Yesterday, A YouTube user going by the name Tamaki, uploaded a video on what was recently found documents of a long lost Banjo Kazooie Game for the Gameboy Color.

Developed by Rare, the game was originally very different from the GBA handheld title that we got. This story didn’t involve time travel, but instead revolved around Grunty coming back from the Dead to curse Kazooie into a monster. This is the only known picture of the game so far as it’s said that the game probably never made it past initial planning stages.

Welcome back to week 2 for Geekscape’s Super Mario Maker Course of The Week.  Today, I’ve found a level that’s not only challenging and fun, but it’s by a person you probably have already heard of.  This week, I’m highlighting a Super Mario Maker course from the man behind Castlevania himself, Koji Igarashi, or just simply IGA.

IGA levelWhile I’m not sure what the level name in English translates to, I can tell you that understanding the level is far easier. Taking place in a Super Mario World style ghost house, Your goal is to run away from a rampant chain chomp that’s been let loose. Now normally this wouldn’t be too bad, but there is a twist that makes it trickier. Not only is this rampant chain chomp unchained, but it also carries a bullet bill launcher on it’s head that fires heat seeking bullet bills.
IGA level 3The level starts fairly easy as you jump across a couple of small gaps while collecting coins along the way, but gradually get’s harder. While the level does get more difficult as it goes, it’s never too frustrating or unfair at all. All in all, the level has a very nice difficulty curve and fun factor that’ll keep you coming back to see how fast or perfect you can get through it. If you’re brave enough for the challenge check out the level at: D53D-0000-0010-77DF.  Until next time, Keep on creating and making awesome levels!

Is your wallet ready for the next wave of Super Smash Bros DLC?

If not, that’s too bad because it’s already here! Dropping just last night, Smash Bros Owners can now purchase the long awaited Super Mario Maker Stage from the E-shop for about $2.49 per version or $3.49 for both versions. That’s not all, as fans were also treated to 2 extra stages. Wii U owners can set sail on the Pirate Ship inspired by The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker for $1.99, while 3DS owners can finally experience the retro Duck Hunt stage in all it’s glory for FREE! They also added brand new Mii costumes inspired by Monster Hunter, Kid Icarus: Uprising, and more.

If you’re interested in seeing these stages and costumes in action, check out Gamexplain’s awesome tour of them. Also on a side note: There are only 3 DAYS LEFT for the fan ballot. Make sure to do your duty and vote for who you think deserves a roster slot (or just vote for Banjo Kazooie since they’re the best.) If you haven’t voted yet, you can vote here.

The Equestria Girls movie series has been an interesting one.

Originally announced back in 2013 to be a one-time spin-off movie to the popular My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic tv series, the initial announcement caused quite a bit of controversy. Most of it revolved around the fact that it was taking the characters that we had grown to know and care about out of their fantasy setting and instead put them into a high school drama setting. Controversy aside, the film ended up doing pretty well for its select theater opening and was received mostly positive by fans. And while it may not hold up as well as it did 2 years ago, it can still be seen as a guilty pleasure movie.

Its sequel, Rainbow Rocks, on the other hand, was quite a surprise, but in a good way. It managed to take most of the complaints from the 1st movie and expand/improve upon them in most aspects. Among these were an expanded story, improved pacing, better villains, and even catchier songs than the original. Funny enough, the sequel was originally just relegated to its toy line until the production team decided that they could do better with the EQG series if given another shot. They even ended the 2nd movie off on a post credits cliffhanger, foreshadowing what was to come.

EQG 2 poster

This finally brings us to the 3rd entry in the Equestria Girls series, The Friendship Games. Can this latest entry come in first, or will it end up in dead last? Before I continue let me clarify that this is a spoiler free review, so I’ll be keeping the plot to a minimum as to not spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen the film yet. Now, let’s jump into the review.

