Did last night’s explosive episode of Arrow leaving you wanting more? Well, you’re going to have to wait a few weeks until the next episode hits the air. On March 20th, Helena Bertenelli is making her return to Starling City and this is anything but good news for Oliver Queen.

EDM MEGASTAR STEVE AOKI OPENS OLIVER’S NEW NIGHTCLUB — With his nightclub set to open and a new romance brewing with McKenna (guest star Janina Gavankar), Oliver (Stephen Amell) is as happy as he’s been since returning to Starling City. But when Oliver’s ex, The Huntress (guest star Jessica De Gouw), suddenly returns to town, she threatens to destroy everything and everyone he cares about. Meanwhile, Laurel (Katie Cassidy) and her father (Paul Blackthorne) struggle with the return of Dinah Lance (guest star Alex Kingston) who claims she has proof Sara is still alive. Thea (Willa Holland) gets Roy Harper (guest star Colton Haynes) a job at Oliver’s club, but he’s not too inclined to stop his life of crime. Oliver and Tommy (Colin Donnell) are thrilled they were able to get Steve Aoki to play at the opening of their new nightclub, Verdant. David Ramsey and Susanna Thompson also star. Guy Bee directed the episode written by Jake Coburn & Lana Cho (117).

Tomorrow’s edition of Batman Incorporated will feature a very unexpected death. Damian Wayne, the 10 year old son of Bruce Wayne and Talia Al Ghul will fall victim to an assassin cloned from his very own genes. Dang.

If he has to go… at least he goes out a hero, writer Grant Morrison confirmed that “He saves the world. He does his job as Robin. He dies an absolute hero.”

Damian’s death has been crafted to focus how parents can lose sight of their children when they fight. It’s certainly an interesting time to kill the character off, as the current Boy Wonder is much loved by fans of the DC Universe.

Again, Damian will lose his final fight in tomorrow’s Batman Incorporated #8; the death will be reflected throughout the DC Universe. Check out the issue’s cover below (a clear homage to Morrison’s Batman RIP), let us know what you think! How will you handle Damian’s death? How do you think that Bruce will take it?

Less than two weeks after Aquaman’s announcement, Warner Bros. Interactive has revealed Sinestro as the latest character to join the ranks of Injustice: Gods Among Us.

The character’s moves and abilities are still unknown, but that should all change on Friday when Injustice’s next Battle Arena video is released.

Screen Shot 2013-02-25 at 8.07.22 PM

What do you think of this addition? Who are you most excited to play as? Will you be picking up Injustice: Gods Among Us when it hits shelves on April 16th?

The game is looking pretty rad… but so did Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe, and we all know how that turned out.

Well, it looks like there’s one hell of an episode of Arrow coming next week. First off, it’s written by DC Comics writer Geoff Johns. Second, you’ve got Deadshot and China White returning to take out Merlyn aka The Dark Archer. Let’s just say that we can’t wait to see this one.

DEADSHOT RETURNS — Oliver (Stephen Amell) and Diggle (David Ramsey) learn that Deadshot (guest star Michael Rowe) is still alive and his next target is Malcom (John Barrowman). Malcom invites Tommy (Colin Donnell) to attend a benefit honoring Malcom for his work with Starling City but Tommy refuses to attend. Oliver encourages his friend to mend his relationship with his father while he can. Meanwhile, Oliver struggles to balance his new relationship with McKenna [Janina Gavankar] and his duties as Arrow. Katie Cassidy, Paul Blackthorne and Susanna Thompson also star. Glen Winter directed the episode written by Geoff Johns (##116).

Were you a fan of Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuiness Superman/Batman series from 2003? Been hoping that the New 52 would see another team-up series between the two characters? Well, you’re in luck because Batman/Superman is coming to the New 52, from the creative team of Greg Pak (X-Treme X-Men) and Jae Lee (Before Watchmen: Ozymandias), that will deal with the early days of the two iconic characters and how they first crossed paths.

Check out an extended look at next week’s episode of Arrow which will feature the debut of Colton Haynes as Roy Harper. Miss last week’s episode? Well, you better catch up.

