We have no idea what we’ll be seeing in today’s unusual afternoon Nintendo Direct, but as the huge Smash Bros. fans that we are, we’re damned excited.

The show starts in just a few minutes at 3PM PST, so watch it below, and let us know what you think of the announcements.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrWL4EuCp5E&feature=share

For those of you who are unaware, The Lego Movie has been killing it at the box office, and with good reason. The amazing film (from the team that brought us the short-lived but amazing cartoon Clone High USA) is hilarious, charming and sends a great message to little kids. The film has dominated the box office so successfully that it has already been approved for a sequel.

In the next week we will also see the release of Peabody and Mr. Sherman, a film based on the beloved Rocky & Bulwinkle characters. It looks more entertaining than 2003’s disappointing The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle; it’s also been announced that sometime next year we will be seeing a film inspired by R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps series.

It’s not uncommon for you to hear people complaining about how Hollywood is out of ideas. The box office tends to be limited on original films, instead favoring remakes, reboots, sequels and adaptations. Right now it seems Hollywood’s favorite thing to adapt is our childhood. This doesn’t have to be a bad thing though. In fact, if all the adaptations are as entertaining as The Lego Movie than this is actually a very good thing.

So let’s take a look through the things that made childhood so great. Nothing was better than growing up in the 90‘s. Let’s remember the toys, games, books and TV shows that made growing up so great. There was a time that we loved the idea of dinosaurs with guns on their heads, teenagers who could turn into animals and a worm in a supersuit. Let’s get excited that maybe, just maybe, one of them will be the next big Hollywood franchise.

10. Toxic Crusaders

TOXIC_CRUSADERS_by_Makinita

The late 80s/early 90s were a weird time for kids’ cartoons. For some unexplainable reason, TV programmers took a look at hard R movies like Robocop, Rambo and Police Academy and thought “we could totally make this into a cartoon for kids.” It was during these cocaine-fueled pitch meetings that someone saw the potential of Troma’s Toxic Avenger.

Toxic Avengers (or Toxie to his fans) is the face of Troma Pictures, a company with such colorful film titles as Surf Nazis Must Die and Chopper Chicks in Zombietown. The first superhero from New Jersey made his debut in 1985’s Toxic Avenger, a film filled with sex, drugs and a ten-year-old’s head being crushed by a tire. Despite it’s dark origins, The Toxic Crusaders ended up being one of the better cartoons of the 90s.

They took the wackiness of Toxic Avenger, added a bunch of great new characters like NoZone (who has a giant nose) and Headbanger (a two headed man), and tied it together with a “save the environment” message. Basically it was Captain Planet, if the Planeteers were sideshow freaks and their rings brought a green blob of a man (who fights crime with a talking mop).

In Toxie, creator Lloyd Kaufman’s book “All I Needed To Know About Filmmaking I Learned From The Toxic Avenger” Kaufman reveals that New Line had signed a contract to make a Crusaders’ film but (according to Kaufman) it was simply to scare the owners of TNMT to give them rights to make a third film at a cheaper price.

Kaufman has discussed putting some of the characters in the upcoming Toxic Avenger 5 but I’d much rather see them make a feature film (or even hand it off to someone like James Gunn).

9. The Noid

avoid-the-noid

The 90’s was a very strange time to be a kid but a great time to be in advertising. For whatever unexplainable reason, the 90’s was this magical time where advertisements could somehow turn into products themselves. The California Raisins had multiple TV specials, a cartoon and tons of action figures, Kool-Aid Man got a video game, and 7-Up’s Cool Spot inspired two different video games. But my personal favorite mascot was always Domino’s Noid.

“Avoid the Noid” was not only a slogan for the popular mascot but the name of a video game (released in 1989) where you delivered pizzas in 30 minutes or less to buildings filled with Noids trying to steal your pizza. This game was popular enough for a sequel, released in 1990. Even more confusing was that just two years ago a third video game was released.

