Today would have been Jack Kirby’s 98th birthday. If you aren’t familiar with his career, I assure you that he is referred to as the King of Comics for good reason. His mind and drawings have been responsible for some of the most iconic characters in comic book history. Properties such as The Fantastic Four, Captain America, Thor, X-Men, The Avengers, and many more have since transcended the paper medium and made their way to the big screen. With their success has brought an opportunity for lesser-known comic book properties to be developed for television and movie theatre screens and yes, as you might have guessed, Kirby is responsible for many of them too.

Let’s take a look at some characters you might not have known Jack drew:

Groot

TTA-13
Tales to Astonish #13 (1959)

Before he was a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy he was The Monster from Planet X! He also said more than just “I am Groot.” He didn’t become a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy until the 2008 comic book series.

Ant-Man

TTA-35
Tales to Astonish #35 (1959)

While many didn’t know of Ant-Man until this summer’s movie, Kirby drew Hank Pym in his Ant-Man costume back in 1959.

Doctor Doom

FF-5
Fantastic Four #5 (1962)

Ok, for some of you this may be obvious, but The Fantastic Four had another movie out this Summer so he gets a spot on the list. That and he’s one of the greatest villains in comics!

Black Panther

FF-52
Fantastic Four #52 (1966)

Marvel broke the colour barrier in comics when they introduced their first black superhero, Black Panther! He is king of the great nation of Wakanda, a brilliant scientist, and a warrior of great skill. Marvel has confirmed that the Black Panther will be part of their Phase Three slate of films.

Baron Strucker

SF-5
Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos #5 (1964)

Baron Strucker made his first appearance on the big screen played by Thomas Kretschmann in 2014 during the mid-credits scene of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Kirby first drew him in 1964.

Bucky

CA-001
Captain America #1 (1941)

As we roll into Captain America: Civil War, Bucky’s (well, the Winter Solder’s) role will continue to grow. Kirby created the character back in 1941!

Peggy Carter

TOS-77
Tales of Suspense #77 (1966)

Peggy Carter first appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger. The character then gained much more popularity when she got her own show, Agent Carter. Kirby sketched her first adventure with Captain America in the 77th issues of Tales of Suspense.

Red Skull

CA-07
Captain America #7 (1941)

Another character who appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger. This iconic villain first sketched by The King in Captain America #7.

Arnim Zola

CA-208
Captain America #208 (1977)

We saw this villain adapted for film in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Arnim Zola was one of Kirby’s last contributions to the Captain America mythos.

Baron Zemo

A-7
Avengers #6 (1964)

Alright, some of you might not have heard of this character yet but you will when Daniel Brühl portrays him in Captain America: Civil War.

So, what are your favorite Kirby comics and characters? Let us know in the comments below!

Well, I don’t think CD Projekt could ask for a much better performance out of their latest release, ‘The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’. The company announced they have sold over six million copies since the game’s release six weeks ago.

Other numbers that show how much butt CD Projekt is kicking include:

– Sales are up nearly 600% compared to last year ($139.5 million compared to 20.3 million last year)
– One million PC copies were activated on their digital distribution platform, GoG
– Profits are up more than 4,800% ($64.3 million compared to 1.3 million)

Are you one of the 6 million who have purchased The Witcher 3? Are you loving it? Let us know in the comments below!

Alfre Woodard (State Of Affairs, The Last Ship) is finalizing a deal that will have her star opposite Mike Colter in Marvel’s upcoming Netflix series ‘Luke Cage’.

alfre woodard

Woodard’s character is listed on the breakdown as Minetta who will be a powerful woman in local politics and have an impact on Luke Cage’s life. There is strong speculation that she will playing a version of the villain Black Mariah, a nemesis of both Luke Cage and Iron Fist in the comics. Black Mariah first appeared in Luke Cage, Hero for Hire #5 in 1973 and is the leader of a gang of New York criminals called the Rat Pack.

It’s official, Oscar nominated-actor Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) will play the villainous Baron Mordo in Marvel Studio’s upcoming Doctor Strange film. Baron Mordo was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko and first appeared in Strange Tales #111. Mordo is a fellow apprentice of the Ancient One but betrays him and Doctor Strange.

The Scott Derrickson directed film also stars Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role.

It might be a little early to get excited for this movie but I think it’s going to have a completely different vibe from all the other Marvel Studio movies when it opens in theatres November 4, 2016.

