Welcome back to Let’s Play Arcade!

The outline of this show is simple. We’ve got:

Two best friends.
One randomly selected Apple Arcade game.
Two fresh new semi-randomly selected beers (we basically just grab something new that we see on the shelf).

We don’t talk about the game at all before we record, so we’ll be learning each other’s thoughts and impressions live on air. At the end of each episode, we’ll also randomly draw the game for our next offering, so you’ll always know what’s coming up on the next adventure.

Part of the appeal of doing this show was just getting to “hang out” more often. Back in the day we’d be able to meet up for a beer, but because of where we live at this point, it just can’t really happen. For each episode of Let’s Play Arcade!, we’ll also be cracking open (and sort-of reviewing) a random beer as well. Neither of us really know anything about beer (or drink it all that often), so while we don’t know what anyone has to gain from us talking about them, we’ll see what happens!

Each episode will also feature an ‘after show’, where we’ll basically drivel on about whatever we feel like (stick around after the end theme if you want to listen).

This episode, can The Pinball Wizard finally end John’s streak of hating everything that’s ever existed? You’ll have to listen to find out!

Oh, young Apprentice! Atop the Mountain of Shadow, at the foot of the castle tower, the wisdom bestowed upon you shall come to pass. A pinball dungeon crawler awaits to test your skill!

Ascend the castle tower. Level up your skills. Fulfill your destiny. Become the wizard you were born to be!

The Pinball Wizard is an arcade adventure game where the main character is propelled into action by a set of flippers, like the ball in a pinball machine. Each level of the game is a contained area inside a tower. The goal of the game is to survive and get to the top of the tower.

Welcome to Xbox Game Passengers.

Every other Wednesday, host Derek and a guest will dissect and discuss just one game available on Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass service, which was chosen for them completely at random.

Whether it’s a magical or a horrible experience, they’ll force themselves through it, share their thoughts, and let you know whether or not the game is worth your time! At the end of each episode, they’ll also randomly select the game for the following show.

In this episode, Mike returns to break down 2017’s lauded adventure title, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. It’s a much different experience than either host expected and… they spend far too much time wondering if the world will ever see a sequel as they recorded this episode just days before Senua’s Saga was revealed.

From the makers of Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and DmC: Devil May Cry, comes a warrior’s brutal journey into myth and madness. Set in the Viking age, a broken Celtic warrior embarks on a haunting vision quest into Viking Hell to fight for the soul of her dead lover. Created in collaboration with neuroscientists and people who experience psychosis, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice will pull you deep into Senua’s mind.

The world’s fastest hedgehog is back in SONIC RACING! Take control of one of 15 playable characters from the Sonic universe and compete in the ultimate multiplayer racing experience. COLLECT power-ups, SET traps and ATTACK competitors all while driving at high speed. Ready, Set, RACE!

Dougie returns to chat about one of Derek’s most anticipated (and surprise — favourite) games of 2019, The Outer Worlds. It’s pretty much the best Fallout game that we’ve had in years, and brings some cool and original ideas to the table as well.

Lost in transit while on a colonist ship bound for the furthest edge of the galaxy, you awake decades later only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy the Halcyon colony. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.

Theme Song: I Adore My C64 by Nicolai Heidlas from HookSounds.com

Back in January of 2017 we featured Jason Inman, Ashley Victoria Robinson, and Ben Matsuya’s Jupiter Jet in a Crowdfund This column.

The project ended up clearing over 180% of its Kickstarter goal, and the first volume of Jupiter Jet was even nominated for a Ringo award for Best Kids Comic or Graphic Novel.

Naturally, a single volume of the celebrated series wasn’t enough for fans, and today Jason, Ashley, and Ben (and publisher Action Labs) have finally unveiled a new crowdfunding campaign for a 120-page Jupiter Jet volume 2, Jupiter Jet and the Forgotten Radio!

The Kickstarter campaign for the new volume has only just launched, and features tons of goodies for new and old fans of Jupiter Jet. The creative trio is looking for a cool $17,500 to fund the book, and if early pledges are any indication, Juper Jet and the Forgotten Radio should fly past its goal very quickly.

