Briefly: Destiny developer Bungie yesterday released a fantastic new developer diary for their highly anticipated shooter, titled ‘Out Here in the Wild’.

The diary takes us, well, into the wild of Destiny, and shows off many of the environments and weapons we’ll be seeing in the game. If you’re as excited for Destiny as I am, you’ll definitely want to take a look at this.

Watch the diary below, and let us know what you think! Destiny hits PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC sometime in 2014.

During Sony’s E3 press conference last night, Bungie took to the stage to finally show off gameplay from their anticipated next title, Destiny. The game is a sci-fi first-person shooter on a much larger scale than anything we’ve ever seen before, and is designed to evolve and expand over years of time.

Details are still few on the game itself, but if these trailers are any indication, Destiny is set to be a system seller. Watch the new gameplay videos below, and let us know what you think! Destiny drops sometime in 2014!

Last week, Bethesda announced a new chapter in the acclaimed Wolfenstein franchise. Just like the game’s first trailer, a batch of newly released screenshots reveal little about the project, but they at least show us how damn pretty it looks.

Wolfenstein: The New Order definitely looks next-gen! Take a look at the images below, and let us know what you think! The game will hit retail this holiday season.

What a freaking great trailer.

Bethesda today unveiled the announcement trailer for the next instalment in the Wolfenstein franchise, Wolfenstein: The New Order. The game is set to release this holiday season, and will hit PC, Xbox 360, PS3, and next-gen consoles.

I was a huge fan of 2009’s Wolfensteinand with the new title coming from MachineGames, The New Order is definitely something I’ll be keeping my eye on.

Check out the trailer below, and let us know what you think!

Activision began teasing the next installment in the Call Of Duty franchise on the game’s official site the other day and now the official title and release date for the game have been revealed via a leaked promotional poster. Call Of Duty: Ghosts, which could quite possibly be a prequel game featuring fan-favorite character Simon “Ghost” Riley from Modern Warfare 2, will be released on November 5th.  You can check out the leaked promotional poster below.

Earlier this week, I purchased and last night, defeated Binary Domain, a console shooter later ported to the PC. The controls and porting are a minor issue, as about three hours into the game you will likely find a method of playing that works for you, and after the first chapter I didn’t have any real problems with the game’s controls, so I’m not going to really address the mechanical aspects, but moreso my philosophical take on the title.

Binary_Domain_Squad

Binary Domain tells the story of a Rust Crew sent to Japan. A Rust Crew is a multinational assault team focused on combating robots that break the clauses of the Geneva convention, normally cases with rogue AI’s or dangerous robots. A human-like robot, unaware that he was a robot was revealed, and was thought to have been created by the Amada Corporation. These creatures were quickly called Hollow Children by the media. Thus, Chris Redfield lookalike Dan “The Survivor” and Cole Train expy Big Bo get sent in by the Americans to arrest Amada and locate the “Hollow Children” data. It does not help that the Hollow Children continually tear their faces off when revealed, reminding me more of They Live than The Terminator.

One thing you may notice about this story so far is that the Americans and the world in general have a very harsh attitude towards robots. Main protagonist Dan has a deep rooted issue with them, and the president himself (clearly a republican), goes so far as to play the god card and condemn them. A quarter way through the game, a Japanese clerk is seen dragged by Yakuza through the slums, and people marvel and jest at the idea of him being a Hollow Child and not even realizing he was one. After seeing his robotics in his own reflection, he shoots himself, rather than live on as a robot. This is one of the major themes of the game, being part of the overall mission and being prominent throughout.

BinaryDomain2

Thus, I contend that the game actually has a very philosophical tone; the world in general is convinced and maintains harsh laws against AI research, later revealed to be due to government’s fear of playing god and doing too well. Most of the people use the derogatory term “Scrap-Head” to refer to robots, and hold them in very low esteem. Even later in the game when a Robot actually joins the team, the characters continue to use the term. However, the characters are actually fairly respectful of this team member, which is likely the only time the main character is ever really nice to a robot.

The game gives many arguments against the validity of Hollow Children. The “well researched” arguments the government use include (but are not limited to): “They are not born of humans”, “Only god can create”, and other overtly racist comments towards living, thinking beings. We’re talking about artificial life forms capable of perfectly passing for humans for over 30 years without detection. The very second the claim of humanity is eroded (normally when the character is revealed to possibly be robotic) the tone of voice used by their peers immediately changes and the humans act very hostile towards them, never mind the fact that in most cases the Hollow Children are shown to be mostly harmless. I say “most” because as robots they are ultimately able to be controlled by Amada, which alone is a fascinating thing because for half of the game this is not even given any thought! Even when it is brought up, this never actually is used in one of the many arguments against Hollow Children, instead only hiding behind western religion in their attitudes against them.

