Halo Wars 2 is definitely one of those games that fans of the first always wanted, but not quite sure we’d get. It’s nice now that we have confirmation of the game’s existence. Worry will now be shifted to how the game will be handled. Shortly after the completion of Halo Wars, Ensemble Studios was dissolved. Certain Affinity and 343i will be handling Halo Wars 2 and the game’s story seems to be incorporating characters from the first game.

Fans will immediately recognize the name Douglas along with what appears to be the Spirit of Fire emblem on the side of the spartan’s armor. As well all know, Douglas went into cryo sleep, along with the rest of the Spirit of Fire crew that made it off the shield world. It will also be interesting to see how this game ties in with the Halo comics. Both are canon.

Halo Wars 2 is set to release next Fall.

Fans of the Crackdown franchise have been eagerly awaiting the next installment. We all have fond memories of the first two games, with the first iteration holding a special place in my heart. I’ll be honest and say the only reason why I purchased Crackdown was to get into the Halo 3 beta that was launching at the time. I know I’m not alone in this, but after waiting a couple of hours through the boot up screen, I fell in love with Crackdown.

Crackdown 3 seems to bring back everything we loved about the first two games in the franchise and pushes the limits on the Xbox One. We’ve been hearing rumblings about a fully destructible environment for some time now, it’s another thing to see it in action. It’s especially exciting to see all of this incorporated into the multiplayer modes.

There’s still not a specific release date for the game, but we do know it’s scheduled to arrive Summer 2016!

One of the many Xbox announcements this morning came in the form of a console announcement. We all knew it was coming, it was just a matter of when we’d see it.

If I’m being honest, I’m a little disappointed in the console. For years, I’ve been purchasing almost everything LE in the Halo franchise, but I’m finding that’s not the case anymore. The console might appeal to some fans, but it seems that everything Halo 5 seems to be focused on Spartan Locke, the new character introduced last year via Halo: Nightfall.

The LE Console is priced at $500 and includes a code for Halo 5‘s digital download. The console will also be available October 20th, seven days before Halo 5‘s October 27th release date.

Unfortunately, only the ‘Ultimate Edition’ will have the remastered attributes we played in the beta a couple of months ago. However, Xbox will now give codes for gamers to download every ‘Gears’ title to date. This offer also includes Gears of War Judgment, in case you missed it. Each of the titles will be Xbox 360 versions and will eventually be playable on the Xbox One via their backwards compatibility feature.

Gears_Alltitles

What’s interesting here is that the official release states that “everyone who plays Gears of War: Ultimate Edition on Xbox Live between August 25 and Dec 31st 2015″ will receive the tokens to download. Anyone who’s confused about the backwards compatibility between Xbox 360 and Xbox One owners should find clarity in this next bit of info:

Q: Will I be able to play Gears of War’s multiplayer modes, including Versus and Co-op?
All game modes, including Multiplayer, will work just as they do on Xbox 360. Additionally, you can play with people who are either playing Gears of War via backwards compatibility on Xbox One, or on Xbox 360.

Gears of War Ultimate Edition is set to release August 25, 2015.

The DCTV list of heroes keeps growing! Falk Hentschel has been cast as Hawkman and will appear primarily in Legends of Tomorrow. According to the official announcement, Hawkman will also appear in crossover episodes of The Flash and Arrow. This is a key piece of info as it is reported that Hawkman will appear in crossover episodes BEFORE Legends of Tomorrow.

FalkHentschel_hawkman

It’s possible we’ll get an origin of sorts during the crossover event. More importantly, I hope we eventually get an interaction between Hawkman and Vibe like this one:

The penultimate episode for season 2 has arrived. The episode did a good job wrapping up some lose ends while advancing towards to what seems to be a violent finale. Let’s get started!

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Ani

When we last left Ani, she had just killed a security guard, who tried choking her out, and rescued her missing person from the party. Our true detectives also secured papers that linked the mayor’s son, Osip, and members of Catalyst to the land deal Frank wanted in on. It’s also the ammo Davis needed to help bring corruption charges to city leaders.

TD 2x7 26

Needless to say, the party had a negative effect on Ani. Right off the bat, Ani confesses that she’s been waiting her entire life for man to put hands on her, giving her the excuse to kill him. This is obviously connected to what happened to her as a child, and even goes on to state, “When I ran out of the woods and they found me… ” This confused Velcoro, who was listening, and upset Ani even more once she realized she was actually talking about her experience with someone else. It’s perhaps the first time Ani has ever opened up to someone on this level and an emotional connection is established. Ani then tries to make a move on Velcoro, but he declines, stating that she’s out of his league.

The next day, Ani talks to her missing person, Emily. Emily gives some information on the pictures that kicked off the missing persons case and the search for the blue diamonds. As Emily explains it, Tasha, who was supposedly Caspere’s favorite girl to take to the parties, took pictures from the inside. She also took the pictures of the blue diamonds all in an attempt to build a portfolio to use as blackmail.

TD 2x7 x

Ultimately, Tasha ended up in the cabin we saw a couple of episodes back. In that same episode, forensics said that the blood belonged to a female, which we now know was likely Tasha. Building off this, it was Caspere’s coordinates that lead Ani and Woodrugh to the cabin, meaning that Caspere was present during the torture. Furthermore, Ani and Velcoro eventually learn that the small girl who hid while her parents were executed during the LA riots in ’92 is now in the party circuit, courtesy of Caspere.

TD 2x7 16

Woodrugh eventually informs Ani that she’s wanted for questioning in the death of the security guard she killed at the party. The situation she’s found herself in makes her realize that she needs to protect her family and sends them off to lay low for a while. She seems to make peace with everyone in this scene, even her father. She sees them off and prepares for the future.

TD 2x7 13

At the end of the episode, we also see a crosscut of an exchange between Velcoro and Ani. Both seem to connect on a more intimate level and consummate their newfound understanding of each other. I expect this to play a key role in the showdown next week.

Velcoro

Velcoro is also reeling from the party we saw in last week’s episode. While Velcoro does not have a heavy role in tonight’s episode, he is still very much involved. Velcoro informs Frank of Blake’s dealings with Osip and explains everything he learned at the party. This makes Frank very angry.