Robinson notes that a “book about space lizards, asteroid belt chases, and fighting with your family, combines three things I love reading the most. Bringing some of my favorite things to one of my favorite characters I’ve created has been such a blast,” and having had an opportunity to read the first 20 pages of the book, her passion for the project (and Inman’s and Matsuya’s of course) seeps across every panel.

Described as Kim Possible crossed with A Fistful of Dollars (two IP’s that I never imagined would be mentioned together), Jupiter Jet and the Forgotten Radio is:

One girl’s journey on the brink of adulthood to remind herself that the world will always be bigger than you think and that your parents aren’t always perfect. Jupiter Jet and the Forgotten Radio celebrates the confidence that comes on the precipice of adulthood and the hard lessons we learn when we don’t know everything – and introduces a brand new jetpack!

Just like last time around, there are some amazing rewards available for backers. These include exclusive early copies of the book with cover art by Spawn’s Jonboy Meyers, prints from Nicola Scott (Earth 2), and b2rianls (painter Brian Lopez who Ashley also collaborated with on Aurora and the Eagle), and incredibly, script and portfolio critiques by industry professionals including: Steve Lieber (Superman’s Pal: Jimmy Olsen, Detective Comics), Mitch Gerads (Mister Miracle, Batman), and David Booher (Canto, Alien Bounty Hunter).

There’s a lot to love about Jupiter Jet — take a look at the Jupiter Jet and the Forgotten Radio Kickstarter video below, and head to the official Kickstarter campaign page for more information, and to back this fantastic project!

Can’t get enough of Jason or Ashley? Ashley was just a guest on one of Geekscape’s newest podcast’s, My Favourite Episode Of, and Jason was on Geekscape this past Summer!

This episode we dig deep into Spaceland, which is “probably the most dynamic turn-based strategy in the spirit of the old school” (at least according to the game’s App Store description). It’s a turn-based strategy title (think XCOM), and we have a lot to say about it.

It is probably the most dynamic turn-based strategy in the spirit of the old school. Less covers, more action! Land on a lost planet and show the mutants what you are made of. Shoot, kick, blow up and destroy. You will put together the most reckless team of fighters and unravel the mysteries of the mystical planet following the best traditions of science fiction.

Mikaela returns after a long hiatus to chat about the quirky, spooky, and gorgeous adventure game, Oxenfree. Spoiler: she very clearly doesn’t like it and Derek spends the entire episode defending it.

Oxenfree is a supernatural thriller about a group of friends who unwittingly open a ghostly rift. Play as Alex, a bright, rebellious teenager who brings her new stepbrother Jonas to an overnight party on an old military island. The night takes a terrifying turn when you unwittingly open a ghostly gate spawned from the island’s cryptic past. How you deal with these events, your peers, and the ominous creatures you’ve unleashed is up to you.

YOU determine every aspect of Alex’s story while exploring Edwards Island, uncovering the base’s dark past, and changing the course of your friends’ lives.

This episode, we’re talking about the Apple Arcade critical darling Neo Cab, and our opinions of the game surprised even us.

Hold on to humanity in a world overcome by automation. Play as Lina, the last human driver-for-hire on the streets of Los Ojos. Your friend and only lifeline has gone missing; with no money and nowhere to stay, your only leads are the passengers that get in your car.

From the Neo Cab app, you’ll choose your passengers and navigate the city grid. Each character you meet has their own story to tell and secrets to share, if you can figure out what they want to hear.

But watch what you say—you’ll need to maintain your star rating to stay on the road. Plus, every choice you make affects your mood, and your mood will affect what choices are available to you.

Can you make enough money to crash in fancy hotels, or will you sleep in your car? Will you be able to get passengers to open up to you, without selling out your own emotional health?

As you discover the truth about your friend’s disappearance, the connections you make along the way can make or break your adventure in Los Ojos.

Meet people. Learn their stories. Stay human!

It really, really feels like Assassin’s Creed, and it also really doesn’t do a great job of getting you invested in its characters (especially if you haven’t played the first game in the series, Shadow of Mordor).

