John Cassaday’s hasn’t regularly worked on a Marvel title since his and Joss Whedon’s run on Astonishing X-Men in 2008 . When they announced that he would be teaming up with writer Rick Remender on Uncanny Avengers, fans of his work were beyond excited. Comic Book Resources recently asked Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso about how he went about bringing the artist back to Marvel as well as giving us a two page sneak peak at the first which clearly features Wolverine and Rogue preparing for the funeral of Charles Xavier.

I met John at his favorite watering hole and leveled with him, said, ‘This series set the tone for the next decade’s worth of Marvel publishing and I’d kill for you to draw it.’ Then I gave him the series outline and a sampling of Rick’s work, most notably Uncanny X-Force, and that was that. A few days later, John texted me and said, he liked it. Shortly after, we closed a deal. The orders for Uncanny Avengers are insane, and it’s a team effort, but John’s role in putting us through the stratosphere can’t be underestimated. He’s a one-of-a-kind artist.

During Grant Morrison’s run on New X-Men quite some time ago, he made a very controversial decision to have Beast undergo a second mutation which gave the character a more feline-like appearance. Well, it seems that the the following excerpt from the script as well as the preview from Bendis & Immonen’s All-New X-Men #1  indicates that we may see the character undergo yet another mutation. Now the question is…to what?

It has been pretty much known for a while that Brian Michael Bendis would be doing a new Guardians Of The Galaxy title as part of the Marvel NOW! relaunch. However,  there was no word on who the artist would be. Until today that is. The following teaser reveals that Brian Michael Bendis will be teaming up with Steve McNiven (Nemesis) for the first time since they brought back Sentry in the pages of New Avengers. A masked Star-Lord was featured on Adi Granov’s cover of Marvel NOW! Point One, but who is this mysterious character in the teaser? Could it be a young Star-Lord?

With Kieron Gillen ending his run on Journey Into Mystery, fans have been wondering just what will happen to Kid Loki. The cover of Marvel NOW! Point One featurs an image of him standing beside Miss America Chavez and Wiccan which led many to speculate that this would be the new cast of Journey Into Mystery (which was later debunked when it was revealed the title would focus on Sif) or that we may be seeing a new Young Avengers series. It starts now! But what is it?Guess we’re going to have to wait until next month to find out!

It seems almost daily that Marvel is announcing titles that people are going to be adding to their pull lists. And a NOVA title from Jeph Loeb (Wolverine) and Ed Mcguinness (Hulk)? We’re in.

Whatever Marvel has up their sleeve for this December’s issue #700 of The Amazing Spider-Man is supposed to be huge. So huge in fact that Marvel are ending the series with that issue. There’s been no word as far as if the series is getting a relaunch as part of Marvel NOW! yet. Dan Slott has previously stated that the events of the issue are so major that he will have to go into hiding once it hits stands. And now the waiting game begins.

Agent Phil Coulson recently made his comic debut in the Battle Scars mini-series alongside Marcus Johnson/Nick Fury Jr. (aka Sam Jackson edition Nick Fury), and now it appears that Agent Coulson will be one of the central characters featured in this October’s Marvel NOW! Point One. Phil will appear in a story from the creative team of Nick Spencer (Ultimate Comics X-Men) and Luke Ross (Captain America), the details of which are currently unknown. We all want more Phil right? Or is it just me?

With Uncanny X-Force coming to an end with issue #35 and the recent announcement of Cable & X-Force it seemed as if the book was done. Well, don’t worry Uncanny X-Force fans because the title is returning with a new creative team and line-up! Sam Humphries (Ultimate Comics Ultimates) and artist Ron Garney (Ghost Rider) will be relaunching one of Marvel’s best titles. I am actually glad to hear this news because I was quite worried about who would taking over on this title if they relaunched it but have complete faith in Humphries writing this. Humphries recently spoke about taking over on the title with ComicsAlliance.

When asked where he would see his run fitting into the people who have worked on X-Force books into the past that seemed to be outside of the core X-titles:

Yeah, absolutely. One of my favorite things about this book, not just working on it but reading it over the years, is that it delivers a story that you can’t find in any other X-Book. Theres’s a combination of characters and character dynamics, and they go out and find and deal with situations and beings and all sorts of dark secrets that you can’t find anywhere else. Through the different incarnations, we’ve seen that implemented in different ways. You have the Rob Liefeld paramilitary extreme version, you have the wacked-out, nearly psychedelic Milligan/Allred version, you’ve got Rick Remender doing his thing with questions of killing and murder and when it’s okay and when it isn’t.

