One of the popular cosplays at Anime Expo this year was Ryuko Matoi of Kill la Kill. There was a special panel/screening at the convention as well. Many of my friends have been fans of the show for quite some time and I finally decided to check it out. Let me just say, it is not my cup of tea.

Kill la Kill is about a girl, Ryuko, who shows up at Honnouji Academy looking for her father’s murderer. The only clue she has is a giant half scissor. This school and town are insane. Satsuki Kiryuin (otherwise known as Lady Satsuki) is the student council president who runs the school and town with absolute control. Students live in neighborhoods based on their academic status. Then there is extreme violence that is not only tolerated, but is expected. Is Ryuko’s father’s murderer at the school? What is Lady Satsuki hiding?

 kill7

Another strange part of this show are the outfits. Early on, Ryuko learns some of the students have uniforms that are like super suits. She tries to fight a student who has on one such uniform and is pummeled. After retreating, she comes across a mysterious and violently animated sailor uniform which also happens to be a super suit. Where did it come from? How does it work? Why does it have to be so naked?! The show does a good job of being self aware by having Ryuko question the size/look of the outfit. She is obviously uncomfortable about the lack of coverage. Remember I said this was a popular cosplay? Yep. There were many ladies and even some guys wearing Ryuko’s outfit (or even some Lady Satsuki’s outfit). The show is packed with fan service. Even the opening sequence has boobs flopping around for no real reason. Other characters are aware of the indecent exposure and the writing is pretty funny with everyone’s commentary.

kill5

My main complaint with the show is the style of animation. I personally think it is ugly with its sketchy lines and jerky movement. Though the stills seem to look surprisingly good. The show is produced by Trigger (this is their first original TV program) and I thoroughly enjoyed their previous project, Little Witch Academia (short film). I am biased because I tend to prefer the more pretty Shoujo style art. The more saturated colors and cleaner lines are more pleasing to watch.

 kill6

The show is written and directed by the same team that did Gurren Laggan, which is an excellent series. Though the art is somewhat similar, I feel Kill la Kill is just not as engaging as Gurren Laggan. After 4 episodes of Kill la Kill, I am far from hooked but I might continue to see what all the fuss is about. There are many hints at deeper storylines within the first few episodes but not enough concrete substance for me to care about the characters, who seem very one dimensional at this point.

I cannot deny it is a popular show and the people who like it do LOVE it, but so far I am not won over yet. If the animation does not bother you and you like fighting shows, then you might want to check out Kill la Kill.

Back in 2012, the 20th anniversary of Sailor Moon was marked with some of the best news possible; the classic series was getting a reboot series! Promising to stick closer to the Manga, the new take on the series was planned for a mid 2013 release. So we waited… And waited… News was scarce and the show never came, plagued with numerous delays. Fast forward to a year after the originally scheduled release, and the highly anticipated Sailor Moon Crystal is finally here! But after building up so much anticipation on top of trying to live up to the legendary go-go boots of a series that got so many people into anime in the first place, it would be impossible to live up to these expectations. Yet, not only does the first episode do just that, but it does so many things better.

Sailor Moon Crystal Episode 1 Image 2Seeing Crystal in motion is a thing of beauty.

Starting off with a dream of a beautiful princess running towards an armored prince, the stage is quickly set in a very familiar way. We’re introduced to Usagi Tsukino, a clumsy, lazy, crybaby of a middle schooler who would much rather play video games and sleep the day away than do anything remotely important like saving the world. In her mad dash towards school, she accidentally steps on a stray cat with a crescent moon symbol on its forehead. This sets events into motion that will lead Usagi towards becoming the pretty guardian of love and justice, Sailor Moon, but how will such a clutzy whiner stand a chance against the evil forces of the Dark Kingdom?

Right off the bat, the show aims straight for our nostalgia for the old show, complete with sequences, scenes and even voice acting that look and sound almost identical to the show we were used to, only with a new animated style. Speaking of the new animation, it’s proven to be a point of contention leading up to the debut of Crystal, but watching it in motion should put these concerns at ease. Nearly every aspect of the episode felt more fluid, with beautiful, bright animation that stands out in so many ways, although the lanky characters still might be jarring for some. After multiple viewings, the only real complaint I have towards the style of the show is that Usagi has the same facial expression for most of the episode, a far cry from the goofy variations of the Serena many of us grew up with. Emotion and slapstick are better conveyed with over the top expressions, so let’s hope this develops more as the series progresses.