Go behind enemy lines to forge your army, conquer Fortresses and dominate Mordor from within. Experience how the award winning Nemesis System creates unique personal stories with every enemy and follower, and confront the full power of the Dark Lord Sauron and his Ringwraiths in this epic new story of Middle-earth.

Theme Song: I Adore My C64 by Nicolai Heidlas from HookSounds.com

Welcome to the very first episode of Let’s Play Arcade!

I’ve had a phenomenal time putting together the Xbox Game Passengers podcast over the past six months. It turns out that when you’re playing games that are randomly selected, you can come across some absolute gems that you may not have even glanced at otherwise. It’s been an extremely rewarding experience, and as it turns out, the very best part has reconnecting with friends and chatting with them about these shared gaming experiences.

Some of my very favourite episodes of Xbox Game Passengers have featured my close friend and former roommate, John. A few years back we lived together and were pretty inseparable, but these days we live hours away from each other and both lead busy and opposite lives. Over the years, talking over anything but iMessage became rare, and actually seeing each other even rarer.

We’ve always held the same interests, and when Apple revealed their Apple Arcade gaming service (if you’re unfamiliar, learn more about it here) back in March, we were both unbelievably excited to see what it had to offer, and over the next few months, the basis for Let’s Play Arcade was formed.

Let’s Play Arcade will essentially act as a sister show to Xbox Game Passengers. Rather than Xbox games, every other Wednesday John and I (no alternating guests, it’s the same duo each episode) will dissect and discuss a single, randomly selected game that’s available on Apple Arcade.

Neither of us really know anything about beer (or drink it all that often), so while we don’t know what anyone has to gain from us talking about them, we at least hope that it’ll be entertaining.

Each episode will also feature an ‘after show’, where we’ll basically drivel on about whatever we feel like.

We have a few episodes in the bank already, and we’re super excited for you to hear them. You can listen to our first episode below — we don’t specifically review a game here, but it’ll help you get to know us, as well as learn our initial impressions of the Apple Arcade service.

After John’s disappointing reaction (read: not being that scared) to Alien: Isolation in Episode 14, with the release of Bloober Team’s Blair Witch we simply had to break the rules, actually choose a game for the very first time, and bring him back to hopefully scare the shit out of him.

We think that breaking the rules was worth it. Listen below to find out how things went.

It’s 1996. A young boy disappears in the Black Hills Forest near Burkittsville, Maryland. As Ellis, a former police officer with a troubled past, you join the search. What starts as an ordinary investigation soon turns into an endless nightmare as you confront your fears and the Blair Witch, a mysterious force that haunts the woods…

I think that Extra Life is an unbelievably cool idea.

Gamers around the world, joining forces to raise money in support of sick an injured kids just feels so freaking wholesome, and the idea that it’s essentially a ‘marathon’ of streamed games just makes it feel like almost anyone can get involved.

I love it.

While I’d love to get a Geekscape Network team going in the near future (mostly to watch Horror Movie Night’s non-gamer host Matt Kelly play games because I think that would be hilarious), it hasn’t happened just yet and I have no excuse as to why.

That said, our pals over at Super GG Radio (of which, host Joel will be a guest on the December 11th edition of Xbox Game Passengers), a gaming podcast approaching its 40th episode that definitely gives me classic Geekscape Games (RIP) vibes, will be streaming for 24 hours in support of the Children’s Miracle Network on November 16th.

These guys have great chemistry and a fantastic show (listen to their latest episode embedded below), and I’m looking forward to checking out their stream, which they note will include all three regular hosts, along with an “open door of special guests and previous hosts and spouses!”

Again, things start up at 12AM on November 16th, and will last a whole 24 hours. The team has just posted their streaming schedule, which includes a ‘spooky hour’ filled with Blair Witch and Silent Hill 2, co-op games like Overcooked and Portal 2, some tournaments, some Jackbox Party Pack, and even some Sonic Adventure (and more). It should be a great time.

The team has set a goal of $1000USD, and have already amassed a cool $845 as of this writing.