Story

We open up where the previous film left off. The real human version of Twilight Sparkle (voiced by Tara Strong) is monitoring activity going on at Canterlot High School; following the events of the battle of the bands tournament against the sirens. While she’s conducting research on the school, it’s revealed that the annual Friendship Games are coming up, and no one seems excited about it. This is mostly due to the fact that they get defeated by the students at Crystal Prep High every time the competition is held – every 4 years. With this in mind, Sunset Shimmer (voiced by Rebecca Shoichet) and the rest of the mane 6 humans make it their goal to finally break this bad tradition that’s on the school.

Friendship games character line-up

It should be mentioned that season 4 and 5 writer, Josh Haber, wrote the script this time around as opposed to Meghan McCarthy and Rainbow Rocks co-director, Ishi Rudell, steps up to main director this time. This isn’t a problem though as Friendship Games is very well written and directed. Pacing is handled very well as it throws you right into the story and only builds up to the games from there. The jokes are also very well executed this time around and better than Rainbow Rocks. They all have clear and funny deliveries and manage not to overuse or stretch any of them out.

Animation & Music

Animation and music are also other areas where the film shines. DHX Studios does another great job bringing the human world to life. It seems that with each new film the animation on the humans become much smoother and easier to animate. Of course, it wouldn’t be an Equestria Girls movie without songs, and, luckily Daniel Ingram doesn’t disappoint. Ingram has once again gone above and beyond with his compositions as always. Most of the songs range from rock to a very catchy villain song that’s almost reminiscent of Poor Unfortunate Souls from The Little Mermaid.

Negatives

Now as much as I enjoyed this, there are a couple of nitpicks I have. For one, the main antagonist doesn’t do much throughout the movie and I’d have liked it if maybe she has been a bit more of a threat. Besides that, I can’t really think of anything else that I didn’t like.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, Equestria Girls: Friendship Games is a great follow-up to Rainbow Rocks. Fans of the previous films will get a lot of enjoyment out of it as it delivers plenty of solid laughs and noteworthy songs. You might even want to stay till the end for a peek at what’s to come. The DVD/Blu-ray doesn’t come out until October 13th, but if you happen to find it playing on Discovery Family, go ahead and give it a watch. You’ll enjoy your time with it.Friendship Games review 5

 Final Rating: 4/5 Watch it!

Awesome news for Xbox and PC owners.

Today, Project Spark announced that starting Monday October 5th, the game will be going completely free to play. This means that not only will you be able to download the game for free, but it also means that any previous DLC content that would previously require in game purchases will now also be free add-ons! This means that right out of the gate you can start creating to your hearts content.

Unfortunately, this does mean that since the game will no longer have an in game store, that there are no plans for future adventure or creation bundles after the update. Sadly, this means that fans eagerly awaiting a 2nd episode of Conker’s Big Reunion can sadly forget about seeing it.  If you’d like to find out more info on what this update entails, you can check out the full list of changes right here.  Will you be trying out Project Spark now that it’s completely free? What kind of games are you planning on creating?

F-Zero fans have had it very rough.

The last game in the series was F-Zero Climax for the Gameboy Advance that came out nearly 11 years years ago. The worst part about it was that it didn’t even get released in America! (So, stop your whining Metroid fans; it’s only 5 years since your last game.) The closest we’ve got to a new game was in the form of a minigame for Nintendo Land and a couple of tracks, outfits, and cars in Mario Kart 8 via DLC and Amiibo integration. Even Miyamoto himself has admitted that they don’t know what to do with the series anymore.

While we’re not getting a new F-Zero anytime soon, Shin’en Multimedia doesn’t want you to forget it’s legacy. Later this year, they’ll be releasing their own take on the Futuristic Racing genre titled FAST Racing Neo. This weekend, while at EGX, Shin’en revealed that they’ll be adding in a special Hero Mode for the game that’s reminiscent of the F-Zero games of old.  This mode can only be unlocked by completing previous speed classes in campaign mode. There’ll be a couple of tweaks to this mode as well, such as having your boost meter function as a shield, and having to finish in first in order to continue.