Sailor Moon Crystal Episode 1 Image 1No selling cat claws to the eyeballs like a boss

But as a long time fan who’s watched the 90’s series ad nauseam, I really appreciate the more fleshed out story that Crystal presents. While there were plenty of familiar aspects sprinkled throughout this show, this version just made so much more sense story wise. Small things like the foreshadowing of Usagai’s dreams, the fact that the overaged love interest, Mamoru Chiba, (you know, Tuxedo Mask?), has an actual reason to be outside of the jewelery store where Sailor Moon’s first fight takes place aside from waiting for someone to be saved and Jaedite of the Dark Kingdom having a motive other than “collect ALL the energy!”, makes the future pieces that I know are coming fit so much easier. If I were to introduce this show to a brand new viewer, these changes would make the decision so much easier to start them on Crystal. For older fans, it looks like we’ll have quite a few new surprises to keep us on our toes while still staying faithful to the story we fell in love with. What more do you want from a reboot?

Sailor Moon Crystal Episode 1 Image 3She’s too young for you, bro

So now that Sailor Moon Crystal‘s debut has come and gone, I’m more excited for the future of the series than I’ve ever been. The first episode fired on all cylinders to deliver a fantastic reintroduction of one of the most iconic anime characters of all time, one that has plenty to offer to new and return viewers alike. Some aspects of the series like the expressiveness of the characters and the transformation sequence, (which could do without the 3D/2D hybrid animation and should be a few seconds shorter), might take some time to get used to, but let’s be honest. Did we like everything about the original, or did we just grow to accept some of it? I say give it a few episodes to see if it grows on us, or if it feels like a legitimate downgrade. Still, the worst part about Crystal so far is that we’ll have to wait TWO WEEKS for a new episode. Oh, the torture!

Random thoughts:

–  Just TRY to say the new theme song sucks. It’s impossible. I’ve been listening to it nonstop since the premiere!

– Why is Sailor Mercury crying in the opening? Is she upset that she’s still throwing bubbles at monsters?

– I can’t be the only one that finds it ironic that the lyrics state they don’t need a man’s protection, yet Tuxedo Mask rescues them in almost every episode in the original’s first season. Heh.

– Was anyone else surprised when they saw Usagi’s mom’s hair?

– This bothered me in the original series too. So Sailor V is in the newspapers, is the talk of the school and has her own video game, but Usagi’s seriously never heard of her?

– Why does Mamoru wear the exact same outfit in public compared to when he’s Tuxedo Mask? Worst disguise ever.

– But then again, it’s probably not hard to confuse Usagi.

– RIP bun radar and supersonic cry attack. Episode 1-Episode 1.

Final Score: 4.5 / 5

Okay, so that’s a little overdramatic.

If you watched Sailor Moon Crystal on Hulu or Crunchyroll, you might have noticed something a little strange after you wiped your joyful tears. There was nothing after the credits! No episode preview like most anime, or even a Sailor Says!

As it turns out, there was an episode preview, it just wasn’t aired through all of the streaming channels for whatever reason. Thanks to the good folks on the Internet however, now everyone can find out what to expect in a week and a half on YouTube. And for Sailor Mercury fans, it’s looking like a must watch episode.

By introducing Ami in just the second episode, it seems like Crystal is cutting the fat and only focusing on the important events of the story, which is to be expected when cutting down a 50 + episode season to 26. I for one am relieved, since even the most dedicated fan will get tired of the monster of the week formula that plagues 200 + episode anime. Plus, we’ll get to Sailor Mars’ intro that much quicker, at which point we can all stop watching since the show will already have peaked once Rei graces our screens.

Will you be watching Sailor Mercury’s grand entrance on July 12th?

Since it was announced a few months back that Viz would be re-dubbing and re-releasing the entire Sailor Moon series after winning a years long bidding war for the licensing rights, Moonies have been patiently waiting for more details on when the episodes would start rolling out. Based on Viz’s Anime Expo announcement, it looks like Christmas will be a very happy time for lovers of all things magical girl.

