In last season’s finale of Sherlock, the ending came as a surprise when Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) jumped off the top of a building to his supposed death. Was this to be the end of our favorite detective? Well, we know that season 3 will begin sometime next year, so maybe we haven’t lost him just yet.

Since the episode aired in January, there have been a lot of speculations as to what really happened when Sherlock took the jump. Fans have come up with wild ideas as to how he could have survived the fall and have spoken up about their many theories. In a recent interview with Cumberbatch, he explained his surprise to all of the reactions from the apparent death in the season finale. He said,

“The level of obsession with it was nuts. When I read that in the script I got the biggest kick of my life. I remember ringing Martin and going, “Oh my f**king God. Have you read this?”

He also joked about the many theories that had been circulating among the fans:

“All the homeless people in London caught me [laughs]. They formed a human mattress and it was lovely. It was like getting the bumps on your birthday, I didn’t feel a thing. Seriously though, I did that jump. I was on a wire and went off the edge of the building. I was jumping off about three metres into a bunch of cardboard boxes with only a railing separating me from the real drop. We did it about two or three times in the rain with people filming opposite, and it was f**king amazing. I’ve skydived three times and it was nearly as thrilling. I even did a sky dive while I was in New Zealand, which I shouldn’t be telling anyone, but there you go.”

Cumberbatch, unfortunately, didn’t let slip any hints on exactly how Sherlock survived his fall, but he did let us know that Steven Moffat plans to begin filming in January of next year. Looks like we’ve still got more waiting and theorizing to do between now and then.

MTV Geek reported today that while series 7 of Doctor Who only premiered two weeks ago, the first episodes will be hitting your shelves very soon!

BBC America lists the DVD release date as November 13, 2012.

The disc will contain the first five episodes of the season, as well as a few special features! Not a ton of content, but with the preorder price set at $19.98, it isn’t too big a hit on your wallet!

I haven’t seen the show myself, but if this seasons synopsis is any indication, some crazy stuff is sure to go down:

Daleks? Dinosaurs on a spaceship? Interstellar cowboys? The longawaited, much talked-about seventh series features five episodes and a wild array of new thrills—and dangers. While the eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) continues his time-travelling adventures, it’s the final farewell for Amy (Karen Gillen) and Rory (Arthur Darvill).

We’re just a few days from the premiere of the newest series of Doctor Who. Images for the first 5 episodes have found their way online, and give us a taste of what’s to come from this years offering.

Check them out below!

Admittedly, I’ve never seen a single episode of Doctor Who. Do I hand in my geek card? Can I be redeemed?

Asylum of the Daleks

Dinosaurs on a Spaceship

A Town Called Mercy

The Power of Three

The Angels Take Manhattan

In a previous article, I wrote that BBC had confirmed that the premiere of Doctor Who will be Saturday, September 1 with Asylum of the Daleks. But, they have decided to give us a little treat by releasing a five-part mini adventure starting Monday, August 27, at noon on the official BBC website, with parts 2-5 broadcasting from the site throughout the week.

Pond Life, featuring the Doctor (Matt Smith), Amy (Karen Gillan), and Rory (Arthur Darvill), was written by Chris Chibnall and directed by Saul Metzstein. Throughout the mini adventure, we can expect to see what the crew has been up to since the end of the last series.

Chibnall gives some insight on what the mini series will be about:

“Pond Life provides us with a lovely opportunity to catch-up with Amy and Rory since we saw them at the end of the last series.  It opens with the Ponds at home and gives us an insight in to just what happens when the Doctor drops in and out of their lives.  Travelling with the Doctor is one of the greatest things you can do, but it’s fun to spend a few moments looking at the chaos he can also bring.”

Caroline Skinner, Executive Producer, also sheds some light on what we can expect:

“Chris has written a beautiful, heartfelt and wickedly funny piece about the adventures the Ponds have been having with the Doctor since we last saw them on-screen.  It’s not long till the series itself will be back with a vengeance – but in the meantime, Pond Life is a truly heart-warming piece about our best-loved companions and their madcap relationship with their raggedy Doctor.”

Check out this video of Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill as they give you a brief introduction into Pond Life.

More information about Pond Life will be released as the date draws near.

So if you already made plans this weekend, I suggest you cancel them. I was trying to find a nice little project for myself, when I stumbled across this gem on the internet. The BBC blueprints on how to build a Dalek! WARNING! This is not a project for the faint of heart. You will definitely need to have some “do-it-yourself” know how to complete this one.

Apparently, there was a Doctor Who fan back in the 80’s by the name of Ronald that wrote to the productions team asking for the DIY build plans of a Dalek. What he got in return was a response letter along with a copy of the blueprints that were originally released in 1973. I wonder if they would release some sonic screwdriver blueprints if I asked them nicely…

If you’re feeling up to the task, and you have some woodworking and metalworking skills, then I highly encourage you to try this one out. Maybe create your own army of Daleks and scare all your neighbors. If you do decide to take this project on, definitely send in some pictures! I’d love to see your Dalek creation!

After all the rumors that have been circulating around about when the Doctor will return, BBC has finally confirmed that the new series of Doctor Who will premiere on Saturday, September 1. They have also released the official synopses for the first three episodes!

Asylum of the Daleks

“Kidnapped by his oldest foe, the Doctor is forced on an impossible mission – to a place even the Daleks are too terrified to enter… the Asylum. A planetary prison confining the most terrifying and insane of their kind, the Doctor and the Ponds must find an escape route. But with Amy and Rory’s relationship in meltdown, and an army of mad Daleks closing in, it is up to the Doctor to save their lives, as well as the Ponds’ marriage.”