In 2011 the Noid made a few re-emergences on T-shirts and on Domino’s Facebook. The time has never been better to bring the bunny-eared character back for a film. While it’s obvious that studios will want to do a computer animated film, the Noid has always been Claymation and should stay that way.

8. Street Sharks

StreetSharks

It seemed that immediately after Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles became a mega smash hit every company tried to find some way to jump on with any ideas to try to get a hit toy-line. The best show was the pretty obvious rip-off Street Sharks.

The show must have been pitched by someone going “Shark Week is almost as popular as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles… let’s play with that idea.”

Street Sharks is actually quite dark compared to TMNT. In Turtles it’s four regular turtles that get slime on them and they transform into the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In Street Sharks, four kids are transformed into the half-man/half-shark creations. I’m not sure why but that’s more unsettling.

These teenage shark kids fight against the evil Dr. Piranoid (a scientist who’s genes were spliced with a Piranha) and his mutant lobster and marlin henchmen.

The Street Sharks did lead to various action figures, comic books and an arcade wack-a-mole game to name a few things, but it never got a movie. For a brief period of time there was even a few catch phrases that caught on at the recess yard. How totally Jawesome would it be to see a film about four half man/half shark creators battling a man with a piranha face shoot with practical effects.

7. Are You Afraid Of The Dark

Are-You-afraid-of-the-dark

It’s been reported that a Goosebumps movie is in the works. From what most reports have stated though this movie adaptation will be mostly inspired by the books but not a direct adaptation of any of the novels. If you were to re-read the original Goosebumps books you’ll notice that most of them do not hold up for readers over the age of ten, so depending on their demographic this could be a good or bad thing.

The real shame is that Goosebumps could have worked as a decent anthology film. In fact, the only other way to do a decent Goosebumps movie would be to adapt Night of the Living Dummy into a feature… beyond that most of the books aren’t very memorable (as stated earlier).

Are you Afraid of the Dark?, on the other hand, had a fair amount of genuinely eerie tales. Plus the general premise of the show lends itself beautifully to the anthology film format.

If you’re not familiar with this classic SNICK series each episode began with members of the Midnight Society (a group of high school horror writers) gathering around a campfire in the woods telling scary stories. Each week a different person told a story of horror. You can easily do three or four decent scary stories in that exact format.

Even if producers didn’t want to do an anthology film there’s still a ton of great episodes that would translate to film beautifully (the classic Zeebo the Clown episode comes to mind).

As crazy as this might sound you could pull of the movie with an R-rating. Since this film was a big introduction to horror films for kids in the 90’s the key demographic would be horror fans in their late 20’s.

6. The Tick

The_Tick_Wallpaper_by_emucoupons

Few cartoons went over my head as a kid more than The Tick. I thought it was just a bizarre cartoon about a dumb superhero. It wasn’t until years later when reruns began to appear on Comedy Central late at night that I figured out the appeal.

The Tick began in 1986 as a satire of the cliche comic book hero. The character remained mostly underground as a strictly indie comic. That all changed in 1994. FOX adapted the anarchic comic book parody into a Saturday Morning cartoon series which put The Tick on the radar for tons of kids.  It had a successful three season run before cancellation.

In 2001, FOX again adapted the Blue Bug of Justice with the absolute perfect casting of Patrick Warburton. The show was far from perfect but it definitely deserved a longer life than the eight episodes that FOX gave it.

A movie adaptation of The Tick would be incredible. Patrick Warburton could even still play the titular character. With the popularity of comic book movies right now there’s never been a better time to try to do The Tick correctly.

5. Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past

Zelda-linktothepast

Without competition, Link is the second most recognized Nintendo mascot. There are few things more exciting then when Nintendo releases a new Zelda game but for me (and many others) it’s impossible not to mention Link to the Past as one of best video games ever made.

