Geekscape Recap: Grimm: “PTZD”

Another solid episode this week, Grimm fans. One that didn’t even feel like an hour (causing us to cry out when the credits rolled “but, we want more!”).

“PTZD” picks up right where last week’s episode left off, with Monroe and Hank chasing Nick’s scent through the woods, while Nick busily begins terrorizing some random family (who luckily have their address right on their mailbox, which proves helpful when Hank calls in for back-up).

The Beast Within

Hank and Monroe get there right before the Random Family Father can shoot Nick (a totally understandable response since Nick had just bashed his way through the front door). Nick’s super-senses (hinted at last week) are revealed when he catches a vase thrown at his head by Hank (in an effort to distract Nick from hurting the Random Family).

Now, what Nick was actually going to do to the family (eat them? Kill them?) isn’t clear, because last week—and later in this episode—it’s made very clear that even violent Nick was only reacting to clear threat. But a Random Family being threatened certainly raised the stakes, though, because two little girls and a mother are much more sympathetic potential victims then hardened petty criminals in a road house.

Monroe and Hank get Nick to follow them by throwing things at Nick’s head and making noise, and get him out to the barn, where they trap Nick in a stall (using the old weak-floor-in-the-hayloft-as-trap-door trick).

Renard, Juliette and Rosalee show up (Hank having called Renard once they found Nick); they calm down Random Family Father, who comes running out with his gun, and Renard and Hank began the-protect-Nick-cover-up which permeates the rest of the episode by telling Random Family Father that they were in pursuit of patient zero of the recent outbreak (the zombie thing, and good use of last season’s medical ‘explanation’),  Thomas Shirach (the identity the evil brother, Eric, had set up for Nick).

Random Family Father goes back inside after refusing to give up his gun—a plot point that never goes anywhere, despite a two-minute long conversation about it, which was slightly confusing. Usually writers don’t spend that long on an item to then have it go nowhere. Renard, Hank and Monroe go back inside the barn after telling the women to ‘stay outside.’ The blatant sexism made our eyes roll (has anyone else noticed that except for one episode with a visiting cop, and the occasional uniform, ALL the police officers in Portland are apparently men?)

Points for Trying, Guys

So the men go in just as Nick breaks free from the stall—but there’s enough time for some repartee between Renard, Hank and Monroe (leading to the best line of the night):

As Renard moves to fight Nick:

Monroe: Not like this, I tried.

They morph into their Wesen shapes. Hank shudders.

Renard: (to Hank): You okay?

Hank: Man, I wish I could do that.

Ha! Awesome. Totally unexpected but somehow perfect for Hank’s character.

The three proceed to get the crap beat out of them by Nick before Juliette—who, along with Rosalee, had come into the barn anyway—stabs him with the crazy needle of de-zombie-fication. Which has three 3-inch long needles and apparently needs to get plunged into the patient’s sternum/stomach area. Not like there’s any important organs there or anything they could puncture…

Nick reacts the way any person would react after being stabbed in the abdomen with three 3-inch needles—he flings Juliette away from him. So now there’s the ‘I hit my girlfriend’ angst we can refer to all season.

The drugs kick in and Nick goes down for the count. Point here: if they knew he was going to be zombie-crazy, why didn’t they bring tranquilizers? We asked this last week, and we ask it again: does Portland not have ANY tranq guns?

They rush Nick back to the Spice shop—noting en route that he’s very cold, and his pulse his very slow—just before the local cops show up. Monroe points out to Renard that someone needs to make sure Prince Eric gets his due.

Let’s Not Forget the Witch

Back to Europe, Stefenia and Adalind return to Stefenia’s trailer, where the gutted body of Frau Pech still lies on the floor. Stefanie instructs Adalind to place the dead flowers she collected into the now-empty body cavity. Adalind, rebellious but complying, goes to kneel when the flowers fly out and fill the body themselves. Now, says Stefenia, sew up the incision.

At the spice shop, Nick gets a second dose—lancing his spleen, this time—and starts to come to. Juliette and Rosalee act concerned; Renard goes back to the precinct; Monroe and Hank discuss what they’d do to Prince Eric if he was their brother; Nick’s flailing gets alarming and the cuff him to the bed.

In Stefenia’s trailer, Adalind has to cut the thread (so gross, covered in goopy blood thread, that we had to put a picture in) with her teeth. Steam comes out of the body—the process, whatever it is, is working faster than Stefenia thought.

Renard gets a text telling him to check the news—where the death of Eric Renard in a tragic car accident is being reported. Since the actor—James Frain—is now on Sleepy Hollow, supposedly this death is a real one.

Back at the Spice Shop, Rosalee is tending to Monroe’s wounds (their light, comfortable-couple banter makes this the second best scene of the night) while Juliette dabs Nicks brow with a cool cloth, we guess. Because an apothecary is so much more qualified to clean deep head wounds than a vet, who we can assume was at least taught how to do real stitches…

Anyway, Nick wakes up, confused, and with no memory of the night before. The gang fills him in, finishing with the small comfort of ‘at least you didn’t kill anyone.’

So, yeah, obviously, someone from his rampage is going to die soon.

More Relatives We Didn’t Know Existed

Renard calls (gets a call from?) someone we assume is related, who is on a train in Europe going on a ‘vacation’ separate from the ‘family.’ And then Wu walks in—sure enough, one of the guys in the fight just died at the hospital. Renard confirms the Thomas Shirach identity as the culprit and asks about security footage.

None, says, Wu, the drive was destroyed.

Wu leaves and Renard pulls out a hard drive—which has the footage on it. Flashback to the night before: when Monroe and Hank went after Nick, Renard went looking for the footage, stealing it and trashing the office.

Renard watches the footage intently, then hides the drive in his desk. To use as blackmail later? We don’t know, but the sense that Renard is an ally only for as long as it is convenient for him is pretty well hinted at.

Nick is freaking out in the Spice Shop, wondering if he’s going to get caught and what defense he can use. None, the gang reasons, not without coming clean about the Wesen and being a Grimm, etc. etc.

Sidenote: Our understanding of current law is that if you can prove you were non compos mentis through no fault of your own—i.e., suffering from a severe neurotoxin injected into you against your will, or even just infected from repeated exposure—then there is no case. Plus, Nick is an outstanding cop with no record. There’s really no way a DA would pursue this case. To not at least bring this up and explain why it wouldn’t work leaves a GAPING hole in the episode, which, judging from how it ends, means Nick’s angst for the season will also have a hole in it.

Juliette takes Nick home; there’s an awkward moment when he comes onto her (“I’d rather not sleep alone,” he says, complete with a slightly-smarmy grin). Considering what they’ve just been through in the past 24 hours (not to mention ALL of last season) it felt odd and didn’t resonate with their relationship. As much as we are not fans of the way this show utilizes Juliette, her and Nick’s relationship was, at one point in season one, maybe, a really nice relationship to watch.

Hank goes back to the station and doesn’t lie to Wu, exactly, but stretches the truth pretty hard when he assures Wu Nick was at the shipyard the night before. Wu tells Hank that one of the victims from the bar died—sending Hank straight to Renard’s office. Renard and Hank agree they need a cover story that Juliette, Rosalee and Renard can tell to the detectives investigating the death.

Hank calls Juliette and tells her a man is dead—can she meet at the Spice shop? And let Nick sleep, he needs it.

So Juliette—who has medical training of a kind—leaves the man who less than eight hours was a red-eyed zombie and had two doses of a drug they weren’t sure of the effects of when it came to Grimms ALL ALONE. Not even a note of where she had gone.

Bitsie Tulloch—the actress who plays Juliette—does her best with this role but it’s just not being utilized well.

They’ll Totally Believe It

Juliette arrives at the Spice Shop and her, Hank, Renard, Monroe and Rosalee all agree to cover for Nick. No one mentions the Random Family, only the bar and the security footage there. Which means they never discuss covering for how Hank and Monroe were there, or where they took ‘Shirach.’ Now, police responded to a 911 call to the house which wasn’t immediately linked to the bar brawl but someone should put that together, right?

