Showcasing cutting edge Japanese fashion has always been a popular aspect of the J-POP Summit. 2013’s theme of “Making Kawaii Universal” resonated with thousands of attendees that savored leading brands as well as live shows featuring top models from the bustling Harajuku fashion scene including Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. Next year’s programming will present even more brands and icons to highlight a wide selection of exclusive designs, apparel, and accessories only available for a limited time during the Festival.

I met these awesome ladies (Kit and Silver) back in March of this year via a Wee Bee Geeks interview and was able to see their pilot at Comikaze (in early November). Here is my interview with Kit about this super cool indie webseries!

        sweethearts9

What is Sweethearts of the Galaxy?

Sweethearts of the Galaxy is a 9 episode web series about a cosplayer (Katelyn) who hits her head and then thinks she’s actually a superhero (Trinity Infinity). It becomes her friend’s job to not let the crazy know she’s crazy by coming up with comic book inspired scenarios to help her through her daily life.

You had a successful kickstarter campaign; congrats! Why did you use kickstarter and what do you think helped you make your goal?

We decided to go with kickstarter mainly for the recognizably factor and to hopefully reach a greater audience of people who enjoy independent film. We liked that people knew about Kickstarter already so we figured they’d feel safer giving us money through that service. Simultaneously we knew there’s a large following of people who enjoy surfing Kickstarter and finding interesting projects to support. We hoped to tap into that group as well and try to build a fan base that isn’t only from the world of conventions and ‘Kit ‘n Silver’. I think the main factors that contributed to our success were the good distribution of prizes, the very kind press we got online, and our families. I did a ton of research before we launched learning what prizes were most popular, what dollar amounts people most often gave, and what we could reasonably expect to raise based on similar projects. Then it was all about getting the word out, which we had a lot of help from a ton of websites. Of course in the end it was our families and friends that came through the strongest. The people we personally reached out to, wrote a letter, sent a message, talked to, those were the people that donated the most.

sweethearts6

Where are you currently with this project?

The project is fully shot and in post. I believe we’re at least 90% in picture lock, and we’re just putting in the music to finish up the season! We have the first episode good to go with 2 & 3 very close to being done, if they aren’t already. Then we’ll have a short holiday break and we’ll be back in the new year with the remainder of the season! Which of course can hopefully launch us into a new Kickstarter for season 2!

How do you think your screening at Comikaze went?

Comikaze went amazingly! It was the first time I had seen the finished first episode and I was in tears from laughing. I knew the show was good but I had no idea how awesome it could be with all of the added effects and music!

sweethearts1

How was having a panel, a booth and a screening Comikaze?

It was awesome having that much going on…if not exhausting. We had such a great response from everyone it left little to no time to just sit and breath. Which, hey, is the way we like it! The booth had a constant stream of friends and new faces coming by that we got to introduce our show to, and that was the goal of the booth! The screening/panel turned into a ton of fun; thanks to the help from our families, who brought in the donuts and coffee for everyone who showed up early on a Sunday to support us. It was really great to see how many people showed up so early to support us and watch the first episode. I was a happy little camper at the end of Comikaze!

Here is a recap of their fun panel at Comikaze!

sweethearts3

Surprisingly, one of the first major hold ups was getting a composer. Kit pointed out that you “gotta have the right people” which is key to making successful projects. Both Kit and Silver were happily amazed at how grand the whole project turned out to be. They filmed a little over a week solid with what they described as a very professional crew. Writer, Michael Premsrirat, explained that it can become an “intense little campaign when you work on a small shoot” and either you will want to kill each other or you will have each other’s back at the end.

sweethearts5

Actress Megan Alyse commented on how it all “happened really quickly.” She felt that it had not all settled in yet and she would like to “see how it goes” in terms of seeing how people react to the show. The director of the series, Dexter Adriano, recalled how this project was the “closest you could get to having a professional crew without having a professional crew.” He went on to say that they “found their legs as we went on” and that they were sad by day eight because they found their stride but were almost done. Premsrirat joked about pitching his ideas to Adriano by quoting Adriano’s reaction, “That! I like that” after hearing the cosplay show pitch.

Even though they had a successful kickstarter, waiting to see if they would make their goal was rather nerve wracking for those involved. Kit confessed, “my self-esteem goes up and down with the kickstarter.” Alyse said she even downloaded the kickstarter app just to stalk their own campaign. They chose to do a series funded by kickstarter so they could retain creative control. Kit explained that “kickstarter lets you stay in charge” and that “the Hollywood model destroys visions.” Silver was “still in shock” after seeing the final episode.

Currently they are looking into the festival circuit. The first episode airs today (11/27) on YouTube!

sweethearts10

Fun fact: They did plan out the comic book series within the show though not much of that comes across in the show but both Kit and Silver exclaimed, “we know it!

Most conventions have “how to” panels, but you need to know more than just how to get into a business, you need to know what it takes to survive. There was such a panel at Comikaze and it focused on what it takes to work in the special effects industry.

StanWinston

From Left to Right: Matt Winston, John Cherevka, Bruce D. Mitchell, Dawn Dininger, and Richard Cetrone

The panel started off going down the line and the panelists gave one word that they felt describes what you need to make it in the fx industry. John Cherevka (painter) said you need a “drive.” He went on to say, “you need to know the difference between good and bad work so that you can improve.” “No one is a natural. You learn from experience” (Cherevka).  Bruce D. Mitchell (fabricator) chose persistence. He explained that “you gotta love this because you need to be able to survive the slow times.” He added that “you need to maintain a relationship with the shops you worked at” because it is “easy to be forgotten when you first start out.” So make sure to keep people updated on what you are working on! The theme continued with Dawn Dininger (fabricator) adding “determination.” She also said the better you get along with people, the better you work with people. Matt Winston (son of Stan Winston and Co-Founder of the Stan Winston School) expanded on Dininger’s comment by saying his father’s greatest attribute was that “people loved to work with him.” When you enjoy working with your fellow co-workers, your work will be better and they will be more willing to help you out when you need it. Richard Cetrone (suit performer) concluded with “persevere” and explained how you cannot be claustrophobic in the suits/masks. You “gotta have a passion for it… gotta eat, sleep, breath what you desire.” Everyone agreed that networking is key and that you need to meet as many people as you can. All excellent advice and it can all be applied to other job fields (or life in general) as well!

Speaking of other jobs, Winston  quoted his father by stating, “If you have a fall back, you WILL fall back.” You need to do this because this is what you want to do for the rest of your life. Extremely sound advice for all artists out there. Another thing Winston pointed out was that you “need to be supportive of other people’s journeys and dreams” and if you are going to attack anyone, “attack your own dreams.” I think this is something many people do; they get caught up in being jealous of other people’s success and they try to tear them down. We need to encourage each other to succeed because if we focus negatively on someone else too much, we lose the focus our own lives.

There was a helpful/informative Q&A after the panel where attendees asked generic to extremely specific questions. One person asked about CGI and how they felt about it. Winston replied, “Don’t hate CGI. Hate that CGI is looked at as the only option.” It is unfortunate that many films have moved away from practical effects towards CGI because there is just something real and tangible when practical effects are used. Winston’s last piece of advice was “become a traditional artist as well as high tech.”  It is wonderful when the two can work together and enhance the effect! I asked the last question which was, “After working in the industry, can you watch film without critiquing/analyzing how it was done?” Winston and Dininger said “yes” but Mitchell, Cherevka and Cetrone were a strong unanimous “no.”

Grimm2

Last year at the Long Beach Comic and Horror Con, I was introduced to an animated version The Grimm Fairy Tales. They were doing a kickstarter campaign at the time and have since met their goal! Their panel at Comikaze started off with a humorous warning by Jon Schnepp, the series/film’s director, who made it clear this animated project was not for kids by swearing up a storm. Pretty much, “if you don’t like swearing and violence, get the f**k out!” Only a couple of people left the room and the rest of us laughed at the effective warning.

Grimm3

I said series/film because currently The Grimm Fairy Tales has one pilot episode but they would love to make more episodes or work on a feature. They are currently looking into getting on a network with either the series or a film. Animation costs money and being with a network would be a big step for this project. It did seem like Schnepp would prefer a series because “TV has so much freedom…Make what you want and more.” Another benefit of doing a series he pointed out was that you can do what many of us already do via Netflix, binge watch. Who doesn’t love watching episodes back to back to back?! Also, a series would provide the opportunity to do many more stories utilizing the tons of material available (Zenescope‘s “Grimm Fairy Tales” comics recently released issue 75!).