Even though it’s a definition, it gives you a lot of room to move within that definition. There’s a lot of different things that you can pick apart in the Marvel Universe, and specifically the mutant universe, that aren’t ever really addressed in the main book. It’s a huge opportunity to do some cool things, new things, to get people excited and present the whole mutant world in a new light.

When asked about the line-up and if it was going to be the same group in Remender’s run:

No, it’s not. This is not any cast that I think anyone can say they’ve ever seen before. This is not a classic Wolverine, Rogue, Colossus line-up. It’s definitely a new mix of characters thrown together in ways that they really have never encountered each other before.

The group that we start off with right off the bat is Psylocke, Storm, Puck and Spiral, and we have a few more characters joining the group in the first few issues. In my mind, all those characters are wild cards. They’re all strong personalities, they’re all strong in terms of their powers, they’ve all got dark secrets and they’ve all got a rebellious streak. That to me is a really attractive part of the book, being able to balance all those character dynamics at once.

On the topic of the focus of the title being on Psylocke:

She’s been through the machine in more ways than one, you know? In the comics, she’s been through a lot. In real life, she’s been handled by a bunch of different writers, some of whom take her in opposite directions. In both cases, I think it’s fair to say that Psylocke is a survivor. She’s someone who rises above her complicated past and the tragedy and figures out what’s best for Betsy.

I can’t spoil anything, but at the end of Rick’s run, we leave Betsy in one situation, and in the first issue of my run, we pick up six months later, and Betsey is definitely in a life transition point. It’s kind of being in that moment that kicks off the events of that first arc.

Regarding the pressure of doing this after how praised Remender’s work was:

Hell yeah there’s pressure. The other book I write for Marvel is following up Jonathan Hickman on the Ultimates, so it seems to be a pattern at this point that I just have to figure out how to fill pretty big shoes on really excellent titles. This is not a Jack Kirby walking into DC’s office and saying “give me your lowest selling title” situation. It’s intimidating.

X-Force has been one of my favorite books since before Marvel even knew my name. I’ve been loving the sh** out of Rick’s run, and Rick and I have known each other for years. He was very open, very generous with his notes and his thoughts about where to go, and his experiences writing the book. But the thing about Rick’s run, and I can say this because I know what happens, is that Rick nails the end of his run. Kills it. His whole run on Uncanny X-Force is a complete story, it has a beginning, a middle and an end. I love his run enough to respect that and acknowledge it, but I also love it enough to leave it alone.

Nobody wants to see me try and continue X-Force as a watered-down version of Rick Remender. Rick asked questions in the book and addressed them. There’s nothing left for me to continue, but it would not be an enjoyable experience for anyone involved, for the readers, for Rick, for me or for Marvel. No one would come out pleased. This spins directly out of the events of Rick’s run, but it takes the concept of X-Force, the mandate of the book and the characters down a new path with a new focus.

Why he decided he is  going to stay away from plot elements such as Apocalypse and Otherworld:

I wouldn’t say it’s a conscious boycott by any means, but I read Rick’s stuff with Apocalypse and I’m like “Damn, he did it.” Slam dunk. I don’t really have anything to add to that right now, nor, I think, is anyone asking me to add to it right now. “The Dark Angel” saga f***in’ kicks ass, you know?

That’s not to say that if, down the road, I had an idea for a good Apocalypse story, I wouldn’t do it. It’s like the difference between having Bruce Springsteen onstage and a Bruce Springsteen marionette onstage. It makes everything look terrible. So right off the bat, I’m focused on a new status quo for this team, a new line-up. It’s a new #1, a new focus, and we have new things to address. The most important things I take from Rick’s legacy are just writing the hell out of the book.

I’m gonna write it like I stole it, basically.

Rick did not yield or stop at any stop signs in his run. It’s ruthless and compelling and exciting, and those are the things we’re going to take. That’s the kind of mandate you get when you hop on X-Force. They’ve got all the mainstream X-Men stuff handled, you know? You have Bendis and Jason Aaron steering the X-Men ship, they don’t need a knockoff of that or someone doing that with a different set of characters. My job is to deliver stories and surprises and excitement and experiences that you can’t get anywhere else.

Could the cast of Jonathan Hickman’s New Avengers be an incarnation of Marvel’s The Illuminati? At least Skottie Young’s variant for the issue would imply this being that Black Bolt, Iron Man and Mr. Fantastic were all member of the group. And if you’re unfamiliar with the group:

The “Illuminati” was a secret organization comprised of several of the world’s most powerful heroes: Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Strange; Black Bolt, King of the Inhumans; Charles Xavier, founder of the X-Men and mutant rights activist; Reed Richards, founding member of the Fantastic Four; Namor the Sub-Mariner, King of Atlantis; and Iron Man (Anthony Stark), founding member of the Avengers. These six men worked together for an unspecified amount of time to mold and shape the status of the superhuman world and the world around it.

