad plumber is sure to bring his unique brand of offense with him. While I’m sure this comes as a surprise to no one, it’s worth mentioning that his move set from the screenshots so far look identical to Melee and Brawl, which is fine with me as long as his weird Final Smash is changed to something relevant like his Poltergust.

But this wasn’t all for everyone’s favorite player 2, because it was mentioned that good ol’ Weegee will also be available from the start as a default roster member. All of the previous games made him a hidden fighter, so after getting his own year, it’s clear to see that the little brother is still coming up in 2014.

Yesterday’s Smash Bros reveal trailer had the internet exploding with excitement with the reveals of Mega Man and Villager. If you were online at all yesterday, it was impossible to escape the news. But what if I were to tell you that there was one more character that Nintendo neglected to introduce? A character from one of the highest selling franchises in the company’s history? One that is at the peak of human conditioning, which is needed to go toe to toe with Nintendo’s best?

Then what if I were to tell you it’s the Wii Fit Trainer?

Yes, the personal trainer who would sleepily walk players through weight training and yoga poses is heading to the fight, appropriately using exercise inspired moves to attack. From arm-leg extensions to push-ups… hoola hoops to downward dogs. My anticipation for the character went from “WTF” to “OMG” within the short, minute long reveal. I just wish her Final Smash used the Balance Board in some way, but at least he’s apparently in the background of a Wii Fit themed stage!

If nothing else, her reveal trailer is one of the most hilarious things I’ve ever seen. Watching Kirby, Link and Mario trying to do a tree pose had me rolling! Check her out below and let us know if you think she’s an appropriate addition to the anticipated cast!

A few months back, Team Ninja teased Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate as well as the reveal of Ninja Gaiden DS heroine Momiji’s first fighting game appearance. With E3 approaching, the developer detailed its plans for the upcoming ultimate edition of last year’s fighter, and surprisingly, it’s going free to play.

The base version will have four characters, Kasumi, Ayane, Ryu Hayabusa and Hayate. If ninjas aren’t your thing, the entire roster, plus Momiji will be available at $4 a piece. Yes, that includes the Virtua Fighter guest characters. Story mode will cost an additional $15, but versus and online modes will be included in the free model. However, online won’t be compatible against players using the standard game or the Vita version, so get ready to re-download if you want to follow the community to the new game.

Now to put on my tin foil hat for a second, this is what I was afraid of, both with the trend of DLC and the state of Team Ninja after former head Tomonobu Itagaki left. Fighting game fans have joked for years since Capcom popularized the trend of locking finished characters that games would eventually start charging you for individual characters. Not to be outdone, Team Ninja is creating an updated year old game that will cost more than the original at release if you want a full roster. It won’t be compatible with older versions even though the differences shown so far are minimal, and in my opinion, Team Ninja is losing credibility fast.

Itagaki used to have very public spats with Tecmo over the decisions his team made when the publisher wanted him to change his vision, so it’s no wonder that after he left, the developer has had some big disappointments, (Ninja Gaiden 3 comes to mind.) That trend is continuing with this new pay model, and even though my main character is one of the four free ones, it’s hard to support a game that will have had three versions in less than a year, the last of which is desperately trying to cash grab. Dead or Alive has been my favorite 3D fighter ever since I first played it on the Dreamcast, and I’ve never thought twice about supporting the series. For me however, this is too much to take.

But I’ll leave it to you, Geekscape readers. Am I making too big of a deal out of this? At least it’s free and you won’t have to pay for characters you’ll never use. Amongst the fighting game behemoths like Street Fighter and Marvel vs. Capcom, Guilty Gear became a fan favorite by combining the stylish, over the top fighting and characters with a classic, more grounded 2D mechanic. Over the years, the GG series has quietly rode off into the sunset when developer Arc System Works moved onto its sister series BlazBlue and the RPG spinoff, Persona 4 Arena.

That is, until now.

Last seen since it pretended to be Dynasty Warriors, Guilty Gear is finally getting a third fighting game, (or Xrd if numbers are too cool for you,) with -Sign-. Using new 3D models that look pretty damn 2D, series leads Sol Badguy and Ky Kiske renewing their rivalry while showing off the game’s new mechanics while Ky tries his best to top Bridget in the trap department.

Try not to lose it while you watch the reveal trailer. Check back during E3 for more information, since this game has shot up to one of the top games I’m looking forward to at the show.