As I sat down with my coffee and the trade of Grayson Vol. 1: Agents of Spyral I planned to read a couple issues and then go onto something else. That wasn’t quite what happened. I read the first issue then decided I would read the second, then the third… next thing I knew I was through all seven of them.

Dick Grayson, who is no longer Robin, Nightwing or even believed to be living anymore is recruited to become an agent for the shady organization called Spyral. However, it is clear by the end of the first issue that he is a double agent for Batman. The first issue also provides a great summary of Grayson’s history that both old and new fans of the character will appreciate. It serves to immediately connect readers with Grayson. If you aren’t one of the many fans who already love him, after reading a few issues of this you probably will be as Seeley and King do a great job of creating a character that is easy to admire and cheer for. Grayson is fun, positive and possesses a great sense of humor. However there are still plenty of moments where we see him struggling with decisions that he is forced to make on the job.

The book itself could be described in much the same way as Grayson; it’s fun and never takes itself too seriously. It is an easy book to read but still provides deep moral questions and concepts to study and discuss if you wanted to. With each issue the series seems to pick up steam. Seeley and King always seems to leave just enough unanswered questions in each issue to make you want to jump into the next one.

Janin’s provides great art throughout each issue. From the beginning he does an awesome job showing off Grayson’s acrobatic ability and finesse. During the books more powerful moments his art and ability to capture the character’s emotion on the page makes the moments all the more powerful. From the headquarters of Spyral to many different outdoors and cityscapes, the settings and the backgrounds are always gorgeous.

The only complaint I’d have about this trade is that it doesn’t end on much of a cliffhanger. Each issue left me wanting more except for the last one but maybe I was just getting tired of reading?

If you’re looking for something new to read be sure to checkout Grayson Vol. 1: Agents of Spyral when it hits shelves June 9th or pick up a few single issues now!

The CW has released a trailer for their The Flash/Arrow spinoff, Legends of Tomorrow.

The trailer introduces (and reintroduces) a long list of characters: Hawkgirl (Ciara Renee), White Canary (Caity Lotz), the Atom (Brandon Routh), Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller), Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell), and Professor Martin Stein (one-half of Firestorm)! Arthur Darvill, of Doctor Who fame, stars as the time-traveling Rip Hunter. Arrow and the Flash make an appearance as well.

The trailer confirms that the villain in the show will be none other than the immortal Vandal Savage.

Here’s the show’s official synopsis:

When heroes alone are not enough… the world needs legends. Having seen the future, one he will desperately try to prevent from happening, time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter is tasked with assembling a disparate group of both heroes and villains to confront an unstoppable threat — one in which not only is the planet at stake, but all of time itself. Can this ragtag team defeat an immortal threat unlike anything they have ever known? DC’S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW stars Victor Garber (“The Flash,” “Alias”); Brandon Routh (“Arrow,” “Superman Returns”); Arthur Darvill (“Doctor Who”); Caity Lotz (“Arrow”); Ciarra Renee (“Pippin”); Franz Drameh (“Edge of Tomorrow”); with Dominic Purcell (“The Flash,” “Prison Break”); and Wentworth Miller (“The Flash,” “Prison Break”). Television, with executive producers Greg Berlanti (“Arrow,” “The Flash,” upcoming “Pan”), Marc Guggenheim (“Arrow,” “Eli Stone,” “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters”), Andrew Kreisberg (“Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Eli Stone,” “Warehouse 13”) and Sarah Schechter (“Arrow,” “The Flash,” upcoming “Pan”).

The first season of Legends of Tomorrow will be 13 episodes long and is set to debut as a part of The CW’s midseason lineup.

Is this being added to your ever growing list of “must watch” television? Let us know in the comments below!

A small casting announcement today as Marvel has revealed Paul Rudd will make his first appearance alongside the Avengers as Scott Lang/Ant-Man in Captain America: Civil War. We’ll have to wait to see whether Rudd ends up making more than just a cameo in the film but we should have a pretty good idea how big his role in it will be after we see Ant-Man.