You can check out the Super GG Radio twitch channel right here, and head to their Extra Life team page to donate right here. Good luck on Saturday to all of those on the Super GG Radio team!

This is pretty much the episode that didn’t want to happen, as Courntey’s keyboard broke, then Derek lost his voice, then Courtney got sick, and we had to push this thing so many freaking times… but here it is!

Forge your own path in Hollow Knight! An epic action adventure through a vast ruined kingdom of insects and heroes. Explore twisting caverns, battle tainted creatures and befriend bizarre bugs, all in a classic, hand-drawn 2D style.

Welcome to Geekscape’s newest gaming podcast, Xbox Game Passengers.

Every other Wednesday, host Derek and a guest will dissect and discuss just one game available on Microsoft’s Game Pass service, which was chosen for them completely at random.

Whether it’s a magical or a horrible experience, they’ll force themselves through it, share their thoughts, and let you know whether or not the game is worth your time! At the end of each episode, they’ll also randomly select the game for the following show.

This time around, John is back (yes, again) to discuss survival horror gem, Alien Isolation. John hates horror, and Derek has been trying to get him to play or watch numerous scary IPs over the near-decade that they’ve known each other. This is the first time that he’s said yes.

How did he react? Well, you know how to find out.

Discover the true meaning of fear in Alien: Isolation, a survival horror set in an atmosphere of constant dread and mortal danger. Fifteen years after the events of Alien™, Ellen Ripley’s daughter, Amanda enters a desperate battle for survival, on a mission to unravel the truth behind her mother’s disappearance.

As Amanda, you will navigate through an increasingly volatile world as you find yourself confronted on all sides by a panicked, desperate population and an unpredictable, ruthless Alien.

Underpowered and underprepared, you must scavenge resources, improvise solutions and use your wits, not just to succeed in your mission, but to simply stay alive.

This episode, Evan returns to talk about one of the most peculiar games that the show has featured yet, Innerspace. The game is kind of like being inside a giant beachball, there isn’t really any up or down, and… well, as you’ll hear, things get pretty confusing.

Soar through virgin skies and dive into lost oceans as you hunt for the ancient gods of the Inverse, a forsaken realm of inside-out planets. Created by a small team of seven developers and originally funded on Kickstarter, InnerSpace is a bright, colorful exploration flying game with no horizons.

The Gardens Between is a surreal puzzle adventure that follows best friends, Arina and Frendt, as they fall into a mysterious world of beautiful garden islands. Manipulate time to solve puzzles and discover the secrets of each island.

If today’s just-released Geekscape 524 featuring Felicia Day (embedded below and available right here) wasn’t quite enough Felicia for you… the second season of the hilarious improv space podcast Journey To The Stars has finally premiered after being revealed back in July.

The first episode of season two is available now (there’s also a sweet recap available in case you’ve forgotten any of the important stuff from season one), with 25 additional weekly episodes set to release over the course of the season.

As per the season’s description, the new episodes follow “the crew as they attempt to find their way back to Earth before it is devoured by the all-consuming force known as the Nothing. Season one detailed the misadventures of our group of bumblers played by Felicia Day (The Guild, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) as scatterbrained scientist Elsa Rankfort, Janet Varney (You’re The Worst, Stan Against Evil) as the misanthropic A.I. aptly named Sorry, Steve Berg (The Good Place, The Goldbergs) as apathetic technician Stew Merkel and Colton Dunn (Superstore, Key & Peele) as a wholly unqualified Captain Tucker Lentz, who accidentally find themselves on the wrong side of a wormhole.”

If that cast wasn’t already incredible enough, Criminal Minds Kirsten Vangness is also joining the crew this season as “Nico, a lesbian space alien who finds herself in a complicated love triangle with fellow crewmembers,” and guest stars will include The Office‘s Angela Kinsey, BoJack Horseman‘s Paul F. Tompkins, Children’s Hospital‘s Erinn Hayes, Good Game‘s Jesse Cox, Futurama‘s (and upcoming Geekscape produced short film Chasing Fletcher Allen‘s) Phil LaMarr, What We Do in the Shadow‘s Harvey Guillén, and even more.