The popular series was adapted to everything from comic books to a tv series and a collection of soundtrack albums. But it never had a film adaptation. In the 90s there was a huge movement of video game film adaptations, everything from side scrollers like Double Dragon and Super Mario Bros. to fighting games like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. Every single one of those adaptations was a failure on either a critical or financial standpoint (and sometimes both). It’s because of these bad experiences (specifically with Super Mario Bros.) that NES has constantly been against any attempts at a Legend of Zelda movie.

This is flawed logic since Zelda has more of a plot drive game than any of those films that were adapted. A Link to the Past has a fantastic plot and could easily be split into two separate films (and we all know Hollywood loves when they can split something into two movies).

When I was a kid I always wanted to make a movie inspired by the game. Since my father raised me on the films of Ray Harryhausen so I always dreamed that it would be a live-action movie with claymation monsters (as unlikely as that would be). Regardless I think it’s time Nintendo allowed a Zelda game to be made and hopefully show the world it is possible to make the occasionally good Video-Game Film Adaptation.

4. The Head

TheHead-Episode1-640x360

There are few things from the 90’s more insanely unique than MTV’s animation. Despite being the king of music videos in the 80’s, by the 90’s they were beginning to expand into various other TV shows. They had game shows, they had reality TV and even their own animation branch. Some of the more popular shows were Beavis & Butthead, Daria and  Aeon Flux but one of the most bizarre shows was MTV Oddities.

Oddities had two series. One was the comic-book inspired The Maxx but the one I always connected with was The Head.

The Head was created by Eric Fogel and told the story of a college student named Jim who wakes up one morning with his head grown to massive proportions. After desperately trying to figure out why this has happened, he discovers a purple alien named Roy has turned his head into his home. Roy is out to stop another alien sent to destroy the human race.

It’s only with the help of a support group for “Human Anomalies” that Jim and Roy are able to destroy the other alien and save the world.

Recently, Alex Winter has come back after spending almost two decades out of the public spotlight after the failure of the cult classic Freaked. I would love to see the entire creative team behind Freaked got back to make a Hard-R film adaptation of this gritty MTV cult classic.

3. Animorphs

ANimorphs

There were two massive book series’ aimed at kids in the 90‘s. The first one was Goosebumps, the other was  K.A. Applegate’s sci-fi action series Animorphs. The series told the tale of five teenagers who discover a dying alien in an abandoned lot. The alien informs them of another alien race that parasitically takes control of creatures on planets leading to their ultimate domination. Just before dying the alien gives them all the power to morph into any creature from which they ‘acquire’ the DNA.

The series eventually became a TV series on Nickelodeon and while it was a decent enough adaptation it was shot on such a low budget (being on a TV series for kids) that the special effects come off laughable now. It’s a mediocre presentation of a well-written book series.

The book series has a lot of dark moments throughout it which Nickelodeon was only willing to slightly touch upon. In this day and age films like The Hunger Games aren’t afraid to tackle dark themes like children literally fighting for their lives. The time has never been better than right now to relaunch the Animorphs series and what better outlet than a film franchise.

2. Mighty Max

MightyMax

In 1992, one of the greatest toys for a young male ever was released. Mighty Max was the male counterpoint of Polly Pocket. They mostly involved minature playsets referred to as “Horror Heads” and “Doom Zones”. When you opened up these playsets each one had a uniquely different world of secret passageways and various creatures.

Mighty Max was depicted as a small child in a white shirt and red hat with a giant M on it. He was constantly fighting monsters and other horror-themed creatures. The toy line became so popular that it launched a TV series as well a SNES and Sega video game.

In this day and age kids action films have lost their sense of danger. Growing up as kids in the 80’s and 90’s we had movies and TV shows where if our main characters screwed up they would die. In 2014, the worst thing to happen to the lead character in a kids movie/TV show that means they might not be popular in school. A Mighty Max movie would be an awesome throwback to the films we grew up on like The Goonies and Monster Squad. It’s time this generation of kids gets something even half as awesome as the things our generation had.