Releasing on November 11th, the first box set will be episodes 1-23 of the first season as a double pack, spanning three DVDs and three Blu-Rays in a two sided case. In addition, each box will include an 88 page color art book, a double sized box to hold the second half when it hits shelves and art work on the back that will line up with all subsequent boxes, making a full image when season five is eventually released. If that wasn’t enough cool stuff to throw in, early preorders at rightstuf.com will come with an exclusive collectors coin while supplies last, (which will also fit in the box for those completionists out there). The price? A low, low 79.98, and I mean that will all the sarcasm I can muster.

It’s great to finally know when we can start throwing money at this thing, especially when you consider that numerous episodes, (including the entirety of the final season, Sailor Stars), have never been dubbed, or even released in the West. On the other hand, if each half season is going to be $80, there are going to be a TON of broke anime watchers in the next year or two.

Will you be picking up any of these releases? Do all the extras make it too hard to pass up, or will you wait until the final box is released? And are you anxious to find out when we’re getting dubbed Sailor Moon Crystal!?

It is hard to believe that it has been 17 years since release of the last Dragon Ball feature film! If you had cable in the early to mid 90s you probably have seen some Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z or at least heard the phrase “Next time on Dragon Ball Z!” Fans can rejoice because this new film, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, is an original work by Dragon Ball creator, Akira Toriyama!

Following the events from the internationally renowned animated television series, Dragon Ball Z, after the defeat of Majin Buu, a new power awakens and threatens humanity. Beerus, an ancient and powerful God of Destruction, searches for Goku after hearing rumors of the Saiyan warrior who defeated Frieza. Realizing the threat Beerus poses to their home planet, the Z-fighters must find a way to stop him before it’s too late.

 DragonBall2

The film is super funny and, as one would expect, it has some awesome action scenes! They did an excellent job of making a film that anyone can enjoy regardless of how much of the TV show/films one has seen. There are inside jokes for those who know the series well but many of those jokes are explained without being bothersome to the veteran viewers. I only watched some of the show as a kid but I never felt lost while watching the film. It was nice to see old characters again and the film did a good job of capturing the feel of the TV show. The animation is sharp with vivid colors while still retaining the look of the original material.

DragonBall4

I was able to speak with Kyle Hebert (best known as the English DBZ narrator) and asked him about his experience working on the new film.

It’s been amazing to get to return to characters I first voiced well over a decade ago, with brand new adventures. Dragon Ball is where my career began so it will always be special to me.

If you are looking for an anime with lots of action and humor or if you have ever seen any Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z, then you will definitely want to check out Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods!

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods hits theaters nationwide on Tuesday, Aug 5, 2014. For more details about the US theatrical release, visit www.dragonballz.com

The World Cup might be exciting, but can your favorite player summon a dragon with the force of his kick?

To celebrate the start of summer alongside all of the World Cup festivities, Nintendo has cut the price of Inazuma Eleven in half, pricing it at a mere ten dollars! Featuring a group of kids as they work towards becoming the greatest high school soccer team in Japan, this sports/RPG hybrid is one that a fan of either genre should definitely look into.

Developed by Level 5, (the talented folks behind such classics as Dark Could, Professor Layton and Ni No Kuni), Inazuma Eleven is the first of a long running franchise that debuted on the Nintendo DS in 2007. Since then, the game has become a monster, spanning sequels and spinoffs across the DS and Wii, multiple movies and two anime series… only they were only released in Japan and Europe. The 3DS release of the first game back in February was the first time us Westerners have had a chance to play it, and if our review is any indication, (which it is), then this is a no brainer purchase, especially at such a low price.

So go ahead and pick up one of those Target exclusive 3DS AR points cards for ten bucks and throw those points at Inazuma Eleven. The sale is valid until July 16 (when it’ll jump back to $19.99), so you won’t have long to take advantage of this awesome deal!

Sailor Moon fans have a lot to be excited about considering that we’re about a month away from the broadcast debut of Sailor Moon Crystal, the reboot of the classic anime series. Hoping to make that wait a little easier, (or harder if you’re going crazy with anticipation like I am), the first trailer for the upcoming show has hit the Internet. And man, is it glorious!

Hearing Usagi’s voice set to new footage for the first time in years was more incredible than I ever thought it would be, so kudos to the casting directors for bringing back the same seiryu that voiced her all those years ago. As suspected from the teaser images, the animation draws much more from the sharper, thinner characters of the manga compared to the round, cutesy style of the original anime. And while Sailor Moon was the only one we saw in action, the inner senshi look absolutely incredible… Except for Venus. I’m afraid of those beads… Now we wait on Tuxedo Mask!