GameSpot has revealed the latest addition to NetherRealm Studios highly anticipated fighting game Injustice: Gods Among Us. None other than Slade Wilson aka Deathstroke will be joining the roster that already incluides Superman, Batman, Joker, Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, Solomon Grundy, Nightwing, Cyborg, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Catwoman and The Flash.

So, if you haven’t guessed by my bad pun who the latest addition is or by the picture above…it’s Catwoman. Check out the reveal trailer where she lets her claws out below!

I was lucky enough to get seated at a behind-closed-doors preview of DC’s newest fighting game. Fans of DC games may remember their last attempt to make a serious impression on the fighting genre. Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe was, to say the least, not as good as it could have been. But that’s besides the point. Injustice: Gods Among Us will be unique enough to keep on your radar.

NeatherRealm’s newest fighting game will feature a 24-character roster. Officially announced characters include Harley Quinn, Solomon Grundy, Batman, Superman, Flash, and Wonder Woman. The rest of the 20 character slots were silhouetted with question marks.

NeatherRealm was kind enough to show us two matches. The first was between Superman and Flash in the Batcave. NeatherRealm is focused on crafting a unique experience in this specific title. One of their major focuses lies within the map design. Developers are keen on making the world a weapon at your disposal during a match. Examples included Superman grabbing debris from the Batcave, picking grenades up that had fallen out of a Batsuit, and throwing a barrel of oil used to fill the Batmobile; all to inflict damage on Flash.

More examples of using the map as a weapon came in a match between Batman and Solomon Grundy in the stage, “Future City”. Solomon Grundy was able to interact with a parked car by picking it up and smashing Batman with it. This caused the car to become flammable and a potential explosive, thus creating a hazard to both players. During the match, both players must keep fighting while thinking about how they can use that hazard to their advantage.

With each map, NeatherRealm promises to deliver 3 separate environments, each with its own set of object interactions and hazards that can potentially help you win the match. Maps are also destructible, something NeatherRealm wants gamers to notice. Each map and player model will have an intense amount of detail and shades of lighting. The attention to detail was apparent as I was watching Superman and Flash duke it out. During the fight, we were able to see Superman have different facial expressions as he was fighting. Depending on the use of their superpowers, the Batcave would shake and cause damage both in the fighting area and background.

The last thing that gamers should be aware of are the supers. Once a meter is filled, gamers will have the opportunity to perform a super attack. These super attacks have a strong cinematic feel to them. Perhaps the most outstanding super attack came from the Flash. After stunning Superman, Flash took off in one direction as the game cut to a shot of Earth. Flash and his trail could be seen, from space, running AROUND the globe to then deliver a punch to Superman’s face. Each character will have a distinct super, look, and feel.

NeatherRealm is aiming for a cinematic “blockbuster movie” type of fighting experience. I believe they’re right on target.

Crossovers are all the rage lately, especially with fighting games. So it’s no surprise that Team Ninja wants to get in on the action. At GDC, the newest trailer for Dead or Alive 5 showed footage of a gi wearing, headband donning karate man taking on flagship character Kasumi. No, not Ryu… that OTHER guy who looks just like him. Virtua Fighter 5’s Akira will make a special appearance in the upcoming fighter.

And they couldn’t have chosen a worse character.

Don’t get me wrong. I love DOA and I’m also a fan of Virtua Fighter. And because of that, I have no idea how Akira will fit in with fans of either series. First, you have the DOA fans who expect fast pace, simplistic fighting with counters keeping button mashers in check. Virtua Fighter on the other hand, is notoriously technical, forcing players to work for their combos with elaborate inputs and set ups.

In a game full of characters that are difficult to master, Akira is probably the most complicated of all. So how will he faithfully transfer into the world of Dead or Alive? Either he’ll handle completely differently, (which is highly unlikely,) or he’ll be altered severely to fit this game’s mechanics, (bingo, that’s where my money is.) So either you’ll frustrate DOA fans with a much harder character to use or you’ll annoy VF fans who hate to see Akira stripped down so much, (which is rare that you don’t want a character stripped down in DOA.)

Or… fighting gamers won’t care either way and will just have fun with this new character. While I don’t think the two franchises meld together well, as long as he’s fun to play, I don’t care. Check out his review trailer and let us know what you think!

Street Fighter X Tekken is only a few days away and fighting game fans across the country are frothing at the mouth for the chance to play this new crossover. As we get our arcade sticks ready in anticipation, there are several new features and mechanics that haven’t been used in this type of fighter before. It’s never good to go into a fight unprepared, but we’ve got you covered. With these tips, you’ll be sure to have a leg up on the competition , or at least you’ll improve your chances of not getting beaten into a bloody heap.