Minus Black Panther each member on this cover was a member of this group. Could they be re-uniting after the events of AvX? I guess only time will tell but this is definitely an interesting line-up to put together for an Avengers title.

Not too long ago two teasers were released for upcoming Marvel NOW! titles. One that read “Survive”, which turned out to be Avengers Arena, and then a second with the word “Wanted” that turned out to be hard to figure out. Well, this December Cable returns the lead the team he began in Cable And X-Force from Dennis Hopeless and Salvador Larocca. But this time around X-Force won’t just be a team behind the scenes but the world’s most wanted mutant terrorists. With a line-up consisting of Cable, Forge, Domino, Colossus and Dr. Nemesis this book definitely promises to be an interesting read.

“You have Cable, Forge, Domino, Colossus and Dr. Nemesis. In my mind this is a crime series, so I tried to cast the book like you would a bank robbery. This isn’t a family or a school. It’s a crew. A safe cracker may hate her getaway man, but at the end of the night, she still needs him to drive the car. Cable puts the team together for their skills, not because he thinks they’ll get along. Our first arc is the story of how Cable and his X-Force become the world’s Most Wanted mutant terrorists. You know how at the beginning and end of every “Mission Impossible” movie Tom Cruise is a spy, but in the middle he’s an international criminal on the run from the whole world? That’s what we’re doing here. How hard is it to save the world when you’re also on the run from the law?”

Remember that Survive teaser that we thought could possibly be an ongoing Marvel Zombies title? Well, it seems that Marvel is going Battle Royale with some of their characters in Avengers Arena. Is this a bad thing? Hell no. It means they’re finally starting to trim the fat and get rid of the useless characters that no one cares about. Well, and maybe a few that people do care about.

Writer Dennis Hopeless and artist Kev Walker are going to bring 16 young Marvel heroes together to “fight or die”. In this upcoming series we will see the psychotic Arcade take members of Avengers Academy, The Runaways and more, including Darkhawk who you can see among the group pictured below, to Murder Island. Be prepared because people are going to die.

Writer Dennis Hopeless on the title:

“We really got to cherry pick our cast. That was a lot of fun, almost as much fun as creating the brand new characters. I have a feeling the Braddock Academy kids in particular are going to break some hearts. Not sure if we made it clear yet, but people die in this book.”

Later this year we will see a new Captain America series from Rick Remender and John Romita Jr. coming our way. CBR has revealed a first look a the cover to issue #2 that shows Steve Rogers sporting a bit of a different look. But also looking at the cover…it leads one to wonder who is this mystery child holding Steve’s hand?

Writer Rick Remender on the upcoming series:

“He’s taking down super villains and saving the world and in the midst of all of this, Steve Rogers the person gets lost in the shuffle. He is so exhausted but driven by this sense of duty that when this situation arises and things move forward, he’s going to have a very big reaction. I’ll deal with the fallout from things like ‘Avengers Vs. X-Men’ and how it affects Cap in ‘Uncanny Avengers’ where you’re also getting the return of the Red Skull. This is going to be a very different thing and won’t really deal with those ramifications so much. He’s got his mind on other stuff in this adventure.”

So, remember when Marvel released that teaser for Daniel Way and Steve Dillon’s Marvel NOW! title a week ago? And I jokingly said “Hey, what if it’s a Thunderbolts book with The Punisher and Deadpool on the team?” Well, I guess it turns out that it IS a Thunderbolts book starring The Punisher, Deadpool, Red Hulk, Venom and Elektra. After seeing this line-up you’re sold, I’m sold and we’re all adding this to our pull lists. Check out Steve Dillon’s cover for issue number one of Thunderbolts! Just shut up and take my money Marvel!

Editor Jordan White speaking to Newsarama about the title:

The idea for this team of Thunderbolts actually came from a Marvel retreat, where ideas are flying fast and furiously. The question of how to shake-up Thunderbolts and take it in a new direction came up, and the idea of a Red Hulk-led team got the room excited. From there, the question became who he would tap for his team, and everyone agreed the main roster you see here (Punisher, Venom, Elektra, and Deadpool) would be an awesome team book. Looking for the right fit for this book as far as writers go, Dan Way was at the top of the list — and once we brought the idea to him, he leapt in with both feet, with tons of ideas of his own to add to the mix. He quickly shaped what was a rough idea for a team into a book with a specific idea and direction behind it… and added in a few more characters to the team, who shall be revealed over the first few issues.