1. Earthworm Jim

Earthworm_Jim

In 1994, the world was given a gift from a man named Doug TenNapel. That gift was an acid trip in the form of a video game named Earthworm Jim.

Earthworm Jim was the story of of an earthworm named Jim (go figure) who finds a robotic super suit and begins fighting evil. Every level is so brilliant, bizarre and fun that it was impossible for the game to not be a success. Critics adored the game (and it’s sequel) while praising its humor, designs and platforms. Audiences also loved it.

The video game was so insanely popular that it got multiple video game sequels, it’s own cartoon series (which ran two seasons), a toy line and two one-shot comic books. As recently as 2008 there was even talk of a new TV series, but that has yet to move into pre-production.

Earthworm Jim is that right mix of anarchic comedy, bizarre backdrops and hilarious characters like Psy-Crow and The Evil Queen Pulsating, Bloated, Festering, Sweaty, Pus-filled, Malformed Slug-for-a-Butt  that would make a great CGI film. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs & The Lego Movie) could be the perfect comedy team to deliver a memorable film experience that you’d want to repeat again and again.

To coincide with the Japanese release of the The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, the latest Smash Bros update has revealed Princess Zelda as the next confirmed fighter for Nintendo’s most anticipated release.

A staple since Melee on the GameCube, it’s no surprise that the keeper of the Triforce of Wisdom would make her return to the battle. Using a variety of magic attacks, Zelda has traditionally been a keep away character with a few situational close range tricks at her disposal. Her close range prowess comes mostly from her alter ego, Sheik, whom she can transform to mid battle.

However, this latest batch of screenshots are 100% Sheik free. Does this mean her transformation has been axed? Or will Sheik be shown on a later date with the focus squarely on Zelda for today? Competitively, Sheik is far more popular than Zelda, so I highly doubt that she’s gone. At the same time, Sheik hasn’t been in a Zelda game since Ocarina of Time, which was the character’s only mainline appearance. Still, I chalk it up to the reveal being tied to a new, Sheik-less Zelda game, so I’ll be patiently awaiting THAT reveal later on.

Check out this new gallery of Zelda in action, including a potentially new attack involving the suits of armor from Phantom Hourglass, and be sure to check back with Geekscape for all of your Smash Bros. news. The title is slated for a 2014 release.

Briefly: Just catching up on some news after this weekend’s fantastic Comikaze Expo, and this piece definitely caught my eye.

Nintendo has announced plans to debut an awesome lineup of new shows for the Fall season. Five series have been announced, including shorts based on The Legend of Zelda and Pikmin (which also reminds me that I still need to pick up Pikmin 3).

Here’s Nintendo’s description of the new shows (including Pendleton Ward’s fantastic Bravest Warriors):

The Legend of Zelda: The Misadventures of Link: This original series of comedic shorts shows Link, the series’ star, in a new and hysterical light. His surroundings will be familiar to fans of the series, since the shorts are based on The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD game for the Wii U console.

Pikmin Nature Documentaries: These “nature documentaries” explore the wonderful world of the tiny Pikmin. The animations, highlighted by dramatic voiceover work, are a tongue-in-cheek take on safari nature shows.

Bravest Warriors: The latest hit show created by Pendleton Ward, the mind behind Adventure Time, follows four teenage heroes-for-hire as they warp through galaxies to save adorable aliens and their worlds using the power of their emotions. The series is produced by Frederator Studios and launched on the Cartoon Hangover channel on YouTube. New episodes of Bravest Warriors will appear every Friday on Nintendo Video.

Wildheart Riukiu: This new series of 3D shorts comes from the creator of Meat or Die, which has already amassed more than 5 million views on Nintendo Video. Wildheart Riukiu incorporates charming 16-bit graphics with some not-so-charming, but hilarious, characters. Think ninja puppets.

