Briefly: This one’s been rumoured since back in August, but that rumour has just been confirmed.

Elizbeth Olsen is Scarlet Witch in The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Jackson touched on Age of Ultron, and ultimately broke the news about the casting, stating that ”I know we’re shooting in London, that James Spader is Ultron and going to be the bad guy, and that we added Ms. [Elizabeth] Olsen [who will play the Scarlet Witch], but I don’t know what she’s doing, if she’s on the inside or the outside. I haven’t seen a script.”

Jackson also states that filming on Age of Ultron won’t start until March of 2014.

Are you looking forward to seeing Olsen in the role? She’s been pretty fantastic in everything that I’ve seen her in! Is there anyone else you’d rather have seen play Scarlet Witch? Sound out below!

Olsen

“The world is full of wonders.”

On the surface, Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD treads where Heroes, Alphas, and even the 70s’ Tomorrow People have dared. In practice, it’s a gleaming hour of pure fun tumbling through the fully realized Marvel universe to bring to life the potential of a new and exciting corner of superheroes. Only these heroes are less super, and more suited, as the premise (and all the ads) points out. It’s about the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division, which has been seen in glimpses in previous movies and at the forefront of The Avengers. The concept itself — a ragtag team of ‘who would’ve thought it’ agents and non-agents working together to fight the odds — does not blow away on its own. It will be the cases and the characters that make it.

However, peppered with quick one-liners and quiet visual gags, Agents of SHIELD redeems its flagging concept with its unending sense of humor and the subtle delivery of twists. Rather than throw them in your face with act breaks and music of impending doom, SHIELD chooses to roll just as naturally into its secrets as it does into everything else, helping you roll with the flow instead of be distracted by gags.

“This is the new world.”

In the realm of tie-ins, SHIELD does a complete job fitting itself into the niche of Marvel movie-verse. From direct references to billionaires in flying suits (said in the show as if it’s not crazy at all) to super-soldier serum to the ultimate question of is this team going to be able to act like a team: SHIELD delivers a Marvel super rollercoaster. Add in references to “with great power” and a Clean Slate concept, and the show’s not only self-referential but gleefully self-aware (as well as rival-aware). It’s grounded in both our world and theirs, when Ward mentions cosplay girls surrounding Stark Tower, allowing us to experience what would be an extraordinary thing (superheroes!) in a way we can understand (geekery and fanning!).

How is Coulson alive? Will the show ever solve that mystery?
How is Coulson alive? Will the show ever solve that mystery?

It’s interesting to note that the superheroes — the crowning Heroes of New York! — are considered to be at a security level unequal to knowing that their beloved Coulson is alive. This is highly indicative of the kind of operation Nick Fury runs. People only know what he believes they should know, and it casts an intriguing, darker light when you remember that this is an operation run by humans deciding what’s best, and they use the superheroes like tools; assets to be respected, but ultimately steered. Behavior like this has gotten villains in the past in trouble, and it would be glorious to see its effect on SHIELD in the future.

“We’re not exactly a team.”

It’s not uncommon for the Whedons to turn typical concepts on their heads, but SHIELD is only halfway there due to a slightly underdeveloped cast of team members and a lukewarm plot that’s a mix of Luke Cage’s origin story and Iron Man’s Extemis storyline. The strong members of the cast naturally include Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson, whose consummately overworked everyman is tempered perfectly by his quick and quiet delivery of wit. He can stand his own against superheroes and unruly teammates alike, with the occasional splash of badassery — like his ability to duck like a mofo; though, really, who didn’t expect those car doors to come flying off? Ming-Na Wen follows, as Melinda May, and Coulson’s second-in-command (they don’t say as much, but come on). Her quiet no-nonsense attitude is different than Coulson’s half-smile pleasantness, but she harbors the same ‘this is why I’m in SHIELD’ skills beneath. She was also introduced with the best possible hook: a seemingly uninjured, and capable, agent choosing a desk — something Coulson or Maria Hill would kill to get away from. We look forward to knowing more about her simply from that.

Melinda May was a great contrast to Coulson.
Melinda May was a great contrast to Coulson.

The rest of the crew suffers from less introduction — or too much introduction. Brett Dalton as Agent Ward is brought in as our point-of-view, letting us see him in action before he’s introduced to the story. At first, he’s the typical vigilante-type agent: the lone-wolf who’s too cool for the world. However, in getting to see Coulson systematically break him down with his differing tactics is pleasant enough to hopefully keep him from becoming just impossibly annoying with his snobbery and disagreeing. He might be an effective foil for Coulson, should he learn to operate on his level, but, for now, we can hope he just won’t get in his own way and that any reveals for him in the future, though not hinted at yet, are intriguing.