Honestly, I’ve only recently heard of the podcast, and it sounds like a totally wonderful time. With a ton of episodes already available from season one, I think I just found my new podcast addiction. Check out Voyage to the Stars season two right here, or check out the season premiere below.

As you just heard in today’s episode of Geekscape, on October 1st Felicia’s new book, EMBRACE YOUR WEIRD: Face Your Fears and Unleash Creativity! is set to release.

In the book, she “threads personal anecdotes and plenty of personality through a practical, hands-on guide to finding, rekindling, and enhancing creative passions, which absolutely sounds like it could be right up my alley right now.

If Jon and Felicia talking about the book has you hankering to learn more, you can pre-order the book right here.

This episode, John returns to chat with Derek about The Elder Scrolls Online. Neither has played an MMO in years, and both were surprised to learn just how fresh (and just how familiar) an MMO today could feel. The pair detail their favourite quests, how playing a game like this with a controller feels, some silly bugs, and much more!

Join over 13 million players in the award-winning online multiplayer RPG and experience limitless adventure in a persistent Elder Scrolls world. Battle, craft, steal, or explore, and combine different types of equipment and abilities to create your own style of play. No game subscription required.

Welcome to another very special edition of the Xbox Game Passengers podcast.

Typically, every other Wednesday, host Derek and a guest will dissect and discuss just one game available on Microsoft’s Game Pass service, which was chosen for them completely at random.

Today might be Wednesday, but it still isn’t typical. Last week, host Derek and regular guest Mikaela descended on Seattle for the annual PAX West convention. During the show itself, the duo released two special Xbox Game Passengers episodes detailing all of the incredible experiences that they had at the show (episode one here, episode two here). Here’s another (final) PAX special, this time chock full of interviews with game developers on the show floor.

Here are all of the games featured in the interviews, and trailers for each:

Liberated

The Suicide Of Rachel Foster

Wanderlust

https://youtu.be/7ASrKo-yVZ4

Wavebreak

Untitled Goose Game

Dauntless

No Straight Roads

Luna: The Shadow Dust

Stranded Sails

Spiritfarer

Mutazione

Sparklite

Gamedec

If these special episodes aren’t your thing, this will be the last episode for this year’s PAX, and with next Wednesday’s The Elder Scrolls Online episode, we’ll be back to our regularly scheduled programming.

This episode, Mike returns to chat about one of his favourite series of all time, Gears of War. Specifically, they’re playing Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, the impressive Xbox One remake that sadly (somehow) isn’t Xbox One X Enhanced. The duo dish about their favourite moments, their history with the series, and why Derek has to play every game inverted.

“Experience the game that launched one of the most celebrated sagas in entertainment with Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. The shooter that defined the first generation of HD gaming has been painstakingly remastered in 1080P and modernized for Xbox One, and is packed full of new content including five campaign chapters never released on Xbox. The story of “Gears of War” thrusts gamers into a deep and harrowing battle for survival against the Locust Horde, a nightmarish race of creatures that surface from the depths of the planet. Players live and breathe the role of Marcus Fenix. A disgraced former war hero, Marcus seeks personal redemption as he leads his fire team against an onslaught of merciless warriors from below.”

Welcome to another very special edition of the Xbox Game Passengers podcast.

Typically, every other Wednesday, host Derek and a guest will dissect and discuss just one game available on Microsoft’s Game Pass service, which was chosen for them completely at random.

But… today isn’t typical, and today isn’t Wednesday. Host Derek and regular guest Mikaela have descended on Seattle for the annual PAX West convention. Yesterday, the duo detailed all of the amazing games that they had the opportunity to experience during Saturday of PAX West 2019, and with another day in the books, they’re here to chat about what else… but more games.

Today they played games like The Suicide of Rachel Foster (which Derek immediately fell in love with), Wave Break (which feels very Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater-esque, with some insanely cool multiplayer modes), Cardpocalypse, Dauntless on Switch (with full cross-play and cross-progression), Her Story follow-up Telling Lies, the super-fun and addicting action of Windjammers 2, the intense roller-derby action of Roller Champions, Hitchhiker, the weird and wonderful world of Mutazione, the unbelievably beautiful world of Spiritfarer (which is already confirmed for Xbox Game Pass), the Stardew-esque Stranded Sails, Sparklight, the breathtaking style of Sayanara Wild Heart, and much, much more.