Unlike the most recent Thunderbolts, this group is not working for any government program — this is Red Hulk’s team, to do with as he sees fit. In case you forgot, big red’s secret ID is that of General “Thunderbolt” Ross, a well-respected military official who the world thinks was KIA. Well, just because he can’t be part of the American Armed Forces doesn’t mean he can’t put together an armed force of his own (in fact, as a side note, I’d considered suggesting we call the book “Thunderbolt’s” with a possessive, but decided I would be laughed out of editorial if I mentioned it). And again, if you look at the crew ol’ T-Bolt has put together, you can get a sense of the kind of things he might be looking to do with them. They’re a team of loners, but all highly trained and highly skilled as either mercenaries or soldiers. This is a black ops dream team… or perhaps red ops, as the case may be. They’re all characters with their own very particular morality, who do the things they do because they believe in them. They believe they are doing right, even if the world around them might not. Now that they’re working together, they can set their sights even higher… and the world had better look out, because they won’t take no for an answer.”

Take a first look at the artwork for Jonathan Hickman and Jerome Opeña’s upcoming Marvel NOW! Avengers title. If you read Uncanny X-Force you definitely know that Opeña is going to be bringing us one of the best looking Avengers books in a long time.

The greatest heroes in comics together on one unbeatable team! Now shipping twice a month, the Avengers “go large,” expanding their roster and their sphere of influence to a global and even interplanetary level. When Captain America puts out his call – who will answer? Big threats, big ideas, big idealism – these are the Avengers NOW!

Two new teams have been released teasing some new upcoming Marvel NOW! titles. These ones are definitely harder than the last batch and quite a bit more open to speculation.

This first teaser announces the team of Daniel Way (Deadpool) and Steve Dillon (Punisher MAX) and from the word “lightning” one could assume it may be a new Thunderbolts title. With the crosshairs over the name and these two attached could we see a Thunderbolts book that featured The Punisher and Deadpool?

This one is a little harder to figure out. The team of Dennis Hopeless (X-Men: Season One) and Kev Walker (Thunderbolts) could possibly be working on an ongoing Marvel Zombies series? Or maybe that’s too obvious.

Well, it appears we now know who is on the team of Jonathan Hickman and Jerome Opena’s upcoming Avengers title! So, from what we can see here is we’ve got Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Cannonball, Wolverine, Hulk, Captain Marvel, Falcon, Black Widow, Sunspot, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Hawkeye and well…I have no clue who that last one is. There appears to be a trend of mysterious background characters in these interlocking covers. I definitely had been wondering what they were going to do with the New Mutants squad with their series coming to an end in two issues. Check out the squad!

As part of the Marvel NOW! relaunch, the merc with the mouth will be getting a new issue #1 this November. The book will be brought to us by creative team of writers Brian Posehn and Gerry Duggan as well as artist Tony Moore, who you may know as the original artist of a little book called The Walking Dead. Thanks to the folks over at MTV Geek, we’ve got a first look at some of the interior inked artwork from the upcoming first issue. Yes, those are undead versions of former Presidents Truman and Roosevelt. Yes, you are going to be buying this one.

Avengers Vs. X-Men is nearing the epic-conclusion with issue #11 hitting stands in three weeks and the finale shortly after. We all knew that this story would not be ending happy for everybody. At the end of the storyline one major character WILL die as seen by the cover of AvX: Consequences.

Based on the numerous interviews with the creative teams behind these books you can detect that this incident will have a greater effect on the X-Men than the Avengers. This most likely implies that the character that will die will indeed be a mutant. So, let’s discuss the most likely candidates to go out at the end of AvX.

Scott Summers

This seems to be the one on the top of everyone’s list. Personally, I have to disagree with him though. It’s too obvious and I can’t see Marvel building up the character over the past years just to lead to this. And, even though Marvel is denying it, that Marvel NOW! teaser image features a character that sure does look alot like Mr. Summers.

Emma Frost

Based on the cover to number 11 andseeing her and Cyclops going at it she is definitely on the list. And my personal pick to die. She’s one character I really can’t stand and hope is the one that Marvel takes out. One can only hope right?

Hope Summers

The “mutant messiah” is a definite candidate for being the one that goes out here. This battle began over her and most likely will end with her. I think she will make the ultimate sacrifice and that is how she is going to be the one who will “save the mutant race”. Phoenixes tend to flame out, particularly if there’s some noble world-saving to be done in the process, so it stands to reason that Hope would follow in Jean’s footsteps.

Charles Xavier

The top candidate is definitely Xavier. With the plot synopsis for X-Men: Legacy containing the line “in a post-Avengers vs. X-Men world that may – or may not – be without Xavier himself” it is highly possible that Xavier could sacrifice himself to save the mutant race or possibly even Scott from The Phoenix Force. In New Avengers #29, he stated “I’m prepared to stop Scott, no matter what the cost.” That one doesn’t sound too good for ol’ Charles.