If you’re interested in how the game plays, check out this excerpt from Nintendo’s Treehouse Live segment from this year’s E3. FAST Racing Neo will be boosting it’s way onto the Nintendo E-shop sometime at the end of the year.

Super Mario Maker is an amazingly creative game.

While the item selection could be expanded  upon, droves of people have found many creative ways to use it to their advantage. You’ll almost never see a course that looks the same, or a course that you won’t have fun playing (unless you’re someone like me who’s already gotten sick of the endless Automatic Mario levels, that is). So the question is: What are some really awesome levels that are really creative with how they use the course tools, or courses that are just really fun to play through?

Every Friday starting today, I’ll be choosing a course from the game that I think really shows the creativity of what people can do using Super Mario Maker. First up, Captain Toad By Evin CG.

Captain toad 1

For those who don’t know, this level is based off of the incredibly popular side game in Super Mario 3D World (also based off the full game released last year.) In this level, you play as Captain Toad, and will try to navigate your way to the power star at the end of the level. A very fun aspect about this level is the fact that it borrows many gameplay elements from the actual game. From climbing vines, and not being able to jump, (jumping makes you hit an invisible block with Boos in them) it’s great to see the source material being used properly. This makes the level feel very authentic, and can really make you think at points throughout the level. Captain toad 2

There are also a good handful of secrets to find. Can you find all 3 gems (substituted as 1-UPS) in the level? There are plenty of other secrets and fun surprises too, but I’ll save those for when you try it out yourself. If you would like to try out this level here’s the course ID: 1548-0000-003E-EF15. If you’d like to recommend a course, then comment below and I just might feature it!

Until next week, keep playing and creating awesome levels!

Looking for more Super Mario Maker? Our review is right here!

Super Mario Maker has been out for a little over two weeks and is showing no signs of slowing down.

It seems like all around the world people are engulfed in the Mario Maker Phenomenon. YouTube channel 8-Bit Gaming,  known most for their theories on the popular horror game Five Nights At Freddy’s, Have decided to branch out a bit and tackle some Nintendo games such as Yoshi’s Woolly World, and of course, Super Mario Maker. In  their newest video, they put out a call to Takashi Tezuka and the other Mario Maker devs challenging them to complete their own hand made course. The team of course accepted the challenge and the end result is pretty funny. Take a look at the video below.

This is also a great time to announce that I’ll be testing out a new segment for the site called: Mario Maker Course Of The Week. Every Friday, I’ll highlight a level from Super Mario Maker that I think has a clever idea to it or is just fun to play. If anyone has a suggestion for a level you think should be highlighted, make sure to comment the name of the course and it’s course I.D in the comments below.

Happy Talk Like a Pirate Day everyone!

This year, Rare has decided to go all out by trying to make their new game Sea of Thieves as authentic as possible. This includes them hiring real life pirates as consultants for the game. The end results pretty much turns out how you expect it to, but it’s still fun to watch.

As of right now, Sea of Thieves does not have a release date, but is presumed to launch in 2016 for Xbox One and Windows 10.

It’s hard to believe that the Super Mario Bros. Series has been platforming into our living rooms for thirty years.

Released on September 13th 1985, Super Mario Bros. has gone to become one of the most popular video games to date. It even went on to sell over 40 million copies and spawn endless spin-offs and sequels that continue to this very day. Even Mario himself has become one of the most recognizable icons in history. Flash forward 30 years, and fans are finally getting one of their biggest wishes granted with Super Mario Maker.Mario Maker Title Screen

Super Mario Maker is Nintendo’s love letter to the Mario series and fans alike, allowing anyone to make their own 2D Mario levels from scratch. What really makes this game special is that not only can you make your own levels from the original Mario, but you can also choose art styles from its most popular iterations. These include classics such as Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and even New Super Mario Bros. U. There’s also a wealth of locations to choose between including above ground, underground, underwater, ghost house, air ship, and bowser’s castle.