If this episode isn’t your thing, the show will be returning to its regularly scheduled programming on Wednesday, September 4th, when Mike returns to the show to chat about Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. But before then, tomorrow you’ll see another PAX episode release, and a PAX developer interview special coming later in the week.

Also, as Derek details pretty early on, he has kind of lost his voice over the past few days, so thanks a ton for bearing with him as he struggles to talk!

The duo spent time with titles like Borderlands 3, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Gamedec, Liberated, Mortal Kombat 11 (on Google Stadia), Wanderlust, No Straight Roads, Death Stranding, LUNA The Shadow Dust. Derek also got some hands-on time with Panic Inc.’s upcoming Playdate console, and he needed to talk about that. They also hit up events for Cyberpunk 2077, and The Elder Scrolls Online, and share a few details about what was available at each.

Mostly, they just talk about how freaking cool PAX is, and also how Graveyard Keeper may just have the best booth.

Typically for our ‘Crowdfund This’ column, we feature neat-looking campaigns that have just started, or that could use a little bit of a final push to get it over its finish line.

This project from RealmSmith Inc. is something completely different, as it actually hit its original goal in less than 48 hours, and is already more than 200% funded.

The company makes incredible sounding, super-immersive Dungeons and Dragons adventure boxes, and they’re looking to take their passions to the next level with this Kickstarter campaign.

They’ve already been shipping boxes for over a year — each adventure consisting over a 6 part story, delivered through 6 monthly boxes. It sounds like they’ve already made a pretty massive impact, as folks like DwarvenForge founder Stefan Pokorny and Luke Gygax, the son of the freaking creator of Dungeons and Dragons, among with other creators and influencers in the industry, have shared support for this bad-ass idea.

The goal of the campaign is to “to raise awareness, build community, and take our existing subscription boxes to the next level.” The campaign video (watch it near the bottom of the page, details a few of the ways that the team at RealmSmith plans to do this, and it begins with the packaging for the box itself. Rather than, well, a box that you’ll just throw away, the freaking box turns into a DM Screen, Dice Tower, and Initiative Tracker… yes, all of them!

Along with the sick-ass packaging, the team also plans to enhance the boxes with more immersive items, better printed materials (and paper stock), improved artwork, better marketing to help build awareness even further, and faster shipping!

Each box is meant to be extremely immersive, from what you see, hear, and smell when you’re running your campaign — the goal here is to take out the monotonous side of being a GM, so that they can instead “take a lot of the monotonous prep-work out of each session a Game Master prepares while equipping them to maximize creativity and spend time crafting a world for their players.

Honestly the boxes sound sick. Each one includes:

Full-color Adventure Module: 5th edition compatible module written and designed by our own staff which provides cues on when to play moods from the Soundset and when to light the candle, etc. Each module can be used as a one-shot or to continue the ongoing campaign.

Premium Plastic Unpainted Miniatures: Curated to provide everything needed for a major encounter within the module.

Papercraft Terrain: Printed on premium card stock for you to simply cut out and build. We also offer the digital PDFs to download to print your own as well as instructions on how to assemble it all.

Hand-Drawn Map: Drawn by our very own Jason Azevedo. The map provides information on the major encounter and a guideline of how the paper craft should be set up.

Custom Syrinscape Soundset: A Soundset for the Syrinscape fantasy player designed by our own team that includes original sounds recorded by RealmSmith.

Themed Scented Candle: Soy-based hand-poured scented candles that set the mood for a major encounter within the module.

Mystery Player Item: A themed prop that is intended to be given to the players to enhance the story.

The campaign’s first stretch goal, an online adventure builder, has already been reached at a cool $40,000, and it’s just $2000 away from its second stretch goal, which would add a ‘Trade Route Expansion’ to your box.

