I have a confession; since Marvel’s Secret Wars began back in May I have pretty much taken a break from reading all of their properties. However, just like any addict, I began to get the itch to jump back in again. The options of short series’ to read right now is overwhelming so I decided just to pick one and go with it. That’s how I started reading Brian Michael Bendis’ and Andrea Sorrentino’s Old Man Logan.

Old Man Logan was originally conceived as an eight-issue arc by the creative team of Mark Millar and Steve McNiven that ran through Wolverine #66-72 and ended in Wolverine: Old Man Logan Giant-Size. It received high praise from fans and reviewers alike so it goes without saying that Bendis and Sorrentino have big shoes to fill, and so far they haven’t quite been able to.

In this version of the tale, we meet Logan who has been ruined by two major events in his life. First, from Mysterio secretly manipulating him into killing all of his fellow X-Men and second, the Hulk and his gang murdering his wife and child. The first issue was promising. There were a few necessary pages of setup but for the most part it rolls at a pretty good pace and is dripping with potential by the end of the issue. Unfortunately, that potential has yet to be fulfilled.

As I continued reading into the second, third and fourth issues a problem surfaced, the story fails to gain any substance. It lacks an overarching story arc and feels like a realm of the week with Logan, usually literally, being thrown into a different setting every issue. Bendis does little to make any of Logan’s interactions with other characters have meaning as they are seemingly forgotten in the next issue. The book isn’t all bad though, what it lacks in storytelling it makes up for with it’s art.

There is no doubt that the best part of Old Man Logan is Sorrentino’s art. While Logan jumping from setting to setting lessens the quality of the story, it allows Sorrentino to really show off his artistic range. He transitions Logan from the futuristic Technopolis to the hell-like, symbiote and zombie covered Deadlands with ease. His take on each of the many characters Logan meets along the way, from Sabretooth to Iron Man, are all well handled. I was blown away by his ability to capture Apocalypse’s intimidating and god-like presence. Can someone please reference this while trying to translate him onto the big screen? Please. While I favoured Sorrentino’s larger panels and two page spreads, he did a great job of managing the small, quick action panels that frequently appeared during battle sequences.

Apocalypse
The way Apocalypse should be.
Technopolis
The futuristic Technopolis.

At the end of the day, there’s enough in this series for me to check out the fifth and final issue. Sorrentino’s pencils more than make up for the book’s lack of substance. Hopefully Bendis introduces some sort of payoff to wrap series the up but if not, at least it will be pretty to look at. If you’re reading this, and haven’t read Millar and McNiven’s Wolverine: Old Man Logan, I’d strongly suggest skipping this version and picking that up but if you’ve already read it and want more Old Man Logan, you’ll probably be able to find something you like here.

Coming from Deadline is a rumor concerning Léa Seydoux, the new “Bond” girl set to star in this year’s Spectre. Apparently she’s been offered a major female role, that of Bella Donna Bourdeux, in the Channing Tatum-led Gambit.

Bella Donna and Gambit were like a reverse Romeo and Juliet. Childhood friends despite their families of thieves being on the opposing sides of a grudge. A marriage was brokered between the two kids in an effort to unite the families (for… reasons?) until Bella Donna’s brother challenges Gambit to a fight to the death and gets his ass womped. Gambit wins, and leaves New Orleans and Bella Donna.

As for Léa, you’ve seen her rock in Inglorious BasterdsBlue is the Warmest ColorMidnight in Paris …okay fine, you didn’t see those, you uncultured swine. But you did see her in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. She was kicked down the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. I watched the movie on a flight to Paris. It wasn’t helping.

Tatum is still a mutant!

Earlier this week it was reported that Magic Mike and Jump Street star Channing Tatum hit a rough spot in his negotiations with 20th Century Fox over Gambit, a spin-off of their X-Men franchise. If you were super into the idea of Tatum and his abs being the Cajun card dealer, you can rest easy. He’s going forward as Gambit.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tatum and the studio have reached an agreement and Gambit continues. Somewhere, Taylor Kitsch is feeling pretty bummed.