Bee and PuppyCat: A Cartoon Hangover Shorts fan favorite, this two-part series by Natasha Allegri follows Bee, an out-of-work 20-something who has a life-changing collision with a mysterious creature she names PuppyCat.

I’ve never opened up Nintendo Video in the almost-year that I’ve owned my 3DS. I’ll definitely be checking these out though. Which show are you most excited for? Sound out below!

MisadventuresofLink

Briefly: Nintendo today debuted a brand-new trailer for their upcoming 3DS title, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.

The video does a great job of showing off some of the game’s new mechanics (including the new mirrored world, Lorule, and the neat 2D Link). Seeing the TriForce appear onscreen just as in did in A Link to the Past is a great touch at the end of the trailer.

I can’t wait to pick up Pokémon X or Y, but A Link Between Worlds is really the 3DS title that I’ve been waiting for. My Vita does nothing but gather dust, and it seems as though my 3DS keeps getting better and better (though I would like to upgrade to an XL model soon).

Watch the new trailer below, and let us know how excited you are! The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds hits stores on November 22nd!

It appears that both Nintendo and Capcom wanted to make the wait for Monster Hunter 4 that much more agonizing.

Today, during Japan’s Monster Hunter 4 Nintendo Direct, the two Felyne companions were not only wielding hammers, but were adorned in Mario and Luigi costumes as well. Not to be left out, the hunter will also have the ability to dress up as Link from The Legend of Zelda–complete with a Hylian shield and Master Sword! The gear can be unlocked by completing downloadable quests Japanese players can access from select 7-11 locations. No word if the downloadable content will hit the United States (let alone a release date for Monster Hunter 4), but it’s safe to assume Monster Hunter fans in the west will be treated to both, due to the success of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.

Check out the video below and let us know what you think. What other Nintendo-inspired costumes and weapons would you love to see in Monster Hunter 4?

Announced via an advertisement earlier today, Nintendo will be knocking $50 off the MSRP of both the Wii U Deluxe Set and the limited-edition Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker Wii U Deluxe Set next month. Set to go on sale September 20 for $299, the limited-edition Wind Waker Wii U Deluxe Set comes with a 32gb Wii U console, a Zelda-themed GamePad, a digital download code for a copy of The Legend of Zelda; Wind Waker HD, and a hardcover copy of Hyrule Historia from Dark Horse Publishing.

Anyone with the slightest urge to own one of these should seriously consider pre-ordering it soon, for Nintendo limited-edition bundles tend to have an extremely short shelf life. All this for $299?! Yes!

After years of anticipation, Super Smash Bros was finally revealed for 3DS and Wii U. Between the Animal Crossing villager and Mega Man joining the cast, if you are a Smash fan and weren’t jumping out of your seat at these reveals, then you have no soul!

BUT!… with all of the excitement floating around at these monster reveals, it was easy to miss some of the more subtle hints at the changes coming to the popular fighter. After hitting repeat more times than Selena Gomez, there are tons of smaller reveals hidden throughout the three minutes worth of video. Let’s take a look back and see what we can spot!

Once the 3DS version comes on screen, notice how all of the levels are based off of portable games, (Ocarina of Time 3D, Spirit Tracks, Mario 3D Land and Nintendogs for example,) whereas the Wii U version only had console stages. Does this mean each version will have separate stages, or was this just to signify that one was portable and one was a home console release?

Speaking of Spirit Tracks, Toon Link is seen in his conductor outfit at the front of the train. For some fighting games, characters in the background signify that they won’t be playable. Does that mean Toon Link is out? Or a console exclusive character if the train stage is indeed 3DS exclusive? Or will he just disappear from the background if he’s being used?