Anyway, cover story agreed upon, everyone goes their separate ways.

Hank and Renard go back to the precinct, where Hank figures out Renard has the security footage. Confronted, Renard insists it was to keep Nick safe.

Juliette returns home to find Nick cold, with no pulse. As she dials 911, Nick’s color returns (a nice bit of movie magic there) and he wakes up. After he calms Juliette down and agrees to go to a doctor, they both go back to sleep.

All The Fun Stuff Happens in Europe

Meanwhile, Stefenia and Adalind are having super fun times in the trailer; Stefenia cuts open Frau and a red goo oozes out; Adalind must (with her hands) fill a jar with the goo. Ew.

At the Spice Shop, the detectives show up and question Rosalee. She sticks to the story.

Adalind, back in her hotel and clean for the first time in two episodes, drops a towel (a VERY nicely placed chair covered the R-rated bits) and rubs the goo from Frau on her belly. It’s absorbed, leaving a shape of a skull on her skin. Adalind grins.

The detectives move on to Juliette—and that’s when Nick finds out one of the men he attacked has died. After they leave—Juliette sticking to the story as well—Nick insists on coming clean.

Why Juliette, who KNEW the police were coming, and had enough time to get dressed and make coffee, didn’t tell Nick or get Nick out of the house, or something, I don’t know.

Nick rushes to the precinct intent on confessing; even Hank, telling him that to confess would get all the Scooby gang in trouble, can’t stop him.

Renard receives a call from his mother, who thanks him for killing Prince Eric. O-o-o-o, what plots twists are going to come from that? Just as he hangs up, Nick comes in—apparently the two detectives on the case took longer to get back to the precinct then Nick did—and Renard shows Nick the security footage. The guy that died had come at Nick with a knife—Nick’s violence, while extreme, was somewhat mitigated by the fact that it had been provoked.

Nick, torn, finally decides to keep quiet.

All’s Well That’s Resolved by the End of The Episode?

The episode cleaned up a lot of loose threads from last season and placed some interesting new factors in play, and for the most part did it well. The angst-y acting (never the show’s strongest spot) should hopefully be on hold for a while as the show goes back to its procedural-of-the-week mode.

Next week on “A Dish Best Served Cold”  it’s blutbaden versus bauerschwein (wolves versus pigs) and it looks like Nick is forced to shoot Monroe!?! Though clever teaser editing may be all that turns out to be.

Next week’s recap will be out later in the week as well, as your friendly writer will be covering BlizzCon all weekend.

Geekscape Recap: Grimm: “The Ungrateful Dead”

Ah, Grimm. How we missed you! Welcome back!

Grimm, which premiered on Friday, Oct. 25th—just in time for Halloween—is a great show that not enough people are watching, and if  last night’s episode was any indication, season three could prove to be the best season yet.

The season two finale left our heroes separated; Detective/Grimm Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli) is captured by Baron Samedi and the Captain Renard’s evil half-brother Eric (who is a Prince of the mysterious Royal family) and being whisked away to Europe while Juliette (Bitsie Tulloch), Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) and Rosalee (Bree Turner) are trapped by ‘zombies’ in an container yard.

Just UnDead Enough To Be a Problem

Now, we already know the zombies aren’t your typical undead, rather, they are suffering the effects of a poison spit out by the supernatural Wesen, Baron Samedi, which knocks them out, mimicking death. When they awake, they are in a violent, fugue state which results in death if not treated.

So a crowd of just-zombied-enough-to-be-a-hazard people are attacking our loyal Scooby gang, and Captain Renard (Sasha Roiz) arrives too late to save Nick—so it’s definitely time to call in the cavalry.

Which Juliette does (the ONLY helpful thing she’s done in the past two seasons, seriously) by calling Nick’s partner, Hank (Russell Hornsby—finally off the crutches). Hank has no questions (it is SO NICE that all our main characters are now sharing information) and immediately pulls in Sergeant Wu (Reggie Lee) to wrangle the posse and head out to the container yard.

Meanwhile, in Europe, Gypsy witch and black-market purveyor Stefania Vaduva Popescu (Shohreh Aghdashloo) finishes ripping the still-beating heart out of Frau Pech (Mary McDonald-Lewis) and seals it in a puzzle box of sorts. She calls in Adalind (Claire Coffee), who has grown on us during season two, and was particularly charming in her I-can’t-believe-I’m-doing-this-why-is-magic-so-dirty attitude this episode. Stefania informs Adalind that if Adalind wishes to have her Hexenbiest powers restored, she will cut off Frau Pech’s hands and feet. With a moue of distaste, Adalind kneels down, blade in hand.

How’d you get up there? Why Didn’t You Move the Stairs??

Hank and the cavalry arrive just in time to rescue Rosalee, Monroe and Juliette; the police begin rounding up the zombies and placing them in an empty shipping container (amazingly, an empty shipping container was just right next to where all the zombies were. Handy, that); Renard finds the container where Nick was taken, but before he can search for clues is attacked by zombies himself.

He goes partial-Hexenbiest on them, and dispatches three in short order just as a phone rings—Hank, calling Nick’s phone.

Renard meets up with Hank and the rest of the gang, and they compare notes. Juliette pouts about not finding Nick fast enough (really, has she NO skills?) while the police continue rounding up zombies (has the Portland PD never heard of tranq darts???).

Knowing that Eric wants Nick in Vienna—which means a plane—everybody jumps in Nick’s car and heads to the airport while Hank frantically calls the Airport Police. After discovering there is a plane under Baron Samedi’s name (apparently no need for an alias after you’ve just kidnapped a cop and murdered a bunch of people), Hank directs the airport security to approach with caution and to not let any plane take off.

Rosalee brings up the interesting factoid that no one knows how Nick—a Grimm—will react to the Baron’s poison. Since Nick isn’t exactly normal.

Airport Police To The Rescue…Oh, Wait…

Well, of course, the airport police show up (just two of them) and immediately separate, one going inside to ‘search’ and the other staying outside to chat with the Baron. So, of course, he gets zapped with the green poison ooze. His screams bring his partner out—and he, following the police procedure of we-can’t-actually-arrest-the-bad-guy-because-then-the-show-will-be-over, runs right past the Baron to his downed partner, and of course, gets slimed/oozed himself.

The plane takes off just as Hank et al get there. Juliette, per her usual function, stomps her foot and screams no, no, no, and then, showing an AMAZING lack of knowledge of police procedure for a women who lives with a cop, demands Renard stop the place. Then she slaps him, because that’s a how a strong woman goes about saving her man—slapping the people who are helping and demanding that they ‘get him back.’

Juliette is reprieved from being told to grow up, stop being a child, and if she has any helpful solutions she is welcome to bring those up (sorry, that’s our fantasy of what Renard was about to say after she slapped him) by Sergeant Chu calling Hank—the zombies are all rounded up, now what do they do?

Well, Rosalee has a handy-dandy antidote they know works, but they need to make more. Renard will check with the FAA to see if the plane logged a flight plan (which even we know private planes don’t have to do…) and everyone heads back to the car—except for Monroe, who points out the two unconscious cops. Since they can’t be treated yet, the cops get thrown into the back of the car for later (we never see them again, but we assume they got cured and went home and had pot roast for dinner).

I’m Not Dead Yet

Cut to the Baron’s plane, where the Baron is drinking bottled water (??) and gloating over the not-quite-dead Grimm in his metal coffin. Now, audience, Rosalee has already told us that a Grimm might react differently, so we know something is going to happen—and sure enough, the coffin starts to rattle.

Then it starts to shake, as Nick punches the steel into new shapes. The Baron, not worried yet, leans over the coffin, and when Nick forces the lid up, the Baron spits more poisonous goo. Nick slumps, the Baron, chuckling, walks away—and then Nick’s eyes open.