TD 2x7 22

Velcoro also makes the attempt to go into the city to hand the papers off to Davis only to find her corpse sitting in the car. She doesn’t look to have put up a fight, leading me to believe that she must’ve known whoever killed her.

TD 2x7 15

The prime suspect would probably be Burris, since he seemed to be everywhere this episode. Velcoro has ultimately been set up, again, probably by Burris, and is forced to go into hiding back at the motel.

TD 2x7 5

Eventually, he opens up to Ani, saying that he’s worried about what his son will think of him. Ani responds with, “You are a good man.”

Frank

After learning of Blake’s deception, Frank takes care of him.

TD 2x7 14

Frank also learns of everything being planned against him, which leads him to create a plan to take revenge and get out of the country. Frank secures money, plane tickets, fake passports, and some heavy firepower.

TD 2x7 12 TD 2x7 11 TD 2x7 7

It’s unlikely that we’ll see the Russians help out next week, though I wouldn’t be surprised if they sent some guys to lend a hand to Frank’s cause.

TD 2x7 4

On top of that, Frank burns everything the Russians have purchased over the last six months, effectively burning everything he’s spent his entire life working for. He’s also essentially burning his past and is on track to becoming a different person. There’s no going back after this, and he knows that.

Woodrugh

Unfortunately, Woodrugh met his end his episode. I was rooting for him, too. After getting blackmailed into taking a meeting with the mysterious person behind the text messages he was receiving, Woodrugh uncovers Burris’s connection with Black Mountain, Catalyst, and Ben Caspere. Before all that, Woodrugh hides his mom and fiancé in a small motel. At first, neither of them want to be there, but later on, it seems the mom and the fiancé bonded.

TD 2x7 20

Woodrugh then runs some errands at the police station where he figures out the Caspere-Holloway-Burris-Teague-blue diamonds connection.

TD 2x7 19 TD 2x7 17

Here, Woodrugh also finds out that Ani is wanted for questioning. All of this takes place as he’s being spied on by Burris. The framing of this shot is a foreshadowing of how the two will meet again later in the episode. Expanding on this, it is now clear that it was Burris who wore the Crow’s head when he shot Velcoro. The shotgun used pellets only available to cops. Now that we know that, it’s also clear Burris dumped Caspere’s body on the side of the road, and may even had a hand in killing Caspere. According to Blake, the killers are still unknown.

TD 2x7 18

It’s likely Burris tailed Woodrugh to the Black Mountain meeting, although it was awfully convenient that he’d just be behind the door Woodrugh comes out of. Maybe the building Woodrugh found himself in had only one door?

While waiting for Woodrugh to return, the mom and fiancé watch Splendor in the Grass. The film was released in 1961 and tells the tale of a forbidden love between a young girl and a man belonging to a powerful family. The forbidden love concept is one last callback to the strange Oedipus complex Woodrugh and his mom shared, but more importantly, I believe the last line of the film resonates a stronger message about where Woodrugh’s fiancé and mother will end up. The last line of the film is a voiceover and is as follows: “Though nothing can bring back the hour of splendor in the grass of glory in the flower; We will grieve not, rather find Strength in what remains behind.”

TD 2x7 2

Well, there’s only one great thing left behind from Woodrugh’s legacy, and that’s his child. This notion is further reinforced by the last image Woodrugh’s fiancé sees after his death, which is a scene in the film in which one of the characters is holding an infant.

Overall, I thought this was a solid episode. I don’t know if Ani and Velcoro’s actions sit well with me. Earlier in the episode, Ani tells Emily that maybe she was not put on the Earth “just for fucking,” yet, Ani was sexualized right off the bat in episode one and ends up having sex with yet another peer working a case with her. I guess we’ve seen Ani be condescending and a little bit of a hypocrite all season when it comes to dealing with her sister’s sexuality, but it would have been nice to see Ani’s character make progress in that regard. I would’ve been happy if all we got was the encounter between Velcoro and Ani at the start of this episode. Still, maybe her character is progressing in that she is finally having sex with someone she has a true emotional connection with. Also, the scene was done tastefully.

Predictions

With only one episode left, I think we can all expect a ton of shooting, a ton of driving, and maybe an explosion or two. The finale will also run for 90 minutes. We’ll perhaps see Burris in his Crowman outfit, as well as find out who’s behind this empire. It can’t be the mayor, Holloway, Burris, Osip, Blake, or the head of Catalyst. It’s obvious they all answer to someone. Still, I believe whoever’s at the head is someone we’ve seen before. That leaves some wild guesses, including Velcoro’s father, the bartender at Frank and Velcoro’s meeting place, the two Mexicans who wanted to be besties with Frank, Ani’s father, Pitler, or even Ani’s ex-partner.

TD 2x5_17

As far as character deaths go, I can see Velcoro sacrificing himself for Ani and Frank. With Davis dead, and the details of this case leaking to the public, Velcoro won’t have much to live for other than to become a symbol of heroism for his son. Ani might end up quitting the force to pursue a different career path. A private investigator sounds right for her, but we already saw that in Marty from season one. After the exchange, and perhaps snagging a few million from the deal, Frank will be able to take his wife and live off the grid for the remainder of his life, should he choose to do so. I also wouldn’t be surprised if some of that money made its way to Woodrugh’s mom and fiancé.

Got any theories of your own? Feel free the share! Until then, see you next week!

Unfortunately for us, the video quality isn’t all that great. It’s possible someone has leaked it from the impending Season 1 blu-ray/DVD release. The good news is we have eight minutes of unseen footage of The Flash.

Beware, if you haven’t finished season one yet, you WILL get spoiled.

‘The Flash’ returns October 6th!

Things sure are ramping up to the season finale. Building off of last Sunday’s episode, we find our true detectives finally delving into the parties we’ve been hearing about all season.

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Ray

We immediately start the episode with the confrontation we’ve been waiting all week for:

TD 2x6_1

While it was nice to see Velcoro and Frank make amends, I felt it was a little too easy. Although, it’s quite possible that both Velcoro and Frank put too much blind trust into each other, and they know it.  As Frank puts it, Velcoro is possibly the only friend he has left, to which Velcoro remarks how “fucked up” that scenario would be.