Grimm5

The “heart of it is very similar to the comics,” said Joe Brusha in regards to the animated The Grimm Fairy Tales. Several different artists/animators worked on various parts of the story and characters. If, and when, they continue the series, new and old artists will be incorporated just like the pilot. The art style does vary from the comics but it still has that sex appeal. The animation for the pilot is somewhere between stop motion comics and Archer. Schnepp mentioned how he had control over the style choice and they chose that particular method (effectively digital puppetry) because it was “economically the best way to do it”; though he would have wanted a more fluid style. After watching it, however, I think the style aids the comic book aspect of the show. I don’t personally care much for motion comics but this had a cool style unto its own.

A common problem they have run into is that most people assume since it is animated that it is for kids, or if they said no, it is an adult cartoon then people assume it is porn. No, this is a cartoon made by adults for adults. Schnepp recalled the inception of the project as he just wanted to “make something for adults that I would want to see.” If you like cartoons for adults like Heavy Metal, Fire and Ice, Wizards, etc. then you need to check out The Grimm Fairy Tales!

Check out the trailer below to get a feel for the show!

kite4

Anime does not often translate well to live action movies/TV shows but that does not stop filmmakers from trying. The most recent adaptation will be Kite (the anime pronounces it “key tay”); an extremely violent story of an orphaned girl who becomes an assassin. At the panel, it was revealed that the movie will be a more mainstream version though they plan to keep the graphic violence. One of the film’s producers, Brian Cox, said, “There are lots of things in that anime that we couldn’t do”. He was referring to the sex and certain action scenes. However, Cox went on to say that they wanted to “stay true to the feel of the anime…the tone.” The cast and crew on the panel all seemed to be familiar with the anime and enjoyed the source material. At least they did their homework.

IMAG4470cropped

From left to right: India Eisley, Callan McAuliffe, Ralph Ziman, Moises Cosio, and Brian Cox

Now how do you make animated characters seem real and fleshed out? Director, Ralph Ziman, recalled that he, “liked the script…liked the way the actors breathed life into these characters.” Ziman felt the actors made these characters feel like real people. The star of the film, India Eisley, did extensive training for three months to prep for the action sequences. She might have had an advantage being that her dad is a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. She mentioned he helped out a little too. She said she enjoyed training in general and she “enjoyed the weapons training more than anything”. During a Q&A, one of the audience members wondered if the petite Eisley was able to handle the stunts. The director joked that she “knocked a couple stuntmen’s teeth out”. He then went on to tell a startling tale of how Eisley jumped off a moving bus when she was not supposed to but, fortunately, it turned out all right.

Eisley mentioned how her brother was worried about her doing the film but was relieved to learn not all of the content in the anime would be included. Eisley’s trainer gave her a copy of the anime and Eisley made sure to watch it because she “wanted to be familiar with it” but she also wanted to make full use of the script. Due to the violence, this will probably be an R rated film, but Cox felt it would not be a hard R rating. The film should be finished by early December and they are looking into US distribution by Christmas.

 kite2

The film was shot during a grueling six day a week schedule in Johannesburg, South Africa. Even though the city is a bit run down, it was perfect for this film and they were able to incorporate a lot of streets and rundown areas. They mainly chose the location for monetary reasons, but once they got there, they were blown away. Cox recalled that it looks like, “Mad Max in reality.” Ziman added how the city was a melting pot of cultures and styles. Eisley pointed out that it “looks like it could be anywhere.” The film is set in a world not too dissimilar from our world today; a dystopian near future. The trailer definitely had that feel to it. The look is high contrast yet de-saturated colors. Eisley’s character wears colored wigs which radiate on the screen. One other item belonging to the character that fans might wonder about are the earrings. Yes, the earrings will be featured and they have included a back story for them.

The trailer/clips had gorgeous cinematography! The overall color scheme was dark tones, de-saturated but with some key vibrant colors (mainly her wigs). The action looked really good! The fx was bloody awesome; one particular scene involved a hand being shot. Her look is NOT like the anime at all. I felt it had more of an Alias vibe with the colored wigs. They wanted to avoid the school girl look because the actress already looks young. Ziman felt the wigs gave her more varied looks and ways to hide (she is an assassin after all). It was not a nod to French graphic novels.

Back to the violence because that is a big part of this story, Ziman mentioned the “comic book violence was definitely inspired by the anime.” Cox added that the “violence was enhanced by visual fx”. The trailer/clips showed some awesome violence and fx! I have watched and enjoyed the anime, and was impressed by the live action trailer/scenes. Why did this particular anime get chosen for a real life reboot? Cox explained it well by saying the anime “seemed like the most outrageous property and that was what was attractive about it”. Cox also said that he is generally a fan of the author’s work (Yasuomi Umetsu).

kite3

The Professional is a successful film and Hanna did pretty well at the box office (including world wide box office numbers). Colombiana does not quite count (though there are many similarities) because she is an adult for a majority of the film. Maybe audiences enjoy the little female assassin story line. American audiences do like violence in their action movies and Kite appears ready to deliver. Will fans of the anime be disappointed yet again by another adaptation? It is hard to say. As I said, I watched the anime (I own it actually), enjoyed it, and I was rather impressed by the live action trailer so I will definitely be checking it out when it comes to theaters.

Currently there is no official web page for the film but the panel mentioned that it should be up by the end of the year. There is a Japanese site currently available (if you can read Japanese).

The film, by the way, also stars Samuel L. Jackson!

Tune in Tokyo is back for another FUN dance party/concert event FRIDAY 11/22! I have been attending Tune in Tokyo events for a couple years now and they are awesome! Check out my interview with Greg, the event director and co-founder of Tune in Tokyo, to learn more about this spectacular event!

 tuneintokyo2

1. What is Tune in Tokyo and how long has it been around?

Tune in Tokyo is our DJ unit, and we’re also promoters. We established LA’s first monthly J-Pop and Jrock event in 2008. We produce and host club parties, live showcases and fashion shows with an Asian pop emphasis.

2. What is your involvement with Tune in Tokyo?

I am the Event Director and a co-founder, along with Del Martin (a.k.a. DJ Del). We plan and organize our events, and also spin and MC.

3. How was that name chosen? Is there any special meaning?

It’s catchy. We wanted to evoke the idea of retro radio—and also that we’re a J-Pop unit. Although, of course our playlist goes beyond J-Pop–including K-Pop, global Indie and electro, and Asian rock.

4. What has been your favorite event you’ve hosted with Tune in Tokyo?

We’ve had a lot of fun events over the years—our collaboration with NHK World’s “J-MELO” program was memorable. Our series at Royal/T Maid Cafe were some of our favorites, particularly our “Holiday Hot Mess” Gyaru-themed party, and “Bad Girl / Good Girl” school uniform party inspired by the Japanese “Girl Boss” genre. Our appearance at KCON 2013, and our second outing at Pacific Media Expo were also quite enjoyable. Our “Sakura Bomb” series at 2nd Street Jazz gave us the opportunity to work with a lot of great bands—being immersed in live music like that is priceless.

5. How many other people are involved?

The core unit features the founding members—DJs Del, Tora, Ally and myself. We serve as both DJs and event organizers, and have been working together since 2008.

Our lineup has also featured DJs Yuki and Charleett, in addition to Risa Light of Cherry-Jelly Productions, Mandie Bettencourt (a.k.a. Geeky Glamorous) and Tommy Pedrini of Cars on Mars. We’ve also had the support of a number of great people on the operational side.

tuneintokyo1

6. Tell us about the last Tune in Tokyo event.

We just launched our new monthly event, HEMISPHERE in Little Tokyo, with Del, Tora, Ally and me behind the decks. This was our first night at our new location, Nirvana. It also featured our good friends Apocalipstick, a great pop-punk band.

 tuneintokyo3

7. When is your next event and where will it be?

HEMISPHERE returns on Friday, November 22nd to Nirvana Bar & Grill. We’re going to have the amazing MEISHI SMILE as a guest DJ, and we’ll also be welcoming J-Pop and Ani-Song cover band Candy Bomber featuring cosplayer Paprika Mari as special guests.

tuneintokyo5

8. How would you describe the Tune in Tokyo events?

We’re throwing a dance party, where people who love Asian pop, and global music and fashion can get together. It’s a great place to meet people who might listen to Asian music, but also are interested in things like Japanese street fashion, video game and 8-Bit culture, and anime and Asian dramas. There’s a great alternative nightlife in Los Angeles that has arisen around these things, and we’re happy to be a part of it.

Our new venue, Nirvana, features an Izukaya menu including sushi and other snacks, and has plenty of tables and comfortable seating, so it’s a great place to relax and enjoy our playlist! We also host a band every month, so you can check out some of our favorite Indie and Jrock-inspired artists here in LA.