Dinosaurs on a Spaceship

“An unmanned spaceship hurtles towards certain destruction – unless the Doctor can save it, and its impossible cargo… of dinosaurs! By his side a ragtag gang of adventurers; a big game hunter, an Egyptian Queen and a surprised member of the Pond family. But little does the Doctor know there is someone else onboard who will stop at nothing to keep hold of his precious, prehistoric cargo.”

A Town Called Mercy

“The Doctor gets a Stetson (and a gun!), and finds himself the reluctant Sheriff of a Western town under siege by a relentless cyborg, who goes by the name of the Gunslinger. But who is he and what does he want? The answer seems to lie with the mysterious, Kahler-Jex, an alien doctor (yes another one!) whose initial appearance is hiding a dark secret.”

What we can also expect is the death of one of the TARDIS crew members midway through the season and the addition of another, Rory’s Dad, played by Mark Williams (Mr. Weasley of the Harry Potter franchise.) A new companion will also be joining the Doctor partway through the season once the TARDIS crew parts ways in episode six. Carla, portrayed by Jenna-Lousie Coleman, is rumored to be the daughter of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, who was played by the late actor Nicholas Courtney.

Other rumors that have been circulating as of late is the revamp of the TARDIS in honor of the Doctor’s 50th Anniversary and that Neil Gaiman, writer of The Doctor’s Wife in series 6, will be returning to write a few episodes (perhaps episodes 12 and 13) of series 7.

If you are a Doctor Who fan and you happen to live in New York City, BBC is planning on having a screening of the first episode Asylum Of The Daleks on Saturday, August 25 at 6pm! Much like the screening at the BFI, there will be a live Q&A with the Doctor (Matt Smith), his companion (Karen Gillan), and executive producer Caroline Skinner.

Tickets go on sale tomorrow, Thursday, August 16 at the price of 11¢ (with a surcharge of 1$) in honor of the Eleventh Doctor and will be available exclusively through a link shared by the @BBCAmerica account. Tickets will sell out fast, so try to get one while you can! This will be your chance to be one of the first to view Asylum of the Daleks before the season premiere on BBC America’s Supernatural Saturday, coming this Fall.

Recently a video was linked to me showing how much CGI and Digital Compositing goes into some of our favorite TV shows. What followed was a rat hole filled with CGI effects. And lies. How many lies TV tell us. So take a look at what can be done with so little!

Are yee a fan of Game of Thrones?

And even a movie that seems to not have ANY effects is actually full of them.

And there are the little guys. The three guys from Compost Creative have done some amazing work. Take a gander at what these guys did to recreate the D-Day invasion at Normandy!

The wait will soon be over for all you Doctor Who fans out there. It’s been a long couple of months, but later this week, series seven will finally begin and we will get the Doctor back into our lives! But for those of you who really can’t wait, the first episode, Asylum of the Daleks, will be premiered tomorrow night at the British Film Festival.

Following the preview, there will be a live Q&A with Matt Smith, who will be returning for his third series as the Doctor, along with Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill. We can also expect to see award winning writer Steven Moffat and executive producer Caroline Skinner on stage alongside them.

If you’re unable to make it out to the BFI in London, you can always follow the official Doctor Who Twitter, where Skinner will be posting the latest news periodically throughout the night. If you don’t already follow the Twitter feed, now would be the best time to start!

Check out the latest trailer for series seven of Doctor Who here!

So, what’s the best way to celebrate a franchise’s 50th anniversary? With a TV movie! Duh. BBC has announced that Dr. Who is going to be getting a TV movie titled An Adventure in Space and Time that is going to explore the genesis of Doctor Who from its first broadcast on Nov. 23, 1963. The 90-minute movie will explore all aspects of the series, including the many personalities who came together to bring the show to life. Given the nature of the Doctor, who regenerates in different bodies (and has thus, been played by different actors), his origin story has the potential to be really great. And fans are likely to be wondering (and hoping) if the other actors who have played the doctor appear in the special. Doctor Who has had at least 11 different actors playing the Doctor, beginning with William Hartnell and including Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant and the current Matt Smith. Mark Gatiss wrote the film with Steven Moffat and Caroline Skinner producing it. The latest season of Doctor Who starts in the UK this month with BBC America following in the fall.

They only just started shooting a month ago, but lucky enough for fans the Doctor Who team had enough in the can to pull together this fantastic teaser trailer for series 7 just in time for the official convention in Cardiff this past weekend. Robo gunslingers in the old west, egyptian dressed ladies, Farscape‘s Ben Browder and is that a Dalek eye stalk?!? Autumn can’t get here fast enough.

Jenna-Louise Coleman, 25 year old actress from Emmerdale and Waterloo Road was announced this morning as the newest companion to travel with the Doctor in the TARDIS after the Ponds take their in episode 5 of the coming series. Episode 5 Moffat has said will feature “a final encounter with the Weeping Angels in ep 5. Not everyone gets out alive & I mean it this time.”

Jenna’s first official episode will be the 2012 Christmas special which will be followed by 8 more episodes of series 7 in 2013. All of this of course leading directly into the 50th anniversary of the show in November 2013.

The only other information we currently have on the new companion is this quote from Steven Moffat, “It’s not often the Doctor meets someone who can talk even faster than he does, but it’s about to happen. Jenna is going to lead him his merriest dance yet. And that’s all you’re getting for now. Who she’s playing, how the Doctor meets her, and even where he finds her, are all part of one of the biggest mysteries the Time Lord ever encounters. Even by the Doctor’s standards, this isn’t your usual boy meets girl.”