Velcoro leaves with the promise that Frank will look up who gave false information as to who raped Velcoro’s then wife. Let’s just say Frank is telling the truth and was deceived all those years ago. Who would set up Frank, and ultimately Velcoro? Is it connected to the organization that did Caspere in? Another thing I wanted to bring up is the sudden appearance of a prime suspect in his wife’s case.

TD 2x6_4

Velcoro visits him at the jail and threatens him enough to scare anyone, innocent or not. The suspect is also conveniently suffering from a some sort of condition in which his memory fails him regularly.  Is it possible that this sudden appearance is meant to detract Velcoro from his work on the Caspere case? It wouldn’t be the first time one of the detectives has had their personal lives put on display by the group that killed Caspere. Fans won’t have to think too far back to remember Teague shadowing Woodrugh before the shootout.

Eventually Velcoro ends up back home, alone, and begins to go on a binge. He drinks, does coke, works out, and eventually comes to the realization that he can’t be in his son’s life anymore.

TD 2x6_9

It’s somber moment, but Velcoro ultimately makes his decision with the best intentions in mind. He wants his son to be at peace and not be in the midst of a custody battle in which he may find out unsavory aspects about where exactly he comes from. Velcoro promises that he will forfeit the custody battle if his son is to never learn about his real father.

Frank

TD 2x6_8

After previously contesting the idea of adopting a child, claiming that it would be taking on someone else’s problems, Frank transcends into a sort of father figure to a former employee’s son. This comes after Frank pays a visit to Stan’s widow. It was here that Frank learned that Blake is perhaps more deceitful than he anticipated. The widow reveals that soon after Stan’s death, Blake came by asking her what Stan knew and if he knew anything about his eventual murder.  As we know now, Blake is also working with the same group that throws the orgy parties. These are the same parties Caspere attended. This particular party we saw tonight was also attended by the Osip and the rep from Catalyst.

TD 2x6_10

Eventually Frank gets a lead on the woman who pawned some of Caspere’s items that would eventually lead to the shootout. According to the woman, a cop paid her $500, plus whatever she made by pawning the items so long as she did it. She described the cop as tall, white, and slender. Blake is a likely suspect. Unfortunately we’ll have to wait to find the answer because Frank’s lead was killed by a pair of Mexicans who seem to either have a gross misunderstanding about what exactly’s been going on in Vinci, or potential partners with the organization that killed Caspere.

TD 2x6_16

Cabin

The cabin makes another brief appearance in this episode. Last week, I suggested that the chair was the same that Caspere sat in as he was tortured and/or ultimately killed. Tonight, one of the detectives mentioned that the blood belonged to a female, which makes sense, but it was also mentioned that the entire room is contaminated and the results may not prove to be as fruitful as Ani and Woodrugh would hope.

TD 2x6_2

Also in last week’s episode, it was revealed that Pitler was a regular surgeon that specialized in operating on women with the purpose of making them look more attractive at these orgy-like parties. This cabin may have very well been Pitler’s operating room.

Woodrugh

Not much happens with Woodrugh internally, but he does seem to be the most solid detective of the bunch. In this episode, Woodrugh further investigates the origin of the blue diamonds. His search first leads him to an insurance company that tells him that the diamonds were stolen during the LA riots in 1992.

TD 2x6_5

This leads him to track down the cop that took the case in ’92. During the conversation, the cop mentions that whoever did the robbery were trained professionals. Parents who owned the shop where killed execution style in front of their children who were hiding in a cabinet.

TD 2x6_6

The cop was obviously shaken by the case and really didn’t want to talk about it. From the sound of it, it would be right to assume that whoever committed the robbery is tied to the group or organization that would come to kill Caspere.

Ani

TD 2x6_7

If there was ever a sequence to make us feel uncomfortable, it was Ani’s experience throughout this episode. First, I think it’s important to point out that Ani’s cover for attending the party was Athena. Ani posed as her sister and assumed her identity in order to gain entry to the mansion party. I’ll go into the psychoanalysis later and we’ll instead focus on Ani’s drug-induced trip.

Ani’s behavior to sexual situations has been highlighted a few times throughout this season. We know about her office romances, we’ve seen her browse a porn site, and let’s not forget she tried something kinky with her then boyfriend at the start of the season. As to what she did, well, no one really knows for sure, but you can use your imagination.

During her drug trip, Ani begins to have vivid visions involving memories of when she was a little girl. She begins to see a man around the mansion.

TD 2x6_19

The man, who we can safely assume sexually assaulted her, appears to have come from the commune that she grew up in. Thus, we now know why she places hostility toward her father and the life she left behind.

What really stuck out to me was the appearance of a crow in her vision. If you think back to earlier in the season, the crow mask was seen in the backseat next to Caspere’s dead body in the first episode. Then, the crow’s head made a second appearance not too long after in a scene where Velcoro was shot a point-blank range with buckshot rounds. Could the crow in the vision be alluding to a relationship between her father, the commune, and the group responsible for Caspere’s murder?

TD 2x6_20

Eventually, Ani, her mission person, Velcoro and Woodrugh escape the mansion, but not before taking all of the contracts with signatures with them.

TD 2x6_21

Psychoanalysis

Larua Mulvey, a film theorist, came up with the concept of the “male gaze.” The concept is simple: In films, especially classical era films, the male gaze is present whenever a male is gawking at a female. The male gaze also has three different gazes: The person behind the camera, the characters portrayed in the film, and us as spectators. I’m finding this sort of psychoanalytic technique is being used mostly to make audiences feel uncomfortable. It was heavily present in the later seasons of Mad Men and is a big part of tonight’s episode.

First, the male gaze is present when Ani walks in with the other girls. The room is full of men gawking at them. Ultimately, this makes Ani rather uncomfortable. It’s unusual to see Ani like this since we’ve seen her dominate conversations and rooms throughout the season.