Binary_featured

Shoehorn love interest Faye is one of the members of your team, and if Dan brings her along for the later half of the campaign, they will hatch a very romantic subplot. In a twist, it turns out that female Hollow Children can indeed give birth, and have with 108 such hybrids being identified. Faye of course, is one of these hybrids, and has no mechanical traces but superior breeding. This brings us back to the core American hatred of robots; the very moment the team figures this out, they all immediately are ready to kill Faye and regard her as an enemy, only because of her parents. Even Big Bo, the buddy character, constantly tells Dan to just forget about her.

Binary Domain is a ten hour long game, with most of this philosophy kind of hidden in the back and reserved as the major plot twist. What interests me most however, is how everybody treats Faye and the Hybrids. Surprisingly, Bergen, who stole Amadas technology in the first place (Primarily causing this entire situation), defends the hybrids, but the president shoots this down with some good old racism, “The world’s got enough racial tension.” are the words he uses to justify sending tactical wetwork teams to murder 108 people because of their parents. I mean seriously, who voted for this guy? Never mind the fact that there are likely hundreds more undocumented Hollow Children and potentially many undocumented Hybrid births. Would Amada really be so stupid as to let the true numbers get out? Mankind is constantly making very rash decisions given very sketchy intel.

2132449521_full

In being a hybrid, Bergen is very specific in mentioning that the resulting creature is fully organic. While Amada is also very specific in revealing his intention is just to change the world and erase robot-racism by introducing hybrids. By the end of the game, I’m wondering who exactly the good guy really is. Really, the entire “evil scheme” in total is just a crazy man’s revenge against the government for fucking him over, as all he truly wants is to change the world for arguably the better. Even what we see in Japan is terrible living conditions under the city (Mentioned to be replicated throughout the world), while the city proper is a sort of metropolis, presenting thousands upon thousands of mass produced combat robots for you to fight. In fact, you don’t actually shoot a Japanese person in the entire game, only their robots.

For a robot to perfectly survive as a human, and in some cases, being shown to achieve very high rankings in the military, I seriously don’t see the real problem in identifying them as people. They have personalities, dreams, lives, thoughts, conflicts. So much so, that they have very real existential issues when discovered, not only to the people around them, but to themselves. There is some miracle that was possible that gave these robots a true mind and life, and then there are the Hybrids that are very much organic living beings themselves, and noted to be just human but slightly better. Faye does not show any truly superhuman abilities and its not suggested that they have any, yet all America is shown to do is make some excuses and send out the assassins.

binary-domain-01

I guess the bottom line is that it can be hard to take the game seriously, especially towards the end. As the game is very preachy in its belief that America sucks, its operatives are loud and flashy. They kill robotic personal the instant they are discovered as robots, and pretty much every American in the game is shown to be very devout in their unfounded opinions on the beings. They show a lot of hate, but never show a concrete reason. Part of it is religious thought, specifically focusing on the fact that we call them robots. We’re shown a lot of evidence that these creatures are real people, some would argue that they’re more real than actual people, and by the end of the day Amada is not actually doing anything morally “wrong”. His drive is simply to eradicate racism by binding mechanical traits to humans, and ultimately symbiotically improve them, thus possibly saving humanity from its current issues.

Therefore, I have to question what would happen in reality should this occur. In our current age it’s only inevitable that we will eventually create life en mass and we will one day have artificial life in our society, how should we react to this? What if Hollow Children truly were out there? Are they people? In the game, they had been in society for at least thirty years without being found out. But in general, would an artificial being fully capable of life and personality truly be a person?

22093binary-domain1202158

Something also important to note is that the game is Japanese, yet does not tell the tale from Japan’s perspective. The squad mechanics also exemplify helping your team out and using teamwork with your group which is a core value. Which is why I find it interesting that while the main characters are good and fighting for what’s right we can see that their means and superiors are decidedly evil luddites. Japan’s city is shown to be large, spacious, and well maintained, and the police do their jobs very well, to the extent of pinging everybody’s cellphones to evacuate and everybody moving posthaste, thus you can assume the police are evacuating everybody in your path. In game, Japan erected a huge wall around their island as a second act of isolation, which was damaged by the end.