Watch the trailer below, and I DARE you not to cheer when you hear “Tsuki ni kawatte oshioki yo!” at the end. So much nostalgia. Too many feels…

This weekend was a great time to be an anime fan.

After a bidding war that has spanned the years since ADV left the anime distribution business, companies have been fighting for the right to bring the classic anime, Sailor Moon, to our shores once again. Right off the heels of the first details of the highly anticipated reboot, Sailor Moon Crystal, Viz has finally come out on top, reaching a deal that will not only bring us the new series both dubbed and subtitled, but will also revive the original series in its entirety, including the three movies and the never before released Sailor Stars series finale!

If that wasn’t exciting enough, starting Monday, May 19th, episodes of the original series will begin airing on Hulu in their subtitled form, starting with the first four episodes. Two new episodes released weekly, with half season DVD/Blu Ray sets scheduled for the fall, with brand new dubs following in the coming months completely unedited, (although it’s unclear of the dubs will be part of the box set). If you always wanted to watch the version of the series where the Sailor Scouts, (Senshi?) don’t mysteriously leave the final battle of season one for no reason, where Sailor Uranus and Neptune aren’t actually cousins or where the villainous Zoicite is still a dude, you might want to sign up for a subscription.

Plus, whoever thought we would see Star Gentle Uterus in English? Yes, that’s a thing.

For nostalgia freaks and Otaku alike, this is an exciting time to carry the Sailor Moon banner. What do you expect from the coming months? And will you say goodbye to any resemblance of a social life you had to watch the series in its entirety? Continue the conversation below!

It seems like Atlus is making these Persona teases a regular thing, although every announcement can’t be as awesome as a Persona 5 announcement.

The publisher has announced an anime version of its hit Vita game, Persona 4 Golden, the enhanced port of the PS2 classic. Retelling the story of a high schooler who arrives in a small town, only to be caught up in a supernatural murder mystery, the anime will include the additional scenes featuring Marie, a new character who was added specifically for the Vita version.

The confusing part in all of this though, is that there’s already a Persona 4 anime. Golden‘s story is exactly the same aside from Marie and a few other minor scenes, (many of which are optional), so I wonder how this is supposed to play out. Is this an anime of an anime? Will it run redone episodes, or will they just blend the new content into the old episodes? Or maybe this won’t be a series at all, and will only be a movie or OVA.

Either way, as much of a fan as I am, I see this as completely unnecessary. With that said, we shouldn’t be surprised. With another fighting game, a dance game and a chibi-fied spinoff, the fourth game is everywhere these days.

Check out the trailer and tell me how wrong I am. Persona 4 The Golden Animation will release in Japan in July with a Western release yet to be announced.

It’s been a long time coming. Courtesy of NIS America, the classic Clamp anime, Cardcaptor Sakura, is getting a complete collection release. After over a decade since its network TV debut here in the states, this will be a collection that no anime viewer who remembers waking up in the morning with Kids WB on the screen will want to miss.

Featuring all 70 episodes in both Japanese and English, this set will come in both a standard and premium versions. The premium box is full of all the extras you would expect from an NIS release, which includes a 9 metallic gloss blu-ray disc set, a fully illustrated 76 page hardcover art book featuring new illustrations, and a collectable slipcase to hold all that awesome stuff together. The collection will be available at select online retailers, including Right Stuf, The Anime Corner Store, Anime Pavilion, and NIS America Online Store.

About the show:

Ten-year-old Sakura lives a pretty normal life with her older brother, Toya, and widowed father, Fujitaka. At least she did, until the day she returned home from school to discover a glowing book in her father’s study. After opening the book and releasing the cards within, Sakura is tasked with collecting each of these magical cards, while trying to live the life of a normal fourth grader. In the monumental task of collecting all the cards, Sakura must rely on her friends and family, and decide what she finds most important in life.

I’ve always loved Cardcaptor Sakura, but I never got a chance to watch the whole series. With all of it collected into one box, complete with all these extras, it looks like I finally have my shot. Let us know if you’re planning on picking this up on August 5th when the complete series is released.

For anime fans, the last few years have been a long, sad wait for the new Sailor Moon series that was promised. After a good year consisting of silence, small teasers and many tears of impatient fans, details on the new series have FINALLY surfaced. Let me just say that after seeing what’s been developed, it was worth the wait.