TD 2x6_13TD 2x6_14

The composition of these shots was also similar to Silence of the Lambs. Both share a dominating female character put in an uneasy situation. The following shots from Silence of the Lambs comes at a time when Clarice Starling must tell all of the officers, who happen to be male, to leave the room so that a body can be examined properly. It is another example of the male gaze.

Silence1 Silence

Mulvey also has some writings on scopophilia. Scopophilia is the act of taking gratification in looking. Perhaps the best example of this concept being put to good use is Michael Powell’s 1960 classic Peeping TomPeeping Tom is a film in which a serial killer records his victims final moments as he kills them. Each of the victims are females and the entire film is rather strange. Scopophilia is also present in Hitchock’s Rear Window. The film’s protagonist becomes obsessed with peering into his neighbors lives by pointing his camera at their windows. Scopophilia is more closely tied to voyeurism when placed in a sexual context.

"I've been watching you, Miss."
“I’ve been watching you, Miss.”

Each of these concepts are present in this mansion sequence. The voyeuristic nature pops up when an interested male takes Ani around and stops in front of a threesome taking place in front of them. The man promptly says, “Oh yes, here we are. You care to watch for a while? I do so enjoy the natural state.”

The sequence is further off-putting due to the musical score too. The score was unlike anything in the series so far. It’s classical undertones made the mansion feel bigger, yet gave the feeling of isolation whenever we saw Ani walking from room to room. It was almost as if the shows creators took cues from classical era cinema by dressing incorporating the use of bowties, dresses, and atmosphere just to throw us off.

TD 2x6_11

Overall, I thought this was a solid episode. I’m thinking next week, we’ll probably see Katherine Davis killed, leaving our detectives extremely vulnerable for the season finale in just two weeks.

Did I miss anything? Want to share some thoughts? Please do! Thanks for stopping by!

Coming off a stellar year, Universal has announced some details regarding the next installment in the ‘Jurassic’ franchise. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are set to reprise their roles while Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly, the duo who rewrote ‘Jurassic World’, are set to write the sequel.

jurassic1

Colin Trevorrow, who directed ‘Jurassic World’ will produce alongside Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall. For those of you wondering, the sequel to ‘Jurassic World’ will join Godzilla 2, Black Panther, The Flash, Avengers: Infinity War Part I, Aquaman, Captain Marvel, and the stand alone Han Solo Star Wars film. Sounds like a good year!

There are countless fans who would love to live in the Star Wars universe, and now we’re one step closer. Rob McLellan, who has directed numerous shorts including Abe, has teamed up with VFX guru Craig Stiff and HammerheadVR to create this beautiful Star Wars VR Tech Demo.

I’ve always wanted to punch Jar-Jar in the face. If this gets me closer to that experience, consider me sold.

The build is was created and is running on Unreal Engine 4. The creators hope a playable build sometime next year when the Oculus Rift launches.

You can check out more of Rob McLellan’s work here.

Fox announced today the addition of two agents who will appear in one episode of this six-part series. Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under) will take on the roll of Agent Einstein. Einstein is described as “sharp” and “confident.” Robbie Amell (The Flash) will be playing Agent Miller, who will have both “smart” and “smooth” characteristics.

Ambrose _Amell

Some have speculated that these two will play Scully and Mulder in a flashback, but that won’t be the case according to Fox. Both will appearing in present day.

You read that right! While the suit looks mostly the same, the white emblem is more than enough to get fans excited. This is coming off numerous announcements including the casting of Captain Cold’s father and other casting news announced at San Diego Comic-Con two weeks ago.

The show’s executive producer, Greg Berlanti, has previously noted that the show will delve more into comic book storylines. This change in the emblem is a start!

Who do you think will inspire the emblem change? Barry or Cisco?

We’re back with another True Detective recap! This episode certainly had a faster pace than the previous few. We hit a time jump, by sixty-six days, since the shootout that happened at the end of Down Will Come. The plot has moved forward and we’re finally starting to see some things begin to connect. I won’t summarize the entire episode, but will instead focus on some of the more important aspects.

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Ray Velcoro

Sixty-six days hasn’t really changed Velcoro. Sure, he quit his job, gave into Frank’s offer of being hired as muscle, but his priority hasn’t changed. Once again, Velcoro’s son is the center of his attention. Since quitting the force, money has become an issue and now, more than ever, it would seem Velcoro is afraid of losing his son.

TD 2x5_9

Eventually, we find Velcoro sitting across from his ex and her legal team. The judge orders a paternity test, which angers Velcoro because he knows he’s not the biological father. After the session, Velcoro’s lawyer informs him to secure more cash to fight for his son.

TD 2x5_14

Velcoro goes to Frank looking to earn some more money. Frank asks him to shadow a suspected mole within his group. During this surveillance, Velcoro stumbles upon the mayor’s son, Pitler, and Frank’s associate in a meeting to inspect girls. It would seem as if these are the girls who attend parties as escorts up north. This was first mentioned by Bezzerides’ sister. Later in this same episode, Bezzerides asks her sister if she can get her into one of these parties.

TD 2x5_15

The next day, Velcoro meets with Bezzerides, Woodrugh, and Katherine Davis, the state attorney. After wanting nothing to do with it, Velcoro’s arm is twisted by Davis. She informs him that she can help him keep custody of his son. Velcoro then states that they should all start with the search for a camera and a hard drive that was never recovered during the original investigation. The only thing missing from the meeting was Jack Shephard screaming, “WE HAVE TO GO BACK!!!”

TD 2x5_18

Each of the investigators begin to depart, but not before Velcoro learns something about his past. Davis informs Velcoro that the man who raped his the mother of his child had been captured and his DNA matched with evidence from the assault. This is big because, up until this point, we thought Velcoro took his own revenge with the help of Frank. Frank set him up.

TD 2x5_19

The Hard Drive

Now that Velcoro, Woodrugh, and Bezzerides are on back on the case, Caspere’s hard drive has become more important than ever. During Pitler’s interrogation, which was conducted by Velcoro, it is mentioned that Caspere and his associates would regularly throw parties for wealthy individuals. These individuals presumably had interactions with some of the escorts brought in for the parties, only, Caspere and his associates would record them so that they would in turn have dirt on whoever showed up.

