Not only has The Hollywood Reporter learned who Marvel Studios desires to direct the highly-anticipated Guardians Of The Galaxy, but they have also found out some other names that they are considering for the film just in case their top choice doesn’t quite work out. It appears that James Gunn (Super) has beat out Peyton Reed, and the directing team of Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden as Marvel Studios top choice to direct the upcoming “space-epic” Guardians Of The Galaxy.

After a lengthy search, sources say that Marvel executives now are talking exclusively with Gunn, whose previous credits include the genre films Slither and Super. The studio is said not to have ruled out others in the running —  Peyton Reed (Bring It On, Yes Man) and Half Nelson helming team Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden were in the mix, according to sources — in case talks with Gunn’s reps do not lead to a deal.

It is also being said that James Gunn was chosen for his “sensibility and his ability to mix comedy elements with action and horror” which is something that he definitely shares with fellow director Joss Whedon. And we all know how well that one turned out. But if you’re unfamiliar with the director his credits include Dawn Of The Dead, Tromeo & Juliet, Slither, and Super.  Back in February of last year, James Gunn had expressed an interest in directing a superhero film involving superheroes that aren’t as he stated “the most popular in the world” and that he wanted to work on something with a bigger budget. Gunn even went on to reveal that he had been discussing a project with Marvel Studios. So, this definitely would fit what Gunn was looking to do. With a recent plot surfacing online you should probably expect some form of official announcement coming up soon. So, what do you think of this one? As usual sound of with your thoughts in the box below.

So, besides the line-up and the release date there isn’t too much known so far about the upcoming “space epic” that is Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy. But it appears that a summary of the movie’s plot has made its way online. It’s On The Grid is reporting that the film will be about:

“A U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.”

So, with a pretty legit site like It’s On the Grind reporting this it could just be true. Of course we will have to wait until we get some confirmation from Marvel on it. The U.S. pilot could be referring to Peter Quill aka Star-Lord or possible even Vance Astro aka Major Victory if they’re including him in the film as well. Personally I am leaning towards it being Star-Lord being that he’s already been announced and I don’t think Marvel will be cramming the team with TOO many characters. But like I said…we will just have to wait and see on this one.

So far Fury’s files have shown him to be keeping tabs on Ant-Man, Nova, Wiccan & Loki and Cable. The final teaser reveals he will also be keeping tabs on a fan-favorite…Star-Lord! This most likely will be an introduction to Bendis’ new Guardians Of The Galaxy series.

Saturday is the big day for Hall H every year. It’s the day when the big guns come out and if you missed Hall H this year…you missed out on the best Hall H in years.

So, the panel started with Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’ and the 8 minutes of footage was just as good as what we had already seen. Following that we got to check out footage from ‘End Of Watch’ and ‘Silent Hill: Revelations’ which both looked great.

So let’s get into what you all want to know.

Legendary and Warner Bros. brought it. If you’re read the trending “#holyshit” in regards to ‘Pacific Rim’ that is honestly the best way to describe it. The footage looked amazing and unless someone bootlegged it you will not see this footage any time soon. They are going silent on it but when you do see it…be prepared to be amazed.

Following this we got a teaser trailer that made about 6,000 people lose their shit as soon as they heard that trademark Godzilla scream. The teaser was great and the fact that they will be taking a realistic approach to the movie make it seem like this one is going to be fantastic.

‘Man Of Steel’. What can I say about this? It brought fans to tears. This movie is Superman’s version of ‘Batman Begins’. I don’t even like Superman and I got choked up watching this. There were actually quite a few fans that went up to ask questions with tears of joy in their eyes. It looks phenomenal and Cavill looks perfect as Superman/Clark Kent. I don’t believe you will see the full footage that we saw but I can now confirm you will be getting a teaser trailer attached to ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ next week. Get excited.

‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ aka the panel that had more screaming fans than any. They showed 13 minutes of footage here and if you’ve been hearing anything negative about him shooting at 48 frames per second…have no worries. The film looks beautiful and will either live up to or surpass the ring trilogy. We did not get to see Smaug but we did get treated to some great scenes including one involving Gollum and Bilbo. Ring fans…you will not be let down.

So on to the next big gun aka Marvel Studios. Let’s just say I batted 100 here with this one. We had a special appearance by Edgar Wright where he showed us the ‘Ant-Man’ test footage and it looked so fucking good. The suit was definitely a mix between Pym and Eric O’Grady’s and will translate really well.

Following that we got two title announcements. ‘Thor: The Dark World’ and ‘Captain America: The Winter Solider’. You read that right fans…lose your fucking mind because we will see what you wanted since day one.

Remember when I told you that Guardians Of The Galaxy are coming to the big screen? Guess what…they are. We were shown some concept art that you see above and given our first look at the team that consists of Rocket Raccoon, Star-Lord, Drax, Groot and Gamora.

Marvel then brought out the cast and director of ‘Iron Man 3’ who brought with them some footage of  a few scenes including a teaser trailer that is going to make Marvel fans lose their fucking minds. We got a first look at Tony trying out his new suit with the extremis tech. The biggest “holy fucking shit” moment of the teaser? Let’s just say the crowd went wild seeing a certain Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin. And yes…he had the rings on.

Check back tomorrow because I may do a more detailed podcast where I can get more into it.

So, I was reading an article on LA Times Hero Complex and came to a section where they brought up something really interesting.

Why would Whedon sign up for that? He might not. But it’s intriguing to note that Whedon made the big push to put Thanos in “Avengers” and that Warlock was one of the reasons: ”For me, the greatest Avengers was ‘The Avengers’ annual that Jim Starlin did followed by the Thing ‘Two-in-One‘ that contained the death of Adam Warlock,” Whedon told Slash Film. “Those were some of the most important texts and, I think, underrated milestones in Marvel history.”