He attacks the Baron, and then a hapless co-pilot, which takes the fight into the cockpit—the plane starts to crash.

Back to Europe, where Adalind has dulled her knife hacking off Frau Pech’s hands. Stefania takes her to a lovely field of poppies and throws the lid of the puzzle box into the air, where it hovers, magically, for a moment, before landing.

Handing Adalind a spade made of a human foot (we think), Stefania bids her dig.

Back to the plane; Baron Samedi tries to regain control of Nick by chanting “Obey me, for I am your master.” Which doesn’t work at all. Nick throws him across the cock pit and the plane goes down in the forests of Oregon.

To the Tea Shop!

Meanwhile, Monroe, Rosalee and Juliette are back at the tea and spice shop, debating what to do. Juliette wants to fly to Vienna and get Nick. Monroe agrees with her—though at least he backs his argument up with a few thoughts (1) he doesn’t trust Renard and (2) they could get all of the Wesen Nick’s helped to assist.

Rosalee frets about how to inject the antidote into the dozens of zombie both in time and without getting hurt; Juliette remembers she’s a vet and probably took a chemistry class or two and comes up with the idea of making it into a gas (it takes them an unbelieving LONG time to get to that conclusion…)

Renard, back at the police station, orders his mole in the Royal family to kill Eric when Eric lands; there is a yes-we-already-knew-that bit of ex positional dialogue between Hank and Renard where the importance of saving Nick is again brought up.

At the crash site, a red-eyed, bloody and clearly not himself Nick pulls himself out of the wreckage and stumbles into the woods, leaving behind a dead Baron and two injured pilots.

Back at the container yard, Chu is having all the fun rounding up one-off zombies and putting them into the container. Monroe, Juliette and Rosalee show up with the treatment—Monroe, showing his innate knowledge of tactics, suggest making noise at the not-the-door-end of the container to distract the zombies so that Juliette and Rosalee can throw the antidote in, leading to the best line of the night (courtesy of Monroe), in response to knowing if the treatment worked: “I don’t know, I think it’s kind of like popcorn. You know it’s done with they stop making noise.”

Grimm Crash Plane. Grimm Smash!

Back at the precinct, Hank gets the plane-crash call; Nick stumbles out of the woods to find a conveniently placed roadhouse filled with a central-casting assortment of tough characters.

Chu opens the container to find a bunch of confused, bruised and frightened—but cured—people, just as Hank calls Monroe. Juliette, continuing her taking-a-stand-on-things-that-don’t-matter, insists Monroe put it on speaker phone. Hank tells them all that the plane has crashed.

Renard and Hank arrive at the crash site first, to find the Baron’s body but no Nick. Seeing the punch marks on the steel coffin, they realize that they may now be not so much rescuing Nick as rescuing other people from Nick. Hank calls the local police to request any 911 calls get copied to him.

Nick, senses inundated by the noise of the bar, attacks the first guy in his way, and then just keeps going. His senses are super-attuned; he can hear people’s heart as they attack from behind him. Terrified customers flee.

Monroe, Juliette and Rosalee show up at the plane crash just as Hank gets a call about a disturbance at a nearby bar—the whole gang heads out.

The bar owner comes out with a gun; Nick easily disarms him but then lets the guy ran away; seeing himself in the mirror, Nick, with a yell, throws the gun and shatters the mirror.

Renard, Hank, etc., pull up to the roadhouse just as the owner stumbles out; Monroe can smell Nick—it’s him, but different. Juliette offers to help (how?) and Rosalee tells him it’s not really Nick.

There’s No Way Their Finishing This In One Episode

They go in and see the damage—no one dead, but a lot hurt. Monroe and Hank head out the back after Nick.

Back to the field of poppies. Adalind finishes digging the hole, then buries the hands, feet and heart in it. Stefania says they will wait, and soon they will know if Adalind has been accepted.

After a moment, a growing circle of dead flowers spreads out from around them, then a green, vaguely skeleton looking form rises from the newly covered hole and is absorbed into Adalind, whose eyes glow green. Stefania tells her she has been accepted—and now she has to collect the dead flowers. Leading to the second best line of the night, Adalind’s snarky, exhausted: “Really?”

Back at the bar, cops pull up as Renard comes out, asking for ambulances, then tells Juliette and Rosalee that Nick has fled, and they have to stop Nick before he kills someone, because there’s no coming back from that.

Monroe gets Nick’s scent in the woods and he and Hank head after him.

Nick comes up to a house with a mom, dad and a little girl just getting home. Oh noes! What if he kills a family??

The episode ends with “This Ain’t Over Yet” title and a then a ‘this season Grimm’ sizzle reel (we can’t find it anywhere on line! Google has failed us!) that ends with what looks like Nick shooting Monroe! What? Why?

So a fun, fast, mostly excellent episode to start off the new season. No word on when that rumored second Grimm will show up, though.

NBC Finally Sets The Premiere Date Of ‘Community’ Season 5!

Briefly: NBC today announced the long-awaited return date for Community‘s fifth season.

The network has cancelled newcomers Ironside and Welcome to the Family (which I’ve never actually even heard of), and set premiere dates and times for both Community and Chicago P.D.

Community kicks off its fifth season on Thursday, January 2nd at 8PM (premiering with two episodes back-to-back), while Chicago P.D. starts January 8th.

Season five of Community, of course, features the long awaited return of series creator Dan Harmon, who was fired before season 4 began production, only to be asked back a year later. We won’t be seeing Chevy Chase, who left the series in its fourth season, and we’ll be seeing much less of Donald Glover, who will appear for only five episodes.

Are you excited for Community‘s return? Being that it’s my favourite comedy, I can’t freaking wait! It will, however, be interesting to see which of the show’s mechanics need to change now the the study group will be so much smaller. Maybe they’ll finally let Chang in?

Geekscape’s Guide To The 2013-2014 TV Season

Below is the definitive list of new and returning shows on network and cable (excluding the smaller niche channels such as Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon) that could possibly have a fandom, be near a fandom, or be fandom adjacent…

Peruse through the list, watch some trailers (though not every show has a trailer yet), and have fun!

Starting with:

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D

ABC, Tues, 8 to 9 p.m. Air Date: 9/24

Whedon’s back on the small screen, folks, and he’s brought Coulson. And Lola. While not necessarily a super-hero show (Coulson runs a small team of normal, if talented, people who track and contain—if needed—new superhuman talent), it lives and breathes at the intersection of Marvel and Whedon so really, anything could happen. Whedon has said that the new series is Avengers adjacent, taking place after the events of The Avengers, but focusing on the normal people on the peripheral of the super-hero action. It is expected that the show will interact with both Captain America: The Winter Soldier as well as the upcoming Avengers sequel.

Clark Gregg reprises his role as Phil Coulson (you could hear the screams of joy as far as Montana when he was revealed as being alive at the 2013 South by Southwest Festival this year). He is joined by Ming-Na Wen (Mulan, Stargate Universe, Eureka), fan favorite J. August Richards (Angel), Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother, Avengers), and Ron Glass (Firefly, Serenity) along with a host of new, interesting characters that round out the team of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Quite possibly the most anticipated show airing this season—the pilot has gotten high scores at IGN as well as positive reaction from the San Diego Comic Con crowd—its pedigree and fan base should guarantee significant support—the question is will it appeal to a larger audience? Hopefully its adventure-of-the-week, underdog format will make it accessible enough for both the fans and the soon-to-be fans.

Once Upon A Time in Wonderland

ABC, Thurs, 8 to 9 p.m., 10/10

A spin-off of ABC’s hit Once Upon a Time, now in its third season, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland follows a now grown-up Alice, almost convinced her adventures were the ravings of an insane mind,  as she escapes from a Victorian London insane asylum and goes back down the rabbit hole.