9. Do people dress up? Do you HAVE to dress up?

A lot of people dress up, but its not required. We prefer a chill atmosphere. But we also know that there are a lot of Japanese and alt/geek fashion fans out there who are looking for somewhere to go that reflects their lifestyle. We’re always excited to see cutting-edge fashion at our events, so its certainly welcomed. But the bottom line is, our parties are for everyone!

10. What if someone has never listened to Jpop and Kpop? Will they still enjoy the music? What kind of music would you compare it to?

The theme of HEMISPHERE is “global music for the masses”–we’ve put together an event that appeals to fans of J-Pop and K-Pop, but is also accessible to people who may not be familiar with the genres but are looking for something different.

You’re as likely to hear Lady Gaga, Najoua Belyzel, Belanova or Britney Spears alongside our core favorites like Girls Generation, Perfume, Bigbang, or Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. The thread that runs through our sets is global electro and electrohop—we like it lively and danceable. We strive to make our playlists fun and catchy, and we drop a lot of great videos—as we VJ our sets—so even if you don’t know the music, you’re going to experience something new and interesting!

Adult Swim (AdultSwim.com), launched in 2001, is Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.’s network offering original and acquired animated and live-action series for young adults. Created by Masashi Kishimoto, NARUTO was first introduced in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in Japan in 1999 and quickly became that country’s most popular ninja manga properties. In the NARUTO manga and animated series, Naruto Uzumaki wants to be the best ninja in the land. He’s done well so far, but Naruto knows he must train harder than ever and leaves his village for intense exercises that will push him to his limits. Sakura’s a medic ninja, Gaara’s advanced to Kazekage, and Kakashi…well he remains the same. But pride isn’t necessarily becoming of a ninja, especially when Naruto realizes that Sasuke never returned from his search for Orochimaru. Plus, the mysterious Akatsuki organization is still an ever-present danger. As Naruto finds out more about the Akatsuki’s goals, he realizes that nothing in his universe is as it seems. Naruto is finding that he’s older, but will he also prove wiser and stronger?

Why Sherlock? How did that particular detective become an icon? That was part of the focus of this panel along with looking at the different adaptations over the years. Panelist Bonnie MacBird, pointed out that Sherlock is a “classic superhero” but he has an “Achilles heel that makes him interesting”. She also mentioned that those stories remind us of a simpler time where honor was paramount, and that “the friendship with Watson makes their world come alive”. You cannot have a super hero without a villain and Sherlock’s infamous rival, “Moriarty appeals to people” explained panelist Daniel Corey. He went on to explain that in the world of Sherlock and Moriarty, one just has to find the evil and solve it, making one a hero. These characters have a singular focus, explained Corey, “the game is all there is” for them.

The panelists were asked how they were exposed to Sherlock Holmes with most of them answering that they read the books. However, panelist Sam Weller said his first exposure to the great detective was the animated Great Mouse Detective movie. I think that was also how I came to know the character, that and Young Sherlock Holmes. How did you first encounter Sherlock Holmes?

So what makes a good Sherlock adaptation? One panelist, Sax Carr, does not buy characters that are the best at everything. He wants to see the “dark side of that gift.” A few of the panelists like how the BBC’s Sherlock is a genius but has lost touch with the outside world. MacBird pointed out that the TV show House is another example of a flawed but brilliant character and, in a subtle way, is also an adaptation of Sherlock Holmes. House even has his own Watson in Wilson. MacBird also expressed how she does not like the criticism of ‘too much action’ in the Robert Downy Jr. Sherlock films because the original cannon and short stories actually do have lots of action.

The original story is always the best, but to the to wrap up the panel, the panelists were asked their favorite adaptations of Sherlock and here are their favorites: The Great Mouse Detective, Without a Clue, Sherlock Hound, Detective Comics, BBC’s Sherlock, and Jeremy Brett’s and Robert Downy Jr.’s portrayals. What is your favorite Sherlock Holmes adaptation?

geekgirlsFrom Left to Right: Ariel Schudson, Melissa Molina, Abby Darkstar, Molly McIsaac, and Keith Zen

You have probably heard some of the recent debate about “fake geek girls” and “cosplay does not equal consent”. If you have managed to bypass these often heated arguments (mainly nasty online comment wars), the main idea is that women’s geek cred is often brought into question by male geeks and sexy cosplay outfits do not permit sexual harassment. I have read many of the articles about each of these topics and wanted to see what this panel had to say about the subjects.

Early on, panelist Melissa Molina, explained the “fake” geek girl situation as, “We have always been bullied and now we are bullying each other.” The panelists were unanimous in thinking the concept of the fake geek girl is outrageous and pointed out there are no attacks on fake geek guys. Each woman on the panel mentioned how female geeks are often interrogated on their geek cred by male geeks. They went on to discuss the question of ‘how is liking one thing fake?’ It is as if geek girls have to know everything about EVERYTHING to qualify as a geek, but it is ok to like just one geek thing! However, “Anything can qualify anyone as a geek”, explained panelist Abby Darkstar. Why are geek guys so mean towards geek girls? Panelist Molly McIsaac summed it up in a humorous way by saying, “The boys are mad that the pretty girls are invading their clubhouse.” Keith Zen, the one man on the panel, added that being a geek was, “something that used to be theirs and they don’t want to share.” Darkstar pointed out why this happens by acknowledging, “You are insecure and want to put someone else down.”

geekgirl2

Example of a geek girl being called out but totally owning her cosplay albeit on the aggressive side

Speaking of being pretty, there is a stereotype that geeky girls are not attractive. Molina asked, “Do you want us to look haggard all the time?” It was mentioned how as a geek girl you somehow cannot be pretty too; as if you could not be smart AND attractive. Why can’t women like super hero comics and like to be girly too?

Women not only want to be able to be girly, they want to be able to be sexy too without fear of harassment. Yes, you can wear that skimpy costume but be aware, be responsible and be ready to take the steps to do something about it suggested Darkstar (who was cosplaying fem Indiana Jones). One simple step is just talking to other geek girls about it. Maybe someone will be encouraged by your story or learn something from it. Now, if someone is harassing you, male or female, do not be abusive back. You need to be mature and professional. Panelist Ariel Schudson framed it well by saying, “It’s a power thing. Someone has to have power over you.” Wear the costume you want to wear but be aware that you are pretty much the “personification of a sexual fantasy” (McIsaac).

On the other hand, if you see someone wearing a sexy costume, ask them if you can take a picture. Do not be a creeper and sneak a picture of their butt or whatever and think they will not notice. A couple of the panelists mentioned how they would much rather someone ask to take a picture of their backside and they would gladly pose instead of hearing the creepy whispers behind them.

Zen was all for men and women wearing the costume they want but he pointed out that you need to know people are going to stare. There is nothing wrong with staring and taking pictures (just no creeper pictures), but that is it! Just because a guy or girl is wearing something revealing does NOT give anyone the liberty to touch them or otherwise harass them.

What can be done about this sexual harassment? The main thing is conventions MUST have a harassment policy that details what harassment is and enforce the consequences of breaking those policies. Schudson mentioned the ADA Initiative and explained how they “Wrote and encouraged adoption of policies preventing harassment of women, now used by hundreds of conferences and organizations in open tech/culture as well as science fiction, fan, gaming, and skeptic/atheist conventions.” So this is not something that just happens at geek/nerd conventions.

We all need to be good role models and proponents for change; part of that is being “more open to everything” (Schudon). Do not claim geek culture as your own and exclude others. You should be happy you have even more people with whom to share your love of geek culture. In the end, we are all fans.

Often books are made into movies and sometimes the reverse happens. It is a way to relive the film and maybe see it in a new light. Hayao Miyazaki’s beloved film, My Neighbor Totoro (which turns 25 this year!), has received this treatment and is now available as a hardcover book! This book also includes original watercolor illustrations by Miyazaki which are beautiful and finally all together in one book for the first time. As you read the book, Miyazaki’s watercolor illustrations make the pages come to life.

The book was written by Japanese children’s book author Tsugiko Kubo. I watched My Neighbor Totoro many years ago and thoroughly enjoyed reliving the film through Kubo’s words. The book is pretty easy to read though there are some big words for the young adult reader. The pacing flows well and I enjoyed reading about how Satsuki (the main character) really felt and thought; the way only a book can tell you. In a time where books are moving to the digital medium, it is nice to hold this book in your hands and turn the pages. It is compact in size with a lovely cover.

