Ever wonder how wrestling organizations like the WWE hire their female talent? Based on the Divas that have gone through the organization throughout the 2000’s, I’d like to imagine that the process is similar to what was shown in The Boom Boom Girls of Wrestling, an independent satire that delves into the world of women in wrestling.

Spearheaded by Carolin von Petzholdt, (who also plays the lead character of Carla Von Awesome,) was inspired to work on this project after she was injured at the end of a two month stint as a pro wrestling trainee. What can only be described as completely insane, the clips shown at the film’s Comikaze panel are what I’d sometimes imagine the hiring process at the WWE looks like. (“Are those silicone? You’re hired!”) After these “super heroes” are chosen, the film promises to take the ladies to some of the most backwater locations you could imagine in order to perform in front of a crowd of dozens. Just like real life!

The film is in its final stages of production and is aiming for a 2014 release. Check out the trailer below, and after you’re done, you can find more information at the website for the film at www.theboomboomgirls.com/

Heading into Anime Expo 2013, I expected the usual out of the popular con. You know, the anime, the announcements, the Cosplay… But amongst the sea of con flu and body odor, the last thing I expected to see was a legendary wrestler like Ultimo Dragon. Luckily for fans like me, he didn’t show up empty handed.

A collaboration between Ultimo, former film writer and WWE creative member Dan Madigan, and Musetap Art Studios, a graphic novel staring the pro wrestling icon was announced to be in the works. This 100 + page graphic novel will bring the story of Ultimo’s legendary mask to life, as its history is traced across hundreds of years, all of which promise to bring the action, excitement and innovation that Ultimo has shown in the ring for over two decades.

Below is a synopsis from the official Kickstarter page:

“It is said that a great warrior chieftain is the one that created the code for which the wearer of the mask should live by…that with knowledge, courage and strength comes with a great price…for centuries…the mask has found itself being handed down from tribe to tribe…then from clan to clan…never owned by one people…but always used by those that needed it…that needed its courage and wisdom…and strength that lie within it….there may come a day in the time of our people that one of you may have to wear this mask…it is a great undertaking…for one may wear the mask on the outside…but the mask owns you on the inside…I hope that day…never comes.”

As an attempt to make Ultimo more well known to American audiences, the project seems to have so much potential right out of the gate. For more information on the writers, artists, funding the project or on the book itself, check out the Kickstarter page. Until then, watch the teaser trailer and let us know if Ultimo Dragon will earn a spot on your bookshelf when the project is released.

2K Games has announced that its first foray into a wrestling ring with WWE 2K14, which will hit stores on October 29th for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

When THQ filed for bankruptcy, many of its franchises were up for grabs, including the WWE line of games. The future of the series was anyone’s guess until 2K grabbed hold of the license, bringing a sense of gaming legitimacy better than a returning Brock Lesnar ever could.

But it’s hard to be excited when we’ve seen nothing of the game, and that’s what I really want! Rumors suggest that The Rock (Dwayne Johnson?) will be on the cover and the game will still be developed by the Japanese crew at Yukes, so I’m thinking that things won’t change much gameplay wise. 2K promises that the game “will combine the studio’s signature gameplay with 2K’s commitment to authenticity.” Considering 2K is one of the leaders in sports gaming, the idea of their presentation within a WWE package sounds exciting, even if it’s not really a “sport.”

Check back with Geekscape.net as details unfold, most likely at this year’s E3.

WWE champion and longtime comic book fan Phil Brooks, who you guys probably know better as CM Punk, will be writing the intro to Marvel’s upcoming hardcover edition of Avengers vs X-Men. A quite vocal supporter of the comic industry, Brooks said this about the opportunity:

“I worked really hard to get to where I’m at and it’s cool to be afforded opportunities like this. To me, it’s hard work paying off and I’m having a lot of fun right now. There’s good and there’s bad, but if you don’t stop to smell the roses, so to speak, it’s all for naught. If I had to describe my writing style, it’s very sarcastic and self-deprecating. You’ll be able to tell it in the foreword.”

Marvel Editor In Chief Axel Alonso also commented:

“Who understands the theatrical nuances of a good smack down more than WWE champ CM Punk, who brings the same muscle and heart he beings to the ring to his brilliant intro for Avengers vs. X-Men.”

Looking to expand on the upgrades that WWE 12 brought to the ring, THQ has unveiled some of the new bells and whistles that wrestling gamers can look forward to in the upcoming WWE 13.

Looking to improve on the overall presentation to make it feel more like you’re playing in front of a crowd of 10,000 plus piss drunk fans, crowd noise is expected to react appropriately to the action in the ring. If you pull off a big move? Expect the fans to jump out of their seats. Let’s just hope that every match takes place in New York, Miami, Chicago or Philly, because realistic crowds anywhere else usually means uncomfortable silence… oh wait, here comes Cena! Now you can cheer!