Captain America: Civil War is going to be loaded with superheroes from the Marvel universe. The cast so far looks something like this:

Captain America – Chris Evans
Iron Man – Robert Downey Jr
The Falcon – Anthony Mackie
Black Widow – Scarlett Johansson
War Machine – Don Cheadle
The Vision – Paul Bettany
The Winter Soldier – Sebastien Stan
Agent 13 – Emily VanCamp
Black Panther – Chadwick Boseman
General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross – William Hurt
Crossbones – Frank Grillo
Everett K Ross? – Martin Freeman

As well as Daniel Brühl casted to play the iconic Captain America villain Baron Zemo.

Right now this looks more like another Avengers movie than a Captain America but hey, no harm in that.

Ant-Man comes out later this summer (July 17) and Captain America: Civil War is set for release on May 6, 2016.

To celebrate the Joker’s 75th birthday, Suicide Squad director David Ayer tweeted the first official image of Oscar winning actor Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) as the character.

Leto has short bright green hair, silver on his teeth, a bunch of creepy tattoos and the character’s iconic use of purple is present in the form of a glove on his right hand.

The pose itself references a panel from Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s one-shot graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke. This is the second time Ayer has referenced the story when posting an image of Leto. I think this is more about Ayer wanting to use iconic Joker imagery than it is an insight into the type of character we’ll be seeing on the big screen.

I doubt the Joker will look like this throughout the entire film but the picture does prove that Ayer will be taking the character in a different direction than previous live-action appearances.

Suicide Squad will star Jared Leto as The Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Jay Hernandez most likely as El Diablo, and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress. Viola Davis will play Amanda Waller. The film is set to be released August 5, 2016.

What do you think of Jared Leto as the Joker? Let us know in the comments below!

Sony has narrowed down their choices for the role of Peter Parker in the next live-action Spider-Man movie and is expected to make test offers in the coming weeks. The actors left to contend for the role include Nat Wolff (Paper Towns), Asa Butterfield (Hugo), Tom Holland (The Impossible), Timothee Chalamet (Homeland, Interstellar) and Liam James (The Way, Way Back), among others.

The new Spider-Man is expected to have a cameo in Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War but the character won’t be needed on set until June.

Sony and Marvel had no comment regarding the shortlist.

I’m leaning towards wanting Holland or Chalamet. Who are you guys cheering for? Let us know in the comments below?

Spider-Man will be spinning webs all over the big screen for the next few years!

Studio head Tom Rothman announced at CinemaCon on Wednesday that Sony plans to release a Spider-Man animated feature film. It will be written and produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs). No director has been named yet.

The press release states that “the film will exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe, all of which are continuing.”

Currently live-action Spider-Man is set to appear in Captain America: Civil War in May 2016 and in a reboot film slated for July 28, 2017.

The animated film is set to release July 20, 2018 sandwiched between an untitled Fox Marvel film scheduled the week before and an untitled DC film scheduled the week after.

So far most of Spider-Man’s animated adventures have been great and with Lord and Miller involved there is no reason to believe that this won’t be awesome! … Is there? Let us know in the comments below.

Last month Valiant Entertainment announced a nine-figure investment for movie and television development. Today they are announcing a five picture deal with Sony Pictures that will bring the Valiant Universe to the big screen.

Bloodshot and Harbinger will each get two movies before the fifth movie, Harbinger Wars, brings the characters together. Harbinger Wars will be inspired by the Valiant’s 2013 miniseries of the same name where Bloodshot, a nanite-enchanced soldier, clashes with Harbinger and his gang of super-powered (think X-Men) runaways.

Bloodshot will be directed by John Wick’s David Leitch and Chad Stahelski while director considerations for Harbinger are being kept under wraps for now. All five movies will be produced by Valiant’s Dinesh Shamdasani, along with Original Film’s Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe (The Fast and Furious franchise, 21 Jump Street).

Other Valiant properties in development include the action comedy Archer & Armstrong and the supernatural thriller Shadowman.

Bloodshot is set to hit theatres in 2017. Are you excited for more comic book movie crossovers? Let us know in the comments below!

Amongst those photographed are Cara Develigne as Enchantress, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, and Will Smith as Deadshot.

Uh. Guys, where’s Jared Leto?

The villain heavy film is based on the DC comic about a team of imprisoned super-villains who perform dangerous missions for the U.S. Government in exchange for lessened sentences. Suicide Squad is set for a Summer 2016 release!

Could we ask for a better science fiction crossover!? This July Green Lantern will meet Star Trek in a six-part comic book crossover event! Star Trek/Green Lantern: The Spectrum War. The monthly mini-series will be written by veteran Star Trek comic writer Mike Johnson with art by Angel Hernandez (Infinite Crisis: Fight for the Multiverse, Arrow).