By the end of the game’s events, the 108 Hybrids are being hunted by the UN, yet oddly they mention Faye is MIA, as if the other 107 are that easy to find. No, I’m serious; I really doubt the validity of any document I would find in a building ran by an AI that intelligent. So, you can be sure that the Hollow Children and the Hybrids being insanely hard to detect will continue to reproduce. Any fan of Nietzsche will love them too, since being a Hybrid entitles immunity to disease, improved intelligence and superior physical capacity. I didn’t even mention that Amada hacked the planet and thus gave all computers the logic to deny illogical requests like launching a nuke for no tactical reason. The moral of this story; Japan’s existence is a credit to scientific team, and using science, they saved the world by isolating themselves away so they could work in peace. A thing to note is that without the Rust Team’s involvement, the world would’ve been destroyed, so their part was not pointless either. Ultimately, the results of the situation have opened up several ways for the world to further evolve (As if just having robot women to make uber-children was not enough for a golden age).

If you like the sound of Binary Domain, the game is currently 75% off on Steam!

Irrational Games today released a new trailer for their upcoming first-person shooter, Bioshock Infinite. This trailer is especially effective (for me anyways), as it shows us a lot of what the Bioshock team does best, atmosphere.

The game is just two months away now, releasing on March 26th, and it looks absolutely wonderful. Check out the new trailer below, which takes you back to 1912, and way, way up to Columbia.

Arg… it’s going to be a long two months.

Machinima has just debuted a new trailer for the upcoming Bioshock Infinite, and damn does it look good.

The preview isn’t overly long (clocking in at just under two minutes), but it shows us a bit more of what we can expect from the title. It looks absolutely amazing, and I don’t want to give anything away, so just check the trailer out for yourself.

I’m a huge fan of the Bioshock series. The world that irrational created is extremely hard to match in atmosphere and terror, and its quite the achievement to wrap such a fantastic game around the world as well.

I’m eagerly awaiting Bioshock Infinite, and can’t wait to pick it up on February 26th, 2013 (also my birthday!).

A new trailer for the next game to come out of Crytek has surfaced, and it isn’t another Crysis. Warface is a “Social FPS”, that looks DAMN good. This ain’t no Facebook game. Lets watch the trailer and delve deeper.

You get all that? In a nutshell Warface is a Free to Play “Social FPS”. The cool part is it’s delivery method. Crytek have their own social network called Gface which this game will be released through. It is a browser based game platform that allows players to drop in and drop out on the fly in any of their games.

Warface is using the CryEngine 3 which means it will be scalable over pretty much any modern PC. So what can you expect from Warface in terms of gameplay? Well not much has been released but what they have said is pretty intriguing. There will be monthly PVE “coop” events where players can team up and go against the AI. There will also be classic PVP matches where teams can duke it out deathmatch style.

So, you’re asking what the gameplay looks like? Well take a gander at this other trailer that features in game footage!

It looks so rad! It’s like Rainbow 6, Battlefield and CoD had a love baby and Crysis was the surrogate. Prices for the game itself haven’t been released, if there is any, and the inevitable premium portions have not been hinted at all yet.

So when we get more information for you on this epic looking browsers based game, we will be sure to keep you up to date!

Aside from the occasional dabbling through hell in Doom, Goldeneye for the N64 was essentially my first experience with a First Person Shooter, especially since I never had a kick ass PC like all the cool kids had. I remember losing hours upon hours with my friends fighting through science labs, forests and tight corridors fragging each other left and right. But to think these memories that I share with countless other gamers almost weren’t possible.

At GDC Europe, game director Marin Hollis spoke about how the feature was a last minute addition that was slipped in on the side. Stating that it was added in around “March or April,” a mere four months before release, he also went on to explain how the rush job led to some of the game’s infamous imbalance.

“We didn’t have time to balance all the characters. Really we just threw them in. But these little quirks and bits of sketchiness really bring personality to the game.”

We’re looking at you, Oddjob! But to think one of the most legendary multiplayer experiences of all time almost never was. I don’t care if it was an imbalanced mess in retrospect, (the laptop gun, proximity mines, the karate chop of DOOM!) It was damn fun.

What’s your favorite memory of Goldeneye?

For fans that complained that Modern Warfare 3 was just the same game yet again…it looks like you’re in for a treat. While we do not get to see any of the game modes are going to be offered we do get to see some of the new devices and gadgets that are going to be available and all I can say is…holy fuck what is that ED-209 thing and how many kills do I need to use it? Ladies…prepare to say goodbye to your boyfriends for awhile.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops II will be released November 13th.