COLTON HAYNES (“TEEN WOLF”) GUEST STARS AS ROY HARPER — Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) tells Oliver (Stephen Amell) he’s all work and no play, so he asks Detective McKenna (guest star Janina Gavankar) on a date. A jewel thief named Dodger (guest star James Callis) hits Starling City and targets someone very close to Oliver. Meanwhile, while working with Laurel (Katie Cassidy), Thea (Willa Holland) gets her purse stolen by a very fast pickpocket named Roy Harper (guest star Haynes). Moira (Susanna Thompson) makes a move against Malcom (John Barrowman). Colin Donnell and Paul Blackthorne also star. Eagle Egilsson directed the episode written by Beth Schwartz (#115).

This game just keeps getting cooler.

Warner Bros. Interactive revealed today that Aquaman will be joining the multitude of characters taking a stand in Injustice: Gods Among Us. A fairly badass reveal trailer accompanied the announcement, and if it’s any indication, Aquaman will be a force to be reckoned with.

Check out the trailer below, and let us know what you think! Injustice: Gods Among Us hits PS3 and Xbox 360 on April 16th. The game is NOT coming to Wii U as was previously believed.

“Gods Among Us” debuts as a bold new fighting game franchise that introduces a deep, original story featuring a large cast of favorite DC Comics icons such as Batman, Cyborg, Harley Quinn, Nightwing, Deathstroke, Solomon Grundy, Superman, Lex Luthor, The Flash, Green Arrow, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Bane, Catwoman, Shazam, the Joker, and more. Set in a world where the lines between good and evil are blurred, players will experience heroes and villains engaging in epic battles on a massive scale.

The CW has released a brand new extended look at what is in store for the rest of this season on the hit series Arrow. You have two choices, escape or die. Well, that or you could watch the video below.

After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen was missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the Pacific. When he returns home to Starling City, his devoted mother Moira, much-beloved sister Thea, and best friend Tommy welcome him home, but they sense Oliver has been changed by his ordeal on the island. While Oliver hides the truth about the man he’s become, he desperately wants to make amends for the actions he took as the boy he was. Most particularly, he seeks reconciliation with his former girlfriend, Laurel Lance. As Oliver reconnects with those closest to him, he secretly creates the persona of Arrow – a vigilante to right the wrongs of his family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory. By day, Oliver plays the role of a wealthy, carefree and careless philanderer he used to be – flanked by his devoted chauffeur/bodyguard, John Diggle – while carefully concealing the secret identity he turns to under cover of darkness. However, Laurel’s father, Detective Quentin Lance, is determined to arrest the vigilante operating in his city. Meanwhile, Oliver’s own mother, Moira, knows much more about the deadly shipwreck than she has let on and is more ruthless than he could ever imagine.

Arrow airs Wednesday nights on The CW.

I’ve been wondering when we’d be able to step into Batman’s shoes once more; if this information is correct, a new game could be much closer than anticipated!

It looks as thought the folks over at ComingSoon have been doing some digging. After picking through Warner’s Q1 Earnings Report, they’ve learned that a new Arkham title will be revealed (and possibly released) sometime this year!

While no game has officially been announced, it was Warner CFO John K. Martin that couldn’t hold his tongue, stating

“We also have a strong games release this year, which will include the next release in the Batman Arkham franchise. So all in all, we expect Warners to post another very strong year in 2013.”

No official details for the next title are currently known, but earlier this year it was rumoured that we’d find Bats in a prequel setting, meeting Joker for the very first time.

What do you think? Excited to see another game in the Arkham series (how could you not be)?

Update: According to sources close to VG247, the prequel title is in development at Rocksteady, but it is NOT the follow-up to Arkham City. The next Arkham title that Warner mentioned is rumoured to be in development by Spark Unlimited (Lost Planet 3, Legendary: The Box).

The CW’s hit DC Comics television adaptation Arrow (that most of us here at Geekscape love), which stars Stephen Amell as Green Oliver Queen, has been a success ever since it first premiered last October. So, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the network has chosen to pick up the series for a second season. Check out the full press release below.