My Neighbor TOTORO: The Novel is about two young girls, Satsuki (age eleven) and her younger sister Mei (age four), who move to the countryside from Tokyo with their father in order to be closer to their mother, who is in a special hospital. The house they move into is a bit rundown but that only makes the girls more determined to make it a comfortable home. However, they are not alone in their new place. There are soot sprites and other magical creatures that live there but quickly disappear from sight with the new tenants. Near their home is a magnificent giant Laurel tree that is home to the forest spirit Totoro who mysteriously leads the girls on some magical adventures.

The story is charming and the book focuses on family and friendship and people helping each other out. If you have already seen the film, you will enjoy approaching the story from a new perspective, or may want to get it to share with someone who has yet to experience the wonder of My Neighbor Totoro. If you are not familiar with this story at all, you should check out what made it a classic!

My Neighbor TOTORO: The Novel is available for $17.99.

Also to celebrate the film’s 25th anniversary, VIZ Media’s Studio Ghibli Library will debut an updated edition of the MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO Picture Book available for $19.99!

Most everyone loves Christmas. Now, how about a manga centered around Santa, but this time Santa is a cute seventeen year old girl and her reindeer is her servant? Oh, and he is really cute! Sweet Rein v.1 opens with young Kurumi Sagara, who is about to spend Chistmas alone until she bumps into a handsome young guy named Kaito (who happens to be a magical reindeer!). An invisible (to humans) reign connects them to each other and Kaito tells Kurumi she is his master because she is now Santa Claus.

This manga has all the adorable/cutesy/ romantic bits you want in a shojo manga (manga mainly targeted toward 10-18 year old girls with a primary focus on relationships). I loved it! It is sweet, funny and has heart! You might even say it borders on cheesy but I enjoyed every second of it. The bond between these two characters is explored and not just taken for granted. Kurumi even asks, ” Aren’t you upset to lose your freedom?” She does not accept the whole master and servant relationship (at first) and I like that the author has the character ask questions I would have wanted answered.

Actually, the relationship between Kurumi and Kaito kind of reminds me of the relationship between Haruhi and Tamaki in Ouran High School Host Club. It is refreshing that Kurumi speaks her mind and does not swoon all over Kaito; he is the one doing the swooning. The art style is a little similar to Ouran High School Host Club too with its pretty characters, their wispy hair blowing in the wind and the super expressive moments where you know exactly how these 2D characters are feeling. The author/artist, Sakura Tsukuba, did an excellent job of conveying movement and expression and you almost see the scene move as you read it.

Yes, the plot is a little strange but what manga/anime isn’t? Sweet Rein is a delightful read that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside and gush over the romantic moments. If you like romantic stories or just want something playful to read, you should check this one out!

Sweet Rein is available starting 11/5 with VIZ Media’s November releases and will be retailing for $9.99. Cute holiday gift idea; just saying. Plus there is a vampire bonus short story at the end!

Hi! My name is Kari Lane, and I’ve been an anime lover since I was a little girl. Those good old days when classics like Sailor MoonDragon Ball/Dragon Ball ZCard Captor SakuraDigimon and Monster Rancher were on the most basic of cable.

Over the years, I have expanded my anime repertoire and have attended numerous anime conventions. I’m currently a host on Neo-Cinema, a web-based anime and Japanese live-action movie review show. Recently, I’ve been watching the first few episodes of various anime series’, and thought it an excellent idea to write reviews based on my “first impressions”. Of course, you’ll have many unanswered questions after viewing just 4, 5, or 6 episodes, but you can get a feel for the show and decide if you want to continue watching! I hope my reviews will help introduce you to some awesome anime, or help you avoid the more mediocre junk that’s out there!

magi1

Another anime show that dominated the cosplay scene at Anime Expo this past year was Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic. It is a fun Japanese take on the Arabian Nights/Aladdin tales. The show opens up with a mysterious boy in a strange room and a rather dark tone. Who is this boy? Then it goes to a desert town in an ancient land where we meet Alibaba who seems to be a nice young man working much too hard for a cruel master. The mystery boy reappears in one of the carts Alibaba is loading and after several mishaps the two become friends. The boy’s name is Aladdin but not much else is known about him as he does not really know who he is either. Alibaba explains he wants to conquer a dungeon, strange towers that appeared ten years ago, because those who conquer them will have riches and possibly gain possession of a powerful magic being called a Djinn (pretty much a giant blue genie minus the wishes). Thus, Alibaba and Aladdin set out on the adventure of becoming Dungeon Capturers!

magi7

 magi5

The style of animation is similar to the anime of the late 90s and early 2000s, like Tenchi Muyo and Trigun. The color palette is dominated by lighter colors and few shadows. However, they do utilize bright crazy hair colors. The one thing that weirds me out about this show is they draw their teeth rather large. Most anime characters have a thin white line to show the upper teeth but on this show, it takes up almost half the mouth. It almost looks like they have buck teeth. That is just a personal gripe but otherwise I really enjoy the style of the show. Also, I love how they incorporate extremely expressive moments and change the style of the character to convey that emotion (similar to Blue Exorcist). It often makes the moment comedic and makes it easier to understand how the character actually feels.

magi9

magi6

The main characters are likable and the bad guys are really evil. You care where these characters are going and you worry about them as the bad guys plot their malice. Aladdin can be super goofy one moment (apparently he LOVES boobs) and a serious philosopher the next (like Vash from Trigun). He raises questions like a child would ask, such as why remain a slave when your chains have been broken and why work for someone who is cruel to you? These questions seem simple but the older characters struggle to answer. Clues have been laid out indicating that many of the main characters have mysterious pasts. Where do they come from? How did they get to where they are?

magi8

Overall, this is an entertaining show with adventure, some cool action scenes, and a focus on friendship/family, loyalty and standing up for what you believe in. I will definitely keep watching to see where Aladdin and Alibaba’s adventures take them! So, take the magic carpet ride and let this anime take you to a faraway land!

You can watch the show in subtitles on VIZ Anime and Crunchyroll.

(The entire season is available)

You can watch the show in English on Neon Alley.

Blood and Guts is back for another fantastically bloody season! This marks the 3rd season for the YouTube series that focuses on practical effects. Read on to get an in depth look at the show via an interview with the show’s director-producer, Jack Bennett!

http://youtu.be/lZo7ATlAwcs

Teaser for Blood and Guts season 3

What is the show ‘Blood and Guts’ all about?

It’s a celebration of makeup effects artists, creature creators, and all the practical effects artists who were the cornerstones of our favorite movies. The film industry is sidelining a lot of amazing talents who are at the top of their game and create extraordinary effects that we’re often missing out of because it’s easier for studios to spend effects dollars in post rather than putting them in a production budget. The show is a chance for us to showcase the kinds of effects we’ve been missing, and also revel in some gore whenever it’s appropriate.

What should people expect for season 3?

An original character designed specifically for Scott by Academy Award winning makeup artist Joel Harlow, an in-depth look at the creation of an original maze for Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights, an appearance by a genuine horror icon, a melted Scott head, a look back at the groundbreaking work that came out of Stan Winston Studios… all that and more!

What has been the best thing about working on this show?

Just getting to focus on what I love about genre movies, and getting a chance to look at the reality of what went into making these sights that you kind of took for granted when you first saw them. In a weird way that’s the point: they’re effects, you’re not supposed to say “Wow, great effect,” you’re supposed to just accept the reality of what you’re seeing. The best for me is just meeting these people who I’ve admired and in some cases I’ve been in awe of for much of my life, and getting to ask them all my stupid fanboy questions. Seeing Scott get excited about the same stuff is up there too.

What had been your favorite practical effect done on the show thus far?

At the risk of sounding like we peaked early, it’s hard to beat Jerry Constantine’s chainsaw gag in the third episode of Season 1. But I love every episode. Jennifer Aspinall turned Scott into a fat old hippie so we could walk him into a guitar store unrecognized, how great is that? I got to be face-to-face with the very wolf that attacked Griffin Dunne in An American Werewolf in London. The animatronic characters at Spectral Motion and studioADI, can’t beat those. Shooting an action scene at Ron Trost’s with Scott was a blast, with Scott running in the snow and bullet hits going off all around him. Gary Tunnicliffe did a great zombie bite for us, shooting that with an actress named Vanessa Cate ripping out part of Scott’s neck was a highlight. The design of Joel Harlow’s Deep One hybrid, who Scott affectionately called The Fishman, was stunning. It’s an unsettling face. When it was finished Scott, was posing for photos and it was hard to make eye contact when he’d turn to me. Then Tony Gardner did something in his episode, the October 17th one, that lifted my spirits in a way few things have in my adult life. In the raw footage you hear me say “I’m so fulfilled,” when I heard my own voice while I was editing I could hear how much I meant it. All because of a gory effect, the kind of thing that would make a non-fan roll their eyes. Or cover them.

