July is coming up shortly. It is a month of conventions, BBQs, and (hopefully) air-conditioning. Oh yeah, and vampire-slaying. That last one is courtesy of Netflix’s upcoming series, Castlevania, based on the long-running video game series of the same name. The first teaser trailer for the show was released yesterday and it is sure to get your blood pumping! The animation has a definite anime flavor to it.

The official synopsis cleanly describes Castlvania‘s plot:

Inspired by the classic video game series, Castlevania is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself. The animated series written by best-selling author and comic book icon Warren Ellis and executive produced by Warren Ellis, Kevin Kolde, Fred Seibert and Adi Shankar.

You can take a gander at the trailer below. And post what you think of it in the comments. I know I am pretty psyched to watch this new show!

2 years ago, a disgruntled Koji Igarashi left Konami to make the Castlevania game of his dreams that Konami didn’t want to make. He launched the mega popular Kickstarter for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, and has been hard at work on the game ever since then. They hit tons of stretch goals, including one that would get the game on the Wii U. Well, we all know that the Wii U essentially kicked the bucket back in late 2015, and with the recent success of the Nintendo Switch, there have been some major changes.

Just like Yooka Laylee a couple of months back, Igarashi announced today in the newest update that Bloodstained is no longer coming out for Nintendo’s red headed gamepad forcing step child. Instead, the game will launch on the Switch, and backers who once backed the Wii U version can now change to the Switch with ease, as well as other platforms. While sad for Wii U owners, this is another great game heading to the Switch via 3rd party support, and we couldn’t be happier for it.

What do you think? Which version of Bloodstained will you be getting? Check out the announcement right here.

Briefly: We’ve only known that the series is officially in the works for a couple of weeks at this point, but Netflix has just released the very first teaser poster for its upcoming Castlevania series.

Inspired by the classic video game series, “Castlevania” is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself. The animated series is from Frederator Studios, a Wow! Unlimited Media company, written by best-selling author and comic book icon Warren Ellis and executive produced by Warren Ellis, Kevin Kolde, Fred Seibert, and Adi Shankar.

Shankar took to Facebook late last night to reveal the image and to reiterate that the series will launch later this year.

It’s been some time since I’ve really played a Castlevania title, but as a huge fan of the series growing up, with the incredible team behind the project, this is going to be bad ass.

Take a look at the image below, and let us know if you’re excited!

After over 10 years in development, Castlevania will finally be getting its due.

This evening while talking about their upcoming project, Netflix announced that they are hard at work on a Netflix series for the critically acclaimed Konami series created by Koji Igarashi. No specific date has been announced, but they’re hoping to have it out by 2017. The series will be split into 4 parts and will be written and produced by one of the original Dead Space writers, and pretty major comic book writer and all around idea man, Warren Ellis. Are you excited about this announcement? What game series are you hoping Netflix tackles afterwards? Tell us in the comments below!

Since it was announced, one of the most anticipated gaming products this holiday season has been the NES Classic Edition. As a literal blast from the past, this mini console comes pre-loaded with 30 games from years past, including games from the Super Mario Bros., Legend of Zelda and Final Fantasy. Packaged with an HDMI cable for modern TV’s and capture devices, it looks to deliver a way to bring classic gaming into the modern era with ease.

Once I got the chance to sit down and actually play with it, the late 80’s came rushing back, as if the time where controllers only had two buttons and 1080P was replaced with 8-Bits never left. Playing the classic Castlevania, the emulation was picture perfect, fitting just right with these modern HDTV’s. The controller felt lighter than I remember, with the same rectangular block so many of us grew up with, to the point where it feels awfully weird not to have shoulder buttons anymore. That didn’t keep me from slaying Dracula’s worst minions with ease, but making the switch after so many years definitely takes a slight mental adjustment.

For those who want to switch up their viewing experience, the unit will have three different aspect ratios to choose from while playing. The standard mode is a pixel perfect recreation of the old days of gaming, meaning there will be a ton of empty space towards the left and right side. If you want to make sure no space is wasted, you can opt for the full screen option in exchange for some stretched out models, or an in between mode that keeps the characters more proportioned while using up more of the screen.