The CW Network has given early pickups to three of its hit series for next season, including freshman hit ARROW, its top-rated drama THE VAMPIRE DIARIES and fan favorite SUPERNATURAL, it was announced today by Mark Pedowitz, President, The CW. All three shows will return in Fall 2013.

“We said last year that one of our goals was to establish building blocks to grow on, and now with our new hit ARROW and fan favorite SUPERNATURAL on Wednesday night, and the continued success of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES on Thursday, we’ve been able to do that,” said Pedowitz. “Not only do ARROW, SUPERNATURAL, and THE VAMPIRE DIARIES perform well on-air, they’re also extremely successful for us both digitally and socially. I’m thrilled to have all three shows returning to our schedule next season.”

One of the true breakout hits of the season, ARROW posted The CW’s best series premiere since 2009 and currently stands as the network’s most watched show (4.3mil). Heading into its fifth season next fall, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES remains The CW’s highest rated series in target demographics, including adults 18-34 and women 18-34. THE VAMPIRE DIARIES also continues to be one of the network’s top performing shows digitally and socially; in fact, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES recently topped Trendrr’s list as network TV’s #1 social program for the week of January 21–27.

The Winchester brothers of SUPERNATURAL will continue to fight the forces of evil for a ninth season. Since being paired with ARROW on Wednesday this year, SUPERNATURAL has seen a dramatic uptick in its ratings from last season, rising 15% among total viewers, 10% in adults 18-34 and 18% in adults 18-49.

After nearly 10 years on the book, Geoff Johns will be stepping down as the writer of Green Lantern. The writer, who was tasked with making Green Lantern relevant again and influenced the big screen adaptation of the character, has announced he will be leaving the title this May to focus on other titles that he is currently writing. Johns stated:

blackest_night_2_1600x1200

“I’m really proud of all the stuff we’ve built with Green Lantern, from Larfleeze to the different corps. The universe has expanded and will live well past my run. It was more than just telling another story, but really giving back to the character by expanding and adding to their mythology.”

Johns will be focusing more of his effort on Justice League, Justice League Of America, and Aquaman.  Johns has promised a huge departure issue for the series when his run ends with issue #20, which will be a 64 page issue drawn by Doug Mahkne.

Actor Chin Han (The Dark Knight) will be be making the move from Gotham City to Starling City for a recurring role in The CW’s Arrow. The actor will play the role of Frank Chen, who is described as “a successful businessman and old friend of the Queen family.”

The character is also a member of ‘The Undertaking’, the mysterious group led by Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman). There’s not much more known about the character, but it seems like we can expect him to cause some trouble for the Queen family.

Check out an extended preview for next week’s episode of Arrow. The episode features David Anders (Once Upon A Time, Heroes) as Cyrus Vanch, the series first original villain! Anders was great as a villain on Heroes and we can’t wait to see what he brings to Starling City next week. Well, that and the addition of Manu Bennett as Slade Wilson/Deathstroke. It’s going to be a long week waiting for this one.

DAVID ANDERS (“ONCE UPON A TIME,” “THE VAMPIRE DIARIES”) GUEST STARS — Cyrus Vanch (Anders), a nefarious criminal, is recently released from prison and intends to re-secure his position as leader of the underworld. His first step is to take down his biggest opponent in the city – Arrow (Stephen Amell). Meanwhile, Oliver shows Moira (Susanna Thompson) his father’s notebook and questions her about the names on the list. Thea (Willa Holland) is miserable as she starts her internship with Laurel (Katie Cassidy) at the legal aid office and Detective Lance (Paul Blackthorne) makes a deadly mistake that puts Laurel in the crosshairs of Vanch. David Ramsey and Colin Donnell also star. Guy Bee directed the episode written by Lana Cho & Beth Schwartz (#113)

Everyone around these parts seems to be quite looking forward to Injustice: Gods Among Us. It’s a new brawler from the creators of Mortal Kombat, one of the available editions comes with an awesome looking fight stick, and of course we’ve got all of our favourite characters from the DC universe.