So, these here are just my thoughts but there is quite a bit of evidence indicating that Xavier may die at the end of Avengers Vs. X-Men. So, who do you think is going to die? Sound off in the box below!

This one of a kind variant will have fans flocking to their stores to grab this must have cover! This November, Rick Remender & John Cassaday redefine what it means to be Earth’s Mightiest in Uncanny Avengers #1!

Let’s just say…I want two.

Take a look at John Cassaday’s design sketches for three of the mutants who will be joining the Uncanny Avengers line-up as part of the Marvel NOW relaunch. Also featuring commentary on each one by Marvel’s Senior Vice President of Publishing Tom Brevoort.

In essence, Rick and I wanted to go back to something approximating his original cool Neal Adams design—the black highlight-less bodysuit with the concentric circle power effect. That was always his most distinctive look in my opinion, and nothing he’s worn since that has really been all that memorable. So John took his cues from that design, tweaked it a little bit, pulled that strange antennae-thing he had on his head down onto his cowl, and off we went. I seem to recall that John initially had him with a full belt, and I had to talk him into compromising with the sort of side belt things. I’d say it’s more moving back towards the way Neal Adams originally depicted his powers working visually back in the day, only maybe modernized a little bit. So yeah, no glowy “Tron” lines necessarily, but a while lot of concentric circles.

In terms of Rogue’s look, I think everybody involved really liked her original Michael Golden outfit, the one with the hood—so this represents a modernization of that approach to the character. As you say, it’s really not all that different from the kinds of things she’s been wearing recently. A little bit less scarf, maybe.

The Scarlet Witch has always had one of the least practical costumes for a super hero, so having come out the other side of “AvX” and “Children’s Crusade,” that was something we were looking to address. I didn’t really have anything specific in mind other than, “More practical” and “Keep the tiara…” That Tiara is the most easily identifiable aspect of any Scarlet Witch outfit. It was John who came back with the more covered-up civilian style, which we liked and made sense. Wanda is in a different place right now, she doesn’t feel like a super hero any more and she’s looking for a way to atone for her past actions and to move forward as a person, so this look underlines that change in her outlook.

On whether or not we may see team costumes:

The team may still get team costumes. It was one of the ideas that Rick tossed out initially, and it may still be something we do down the line once they’re established as a team. But with that being the new thing in super hero teams, it does start to become a bit ridiculous… Wolverine stopping off in a phone booth on his way to this meeting or that meeting in order to change his clothes. Doesn’t seem like the sort of thing he’d worry at all about, really.

Thanks to the people over at iFanboy, we have a first look at the new Marvel NOW! relaunch of Captain America from the creative team of  Remender (Uncanny X-Force) and John Romita Jr. (Kick-Ass). Check out the cover below as well as excerpts from an interview with Remender discussing his plans for the series.

Remender talks about moving away from the tone that Brubaker set:

Tonally, it’s very different. It’s a hostile takeover. It’s a complete shift from what Ed was doing and I loved what Ed was doing, but if I were to try and emulate that or to continue that tone, it would be Ed light. It wouldn’t be the same thing. So I’m leaning in to what I like to do, which is high adventure, sci-fi, with spy fantasy, with a heavy focus on the man under the suit. It’s very character-focused conflict stuff. One of the mandates I have to myself is, I don’t want to touch the World War II stuff. I think that that has been done, now, and it’s been done perfectly. To go back and to keep focusing on Cap in World War II at this point, again, would be following too closely to what Ed has already done. What I’m doing is spending a lot of time in the Lower East Side of Manhattan in the 20s and 30s, showing Steve grow up. The first arc is 10 issues, and it’s called “Dimension Z.” I don’t want to give away too much, but a big portion of it is Cap dealing with Arnim Zola in Dimension Z. I’m trying to take Zola and do with him, what we did with Apocalypse over in Uncanny X-Force. Where we take what’s there, re-imagine it, build a new mythology and really expand Zola, and try and build Zola into a very, very big and important character. The other half of it is going to be a lot of flashbacks to a young Steve Rogers growing up in Depression-era Lower East Side, and getting to know his family and his friends, and how this 98-pound weakling became such a tenacious, strong person; focus on the fiber and the integrity of who he is, and really develop that for the first time.