It’ll be much easier to pull off big moments too, with new spectacular moments that finally let us pull off some of the crazy happenings that make us fans to begin with. Things like reversing moves into finishers, chaining pinning combinations into reversals and even wrecking the whole f’ing ring will be possible.

And to top it all off, commentary is looking to be improved by bringing in two sets of announcers, (Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler for current stars while good ole’ Jim Ross and King take over for the announced Attitude Era stars,) that will actually respond to what’s happening in the ring. You know, instead of the generic, bored banter we’re used to having repeat every five seconds.

Can’t get enough grappling and baby oil? Check out these features in action while we count down the days until October 30th.

What was an apparent leak earlier this afternoon, the reveal trailer for the upcoming WWE 13 from THQ hit the web, but was quickly pulled from every web page that dared to post it.

Promising a “revolution,” WWE had been hyping up the reveal for May 28th during Monday Night Raw through cryptic videos that gave no real clue as to what it was hyping. That revolution is seemingly an updated version of the revamped WWE 12 from last year, showing off new cinematic match sequences such as the ring collapsing after a top rope suplex, destrucable barricades that go into the crowd, and old favorites from wrestling’sboom period such as Mankind and Stone Cold Steve Austin.

But most importantly, current WWE Champion CM Punk is the cover boy this time around, which not only gets my Hulk Hogan PJ’s bunched up in excitement, but after he brought mainstream attention to the company last year through his “unscripted” roast of the company he worked for, was there really any other choice?

WWE 13 will arrive on November 1st, but check back on Monday for when the trailer is”officially” released

Oh, April 1st. What a day you’re sure to be. One full of so many surprises, most of which people will skeptical over. Of course, I’m talking about the day of Wrestlemania 28.

On this day of days, what better way to celebrate one of the greatest games of its time? One that goes down as one of the single best representations of a licensed property since the creation of video games. Of course, I’m talking about WWF Betrayal.

This tiny cartridge was so jam packed with awesome, most gamers were intimidated to load it up into their Game Boy Color’s. But not this guy! No, back when it was released in 2001, I was up to the challenge that this game brought. And now, I’m here to right this wrong and make sure more gamers put boots to asses in this forgotten masterpiece.

Featuring a jam packed roster of four superstars, (now take that in for a moment… FOUR!) your favorite grappler was sure to be at your disposal. That is of course, assuming The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Undertaker or Triple H were your favorite grappler. After your chosen character is cheated out of the WWF title, Stephanie McMahon is kidnapped during your bout. Considering that security was too busy watching your match to do their job, Vince promises to give you a rematch. But only IF you rescue her. It’s really riveting stuff.

Traversing through the streets, sewers and rooftops as your pixelated fighter, the superstars are forced to hold their own in their toughest battles yet. Sure, they’ve faced off with masked demons like Kane, 7 foot tall monsters like The Big Show and even the temptation of necrophilia, but you know it’s about to go down when you’re face to face with the dreaded construction worker! Or the vicious security guard! Even what appears to be killer prostitutes!

This beat em up shows off each character’s extensive move-set, ranging from punching, kicking and a finishing move (kind of like Cena’s move-set today). It’s also very admirable that the developers went through so much trouble to realistically animate each attack, some even consisting of three frames of movement.

At the end of each of the three whole stages in this unforgettable gem, you’re confronted by a menacing boss. Each boss matches up with your guy in almost every way, especially since they’re automatically one of the three wrestlers you didn’t choose. There’s nothing more rewarding than trading the dreaded punch or the unstoppable kick against someone who’s exactly like you, especially when you have to do it three times. I mean, words can’t describe how exciting this was! And by the time you reach the end, it turns out that Vince was responsible for the kidnapping all along! Does it make sense? Hell no! But come on! It’s wrestling!

Most wrestling gamers will tell you that No Mercy is the greatest wrestling game of all time. Well, not only would they be wrong, they’d be stupid. I mean… I know WWF Betrayal didn’t actually have any wrestling in it. The short 45 minutes of play time is greatly extended by the multiple half hours it will take to finish the whole game three more times with the other wrestlers.

And please don’t whine about how the characters hardly looked like themselves. Four fighters that play exactly the same take up a TON of memory and you’re lucky you got any detail at all. The only thing that comes close to the greatness of this title is WWF Crush Hour, since there was nothing more innovative than putting wrestlers in a car combat game! Well, nothing except a ridiculous beat em up! So go ahead, try to find a copy of WWF Betrayal. It might be the greatest way to burn through an hour that you’ll ever find. And that’s the bottom line, because this geek behind his computer said so!

Game: WWF Betrayal

Platform: Game Boy Color

Where to Find: Garage sales, garbage dumps, in the posession of the “It’s still real to me, dammit!” guy (like our writer Joe Starr for example)