Wonderland, however, is also a victim of the same curse as the residents of Storybook, Maine, prompting Alice into new and—hopefully— thrilling adventures.

The show is expected to cross over with Once Upon A Time and share characters and settings, as well as having the blending of ABC/Disney mythology that Once Upon a Time is known for (Once Upon A Time deals entirely with the Disney version of fairytales, stretching the premise as far as possible to include other characters, such as Mulan, Peter Pan, etc.).

Once Upon A Time had a similarly exciting premise that was never fulfilled, stuck instead in a mire of bad dialogue, over-exposition, predictable ‘twists’ and flashbacks with painfully obvious ‘lessons’ (only Rumpelstiltskin, played by Robert Carlyle, was ever able to convincingly play both sides of his characters). Hopefully Alice will not be plagued by the same issues.

Created by the same team as Once Upon a Time, Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz (who were also responsible for Tron: Legacy),  Alice stars newcomer Sophie Lowe as Alice, with Emma Rigby (Hollyoaks, Prisoners Wives) as The Red Queen, John Lithgow (Third Rock from the Sun to name one….) as the voice of the White Rabbit, and Naveen Andrews (The English Patient, Lost, The Adventures of Sinbad) as Jafar.

 From Kyle Killen (Lone Star, Awake), Mind Games stars Christian Slater and Steve Zahn as brothers who use psychological manipulation to help their clients solve problems; from the preview it looks a little like Franklin and Bash meets Leverage with some Lie to Me thrown in for good measure.

ABC, Sunday, 10 to 11 p.m., Limited Series, 2/24/13

Based on Jason Mott’s novel The Returned,  and co-produced by a long list of people including Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Resurrection stars Omar Epps (House), Francis Fisher (Eureka, Sons of Anarchy, Torchwood: Miracle Day) and Kurtwood Smith (That ‘70’s Show, Star Trek IV, 24). The show follows the lives of the citizens of Arcadia, Missouri as their loved ones begin returning from the dead—not as zombies, but as living, breathing, alive people the same age as they were when they died.

Returning Shows:

With renewals for both Once Upon a Time (Sun 8 to 9 p.m., 9/29) for its third season, and Castle (Mon, 10 to 11 p.m., 9/23) for its sixth season, ABC is a strong second among the networks for geek friendly fare.

BBC America—known for quality geekfare such as Merlin, Torchwood, Orphan Black, Being Human, Misfits, Vex, Spaced, Black Books and, of course, Doctor Who, Red Dwarf and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy—only has one new offering for the Fall 2013 season.

Atlantis

BBC America, Saturday, 11/23, Time TBA

Atlantis is a fantasy adventure program created and written by Howard Overman (Misfits and Vexed) and Johnny Capps (Merlin). The show’s main cast reads like a Guide to Greek Myths (Jason, Hercules, Medusa, The Oracle) and the series is set to be one of the most expensive projects on the BBC Wales studio. Atlantis looks to be very much in the BBC Sword-and-Sandals adventure genre, and we can safely expect well written, well-acted episodes with the occasional extremely cheesy special effect.

Midseason

The Musketeers is slated for midseason debut, but there is little information on it other than the newest incarnation of the Doctor, Peter Capaldi, was filming the show (he’s Cardinal Richelieu) when he was offered the role of the Doctor. Also starring Santiago Cabrera (Heroes, Merlin) and Luke Pasqualino (Skins).

Returning Shows

While disappointingly low on the new shows slate this season, the returning shows more than make up for it. With the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special on 11/23/13, as well as season 8 coming up (and a new Doctor), Orphan Black returning midseason (March 2014), and of course, the ubiquitous Top Gear (I won’t say which season, its re-run so much it’s nearly impossible to tell).

Sherlock Holmes will return for its third season as well, but will air in America on PBS.

CBS is next in our little alphabetical list…and they have nothing. Not the geek-friendliest network, CBS. Mid-season has a new show coming out called Intelligence (Mon, 10 to 11 p.m., air date 2/24/14), which basically looks like a not-as-funny Chuck. Which makes sense for the network that also has The Mentalist, which is basically a not-as-funny Psych.

Ah, the CW.  Where else could we find such unabashedly sexy fare?  As well as very, very, very geek friendly. And quantity, one might say, over quality. We have to at least give them credit for trying: of all the networks, the CW continuously has the most fantasy/sci-fi/speculative/comic-book based shows every season. And they don’t even require proficient storytelling or decent ratings when it comes to renewing them. This throw-it-at-the-wall-and-see-what-sticks approach has brought us Arrow and Beauty and the Beast; but it also brought us Supernatural and Nikita.

However, it has to be said that most CW shows can be boiled down to “pretty (mostly white) people with  (Insert bad guy/thing here) problems hook up with each other while maintaining bouncy, shiny hair and flawless skin.”

This year the CW gives us five—that’s right, five—sci-fi/fantasy shows. Three premiere this fall, the other two have mid-season dates.  True to mold, they all have a large cast of young, nubile and extremely good looking people who seem to spend a lot of time with their shirts either off or unbuttoned. Not to complain: sometimes it’s nice to sit back and watch the pretty.

The Originals

CW, Sneak Peek: Thurs, 9 to 10 p.m., 10/3; Regular Timeslot: Tues, 8 to 9 p.m., 10/8

A spin off of the popular Vampire Diaries, The Originals follows the lives of various supernatural characters (vampires, witches, werewolves, half vamp/half wolves…) in hot, steamy New Orleans. For some reason that sounds really familiar…but we just can’t place where we’ve seen something like that before.

The series focuses on the Klaus (Joseph Morgan), Elijah (Daniel Gillies) and Rebekah (Claire Rhiannon Holt) Mikaelson, vampire siblings–and the world’s original vampires–as they return to New Orleans—a town Klaus founded, centuries before—and enter a power struggle with the local supernaturals to reclaim to city.

The Originals has a sneak peek immediately after the season premiere of The Vampire Diaries before it moves to its normal timeslot on Tuesdays, leading into Supernatural. 

Reign

CW, Thursdays, 9 to 10 p.m., 10/17

CW’s attempt at The Tudors; Reign follows the young Mary, Queen of Scots, as she is courted by rival princes: the French (Catholic) and English (not-so-Catholic). The history of Queen Mary is fascinating. She had a legitimate claim to the English throne and was backed by English Catholics; she was married three times and was viewed as a powerful player in the socio-religious politics of the time; she survived multiple assassination attempts and was put under house arrest by Elizabeth I of England for eighteen years before eventually being executed for treason.

Unsurprisingly, the CW’s version is about high school age girls being flirted with by high school age boys who all just happen to be princes and princesses. Lots of pretty costumes and slow motion while a song that sounds a whole lot like Bones from MS MR plays underneath (clearly a lot of people saw the Game of Thrones season three preview and said, wow, we should make ours look just like that).

Oh, and Nostradamus as an articulate, court-going prophet. Who knew?

That’s not to say it couldn’t be the surprise hit of the season. Stranger things have happened.

The Tomorrow People

CW., Weds., 9 to 10 p.m., 10/9

A remake of the popular 1970’s BBC show of the same name, The Tomorrow People follows a group of young, pretty people who are the next stage in human evolution. The Tomorrow People have psi powers that ran the usual gamut of telepathy, teleportation, telekinesis, etc., and the use them to fight the good fight against evil, bigoted humans.

It’s unclear how closely it will follow the BBC show, where the group was not only involved in saving humanity from threats on a weekly basis but also part of a galactic organization that monitored and assisted telepaths—the trailer features a lot of Mark Pellegrino (Lucifer from Supernatural)–random trivia, he’s the uncle of Stephen Amell, aka Arrow–as Jedikiah Price chasing down our super-evolved heroes because, as Price says,: “I’m systematically rounding up your kind and wiping you out, because I am evil.”