On the introduction of “The Green Skull”:

The Green Skull is somebody that I want to seed here, and he’ll be popping up a little bit later. We get a taste of the tail end and sort of like a classic Indiana Jones style cold open, we get a taste of who the Green Skull is, and Cap dealing with the end of his first encounter with him, which I thought was a fun way of handling that. He’s seeded here. He is someone who believes that humanity is the cause of all problems on earth and he wants to turn humanity into soil for plants. He’s got a chemical agent that can do that. We open with Cap dealing with sort of the classic 007/Indiana Jones cold open where he’s dealing with trying to stop that. It really is a big seed for what’s coming up into year two more than anything. It’s exactly the 007 cold open where we get a nice bit of action and then he’s on to the next complication. We’ll see that kind of bubble up in the C story and then come to light probably next year. When you see who he is and we get into him and define him, it’ll obviously open up a can of worms with Red Skull as well. This is somebody who is P.R. minded as well and he wanted something that he thought could. The green representing obviously plant life, and ecology and stuff, and then the skull representing death. This guy is a contrivance and he’s aware of it. I’m trying to dance around it because pays off a couple few times. Without giving away too much, no — he’s not connected to the Red Skull. Yet.

On Remenders plans for Arnim Zola:

The thing I really love about Zola is he’s the bio fanatic. He’s just the guy who is, he’s twisted and crazy. He’s constantly mashing up creating new takes, creating new forms of life and searching for that perfect life to create this perfect being. Personality wise, this guy is equal parts, he’s like the twisted evil Joffrey in Game of Thrones, and sort of like a cold amoral, like the amoral minions of Hans Landa in Inglorious Basterds. He’s a very interesting character the more I read about him and try and build him up. He’s one of those characters that visually always are very distinctive but he’s been relegated to Red Skull’s henchman, sort of a guy who pops up once in a while. He poses a threat but it’s never the kind of threat where you’re like, “Wow, this is going to be huge.” He’s got an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and he needs to be free to experiment on whomever and however he desires. It’s not like power or revenge he’s out for, his drug is knowledge and he’ll go to any lengths to accomplish this. He’s the archetype of the Nazi concentration camp experimenter taken to the extreme, and that is such evil. That all life to him is this clay that he can do with what he will. When we see what he’s up to and what his plot is, and how it ties into Cap, I’m really hoping in the dimension Z story that we can take Zola and really elevate him to an A level villain, and I’m pretty confident that we will. There’s a lot of fun stuff planned.

On the series structure:

Because it’s two stories, the A and the B story. Because the A story is capped in Dimension Z dealing with Zola and the other half is Cap growing up. To tell “Year One”, but to really tell it, it demanded five issues. It deserves five issues. It’s very exciting and I think we’ve got a really great story to tell here. I think that juxtaposing it against what he’s dealing with in the other half of the story really helps both halves. Instead of telling them in separate chunks, they’re inter-spliced for the first 10 issues so it really is kind of two stories being told concurrently. It won’t necessarily be the same amount of issues, it won’t necessarily fall into 18 issue increments, but the way it’s broken down right now, the mega-arc for here pays off in issue 22 or 23 I think. I do like to know where I’m going and like with the Green Skull, I like to be able to seed stuff. If I know where I’m going I can start hanging rifles and seeding things that then you start seeing kind of growing in the background. So when they finally come to fruition and they explode, it was Chris Claremont used to do that so well when he was on point with X-Men. It really kept you engrossed. Not only in the story you were reading but all the questions you had of the other mysteries. He was getting boiling in the D&C stories.

Another title being relaunched as part of the Marvel NOW! initiative is X-Men Legacy with writer Simon Spurrier (X-Men: Curse of the Mutants – Smoke and Blood) and artist Tan Eng Huat (Punisher) will be the creative team on the series. This series will focus on Xavier’s son Legion rather than Rogue who it has made its central character for years. Check out some excerpts below discussing the direction the book will take.

On the titles new direction:

I’d go so far as to say the title’s historically had a second constant too: a certain focusing of perspective; an earnestness and personality-led truth which comes from experiencing things through the eyes of a single character rather than bouncing between all the members of a team. It’s a more direct narrative POV, essentially. In the past the title has been principally preoccupied with Xavier, then Magneto, then Rogue… Now it’s David’s turn. The whole point of doing things this way is that we get a really unique perspective on the Marvel Universe in general and its mutanty side in particular. I tend to think things take on a richer, more truthful flavour when they’re being processed through a character’s direct filter, and it opens the door (or in David’s case, ha, doors) to a lot of interesting new stories. As for the vibe you identifed – the (literal) legacy of the x-verse – yeah, that’s still hugely important. We’re going to be bumping into a lot of surprising but familiar faces and concepts along the way. Part of my original pitch was to treat one half of David’s tale as if it were a homage to Claremont-era X-Men, then juxtapose and strike sparks off it with the other half. Which I can’t really talk about at all.