Sources say that Tatum and the studio did hit a sensitive spot in negotiations, but such back-and-forth is a normal part of top-level talent dealmaking. The Magic Mike star’s participation hardly was in any real danger because the actor already had invested quite a bit in the superhero part. Tatum has been attached to the movie (loosely then officially) as both actor and producer for a few years and even made a surprise appearance at Fox’s X-Men panel at Comic-Con in July.

Now that’s out of the way, can we dwell on the fact that there’s going to be an official, stand-alone Gambit movie? Like, that is where I want to focus on, because of all the X-Men… GambitReally?

I thought Gambit was his dream role. What the hell?

TheWrap is reporting that Gambit, a spin-off of Fox’s X-Men series slated for release on Oct. 7, 2016 may have lost Channing Tatum. His reps are still in “active discussion,” but TheWrap hints that Tatum is feeling there are “greater ambitions” beyond the superhero.

Much ado was made about Tatum’s passion for the character. Portraying the card-dealing, staff-wielding mutant had been a dream for the Magic Mike star, and he was at Comic-Con this year promoting the hell out of it. I’m not sure what has changed since for him, but perhaps he’s taking his transition behind the camera — another ambition of his — a lot sooner than he planned. But couldn’t he have done that with the clout he had in getting Gambit greenlit?

It’s worth noting that Tatum is tapped to reprise his Jump Street role for 23 Jump Street, also due next year. Gambit is being directed by Rupert Wyatt.

X-Men: Apocalypse news has been popping this past week!  Today new photos of the characters have been released by 20th Century Fox and we are getting our first good look at Nightcrawler, Cyclops, and Jubilee!  Check out the new photo’s released below:

Boy do these pictures look 80’s (the decade Apocalypse will take place)! And I absolutely love it.  The punk Storm look, the attention to detail on Nightcrawler, and Sansa Stark, portraying Jean Grey, not being covered in bruises all add up to a lot of awesome.  X-men: Apocalypse hits your local theater May 27, 2016.

Earlier today, X-Men director Bryan Singer announced on the set of X-Men: Apocalypse via the Periscope app, which I genuinely still don’t understand, a new “Rogue Cut” of X-Men: Days of Future Past to include a mystery, fan-favorite mutant! Who could it be?

unnamed

Kidding. It’s Rogue. Anna Paquin’s role in Days of Future Past was left on the cutting room floor, but now in a home video rerelease diehard Rogue (and I guess Anna Paquin) fans will get to see their favorite do some mind stuff to Wolverine.

There’s still more to learn, but all we know is that the cut will be released on DVD, Blu-ray, and Digital HD on July 14.

Briefly: Just days after confirming that Ben Hardy would be playing Angel in next year’s X-Men: Apocalypse, the director has again taken to Twitter (and Instagram) to reveal another mutant (and cast member) for the anticipated film.

Attack of the Show! and The Newsroom actress Olivia Munn has been tapped to play Betsy Braddock / Psylocke in the film. In case you’re not familiar with the character, Wikipedia states that “Originally presented as a precognitive in the pages of Captain Britain and then as a telepath, the character eventually acquired the body, skills and elements of personality of a Japanese female ninja known as Kwannon. Later, Psylocke somehow acquired the telekinesis of Jean Grey.” Sounds pretty bad-ass.

Excited to welcome @oliviamunn as Betsy Braddock! #Psylocke #XmenApocalypse #XMEN

With three mutant filled feature films set to arrive from Fox next year (X-Men: Apocalypse, Gambit, and Deadpool), things are about to get even busier for comic book fans. Are you down for Olivia Munn as Pyslocke? Is there someone else you’d rather see in the role? Sound out below!