While the shows seems to be gleefully stealing from all manner of sci-fi before it (the teleporting looks a lot like Jumper, at one point there is a force lift, followed by a frost-shock, followed by a force choke, and the hidden subway station HQ has been seen, well, everywhere) and there are clear parallels to Alphas as well as X-Men (Marvel even used the term Tomorrow People, starting in 1963, as a taxonomic designation for the X-Men and other Mutants in the Marvel Universe).

The Tomorrow People was created by Phil Klemmer (Chuck, Veronica Mars) and stars Robbie Amell (cousin to Stephen Amell of previously mentioned Arrow fame) as Stephen Jameson, Luke Mitchell as John Young and Peyton List as Cara Coburn.

 Midseason

Not content with just three new casts of incredibly good-looking people with powers, The CW has The 100 and Star Crossed set to premiere midseason.

The 100 is based on the book of the same name by Kass Morgan, and it centers on 100 petty thieves and criminals (all young and pretty, with excellent muscle tone for people born and raised on a space station) who are sent from their space station homes to post-apocalyptic Earth to see if mankind can survive on the harsh surface.

Star Crossed looks rather like District 9, if the aliens were all super-hot models who were trying to integrate into all-human US High Schools. The trailer seems to have a lot of imagery that’s set to invoke the civil rights battle of the 1960s, which doesn’t quite ring true as the only seemingly physical difference between humans and aliens are an abundance of six-packs and some tattoos. There’s also a Romeo and Juliet plot between a human girl and an alien boy. Because why else would you travel light years across galaxies if not for true love?

Returning Shows

The CW has renewed The Vampire Diaries (Thurs, 8 to 9 p.m., 10/3), Beauty and The Beast (Mon, 9 to 10 p.m., 10/7), Supernatural (Tues, 9 to 10 p.m., 10/8), The Arrow (Weds, 8 to 0 p.m., 10/9) and Nikita (Fall 2014, no air date as of yet).

 FOX, which seems to be aware that it will never, ever, ever make up for cancelling Firefly, is trying to retain some geek cache with two new shows this Fall.

Sleepy Hollow

FOX, Monday, 9 to 10 p.m., 9/16

The second most anticipated show of the Fall, directly behind Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Sleepy Hollow is created by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Fringe, Transformers, Star Trek) and is based on the short story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, by Washington Irving.

Sleepy Hollow follows Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison from Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, One Day, Parade’s End) as he is mysteriously transported to modern day Sleepy Hollow, and attempts to hunt down and stop the Headless Horseman (in the original story the Horseman is an 18th century German mercenary brought in by the English to fight during the revolutionary war) who was brought to the future as well.

Ichabod must join forces with local Sheriff Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie, Shame, 42) and adjust to cultural, societal and technological difference of the 21st century (including radically changing his racial and gender stereotypes) in order to stop the Horseman’s nightly killing spree.

With a strong cast and an all-star writing team, expectations are high the Sleepy Hollow will be the show to watch this Fall.

Sleepy Hollow rounds out its cast with Orlando Jones (Godzilla, Evolution, MadTV) as Captain Frank Irving and John Cho (Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle, Go On) as Andy Dunn.

Fox, Mon, 8 to 9 p.m., 11/4

JJ Abrams—who doesn’t seem to be content unless he has four or five projects going—is producing this sci-fi procedural starring Karl Urban (Star Trek, RED, Chronicles of Riddick, Riddick, Doom) and Michael Ealy (Sleeper Cell, Flash Forward, Underworld: Awakening) as unwilling partners in the LAPD thirty-five years in the future.

It’s typical buddy cop formula: an off couple forced to work together and eventually growing to trust and even like each other.

The twist? Karl Urban’s tough-as-nails cop, John Kennex, doesn’t trust Michael Ealy’s Dorian for one good reason: Dorian is a robot. And not just a normal, super-efficient robot, but a slightly malfunctioning one.

While the trailer gives a Deus Ex meets I, Robot vibe, and doesn’t really introduce any new themes or arguments that sci-fi fans won’t already be thoroughly versed in, both Urban and Ealy are worth watching and the trailer certainly captivated interest.

Almost Human was created by J.H. Wyman (Keen Eddie, Fringe) and J.J. Abrams is one of the executive producers, so hopes are high.

Midseason

Midseason has two more shows set to debut; Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey and Wayward Pines, though the air dates are still not announced.

Cosmos will star Neil deGrasse Tyson and was produced by Seth McFarlane and Carl Sagan’s widow (the original show was hosted by Sagan and aired on PBS). When it does air, it will air simultaneously on Fox and the NatGeo channel, expecting to launch in 48 countries in over 140 languages. Also, the bridge of Tyson’s ship looks almost exactly like the Illusive Man’s from Mass Effect. Just saying.

Wayward Pines brings Blake Crouch’s mystery/thriller novel of the same name to the small screen. M. Night Shyamalan has developed it as a multi-part series for Fox. It has been compared to Twin Peaks by just about everybody, and Fox hasn’t released very much information other than a 2014 release.

Returning Shows

Fox does not have much in the way of the Geek returning; The Following is set for a midseason premiere on Mondays, 9 to 10 p.m.; and under the heading of old-shows-don’t-die-they-go-to-mini-series, 24 is slated to return as a limited run in the Spring.

 

Print

NBC is not offering much this year for us geeks, with only one offering in the Fall. We’re hoping this is an improvement; previous years, which have had a glut of nerd-tastic shows, perhaps in some desperate attempt by NBC to gain some geek-cred (The Cape, The Event, Flash Forward, V, Bionic Women, Journeyman). This make anything with a slightly Lost-like feel strategy hasn’t fared well for the Peacock, so maybe just one new show means NBC knows it has a hit. And it case it doesn’t, it has two midseason shows ready to wash the taste from your mouth.

Dracula

NBC, Friday, 10 to 11 p.m., 10/25

A limited series with only a ten episode run, Dracula is a retelling of the classic tale by Bram Stoker. Created by Cole Hadden, with Daniel Knauf (Carnivale) as showrunner, Dracula stars Jonathon Rhys Meyers (The Tudors, Mission Impossible III) as Dracula, who returns to Victorian London to seek revenge for a betrayal years before. This is another show whose trailer draws heavy inspiration from Game of Thrones.

The plot stays somewhat in line with the book; Dracula falls for the lovely Mina, there’s a Van Helsing on hand to fight him…there’s a lot of pretty people in period clothing walking around dark London streets. If they weren’t all in their thirties it’d be a CW show.

Dracula stars Katie McGrath (Merlin), Nonso Anozie (Ender’s Game, Game of Thrones) and Thomas Kretschmann (King Kong, The Pianist, Blade II, 24).

Midseason

Two shows are slated for a midseason release: Believe, another J.J. Abrams produced show, directed by Alfonso Cuaran (Harry Potter) about a little girl with special powers and the ex-con who has been tasked to protect her (Sundays, 9 to 10 p.m.); and Crossbones, created by Neil Cross (Luther) and starring John Malkovich as the pirate Blackbird. Slated to air in 2014 on Sundays, from 10 to 11 p.m., there is little other information out there as of yet.

NBC also recently announced a mini-series adaptation of Stephen King’s Tommyknockers in 2014, but no dates or casting information has been forthcoming.

Grimm
Grimm, the best show people aren’t watching, premieres on NBC Friday, 10/25, at 9 p.m.

Returning

Returning to the Peacock this Fall are Revolution (Weds, 8 to 9 p.m., 9/25) and Grimm, Fridays, 9 to 10 p.m., which if you are not watching, start—there’s still time to catch up before the new season airs on 10/25. Community is slated for a midseason release.

Networks Waiting for Midseason to Debut All Their Geekery

Not every network has new content slated for the Fall, but midseason will serve up some highly anticipate premieres:

SyFy announced Helix with a premiere date of Jan, 2014. Ronald D. Moore (BattleStar Galactica) created the series about a group of CDC scientists sent to the Artic only to discover the fate of mankind may rest in their hands. Starring Billy Campbell (Eureka, The Killing, The 4400) and Hiroyuki Sanada (Speed Racer, Lost, The Wolverine).