Will we see the character teaming up with other X-Men:

Actually, no – sod it – I think I’m probably allowed to say: this isn’t a “team book”. At least, not in the conventional sense — and to start with not at all. Whiiiiiich isn’t to say we won’t have appearances by big, recognisable characters in every episode, because we will. David’s story is very much a part of the X-Universe’s own developing yarn – it’s simply that he’s not going to be wearing a brightly coloured supersuit and having team-up banter. In fact, he’s very aware from the ge tgo that in a certain light the X-Men are kinda obliged to regard him as a villain.

On how Spurrier intends to make a character like Legion a leading character in a title:

I’ve made a few other stylistic choices too, because all too often David’s been treated as a Walking Plot Point rather than a fleshed-out character – it’s vital to reverse that trend. People tend to forget he grew up on Muir Island, so I’m instilling him with a faintly British – even slightly Scottish – accent. It lends itself well to sarcastic sniping, and I’m finding that as I get to know David he’s kinda characterised by a rich vein of black gallows humour. He’s seen so much tragedy and trauma, but he’s witty and sharp and able to force a sad smile in any situation. One snarky sod, basically – although underneath it all he’s the same frightened kid, scared of himself, as ever. Above all he’s a good guy. He wants to help – to matter – to make the world a better place. It’s just that he’s completely conflicted, not to mention constantly facing violent opposition, whenever he tries to figure out how to go about it.

Well, apparently this wasn’t supposed to be announced until 9am tomorrow but USA Today couldn’t hold in their excitement.

Illustrated by Mike Allred (Madman) in his trademark pop-art style, FF will get a new look and a new replacement Fantastic Four squad, with Ant-Man heading up Reed’s Future Foundation and teaming with She-Hulk, the Inhumans’ Medusa and Miss Thing, an all-new female character clad in a Thing suit of armor

So, which Ant-Man is that? Well it’s the recently back from the dead (see: Childrens Crusade) Scott Lang! It appears we were right when we guessed both Ant-Man and FF a few days ago? Apparently this team was chosen by the Fantastic Four themselves. This definitely looks to be one of the most interesting of the Marvel NOW! titles. Why do I say that?Well, here’s a little of what you should be expecting from this and Fantastic Four which will be linked with one another.

They’ll be gone for a year — which will only be four minutes in regular Earth time — and while there will be continuing plot threads, each issue will be a new adventure and new situation.

“This is the place to be wildly inventive, and I would like to put as many things down on the page as humanly possible and offer up another dose next issue.”

The Big Bang happened in less than a second, though, so four minutes is an eternity for the big brain of Reed Richards. He makes it a point for them to choose the people they want to carry on their legacy just in case something goes awry since the Earth will still need protection.

Ant-Man and his group stand guard for the four minutes, but nothing happens. Three weeks later, a one-eyed, one-legged, long-haired, half-insane, bearded Johnny Storm walks through the time gateway, shuts it behind him and says, “We can never open this door again.”

This November as part of the Marvel NOW! initiative we will see Deadpool getting relaunched by the new creative team of Brian Posehn, Gerry Duggan and Tony Moore. Get a first look at the cover to issue number one! As well as some excerpts of an interview the team did with IGN!

Brian Posehn discussing how he and Gerry Duggan landed the job:

Well, this whole thing would never have happened if it weren’t for Comic-Con, probably. In any situation where you get something going, it’s all about who you know, and this really came from that. Hanging out with Axel [Alonso]. Meeting Axel through Rick Remender. And Remender, who’s our biggest cheerleader, going, “These guys are funny. These guys love comics. These guys should be writing.” It originally started with the idea that we were just going to do a special. But with Marvel kind of reevaluating their books, they realized they don’t really want to do specials anymore. Then we were on the back-burner for a while. But we’ve been talking about doing something with them for a couple of years now.

Gerry Duggan on the new look:

Now might be a good time to point out that when this runs, you’ll see some art that shows the tweaks he did to the costume. It’s really costume. And they’re subtle. You’ll look at it and know that it’s Deadpool, but it’s a new Deadpool that really looks great. Less pouches and less weird, tech-y gear, but more versatile sort of, “Hey, you know what? Those are magazines. Those are clips.” You get the sense that he can reach behind his back and pull out either a frying pan or a shotgun. It looks great.

Gerry Duggan on Deadpool’s mental instability in the series:

I would say, though, if you’re a fan of a mentally diminished Deadpool, your hopes will be met and your expectations rewarded. I think we wanted with the first issue to make a new Deadpool comic that a Deadpool fan will really enjoy and want to come back for the second issue. The other side there, though, is that we know this is a new #1 by guys that haven’t done Deadpool yet, and we’re hoping to pick up new fans who will buy the first issue and say, “Oh, this is what Deadpool is? I’m sticking around.” I think that’s a balancing act that we did a pretty good job of. I think we made a fun comic that any Deadpool fan will recognize as a new chapter in Deadpool’s publishing history.