Up until now however, we had no idea what the game was about. Sure, everyone’s fighting, but just what is all the fuss about? Today, just over two months before the game releases, Warner Bros. Interactive has filled us in. A new trailer has been released for the game, featuring pretty much all the plot they could squeeze into two minutes.

Check out the new trailer below, and let us know what you think! Injustice: Gods Among Us hits PS3 and Xbox 360 on April 16th!

Courtesy of The Huffington Post TV, we’ve got our first look at Manu Bennett (Spartacus, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) as the popular DC Comics assassin Deathstroke’s alter-ego, Slade Wilson. Episode 13 of Arrow will see the debut of Bennett as Wilson as him and Oliver Queen “form an uneasy alliance on the island of Lian Yu”.

“Betrayal”: Cyrus Vanch (Anders), a nefarious criminal, is recently released from prison and intends to re-secure his position as leader of the underworld. His first step is to take down his biggest opponent in the city –- Arrow (Amell). Meanwhile, Oliver shows Moira (Susanna Thompson) his father’s notebook and questions her about the names on the list. The CW’s Arrow is back and so is “The Mark”, our weekly rundown of the series. The mid-season break is over and Oliver Queen is back.  Did the mid-season return “heat” up or fizzle out? Well, I am happy to say that things are definitely “heating up” in Starling City. Minus a not-so-action packed finale, with an ending that you didn’t completely expect, it was another solid episode for the series.

Burned

The episode picks up six weeks after the Dark Archer’s attack before the break and we find Oliver shaken and quite off his game. Well, he’s going to have to get his head in the game because there’s someone going around killing firefighters and it’s a job that seems to be more than the police can handle. Who is it that’s doing this? Well, that would be Arrow-verse version of DC Comics villain Firefly. Oh, come on don’t act like you didn’t already know about that one. It’s a pretty dark introduction to the character and actually one of the best opening’s that the series has had.

mark-burned-2

The episode also saw the residents of Starling City go from calling the character a vigilante to a hero. After being gone for six weeks, the effect he has had has been seen and they want him back. The hero Starling City deserves, but not the one that’s anywhere to be seen right now? Okay, there’s the one Nolan joke about the series that I will make.

Overall it was a solid episode and really expanded upon all of the sub-plots, but did leave a bit to be desired. The action and tension were well done, minus the finale. While I did enjoy the Arrow-verse’s take on Firefly, the character met a demise that seemed way too quick. The finale of the episode lacked a bit in the action department and seemed to kind of “fizzle out” at the end. I did like how Lynns went out, but I definitely would have liked to have seen more lead up to it than we got.

Burned

The episode did continue leaving me wanting more of the series and there’s plenty to come. Wondering when Roy Harper is going to show up in Starling City? That is going to be Episode 15. Did you want more Deadshot? Well, he’ll be back and teaming up with China White in Episode 16. Want to learn more about the Dark Archer’s backstory? You’re going to and that’s just some of the stuff coming this season. Are you excited to see the rest of the season? We definitely are. Check out the promo for next week’s episode “Trust But Verify” below!

Not long ago it was rumored that Guillermo del Toro was going to be working on a team-up film featuring a number of the characters from DC Comics darker side. From the description and the team rumored to appear the film sounded like it would be a loose interpretation of the New 52’s Justice League Dark.

Del Toro has now finally confirmed that he is indeed working on the project, which will be called Dark Universe,  and is currently writing an outline for the film. The director also goes on to reveal that he will be working with another writer who is “the perfect guy for the job”. Del Toro wouldn’t reveal just who the writer is but did state they really want to do this and are awaiting the green-light from Warner Bros.

So, what about the characters who will be appearing in the film? Well, Del Toro confirms that if the film gets the green-light we will at least (fingers crossed on Buddy Baker aka Animal Man) see Swamp Thing, John Constantine (still no word if this will be the same character from the previous film), Deadman, Etrigan, The Spectre, Zatanna and Zatara in the film.