Ryan Reynolds appeared on Extra to discuss the upcoming Deadpool movie and its PG-13 rating. It’s a startling interview, and the actor — a staunch supporter of the character to be as “R”-rated as possible — opens up about his change of heart. But he does express his disappointment, as well as the fans’ negative reactions about the direction the film will be going in.

Deadpool is still set for release next year.

I’m not sure how Hugh Jackman feels about his Wolverine role anymore. On numerous occasions I’ve heard him rave about how he could do something like forty more movies as the Canadian beast, and other times I hear he’s ready to quit. I don’t fault Jackman for finding the role tiresome as an actor; beyond needing to be so physically ripped, it can get boring for anybody playing the same dude for over twelve or thirteen years. But he’s so natural as Logan too, it’s kind of a bummer that there will inevitably be a time when the Wolverine we see on screen isn’t Hugh Jackman.

But are we closer to that day than we realize? Hugh Jackman posted on his Instagram today this oddly cryptic-but-blatant photo.

Screen Shot 2015-03-28 at 2.14.13 PM

Maybe I’m so out of the loop but is Wolverine 3 even in production right now? The status of that movie hasn’t been my priority so I kind of glaze over any news bits that finds their way online, which is a shining example of responsible journalism.

Coming straight from the man himself, this should put to rest any rumors about Jackman’s further involvement in the X-Men series until we hear otherwise.

What do you guys think?

Briefly: The long awaited Deadpool movie is currently shooting in Vancouver, and star T.J. Miller today revealed just who he’ll be playing in the anticipated feature:

Yep, as many expected, he’ll be playing Weasel, “a friend, sidekick, information broker and arms dealer for Deadpool. Weasel is perhaps Deadpool’s best friend. However, because of his frequent mood swings and tenuous mental state, Deadpool still often abuses or mistreats him, although Weasel has also displayed an opportunistic streak against his friend on occasions.”

The still mysterious film also stars Ryan Reynolds and Gina Carano, and is set to hit theatres on February 12th, 2016.

Are you looking forward to the film? Sound out below!

Briefly: It was just yesterday that Ryan Reynolds reminded us that Deadpool is now just one year away, and today the film added a female lead.

Haywire and Fast and Furious 6 actress Gina Carano has joined the project as Angel Dust. In the source material, the character is a member of the Morlocks, but its unknown what sort of role she’ll play in the film.

Apparently, as noted by THRX-Men’s Colossus will also appear in the film.

Did you catch that prototype mask yesterday? Do you think Carano is a good fit for Angel Dust? Will you be lining up for this next February? Sound out below!

Briefly: It was just a few weeks back when we learned that Deadpool would begin Filming in Vancouver this March, and today star Ryan Reynolds reminded us that the film is just one year away from today.. and he also gave us an early look at the prototype mask. Take a look below:

Now, no further casting has been revealed, and we certainly don’t know what the movie’s about, but we’re pretty danged excited. Bask in the glory of the test reel (again) below, and be sure to let us know if you’re excited! Deadpool hits theatres on February 12, 2016!

Bryan Singer announced who will be playing Storm, Cyclops, and Jean Grey via Twitter today in his upcoming prequel/sequel: X-Men: Apocalypse.

Bsinger Quote

The three will be playing fan favorites Cyclops, Storm and Jean Grey (portrayed in the original trilogy and last year’s Days of Future Past by James Marsden, Halle Barry and Famke Janssen), with Alexandra Shipp (Straight Outta Compton) playing Storm, Sheridan (Mud) as Cyclops and Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones) as Jean Grey.

Xmen Cast
(l-r) Alexandra Shipp, Tye Sheridan, and Sophie Turner join the cast of X-Men: Apocalypse as Storm, Cyclops and Jean Grey, respectively.

Set in the 80’s–a full two decades before first X-Men movie–Apocalypse also stars Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and James McAvoy reprising their roles from Days of Future Past.

The movie starts shooting this April and is set to release in May 2016.

What do you guys think? Perfect casting? Don’t know what Singer was thinking? Let us know in the comments!