Today’s Fuel Economy -By Josh

The tool layout is very simple to pick up and use. All you do is tap on an item you want to use and you can summon that item at will. Most items are usable in all art styles excluding a couple of items. These include the goomba shoe in Mario 1 and Mario 3, turning into Yoshi eggs in Mario World and Mario U, and the Mystery Mushroom (more on that in a second) turning into each art styles specific flying item. Mario 3 has the Raccoon Leaf, Mario World has the Cape, and Mario U has the Propeller Hat.

Skull Ride Glide -By Brian
Skull Ride Glide -By Brian

One of the most fun additions to Super Mario Maker has to be the inclusion of the Mystery Mushroom. By tapping a corresponding Amiibo, or completing a run in 100 Mario Challenge (A mode where you adventure through randomly generated user levels) you can unlock a special character outfit for Mario to use in the original Super Mario Bros. theme. Want to go through a level as Donkey Kong, Samus, Kirby, or even Megaman? Well now you can! Just playing 100 Mario Challenge to see what character you’ll unlock next will have you occupied for a long time to come considering that there’s about 100 different costumes.Mario Maker review 4

Now to the part everyone’s been waiting for: the user generated content. Content is separated by 100 Mario Challenge, Courses, and Makers. Courses can be sorted by featured, top rated, and up & coming. They can also be searched by difficulty, but not name, location or time period even though the options are there. This is one of the biggest flaws in the game since if you want to play a specific level from someone, you have to be either following them, or enter a 16 digit code. I’m really hoping for an update that can add a better search engine because as it is right now, it’s kind of useless.

Super Mario Maker Levels

Even aside from the search engine problems I still have a couple of minor complaints with the title. For starters, Even though there’s a nice amount of objects and enemies to use, there are still some really iconic items missing from the game. These include not being able to make slopes, as well as there being no Desert or Forest levels as well as the exclusion of popular enemies such as the Angry Sun and the Charging Chucks. There’s also a problem with content creation item unlocks.

The game starts you off with only one row of objects and enemies, and from there you have to gradually create for 5 minutes for 9 days in a row, or spend time nonstop creating every 15 minutes. While I understand this is done to prevent younger children from getting too overwhelmed with the pallet, it would have been nice to at least have an option to start with everything.  This option could have allowed veterans to jump straight into the more advanced techniques.

Mario Maker review 5

Overall, Super Mario Maker is one of the Wii U’s best offerings right beside Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Super Smash Bros, Bayonetta 2 and more! Creating levels is very easy and the tools are very accessible to all ages. The complaints I have about it aren’t enough to ruin the experience and I can see myself already planning more stages to create and play. Even if you aren’t a creator, there are still a boat load of original and creative levels that’ll keep you playing for months and even years to come (perhaps I’ll highlight  some of my favorites sometime.)

Well, this is a nice surprise.

Nintendo has just announced that a stage based off Super Mario Maker will be MAKING (sorry for the pun) it’s way to Super Smash Bros For Nintendo 3DS & Wii U by the end of the month. It’s unknown if the stage will be free or not, but the terrain and art style will be randomly generated ever time you play it. To see this stage in action, check out the awesome trailer below.

Things have been hard on Nintendo since the passing of President and CEO Satoru Iwata.

Ever since his untimely death mid July, many people have been wondering who  will be his replacement. While Shigeru Miyamoto and Genyo Takeda were temporarily appointed Heads of the company for about a month, the company has finally decided on a new head.

As of Today, Tatsumi Kimishima has been appointed as the new president of the company. If you’re worried about someone completely unknown taking over the reigns of the company, have no fear! He may not sound familiar, but before becoming president, Kimishima was once the head of Nintendo of America from 2002 to 2006 until he handed reigns over to Current NOA president Reggie Fils-Aime. Afterwards, he became managing director  of the company.

In a recent talk with japanese publication, The Nikkei, Kimishima states that he has been elected for only a year so far. He also continues to comment on the future of the company saying that he has no plans to change what Iwata had already started for the company such as their new venture into mobile.

While it’s still hard to believe that Mr. Iwata is gone, all of us here at Geekscape are positive that Mr. Kimishima will do a fine job running the company.