Using an AC adapter that can plug in to either a wall socket or a USB charger, you should never have trouble finding a place to power the thing. Keeping in mind how many games that the $59.99 price point gets you, I can see this being the perfect travel companion when you’re traveling to a hotel, a friend’s place, or if you just want to show off the mini console. Throw in the fact that the controller works as a Classic Controller for Wii and Wii U Virtual Console games means you’ll get even more mileage out of your purchase.

What games are you most looking forward to re-playing, and will you be with us in line when the unit releases on November 11? Share your thoughts below!

The timing on this news couldn’t be MORE poignant, since on this week’s Geekscape we asked you what Nintendo series would you like seen made into a movie and by which director. While not a NINTENDO first party, Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse is getting moved onto celluloid!

Producer Adi Shankhar (Power/Rangers, Punisher: Dirty Laundry, Voices) has a flair for the violent and over the top. So when it was announced that he was joining up with animation house Frederator (Adventure Time, Fairly OddParents, Chalkzone) we couldn’t have been more excited!

In an interview with Collider this morning, Shankar said:

There will be a lot [Violence]. The goal is to bring hard hitting anime to the America and be America’s first animated series for adults.

He went on to say that he wants the show to have the look and feel of classic Anime’s like Akira and Ninja Scroll.

I can’t be MORE hype for this project! Shankar really knows how to bring out the good in his projects, and fans of Castlevania III are all much older now and can appreciate the extra violence he is sure to bring.

No word on release date or anything, but keep an eye out here on Geekscape because you can GUARANTEE I will be keeping you up on the project!

Koji Igarashi took to Kickstarter with the intention of reviving what he’s coining the “Koji-Vania” genre that was made famous when he co-directed Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. To say that he was successful would be an understatement.

Following in the footsteps of last week’s Yooka-Laylee, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night proved that fans are more than willing to fork over the cash to get their 2D Castlevania fix. In less than 24 hours, the project’s Kickstarter page raised the $500,000 needed to fund the project, signaling another resounding rejection of a major publisher’s decision to pass on classic games.

Led by Igarashi, Bloodstained looks to capture the spirit of Konami’s series by creating an exploration platformer complete with RPG elements, memorable bosses and a variety of weapons, (including a whip!) As Miriam, an alchemist who carries the magi-crystal curse, she will be tasked with exploring a castle that attracts demons, all while discovering the reasons for why her friend, Gebel, has summoned it. Using her alchemic know-how to craft weapons along the way, it’s looking like she’ll fill the void that the Belmonts have left behind.

Developed by Inti. Creates, (of Mega Man 9, 10, Zero and Azure Striker Gunvolt fame,) and bringing in the voice talents of David Hayter, (which is surely a jab at Iga’s former publisher,) the promises that Bloodstained is making is enough of a reason for any 2D fan to get excited.

Want to contribute? As of this writing, the project is sitting at $1.5 million, with most of its stretch goals met! By participating in the community through creating fan art, interacting on Twitter, and a variety of other tasks, more stretch goals and giveaways will unlock as we approach the funding date. To donate, visit the Kickstarter page, and let us know what you hope Bloodstained will deliver!

Looking forward to the final chapter of the Lords of Shadow series? How does a free Castlevania game sound? Konami is offering PlayStation owners in North and South America quite a deal.

By pre-ordering Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 from the PlayStation Network, customers will automatically receive Mirror of Fate HD along with an exclusive Lords of Shadow 2 Dynamic Theme for Playstation 3. Originally released last March for the Nintendo 3DS, Mirror of Fate follows the exploits of Simon Belmont and Trevor Belmont, the latter determined to end Dracula’s life once and for all. The game is set before the events of Lords of Shadow 2,  making it a perfect companion piece for those looking to get the most of out of their Castlevania experience.

Those looking to take advantage of this deal have until February 25 to do so when Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 goes on sale– available on Playstation 3, XBOX 360, and PC. Of course, those in Europe who already have Mirror of Fate for the Nintendo 3DS yet want some sweet Castlevania goods can still pre-order the Dracula’s Tomb Premium Edition (pictured below).