Has anything you’ve seen on the show grossed you out?

I’m so desensitized I don’t react to the actual mechanics of it beyond awe at the craft. So much so that I screened the Rob Hall episode, in which Scott gets his face sliced clean off his skull, to a classroom full of college kids as part of a lecture, and it did not even occur to me to warn them how graphic it was. When I saw their faces and heard them gasp, I was confused for a second. Then I remembered oh, right, not everyone is fucking warped like I am. It takes a really great film, something like Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance or Oldboy, to get me to react to the violence, and even then it’s the story and the characters and my attachment to them that give me that dreadful feeling in my stomach. I’m not a true crime guy, real-life violence in life continues to appall me, but I still love it in movies. The grossest, grisliest, most terrifying images are all fantastic to me just so long as they’re fake.

Make sure to tune in every Thursday in October for another awesome episode of Blood and Guts on the Nerdist channel!

In case you missed them, here are episodes 1 and 2! Make sure to check later today for episode 3!

Here is a press release from the Nerdist marking the season’s debut:

Following two successful seasons, Blood and Guts with Scott Ian has returned to the Nerdist Channel with Season 3. The Season 3 premiere – which features Johnny Depp’s regular makeup designer, Academy Award winner Joel Harlow – can be viewed on the Nerdist Channel: [http://youtu.be/ki08bC2ZpuM]

Blood and Guts is hosted by Scott Ian, guitarist and founding member of legendary metal band Anthax. Ian, a longtime horror aficionado, gives viewers a behind-the-scenes looks at how some of the all-time greatest practical effects artists create the gore and monsters that genre fans love. The series differs from typical behind-the-scenes shows due to Ian’s infectious excitement and curiosity, coupled with the clever ways the effects are integrated into each episode. Ian is often the one in the makeup chair, experiencing squibs, gore appliances and complex character makeups with rare enthusiasm.

“I’ve been into horror longer than music, longer than comics. It was my first true nerd-love,” says Ian. “And that love affair still burns hot all these years later. Horror has been a huge influence on my music career, my writing, and now I get to actually be a part of it by hosting Blood and Guts. It’s my dream gig.”Previous guests on the show included the likes of 7 time Academy Award winner Rick Baker, Greg Nicotero of The Walking Dead and frequent Guillermo Del Toro collaborators Spectral Motion. Season 3 of Blood and Guts ups the ante with an original creature created by Joel Harlow exclusively for the series, unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to the creation of Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights and an episode with Tony Gardner that includes a surprise visit from a legendary horror character, reprised by the original actor.Blood and Guts with Scott Ian is produced by Chris Hardwick’s Nerdist Channel as part of their partnership with Youtube, with episodes premiering online alongside All-Star Celebrity Bowling and other Nerdist content. The show was originally launched with Fangoria’s involvement, but Nerdist has taken on full production duties for Season 3. The dedicated crew remains the same, with Jack Bennett directing and producing each episode. “The show works in two ways,” explains Bennett. “You can watch it in awe of the extraordinary talent of these artists, or you can tune in to see Scott get his face ripped off. I love both.”

uzumaki9

Junji Ito’s horror manga, Uzumaki, will be released in an omnibus edition tomorrow October 15th and will retail for $27.99 US. This edition will be a hardcover format including all 19 chapters plus a bonus “lost chapter” (and 12 color pages).

 uzumaki2

The story follows young Kirie Goshima and her boyfriend Shuichi Saito who live in a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan. Shuichi believes the town is cursed by spirals. It sounds a little silly at first but this manga is definitively dark and disturbing. In the beginning, the stories are in the format of a “monster of the week” but towards the last third of the book a plot evolves that explores what is behind the spiral curse.

uzumaki8

The characters/environment/situations are drawn in a realistic way and sometimes you could say there is too much detail. This makes you become more attached to the characters because they seem like they could be real people. However, there is not a lot of character development besides the two main characters but that is partly because most of the side characters do not survive to the next chapter. The characters are drawn in such a way that all of their emotions are easy to read and when they are exaggerated, they are that much more intense. The art style utilizes shadows and an overall darkness that contributes to the horror feel of the story.

uzumaki4

Many of the stories have some of the creepiest and gut wrenching visuals that stay with you. I do not want to give too much away but I included some pages/visuals to give you an idea of the art style and convey some of the gruesome imagery. I would not say it is “scary” but it creeps up on you and grosses you out. Ito did an excellent job of showing movement in stationary 2D images. There is a part (spoiler) where a woman holds a pair of scissors up and is about to smash them into her ear. You do not see it happen but your brain fills in the movement. Numerous parts in this manga are like that. They lead you into a horrendous situation and suddenly another horrible thing is happening.

uzumaki3

I enjoyed Ito’s previous collection, Museum of Terror – Tomie, and he did not disappoint with Uzumaki. This is a must for horror readers! You get tons of gore and horror in this big package! Side note, if you feel as wigged out as I did after, make sure to read the humorous afterward to make yourself feel a little better.

Fall is in full swing and you know what that means? New fall shows! VIZ Media is celebrating the one-year anniversary of its 24/7 Neon Alley anime channel this month! Neon Alley is a service that is available to fans across North America via the PlayStation®3 (PS3™) and PlayStation®Network, the Xbox 360® and Xbox LIVE® and via PC/Mac web access. They also announced the launch of the new “Catch Up” feature for Xbox and PS3.

The Neon Alley fall season starts THIS Friday, October 18th and includes the highly anticipated high definition return of Ranma ½ to North America along with the exclusive dub premiere of Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic. Additional premieres this season include Gurren Lagaan, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Revolutionary Girl Utena, along with the latest episodes of ongoing favorites Bleach, Naruto Shippuden, and One Piece.

To learn more about this cool site we interviewed Program Manager Kevin Kleinrock!

What is your involvement with Neon Alley?

I was brought in originally as the Program Manager.  VIZ had been working on the idea of Neon Alley for quite some time and then decided to bring in someone to tie all of the pieces together and get the channel launched.  That was when I joined the company in Spring of last year.

Once the channel launched in the Fall, I transitioned into the role of Program Director and moved from the mostly project management side into managing the day to day of the network overall.  Throughout the day I’ll be involved with the technical side of things, marketing, production, business development – my involvement is rather widespread at this point.

What is so special Neon Alley?

Neon Alley is a truly unique and amazing platform in the awesome anime space.  First, we are the only linear 24/7 all English dubbed, all uncut and uncensored anime experience.  While there are a plethora of on-demand services out there for subtitled and dubbed content, we have built a unique anime lifestyle channel.  Not only can you sit back and have the programming delivered to you without having to know what’s hot, but you can be exposed to both classic anime you may not have seen and new series that being a member of the channel will give you a first chance to see.

Beyond the top notch programming itself, every minute of the channel is designed for the anime lifestyle.  Every commercial is for something anime or entertainment-related.  We bring you convention information and coverage.  We bring you weekly news on new releases and top 10 lists for anime, manga, digital manga and video games.  We have trivia interstitials and weekly sweepstakes and prize giveaways.  And even with our implementation of our new Catch Up feature, our linear stream delivers an extremely special experience unlike anything else available to anime fans.

What is the Catch Up feature and why did you implement it?

The Catch Up feature is to allow members to do just that – catch up!  As I was just talking about, the only thing missing from Neon Alley was a way for our members to easily catch up on a show they may have missed due to not being in front of their screen when a particular episode was on.  Now, with Catch Up, episodes are available on demand the day after they debut on the channel for at least one week.  This includes our movies as well.  So now, members can choose to watch the live stream on our schedule, or Catch Up on their schedule.

Why does Neon Alley not include all past episodes?

Neon Alley is not an on-demand platform.  We’re a linear platform that now brings our members a chance to catch up on anything they may have missed.  If you look at other services, like say Hulu Plus, most series there feature a rolling number of episodes as well.  And they ARE an on-demand platform.  The feature is meant to be a compliment to the linear channel which remains our primary service.

Magi-KeyArt6r

How do you go about selecting your fall line-up?