TD 2x5_23

One can now assume that this hard drive, and its contents, may have lead Caspere to his demise. In any case, Velcoro and company aren’t the only ones looking for it. Catalyst, the land firm dealing out plots of land for the high speed rail system Frank was involved in has interest in the hard drive too.

TD 2x5_22

In fact, he’s offered Frank the chance of his lifetime: The land he wants for the hard drive. It’s going to be interesting considering Frank and Velcoro won’t be on good terms.

Detective Teague

TD 2x5_21

Teague, if you remember, wasn’t really a team player. Now, we know why. It’s apparent Teague planted the watch for Woodrugh to find that would eventually set up the shootout at the end of the last episode. We also learened that Teague was conducting a side investigation, possibly covering up tracks. Anyone who had their suspicions of him should feel justified, especially after we saw him spying on Woodrugh in the third episode.

TD 2x5_29

Unfortunately for Teague, he didn’t know just how expendable he was to his boss. Of course, Bezzerides, Woodrugh, and Velcoro were supposed to die with him.

TD 2x5_30

Assorted Musings

It would appear as though Bezzerides dropped her E-cig habits.

TD 2x5_25

Pictures of George Bush with the Vinci mayor return!

TD 2x5_13 TD 2x5_12

During the scene in which Woodrugh visits mother with an Oedipus complex, a picture of her as a dancer can be seen in the background.

TD 2x5_4

The shack location may be where Caspere was tortured and killed. If you think back to when Velcoro and Bezzerides inspected Caspere’s body, you’ll remember that Caspere’s genitals were blown off. He probably sat in this chair right after it happened.

TD 2x5_27

Regardless, this shack is certainly not where the car carrying Caspere’s body departed from in the first episode. If you remember, the car departed from an apartment close to the 101 in Hollywood. Also, judging by the abandonment and lack of clean-up, it would seem as though this shack is not a regular location to conduct their business.

TD 2x5_26

Last, but certainly not least, a popular theory is that the bartender may be a big part of whoever our true detectives are chasing.

TD 2x5

Back when LOST was on its original run, I did recaps here on Geekscape. The purpose was to gather all of the information viewers might have missed and put it in one place. It was also meant to create a discussion. You don’t have to agree with me, in fact, I would like to invite you to share your thoughts on this episode below in the comment section! In any case, we can all agree that with each episode of True Detective, there’s a lot to unpack, so let’s get started.

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Fertility

First, I’d like to address a central theme in this episode. Through each of our protagonists plots this episode, the fertility motif appeared and reappeared. The first sight of it came within the first minutes of the episode in the form of Frank’s avocado trees. Frank begins to get angry when he learns that his avocado trees aren’t growing. The gardner tells him that seeds are there, but suggests the problem may be the dirt. There is something wrong with the fertilization.

“I paid for fucking avocado trees and now you tell me 'can’t grow?'”
“I paid for fucking avocado trees and now you tell me ‘can’t grow?’”

This scene was interesting because it foreshadowed issues Frank and his partner will be having for presumably for the rest of the season, assuming she survives the season.

The fertility motif especially follows Frank from scene to scene. The bakery sequence is evidence of this. Frank visits some acquaintances with the hopes of establishing some new cashflow after losing everything as a result of Caspere’s disappearance. The scene begins with this shot:

TD 2x4_9

Even appearing the background are children’s birthday party decorations and candy.

TD 2x4_10

Sticking with Frank on his search for money, the show takes us to an apartment complex managed by a man who Frank seems to know from past dealings. Again, the scene is preempted with a shot of children playing in the grass/dirt.

TD 2x4_13

Frank walks past the children playing as he makes his way to the managers office.

TD 2x4_14

Okay, so Frank’s plot is consistent with the motif. We get it. So we’ll move to Woodrugh, whose connection with the motif is obvious enough. In this episode, we find out Woodrugh is going to be a dad and thus professes his love to his ex-girlfriend claiming that this was the best thing that could have happened to the both of them.

TD 2x4_17

The motif is also present in Velcoro an Bezzerides’ plot in tracking Caspere’s whereabouts. Caspere’s GPS information leads them out to an area that has not been developed. After getting an official from the Environmental Protection Agency to their location, they learn that the land is bad. In fact, most of the farmers have left and families are giving up.

TD 2x4_19

Sure, the problem with the land not taking is pretty much the same situation we saw Frank in the start of the episode, but the motif still fits.

Woodrugh

Woodrugh had a tough time this episode. After a few weeks of guessing whether or not he was gay, Woodrugh sorta figured it out himself when we woke up in his former military squadmate’s apartment wearing nothing but his underwear. Woodrugh doesn’t remember how or when he got there, but he did sleep with his friend.

TD 2x4_4

Woodrugh immediately becomes disturbed and embarrassed. He leaves hastily and takes a cab to his motorcycle. Now, here’s an interesting scene. In the cap, Woodrugh begins to cry. We can assume it’s because he’s reacting to the events that unfolded the previous night, and maybe this is just me, but when Woodrugh’s tear begins to roll down his cheek, it almost seems as if we can hear a woman screaming as if he’s remembering something from his time with Black Mountain.

TD 2x4_5

In the previous episode, Woodrugh explains to this same friend that he’s moved past what he’s done while working for Black Mountain and that his friend should do the same. It is at this point where his friend begins to confess that he thinks about him, which prompts Woodrugh to react violently and storm off. I’m only guessing here, but is it possible Woodrugh killed women and children in the Middle East?

In any case, once Woodrugh gets out of the cab to find his motorcycle is missing and it starts to set him over the edge.

TD 2x4_6

As Woodrugh approaches his hotel, he is greeted by a mob of reporters. They instantly start to ask him about his ties with Black Mountain and specific events he may have been involved in.

TD 2x4_7

Interestingly enough, one reporter shouts something about Woodrugh’s allegations to a history of abuse against women. Woodrugh takes off into full sprint, but no one really chases him. Were the reporters really there?

TD 2x4_8

As he further falls into a hole, Woodrugh’s bout with identity becomes the focal point of his troubles. After being picked up by Ray, Woodrugh confesses that he’s “I did everything they said, man. Army, PD, it doesn’t matter. I’ve been listening to them for so fucking long, I don’t even know who the fuck I am.”