Super Mario Maker just released yesterday and we’ve already seen some crazy secrets the game holds. We all like finding secrets and unlockables in games, but what if sometimes you just don’t want to wait to discover things? Want to see all the different costumes and secrets in the game but don’t have the time? Well, the folks over at That One Video Gamer have you covered. They have recently just released a video on their let’s play channel showcasing all the different kinds of costumes you can find in the game, as well as some other hidden surprises. Check it out below! What are your favorite secrets and costumes in the game so far?

It’s been a while since we’ve had a Nintendo Direct this year.

Last time we had one was June 14th when Nintendo showcased new DLC for Super Smash Bros For Wii U/3DS. Since then, the directs have gone into somewhat of a hibernation due to the tragic and unexpected passing of President and CEO Satoru Iwata. All this could be possibly changing soon.

Nintendo of America has just recently made a job posting looking to hire a Motion Graphics Artist. Among the description it mentions that the company is looking to hire someone who has experience in editing Audio/Video for things such as TV commercials, game trailers, Nintendo Direct, web content, etc.

If you’re interested in seeing the mentioned job posting, you can find it right HERE.  Would you like to see Nintendo Directs come back soon?

Not to be outdone by today’s amazing news about Pikmin 4There’s still a bit more Nintendo in today’s news.

Michel Ancel, the creator of Rayman, has recently created his own Mario level to challenge Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka themselves to beat it. The level entitled Pac-Mario is an obvious, but really cool tribute to the classic arcade version of Pac-man which is one of Mr. Miyamoto’s favorite games.

If you’d like to see the level in action just head down below to check it out! If you’d also like to see more game creators making Mario levels, how about watching Playtonic Games Donkey Kong Country tribute level

This past Thursday, U.K game company, Playtonic Games, visited Nintendo for an event.

The Ex-Rare studio partnered with Nintendo U.K to host a special live stream for the upcoming Wii U game Super Mario Maker. During the stream, they showed off their own Donkey Kong Country inspired level while also having plenty of more fun.

While they haven’t uploaded the full stream yet, there are a couple of video excerpts of it on Nintendo U.K’S YouTube channel which you can check out hereSuper Mario Maker launches for Wii U on September 11th.

Oh Konami, what on earth happened to you? What used to be a once great and revolutionary company that helped change the face of gaming has now become an empty former shell of what it originally was.

Everything from them splitting ways with MGS creator Hideo Kojima, to announcing a full on aggressive assault to only make mobile and pachinko games, Konami seems to have all but abandon their fans and common sense.

To continue in the path of recent blunders, the company seems to have found a new hobby, hating fan art. Just recently, a fan going by the twitter name @all_snake decided to draw some fan art of the recently released game, even catching eye of Kojima himself. Obviously Konami wasn’t too happy with people enjoying their products and showing their love for it, because after a couple of days, the image was no more.

While I wish I could be surprised by this, it’s just sad to see a company near and dear to many fall from grace so hard. I guess it’s only a matter of time before Konami starts suing people for playing the game itself.

Earlier today, Capcom announced that the next installment in the Ace Attorney series is already in development and well under way. While no release date has been announced yet, Shacknews has confirmed that Capcom will indeed be  bringing Ace Attorney 6 to the west. It’s also worth mentioning that there will be a playable demo of  the game this year at Tokyo Game Show. Check out some of these screenshots of  the game. Are you  excited for Ace Attorney 6?

shovel amiibo

Oh boy, Nintendo fans are in for quite a treat come this holiday season.

Earlier this morning, retail chain GAME prematurely announced the existence of an official Shovel Knight amiibo. GAME has since pulled the tweet, but this being the internet, it has easily found its way back online.

The Figurine will be released on November 27th and work with both the 3DS and Wii U versions of Shovel Knight. It also says that future games by Yacht Club Games will also use the recently announced amiibo, but nothing was specified on what content it’ll add.

Are you excited for this amiibo?