As with every lineup, we aim to bring the best in uncut and uncensored English anime from across the spectrum of genres and studios.  Our Fall lineup includes series and movies from VIZ, FUNimation, Aniplex, Sentai, Nozomi.  It includes the world premiere of the English dub of MAGI: THE LABYRINTH OF MAGIC, two popular series in PUELLA MAGI MADOKA MAGICA and GURREN LAGAAN, and two classic series in REVOLUTIONARY GIRL UTENA and RANMA ½.  This will be the first time RANMA  ½ is available in English in HD.  Plus, Neon Alley remains the only place to see a world premiere dub episode of NARUTO SHIPPUDEN every week!  We’re also adding a brand new live action show to our Sundays, which have featured anime and kung fu movies, as sci-fi and comic book influenced pro wrestling brand CHIKARA debuts on the network.  And these are just our premieres.  Our full fall lineup includes over three dozen more series and movies.  It’s a veritable buffet of anime – but we’re talking all killer, no filler anime.  Series like BLEACH, ONE PIECE, INUYASHA, DEATH NOTE, BLUE EXORCIST and movies like the NARUTO SHIPPUDEN films, the BERSERK: THE GOLDEN AGE ARC film series, and so much more.  Everything available as part of our 24/7 live stream and in Catch Up.

GurrenLagaan
Which show in the fall line-up are you most excited about and why?

That’s way too hard of a question to answer!  We only select shows for the network that WE would watch ourselves so each series has a special place in our hearts.  I’m excited to finally have an English dub of MAGI: THE LABYRINTH OF MAGIC.  And, from what I have seen – and heard – it’s a great dub!  I’m excited that we are bringing fan favorites PUELLA MAGI MADOKA MAGICA and GURREN LAGAAN to the channel.  And, I’m really excited that we are starting to bring the classics to Neon Alley with the addition of REVOLUTIONARY GIRL UTENA and RANMA ½ – especially with RANMA now in HD!  So truthfully, I’m excited about the entire line up!

Madoka-KeyArt

I noticed you included some older shows like Utena. What made you go with including new and old shows in your fall line-up?

Neon Alley is about bringing the best in anime, whether it’s a world premiere or if it’s a classic.   Great anime stories are timeless and series like REVOLUTIONARY GIRL UTENA and RANMA ½ will never be out of style.  It gives us a chance to see these series again and fondly remember the first time we saw them, but it also enables us to expose these series to a whole new generation of anime fan who were not following the genre when RANMA ½ debuted in the late 80s or UTENA came out in the late 90s.  That’s what is so great about having full control of our own network and programming – great shows will find their way to Neon Alley regardless of studio, genre or how old a particular title may be.  We bring our members the newest of the new and the classics all at the same time.

Utena

Besides the new fall line-up, what is next for Neon Alley?

Our focus will always remain bringing the best in 24/7 English dubbed uncut and uncensored anime.  So we will continue to work to acquire the best series, and while doing so, we’ll also be working to expand the lifestyle experience that is Neon Alley.  Neon Alley truly is an anime experience like no other and continuing to develop the pieces that make the channel exactly that remain a focus of ours.  Aside from that, we will continue to focus on expanding awareness of the channel and our one week free trial that is available at NeonAlley.com.  Anyone in the U.S. or Canada with a computer, PlayStation 3 or XBOX 360 can try the channel out for themselves and get immersed in the unique anime lifestyle experience of Neon Alley.

It’s that time of year again, fall anime season! Time to check out the new lineup and see what will get us hooked. Now with most anime shows, you have to wait a week or so to get the newest episode unless it is simulcast. Well, you are in luck! VIZ Media, the largest distributor and licensor of anime and manga in North America, just announced an online simulcast premiere (in Japanese with English subtitles) of the new sci-fi anime action series, COPPELION on VIZAnime.com (for free), as well as Hulu and Hulu Plus. The special deal with this premiere is that it will be airing October 2nd, the same day as it is broadcast in Japan! New episodes will be available for streaming domestically every Wednesday.

 Coppelion-KeyImage

Coppelion is based on the popular manga series (of the same name) created by Tomonori Inoue and it has been ongoing in Japan since 2008. Charlene Ingram, Senior Marketing Manger for Animation, explained a little bit about the series by saying, “Ibara, Aoi and Taeko are a breed of genetically engineered beings known as the Coppelion who embark on often dangerous missions to restore hope and rescue people from the forsaken city. Plenty of action and unique characters are in store as the girls slowly uncover the Old Capital’s dark secrets!” Sounds cool to me! Also, who could turn down girls kicking-ass, and rocking short school girls skirts (a staple in anime) while in action? A further description of the show was laid out by VIZ Media saying:

COPPELION takes place in the not-so-distant future as a catastrophic

event has turned the old capital of Japan into a wasteland, forever

changing the lives of its people. Decades later, three schoolgirls set

foot into the now forsaken city. They are the Coppelion, genetically

engineered humans created by the Japan Ground Self-Defense

Forces to operate under the lethal conditions of the contaminated

city. Trained since birth, the girls must use all of their skills and

resources to carry out their one and only mission: to rescue those

            left behind.

The trailer looks pretty action packed and the anime style looks good. You do not see many more people besides the three girls but I like their look. The de-saturation seems like it will work well with the post-apocalyptic world. The trailer did its job; I am curious and will definitely check out this show. Make sure to watch the premiere for free and check back later to get my initial impression of the show!

Been to most of the conventions in the states? Well, here is a brand new one and it is going to be in HAWAII! HawaiiCon just had an extremely successful Kickstarter Campaign; they doubled their goal! Early bird tickets just finished up on Sept. 21 but general ticket sales begin in January. You can sign up on the mailing list at their temporary website: www.hawaiicon.com. You can also get up to date info by going to their fb page.

Check out my interview with one of the founders of HawaiiCon, GB Hajim!

hawaii6

What exactly is Hawaii Con? How long has it been around?

HawaiiCon is a science, sci-fi and fantasy convention set on the Big Island of Hawaii full of Aloha. It’s first year will be 2014, but early bird tickets are on sale now until September 21st.

How will it be different than any other con?

HawaiiCon has all the goodness of a regular convention: panels, autographs, meet and greets, but also a chance to hang on the beach and go on real adventures with your favorite stars. Fancy snorkeling, horseback riding, a sunset sail or just a mellow hula lesson with your favorite star? We’re going to make it happen! Want to see your favorite star singing in front of a sunset over the ocean? All ready in the works!

How did this con get started?

I was casting my new live action movie Taken and Shaken to be shot here in Hawaii. The sci-fi actors and actresses I was speaking to said, “Why isn’t there a convention in Hawaii?” and I thought, “Yeah, why not?” I started doing some research and it seemed really doable. I talked to some friends and we made a core team of people to put it all together.

 hawaii3

What aspects of geek/nerd culture will the con be focusing on?

We are hosting the 10th reunion of the cast of Stargate: Atlantis, as well as mini-reunions of cast members from Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, Farscape, Star Trek, Game of Thrones, and others. We will also have comic book artists, cosplay dinners, costume contests, author/writer workshops, workshops in costuming and swordplay, LARPing on the beach and so much more. I’m also proud that we will be bringing some of the world’s top astronomers (our island has the largest collection of observatories in the world), scientists working on the manned Mars Mission, as well as aerospace experts to talk about the spaceport our island will have for commercial spaceflight.

What is your involvement with the con?

I am one of the founders, kind of a CEO, but more I serve our Khalessi of Programming Jessie Minick.

What are you most looking forward to at this particular con?

Scuba diving with Patricia Tallman (Babylon 5) and possibly Rachel Luttrell (Stargate)

What should people expect?

The WOW feeling! The place is right on Hapuna Beach which has been rated one of the top ten beaches in our country. You walk into the lobby and it is like looking out of a starship to the beach and ocean. The convention won’t be huge, so no big lines and we have so much going on that, for a small con, people will have a ton of things to choose from each day and into the night. There will be a high percentage of stars per con goer so fans will see stars around a lot on the beach, at the pool, at the bar, and on the dance floor. We are creating an experience for both stars and fans so we will all feel like we are one family – ʻohana as we say here.

hawaii

Any special guests lined up?

From Stargate Atlantis: Torri Higginson, Rachel Luttrel, Paul McGillion, Rainbow Sun Francks and Andee Frizzell

From other shows:

David Franklin (Farscape/Xena), A Tigh Reunion of Michael Hogan (Battlestar Galactica/Teen Wolf) and Kate Vernon (Battlestar Galactica), a mini Babylon 5 reunion with Claudia Christian (Babylon 5/Starhyke) and Patricia Tallman (Babylon 5/Star Trek), and voice actress extraordinaire Cree Summer (Drawn Together) so far. More to be added soon.

What will some of the special events be? Besides the Tours with Stars which is going to be so full of awesome, we have Rachel Luttrell booked to sing at one of the Gala Dinners and we’re having a special lu’au with hula…you never know who might join in the dancing! We have a lot of other great events in the works.