Brian Posehn discussing whether we may see Cable or not in this series:

He’s not in the first arc, but hopefully we’ll be on the book for a while. We have several arcs planned. He could definitely come in. We started over with some new S.H.I.E.L.D. people that you’ve never met. That was really fun to create new characters as well as work with Wade – this character that we already love.

Tony Moore on if his art style will change on this book:

Not incredibly so. The basics are all still the same. I do feel a lot more relaxed with this book since it’s not quite so morose as some of the other stuff, especially the work I did on Venom. That got pretty dark. This is a little more freewheeling, and I feel like my cartooning has loosened up a bit. It’s made for some fresher art. I’m really happy with the way things have gone. It’s a more relaxing kind of cartooning than I’ve been able to enjoy in a long time, so I’m pleased with the way everything has gone.

A few days ago we announced that Brian Posehn would be one of the two writers taking over on a new Deadpool series as part of the Marvel NOW! initiative. While many fans were pleased with this news, mostly due to many not being too fond of Daniel Way’s treatment of Wade Wilson over the past few years, some were also worried that because Posehn was a well known comedian that the book would focus too much on the comedy which has been a complaint with the title over recent years.

A few days ago a fan asked Posehn on Twitter:

“I know you’re a comedian but will there be a serious tone to Deadpool as well?”

To which Posehn replied:

“The main goal: write a kickass Deadpool book. Story and action first with funny dialog and situations. Writing a book I’d read.”

Well, being than I am a major Deadpool fan this definitely eases my worries and has allowed me to breath a sigh of relief.

So, we have gotten our first details and looks at Thor: God Of Thunder and Iron Man and now we have a first look at Mark Waid and Leinel Yu’s Indestructible Hulk! I am kind of torn on this one myself because I don’t actually read any of the Hulk titles but Waid is a great writer and Yu’s art is fantastic. This may be the one Marvel NOW! relaunch of a title that I am not already reading…that I may have to check out.

Mark Waid on taking over the Hulk:

It feels amazing. Honestly, it’s a lot like my experience with “Fantastic Four” — I never thought I’d want to write this book until it was offered and I began thinking about it. So many great writers, so many landmark moments — it was intimidating, still is. But the more I began to think about the relationship between Bruce and Hulk, the more I began fantasizing about what it would be like to take the core concept a little more “back to center” like we did with Daredevil, the more intrigued I became. In 1962, Hulk was one of the most unique characters ever in comics because he viewed his powers as a curse, not a blessing. But that point of view is no longer unique — heck, that’s practically the emotional keynote of half the superhero books currently running. So Marvel gave their blessing to morph that attitude into something a little more heroic. Jason wraps things up, elegantly and brilliantly. (I’m forever jealous of the ideas he based his whole run around.) “Indestructible Hulk” #1 picks up a few weeks after the events of “Avengers vs. X-Men.” No one’s seen Banner or the Hulk for a while, and that makes the whole world very nervous.

Lenil Yu on his approach to the title:

In all honestly, I drew both the Ultimate Hulk and Ultimate Wolverine the exact same way I would’ve drawn my regular universe versions. The only change would be the pot belly as specified by Damon Lindelof in the script, a result of his change of lifestyle gorging himself with food in the company of pretty women. Remember Banner’s line from the “Avengers” movie? His secret is that he’s “always angry.” Well, I was always drawing the regular Wolverine and Hulk in the Ultimate Universe. I was very relieved that I didn’t have to draw the young Wolverine with a goatee. The only thing I have to watch for is his height and size. I realize he’s only supposed to be at most 8 feet tall.

Mark Waid talking about the significance of the word indestructible in the title:

There’s a very good reason we chose the word “Indestructible,” it’s actually a subtle story point. Without giving too much away, let’s just say that it ties in with Banner’s whole new attitude. Again, take the concept back to center. Hulk is about what happens to us when we lose control — or when we try to exercise too much control. The stories we’ll be telling treat the Hulk less like a time bomb and more like a targeted WMD — and he’ll be moving throughout the Marvel Universe, exploring (on Banner’s behalf, for reasons you’ll see in issue #1) certain corners of the universe — Jotunheim, The Negative Zone, Lemuria. Hulk and Banner have a mission — and it will take them far and wide.

Lenil Yu talks about the armor we saw in the Marvel NOW! promo:

They asked me to hand in designs for the armor, which I thought was refreshing and could open up new story lines and possibilities. An armor to me implies an inherent vulnerability and that in itself is interesting, especially with the title “Indestructible” Hulk. I’m also a huge fan of Sci-Fi and video games so this is definitely right up my alley. I just love drawing technology.