Fans eagerly waiting for the highly anticipated Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows DLC can rest easy. Today, the good people at Yacht Club Games  have given us a brand new trailer to admire.  Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows is a DLC update to the 2014 indie hit Shovel Knight.  This additional content allows you to play as one of Shovel Knight’s foes, Plague Knight. Unlike Shovel Knight, Plague Knight will play very differently. While there’s still no concrete release, the video promises that the update will release soon and be FREE for everyone who owns the game. Check out the enchanting trailer below and get hype! Will you be playing Plague of Shadows when it launches?

Exciting times for fans of Banjo Kazooie and Rare alike! Not only has the release of Rare Replay and development of Sea of Thieves signaled a return for the legendary company, but to top it off, they’ve been revealing Behind the Scenes secrets on some their most beloved properties. Yesterday, the company revealed that they are hard at work on more Behind the Scenes documentaries. One is on an unreleased co-op mode for Banjo Tooie entitled Bottles Revenge. Bottles Revenge was a co-op mode that would have one person playing as a devil version of Bottles the Mole; as he possessed enemies in order to stop Banjo and Kazooie from defeating Gruntilda. It was even going to allow the player to take control of bosses, but the mode was sadly abandoned. Oddly Enough the mode is still accessible using a Game Shark, but bosses can’t be controlled(video link of Bottles Revenge being played at the end of article.). The other video is a bit more interesting, as that one will focus on an unreleased 2.5D prototype of the original game. There are even hints that we could possibly get our first glance at gameplay of Dream, which was the first conceptual prototype of what would become Banjo Kazooie. Are  you excited for these videos?

Super Mario Maker doesn’t release until the 11th of September, but that won’t stop people from showing new footage of it. Thanks to Midwest Professor we can now take an extensive look at a small handful of amiibo costumes that will be appearing in the game. These can be be obtained by either scanning in a compatible amiibo or by beating the 100 Man Mario Challenge mode. It should also be noted that the game will support over 50 amiibo at launch!!! Are you excited for the release of Super Mario Maker? Which amiibo costume will you use first?

That’s right. This morning on twitter, Nintendo revealed to fans when and what the next Splatfest for Splatoon will be. The Splatfest will start next Friday August 28th, and in a surprising twist, will be sponsored by Hasbro and feature Autobots VS. Decepticons. This is awesome in a number of ways, one of which opens the doors for more sponsored Splatfests like this one. Which side are you on?Splatfest 1

Sierra is a company near and dear to my heart. Besides Rare, they were my first introduction into the world of videogames. Founded in 1980, by Ken and Roberta Williams, Sierra would go on to create such classic adventure and puzzle games such as The Incredible Machine, Leisure Suit Larry, King’s Quest, and many more. Sadly, the company has been missing for the last 6 years. Fear not though, because just last year, Sierra has re-opened their doors and is ready to start making new memories with a brand new generation of gamers. This brings us to one of their first new outings, Shiftlings.

sierra

This Adventure Puzzle game is about 2 alien janitors who are connected together by a cord and can inflate themselves at will. Together, they will travel across 5 different planets and 50 levels to overcome all odds. Oh, did I also mention that they’re being recorded as part of a reality TV show called Shiftlings? Weird, huh? So, can Shiftlings re-capture the fun and quirkiness that Sierra games of old had?

Art Style & Sound

Art style in the game is very nice. All the backgrounds for all the different levels and worlds are nicely textured and extremely bright and colorful. Even in the most basic asteroid space level the colors pop out nicely and really help make the levels and worlds feel different. Sound effects are very animated; making the game feel like it’s straight out of a Saturday morning cartoon. To further help with that is the music, which is very ambient and help sets the tone that these 2 janitors are all alone on these planets. There are also cut scenes, which are very well animated and voice acted. They help break up the game in certain sections and provide just enough laughs to keep you going to the next.