Chloe Bennet plays Skye. Let’s pause on that for a moment because… Skye. Also, because I originally mistyped it as ‘Skype’. Skype suffers the most from unflagging tropes: the sassy, overly skilled hacker, who has a quip for everything and nobody can possibly be better than her. It takes a certain kind of person to let you feel okay watching your favorites get taken down a notch, and Skye doesn’t quite fulfill that before besting Coulson, and SHIELD, at encryption. Luckily, Coulson has a few other things up his sleeve, but Skye, though she possesses a few quality lines (including that cough-and-miss-it comment about cosplay), trends dangerously towards the cliche. The hope for her is that now that her ‘recruitment’ is out of the way, she can begin to blossom. And hopefully not into some kind of double-crosser, thanks to whatever techno-gadget she shoved into her bra.

Yep, Skype was pretty annoying.
Yep, Skye was pretty annoying.

Ian de Caestecker and Elizabeth Henstridge play Fitzsimmons. Yes, Fitzsimmons the unit. This joke is made early on, but it’s unfortunately prophetic, as the two don’t manage to separate from each other much in terms of character development or usefulness. The power of bickering accents aside, they are also cloaked in a sense of typical characterization they must shed — and likely will, if Whedon’s past is any indication. So we’ll give them another episode or two before any full analysis.

We’ll end with a shout-out to Ron Glass, and the opening of the floor to you, to agree, disagree, or just do what internet commentators do.

Let’s all just agree on one thing: Lola’s not making it through the season.

Don't touch her.
Don’t touch her.

Briefly: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered last night to a whopping 11.9 million viewers, making it the LARGEST television drama premiere in almost four years (surpassed only by ABC’s own V a few years back).

As it turns out, most of the footage we’d seen up to last night was contained within the explosive (and sometimes dry) premiere episode, leaving all of us wondering what would come next for the newly assembled don’t-call-it-a-team.

Fear not! ABC has debuted a new trailer for the series, showing off some of the action that’s set to hit in subsequent episodes. It looks like a lot of fun, but hopefully the show can solve some of the issues present with the pilot episode.

Take a look at the new trailer below, and let us know what you thought of last night’s premiere!

Clark Gregg reprises his role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel’s feature films as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. Coulson’s team consists of Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage, Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) expert pilot and martial artist, Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker); brilliant engineer and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) genius bio-chemist. Joining them on their journey into mystery is new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet). From Executive Producers Joss Whedon (“Marvel’s The Avengers,” ”Buffy the Vampire Slayer”); Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” pilot co-writers (“Dollhouse,” “Dr.Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”); Jeffrey Bell (“Angel,” “Alias”); and Jeph Loeb (“Smallville”) comes Marvel’s first TV series. “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television.

Briefly: The day is finally here folks. Marvel tonight steps into live-action television in a post-Avengers world with Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and we couldn’t be more excited.

Neither could the rest of the world, apparently. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. already has over one million fans on Facebook, and that number is sure to grow after tonight’s Joss Whedon directed premiere. Late last night, ABC debuted a new trailer for the series, fresh with some new footage that should get everyone hot and bothered for tonight’s episode.

Take a look at the preview below and let us know if you’re excited! Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premieres at 8PM! Coulson LIVES!

Briefly: The latest star to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe has just been revealed.

It’s Lincoln‘s James Spader, and he’ll appear in The Avengers: Age of Ultron as Ultron himself.

Spader was an excellent addition to last year’s Spielberg period drama, and looks simply fantastic in NBC’s upcoming series The Blacklist. Do you think he has what it takes to pull off Ultron? Anyone else you’d rather see in the role? Sound out below!

Spader, of course, will be joining the yet-uncast Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch as newcomers to the Avengers sequel. Anyone else you’d like to see in the film?

Briefly: After an interesting twitter campaign yesterday that had fans retweeting by the thousands, ABC has debuted a flashy new poster for their upcoming series, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (that title is never going to get shorter, is it?).

The poster really doesn’t reveal anything new about the series, or better prepare us for the September 24th premiere, but seeing as the series begins in just over a month, it’s definitely time for ABC to get marketing. This poster game definitely did its duty too, as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was one of yesterday’s top trending topics.

Take a look at the new poster below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the show! Again, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premieres on September 24th!

Just because Iron Man 3 didn’t turn out as well as we’d all hoped, doesn’t mean that we wanted to see Robert Downey Jr. retire from the role. It’s been rumoured for some time that, since his contract was complete, the prominent actor would be leaving the Marvel cinematic universe.