TNT is bringing two shows that may not deal with a fandom in their content but certainly do with their talent: Mob City (formerly Lost Angels) stars Simon Pegg and is written and directed by Frank Darabont. The series follows the LAPD/Mob wars in Los Angeles in the 1940’s.; and Legends with Sean Bean as the best-of-the-best undercover agent who is struggling to find where his cover ends and he begins. Both shows are slated for 2014 premiere.

The Last Ship isn’t set to premiere on TBS until Summer 2014, but this Michael Bay produced end-of-the-world-via-virus show looks to be next summer’s big cable hit. The show stars Adam Baldwin (Firefly, Serenity, Chuck) and Eric Dane (Grey’s Anatomy).

Penny Dreadful is set to premiere on Showtime in 2014. Called a pschyo-sexual horror series, produced by John Logan (writer: Rango, Gladiator, Skyfall) and Sam Mendes (director: Skyfall, American Beauty) it stars Josh Hartnett, Eva Green and Billie Piper. The series will be set in turn-of-the century London and will deal with the origins of literary horror monsters such as Dorian Gray, Dracula and Frankenstein’s Monster.

Starz has Black Sails set to debut in January 2014. It is a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel, Treasure Island, set twenty years before the events in the book. Fan reaction at the San Diego Comic Con was so strong Starz has already ordered a second season. It’s got pirates, islands, beaches and rum, so all things point to a hit.

The Outlander is also set to premiere in 2014 on Starz. Based upon the bestselling novels by Diana Gabaldon, the series follows the adventures of time-traveler Claire and her Scottish husband, Jamie Fraser, as they live through historical events from the Scottish revolt under Bonnie Prince Charlie to the revolutionary war. Lots of adventure, lots of romance (and sex, to be clear) and a great deal of historically accurate details made the books a must-read; if Starz follows HBO’s example and lets the novels guide the show than expectations should remain high.

Rounding off our report are two shows which are nothing more than whisper and rumor at the moment:

The Stranger, J.J. Abrams’ bit of marketing masterpiece: just a grainy black and white video with no information at all.

The Sector is a Ridley Scott produced, sci-fi procedural a la Blade Runner. Originally picked up by Cinemax, it was dropped in 2011 but the Science Channel recently announced it is picking up the series.

American Horror Story: Coven premieres on Oct 23rd.

Returning Shows to Keep An Eye Out For

The Walking Dead returns to AMC on Sunday, Oct. 13th at 10 p.m. Season four has yet another new showrunner in Scott Gimple, who will guide the show through a season set to introduce a host of new characters joining our ragged crew in the prison as they attempt to shore up and defend against walkers and humans alike.

The American Horror Story: Coven will be returning to F/X on Weds., October 9th, at 9 pm. Continuing the tradition set in season 2, season 3 will have returning actors but a completely different st of characters and plot. Returning this season are  Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Francis Conroy and Dermot Mulroney; Kathy Bates, Patti Lupone and Angela Bassatt round out an all star cast. Coven focuses on the secret society of witches and an outside evil which is attacking them. The season will flash between modern day and 1830’s.

HBO will be bringing back Game of Thrones in the Spring of 2014. Be prepared, the show’s finished seasons are now more numerous then the remaining books…R.R. Marting better write fast.

SyFy is bringing back three shows this season: Being Human, slated for a Jan. 2014 premiere; Warehouse 13 will come back (if only for  six episodes) for its fifth and final season in 2014; and Haven premieres its fourth season on September 13 at 10 p.m. (with a guest star stint from everybody’s favorite Sheriff, Colin Ferguson).

Haven returns for season 4 on Sept 23rd. Catch up on all the episodes on Chiller.

 Starz has renewed Da Vinci’s Demons for a 2014 premiere. If you didn’t see season one, now’s the time to go back and watch (the complete season can be pre-ordered on iTunes). Created by David S. Goyer, co-writer of the The Dark Knight Trilogy, Da Vinci’s Demons is a solid show steeped in mythology and renaissance Italian/Catholic politics.

TNT is bringing Falling Skies Back for a fourth season in late Spring/Summer 2014, so check back for more information on what will happen to Mason and his regiment later.

NBC Universal Bringing Back ‘Miami Vice’, ‘Airwolf’ and ‘Knight Rider’… As Digital Comics!

We’ve been trying to keep the lid on this one for a while now and Geekscape listeners will have heard me hint at this over the past few episodes on the air. Finally, an announcement has been made that our friends at Lion Forge Comics have joined forces with NBC Universal to bring some of their most iconic 80s and 90s TV show back as digital comics. And I have the honor of writing one of them.

It’s been a lot of fun working with these guys over the past few months and for those of you headed to San Diego Comic Con, there’ll be a lot more revealed at both the Lion Forge panel and the Geekscape booth (which we are sharing with the Lion Forge guys)! Here’s the full press release, with more details to come (like what specific books we’re each working on)!

NBCUniversal, one of the world’s premier media and entertainment companies, has partnered with digital publisher Lion Forge Comics to develop licensed comic books based on popular TV shows from the 1980s and 90s. Under the agreement licensed through the NBCUniversal Television Consumer Products Group, Lion Forge will write, develop and publish digital comics based on the following shows:

 

“Airwolf”

“Knight Rider”

“Miami Vice”

“Punky Brewster”

“Saved by the Bell”

 

“Partnering with the team at Lion Forge to bring classic TV properties to life in graphic novel format was a natural step for us as we continue to identify new ways to entertain our fans in the digital space,” said Chris Lucero, director of Global Consumer Products Licensing for NBCUniversal Television. “We’re excited to give fans a chance to revisit some of their favorite shows and characters in a completely new way.”
 
Well-known writers currently signed on to work on the projects include: Joelle Sellner (Teen Titans, Jackie Chan Adventures, Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi); Jonathan London (Geekscape); Geoffrey Thorne (Leverage, Ben 10) and David Gorden (Catalyst Prime: Accel and
Catalyst Prime: Quincredible).
 
Currently, Jason Johnson (Wetworks, Godstorm) and Lion Forge’s own Carl Reed and Lorenzo Lizana are on board as artists.
 
“From hugely popular characters such as Crockett and Tubbs, Zack Morris and Punky Brewster to highly stylized music and clothing choices, these TV franchises have had a significant impact on pop culture,” said David Steward, CEO, Lion Forge. “We here at Lion Forge are looking forward to extending that influence by creating visually appealing and entertaining experiences on mobile devices for a whole new generation of fans.”
 
The comics are planned for distribution in Q3 and Q4 2013, and will be available through the Amazon Kindle Bookstore, Apple iBooks, Barnes & Noble’s The Nook Book Store and Kobo.
 
Lion Forge executives will participate on a panel at Comic-Con International: San Diego from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. PDT on Saturday, July 20, in Room: 26AB (SDCC), where they will discuss these and other properties in development.

Watch The Trailer For J.J. Abrams And Alfonso Cuarón’s ‘Believe’

I don’t think that this has been officially released (meaning that you’re about to watch a low-res, poor quality video), but the first trailer for J.J. Abrams (LOST, Star Trek) and Alfonso Caurón’s (Gravity, Children of Men) NBC pilot Believe has made its way online.

I’m a big fan of both their work, so you better believe that I’ll be watching Believe when it hits NBC. Alfonso Caurón’s Children of Men remains one of the most impressive films that I’ve ever seen, and his upcoming Gravity looks absolutely terrifying. I was also a big fan of LOST, and of course I enjoyed Abrams take on Star Trek. I can’t imagine what we’re in store for with the two working together on this project.

‘Community’ Renewed For Fifth Season!