WVW69iSuqzEwk3jixQ

Gameplay & Negatives

The gameplay in Shiftlings is easy to learn, but difficult to master. At any point in a level you can switch which characters to move and which one to inflate. You can also move both of them at once in order to bounce across large gaps and collect hidden collectible cola bottles in each level. As you steadily progress, the game starts introducing new mechanics such as doors, rotating platforms, and many more. And what kind of Sierra game would this be if there weren’t a variety of death animations? Everything from getting electrocuted, to being incinerated by flames and you’ll want to die as many times as you can. You also have a narrator voice commenting on each of the levels you play and that really helps cement the fact that this is a reality TV show.

WVW69iSunGEpvpcIJL

While the game excels in many places mentioned above, there are some problems with it. One of the biggest problems is its difficulty. There are some cases where it can ramp up a little too fast, and that may cause novice players to get a little too frustrated with the game. The controls can also be a bit confusing when first starting the game, but after a while you will settle into them.

Final Thoughts & Rating

Shiftlings is a very smart, if not difficult, puzzle game that really re-captures the magic of what made Sierra such an unusual and fun company. Although I thoroughly enjoyed the game and recommend it to expert puzzle fans, I’m not quite sure if novice players would find it easily accessible. In this case I’d recommend downloading a demo of it since it’s on all major platforms with the exception of Wii U (sorry Nintendo fans the E-shop doesn’t have a demo of it.) If you still like it afterwards, then I whole heartedly recommend picking the game up.

FINAL RATING: 3/5. Try it first, then buy it.

Well this is some sad news. Nintendo of America Treehouse localiser Chris Pranger appeared last week on a podcast called Part-Time Gamers to talk about his work at the company. During the podcast, Pranger talked about why certain games weren’t being localized among other things. Seems like Nintendo didn’t take too kindly to all the press he was getting  and decided to fire him. While reasons for this are unknown and haven’t been specified yet, it’s sad to see someones hard work and love for the company he works for be his downfall. We wish Mr. Pranger the best and hope that he can find another exciting and fulfilling job.

DeNA mobile

Exciting news for Nintendo fans. According to twitter user @serkantoto, Japanese mobile company DeNA have revealed that in their Q1 report that they are currently in plans to finally reveal their first joint project with the Kyoto based company. This was announced and reported on back in March, but now it seems like we could be seeing an official reveal soon. Are you excited for this partnership?

You heard that right. Deadline has reported that in just 2 days after premiering on Tuesday the 4th, that Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F was able to gross over $3.75 million on it’s first 2 days of opening. It should be noted this is a lot considering that the movie is being shown in less than 900 theaters and only has 1 showtime per day. Furthermore, it’s a little embarrassing for this weeks Fantastic 4 Reboot. Expected to originally make $50 million  during the weekend, it looks like the film and Fox themselves are in for a rude awakening as they only managed to make an abysmal $2.7 million on opening day. Will you be seeing Resurrection F this week? It should be noted that we actually reviewed Resurrection F a couple of months back and enjoyed it despite a couple of odd things with the film. Are you going to watch Resurrection F this week?

One of the first games I remember playing as a kid was 1994’s Donkey Kong Country for the Super Nintendo. I spent countless months playing the game alongside my older brother. We’d constantly spend every day after school trying to find every bonus room we could while taking turns trying to beat those now infamous mine cart levels. All those memories and more were thanks to a then fairly new company called Rareware.

Replay collection
All 30 games in Rare Replay in one image. That’s a lot of games.

This year, Rare (now owned by Microsoft) is celebrating their 30th anniversary of being in the video game business. To celebrate this amazing milestone, they’ve gone and compiled their 30 best games from the past 30 years, all into one package for the shockingly low value of $30. Everything from their spectrum games like Jetpac and Sabrewulf, to their newest outings such as Viva Piñata and Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. To sweeten the deal even further, they’ve gone and added a challenge mode where you can play specific parts of classic era rare games in order to earn stamps. Those can then be used to watch exclusive behind the scene interviews with some of the brilliant minds responsible for these most beloved franchises.