You can put those worries to rest. Marvel just announced that Robert Downey Jr. is Iron Man… at least for The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3.

That’s his whole contract. Two new Avengers films, so it looks like we won’t be seeing another solo Iron Man flick any time soon. Take a look at the press release below, and let us know how you feel about the news!

“I am Iron Man.”

Tony Stark’s famous closing line to the very first Iron Man film takes on new life today as Marvel is pleased to announce the signing of Robert Downey, Jr. to reprise the role of the “billionaire, genius, playboy, philanthropist.”

Under the two-picture agreement, Downey will star as Tony Stark/Iron Man in “Marvel’s The Avengers 2” and “Marvel’s The Avengers 3.” Downey is represented at CAA by Bryan Lourd, Jim Toth and Matt Leaf and by his attorneys Tom Hansen and Stewart Brookman of the firm Hansen Jacobson.

Downey, Jr.’s last two Marvel films, 2012’s “Marvel’s The Avengers” and this year’s “Iron Man 3,” rank as two of the top five grossing films of all time, collectively earning over $2.7 billion worldwide to date.

“Marvel’s The Avengers 2” is being written and directed by Joss Whedon. Featuring favorites from the first Avengers film and new Marvel characters never before seen on the big screen, “Marvel’s The Avengers 2” is slated to begin production in March 2014 and open in theaters May 1, 2015.

Thrilled by this mega announcement, Marvelites? Well, be sure you stay glued to Marvel.com because in the coming days and weeks and months, Marvel.com will be FIRST in the world to reveal additional casting updates, new characters coming to Marvel movies and so much more — directly from the most secret meetings at Marvel! You wouldn’t want to miss out on that now, would you?!

IronMan

Worried that with his contract coming to an end it would mean that Robert Downey Jr. would be hanging up his helmet? It’s definitely going to be hard to see any other actor fill the role after he finally does but don’t worry just yet. RDJ appeared on The Daily Show and revealed to the audience that he is currently renegotiating his contract at the moment with Marvel which means we may see a few more outings with him as the armored avenger in the future. Check out the interview below as well as a short clip from the film.

Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Remember last week when Joss Whedon hinted at two new characters (“a brother/sister act”) that would be appearing in the upcoming sequel to The Avengers? Well, Entertainment Weekly report that their upcoming issue will feature an extensive look at Marvel Studios upcoming “Phase Two” films as well as going on to confirm what many had earlier speculated:

Ultimate Comics X-Men 7

“Some online rumors turn out to be true, however. A source confirms to EW that the twin characters Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch will be joining The Avengers 2, which Whedon hinted at recently when he said he was writing a brother-sister duo into the movie. Feige maintains a poker face on that scoop, saying only: “I’m not confirming or denying. The draft could change six months from now.”

The rights to these two characters were revealed awhile back to be up to whichever studio used theme first between Marvel and Fox and it appears Marvel got to them first. Will they be mutants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or have the origins of their powers altered a bit for the film universe? We’re going to have to wait and find out but this is definitely very exciting news.

While attending the Hollywood red carpet premiere of Shane Black’s Iron Man 3, Yahoo Movies caught up with Joss Whedon and a took a few minutes to discuss the highly-anticipated 2015 sequel to The Avengers.

“I have actually finished a draft, we’re in a very good place. It’s going really well, eventually somebody will explain to me that it’s not. But I’ve been writing, meeting with actors, and we’re starting to storyboard and all the preliminary processes. This is the part where it’s all still fun. It’s an evolution, and that goes on all through shooting and it never stops. I’ve done enough shows and movies to be comfortable with that. You do come to a point where we all agree …‘Oh, I’ve got these two characters, two of my favorite characters from the comic books; a brother/sister act. They’re in the movie, that’s exciting.’ You lock certain things in. But then there’s a certain fluidity when you’re working with Robert [Downey Jr.]. He’s going to want to do something new on the day, and you’re going to want him to, because it’s going to be funny. So you always keep yourself open. I try not to think of it as topping The Avengers, I try to think of this as its own movie.”

“And by the way, Shane [Black] not helping! Iron Man 3 not helping! I see this and said, ‘Aw, man, he really got it right!’ The pressure continues! When Tony sees another superhero, he increases his swagger. Tony, he sees Thor, and he says, ‘Yeah, I got a suit of muscles that big. I invented it! Oh, you can pick up a hammer? You’re so special!’ He sees it as a challenge! He loves it.”

The most interesting point of this conversation was the two new character additions that Whedon mentioned. If he’s talking about actual siblings, could we see the inclusion of Wanda & Pietro Maximoff, better known as Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver? It’s already been revealed that their rights are up in the air and whichever studio, Fox or Marvel, uses them first gets first dibs. However, there are a handful of other characters that this could be implying as well. Ah, the many possibilities!