Maybe this isn’t the darkest timeline after all…

It’s surprising news, but NBC’s long trouble Community has been renewed for a fifth season. The episode count has not yet been revealed, but it’s a safe bet that we’ll get at least 13.

I’ve been a fan of the show since it first premiered in 2009, and it’s been shocking to hear of the show’s renewal every year since then. Season four has suffered from both the worst ratings and the worst episodes, so I was really not expecting another year of content.

Serializing the Classics: Can Iconic Films Make It On The Small Screen?

As you likely know, the Psycho and Hannibal Lecter series of films have now been given the contemporary prequel treatment on the small screen. In the last 40 days, Bates Motel debuted on A&E, while Hannibal premiered on NBC during the WonderCon weekend. These two films are among the most iconic in movie history. The question is, if we already know where the series’ must end, how liberal can the television series’ that fill in the gaps really be?

The newer of the two series’, Hannibal so far seems most likely to succeed. Despite being on a network long-known for letting good shows die rather quickly (typically by canceling early), Hannibal seems to be well produced and scripted. The series stars Mads Mikkelsen (CASINO ROYALE) as the titular Dr. Hannibal Lecter, Laurence Fishburne (THE MATRIX TRILOGY) as Jack Crawford and Hugh Dancy (ADAM) as a slightly tweaked version of FBI profiler Will Graham. Fans have seen glimpses of who Will Graham was before Dr. Lecter infected his life, but now we’ll see a different side as it is stated that he likely has Asperger’s Syndrome (a much milder form of Autism). This helps explain the wild imagination and almost total empathy, while shedding light on why he insists on limited social interaction and almost no eye contact. It also fits with the “all business” personality of the character that we saw from Edward Norton in Red Dragon. What we really need to see is how the “good” doctor progresses throughout the series. At the moment, he’s played rather well by Mikkelsen, though not nearly as creepily as by Hopkins. Not yet anyway. That may occur as we get farther down the line. Most of the menace from the character is what we, as fans, infer upon it. Since we know the endgame, we read more into it than may even be there, but I get the feeling that it’s exactly what the show runners are banking on at this point. NBC isn’t skimping on the creepy/shock factor for the crimes that the team investigates, that’s for sure. There are 13 episodes ordered for the first season, and so far they’re rather good, but fans deserve and desire more, and we’re hoping the content keeps improving.

Bates Motel is the prequel series to Alfred Hitchcock’s most (in)famous film, Psycho. Although we never saw her alive in the film or its sequels, the first certainly gave us a brief insight into Norma Bates. The first few episodes have been very rich and filled with decent characters, but Norman doesn’t yet feel like the Bates we’ve all come to know and be scared of. There’s a creepy factor coming off of Freddie Highmore (CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY) that works for a young Norman Bates, but what I didn’t expect was for him to be a much less socially awkward version of the Norman Bates we all know and hate. Then there’s the real psychopath, his mother Norma, played wonderfully by Vera Farmiga (THE DEPARTED). While she may seem to be little more than a devoted mother, there’s clearly an underlying evil that I was surprised to see in just the first episode.  From there, every awkward moment I’ve seen appears to have the classic Psycho music in the background. Halfway throughout the ten episode first season, it’s already been a very promising start, worthy of the beloved series of horror films.

We should expect a second season, at least for Bates Motel, as it has already been ordered. We’ll be waiting awhile for NBC  to come to their senses and order a second season of Hannibal. As for whether they’ll do justice to the old stuff, we’ll have to take a look back after the end of these first seasons, but at present they’re working their way to becoming rather impressive. Now, I’d love to tell you it feels exactly the same, but as these characters are younger than their established selves, the fandom will have to decide.

MSN & XBox Looking To Bring ‘Heroes’ Back From The Dead

It may be time to save the world again because the cult hit Heroes may be the next series to be brought back from the dead. MSN is currently looking to start bringing out original programming via Xbox and are currently is in talks to relaunch the Universal franchise.

The possible relaunch will see the series return with new stories and heroes, while also mixing in cameos from the original cast of the series that ran for four sesasons on NBC. Following the show’s cancellation, there were rumors for quite some time of a possible TV movie or mini-series to wrap up the storylines, though no such project ever saw the light of day.

Watch A Creepy New Promo For NBC’s ‘Hannibal’!

Thus far, marketing for NBC’s upcoming Hannibal has failed to excite me on the same level that A&E’s Bates Motel has. Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited as hell for Hannibal, and it doesn’t look bad by any means, but A&E has simply done a phenomenal job prepping and promoing Bates Motel, that it would be tough for any upcoming series to match.

 

NBC today released a new preview for Hannibal, which is set to premiere in just under a month, on April 4th. The trailer features plenty of new footage, and definitely does well at setting the tone for the coming series.

Laura Ramsey Lands Lead In NBC’s ‘The Sixth Gun’ Pilot

Deadline reports that Laura Ramsey (The Ruins) has landed the lead in the Carlton Cuse produced pilot of The Sixth Gun for NBC, which is based on Cullen Bunn’s sci-fi western graphic novel series of the same name. The actress will play a farmer’s daughter named Becky Montcrief, a the girl who finds the mysterious “Sixth Gun”.

In the comic series there are six mythical guns, each with their own other-worldly powers, and this one is the most powerful of the bunch. Ramsey will be joined by W. Earl Brown, Graham McTavish and Aldis Hodge were who also cast in the pilot today.

NBC’s ‘Hannibal’ Gets A Teaser Trailer!

It’s been a busy week for NBC’s Hannibal. First the show got a cool new piece of key art, just a day later the premiere date was revealed, and now the first teaser for the show has been released!

 

The teaser is short, but very sweet; the show certainly looks to have a Dexter feel to it, as Hannibal Lecter is both working with the police, and being the scarily disturbing fellow that we all know and love.

NBC’s ‘Hannibal’ Gets A Premiere Date!

Following yesterday’s key art reveal for NBC’s Hannibal, showrunner Brian Fuller has (finally) announced the date of the long-awaited series premiere.

 


 

Awesome. While it seems like everyone was expecting Hannibal to premiere in either Summer or Fall, we’re getting a Spring launch of the series. I’m pretty excited for this one; we haven’t seen a trailer yet, but the images revealed so far have all looked pretty great.

 

This puts Hannibal’s premiere just a month after that other contemporary serial killer prequel series (which also looks fantastic), Bates Motel.

New Promo Image Revealed For NBC’s ‘Hannibal’!

It’s been some time since we’ve seen or heard anything come out of NBC’s currently-in-production Hannibal prequel (we saw a first batch of images all the way back in October), so it’s nice to know that someone over there is thinking about us.

 

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, NBC has released a romantic new piece of key art for the series. The image features Hannibal himself (Mads Mikkelsen) resting his chin on an eerily white skull while plenty of other bones (and a bouquet of roses) litter the table in front of him. Creepy.

‘Community’ Is Coming: Watch An ‘Epic’ New Trailer!

Community is coming. Finally. With just a few more days until the show is slated to return, it’s (hopefully) too late for NBC to push it again.

 

The anticipated fourth season of the sitcom will premiere this Thursday, February 7th. The season opener looks to be a parody of The Hunger Games, and it actually looks pretty wonderful.

Of course, just about every Greendale fan is wary about this year’s offering. After a long year of the show being delayed, its creator and showrunner Dan Harmon being fired (with many of the writer’s quitting afterwards in protest), and star Chevy Chase quitting midway through production, it could be a dark, dark year at Greendale Community College.

 

In any case, I love the cast and I love the characters, so I’m hoping for the best. Watch a new trailer for the season below, and let us know what you think!

 

NBC’s ‘The Sixth Gun’ Pilot Lands A Director

Last week it was revealed that NBC had ordered a pilot based on Cullen Bunn’s The Sixth Gun, a sci-fi western graphic novel series that is set during the Civil War era that puts a gunslinger up against dark forces with an innocent girl’s soul sitting in the cross hairs. Now it has been revealed that Jeffrey Reiner (Friday Night Lights, Awake) has been brought on to direct the upcoming pilot. No other details have been revealed yet, but we should expect to hear about some casting next.