Briefly: S0 it turns out that the leaked Deadpool test reel was the best thing that could have possibly happened to the project.

Ryan Reynolds confirmed that it was finally Chimichanga Time back in December, and according to Global News, it sounds as though the project is on a bit of a fast track, as they state that Deadpool will begin filming in Ryan’s hometown of Vancouver this March. Yep, just a couple of months from now. They better get moving, as the Tim Miller directed picture is slated for February 2016.

No other casting has been revealed, and we certainly don’t know what the movie’s about, but we’re pretty danged excited. Bask in the glory of the test reel (again) below, and be sure to let us know if you’re excited!

Never mind that he already was, but we all try to forget about X-Men Origins so it’s okay. Ryan Reynolds tweeted from his verified account (that I didn’t know he even had) this teaser:

We all know how good of a job Ryan Reynolds will do, if that proof-of-concept trailer showed us anything. I would love a Deadpool movie more than anyone, but at this point I’m just relieved it will happen while we can still care about it. I was on the verge of giving up all hope.

The film will be directed by Tim Miller and be released February 12, 2016.

Rob took the reigns right off the bat and raced off at breakneck speed! He tells the crowd about breaking into comics, his career and whether or not he considers himself a controversial figure. Excited for New York Comic-Con? It’s just over a week away! Hope to see you there!

I spent a quiet Thursday at Philadelphia’s Comic Con in Artist Alley. After talking to a group of very kind, friendly artists, I decided to walk around and ask them where they find their creativity and also about their creative process. I talked to people like Brahm Revel, who discussed his new project Guerrillas, Agnes Garbowska, artist for My Little Pony, and Arthur Suydam of Marvel Zombies and Walking Dead fame. I even got to talk to Mark Pingatore, an artist for Garbage Pail Kids. Here are some highlights from the chats:

Brahm Revel: Guerillas, Marvel Knight’s X-Men

“Inspiration just comes from everywhere; it’s how you see the world and see juxtapositions and match up what you like. I just try to stay open to what my mind’s doing or thinking. I try to take lots of notes. When I think something’s cool I jot down in my little notebook so I don’t forget it. I just try to be aware all the time of what I’m thinking about when I see something that I like that I think would be a good idea I jot it down so I have it for the next project.

As for my creative process, things just happen. Guerillas is about a platoon of chimps in Vietnam and about the one human that’s with them. It’s like Tarzan meets Platoon. It’s a human who kind of learns to become a man through fighting in a war with apes. The way I got that idea was I was watching a war movie and the way the platoon of humans were walking through a bombed out landscape reminded me of the way chimps walk in a line together when patrolling their turf, and it linked up and I had an idea for a comic.”

Agnes Garbowska: My Little Pony

“I’ve always loved drawing. I’m an immigrant from Poland and live in Canada now, and when I first came to the country I didn’t speak any English and I couldn’t go to school because I didn’t have my paperwork yet, so I watched a lot of cartoons. They were what inspired me to get into art because I was so hypnotized by all these characters on the screen that I started drawing them…and drawing them and drawing them every single day. And what turned into a hobby and passion of mine as a kid made me realize this was what I wanted to do as an adult so I started looking at traditional artists, comic artists, storyboard artists, an artist I could get my hands on. Everything around me inspired me and I started growing as an artist I went back to school started started practicing different techniques and now I draw ponies!

The shows I loved were Care Bears, the original My Little Pony, Captain Planet, Carmen Sandiego, so many cartoons inspired me. Then later on it was Powerpuff Girls, Fairly Oddparents.

I actually have an interesting creative process. When I start I do all my layouts digitally…once I have all my pencils completed, I print them out and light box and ink them traditionally. After they’re inked I watercolor them traditionally by only watercolor that tones. So basically I watercolor the shadows of the image. So that way I can scan it back into the computer, and then in Photoshop I can add the final digital colors. That way, I have the bright copy digital colors that still have that watercolor feel because underneath they have the watercolors, so the texture of the watercolors comes out, and that’s really the style I’m known for.”