With him having set the gears for the movie in motion could it be entirely out of the question for Marvel to pursue him to direct? Especially due to it wouldn’t be entirely new territory for him being that one of Whedon’s best known works is Firefly. Attaching his name and the Marvel studios logo would definitely fill seats. Could Whedon be the perfect choice for this film? We will have to wait and find out during the Marvel Studios panel at Comic-Con Saturday in Hall H.

Earlier today the internet exploded with excitement (trust me…check Twitter) when it hit that Marvel Studios would be announcing ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ at their San Diego Comic-Con panel.

Well now it seems that Variety has confirmed this report and even announced that the release date would be set at May 16, 2014. It’s also being reported that Nicole Perlman (who previously worked on ‘Thor’) has already written two drafts for the film and Marvel is very happy with her work. Marvel has not officially commented yet.

With a new ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ series as well as a new ‘Nova’ series on the way as well as Guardians appearing in a recent episode of ‘Avengers: Earths Mightiest Heroes’ and Nova having a recurring role in ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’…this announcement comes at no shock to me. But definitely has me excited more than some of the previously rumored movies that we would be seeing next. We better see some Star-Lord though or I fear Scott Alminiana may stab someone.

It’s not a suprise. After the news of Marvel filling trademarks for ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ it was obvious it was coming. But according to Latino Review (who has been pretty reliable about Marvel Studios news)…it’s coming a lot sooner than we thought. Kevin Fiege has been talking some time now about doing a space epic and now it’s coming.

For those unfamiliar with ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’, the comic first appeared in 1969 and was resurrected in 2008. The story centers on a group of alien beings in the 31st century who are each the last of their kind. They eventually travel back in time and interact with 20th century Marvel characters which would most likely be how the movie would end and tie into ‘The Avengers 2’.

It’s reported that we will get an official announcement at the Marvel Studios panel during San Diego Comic-Con in two weeks. We are also told to expect Nova and that the script is “incredible” and will lead up to ‘The Avengers 2’ in 2015. Oh and is Thanos in it? Yes. Yes he is.

Not that we didn’t know it was coming already but now we have times for the Marvel Studios and Walk Disney Studios panels at SDCC 2012. Marvel will most likely be presenting footage from ‘Iron Man 3’ as well as giving updates such as casting on ‘Thor 2’, ‘Captain America 2’ and a sequel to ‘The Avengers’. We should also expect information about their other projects which are currently rumored to be ‘Ant-Man‘, ‘The Black Panther’ and ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy‘.

Marvel Studios: Saturday, July 14th 6:00pm – 7:00pm (Hall H) – Marvel Studios presents Iron Man 3. Join Producer Kevin Feige and special guests as they provide an inside look at the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures: Thursday, July 12th 2:05pm – 3:05pm (Hall H) – A Q&A panel featuring the imaginative director of Frankenweenie, Tim Burton; A special look at the world of Oz The Great and Powerful with director Sam Raimi; the illustrious voice cast of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Wreck-It Ralph, including John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman and director Rich Moore.

Post-AvX we know Marvel will be returning to their cosmic titles and it seems we may be getting more than just one. It’s already been all but officially announced that Bendis will be launching a new ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ title. And according to our friends at Bleeding Cool we will also be getting a new ‘Nova’ series to join that.

The book will most likely focus on the new Nova…Sam Alexander (Sorry Richard Rider fans). The series is said to have Ed McGuiness drawing. And while we could see writing there is also possibility that it could be Jeph Loeb.  But neither writers have been actually attached and this is just speculation and we could get an entirely different writer.

Following the story on ‘Ant-Man’ we have another interesting piece of information regarding another Marvel franchise rumored to be hitting the big screen.

“Marvel Comics have just filed eleven new trademark applications for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY covering everything from jewelery to beverages to furniture to cosmetics. The applications cover International Classes 3, 14, 16, 20, 24, 29, 30, 32, 35, 41, 42, and also include computer games, fabrics, foods, paper goods, entertainment and internet services, and even retail store services.”

While it could be entirely possible that this is due to the new ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ series that Bendis will be doing post-‘AvX’ it would seem more likely that this is due to the planned movie adaptation. With the success of ‘The Avengers’ its highly likely that Marvel/Disney could be pushing forward with more than two projects a year now. With rumors around about ‘Ant-Man’ and ‘The Black Panther’ movie moving forward…why not this? While the movie is probably years away we could possibly even get some news in two weeks at San Diego Comic-Con. But at this point all we have is rumors and speculation to go off of. I am going to say that I better get some damn Rocket Raccoon in this movie!

For months we’ve been hearing about all the changes in creative teams post-AvX. The main one that Bendis would be leaving all ‘Avengers’ titles.

Well, Bleeding Cool is posting some interesting rumors floating around the ol’ water cooler.

-Rick Remender and Jeremy Opena on an Avengers book? New Avengers maybe?

-Mark Waid takes over Avengers Assemble?

-Jonathan Hickman and Essad Ribic on either Uncanny X-Men or the Avengers books that’s not the one Remender and Opena are on?

– Kieron Gillen and Greg Land on Iron Man.

– Matt Fraction and Salvador Larocca are sticking together… wherever they end up.

– Only the very best artists for a Brian Bendis cosmic relaunch…(Guardians Of The Galaxy…duh)

It also appears that Matt Fraction and Salvador Larocca may just be taking over Fantastic Four and Hickman and Esad Ribic will replace Bendis on Avengers post-AvX.