Think Street Fighter IV meets Tekken Tag Tournament:

Seeing as this is the first of two crossovers featuring the two franchises, Capcom has taken the driver’s seat at the first round. It makes sense that this version would take after their most popular fighter at the moment and use similar graphics and mechanics. Some SFIV combos work when using characters from that fighter with plenty of differences to make them somewhat fresh while using the traditional six button layout. Whereas every character on the roster has enhanced “EX” versions of their special attacks after using a third of your super meter. The only real difference is that super moves are done with one quarter circle and three punches like Marvel vs Capcom rather than the Street Fighter style of double quarter circles with one punch or kick.

But if this was exactly like SFIV, there would be no reason to buy it, (unless you REALLY want Tekken characters to use,) so naturally, Tekken’s mechanics come into play as well. Combos that juggle opponents are essential to victory, and the wall bounce animation from Tatsunoko vs Capcom and MVC3 returns to help chain moves together. Before you get too cocky, you’ll always want to make sure to watch your health, because like Tekken Tag, the round is over when your first fighter is KO’d. There’s no shame in switching!

The Tekken Characters Actually Work!

When the game was announced, I had my doubts on how well the Tekken characters would be adapted to the 2D world of Street Fighter. After playing the game, I’m happy to say that not only do they work, but they’re some of the most enjoyable characters on the roster. Sure, they took some liberties with how they play, (some characters like Jin have been given projectiles while all characters can jump ten feet in the air like the SF guys,) but for the most part, all of them keep their signature moves and combos while fitting in a 2D environment. So when you see a guy tearing it up with Julia and Kazuya, make sure you say hi to me.

The Art of Tagging Out

Tagging out in a 2 on 2 game is going to be important no matter how you look at it, so it’s fortunate that the game has numerous ways to do it. If you want to be a bore about it, pressing the mid punch and kick buttons uses a standard tag, but leaves your incoming character vulnerable. To make things way more interesting, by linking a combo with a double tap of the fierce or roundhouse buttons, the last hit will trigger a launcher tag, which will knock the opponent in the air and automatically switch to your partner so they can continue the juggle. Just make sure not to miss the launcher unless you want your fighter to stand there for a good second, (an eternity in a fighting game.)

If you want to deal the most damage while being a bit of a show off, the strongest way of utilizing your partner is through the double team supers or the cross rush technique that gives you control of both characters at once. With a quick quarter circle with the two middle attack buttons, the double team super, called cross arts, links together each of your fighter’s super moves for a huge amount of damage. If your opponent manages to survive, your second fighter will take over to finish the job. A backwards quarter circle with the two mid attack buttons activates cross rush, which lets you create combos that are otherwise impossible by having both of your fighters on screen at once for an all out assault. Be careful with this technique however, because both characters will be vulnerable to attack.

To give an aspect of customization to each team, players can equip up to three gems that give your team an attribute boost. Each one has various effects, such as boosting your power, increasing your defense or building your super meter. Some are automatically active where as others aren’t usable until certain conditions are met, like landing three punches for example. Some of these have drawbacks, such as the super meter boosting gem that reduces the amount of damage that your fighter deals in exchange for the increase. Keep in mind that buying the limited edition and preordering through certain retailers will nab you exclusive gems. I can’t say I’m happy about certain players having a statistical boost above those who buy the regular game or don’t preorder, so I can only hope that gems can be disabled in versus modes.

Opening Pandora’s Box

Just to get it out of the way, I can’t stand these new mechanics that help players come back from behind. To me, you should be able to win on your own and not need a crutch when you’re simply not the better fighter. With that said, if I had to choose one that I can tolerate the most, Pandora would be it. Unlike OTHER Vs. games, Pandora can only be activated when you have less than 25% health, but it sacrifices your active fighter. The character that remains receives infinite meter, a boost in power and a speed increase, but there’s a huge drawback. The Pandora user has a small amount of time to win, but if they don’t end it soon, they automatically lose. I was in a match where Hugo got me in his grapple attack for the win, but his Pandora meter ran out right before he landed the attack. Hugo collapsed and both characters were on the ground, but I was awarded the win. So if you’re going to activate it, be ready to go all out!

It’s All or Nothing!

So that about scratches the surface with Street Fighter X Tekken. If you were bored interested enough to read these tips, you’ll have more of a fighting chance. By building on the solid SFIV engine, throwing in the aspects of Tekken and creating options new to this version, fighting game players will have their hands full.