TD 2x4_12

All the Best Cowboys…

Velcoro’s daddy issues make another appearance. In the previous episode, we were treated to Velcoro’s dad, who seems to be disenchanted with the LAPD and his son. Having been a former cop, Velcoro’s dad reminisces about the old days of the police force and condemns Velcoro’s career and the current police force.  However, Velcoro still sees his father as a hero, regardless of what he thinks in present day. There are two major events that make me believe this:

1. In the previous episode, during Velcoro’s dream, Velcoro’s father is dressed in his uniform. This is symbolic of the way Velcoro sees his dad and he desperately tries to live up to his standards. Unfortunately for Velcoro, he’s feels as though he’s failing. This is evidenced by the fact that in the dream, the father refers to Velcoro as a boy running from giants.

2. Velcoro sees his dad’s police badge in the trash can and takes it out. He asks then asks if he can take the badge to give to his own son. The passing of the badge occurs this episode.

TD 2x4_21

Velcoro wants his son to see him as Velcoro sees his own father: A hero. The badge signifies that and chooses that to be his parting gift, as Velcoro prepares to surrender his visitation rights.

Shootout

It’s obvious now Vinci’s mayor and police chief are closer to the people behind Caspere’s murder than we may have previously thought. While they did assign Velcoro to keep tabs on the investigation, his life was essentially put on the line and in turn revealed how expendable he is to the mayor and chief. It’s going to get interesting tonight and I expect our true detectives to become tighter knit.

Got theories, questions, or comments? Please don’t hesitate to share!

After attending SDCC for many years now, I find myself in search of something new every year. “New” is a relative term, but I use the word in its purest definition. Legends of Orkney is new. It hasn’t been done before, and the entire project is a transmedia ecosystem at its best. A book series, and a game, Legends of Orkney is attempting to redefine how we experience literature and video games.

BattleKasters

At SDCC, I was able to sit down with both the book’s author, Alane Adams (The Coal Thief), and the game’s creator, Brent Friedman (Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars, Empires and Allies, Halo 4).  I first sat down with Friedman and began to become engrossed in the world he was describing. The first thing Friedman described was how the game will tie into the book series. The game will fly under its own banner as BattleKasters, but has everything to do with the Legends of Orkney book series. So what sets this game apart from the thousands of mobile games out in the field already? Well, Friedman describes BattleKaster as a “location-based gaming experience.” Experience is the operative word here. Friedman continues with his description, noting that “there is something different about playing a game where you actually have to wander around that takes it beyond just sitting there and typing onto a screen.” You read that right, folks. You’re going to have to go outside.

Legends of Orkney3

“How is all this possible?” You might be asking yourself this, but you probably already have an idea. Beacon technology was invented by Apple and gave each of their iDevices (iPads, iPhones) a beacon that transmits a bluetooth signal. Eventually, Apple allowed third party developers in to build external beacons. These external beacons were placed out in the physical world and would in turn talk to the iDevices. The same tech now exists on Android. Still with me? Great! Essentially what this means is that it is now possible to take real world cities and turn them into game boards in the game. For example, at SDCC, Battlekasters had taken over the Gaslamp District across from the convention center and turned it into its own game board. SDCC attendees who played  were presented  with a map of the area showcasing interactive quests. It is then up to players to physically walk to wherever the quest is located and begin their journey.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzT-ZvP62aE

BattleKasters’ fundamental gameplay is similar card-based games such as Magic: The Gathering. Fans of Magic will immediately feel at home with BattleKasters, however, when you cast a spell in BattleKasters, the game board changes for everyone in the area. But don’t worry, anti-social gamers are still able to play the game anonymously on the street. However, you should beware of these gamers because BattleKasters also allows you to set traps on in the area. Friedman recalls seeing people setting traps in different places and then try to look inconspicuous and wait for people to walk into said traps. This adds to the determination on whether or not you’re playing for the light side of magic, or the dark side. Still, BattleKasters offers a unique dynamic for gamers to become social outside the game. You may meet people playing in your area and you have the opportunity to ignore them, play with them, or play against them. It’s all part of an experience, which is what Friedman promises.

Legends of Orkney1

The network BattleKasters uses allows the developers to make changes on the fly. For example, they can increase or decrease the value of a certain item or adjust the rarity of a card. The network is also described as a learning network in which players will be recommended more of what they’re interested in when exploring different types of cards and information.

What also sets BattleKasters apart from other mobile games is its overall goal. BattleKasters sets out to garner interest for the book series, Legends of Orkney. It is Friedman’s hope “to get people to play twenty to thirty minutes, gain all of these different cards, have a couple of characters that are talking to each other, get a little sense of the world with cool animations and make you go, ‘I’m a little curious to know a little more about this world.'” Much to Friedman’s and Adams’ joy, the conversion rate between game to book has been high. Better yet, it is with both BattleKasters and the Legends of Orkney book series that creators hope to create a long-lasting community.

Perhaps the most exciting thing coming out of BattleKasters are its goals in expanding to a global scale as well as introducing a monster battling component. Players will be able to confront monster boss battles, and be able to capture monsters to use in future battles. BattleKasters is available now on iOS and Android, but its campaign and quests are only available at conventions where the BattleKasters team is present. Of course, this won’t be the case for long as they hope the game will be ready for wide release sometime later this year.

Red Sun

The book and the game go hand in hand. If you play the game, you’re going to want to read the book.

– Alane Adams

Red Sun is the first in a trilogy of books that will work with the BattleKasters game. Written by Alane Adams, work on Red Sun began with one simple goal: Write a book her twelve-year-old son could read. A variety of young adult novels came to mind, and Adams settled on something along lines of the Percy Jackson series, but with an entirely different mythology and story. Adams eventually settled on Norse mythology.

Legends of Orkney4

The story revolves around a twelve-year-old boy who is also the son of Odin and a powerful witch. The story further came together when Adams discovered the islands of Orkney. For those who aren’t Orkney scholars, Orkney is a real set of islands right off the coast of Scotland. The islands themselves are often the location of Athurian legends and also play home to some of the most powerful witches of mythology.