Jeff Hewitt: The Ends

“The storyline [for The Ends] started as a role playing game about 25 years ago. My best friends and I did this game, and over the years we created a lot of source material, so I took all that and shaped it into a story that I wanted to tell.

I do photo manipulation, so the first thing I do is photography. I work out of a bank of five, six thousand photos, I cast people in parts, and then I sit down and pull from those [photos] and I write the book page by page and panel by panel.”

542365_204093759715388_1943933705_n_1024x1024

Chris Ehnot: Fallen

“When I get a project, such as a cover, there’s generally a theme that we have to work around, and creatively I’ll come up with a process that’s more concept art to come around that theme, after that I move onto the pencil stage. Once approved, I move onto the final piece and inking form.

When I’m doing my own project I usually go back and forth to get the final project done. When it’s personal it’s easier to work with, because once you come up with an idea, it’s easier to go to pencil and paper rather than just trying to solve what your client is trying to interpret from their own description.”

Fallen

Mark Pingitore: Garbage Pail Kids

“I collected the Garbage Pail Kids cards when I was younger, so I usually try to think back to the original spirit of the cards and try to capture that, but I also think of pop culture, sports and everyday life as an influence. I basically capture anything people can relate to.

I start out by roughing out quick sketches to get an idea down. I don’t get too detailed at first until I know that it’s going to go somewhere. Usually it’s rough at first.”

goonies_gpkcustoms

Arthur Suydam: Marvel Zombies, Walking Dead, Deadpool

“There are two guys who have all of the zombie stuff going on. Myself and Robert Kirkman got the whole zombies thing kicked off again.

There are essentially two of us [in the zombie business] who are classically trained, and I’m one of them. My training comes from The New York Academy of Figurative Art that was created based on note from Michelangelo, Raphael and Leonardo da Vinci and based on their notes from that period they rebuilt that same school in New York. I went there and the curriculum was 99% anatomy. You have to do a lot of autopsies on cadavers. I had to sculpt them, paint them and draw them and make casts of them. Put that together with watching horror movies, and I love comic books. Put that all together and this is what you get. Zombies.

I paint with everything traditional. I love wash, I love oils, pen and ink, and I think they should get rid of acrylics altogether, it’s a terrible paint and I don’t like charcoal because it gets all over the place. I get more of it on me than I do on the paper.

My family came over in the 16th century from Holland to open up a trading post, fought the Indian Wars on the Hudson because that’s where the trading post was, and that became New Amsterdam, which eventually became New York. Two of my great uncles, James and Henry, were both Hudson River painters. There’s a collection of about a dozen painters who after the civil war were American artists who got world recognition for the first time. After them there was another, who became known as an American architectural artist, and his work is hanging in the White House, there’s an entire wing devoted to him in a museum in New York and I’m the latest, and I do zombies.”

Dawn Griffin: Abby’s Adventures, Zorphbert & Fred

“My inspiration comes from anything, from animated movies, cartoons, TV shows, sitcoms, I’m quirky and funny, it’s kind of my schtick, so I think anything to have to do with cute and funny quick-type humor fits right in.

I used to work with a fountain pen, and I would scan it in and color it that way. But since I purchased a Gateway convertible laptop, it’s actually 100% digital at this point.”

ZF_Volumes1

Kurt Lehner: artist, Marvel, DC Comics, Designer of Disney’s Gargoyles, creator of Franklin the Turtle

“My inspiration comes mostly from my childhood, growing up as a fan. Basically loving everything we love about this business of superheroes and cartoons. My inspiration is the fans. I try to create pieces where the fans say “Oh my gosh I would really love to have that.” Stuff that you don’t see anymore. I’m more of a retro artist. I incorporate a lot of retro flavor into my pieces so that whether you’re a kid, adult or grandparent there’s something for everyone in my work because it has a modern flavor yet it’s old school.”