So, are you not quite sick of zombies yet? A fan of ‘The Walking Dead’ TV series? A first person shooter fanatic? Well then Activision may have released some news that may just please you. In 2013 they will be releasing a first-person shooter based on ‘The Walking Dead’ television series where you will take on the role of fan favorite Daryl Dixon.

Developed by Terminal Reality, The Walking Dead will revolve around Daryl Dixon and his brother Merle on a “haunting, unforgiving quest to make their way to the supposed safety of Atlanta.” Players will control Daryl as they attempt to avoid detection from zombies that hunt using sight, sound and smell and will choose between fighting them or using stealth to avoid detection. According to Activision, “No place is truly safe for Daryl as he makes his way through the Georgia countryside in this new, post-apocalyptic world.”

Supplies will be scarce and players will need to carefully manage food, ammunition and supplies as they make their way through the game. Daryl will encounter “a slew of other characters” along the way that can help or hurt him. Whether or not these characters accompany Daryl is completely up to the player and “represents just some of the major decisions that will constantly be made while fighting to survive.”

EA’s new installment into the Medal of Honor series released it’s first gameplay trailer today. Danger Close’s ‘Warfighter’ touts the Frostbite 2 Engine, an engine used for Battlefield 3.

From the trailer, we can gather that missions will be located globally. One of my favorite things about Battlefield 3 are the environments. I’m hoping ‘Warfighter’ will expand on environmental hazards and design. Still, I skipped the last Medal of Honor for a reason. It’ll take a little more for me to go out and reserve the next. While I believe warfare FPS’ is dominated by the Call of Duty franchise, Medal of Honor Warfighter definitely has a one-up with the addition of Frostbite 2.

Medal of Honor Warfighter is set to release October 23, 2012.

It was recently announced that the hit DICE game Battlefield 3 will be getting 3 new expansion packs this year.

June debuts Close Quarters which includes 10 new weapons that focuses on smaller maps and infantry battles.

This Fall Armored Kill releases. DICE says this expansion pack is all about the vehicles and will feature the BIGGEST map the developer has ever made.

This Winter will feature End Game. No information was given from the developer but a vigilant Redditor started investigating and put 2 and 2 together.

Hopefully by Christmas, the Battlefield will be riddled with Raptors. Remember, stay out of the tall grass!

If you’re like me, you’ll want to bypass all the words of hype, so, here are your first Halo 4 IN-GAME screenshots:

343 Industries promises Halo 4 to be the best-looking game on the Xbox 360. With a release date that’s far off into the holidays of this year, it’s looking like 343i may keep that promise.

As you can see, the first two screenshots are of Master Chief, while the third is a multiplayer model probably wearing default armor. I’m sure seeing the Master Chief’s armor in-game will stir even more debate as to why 343i made some changes. There are many reasons, and we can save that for another time.

I’m sure many gamers will be overjoyed with an updated Battle Rifle making the cut for this new installment. As you watch the video below, keep an eye out for some pleasant reveals:

Halo 4 is set to release this holiday season. Here is our extensive gallery from the tour:

Today on the Battlelog Blog Community Manager zh1nt0 posted the entire patch notes.

Some notable fixes are:

-Players should no longer take fall damage from short falls.

-Unguided tank rounds and RPGs will now instantly destroy Jets, Attack Helicopters, and Scout Helicopters.

-AA Missiles are more difficult to dodge in Jets, this was unintended behavior that created an imbalance against skilled pilots.

-The F35 will now only attempt to enter Hover at low altitudes, though it will maintain the hover until forward flight is resumed, even if it reaches high altitude.

-The Horizontal Sway reduction has been changed from a global percent reduction to a weapon specific value reduction

-The Hip Accuracy bonus provided by the Laser Sight has been increased. Some PDWs have had their crouch and prone base stats adjusted to prevent hip firing being more accurate than aimed fire when using a laser sight.

-The MAV can no longer be used as an elevator.

Also, possibly the most important patch from the entire changelog

-Added Horns to all Jeeps.

Thats right…HORNS ARE BACK BABY!

There is not a release date for this patch yet, they are tweaking the whole stack for all three platforms

Everyone is pumped for 2 weeks from now, when Mass Effect 3 is released. Why wouldn’t you be? Look at this trailer! It’s p0rn for geeks! The only question now is: How will you play through?

Let us know in the forums how you played through the first two games!