The boy, having parents from both the light and dark sides of magic, now has access to both skillsets and must now navigate through his own adventure while making conscious decisions of what side of the magic he wants to be on. In this sense, the first book also revolves around the protagonist’s search for identity, while future books will deal with decisions he has made in his pursuit.

Legends of Orkney5

The first book was written before the conception of BattleKasters. Since then, Adams has gone back to edit Red Sun in an effort to give certain characters more of a voice in the novels so that their appearance in BattleKasters is more meaningful. According to Adams, the games have affected the books in that it has certainly enriched them by way of expanding the story and different character storylines. Working with Friedman has also spurred the creation of creatures for both the novel and the game. With what Adams and Friedman are promising, the Legends of Orkney world will be huge.

Legends of Orkney

Alane Adams and Brent Friedman are truly at the tip of the spear and it’s going to be exciting to see Legends of Orkney and BattleKasters take off. This sort of transmedia project is nothing but good news for lovers of literature and video games. While there are properties that take advantage of telling stories through different mediums, none do it with as much fluidity as the Orkney team. The team will be making their next appearance at PAX, so look for them there and make sure to get some time in BattleKasters. We’ll update you with any news that’s released. Red Sun is set to release August 4, 2015. You can pre-order the book here.

 Alexander Calvert

Anarky is set to join the next season of Arrow as a criminal-for-hire, and is willing to do whatever it takes to leave his mark. During the Arrow panel at Comic-Con, it was revealed that Anarky would be working with Damien Darhk.

Anarky

Those who read the comics know Anarky works with tech and fights for what he thinks is right. He is also a Batman villain and has also appeared in the video game, Batman: Arkham Origins. Alexander Calvert most recently appeared in a few episodes of The Returned and Bates Motel.

Earlier today, it was also announced that Arrow has also casted Mr. Terrific!

Arrow season four is set to premiere Oct. 7! What are your thoughts on all of this casting news!?

Everyone has someone to answer to. Michael Ironside has been cast as Lewis Snart, an abusive criminal. Fans of the lore and show will realize that Ironside will be doing double-duty as a father to both Cold (Wentworth Miller) and Lisa Snart/Golden Glider (Peyton List).

Ironside will be making his first guest appearance in the third episode of the season, appropriately titled, Family of Rouges, in which Lewis Snart returns to Central City after being released from prison. Of course, Miller and List will costar as Captain Cold and Golden Glider respectively.

Michael Ironside

This is coming after an already big announcement of the inclusion of Wally West, Jay Garrick, Patty Spivot, and Professor Zoom.

Note: This article contains thoughts and experiences from both myself and Eric Francisco. The builds we played were in the Alpha stage and were played on both PS3 and PC.

One of our personal highlights of this year’s SDCC was definitely Star Wars Battlefront. The title was available to play at NerdHQ and a couple of Geekscapists were able to get some extended hands-on time with the game.

Lots of things come to mind when the ‘Battlefront’ name is mentioned. One of the things that come to mind are the set pieces found in the past two iterations. They’re structured like an interactive Michael Bay movie, with huge, thrilling set pieces that are easy to follow through. Star Wars is the most recognizable blockbuster of all time, and let us tell you, ‘Battlefront’ does not disappoint.

‘Survival Mode’

The first mode we played was a co-op mission in which two players must survive an onslaught of Stormtrooper waves while completing sub-mission objectives. Players can choose whether or not to play the game in first or third person. One of us, I won’t say who *cough* Eric *cough* felt that the differences between first and third person were minimal at best. To switch, players must hold down the D-pad on the controller, but it only seemed to work half the time.

Regardless, the controls were easy to grasp, which is a good thing seeming that the last iteration of ‘Battlefront’ was over a decade ago (sorry if I just made you feel old). The gameplay feels natural to anyone easily familiar with shooters. Even if you’re not, it’s still got a pick-up-and-play accessibility, which is the ideal for a broad product as Star Wars is.

battlefront3

The gameplay feels solid, even though it’s in the alpha stage. We usually found ourselves playing in third person, as that’s what we got used to in the in past installments of the franchise. However, playing in first person seemed to be a little more challenging at times.

battlefront4

Upon starting the match, we were prompted to choose our primary weapons. Each weapon seemed to balanced according to the map and player behavior. For example, a Heavy Blaster is the equivalent to that of a shotgun, which will deal a ton of damage, but have a poor firing rate. Players who decided to use their jetpack to get right in the middle of a Stormtrooper squad should go for this. This level of thinking pre-match is reminiscent of the past Battlefront iterations in which we all had our favorite classes according to each map.

This particular map had cliffs and ramps up to higher passageways. Jetpacks were a must. The jetpacks in this game are different from traditional jetpacks that you’ll find in a game like Halo. Instead, think of this pack as a booster pack. It’ll propel you into the air in any direction you want to go, and it’s awesome. Players who pick up the jetpack’s use quickly will be able to get a decent advantage over unsuspecting players.

20 vs 20 ‘Walker Assault’

battlefront1

Unfortunately, Eric couldn’t join me for this 20 v 20 match as he had much better things to do. It’s okay. I didn’t let it bother me.

When I first heard about the AT-AT’s having a pre-destined path to walk along, I admit, I was a little upset. All it took was one match as the Rebels to realize how great of an idea it was. Walker’s are now not as invincible as they once were, but they are a terrible foe to come across. During 20v20 matches, the Rebel Alliance must find a way  to activate and protect satellites so that information can be sent to passing Y-Wings to essentially drop Ion bombs onto the walkers. Once this is done, the walkers will be temporarily disabled and vulnerable to any and all fire. It’s also a great time to get into a Snowspeeder and tie its legs up.

battlefront2

Fans who have witnessed the past E3 trailers have seen just how much action goes on in these multiplayer matches, and let me tell you, the E3 trailer is a pretty good representation of what you’ll be playing. While I did play on the keyboard and mouse, I found that the quicker players around me grasped the concept of being able to use abilities, such as the jetpack, personal shield, and ion shots, the better they faired on the battlefield. This was partially due to the terrain of the map, which seemed to be a character of its own. Players would routinely find cover in the oddest places, like behind an abandoned box, or even behind a small rock. Regardless, this made the experience even better. This meant that players must apply quick-thinking if they are to survive the trip to where the action is happening.

battlefront

Another major addition is the concept of using power-ups. These power-ups allow players, who get to the location and pick it up first, to use extra artillery. The power-ups I found ranged from a large team shield, to smart rockets perfect for AT-ST’s, and an airstrike.