Officially titled Sailor Moon Crystal, the series will follow more closely with the manga in both story and artstyle. Bringing together the original five Sailor Senshi, (Moon, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter and Venus), fans both new and old will get a chance to enjoy these classic characters that served as many a fan’s first foray into this crazy world of anime.

The best news? The series debut is right around the corner, scheduled to debut on July 5th. To make great news even better, the show will be simulcast courtesy of Niconico, meaning we’ll all be able to watch the show unfold as it airs!

The synopsis for the show’s website states:

“Usagi Tsukino is a second-year middle school girl who is a little clumsy and a crybaby, but she is full of energy. One day, she meets Luna, a black cat with a crescent moon on her forehead, and she transforms into Sailor Moon, a sailor-uniformed pretty guardian of love and justice! As a chosen guardian of justice, Usagi seems to have a mission to find the Illusionary Silver Crystal with the other guardians and to protect the princess.

Meanwhile, the queen of the Dark Kingdom, Queen Beryl, also sends minions to the town where Usagi lives to obtain the Illusionary Silver Crystal, which has immense power. This causes strange events to unfold….

Can Sailor Moon really find the Illusionary Silver Crystal with the other Sailor guardians, and protect the princess…!?”

How excited are you for the return of Usagi and friends? Take a gander at the teaser images below and tell us how you’ll pass the time while waiting for July 5th to roll around.

I remember hearing about Another from my anime friends a couple of years ago. I had also seen some of the art and was told it was a weird show. Well, to say anime is weird, is redundant because almost all anime is strange in some way and that’s why we love it! I started Another planning to watch just the first few episodes but I just had to know what happened next and ended up watching all 12 episodes.

another8

The series starts off with Koichi Sakikabara, a ninth grade boy who is soon to be released from the hospital. He had a lung collapse and is now staying in the rural town of Yomiyama with his maternal grandparents and aunt. His mother died shortly after he was born and his father is away on business. Cue the creepiness! While at the hospital, Koichi meets a mysterious young girl who is on her way to the basement to give her “friend” a doll. He is later surprised to see her at his new school (she is even in the same class as him) but no one else seems to notice her. Is she a ghost? What is wrong with class 3-3? Why won’t any of the students tell Koichi what is going on? More importantly, why are students and some of their family members dying in gruesome accidents?

anotherbanner

The show starts off as a ghost story then it turns into more of a thriller. Turn off the lights for this one and enjoy the spooky visuals, the moody music and the heart racing series of events. I really enjoyed the Final Destination movies and I think 1000 Ways to Die is fascinating, and the deaths on this show fall into the same category. They are crazy accidents and, after you have witnessed a couple, any dangerous situation makes you nervous. There is a lot of blood but deaths are over rather quickly, until the final climax of the series.

another5

The muted color palette fits the emotionally drained students. Artistically, everyone is drawn in a cute/youthful way which contrasts nicely with the somber environment. Towards the end of the show, when some of the extreme violence occurs, many characters are drawn in an over-exaggerated way which fits perfectly with how crazy they have become.

 another4

The horror aspect of the show peaked my interest and the mystery made me watch episodes back to back. The show explains many things, but not enough to answer all of your questions. Also, the last bit of the show is an extremely different vibe though it still has that hair raising suspense. The less you know about this show before you watch it the better. It puts you on the same level as Koichi and you learn the information as he does. This is what happened for me and I feel it improved my viewing of this show. If you want to watch something creepy with an intriguing mystery, you will want to check out Another!

It’s been a while since comic book writer Tom Pinchuk has been on Geekscape! Luckily, we correct that oversight in this episode in which Tom drops by to talk to us about his new comic book Max Steel: Haywire, coming soon from Viz Media! Tom also educates us on the differences in some of the various conventions as Con Season starts up and also about the cultural and narrative differences between Manga and traditional US comic books! Also, when is a character’s internal dialogue too much…?

About a year ago, anime fans had plenty to be excited about when we all learned that Sailor Moon would be returning with a new anime adaptation. Since then we’ve waited… and waited… We haven’t heard much of a peep since, aside from being told that it’s still coming.

Well, it seems like our patience is about to pay off! A quick look at the Sailor Moon animation web site greets visitors with a countdown that seems to coincide with the AnimeJapan trade show. While no details are given aside from an image of the moon, it has to be the new show’s formal reveal. It just has to be!