Pit from Kid Icarus made his Smash debut in Brawl, but since then, he’s received a new game with so a weapon loadout so huge it would make Borderlands jealous. Problem is, none of those weapons were represented aside from the bow. Thankfully, that’s changing, because at 1:17, Pit can clearly be seen using the Upperdash Arm, which obviously wasn’t in the last entry. As a huge fan of Uprising, this was one of my biggest requests, and I’m glad to see Pit getting an upgrade.

Pit’s power of flight also looks changed, with a diagonal jump instead of a continuous flying ability that starts straight up. If this is the case, it looks like our favorite angel might have tons of new tricks. The big question is: will this move set be from the ground up or will it integrate his old moves? And if he is brand new, what happens to his old move set? I’d hate to see it disappear, but I can’t realistically see another slot being taken up by say… Dark Pit just so the old moves can come back, though I wouldn’t  be opposed to it.

Samus seems to have a suit of armor closely resembling her Other M suit. Her Final Smash also seems to let her aim a small amount compared to the last game where it just went straightforward. Huh… I wonder if she’s going to have to ask for permission before she can use it?

Donkey Kong’s spinning punch that he’s had since the first game looked tilted. Has the classic move been tweaked?

Bowser was seen doing a few new normal attacks, including a low drop kick. Seems like he’s getting a move makeover as well, which is fine since he was exactly the same in the last two games.

Many of the fights are taking place in what appears to be a Skyward Sword stage. Combining this with the Spirit Tracks and Gerudo Valley stages, and that’s at least three new Zelda stages between the two versions. What can I say? The series is popular!

Another stage is what looks like a boxing ring. Is this simply the new Battlefield and Final Destination stage that abandons stage gimmicks for a flat battleground meant for straight up battles? Or is this hinting at the inclusion of another franchise down the line? Here’s hoping for Little Mac!

The Animal Crossing Villager’s move set makes him seem oblivious that he’s even fighting. He’s seen using his Balloon Fighter hat to fly, dropping bowling balls, cutting down trees, digging holes and even grabbing projectiles and putting them in his pocket. He’s already looking like one of the more interesting characters move wise. I can’t wait to try him out!

Mega Man’s reveal had a few peculiarities of its own. First, his multiple boss moves were featured, but will they all be special moves like we’re used to? Most likely, they’re integrated both into his normal and special attacks, but it’s still worth mentioning.

Mega’s reveal was ushered in with the phrase, “Mega Man joins the battle!” The previous games used the phrases, “joins the Melee” and “joins the Brawl.” Since I doubt the games will be simply titled Smash Bros Wii U and Smash Bros 3DS, what are the chances that the final title will be Smash Bros BattleSince Villager had a different phrase, I’m almost positive this won’t be the case, but it would be a good way to sneak it in if this were to become the name.

When Mega Man dies, rather than the usual flash that accompanies a fall, his trademark explosion triggers instead. This matches his obvious NES style movement, including his idle pose, his jump and his appearance while taking damage.

Rush is seen using his Rush Coil ability. I’m guessing this is Mega Man’s Up-B attack that helps him spring back up, (much like Sonic.) Will Rush be integrated into any of his other moves?

Right at the end, the trailer teases Mega Man going up against the Yellow Devil boss. While this confirms at least one third party boss, does this mean the return of a single player mode like Subspace in Brawl? Is this simply an event challenge for the Blue Bomber? Or am I over-examining it and Yellow Devil is a stage hazard?

So after meticulously watching the video over and over again, this is the best that I’ve got. Are any of my observations off? Did you find any of your own that I missed? And how awesome is it that Pit has near limitless potential with an Uprising themed move set!? All these questions just make the wait going into 2014 that much harder! You know the drill. Watch the trailer and let us know below!

First announced back in February, the highly anticipated (at least by me) rerelease of both The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages is less than two weeks away! Both titles will launch on the 3DS eShop on May 30th (as we learned back in April), and during today’s Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo revealed a special deal for early adopters.

The regular price of each title is $5.99, but from May 30th to June 20th, each game will cost you a cool $4.99. Watch the trailer for the rerelease below, and let us know if you’ll be picking these up!