When it comes to modern RPGs, the Mass Effect series is at the top for me. It’s much better than Persona 3, Fallout 3, and even Skyrim. For the main games, you got fantastic cinematic storytelling, an extremely immersive universe, and most importantly, excellent characters that you really care about. It’s also interesting to see how the game evolved from an RPG similar to Knights of the Old Republic to an extremely competent hybrid of 3rd-person shooter and RPG, and when it was announced that it would have multiplayer, I was worried that it was the first potential sign that Mass Effect 3 would not be as great a game as the first two. To my surprise, when the demo was released and multiplayer was open to everyone, it was fantastic…! Intense game play that plays EXACTLY like Mass Effect 3’s single player campaign, strong co-op, and a really fun experience, the multiplayer certainly has a lot going for it.

Mass Effect 3’s Multiplayer has you playing as part of a squad whose task is to survive wave after wave of enemy forces until an Alliance shuttle can extract you and your squad from danger. You and three other players have to survive ten waves of enemies, with special tasks to accomplish at the 3rd, 6th, and 10th wave. These usually involve deactivating/activating 4 targets on the map, or fortifying a specific location to allow/stop the upload of intel, and after the final wave, you fortify your starting location for 2 minutes until a friendly shuttle can pick you up and end the mission. At this time, there are only two maps with three difficulty levels, but it’s still fun to play.

What’s great about the multiplayer is the sense of teamwork you get from each match as you need to work together in order to survive. It is possible to play by yourself or with one other person, but the maps do not adjust the amount of enemies in relation to how many players are in a single match, especially since the enemies are actively pursuing you in Mass Effect 3, unlike Mass Effect 2 in which the majority of enemies only advanced when you moved from your position. In order to win, it’s best to have at least 2 other people to back you up. At the end of each match, you get experience to level up your character and credits to buy different packs of items, which include weapons, mods for your weapons and armor, weapon upgrades, consumable items, and the ability to unlock further customization for a specific class.

When you start multiplayer, you choose a class and then you choose a character. There are 4 characters to each class: Two humans (Male and Female) and two aliens. As of now, only one character is unlocked, and I’m assuming that as you buy more item packs, you can unlock the other characters. Each race per class has unique abilities, so if you want a specific power set, try to unlock that character as you play more of the game. After you name your character, you can adjust his primary armor color and highlight color, with other customization options waiting to be unlocked.

Afterwards, you’re brought to the character menu in which you can choose and upgrade your powers like in the main game, change your weapon loadout as well as mod your weapons with scopes and other add-ons, add special enhancements for a single match via the Equipment option, or buy more item packs from the store. With weapons, you can only equip two guns total and you can’t carry two of the same type (IE, can’t carry two shotguns at once), but you can choose whatever guns you like, so it’s a good balance. One disappointing thing is that while you can create more than one character per class, you can’t delete your character. If you’re playing a human, you can move to the other gender since humans have the same skills in each class, but if you mess up with any of the other races, you’re stuck with a bad setup, and at this point, I don’t know if there is a way to re-adjust your powers.

When you’re done perfecting your character, it’s time to join a match. You’re able to join any match via Quick Match, create a new match and see personal and global leaderboards. Regardless of whether you choose quick match or create new match, you get to choose your map and your difficulty level. With creating a new match, you can choose to make it public, so anyone using quick match can access your lobby, or private, so that only your Origin friends can access the room. You can examine mission settings, adjust your character settings as if you were in the character screen, and adjust options here.

When you’re ready to play, click “Ready”, wait for everyone else, and in 5 seconds, you’re dropped into the match.  Another disappointing note is that there’s no general lobby where you can pick and choose player rooms, so you can pick the ones with a decent internet connection. When I used Quick Match, the hosting player’s internet connection was unstable half the time, which meant plenty of lag and matches ending prematurely when the hosting player is disconnected. This is probably the most disappointing part of the Multiplayer, and I hope that when the full game is released, there is at least an option to pull up a general lobby to pick your matches.

All in all, the multiplayer for Mass Effect 3 is very solid, and it is a good example of how to do co-op multiplayer well. The aggressive enemies and increasingly difficulty help reinforce working together as a team, and that is definitely the best part of the multiplayer altogether. It also feels more immersive than the main game at this time since you are playing as your own character in the Mass Effect universe rather than your version of Shepard. However, the disappointments that I pointed out will definitely turn off some players, especially those who play mostly for the multiplayer. Bioware/EA has at least some time to fix these issues, and if not, there will hopefully be a patch that addresses this in the near future. I definitely recommend checking out the single player campaign before you dive straight into the multiplayer, just so you can get an idea of how it works. You can download the demo and get more information about Mass Effect 3 at masseffect.bioware.com.