If you couldn’t tell, I’m very excited for this show to debut. Sailor Moon was my favorite anime before I knew what anime was, and little did I know that those early mornings watching magical girls fight monsters would help shape the interests I carry on to this day. Including high school girls. *ahem*

blueexorcist1

I was introduced to Blue Exorcist right before Anime Expo 2013. Aniplex was premiering the movie at the convention and I wanted to make sure I watched some of the show before seeing the movie (you don’t really have to by the way). I ended up blazing through the whole series because it was that good! Now fans can check out the show in English on Adult Swim’s TOONAMI™ starting February 22nd. Specific premiere time on Feb. 22nd will be announced on a later date.

The Blue Exorcist TV Series is based on Kazue Kato’s hit manga published in Jump Square (by SHUEISHA) and it saw a multi-stream simulcast on websites such as Hulu, Crunchyroll (subtitled version), and as well as on Neon Alley (English dub version). In response to its worldwide popularity, the series was also adapted into a film and theatrically released across North America this past August. Produced by the highly-acclaimed studio A-1 Pictures, (Sword Art Online, Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, Oreimo 2) the Blue Exorcist TV Series has gained popularity among its fans for its unique storyline and characters. Aniplex of America has released the Blue Exorcist TV Series on home video earlier this year featuring both the original Japanese and English dub which features many popular voice actors such as Bryce Papenbrook (as Rin Okumura), Johnny Yong Bosch (as Yukio Okumura), and Christine Marie Cabanos (as Shiemi Moriyama).

A little about Blue Exorcist: Assiah: the realm of humans. Gehenna: the realm of demons. The hero, Rin Okumura, “an energetic, yet naïve young man aims to become the ultimate exorcist.” Rin is a bit of a screw up but he means well. His twin brother Yukio is the perfect child and they are both raised by a catholic priest. Well, things start getting strange and Rin learns he is the son of Satan! After a tragedy, he enrolls at True Cross Academy where he learns his brother already has been training for some time. Along the way Rin learns more about himself, meets other young exorcists in training, and has some fun epic battles. The show is a cool/interesting mix of various religions. The characters are relatable and likeable and the show delves into their relationships wonderfully. The action and animation are top notch! Also, there is a lot of humor in the show.

Stay tuned for my review of Deadman Wonderland volume 1!

The popularity of Attack on Titan has now spread to car commercials! The team that will be working on the upcoming (slated for 2015) live-action adaptation of the popular anime/manga series gave us a glimpse at what the titans may look like in this exciting Subaru Forrester commercial. Take a look!

Also, there is a creepy/cool behind-the-scenes video, all in Japanese, that shows how they did the effects. Now, when I first heard they would be making a live-action version of Attack on Titan I was extremely skeptical (still am) but seeing what the titans could look like in this ad puts me a little at ease.

As for the brutality that will be in the film, I hope they do not shy away from how intense the show is. The violence and shock when someone dies is part of the viewing experience. It makes the world of the show real and shows you this is not just some game. For example, I liked how Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters depicted the troll smashing humans (the talented effects team at Spectral Motion who also did Hellboy!). Hopefully the filmmakers for Attack on Titan will go a similar route. Then there is the 3D maneuver gear! Imagine all the work that went into making Spider-Man swing around town, put that on crack and do it for five to ten characters zipping around all at once! We shall see.

Either way, the advertisement is epic just like the show! What do you think of the ad? Do you like how they made the titans come alive?

I noticed Library Wars (manga) at my local library but never picked it up because they were always out of v1 or I was reading something else at the time. The LA Eigafest (Japanese film festival) rolled around in December and I saw that they were going to screen a live action version of Library Wars. I hurried out to read the manga but was only able to finish v1 before the movie screening. The film covers the main storyline from v1-v4, so for v2-v4, I ended up seeing the movie version before reading it. It was a unique experience for me because I was able to partially read it before seeing it and partially see it before reading it. This is probably one of the few times where I loved both mediums equally and each just made me enjoy the other that much more!

 library4

Library Wars is set in the near future where media censorship has been taken to the extreme! The Japanese government passed the Media Betterment Act in 1989 which allowed the censorship of any material deemed “inappropriate” and said material would be confiscated and possibly destroyed. Local governments who opposed this act passed The Library Freedom Act which provided armed units to protect the libraries and continue to offer library collections to citizens.