It’s not as exciting as the AWESOME trailer that premiered last month, but at least it’s something.

USA Today has unveiled their 13 big movies for 2012, and of course Man of Steel is a part of it. Next to their write-up? Well a brand new still photo of course! The image is a close up of Henry Cavill, with some nicely-bokeh’d army personnel in the background.

Man of Steel flies into theatres (and out hearts) on June 14th.

“In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Cavill) is a young twentysomething journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone’s imagination. Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question – Why am I here? Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Costner), Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions. But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer? Clark must become the hero known as “Superman,” not only to shine as the world’s last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves.”

This are going to be heating up when Arrow returns on January 16th. “Burned”, the first episode of Arrow  in 2013, will see Oliver Queen go head to head against DC Comics villain Firefly (played by Andrew Dunbar). This version of Firefly is a former firefighter who becomes embittered after being injured in the line of duty.  Check out some stills below giving a first look at Dunbar as Garfield Lynns aka Firefly.

Welcome to The Week In Comics, an all-new recap and rundown of the week’s news and events in comics. It may have been a slow week as far as releases, but it definitely was still a huge week due to two issues that hit the shelves.

Introducing The Superior Spider-Man!:

This week we were introduced to The Superior Spider-Man in issue #700 (also the final issue) of Amazing Spider-Man. If you haven’t check it out yet, read what I think about the character and why you should actually be excited for this in “The Superior Spider-Man: The Character You’re Going To Love To Hate” here.

Both issue #700 of Amazing Spider-Man and Avenging Spider-Man #15.1 flew off of shelves this Wednesday, with Avenging Spider-Man #15.1 now running around $15 on eBay, and have gone into second printing already. Below (courtesy of MTV Geek) you can check out Humberto Ramos second print variant for issue #700, an homage to Todd McFarlane’s cover from Amazing Spider-Man #300. Trust me when I say this, if you’re a collector do not sleep on this one because it will fly off of shelves as well.

Excelsior! Stan “The Man” Lee Turns 90:

And while on the subject of Spider-Man, we should also take a moment to wish a happy birthday to one of the men behind the creation of the character. A very happy 90th birthday to Stan “The Man” Lee!

“Thrones Of Atlantis” Begins:

Over on the DC shelf this week we saw the start of “Thones Of Atlantis”, the crossover event between Justice League and Aquaman. And if that last panel in #15 of Aquaman was any indication, this may be one event that you do not want to miss.

Could Wally West Be Coming To The DCnU In 2013?:

Now, don’t get your hopes too much yet over this next one but there’s a chance that we may finally see fan-favorite Flash Wally West joining the DCnU next year. It was revealed a bit back that current Flash writers Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato had a plan to bring the character to the DCnU, but there hasn’t been much talk about it since then. Dan Didio, DC’s Senior VP and Executive Editor, however made an interesting Facebook post earlier in the week.

Merry Christmas to Everyone!
Even you Wally. maybe I’ll see you in the New Year.

While this is no form of actual confirmation it is definitely interesting that he would include that there randomly. With Manupal and Buccellato revealing that we will be seeing the reverse flash coming next year, how could would it be if it turned out to be Wally West?

Like I said, this was definitely a small week due to the holidays. But definitely check back with us next week as we recap all the news and events coming to your local long box.

Arrow won’t be back until mid-January, which means you have plenty of time for some good ol’ fashioned comic reading. So, we’re going to share the four essential Green Arrow comic book story lines to hold you over until Oliver Queen returns to your small screen.

4. Quiver

Quiver from writer Kevin Smith and artist Phil Hester tells the tale of the return of the original Green Arrow after being thought dead for a number of years. Many want to know just how he survived the plane crash thought to have killed him and just where he has been. Quite possibly one of the most convincing resurrection stories for a superhero.