Might it be a bit hot for some cosplay costumes?

Actually, most summer cons across the country are far hotter. We have a constant breeze coming off the ocean and, in September when the con take place, the average air temperature is around 80. The con rooms are well air conditioned and the whole hotel is shaded, but I wouldn’t go to the beach in a Totoro costume!

hawaii2

How can people find out more information?

Right now we have super great deals on passes and hotel packages via Kickstarter. You can see the hotel and get more info there too. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/289378015/hawaiicon

We have a website (www.hawaiicon.com) with some info, but our full function website won’t be launched until November.

Every year at Anime Expo, one show seems to be cosplayed the most, and this year that anime was Attack on Titan (also translated as Advancing Giants). I had heard of it via my anime friends and they all raved about how good it was so I decided to check it out. It totally met my expectations! It is good and INTENSE! The show is set in a post apocalyptic future where strange creatures called, titans, have wiped out most of humanity. Humans retreated and built a citadel like city consisting of three circles within each other framed by massive walls. This system kept the titans out for almost a century but then a new titan appeared, a colossal titan, who broke down the outermost wall. Chaos ensues and most of the humans in that city are annihilated. Eren, his adopted sister Mikasa and their friend, Armin, narrowly escape into the next inner city. There these three young people decide to join the army to kill titans and get revenge.

attack5

attack8

This show is filled with death and destruction. Do not get too attached to any of the characters because they will probably die. It is worse than Game of Thrones or a Joss Whedon show in terms of killing off people you care about. Also, it is not just that these characters die but they are destroyed. Nearly every death is cringe worthy. Speaking of disturbing, the titans are so weird they make your stomach turn and  totally creep you out. They are giant humanoid creatures that look strange, move abnormally and, oh yeah, they eat people. The animation on this show is done so well as to make these creatures super unsettling.

attack7

Even though the humans have the odds stacked against them, you root for the underdog and hope Eren and his friends succeed in there missions. The humans do have one small advantage and that is the 3D maneuver gear. Humanity has developed a way to fight back and that is by using a device that makes you swing through the air like Spider-Man and use thick swords to slice the back of a titans neck (the only way to kill them).

attack2

The show’s style is similar to Claymore and Akira with emphasized eyes that convey the emotional intensity of a situation. At times it can be a bit much but it goes with the overall heavy feel of the show. The outlines of characters are done with thick black lines and the overall color is nicely saturated. The actual animation is seamless and perfect to show how the characters zip around with the 3D maneuver gear and how bizarre the titans move.

attack9

I liked the show so much I am caught up with the current episode on Crunchyroll. I will definitely continue watching. Will Eren be able to conquer the titans? Where do the titans come from? What are they exactly? Who will die next? Will humanity be able win this war? If you want action, fierce character driven drama, and cool animation, you should check out this show!

At a recent convention, I had the pleasure of interviewing the creative team behind the new sci-fi thriller The 5th Passenger. Read on to learn about this riveting indie film!

5P_Poster_WONDERCON_V2

Kari: Hi! This is Kari with Geekscape, and I am here with the creators of The 5th Passenger. Why don’t you introduce yourself?

Morgan: Hi! My name is Morgan Lariah and I’m the co-writer, co-producer and actress in The 5th Passenger.

Scott: I’m Scott Baker. Co-writer, producer and director.

K: Very cool. Now what got you started on this project? Where was the inception?

S: This was based off an idea that I had several years ago and I had been kind of kicking it around for awhile. I wrote a couple scenes for the feature just to kinda see how they felt and did a table read with some actor friends and then I met Morgan and she really fit one of the roles that I had written for it. So I asked her to take a look at the scenes and she liked the scenes, and we sat down and just over the next couple months just wrote out–.  Just went through and wrote out the whole film. Just kind of going back and forth. I would write a scene and she would read it and give me notes, and we would sit down and talk about it. Or read the scene out ourselves and see how it felt. It was just that kind of process going back and forth for several months as we developed the story.

K: Now, Morgan why don’t you give me the synopsis so everyone can know what this project is about?

M: Of course. So 5th Passenger is about four astronauts on an escape pod. The mothership has imploded and unfortunately the positioning system on the escape pod is broken, they’re off their flight path and they are running out of resources quickly. So in a last attempt to fix the positioning system, one of them goes out to fix it…which he does…but as he gets back into the escape pod an alien follows him in and chaos ensues…and that’s our story.

Screen Shot 2013-02-12 at 6.16.36 PM

K: And it is a full feature, correct?

M: That is correct.

K: What is the current status of the project?

M: We are in pre-production. We have some really great Star Trek actors attached. We have Manu Intiraymi, Tim Russ, Ethan Phillips and Scott is directing, of course–.  Various other key components–.  We have this amazing makeup special effects designer, Thomas Surprenant, who is fantastic–.  And  so we have this whole package together and we are just looking for some funding. So that’s where we are.

K: And then in regards to funding, how can people go check out what you have or help out?

M: Oh, super easy. People can go to our facebook page, www.facebook.com/5thpassenger and ‘like’ us, that would be awesome. We are also on twitter @5thpassenger and they can watch the trailer on our website 5thPassenger.com. So, just follow us and ‘like’ us and we’d love to hear from you. We love being here and talking to everyone. Everyone has been so positive about the trailer and it’s really really exciting and we really think this is a story that definitely has a place in today and that people want to see and hear.

K: And since you’re an actor in it, what can you tell us about your character?

M: Sure. Absolutely. So I play Eve Miller and she happens to be the commanding officer in this escape pod. These four assigned to this escape pod were–.  It was just a random assignment. So, they didn’t know each other before this and they find themselves in this intense situation and she just happens to be the only female and she happens to be younger than everyone else. So she is a very ambitious, to the book officer, but she up against a lot and they’re not making it and of course she is the one in charge so it’s her fault. So she has a lot of conflict going on.

Screen Shot 2013-02-12 at 8.08.02 PM

K: So kind of a reverse harem, but not quite?

M: That’s one way to look at it. (laughs) I don’t think Miller sees it that way. In fact, she–.  That’s something she’s constantly thinking about; that this could turn any minute. It’s a dangerous situation I think for any woman, especially given the circumstances. So, it’s, its–.  Me when I was working on it, it’s always at the back of my mind like this could go bad and in fact,… a little bit…I don’t want to give too much away, but a little bit of that does work itself into the story and I don’t know–.  I think–.  I think it’s interesting.

K: So with the close quarters, were there any bouts of claustrophobia?

Screen Shot 2013-02-12 at 8.04.46 PM

M: Absolutely, and it’s such a great story because it’s four people in a room and it’s about claustrophobia, and the fact the water is running out, oxygen is running out–.  How does that affect you? Food is running out. What does this do to your mental state, what does this do to your emotional state and of course these people are annoying cause you’re seeing them all the time. So how do you remain civil and try to make the best of things and each character approaches it in their own way of course, but it is society breaking down in this room.

K: And Scott, in terms of writing it and bringing this story about–.  Were there any particular stories that influenced you or were in the back of your mind when you were creating this content?

Screen Shot 2013-02-12 at 8.11.55 PM

S: Yeah, we sort of pitched the film as Alfred Hitchcock’s Lifeboat meets Aliens. So, it has that feel of being a lifeboat in space and Ridley Scott’s Alien was definitely one of my favorite films. So there is a lot of influence there. I grew up loving the Twilight Zone and that is like a recurring theme within that is–.  Is people put in these extreme situations and seeing how they react and how society breaks down and how people’s morals and values and ethics are tested. So those are some of the things that influenced me and of course, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Moon with Sam Rockwell was another film that like, visually is an influence as we’re kind of putting the whole package together thinking about what this ship is going to look like? What are the costumes going to be? Things like that.

Screen Shot 2013-07-29 at 9.12.18 PM

K: Since it’s the close quarters and people, it is definitely–  It sounds like its an observation on humanity and what people would do in extreme situations?

S: Yeah, yeah definitely that is the idea. I really love that kind of story. Having these characters that maybe on first glance seem very two dimensional but really they’re sort of archetypes for the different types of people that you meet every day, and seeing how they interact with each other is really just a reflection on who we are and… sorta like our animalistic instincts. And how those things play out and how everybody deals with that on a personal level–.  Where you know that person next to you is another human being and they’re part of society with you but there’s that part of you that also sees them like as a competitor, someone that you are fighting for resources over and things like that.

K: So if you both were stuck on this little spacecraft, how do you think you would fare, if it was real life?