library11

The story takes place in 2019 with Iku Kasahara, who is the first female to apply to the library Defense Force. She is a spunky, often reckless and a tomboy, but it is her determination that sets her apart. When she was in high school, a library Task Force officer saved a book that was about to be taken from her by a Media Betterment officer. From then on, she idolized that man as her “prince” (though she does not remember what he looks like) and she wants to defend books just like him! Well, it turns out that being part of the library Defense Force is much harder then Iku expected with instructor Dojo working her into the ground (at least from her point of view). Will Iku find her “prince”? Why is Dojo picking on her? What will happen to Iku in training? Will she be able to keep up?

library2

Library1

The manga is a fun and easy read and I am currently on v5 (still loving it!). I thoroughly enjoyed the movie as well! It is an action story with comedy, lots of heart and it encourages standing up for what you believe in. I also enjoyed having a female character that was able to keep up, and at times, surpass the boys. She often needs rescuing but on many other occasions she is able to fend for herself and take out the bad guy.  Iku feels like a real person who is just trying to do her best but can often let her emotions dictate her actions. I feel the love story develops in a believable way with a logically slow progression which just makes you all warm and fuzzy inside when the romantic moments happen. Shojo manga is all about relationships, and not just romantic ones; friendship is equally important.

 library12

library8

Since Library Wars is based in a realistic setting (not fantasy or sci-fi) it translates well to live action. In the manga, the characters are drawn younger and some are better looking but that is partially due to the style of manga (Shojo). At first, I was thrown by what instructor Dojo looked like in the movie but then he grew on me. Iku was perfect casting and I felt she embodied the character and her mannerisms spot on. The stories in the film and the manga are pretty similar but the film cuts out some of the side stories from the manga which is for the better (in terms of having a coherent movie). There are some more action scenes in the movie which are really cool. All the changes that were made for the film make sense. I highly recommend checking the movie out, even if you are not into anime/manga because it is a highly entertaining film. Then, if you like reading manga, you should definitely read this title because it offers all you want in a Shojo manga (romance, humor, excellent characters and good looking artwork) along with a believable and engaging storyline.

library9

Remember you first crush? How old were you? Did you make a promise to your special someone? Well, that is what Raku Ichijo did in Nisekoi (False Love) by Naoshi Komi. He is the heir of a yakuza clan and ten years ago he made a promise to his childhood sweetheart. She gave him a lock pendent, she kept the key, and they promised to get married when they meet again as grownups. Now, Raku is in high school and still believes he will meet her again but he has forgotten her name and what she looks like! Things get complicated when a new girl, Chitoge Kirisaki, transfers to Raku’s school. Immediately the two fight over EVERYTHING! It turns out she is the daughter to a rival gang and in order to keep the peace, Raku’s father and Chitoge’s father implore the two to date. Both kids can think of nothing worse but soon realize that their fake love might really be the only way to stop the gangs from fighting each other.

Volume 1 is full of action, extreme emotions (it is high school after all) and the romance is fun to read. Will Raku fall for the brute Chitoge? Will Onodera (the girl Raku actually has a crush on) turn out to be the locket girl? I am actually kind of torn between the two girls and who I want to end up with Raku which goes to show how well written the love story is. The art style shows off the emotions and action sequences well with expressive facial expressions and lots of lines to show the tension and movement.

At first, I thought the potential love plot line between Raku and Chitoge would be cliché, but Komi has pulled me in. The characters have depth and you really want to know what happens to them. You will have to check out volume 1 to find out what happens! I will be on the look out for volume 2!

Volume 1 is currently available for $9.99.

Nisekoi, Volumes 1-6 are also available for digital download for $6.99 each on VIZManga.com and through the VIZ MANGA App for the Apple iPad®, iPhone® and iPod® touch, Android-powered smart phones, and also for NOOK, KOBO, and KINDLE tablets and devices.

******WARNING***** Adult content discussed below!

Yaoi explores gender roles and sexuality and what better way to delve into that than to have the two main characters be adult film stars. Embracing Love by Youka Nitta (same author/artist from Spiritual Police) focuses on successful adult film actor, Iwaki Kyousuke, and young rising adult star, Katou Yoji. Both men want to expand their careers by working in more mainstream films and they get the opportunity when they are both asked to audition for a new erotic film. However, at the audition they are shocked when asked to have sex with each other to see who will get the lead role. Ambitious Katou rises to the challenge first but Iwaki will not be outdone by this young punk.

embracing2

What starts out as a rivalry begins to transition into a romance when Katou starts having feelings for Iwaki. Will Iwaki embrace this new kind of relationship? What does the future hold for these two stars? Their developing romance is a pleasure to read but Iwaki’s self doubt about it all does drag on a little long. I found it interesting that the story is centered around people who have sex for a job and examines how they approach intimate connections.