In a press release IDW President and COO states Greg Goldstein “We’ve looked forward to bringing these two iconic universes together for a long time, Star Trek and Green Lantern both share so many of the same science-fiction adventure themes and ideals, that a galaxy-spanning crossover like this is simply… logical.”

Star Trek/Green Lantern: The Spectrum War #1 will be available in stores and online in July and have covers from Gabriel Rodriguez, Francesco Francavilla, Elsa Charretier, and Garry Brown.

Are you as stoked as we are? Let us in know in the comments below.

Growing up my best friend and I use to play Iron Man and X-O Manowar in Heavy Metal on the Sega Saturn. I’ll be honest, I had no idea who this X-O Manowar guy was. I always wanted to play as Iron Man. Not that it mattered much, we would always become frustrated and never get farther than the first few levels. That was my first little taste of the Valiant Universe. Lemire (Green Arrow, Animal Man), Kindt (RAI, UNITY, Mind MGMT), and Rivera’s (Daredevil) The Valiant is my second. It was much more enjoyable.

The four part mini series is self contained so readers can pick it up and not be intimidated by continuity. I can think of no better marketing tool than this series to grow Valiant’s readership. It’s that good.

The premise is pretty straightforward. Since basically the beginning of time the Eternal Warrior has protected the Geomancers who are mystics that speak for the Earth. No matter how hard the Eternal Warrior tries the Immortal Enemy defeats him and kills the Geomancer plunging humanity into a dark age. The cycle continues a few times throughout the ages but this time the Eternal Warrior will have help from the Valiant super heroes.

Jeff Lemire and Matt Kindt’s writing is solid for most of the series. It’s paced great so you’ll definitely want to have all four issues on hand when you begin reading this one. The duo really shines during the moments that the two contrasting characters Kay (the geomancer) and Bloodshot (nanite-infused super soldier) are together. This is where you’ll find some of the series’ best moments. The only problem I had was the use of time travel in the beginning of the fourth issue brought the action and emotional climax to an abrupt halt. What came next more than made up for that though.

The end of this series will drastically shift the face of The Valiant universe. Like I said, I have no prior knowledge of it but even to me the events felt significant. This surely has something to do with how well each character is established in the beginning of the series. Each hero getting their own little defining moments and story lines. By the time the final issue rolled around I was connected to each of them.

The strongest part of this mini series is the handling of the villain; the Immortal Enemy. This may be one of the most sadistic and maniacal villains I’ve ever seen. As his name suggests, he is immortal. He shifts his appearance into what his opponent fears most; for our Geomancer it is the tuxedo and top hat wearing Mister Flay from a story her father use to read her, The Littlest Princess and the Twilight Kingdom. Perhaps the scariest imagery is when his face splits opens revealing the face of a demon-like creature inside. Paolo Rivera’s drawings create a villain that is sure to haunt you long after you finish the series.

IMG_0115
(Please don’t invade my dreams.)

Rivera does a great job with the art in the rest of the book as well. There are many instances where he is able to perfectly capture the emotion of a character with little to no words from Lemire and Kindt. From peaceful communities on the riverside, to giant action pieces Rivera masterfully handles it all. There is no other way to put it; this series is gorgeous.

This miniseries is great and definitely worth checking out. I won’t be surprised to see it on a few best of lists at the end of the year. Whether you’re looking to dive into the Valiant Universe for the first time or just for a great miniseries that you can read in an hour or two I’d highly recommend checking out The Valiant. The fourth and final issue hit shelves yesterday!

THE-VALIANT_004_COVER_RIVERA1

The Predator comes to Riverdale in the latest reinvention of the Archie Comics franchise. The first issue of Archie vs. Predator (AVP) is, for better or worse, exactly what you should expect.

Alex de Campi’s writing fits right into the Archie universe. The teenagers’ dialogue and behaviour feels spot on. She does a wonderful job of giving each character their own distinct charm and sense of humour. The issue is fun, and even downright silly at times. There were actually parts in this book that made me giggle out loud… yeah, I said giggle. When things start getting sketchy, Archie and crew behave like any teenagers would in a typical slasher movie, illogically. It feels alright for the most part, but there were a couple of instances where their reaction (or lack of one) are hard to accept. It’ll be interesting to see how the characters change when they become aware that they are being hunted by something that isn’t human.