Rewards start as low as $7CAD (did I mention that these guys are from Toronto?) for a digital download of an adventure module and a subscription discount, to about $3300 which nets you a custom sculpted and painted DM screen, along with every RealSmith box, and a subscription voucher. Naturally, there are a ton of other options in-between, including wooden mugs, candles, subscription boxes, art by Spider-Man, X-Men, and Black Panther artist Ken Lashley, and even more.

Really, this is just a sick looking project that really makes me want to give D&D a go again (damned work and schedules eating up all of my time).

Take a look at the Kickstarter video below, and let us know if you’ll be backing the project! You can learn more, as well as back, right here.

This is a new game designed by Richard Garfield… do I really need to say any more?

I picked up my first pack of Magic: The Gathering cards when I was about eight years old. I played the game for years (and fell in and out and in and out of it depending on where I was in life) and hope every day that I see some news about Magic: The Gathering – Arena dropping on mobile platforms. Last year at PAX West, Artifact made me feel like a kid again — leading me to feel a sense of wonder and excitement that I hadn’t felt in quite some time. A few months later, a unique deck game called Keyforge released. It’s a card game with no deck building or booster packs, just inexpensive, algorithmically assembled pre-built decks that absolutely made buying decks as addicting as buying boosters used to be — this is a game that even my fiancé Mikaela got into, and prior to this I would have never, ever thought I’d see her play a card game.

So, you could say I’m a fan… and you could say that I was probably going to back this the moment that I read the names that are attached to it. Garfield designed the game along with essentially the master of trivia, 74-time Jeopardy winner Ken Jennings (with art by Ian O’Toole). Half Truth is also being produced by Studio71, the studio behind games like Shady Agents and previous Kickstarter darling The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls. After reading Ken’s book Brainiac, Garfield wanted to design a trivia game, and after more than 13 years of the pair crafting and playtesting the title, the game is ready to be revealed.

The game is called Half Truth, and it’s a party / trivia game designed for all ages. According to the just-launched Kickstarter for the game, it “comes with 500 trivia question cards and each card has a category on it, like “Animals with blue tongues.” There are six possible answers, three right and three wrong, and players have to place bets on answers they believe are correct. Players are usually surprised by how well they do. We’re all smarter than we think.”

Gameplay sounds pretty simple, and it also sounds like unlike a lot of other trivia titles, there’s not a lot of waiting around (which can get boring and wouldn’t make for a very fun party game). Every player will play every round. Jennings and Garfield get more in depth with the gameplay right here:

Honestly, it just looks like a take on trivia that I’ve never seen before. As someone who knows a lot about certain things (movies, video games, other useless stuff) and not enough about others (history, politics, sports), a game like this that gives you a chance even if you’re trivia worthy knowledge isn’t the most well-rounded sounds right up my alley. There’s even a risk/reward system that can earn you extra points if you guess more of the possibilities, so when a card pops up that you feel confident about, you’ll be able to act on it.

The campaign has just started, and based on the rate that the backers are coming through, I think that Half Truth is going to blow past its goal pretty quickly. Naturally, there are some cool rewards up for grabs for backers, including discounted copies of the game, multiple copies of the game, copies signed by Garfield and Jennings, and even the option to add your own custom card to the game!

Jonathan even had Richard Garfield to talk about his achievements in gaming, as well as the creation and development of Half Truth. You can listen right here, and the episode is also embedded below.

Take a look at the campaign video for Half Truth below, and head here for (much) more information and to back the project. The game is estimated to ship in December, and I just can’t wait to play!

Welcome to Geekscape’s newest gaming podcast, Xbox Game Passengers.

Every other Wednesday, host Derek and a guest will dissect and discuss just one game available on Microsoft’s Game Pass service, which was chosen for them completely at random.

This episode, guest Dougie joins Derek to chat about how many times he’s finished Mass Effect (a lot of times), how upset he was at the lack of split-screen in Halo 5: Guardians, and of course, the cyberpunk survival horror game that stars Rutger Hauer, Observer.

Sounds like a winning combination, doesn’t it?

Also, this episode was recorded well (well) before Rutger’s death (RIP), so please keep that in mind as we make fun of his bad voice acting… Yeah.