Coming up later in the week, I’ll be doing an in-depth interview with My Little Pony artist Agnes Garbowska, a story/interview with Tom Cook, who was an animator for pretty much every 80s cartoon you loved, an overview of a panel discussion with Marv Wolfman (writer of Fantastic Four, Blade and more) and will be posting some fun Cosplay photos. Stay Tuned! (Yes, Cook animated the cartoon parts of that film as well.)

Briefly: Since X-Men: Days of Future Past hit theatres on Friday, essentially erasing and re-writing the X-Men film franchise, we’ve all been wondering whether or not Days was a swan song for the original X-Men cast, or if we’d be seeing them again in the next film, X-Men: Apocalypse (which Jon and Ian discuss at length, along with the rest of DoFP in the latest podcast).

In an interview with The Daily Beast, screenwriter and producer Simon Kinberg, he states that Apocalypse “will focus primarily on the First Class cast, but it will certainly have some of the original cast involved, too.”

It’s not much, but it’s something! Who would you like to see in the film? X-Men: Apocalypse hits theatres on May 26th, 2016!

I’d take a look at the full interview too, it’s pretty great.

Briefly: With just one week remaining until the film’s release. Fox has just debuted a new featurette for their highly anticipated X-Men: Days of Future Past.

The video is titled ‘Extinction’ and features the cast chatting about what’ll happen if they don’t succeed in their newest mission. It also features some great looking new footage… which I almost wish that I hadn’t seen as we’ve pretty much seen the whole movie by now.

Take a look at the featurette below, and let us know what you think! X-Men: Days of Future Past hits theatres on May 23rd!

Briefly: An X-Men: Apocalypse rumour has just been confirmed.

During an interview for X-Men: Days of Future Past, producer Lauren Shuler Donner spoke to TotalFilm about the topic of Gambit and who would play him. As TotalFilm mentioned the rumours of Channing Tatum being eyed for the character, Donner confirmed that Tatum would portray the character in the next X-Men film.

She continued, “He’s a rogue, Channing — he’s a rascal, just like Remy LeBeau. And he can handle the action, we all know that. And he’s got a really good heart … I think he’ll be great for Gambit.”

You can take a look at the full video below, and be sure to let us know what you think of the news! Is there anyone else you’d have preferred for the role? Will you miss Taylor Kitsch? Sound out below!

Briefly: With just two more weeks of waiting until X-Men: Days of Future Past hits theatres, Fox is really ramping up the marketing for the film.

Today, the studio released a new ‘Quicksilver Power Piece’ clip, which is a mashup of a ton of impressive new Quicksilver footage. He still looks pretty lame (in my opinion), but definitely fares better in motion than in still photos.

Take a look at the (spoilery) footage below, and let us know if you’re excited for the film. X-Men: Days of Future Past hits theatres on May 23rd!

The ultimate X-Men ensemble fights a war for the survival of the species across two time periods in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. The beloved characters from the original “X-Men” film trilogy join forces with their younger selves from “X-Men: First Class,” in an epic battle that must change the past – to save our future.

Briefly: X-Men: Days of Future Past is just two weeks away from theatres, and Yahoo! has just launched an awesome interview with Hugh Jackman… being interviewed by Hugh Jackman.

Yep, they sent him back to 1999, and the two have a conversation about X-Men, comic book movies, Hugh’s career, which of his films have been the best, and which ones to avoid. It’s pretty hilarious, and definitely worth the watch.

Check out the video below, and let us know what you think! X-Men: Days of Future Past hits theatres on May 22nd!

Briefly: Another day, another clip from this month’s X-Men: Days of Future Past.

This one takes us back in time, and shows us Beast meeting Wolverine for the first time. Hilarity, of course, ensures.

We’re all pretty excited for the film, and if the rest of the feature is anything like this clip, we’ll be in for a treat on May 22nd. Take a look at the clip below, and let us know what you think.