Archie veteran Fernando Ruiz’s art shines throughout the entire issue. He does an excellent job of integrating the Predator into the Archie Universe. Making the Predator a cartoon does take away from its lethalness but you are quickly reminded of how vicious of a hunter the Predator can be. Ruiz’s ability to integrate violence into a universe that is not known for it will sure to be one of the high points of the series.

The first issue is much more Archie than it is Predator, so readers who were surprised by how much they enjoyed Afterlife with Archie might not have the same reaction to this. I felt Afterlife with Archie was able to open itself up a larger audience as it was a horror story that just happened to have the characters from Archie in it. So far this series feels like an Archie story that just happens to have the Predator in it. I fear this may alienate (no pun intended) readers; Archie fans will not enjoy it like they would the normal books and Predator fans won’t enjoy it because it’s too much Archie. However, there is a lot of fun to be had if you’re like me and just have a casual interest in both franchises.

What you see is what you get so far with AVP. If you hear Archie vs. Predator and think that it sounds fun, you’ll probably enjoy it. If it turns you off, this book probably isn’t for you. While I’m not clamouring for the second issue I am excited to see where the story goes. This could be the beginning of a very entertaining miniseries.

Archie vs. Predator #1 is on sale April 15th. Will it be on your pull list? Let us know in the comments below!

When questioned about the appearance of deceased characters appearing on the covers Bendis replied “you’ll have to read to find out.”

Bendis also noted that Ultimate End isn’t your traditional tie in:

“These are not tie-ins in the traditional sense of the word. These are very important pieces of the Marvel Universe. The tie-ins are events unto themselves. This would be its own event if there was no Secret Wars. Everything I’m involved with feels that way. What comes out the other side of the event will be different, and these sets that up.”

They also revealed David Marquez’s cover of Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man #12

It’ll change your life. Eric Canete (The End League, Iron Man: Enter the Mandarin), Jon Tsuei (Comic Book Tattoo), Leonardo Olea, Manu Fernandez
The story follows a wanted woman in hiding named Rain Oshiro. The narrative style will prominently feature two very different but significantly connected moments throughout her life: “The Past”—which will explore her history as an impressionable student, an abiding soldier, and a wanted fugitive; and “The Present”—which will show her as she is now and how she copes with (and runs away from) the decisions made in her past. At its core, the story is an exploration of choices—both good and bad. And now, how her choices have formed her into the person she has and will become. Set against a background of a futuristic world as only artist Canete can imagine, Rain has just 24 hours to escape a barricaded city while trying to evade a military force determined to either capture or kill her.

STARVE is set in a world where chefs are practically royalty, and access to them is the ultimate status symbol. Since his personal life is as much a shambles as his professional career, Chef Cruikshank works to repair his relationship with his grown daughter while dismantling the monstrosity that Starve has become.

TADAIMA

Sadly, within those twelve years, both her Japanese grandparents passed away. TADAIMA is a travelogue documenting a trip back to Japan with her mother for a memorial service to renew the sobota, a wooden grave marker, at her grandparents’ tomb in Fukushima. Touching on Japanese spirituality and cultural differences, TADAIMA is more than a book about landmarks and foreign cuisine. It’s about family.

HEAVEN introduces readers to a distant future where the forces or man and alien combined have used religion to conquer this universe and are now ready, about to invade the next one — Heaven itself. The “Good War” between man and angel will span galaxies and dimensions, building to a final conflict that threatens to negate all of reality itself. Along the way many players on both sides of the war will be featured; soldiers, spies and politicians all with different goals and agendas even as their two distinct and differing realities explode around them.

The revamping continues at Archie Comics leading up to their 75th Anniversary. The flagship Archie book will relaunch next year with the brand new creative team of writer Mark Waid and artist Fiona Staples.

Recently, Waid has been receiving high praise for his work with artist Chris Samnee on Daredevil while Staples’ artwork on Brian K. Vaughan’s Saga has shared similar critical success. (Note: I probably don’t have to tell you that both these books make an AWESOME addition to your pull list).

The Archie brand has been no stranger to change the past few years with Archie’s highly publicized death in the Life With Archie series as well as the release of the darker, zombie filled Afterlife with Archie.

What books are you excited for? What do you think DC is planning for their big event? When is the last time you visited a comic book shop? Let us know in the comments below!