M: I actually have great confidence that Scott and I would be fine. Scott–.  I test Scott daily (laughs) and he is always very accommodating and he’s very clever. In fact I have thought about it, and I think if you had to pick like five people to be on a desert island, I would definitely pick Scott as one of them because like I said, he’s really hilarious and we’re always laughing and he fixes things and finds the answer to a lot of problems. So, I think we would be fine.

Screen Shot 2013-02-12 at 8.05.16 PM

K: Same feelings there towards Morgan?

S: Uh yeah, I mean I think it’s great that she trusts me because she would be there for me the whole time and then right when I need her I would be able to eat her when stuff gets going bad. So I think that’s perfect. That works out great.

K: So, it’s like Survivor: you’re keeping the ally as long as you can and then when that moment strikes?

S: Exactly, exactly. Exactly. (laughs)

K: Any other final words on the project to the listeners, and any other–.  I mean you did say where to find it, but any other parting words?

M: No. We’re just really excited about the project and thank you for listening and please check out our trailer!

S: Yeah, I would say go to 5thPassenger.com and there’s a trailer there. Like us on facebook. We’re not going to be doing like a kickstarter or indiegogo kind of funding. We’re going more traditional sources but we still need to like have that sort of fan base so that we can get into theaters and things like that. Other films like Paranormal Activity, that’s how they were able into theaters–.  Is having that fan base there. We love that we have Star Trek actors aboard the project because that has really allowed us to tap into that fan base. We have had a lot support. People come by here and they’re like, “Wow Tim Russ is in the project! I’ve been looking forward to seeing him in something else.” So to see that kind of excitement is really reassuring and it’s great to have those people come aboard–.  Message us or ‘like’ us, and get involved in what we are doing. It’s great.

K: Yeah the community makes all the difference huh?

M: Yes, it does. It really does.

K: All right. Thank you very much!

M: Thank you!

S: Thank you very much!

zombie

Who doesn’t like zombies? If pop culture references are any indication, zombies are still on the rise (The Walking Dead, Warm Bodies, and countless youtube videos to name a few). At San Diego Comic-Con, there was a panel dedicated to looking at ‘Zombies in Pop Culture’ headed by Max Brooks (author of World War Z and Zombie Survival Guide). Brooks was joined by a good handful of authors and they discussed the origin of the present day zombie and how zombies fit into pop culture.

DSC03634

How zombies are represented has changed much over the years, but the way we think of them today can be attributed to George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead (1968). The film was originally titled Night of the Flesh Eaters, but was changed last minute, and due to the lack of that little copyright symbol, the film became public domain. Thus whomever wanted to make a film with zombies could because they were not trademarked.

Now with films like World War Z (the zombies are not fast in the book), there are super powered zombies! Brooks mentioned how he was asked if he would write a survival guide for fast zombies and he said, “Yeah, it would be a [thin] pamphlet that says kiss your ass goodbye!”. When zombies can run like normal humans, it seems a little off. They are dead thus their bodies should not move the way they would if they were alive. Something about zombies being so inhuman is what makes them disturbing. The panel mentioned how the more human the zombies are, the less scary they seem because you could possibly reason with them (or at least think you can). The way zombies will just kill anything makes your death less special and, in turn, makes you unimportant. That realization is what makes them terrifying.

However, regardless of how crazy the zombies are, zombie movies/shows/games should have at least taught us it is really other people that you have to worry about. The drama amongst people is one of the main draws of the zombie story line. Steven Schlozman, M.D. mentioned how, “The zombies aren’t the danger, it’s us”. Schlozman M.D. also agreed that we can learn from zombie pop cultured “what NOT to do”.

 DSC03635

The panel as a whole believed zombies were here to stay, maybe they might drop back into the shadows a little but they will not disappear. Overall, it was a humorous discussion about societies fascination with these undead creatures and the pseudo-post apocalyptic world they inhabit.

IMAG3802editI was able to get a photo with Max Brooks after panel!  I happened to be cosplaying Supergirl that day ^_^

BTW, that is me as a zombie up at the top 😉

Gonna be in San Diego this weekend? Yes, the behemoth that is Comic-Con will be going on (and on and on), but there is another con that you may not have heard about, Gam3r Con (Wednesday-Sunday) will be running at the same time; Gam3r Con is located at the 10th Ave Theater and is a multi-story playhouse dedicated to games, theatre, and more!

There are different rooms designated for different types of gaming: tabletop, old school (Retrocade), and console. It feels like you went over to your friend’s house and all of your buddies are there. There is a little something for everyone. They also have game inspired art throughout the building and even hosted a painting party Wednesday evening.

Be sure to check out the live entertainment: Gam3rs: The Play, I Wish My Life Was an RPG, and War Games. There will also be some films and stand up comedy!

Gam3rs: The Play recently had a one night engagement in a sold out theater in North Hollywood. They even had to add extra chairs! The audience loved the performance by Brian Bielawski and really connected to the material. One fun moment I remember during the show was when Geekscape’s own Jonathan London approvingly nodded along to a specific Farscape reference. However, one can still enjoy the show without knowing what it is like to play a MMORPG (massive multi-player online role playing game), or not following every nerd shout out. The main character, Steve, is just your average guy trying to survive a soul crushingly boring job, deal with an over bearing boss/bothersome coworker and remember his girlfriend’s birthday. You can still catch this hilarious one man show Saturday at 10pm and Sunday at 2:30pm.

These are just some of the many awesome things you will discover at Gam3r Con. So be sure to check it out!

Available and near North Hollywood this Wednesday (6/26)? Good. Here’s something for you to see: a special performance of Gam3rs!

Gam3rs a hilarious one man show about a guy stuck at his call center job, while he tries to lead an epic raid and is constantly interrupted by his coworker, boss and girlfriend; each conveyed entirely by his reactions (it is a one man show after all). Gam3rs is packed to capacity with nerd and geek pop culture references so everyone (especially readers of Geekscape) can relate to some part of it. Also, the show is still very amusing, even if you have never played a role playing game: we’ve all had that boss, that phone call with mom, or that conversation with a significant other that made the day that much more frustrating.

This performance will be put on by Brian Bielawski, the creator of the play, and it will be “shown to a limited number of guests to help raise funds for GAM3RS the Web Series! Please join us for this magical evening of wine, raffles, and lots of laughter. Our focus will be on the actor, as the majority of the set will already be in San Diego for the Fringe.”

Most of us have been at a party where a game involved watching the TV (Guitar Hero and pretty much any other console game). Sure, gaming is a group activity, but you tend to get sucked in and not notice those around you. Well, Lau Korsgaard has developed a new party game that changes all that. Korsgaard explained it by saying, “Party games are killing the parties, you just stare at the TV”, but this game makes you look at each other. Spin the Bottle: Bumpie’s Party is a super cute game that makes you get active and pushes you to your comfort limit. It reminds us how we need to just have fun and not hold ourselves back.

Here is a pic from their area at the Indiecade booth inside South Hall at E3.

This Wii U game has seventeen mini games that “encourage moving around and being silly” (Korsgaard). See the pictures below to get a sense of what you have to do in the games. You can play with 2-8 players and only need Wii remotes. The game will release in July on the Wii U e-shop as a digital download.

I went back more than once to play with friends while at E3 and had a lot of fun playing! Also, we were all laughing pretty much the whole time. It is entertaining and helps you break out of your shell. This is the perfect game for parties and as an ice breaker!

logoBe sure to watch the teaser trailer to get a look at the adorable and goofy animation!

Fans of the beloved original NES (Nintendo Entertainment System)/Game Boy 8-bit DuckTales game will be in for treat with DuckTales: Remastered. It will be like the original but with a “face lift” and an expanded ending sequence. The developers have set out to have retain the authenticity of the original.

The game will contain the five original levels, plus a tutorial. The animation looks amazing and rightfully so, because it is all hand drawn! Many of the show’s original voices were used, and the rest are all official Disney voice over artists. WayForward Technologies (the developers of the game) found episodes of the DuckTales TV show that lined up with the game and incorporated them. The soundtrack has been remastered and they created original 8-bit songs for the new sections so that there is a consistent style of music/sound throughout the game play.

DuckTales: Remastered will be available this Summer for $14.99 on the Playstation Network, Xbox 360, Wii U and Steam.

I’ve never played the original game, but my love of the show drew me to this booth at E3. They even had a sound box where you could sing along to the theme song for a cool DuckTales: Remastered pin. Of course I could not resist singing along! I also enjoyed playing this game; mainly because it felt like I was watching the show, and was able to interact with it. I will most likely be getting this come this Summer!

Watch the trailer for DuckTales: Remastered Below, and let us know what you thinK!