NBC Orders Pilot For ‘The Sixth Gun’ TV Adaptation

NBC has committed to a pilot for Cullen Bunn’s The Sixth Gun, a sci-fi western graphic novel series that is set during the Civil War era that puts a gunslinger up against dark forces with an innocent girl’s soul sitting in the cross hairs. The pilot will be jointly spearheaded by producer Carlton Cuse (Lost) and screenwriter Ryan Condal (Hercules: The Thracian Wars).

“During the darkest days of the Civil War, wicked cutthroats came into possession of six pistols of otherworldly power. In time the Sixth Gun, the most dangerous of the weapons, vanished. When the gun surfaces in the hands of an innocent girl, dark forces reawaken. Vile men thought long dead set their sights on retrieving the gun and killing the girl. Only Drake Sinclair, a gunfighter with a shadowy past, stands in their way.”

‘Community’ Is Coming! Watch Some Hilarious New Clips!

Can you believe that we’re just 16 days away from seeing a new episode of Community. Did you ever think it would happen? That being said, 16 days is still plenty of time for another delay, so don’t uncross your fingers just yet (it probably won’t happen, NBC is just… well, NBC)!

 

NBC has released two new clips (and a featurette) for the sitcom’s fourth season. As far as I’m concerned, it’s like a breath of fresh air to see these characters again; we’ve been waiting for this for far too long.

 

After all the delays, after all the firings and staff quitting, and after the season was cut by half, Community is almost here: let’s just hope it’s at least close to what it once was. Check out the clips below, and let us know what you think!

‘Community’ Premieres February 7th – Watch A Sneak Peek!

Bearing further delays, Community fans (like me!) are just 28 days away from FINALLY seeing a new episode.

 

NBC today released a sneak peek of the season four premiere History 101; the clip features a hilarious parody of The Hunger Games, which looks to work perfectly in the given context.

 

How freaking excited are you for this show to come back? As hard of a year as it’s been for Community and its fans, I can’t wait for it to be back on air. After all that’s happened: Dan Harmon’s firing (and many of the show’s writers quitting in protest), numerous delays, and Chevy Chase quitting, hopefully at its core, Community won’t have changed too much.

Costanza! Jason Alexander To Guest On ‘Community’

George Costanza himself, Jason Alexender is headed back to community college. Not really of course, but he will guest starring on an upcoming episode of NBC’s troubled Community.

The actor has just revealed the (awesome) news via Twitter. Shortly afterwards TV Line was able to confirm, and Community fans went wild. No information has been revealed on who Alexander will play or what the episode will be about.

After numerous delays, the firing of creator Dan Harmon, and last week’s departure of Chevy Chase, it’s really great to hear some positive Community news for once. The fourth season is finally set to premiere on October 19 February 7th.

Chevy Chase Drops Out Of ‘Community’

Our favourite study group just lost one of its members.

Deadline has reported that Chevy Chase has left NBC’s troubled sitcom Community, which was initially set to premiere its fourth season last month. Rumours that Chase was at his wits end with the show have been swirling for months now, beginning in April when a leaked voicemail publicized his hate for Community creator Dan Harmon.

That being said, his departure isn’t the biggest surprise, as it’s been know that Chase has been unhappy with the show since season two was airing in 2011. The sitcom has had an extremely tough year, with creator Dan Harmon being fired (with most of the writers following in protest), numerous delays between airings and premieres, and now this. It seems as though the half-sized fourth season is going to be a sad goodbye to our favourite community college.

Most of the season had already been filmed before this decision, so it’s said that only the final few episodes will be missing Mr. Hawthorne. In any case, he won’t be a part of 4×13, which unless a ratings miracle happens, is very likely to be the series finale.

I’m bummed out about this. Anyone else? Pierce may have been a racist, misunderstood old bigot, but he was our racist, misunderstood old bigot. Maybe now they’ll finally let Chang in the group?

We’ll miss you Pierce, thanks for all your hard work.

‘Community’ Gets A Premiere Date… Months And Months From Now

Earlier this month NBC delayed the season 4 premiere of Community indefinitely. The news came just 10 days before the set date, and was horrible news for fans everywhere.

It appears as though a new date has now be set. Deadline reports (later followed by cast member tweets) that the premiere date is set for February 7th… months and months from now.

It sucks, and there isn’t much else to say. We should have already seen two episodes, and instead we’ll be waiting 100 more days to even see one. The only positive here is that the show is returning to its original timeslot rather than moving to Friday as initially reported.

100 more days. Plenty of time to catch up on Whitney.

NBC Passes On ‘The Office’ Spin-Off ‘The Farm’

To many fans disappointment NBC’s long-running comedy series The Office is coming to an end after this season. There were plans for a spin-off that would center on Rainn Wilson’s Dwight in the works. This would mean you’d get more The Office-ish material with the chance of some of your favorites stopping by for a visit. Well, sorry for the bad news guys but it appears things are really coming to an end.

 

NBC has chosen to pass on the pilot for the spin-off, titled The Farm, which would see Dwight run a bed and breakfast inn. The new series was to star Wilson alongside Thomas Middleditch as Dwight’s brother and Majandra Delfino as his sister. However, the pilot will still air as an episode of The Office later this season, as originally intended.

Take A Bite Out Of This: NBC Releases First Photos From ‘Hannibal’

Today NBC released (via Entertainment Weekly) a first look at their upcoming crime thriller Hannibal. I’m quite excited for the series, though the way that it’s described almost sounds as though it will have a heavy Dexter vibe to it.

October 19th Is A State Of Mind: Troy and Abed Offer An Explanation Of The ‘Community’ Delay

Well, we may not be getting the Community premiere that we were all eagerly awaiting (nor even a date when we might be able to see it), but today the cast released a small gift for us fans that may slightly soften the blow.

If you weren’t yet aware, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the fourth season of fan-favourite Community will not be airing tonight. NBC made the announcement that they do in fact hate us, just 10 days before the scheduled premiere date.

The cast released a hilarious and cool video today, showing that they’re thinking of us fans. I don’t want to spoil anything, so just give it a watch below, and let us know what you think!

‘Mockingbird Lane’ Gets A Teaser!

As we reported earlier this week, NBC’s cancelled Munsters reboot would be seeing its pilot air as a Halloween special. NBC later announce that the airing would take place on October 26th.

The network today released a teaser for the upcoming special, which was directed by Bryan Singer:

The pilot, written by Bryan Fuller and to be directed by Bryan Singer, is described as a reinvention of the 1960s sitcom about The Munsters, a family of “monsters” — vampires, werewolves and Frankenstein, and their “plain” cousin (Charity Wakefield) — that will feature striking visuals in the vein of Fuller’s ABC dramedy Pushing Daisies. O’Connell will play family patriarch, the handsome and gangly Herman Munster, a great dad and devoted husband. He is married to Lily, a vampire, with whom he has fathered a 10-year-old boy, Eddie (Mason Cook). Strong but sentimental, Herman works at a funeral home, and worries that Eddie’s transformation into a werewolf and burgeoning awareness of his family’s origins will crush the boy’s spirit.

NBC To Air ‘Mockingbird Lane’ Pilot As Halloween Special

Been looking forward to NBC’s Mockingbird Lane, the remake of The Munsters? According to the The Hollywood Reporter NBC will be unveiling the pilot for the series, which was directed by Bryan Singer (X-Men), as a Halloween special. While this is good news for you who want to finally see the pilot there is a bit of bad news surrounding the pilot. Recently it was revealed that NBC isn’t too sure that they even want to move forward with the series. Which, is a bit odd due to the show has already reportedly cost them around $10 million.