3. Hard Travelling Heroes Vol. 2

Hard Travelling Heroes Vol.2 by writer Dennis O’Neil and artist Neal Adams, the team-up between Green Lantern and Green Arrow, also includes one of the most well known of Oliver Queen’s stories “Snowbirds Don’t Fly”. In this we see Roy Harper aka as Speedy, Green Arrow’s sidekick, become a junkie. While the story is somewhat of a cheese filled 70’s tale it definitely did tackle an issue not commonly touched in comics. What made these stories stand out was that rather than focus on action they dealt more with character, something uncommon with the comics of this era.

2. The Longbow Hunters

One of Oliver Queen’s more interesting stories, The Longbow Hunters by writer and artist Mike Grell, sees Oliver and girlfriend Black Canary move to Seattle. The series established Green Arrow as more of a vigilante than a superhero and was pretty damn violent. Grell really downplays the superhero aspect quite a bit and sees Oliver Queen realizing that in some ways he’s lost his way and moving away from his trick arrow and back to the longbow and arrows. Definitely one of the defining story lines for the character.

1. Year One

Arrow takes quite a bit from Year One by writer Andy Diggle and artist Jock. This story told an updated and thrilling re-imagining of Oliver Queen’s beginnings as Green Arrow that kept the essence of the original while updating it very strongly. If you’re a fan of Arrow, this is probably at the top of your “must read” list. Actually, even if you’re not a fan of the show you should read this one.

After an unexpected hiatus, DC Nation is coming back to your Saturday mornings. Young Justice, Green Lantern: The Animated Series and all of your favorite DC shorts will be coming back to Cartoon Network on January 5th. Check out a sneak peek at what’s in store  when the animation block returns.

The CW’s Arrow will return on January 16th and things are about to “heat up” in Starling City. In this episode we will see  Oliver Queen taking on Garfield Lynn aka Firefly and learn even more about “the list” and just who is really behind it. If you missed it, check out our look at the mid-season finale with The Mark.

This week “marked” the mid-season finale of The CW’s Arrow, don’t worry it will only be off the air for a month, and we saw quite arguably the most interesting episode of the series yet. Oliver Queen finds himself confronted by a Dark Archer taking some quite deadly measures to get the attention of the character while The Queens hold a Christmas party and we see Moira try to push Walter off his investigation into “the list”.

This is a return to form for the series after a few not-so-great episodes. We get a return to the flashbacks that were missing over the past two episodes and learn more about what really happened on the island. Oh, and does that included more Deathstroke? Oh yes, indeed it does. Did you the Yao Fei versus Deathstroke fight leave you wanting more? Well, you’re getting it! The episode has plenty of action to keep you  happy after the last few episodes seemed to really lack in that department.

“Year’s End” brought about some interesting new questions and contained plenty of fantastic action sequences that helped make this one of the best episodes of the series. The implication that the Dark Archer may actually be a family tradition is a pretty interesting reveal. And while it wasn’t a major surprise who was behind that mask, it was still a great reveal learning the true identity of the “Dark Archer”. Well, mostly because of the last name that has implied this character since the first episode. As well as the revelation that there may indeed be someone worse out there that is the true mastermind behind this all. Maxwell Lord? One could only hope!

Minus a few stumbles here and there, the series continues putting together an exciting and intelligent re-imagining of our favorite DC characters. Definitely looking forward to what the rest of the season brings, especially after the reveal that Roy Harper would be joining the cast of the series. “The Mark” will be back in January!

The easter eggs and comic references you may have missed:

– “To see who’s the better archer.”: In the comics Merlyn challenges Green Arrow to a public archery contest and defeats him. Later on Green Arrow and Merlyn meet again and at the end of the confrontation Merlyn tells Green Arrow that he’s become “the better archer.”

– The dinner conversation discussing giving “The Hood” a better name. Not quite an easter egg nor comic reference, but definitely a nod to Christopher Nolan’s Bat-films. There was a quite similar scene involving Bruce Wayne and “the vigilante” featured. The scene where he calls Diggle after being injured is also quite similar to a scene seen in Batman Begins.

Warner Bros. Pictures has just released a new full length trailer for next Summer’s highly anticipated Man of Steel. This new trailer gives us a much better look at Supes and the supporting cast, as well as some of the trials they may face during the duration of the film! I don’t want to reveal anything, so just check it out below, and let us know what you think!