We’ve heard plenty of rumors regarding the lead role in Relativity’s upcoming remake of The Crow. There’s now official word that actor Tom Hiddleston is in talks to star as Eric Draven, the role made famous in Alex Proyas 1994 cult classic by Brandon Lee, in F. Javier Gutiérrez’s (Before The Fall) remake/re-imagining of the film based of the comic series by James O’Barr. Draven is a resurrected murder victim who rises from the grave a year after his death in order to exact revenge on the thugs who murdered both him and his fiance.

Deadtime03

The script for the film was written by Cliff Dorman (Warrior) and is scheduled to go into production this fall. Hiddleston has met with the producers of the film and even sent them a make-up test for that he did on his own in London. The actor will undergo a professional make-up test in the next few days for the film to see if he has the right look for the role.

With Shane Black’s Iron Man 3 ready to hit theaters internationally, Marvel & Disney will soon begin their marketing for the next Phase Two film: The Alan Taylor director Thor: The Dark World. Of course, the trailer for the film will be attached to Iron Man 3… but word is that the trailer will be debuting online even earlier than that.

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has revealed an approved running time of 1 minute and 41 seconds for the film’s first trailer and we can expect to see it debut online April 23rd, just a week from today. And similar to their early marketing campaign for Iron Man 3, we can probably expect to see the first teaser posters and images from the film to begin popping up over the next week.

Last night during the MTV Movie Awards another action packed brand new spot for Shane Black’s highly-anticipated Iron Man 3 debuted. The spot titled “Nightmares” features plenty of The Mandarin’s Extremis soldiers as well as giving us a few new shots of Stephanie Szostak’s mystery character in the film.

Marvel Studios has had a Black Panther movie in the works for quite some time and it now looks like there’s a chance that they may be finally moving forward with bringing the character to the big screen. Actor Morris Chestnut posted an image to his Facebook earlier today as well as the following tweet:

Could this be an indication that Marvel Studios is looking at actors to play the character? Or could the actor just be brushing up on his reading?

We’re just under a month from the release of Shane Black’s Iron Man 3 and Marvel has now released the first clip from the highly-anticipated film. The clip titled “Holiday Greeting” features Tony Stark sending a little message to The Mandarin.

The first film in Marvel Studios “Phase Two” hasn’t even hit theaters yet but that isn’t keeping them from getting prepared for their big conclusion. The studio will bring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes across the pond and begin shooting at Pinewood-Shepperton in early 2014, with pre-production for the film most likely get underway later this year. This isn’t the first time that Marvel has shot across seas, a good chunk of Thor: The Dark World takes place in London and James Gunn’s Guardians Of The Galaxy will be taking advantage of Shepperton Studios when filming on the movie begins in a few months. With plot details for the film being kept under wraps, it’s pretty hard to speculate just what they’re going to be filming when they travel across the pond and begin production.

We caught up with Joss Whedon and Clark Gregg at SXSW and talked with the two about the upcoming pilot for Marvel & ABC’s S.H.I.E.L.D. Now, while they couldn’t reveal to us too much about the project, we did finally find out who would win in a fight between Agent Coulson and Nick Fury.

You can catch the pilot for Marvel & ABC’s S.H.I.E.L.D. this summer. Also make sure to check out our review of Whedon and Gregg’s latest film, Much Ado About Nothing, here.

Lionsgate today released the official trailer for Joss Whedon’s next film, Much Ado About Nothing. That title may be familiar to you, as the film is actually an adaptation of the William Shakespeare play of the same name.

We all know just how busy Whedon is these days, so its nice to see him get away from his Marvel work and do something on a slightly smaller scale. Watch the trailer for Much Ado About Nothing Below, and let us know what you think! The film hits theatres on June 7th!

Leonato (Clark Gregg), the governor of Messina, is visited by his friend Don Pedro (Reed Diamond) who is returning from a victorious campaign against his rebellious brother Don John (Sean Maher). Accompanying Don Pedro are two of his officers: Benedick (Alexis Denisof) and Claudio (Fran Kranz). While in Messina, Claudio falls for Leonato’s daughter Hero (Jillian Morgese), while Benedick verbally spars with Beatrice (Amy Acker), the governor’s niece. The budding love between Claudio and Hero prompts Don Pedro to arrange with Leonato for a marriage. In the days leading up to the ceremony, Don Pedro, with the help of Leonato, Claudio and Hero, attempts to sport with Benedick and Beatrice in an effort to trick the two into falling in love. Meanwhile, the villainous Don John, with the help of his allies: Conrade (Riki Lindhome) and Borachio (Spencer Treat Clark), plots against the happy couple, using his own form of trickery to try to destroy the marriage before it begins. A series of comic and tragic events continue to keep the two couples from truly finding happiness, but then again perhaps love may prevail.