“What would you do if your fears were hacked? >observer_ is a cyberpunk horror game from Bloober Team, the creators of Layers of Fear. Play as an Observer, the new front line of neural police, as you hack into the jagged minds of the insane.”

As always, it’s a really good month to be an Xbox Game Pass subscriber.

Microsoft today hosted a special Gamescom episode of Inside Xbox, which featured world premiere footage of Gears of War 5‘s insane new Horde mode additions, a brand new trailer for Bloober Team’s upcoming Blair Witch, new footage (and a very close release date) for the Two Colonels DLC for Metro: Exodus, and so, so much more.

Of course, the company also had some new and exciting announcements for Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass for PC, nearly all of which remind me that I should probably just never buy a video game ever again.

Here’s what’s coming for the service, and when:

Devil May Cry 5 — Console — August 19th

Stellaris — Console + PC – August 19th (PC coming soon)

Ape Out — Console + PC — August 22nd

Kingdom Come: Deliverance — Console + PC — August 22nd

Bard’s Tale IV: Director’s Cut — Console + PC — August 27th

Blair Witch — Console + PC — August 30th

That’s a lot of content. I’m so excited for more folks to discover Kingdom Come: Deliverance, and I’m even more excited to get my hands on Blair Witch!

The company also detailed some September news, like the fact that Gears 5 is getting some Halo: Reach DLC, which is included with the Ultimate Edition of the game that Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers gain access to. The phenomenal-looking Dead Cells will also hit the service on September 5th.

Naturally, as the host of the Xbox Game Passengers podcast, all of these announcements are totally amazing. If you want to hear a guest and I review a randomly-selected Xbox Game Pass game every other week, here’s where you can tune in:

Which game are you most looking forward to?

What a dream.

I’ve been playing (and loving) thatgamecompany’s long awaited multi platform follow-up to Journey, called Sky, for a few weeks now. The game is simply stunning, and so far well worth the wait, but I just keep thinking during my playtime with Sky that I’m long overdue to play Journey again.

Journey launched exclusively on PS3 back in 2012, and it pretty much took the world by storm back then. From its epic score, to its unbelievably beautiful world, to the tale that it tells and the surprises that you find along the way, Journey is truly something special whether you’re really into playing video games or not (really, it’s an experience for everyone).

Over the years, the game was naturally ported over to PS4, and later PC, but in a surprise announcement from current publisher Annapurna Interactive, the game is now available across iOS devices for just $5US.

This is an incredible value, and I have to imagine that this beautiful game will feel right at home on the touch-centric platform (note that as of this writing there is no controller support for the title). The experience may only be a few hours long, but it’s one that you’ll remember for the rest of your life.

You can grab Journey for iPhone and iPad right here.

We’re super excited for this episode. Geekscape Games (RIP) alumni Shane O’Hare joins Derek to talk about, well, a lot of things. The duo dish about the old days, tell some inside jokes, the Divergent series, and of course, Xbox Game Studios’ surprisingly entertaining platformer, Super Lucky’s Tale. Shane also tells us about his initial Xbox Game Pass impressions, and naturally this episode was recorded just before Xbox Game Pass for PC was officially announced, so if it sounds a little out of date, it’s because things have changed a lot with Xbox Game Pass in the past couple of months!

“A delightful, playground platformer for all ages that follows Lucky, the ever-optimistic, energetic, and lovable hero, on his quest to find his inner strength and help his sister rescue the Book of Ages from Jinx. Jinx is the scheming and mysterious villain trying to reshape the world, but for what reason?”

This episode, new guest Evan joins Derek to examine Chucklefish’s extremely charming, and endlessly challenging Advance Wars homage, Wargroove. The turn-based tactics title brings full crossplay between PC, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One, and features a cool campaign, local and online multiplayer, and an insane amount of create-your-own options.

“Take to the battlefield with Wargroove, a strategy game for up to 4 players! Choose your Commander and wage turn-based war on battling factions. Design and share maps, cut-scenes and campaigns with easy-to-use editors and in-depth customization tools!”