Just announced not that long ago, Nintendo has announced that they will be releasing a new Legend of Zelda game for the 3DS, and it is set in the ” Link To The Past” universe! Is it a sequel? A prequel? OR A prequel to the sequel? We do not know, hell it doesn’t even have an English title yet! What we do know is that there is some sick in-game footy just sneaked out by Games Radar. CHECK IT OUT!

My favorite top down Zelda game was Link’s Awakening DX, and this bit of footage has made me SUPER excited for this!

Did I mention that it was a good day to be a Nintendo fan?

Big news was aplenty at today’s Nintendo Direct presentation. First, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages are coming to the 3DS eShop this May. Second, EarthBound (FREAKING EarthBound!) is being rereleased on the Wii U Virtual Console later this year. Third, Pikmin 3 finally got a release date (August 4th).

How could things get any better? How about a follow-up to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past?

You read that right. The oft-rumoured, oft-desired, yet never-existent sequel to 1992’s most beloved adventure game is currently in development over at the big N. The game will feature the same top-down look and feel (though this time in glorious 3D, and without sprites) as the original game did, but with an all-new plot, and plenty of fresh mechanics.

Nintendo released a cool trailer for the game (also available in 3D via the 3DS eShop) showing us what we can expect. The (currently untitled) Link to the Past follow-up is slated to hit the 3DS later in 2013. Watch the trailer below, and let us know what you think!

Back in February, Nintendo announced the digital rerelease of the acclaimed portable Zelda adventures, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons, and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages. The Capcom developed Game Boy Color titles originally released in 2001 to much fanfare, and while Japan only at first, Nintendo assured fans that the rerelease would eventually be hitting North American consoles too.

We now know just when we’ll be able to jump back into Holodrum and Labrynna, and it’s just over a month away. Mark your calendars: May 30th is the day you’ll be able to relive these amazing adventures.

I couldn’t be more excited, how about you?

Today’s Nintendo Direct presentation featured plenty of other great news too. Look for more coverage coming later today!

You’ll have to watch this morning’s Nintendo Direct to really feel the excitement (embedded below), but essentially, it’s a fantastic day to be a Nintendo fan, and a wonderful time to be a Wii U owner.

First, let’s get the non-game news out of the way. Now, I love my Wii U, but of course, like anything, the thing isn’t perfect. My main issue (which rears its ugly head every time the console is turned on) is just how slow the damn thing can be. It seems to take forever to move between menus on this system, and if you’re trying to return to the menu from inside a game, well, you may as well hit the restart button.

Nintendo knows about the speed issues, and is working to fix them. Two system updates are on the way (one due this Spring, one this Summer) that will address these problems, along with adding new functionality to the machine.

Almost more exciting than any new game.
Almost more exciting than any new game. Well, not really.

As Nintendo mentioned previously, Miiverse (which everyone seems to love) is still coming for smartphones. In the Spring, you’ll be able to access the service via your phone’s browser, but dedicated applications are in the works, so that you’re always just a tap away.

Along with the upcoming Spring update is (YES!) Virtual Console functionality for Wii U. The service will (strangely) launch with just NES and SNES titles, while GBA games will be added sometime in the future (hmmm… what about all of the other stuff on the Wii VC?). Pricing will be equivalent to the Wii Virtual Console Versions, and (lamely) if you’ve already purchased a title, it’ll cost you another $1 (or $1.50 for SNES) to get it on your Wii U. Hopefully for that, they come with some added functionality (fully customizable controls have already been revealed), and the ability to play the games on JUST the GamePad.

Now, the good stuff.

First, ZeldaIn a completely unexpected piece of news… we’re getting two of them! Remember how AMAZING The Wind Waker looked when it came out all the way back in 2003? Well it’s about to get a lot prettier: this Fall, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is going HD. Featuring improvements to gameplay and (hugely) to graphics, you’ll also be able to play this one on just the GamePad. This looks like is an absolute must buy.