Walt Siminson’s long running comic book career is nothing short of illustrious. While he is best known for his run on Thor from 1983-1987 on Thor, Siminson has also worked on such properties as X-Factor, Fantastic Four, Batman, Manhunter, Star Wars, Alien, and Battlestar Galactica. The list goes on and on and on, but before all of that there was Star Slammers.

Simonsson created Star Slammers as his Rhode Island School of Design as his thesis project in 1972. It has seen various publication through the decades but perhaps none as sweet as what’s to come.

IDW Publishing has announced Star Slammers: The Complete Collection. It will collect the graphic novel and mini-series, as well as short stories, covers, and pin-ups. And, for the first time ever, this volume will print the original version of Star Slammers.

Star Slammers: The Complete Collection is set to hit shelves in February. Have you experienced Star Slammers? Planning to pick up the collection? Let us know in the comments below!

The Spider-Verse has begun and it’s massive. With so many characters and history the story could be daunting for the new or casual comic book fan. That doesn’t mean that it’s not worth diving into, as the writing by Dan Slott and art by Olivier Coipel in the Amazing Spider-Man is some of the best storytelling you’ll find on the stands. So don’t worry. I’ve written a little introductory guide  to help you along the way. For those wanting to get involved, here’s everything you to know to get started in The Spider-Verse!

The Spider-Verse takes places in a number of different dimensions collectively known as the Marvel Multiverse, like the Ultimate Marvel Universe or the 2099 Marvel Universe from the late 90s. Most of these dimensions have their own Spider hero, or “Spider-Totem.” A totem is essentially just a being that bridges man and beast, but we’re focusing now on the Spider-Totems that generally manifest themselves as that Universe’s equivalent of Spider-Man. Now, each Spider-Totem is being hunted and killed across the Multiverse by a superhuman group of quasi-vampires known as The Inheritors.

The Inheritors are a clan from Earth-000 that feed on the life force of Totems. At the beginning of the storyline, they’ve enslaved the spider deity The Master Weaver and are using his power to travel between dimensions and hunt down all of the Spiders, in order to satiate their hunger.

The core Marvel 616 universe’s Spider-Man (the one we all know and love) has encountered and defeated one of The Inheritors, Morlun, on two previous occasions. The first time came after Spider-Man met Ezekiel, a mysterious man who shared similar spider-powers and revealed the history of the Totems. This was during J. Michael Straczynski and John Romita Jr.’s awesome run on Amazing Spider-Man back in 2001. If you want to read up on it, seek out the Coming Home trade paperback.

morlun

In Coming Home, Ezekiel explained that Peter’s powers were no accident and that the spider wanted to pass on its abilities before death and in doing so made Peter the totem for 616. Ezekiel warned Peter that as a totem beings would seek to destroy him. Shortly after this, Morlun began stalking and tormenting Peter’s spider-sense. When Morlun ultimately chose to reveal himself he hit Spider-Man with the hardest punch he had ever felt. After making physical contact, Morlun acquired Spider-Man’s scent and would always be able to find him. Spider-Man eventually defeated Morlun by injecting himself with radiation and because Morlun couldn’t absorb it, he began to disintegrate. It wasn’t Spider-Man but Morlun’s own minion who finally shot him in the head.

coming-home
You should definitely seek this one out.

In their second encounter Peter was already suffering from a mysterious, terminal condition. Their battle resulted in him having his eye ripped out and being nearly beaten to death. Peter’s face was unidentifiable when he was taken to the hospital.  Morlun pursues him there in order to finish him feed but instead the a primal, animalistic force known as “The Other” takes over Peter and transforms him into a spider-like creature that attacks and kills Morlun for good.

Alright. You’re caught up. So enough with the history lesson and time for The Spider-Verse. Now, who exactly are the major players?

The Superior Spider-Man (aka Otto Octavius in Peter’s body) – The 616 Universe

superior-spider-man

In recent events, Otto managed to replace Peter Parker’s mind with his own. Influenced by Peter’s memories, Otto set out to become a hero, a Superior Spider-Man. Before Otto relinquished control of Peter’s mind, Otto was transported to the year 2099 and became aware that Spiders were being murdered across dimensions. He began to recruit a team to fight back. The Superior Spider-Man in Spider-Verse is the Otto Octavius from 616 during the events of his time slip into the future.