Source: Konami Press Release (February 18, 2014)

It’s the first official day of the best gathering of geeks all year. Derek, Juan, and I were invited up to the Konami Gaming Lounge at the Westin. We met up with Robert the ruff and grumble (and awesome) driver at noon today. Once inside the lounge, we were greeted by the team at Konami and shown the setup. We got our hands on the three games present: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, Pro Evo Soccer 2014 and the much anticipated (and just released) Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection.

Derek and I grabbed a beer and went upstairs to the MGS room, while Juan hit up Castlevania on the PS3. Metal Gear Collection certainly has all the MGS Games a fan would want: pretty much all of them. We sat down with some new friends and got the rundown. All the games but MGS 4 are on the same disk, with MGS 1 and the VR missions being PSN downloads. The collection also includes two digital graphic novels that were originally on the PSP, and have all updated with glorious motion graphics. The collection also includes an amazing 100-page art book that chronicles the history of MGS art.

After that we headed downstairs and caught up with Juan. He had been playing Castlevania and only had good things to say, so I then hopped on the PC version and played through the demo. The PC version looks a lot better than the PS3 version that was there. The edges were much sharper and it played much more smoothly. The game controls are very tight, it felt very DMC/ God of War but that isn’t a bad thing. The two set pieces we had available had awesome atmosphere and the mood was perfect.

The last game we got our hands on was Pro Evo Soccer 2014. The game was far from done, with a late fall anticipated release date. The graphics weren’t yet complete, but the player models were great. The game physics were extremely fluid and everything felt very real. The juggling and crossovers were intuitive and it felt as if they added a lot of depth to this year’s edition of the game. The only weird thing was that when we were playing it, the players in the background were getting into fights or getting red carded all over the place. Nothing of our doing was causing these incidents. We would suddenly be presented with a replay of a bad kick to the face that occurred on practically the opposite side of the pitch. The funniest moment was when two of my team mates did synchronous bicycle kicks into the chest of one of Derek’s team all Mortal Kombat style.

The presence Konami has  at SDCC is very strong, their upcoming lineup is fantastic and everything we played was very enjoyable. Be sure to check them out on the floor right accross from the Geekscape booth row 3900!

Moments ago, Konami outlined their plans for E3 next week with a few bombshells along the way. Below are the bullet points of the announcements that the company made during their third annual pre-show.

Konami’s mobile strategy includes a group of new games and apps. These include Domo Jump, MLB Live Challenge, Slot Revolution and Casino League: Texas Hold ‘Em.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 is moving forward with a series of new features that look to make the game as realistic as possible. Using new physics powered by the Fox Engine, PES looks to bring the sport to life with independent player and ball control, realistic strategies and behaviors, a morale system that affects player performance and true to life animations.

MGSV: The Phantom Pain will take place in 1984, and will have a narrative that focuses on race and revenge. Kiefer Sutherland is being brought in to be the new voice of Snake, which includes extensive facial motion capture for main characters and enemies alike, One of the main goals of the game is to mirror live action films, using facial expressions and tone of voice to convey emotions.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 was the meat of this presentation. The game will pick up after the first Lords of Shadow epilogue. Dracula will have three new abilities, including the cursed claws, blood whip and void sword, promising an extra level of strategy. The game is ditching the level based structure of its predecessor for a large world to explore. LoS2 is coming to PS3, Xbox 360 and PC this Winter.

Check out the conference below and let us know what you’re excited about! Keep your eyes peeled for more details on the above announcements throughout the day.

Those who are salavating for their next DS Castlevania title or are anxious to dive back in to the Lords of Shadow universe will have to wait a little longer.

Konami commented to Game Informer that the upcoming 2D platformer is being pushed back from its original fall 2012 release window to early 2013. No reason was given, but the game seemed to be shaping up nicely at E3, so a little extra time couldn’t hurt.

Once a staple of the DS lineup, a Castlevania game hasn’t been released for the portable since 2008’s Order of Ecclesia. While I personally wasn’t a big fan of Lords of Shadow, going back to the Metroidvania style of play peaks my interest. And I can’t lie, playing as Alucard and the Belmonts again is always an exciting thought.

Check back for updates for both Mirror of Fate and Lords of Shadow 2 as they become available.