Perhaps the only downside experienced was the lack of air vehicles around the map. It seemed as if there was a slight learning curve to piloting and no one wanted to take the time to figure it out. Regardless, the few X-Wing’s and Snowspeeder’s that made it into the air were briefly celebrated before the team watched them crash into the ground.

Overall, what little we saw of the game was more than enough to get really excited for the game. Star Wars: Battlefront is in every way playing out the battles you only dreamed of while playing with toys. It’s current-gen make-up not only make it look pleasing, but the technology lying underneath the hood makes Star Wars truly realized.

Star Wars: Battlefront is set to release November 17, 2015.

By now, hardcore fans everywhere have seen the videos. Warzone promises to be the next step into large-scale multiplayer combat. Before this, Halo‘s biggest multiplayer mode was Big Team Battle, which pit two teams of 8 against each other. Warzone is similar in concept, but it pushes out to be bigger than anything fans have experienced before. Warzone is everything you see; it’s new, it’s big, it’s fast, and it’s fun.

h5 warzone 4

From the time the match started, until the time it ended, I couldn’t help but think how fun this mode is going to be with friends. As you’ve previously seen, each game starts with retaking your base from enemies. In this particular map, the base is overrun by Prometheans. Surprisingly, these enemies aren’t as easy to take down as you’d think and I wholeheartedly prefer it this way. It’ll take your entire team to eliminate enemies in your base effectively and quick. But once your base is free and clear, you and your team are then thrust into the large map against an opposing team.

Halo 5 E3 Warzone 2

Throughout the match, each team is vying to reach 1,000 points before the other. Points are of course given when you kill the opposing team and capture bases placed around the map. Teams that are down by a ton of points should not be discouraged. If your team is able to rally, and if you are able to destroy the enemy’s core in their own base, your team will win the game.

h5 warzone 5

What makes Warzone stand out from previous Halo multiplayer modes is the inclusion of enemy AI, and not just at the start of the match. Throughout Warzone, players will also have to battle against more Promotheans, Covenant, and opposing team Marines. Marines will keep watch over captured bases and will communicate with each other in an attempt to take down enemy spartans. It usually doesn’t go well.

h5 warzone3

During the match, announcements will be made making players aware of the presence of enemy AI bosses. These bosses will sometimes spawn, near bases or even in vehicles. Taking them down will reward the assassin with a large sum of points. Because of this, the AI bosses will sometimes act as a nexus and attract a larger battle between the boss and his friends, red team, and blue team. I also noticed that no two matches are the same. The game will change according to how each player plays, reacts, and decides what they want to do. One player may focus on capturing bases while another may want to hunt down enemy AI to secure some big points. Some players may want to hang back and snipe while others may want to spend points on purchasing large vehicles and comb the map.

h5 warzone

As points are earned, players are also treated to a new requisition system. For those of you familiar with Gears of War‘s Beast Mode, this will be simple. Players accumulate points in which they can spend during the respond screen so that they are able to spawn with a variety of weapons. Essentially, you are spending points to create your own custom loadout in real time. This creates an added layer of strategic thinking. Depending on how the enemy team is playing, you may want to spend your points on certain weapons. However, points spending is not limited to just weapons.

h5 warzone2

Players will also be able to spend points on vehicles. The choice is always yours, and with team communication, one team can dominate another team with poor communication. One thing about Warzone that everyone needs to realize is that the match cannot be one by just a couple of spartans. It’s going to take the team. So far, Warzone looks to be the mode I’ll dive into right after campaign.

If you’re new to this series, think Sim City, but in space. Anno 2205 is the sixth installment of the franchise and will allow players to venture to the moon. From the official release:

In Anno 2205 players will join mankind’s next step into the future, with the promise of building a better tomorrow by expanding into space. Players must develop rich metropolises on Earth that are capable of launching missions to the moon as they race to establish production colonies on the lunar surface. By mining the Moon’s resources to send back down to Earth, Anno 2205 players will receive the benefits of technological advancements and the tools to help expand their cities and transform them into thriving metropolises.

The new Anno 2205 Engine paves the way for players to build cities on islands five times the size of those in previous Anno games. It also allows for a high level of graphical detail in the game, so players can immerse themselves in futuristic cities that come to life with flying cars, more than a million thriving citizens, churning factories, and grinding mines. Gameplay uses a revolutionary session mode that lets players control several sessions on Earth and on the Moon simultaneously, and connects multiple regions via different sessions.

“We’re proud to take players beyond the realms of planet earth with the biggest Anno game ever,” said Benedikt Grindel, studio manager at Blue Byte. “The development team has been working hard to ensure we are integrating fresh and innovative new content, whilst remaining faithful to the roots of the Anno franchise.”

Fans should know that you will be able to build cities up to five times larger than any previous installment of the Anno series. Gamers will also be able utilize a new session mode that will let you control several sessions on Earth, as well as the Mon simultaneously.

As expected, Microsoft announced the next title in the Gears of War franchise.

Screen Shot 2015-06-15 at 2.34.05 PM

Two things stuck out immediately: First, we are treated to two new characters previously unseen in previous games. Second, the title of the game is Gears 4, meaning that this iteration will probably be taking place after the events of Gears of War 3. This is a welcomed assumption as I’m sure only a few of you would like to revisit something akin to Gears of War: Judgement.

Check out the gameplay preview below:

Gears 4 is set to release Holiday 2016.

It’s finally here. A full-length gameplay trailer was released today showcasing a “Walker Assault” on Hoth. The gameplay is in the Pre-Alpha stage. Regardless, the visuals and mechanics look stunning. Without further ado, here’s the vid:

Star Wars Battlefront is set to release November 17, 2015.