Silk – “The Bride?” – The 616 Universe

silk

In current Amazing Spider-Man continuity, Peter is trying adjust to all of the changes Otto has made to his life during his recent mind switch while balancing being a super hero. On top of this, he recently discovered that he wasn’t the only person who had been bitten by that original radioactive spider way back when! Cindy Moon inherited the same sort of powers when she was bit by the same spider as Peter. Ezekiel secretly took Cindy away and began training her but eventually placed her in a bunker to prevent Morlun from tracking her scent. She stayed there for 13 years before Peter recently came to free her. Cindy warned Peter of the danger of releasing her but that didn’t stop him. Cindy improvised her first costume out of webbing and told Peter to call her Silk. She’s new to the superhero game, and a bit of a fangirl, which isn’t helped by her uncontrollable attraction to Peter due to their shared origin.

Spider-Man 2099 – The Future 616 Universe

spider-man-2099

Elsewhere in New York, Miguel O’Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099, is stuck in the present after recently traveling back to save the life of his grandfather. Miguel has a more painful, physical reaction to other versions of himself being killed. He recently encountered Morlun, who left him with the corpse of an alternate version of himself.

Kaine – “The Other” – The 616 Universe

scarlet-spider

Another central character is Kaine, a flawed clone of Peter Parker. His mind was once unstable and his actions villainous. He later settled for a bit in Houston as The Scarlet Spider, a tribute to Ben Reilly (another clone of Peter). After dying in battle he was forced to embrace The Other in order to be reborn. Kaine eventually left Houston for Mexico and later become a member of the New Warriors. He is the current reciprocal of The Other.

So on top of all of these 616 Universe Spider-Totems, there are plenty of others from across the Multiverse that play into the events of Spider-Verse. Here’s a little more info on some of them:

Jessica Drew – The Black Widow of Earth 1610 – The Ultimate Universe

black-widow

Jessica is a clone of Peter Parker created by Doctor Octopus in the Ultimate Marvel universe.

Miles Morales – Ultimate Spider-Man of Earth 1610 – The Ultimate Universe

ultimate-spider-man

Miles was bitten by a genetically enhanced spider and eventually became Spider-Man in the Ultimate Marvel universe. In addition to spider-like powers, he also has the ability to camouflage and a stunning blast.

May “Mayday” Parker – Spider-Girl of Earth-982 – The MC2 Universe

spider-girl

In this dimension Mayday is the first child of Peter and Mary Jane Parker. Mayday began developing versions of her father’s powers when she was 15. Her parents worried about her when she first started fighting crime but eventually that worry turned to support. Daemos, another member of The Inheritors, tracked down Mayday and her family. Peter and Mary Jane sacrificed themselves so that Mayday and her baby brother Benjy could escape through a portal with other Spiders. Before leaving she vows revenge on Daemos.

Gwen Stacy – Spider-Woman of Earth-65

Edge of Spider-Verse Vol 1 2

Gwen is back! In this dimension a teenage Gwen becomes Spider-Woman after, you guessed it, being bitten by a radioactive spider.

Peter Porker – The Spectacular Spider-Ham of Earth-25

spider-ham

Spider-Ham comes from a world of talking animals. He began his life as an ordinary spider but when May Porker irradiated herself and bit Peter he turned into a super-powered pig! Spider-Ham is one of the hammier characters of the Spider-Verse.

Peter Parker – Spider-Man Noir of Earth-90214 – The Marvel Noir Universe

spider-man-noir

A Spider-Man from the great depression. He relies more on parkour movements and his pistols than he does his spider powers.

Lady May Reilly – Steampunk Lady Spider of Earth-803

steampunk-lady-spider

May was bit when trying to pet one of her father’s caged spiders. The bite gave her no superpowers but it taught her to let no one cage you. May is frustrated with her role in society in New York City, 1895 and uses her deep understanding of technology to create a 4-armed spider harness and web shooters to battle other steampunk villains.

Okay, so that should set the stage for your enjoyment of Spider-Verse! It’s not that confusing, right? Start with Amazing Spider-Man #9 and get going. You can read the tie in books like Scarlet Spiders and Spider-Woman but if you just want the core story, you’re okay sticking with just the Amazing Spider-Man title and ignoring the spin-offs (even though they are great)!

So which Spiders will live? Which ones will die? And more importantly, which characters do you want more of? Let us know in the comments and get reading!