There was quite a bit of buzz when it was rumored that Marvel was planning on doing a live-action adaptation of Planet Hulk as part of their “Phase Three” plans. It now appears according to Bruce Banner himself, actor Mark Ruffalo, that Marvel currently has no plans at the moment for a stand alone Hulk film. Ruffalo tweeted:

Hulk-The-Avengers-movie-image

While this doesn’t mean that there’s no chance of ever seeing a Planet Hulk film, it definitely does put the possibility of it being a part of Marvel’s “Phase Three” plans further in doubt. There’s definitely a chance that Marvel could indeed have someone working on a Planet Hulk script as an option that they could pursue, but it doesn’t necessarily mean we will ever see it. We’re just going to have to wait until 2015 to see what Marvel has in store for the future of the green behemoth.

Marvel has just released the second full-length theatrical trailer for Shane Black’s highly-anticipated Iron Man 3! The trailer is jam packed full of new and exciting footage to get you even more amped up for the film’s release just under two months from now.

Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds.

Iron Man 3 suits up in theaters May 3rd, 2013.

Most geeks will remember Mark Webber as playing Stephen Stills in Edgar Wright’s ‘Scott Pilgrim VS The World’, but on this episode we barely talk Scott Pilgrim at all (sorry)! We spend most of it talking about Mark’s career, his new movie ‘The End of Love’ and his life before acting. How did he avoid becoming a Hollywood jerk? How has raising a child changed his view of video games and Star Wars? Plus, would he ever turn down a superhero or Star Wars movie? This interview rolls deep so get ready for it! And of course, my wife Laura calls in to give me some grief!

‘The End of Love’ love opens  in theaters today in Los Angeles and New York. For more information, visit the film’s website.

Marvel’s The Avengers will be re-assembling again very soon. This time it will happen on the Oscar Stage. Cast mates Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner and Mark Ruffalo will all assemble once again to present an award. Sadly, they couldn’t get Scarlett Johansson, Clark Gregg, Maria Hill and Chris Hemsworth to complete the full lineup. But then again that’s a lot of people to have one one stage. Pretty much as soon as word broke that Disney had acquired Lucasfilm and that we’d see Star Wars: Episode VII coming to theaters in 2015, fans have been talking about a desire to see Joss Whedon helm the next chapter. That was until they remembered that Whedon would be directing the sequel to a little movie called The Avengers. Well, don’t worry. You weren’t the only one who forgot about it. At first Whedon thought “Maybe I should see if I can get the job”, before remembering he already was a little tied up.

“I’m as angry as you should be. When I heard that I was like, ‘I wonder… no, I really can’t do that. Oh, I already have a job.’ I wouldn’t clear the Avengers. I’m having so much fun with that sequel right now, just with the script, that I couldn’t imagine not doing it.”

Whedon is currently also working on Marvel and ABC’s S.H.I.E.L.D. television series at the moment and told CNN that the show is reminding him how “taxing television can be”.

“I’d forgotten how much work TV was so I’m cranky at everybody all the time. But it’s really fun. We have a beautiful ensemble and we’re having so much fun coming up with the stories. It really is like working at Marvel Comics, which was a dream of mine as a kid because this little book ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ that not that many people read …[The show’s] not as big as the movies [and] we’re telling smaller stories but we get to do it more often. “

Deadline reports that Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige has been named as “Motion Picture Showman Of The Year” by the Publicists of the International Cinematographers Guild. If you’re somehow unfamiliar with that name, since joining Marvel in 2000, Feige has overseen all of the creative aspects of the company’s film productions. He became President of Marvel Studios in 2007 and most recently produced Marvel’s The Avengers, which was the biggest movie of the year.

Feige will be honored at the 50th Annual Awards Luncheon on February 22nd. Awards committee chairman Henri Bollinger stated:

“Kevin Feige’s understanding and appreciation of publicity and promotion in the role of a movie’s success has led to a string of blockbuster feature films adapted from the pages of Marvel comic books during the past ten years.”

It’s truly a well deserved award and congratulations on winning it Mr. Feige.

“I LOVED that in comics, you could read all your individual heroes and you could follow their adventures, then every few years there’d be a crossover event that would bring them all together, in one book.

Then they’d go their separate ways again, have their own adventures, and a few years later, they’d get back together again.

I want to replicate that in movies.”