The characters in this manga are drawn in an elongated fashion. I thought to call them daddy long legs because in some full body images their legs are impossibly long. Their faces are also extended — a sort of cross between an oval and a heart shaped face. Even though they may have long faces, they have chiseled jaw lines and big expressive eyes. The overall visual tone is rather bright with only minimal shading on the characters and blush lines to give any sort of 3D depth to the space. Their clothes and backdrops have nice textures and, in that way, the characters stand out against their surroundings. There is only minor censorship on the private parts; there is actually pubic hair and everything is drawn out, but in a more basic outline style rather than detailed.

I like that volumes one and two come together in a single book as it leads to a solid story arc and character development in one package. I am curious to see where the relationship between Iwaki and Katou goes. Will they be able to stay together? Will Iwaki be able to let go of his envy towards Katou’s mounting fame? Will other people come between them? Will they get to act in the films they always dreamed of? Hopefully the next few volumes will be just as entertaining.

Hi! My name is Kari Lane, and I’ve been an anime lover since I was a little girl. Those good old days when classics like Sailor MoonDragon Ball/Dragon Ball ZCard Captor SakuraDigimon and Monster Rancher were on the most basic of cable.

Over the years, I have expanded my anime repertoire and have attended numerous anime conventions. I’m currently a host on Neo-Cinema, a web-based anime and Japanese live-action movie review show. Recently, I’ve been watching the first few episodes of various anime series’, and thought it an excellent idea to write reviews based on my “first impressions”. Of course, you’ll have many unanswered questions after viewing just 4, 5, or 6 episodes, but you can get a feel for the show and decide if you want to continue watching! I hope my reviews will help introduce you to some awesome anime, or help you avoid the more mediocre junk that’s out there!

I heard about Accel World at Anime Expo 2013 and was reminded about it with the recent press release announcing season 1 was available for purchase. It looked like a cool show and it did not disappoint. This was a show where I blazed through season 1 in one day (12 episodes). The episode structure flows from one to the next and you just want to know what happens next.

Accel World is set in the near future where everyone has a neuro-link to manage anything and everything in their daily lives; it is networking and Google Glass to an extreme. The main character, Haruyuki “Haru” Arita, is a short fat boy who is constantly bullied and finds his only escape from the harshness of reality in virtual reality games. In the virtual world, he feels he can be the best he can be and not be tormented for being a little different. It is funny though because he chose a cute little pig as his avatar. While in the Sims-like virtual world, Haru is approached by the beautiful and super popular student counsel Vice-President, Kuroyukihime, who asks him to meet her in the real world! They directly link into each other (a thing only couples do!!!) and Kuroyukihime invites him to try Brain Burst and enter an accelerated world.

accel9

The virtual reality environment of Accel World is primarily a fighting game but what makes it addictive is in the real world you can essentially “freeze time”. Time does not stop but rather you are able to process the situation faster and are able to step out of your body to fully understand your surroundings. Kuroyukihime explains that people use this to their advantage for fame, power, money, whatever you can think of. How many times you can “brain burst” is determined by how many points you have and the only way to gain points is to battle in Accel World. Time in Accel World is accelerated such that you could be in the game for a year and only a day will pass in the real world.

The concept and art style are similar to Sword Art Online (another really good show), but the shows are also very different. Accel World has a good amount of humor, some of which arises from Haru’s awkward interactions with girls. Though there is a lot of cool battles/fight scenes, at its heart Accel World is about relationships (friends, family, mentor-protégé, boyfriend-girlfriend, and more). Through the course of the season, the relationships between characters are explored and go through their ups and downs. Also, the show is about getting past your own insecurities and not letting anything hold you back.

accel5

Why did Kuroyukihime recruit Haru? Will Haru be able to stay friends with his childhood companions? Who is the real enemy in Accel World? If want a cool action/sci-fi type of show you should check this one out! I look forward to season 2 to see where our hero and friends go next!