Wow... Wow... Wow...
Wow… Wow… Wow…

It was also revealed that a Wii U specific Zelda title is in the works, set to “rethink the conventions of Zelda”. This one won’t be ready for some time however, so Wind Waker HD will have to do for now.

Everyone’s favourite Italian has two titles in the works for the Wii U. A new version of Mario Kart is in development, as well as a new Mario platformer, which will also be playable in 3D. Both games are set to be revealed at this year’s E3 convention (which hopefully means a holiday release).

The team behind the underrated Kirby’s Epic Yarn is at it again, but this time it’s Yoshi’s turn. The director of Yoshi’s Island and Yoshi’s Story is supervising the development of this one, which is Yoshi’s first starring role since 1998. Yarn Yoshi looks pretty damn… well, pretty.

We all knew that Pikmin 3 was coming, and Nintendo kindly treated us to some new screenshots during the presentation. They look beautiful, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the game. Check them out in the gallery below! A ‘camera’ mode was also revealed for the game, which lets you shoot from the perspective of the Pikmin, using what else but the Wii U gamepad. You can then share them to MiiVerse. No word yet on whether or not you’ll be able to apply cheesy filters after the fact.

Those are the biggest titles, but a few others were revealed via trailer, including what appears to be a Fire Emblem / Shin Megami Tensei crossover, a new title from Monolith Soft, and a new trailer for the cool looking The Wonderful 101. Check them out below.

Game and Wario and a new Smash Bros. were also mentioned, but need to be further in development before being officially revealed.

So what do you think Wii U owners? Excited? Shout out below!

Warner Brothers Interactive just sent out some VERY cool news regarding the upcoming Scribblenauts Unlimited. If the game wasn’t already anticipated enough, this is going to make it a hell of a lot more so for Nintendo fans.

Exclusive to the Wii U version of the game, you’ll be able to summon characters and items from BOTH the Mario and Zelda franchises! I wonder if this means you’ll be able to mess around with these characters using the object editor!

Scribblenauts Unlimited is set to release with the Wii U on November 18th. The game will also be available for 3DS and PC (though without the Nintendo characters and items).

From the press release:

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announces that its highly anticipated Scribblenauts Unlimited game will feature even more than ever before, with Nintendo themed bonus content.  Players can summon dozens of their favorite characters and items from the Mario™ and Legend of Zelda™ franchises exclusively in the Wii U™ version of the game.

Players will delight in producing fantastical and sometimes hilarious interactions between the Mario and Legend of Zelda characters and objects, alongside everyone’s favorite word-wielding Scribblenauts adventurer, Maxwell. Discovered Nintendo characters and objects will behave in the fun and fantastical ways they do in their respective game worlds.

Looking forward to the game? I was extremely addicted to the earlier titles when they released, and will be sure to pick this one up at launch!

Looks like the Wii U, long known to be due this holiday season, is finally getting an official release date!

Nintendo announced on their official Japanese twitter account that an announcement is forthcoming. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime released this video shortly afterwards, inviting us to check out the North American pricing and release date at 10AM eastern.

I’m really looking forward to this! I’m a sucker for new Nintendo consoles (though I foolishly purchased a Vita instead of a 3DS, what a mistake), and I can’t wait to hear what I’ll be shelling out for this one (hopefully something similar to the Wii’s original pricing!).

Let’s get some reviews going! I watch “Ruby Sparks” and say ‘forget writing up a girl… let’s write up a different ending’! X-Men First Class sequel gets a fantastic name! Geekscape casts the Fantastic Four reboot for Fox! FX refuses to give up on “Powers”! I definitely give up on the 3DS title “Planet Crashers” but it leads me back into the arms of the original Zelda! Oh sweet, sweet adventurous, exploring original Zelda arms!