Man Of Steel opens on June 14. The film is directed by Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen), and stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Michael Shannon, Lawrence Fishburne, and more!

How excited are you for this one? As long as it’s nothing like Superman Returns, we should be in for a treat!

Earlier this week rumors hit that writer Gail Simone would be leaving the New 52’s Batgirl, but the writer was quick to debunk them. Well, it looks like the rumors were true and DC has taken her off of the title. Simone tweeted:

This is definitely quite unexpected due to the reponse that Simone’s run on Batgirl has received from fans. It’s expected that Simone will end her run with issue #16 after “The Death Of The Family” story arc reaches it’s end.

I’m not one to get particularly sentimental when it comes to creators of the media I consume, let alone executives and editors. Of course, like everyone, I have my  pantheon of persons whom I trust and whose content I relish and devour and track the moment it is in announced but they are few and far between, but even of those, I know which projects I might cling to and which I can avoid. That said, there was one imprint I trusted fully when I wanted to try something new, back when my income was more disposable than it is now; before the recession, before I was an ‘adult’. The imprint in question was Vertigo Comics, and the reason I trusted it was by and large because of Executive Editor and Senior Vice President Karen Berger.

An end of an era has come, as DC has officially announced that Berger shall be leaving Vertigo and DC Entertainment this coming March in a statement released Monday:

Karen Berger, Executive Editor & Senior Vice President of DC Entertainment’s Vertigo brand, has announced she is stepping down from her post after nearly 20 years at the helm of the award-winning literary imprint. She will remain on through March 2013 where she will be assisting in the transition to a new leadership team which includes veteran staffers whom she has mentored over the years.

As I am writing this, I am more than a little choked up. Tears are stinging my eyes, as I look at my physical comic book collection (I have gone mostly digital in the past few years) and think back on my development as a comic book reader over the last decade. From the near-universally adored Sandman and Fables, the controversial-but-profitable V for Vendetta, to the practically unknown 12-issue run of the Vinyl Underground. Berger was behind each of these titles and shaped my reading and understanding of comics in ways that the mainstream superhero titles could not. They explored heavier philosophical ideas, endured more mature themes (not just violence and sex, but the many shades of gray that gradient between our concepts of right and wrong), and they kept my interest in the graphic medium when spandexed crime fighters began to feel a little too puerile even for me. Vertigo was like an independent publisher but with the luxury of a corporation behind it. Under Berger, it took chances at every turn and refused to rest on its laurels, even when the money made sense to do so.

As a girl real reading comics, it didn’t hurt that she was a woman. I remember the first time I flipped through a volume of Sandman and saw her name in small print on the inside cover. I must have been fifteen or so  when I ran to my mother enthusiastically and said, “Look! We can work in comics. She did it, so can I!” Even though I am writing this article in a feature called “Heroine Addict,” which is all about women and their place, role, and future in geek culture and genre fiction, I still forget how much it means to see other women succeeding and paving the way for future female creatives and executives. Visibility matters.

It only helped that she managed such a strong and stable history of amazing titles and creators filter through during her tenure. American Virgin, TransmetropolitanGarth Ennis, Grant Morrison. Household names now, but then? What would life be like if Karen Berger hadn’t been there? Certainly some of the greats would have made it through, but in a world where George R. R. Martin turned down Neil Gaiman to write for an anthology because he was too unknown, one cannot truly surmise how greatly she has impacted us as individuals, let alone as a community. I do not want to spend too much time on hypotheticals, but one thing is certain: for the past decade when I picked up a number one of a new title or bought a trade by an author with whom I was not yet familiar, if it had the Vertigo logo on it, I knew I was in for some solid storytelling, brilliant ideas, and great characters.