This time, instead of doing a normal review where I talk about all aspects of the game, I thought I’d try something different with Rare Replay seeing as how a lot of people have already played these games before. So for this review, I’ll be going through my favorite games of each key Rare era. Let’s begin.

Spectrum Era: Jetpac

This was probably one of the trickiest categories to choose because the Spectrum games shown in this collection are really odd. Most of them require an immense amount of fast-twitch skill and trial and error. That is, except for Jetpac. Jetpac is the Spectrum game that you’ll be playing the most out of the collection, and there’s a reason for that. The gameplay is super simple, and plays more like an arcade game than anything else. Your goal in the game is to find the missing pieces of your rocket ship so you can get home. Each level randomizes the layout and enemy structure so the experience is always fresh and new. You’ll be spending countless hours blasting away at aliens while you’re trying to get the last tank of gas into your rocket for liftoff.Jetpac

Nes Era: Battletoads

As much as Rare Replay has introduced me to new NES titles from their library, Battletoads is still the pinnacle of Rare’s early Nintendo years before they became the 2nd Party we all know and love. Once you start the game, you get dropped into the action immediately, but unlike the spectrum games, you don’t feel vulnerable. Since it’s a beat em up, you already instinctively know how the game works. Run, jump, and beat em up! Not only is the first level a great introduction, but it slowly teaches you about the game so you can be prepared for the increase in difficulty after each level. The difficulty of the game dose increase fast, but it never seems unfair or not fun. especially since Rare has added a new feature that softens the blow. In any game up until the end of the NES/Battletoads Arcade era, you have the option of holding down the left trigger, which activates a rewind feature that you can use to rewind your game for up to 10 seconds. Never again will you struggle with the infamous turbo tunnel. Don’t let this feature fool you though, because this game is still as tough today as it was back then. 10 Seconds may save you one time, but it may be too late for others.

N64 Era: Conker’s Bad Fur Day

Coming into the N64 era, there was a lot to consider. This is the era that Rare really shined the brightest in terms of quality and quantity. While many are eager to crown Banjo Kazooie as the top spot, this is not the case with me. In my opinion, Conker outshines every other title in this era to prove that over 10 years later this once overlooked gem has become one of the most infamous and controversial games of its time. Everything from foul mouthed animals and barn equipment, to a pile of singing poo and a giant sunflower with rather large “stigmas”, really set up a game that in no way wants you to take it seriously. Not to mention the introduction of “Context Sensitive” gameplay where you conveniently find and use tools that you need in that moment of time. Throw in a fun 4 player split screen multiplayer with plenty of game modes to keep you interested, and Conker’s Bad Fur Day easily earns the title of the best N64 era Rare game.

Xbox Era: Viva Piñata

Out of all of the eras and games in this collection, the Xbox era stuck out to me the most from all the others. This comes from the fact that I had constantly heard about the games in this era, but never had the chance to play them. The only game from this section that I had played was Grabbed by the Ghoulies, which I think is an underrated gem. I was also eager to finally try out the mixed received Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. In the end, it ended up being a toss-up between N&B and Viva Piñata. Nuts & Bolts was going to be crowned winner, but sadly the game was still suffering from some pretty bad frame dropping in the hub world. I was hoping for them to fix this problem when I played it earlier this year at comic con (hopefully it gets fixed in a future patch). I’m happy to say that Viva Piñata is one of the most pleasant surprises I’ve ever played. All you do is create a garden for growing and harvesting piñatas, but it’s got that rare charm that makes it a step above the rest. Never have I spent so much time watering plants and tilling my land in order to attract the most beautiful and rare Piñata creatures. Top that off with classic rare humor and an absolute mouthwatering score from composer Grant Kirkhope and you have yourself one of the best and most addicting games to come out of the company PERIOD.

Final thoughts

At the end of the day, I can’t say enough good things about Rare Replay that everyone else has already said. This is possibly the best collection of games ever compiled. $30 is a steal of a price for how much value that both gamers, and non-gamers will be getting out of it. If you have an Xbox One, you owe it to yourself to buy this amazing package and see what all the hubbub is about.