We do not know yet where Berger plans to go from Vertigo. She simply said that she was in need of a “career change,” and in light of DC pulling the plug on Hellblazer and other Vertigo staples coming to an end, one can only speculate that even with Fables, its spin-offs continuing their runs, and Sandman returning in March, this very well appears to be Vertigo’s twilight. Lucky, for me, there is still a back catalog of work that was produced under her tenure that I have yet to complete (namely Y: The Last Man and Scalped), and a few I couldn’t quite get behind but may revisit (i.e., Preacher—I loved the ideas, but sometimes the gore was just too gruesome for me to get past). At least for now, there is more to be read and, of course, her legacy will remain in print thanks to trades and digital publishing. But what of the future—for both Vertigo and Berger? We will have to wait and see: one with morbid curiosity, the other with hope.

So it seems we now know who the main villain is probably going to be in the upcoming Justice League movie, and it is quite possibly exactly who you might expect it to be; Darkseid, the God of Evil, and the DC Universe’s #1 bad guy. The rumor comes from Latino Review’s El Mayimbe, and if you’ve heard the name before, it’s probably because he has run many rumors in the last several years (especially concerning super hero movies) that have turned out to be very accurate. He’s as trusted a source as it gets when it comes to this stuff.

Darkseid being the villain makes sense. As I said, he’s the DC Universe’s biggest threat, and the kind of bad guy that would require Superman to actually need a lot of help to defeat. The opening storyline of the New 52 Justice League book seemed like a rough draft for a JL movie, and I doubt that was a coincidence. (although the similarity to that story and the Avengers movie might mean some story tweeking will be in order, just so the general audience doesn’t have even more reasons to see JL as a rip-off of Avengers.) Since Thanos is going to be the villain in Avengers 2, part of me is slightly surprised that Warners is going with Darkseid, since Thanos was inspired by Darkseid in the first place, and Avengers 2 is no doubt coming out first, having already claimed the May 1st 2015 weekend. But hey…I remember when two “giant asteroid coming to the destroy the Earth” movies came out the same summer, and Armageddon and Deep Impact both  ended up doing ok. So maybe two craggy faced alien despots won’t make America’s heads explode.

The Justice League movie has no director or casting yet, but it scheduled to be in theaters summer 2015, along with Avengers 2 and Star Wars: Episode VII, giving sad and lonely nerds everywhere a reason to delay any suicide attempts till at least 2016.

It looks like work has begun in earnest searching for the lead in the CW’s new Smallville-esque take on Wonder Woman called Amazon, spear-headed by comic book writer Allan Heinberg. There is only a pilot script for this right now (if that) but the CW is getting all their ducks in a row looking for the right woman to fill the tiara. According to Deadline.com, here is the official description for what they’re looking for:

“Iris comes from a remote, secluded country and until now has spent most of her life as a soldier and a leader on the battlefield. Because of relentless brutality of her life at home, Iris looks at our world with absolute awe and astonishment. She’s delighted and just as often horrified by the aspects of everyday life that we take for granted: skyscrapers, traffic, ice cream. It’s all new and fascinating and sometimes slightly troubling to her. Iris is completely unschooled in our world, our culture, our customs. And she’s completely inexperienced at interpersonal relationships. She has no social filter, does not suffer fools, and tends to do and say exactly what’s on her mind at all times. She’s bluntly, refreshingly honest. She can tell when you’re lying to her. And she doesn’t have time or patience for politics or tact because she’s too busy trying to experience everything our world has to offer. There are too many sights to see and things to learn and people to care for. Hers is a true, noble, and generous heart. And she will fight and die for the people she loves. Iris is a fierce warrior with the innocent heart of a romantic and she will fight to the death to make the world safe for innocents and true romantics everywhere.”

Aside from the “relentless brutality of her life at home” part, the rest sounds like classic Diana. And yes, she WILL be called Diana….the name Iris is just a code name used for casting sides when doing auditions. This has already been confirmed by DC CCO Geoff Johns on Twitter. So relax everyone. As a huge Wonder Woman fan, I sincerely hope this meets with the same success that the CW has had with Arrow.

Hopefully this Wonder Woman TV project will fare better than the ill-fated version from last year starring Adrianne Palicki in a Party City costume.
