There’s not alot of details known about Summit Entertainment’s upcoming remake 1986’s Highlander. The only details known about the film are the Ryan Reynolds will be portraying Connor MacLeod and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) was attached to direct the film. There can only be one director. But it appears that it won’t be Fresnadillo who has exited the project. Deadline reports:

“I’m told that his exit is amicable, and that after a year of working on the project, he and Summit could not get past the fact they had differing views of the film, and finally agreed to disagree. Fresnadillo left a remake of The Crow to join Highlander. It’s unclear at the moment whether that is an option, but come Monday, he will be looking for another movie, and Summit will be looking for another Highlander helmer.”

The original film, about an immortal from the Scottish Highlands that was born in the 16th century, spawned multiple sequels as well as a television series. However, the film definitely doesn’t hold up with time and is one of the films desperately in need of a remake. Seriously, why was that guy doing all those damn back flips in that parking garage?

As we all know, a Kickstarter for a film adaptation of the much loved comic The Goon was introduced at last weekend’s New York Comic Con (side note, funding is currently sitting at 37%, tell your friends!). David Fincher is set to direct the feature, which was introduced to him by friend Tim Miller.

A fan on the Kickstarter page recently asked about progress on the Deadpool film. Tim Miller, who is currently set to direct the project, had some unfortunate (if not expected) news:

“We’ve turned in an amazing script and done some early tests and visual development that–I’m confident–would get the fans stoked. And Ryan still loves the project. So it’s really up to Fox as to whether or not the film happens–all I can do is hope (and beg periodically) that it be allowed to move ahead. “

The news is basically a confirmation of what many of us expected. The film hasn’t been officially canned, but it seems as though it’s been sent down to development hell, unlikely to see the light of day anytime soon. Definitely a sad realization for all us fans.

The one sliver of hope here may be the fact that Mark Millar is consulting on all of the Fox’ Marvel properties. If anyone can get Deadpool off the back burner, it’s going to be him.

How excited were you for this movie to happen?

So, let me start off by saying I was in a packed theater with no more than ten females present. I guess they were all off seeing Channing Tatum’s bare ass while I was seeing Mark Wahlberg’s bare ass. There was the one spoiler I am giving you. I know ladies…you are now trading in your tickets for tonight to see ‘Ted’ instead.

Earlier this year I made the statement that ’21 Jump Street’ would be the funniest movie to come out this year. I now retract said statement. ‘Ted’ brought me to tears due to laughter more times than I could count. If you had any fears that Seth MacFarlane’s humor wouldn’t translate to the big screen…have them no more. It translates and it translates oh so well.

‘Ted’ tells the story of John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg), a grown man who must deal with the cherished teddy bear who came to life as the result of a childhood wish…and has refused to leave his side ever since. John’s girlfriend Lori (Mila Kunis) wants to move on with their lives together and feels Ted (Seth MacFarlane) is in the way of that happening.

If you’re looking for “smart funny” go somewhere else. Why the fuck would you be expecting that? This movie is exactly what you think it’s going to be and that’s a great thing. While this movie can appeal to everyone it’s definitely aimed at the products of the 80’s and 90’s. There are some jokes that may be lost on the younger crowd. But even if you you’ve never seen them you will probably still laugh and sort of get the numerous ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Flash Gordon’ references. And how would it be a Seth MacFarlane movie without the cameos? As stated I am keeping this review 99% spoiler free but there are moments you are not going to expect in this movie and they are great.

One worry I had about this movie was how believable was it going to be seeing Ted throughout the movie. The CG is great and there are times when I honestly forgot that it was CG. There’s a scene in the opening when Ted meets a certain late night talk show host that left me wondering “How did they pull that off?”

Overall ‘Ted’ is a hilarious and fun movie. If you don’t laugh at all within the first five minutes of the film…go get your money back and go see something else. But then again if you’re on this site I honestly expect you to laugh multiple times within the first five minutes and the entire duration of the movie. ‘Ted’ is one of those comedies that you will be able to watch over and over again and still laugh at the jokes.

Score: 4/5

It was reported months ago that Ryan Reynolds (‘Green Lantern’, ‘Safe House’) was in talks for the role of Conner MacLeod in the new ‘Highlander’. And after months of negotiations the 35 year old has been officially cast as the lead in the film.

“After roughly a month of negotiations, Ryan Reynolds has officially been cast in the lead role for HIGHLANDER. Reynolds will play Conner MacLeod, a Highlander who discovers he is one of a dwindling group of immortals who wander the earth and kill each other in combat for the final “Prize” – immortality.”

Are you ready for Ryan Reynolds to be the only one? Will we get another all-Queen soundtrack? Are they hopefully going to ignore all of the stupid alien stuff?

Well, it’s February, a month we mostly connect with Valentine’s Day. So for the next few weeks I’ll be defending a few poorly reviewed rom-coms. This week’s romantic comedy was released in 2005 and currently holds a 42% freshness on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s a familiar Christmas themed rom-com called Just Friends.

Just Friends tells the story of Chris Brander, a successful record producer living in Los Angeles. When he was in High School he was an overweight kid in love with his best friend Jamie. After an embarrassing graduation party, Chris moved from Jersey to Los Angeles and never came back. Until one day his plane to Paris is forced to land with his newest client (and former girlfriend) Samantha James. While in Jersey, he’s forced to face old demons. Once again Chris tries to get out of the friend zone, while Jamie starts to fall for the formerly geeky Dusty Dinkleman.

What makes Just Friends work is that almost every guy can relate to the friend-zone concept. Even the world’s biggest ladies man has experienced the pain of rejection at least once in their life. Ryan Reynolds is at his most believable in the beginning of the film as the overweight version of himself. He’s funny, pathetic and charming but none of it ever seems forced.

Amy Smart is as beautiful as ever in this film. While watching this I realized how rarely I’ve seen her in movies lately (outside of Crank 1 & 2 of course). It’s not hard to see how anyone could fall head over heels for her.

The film works best when it’s over the top. This mostly means anything involving Chris Klein’s performance of Dusty Dinkleman, the perfect boyfriend. Be it in the beginning when he’s attempting to perform a song but gets too nervous to get past the first few notes or later in the film when he’s playing Christmas carols like he’s Yngwie Maimsteen, he creates a much needed sense of surrealism to this film.

Anna Faris’ performance of Samantha James, the ex-girlfriend from hell, is a mix of hilarious, annoying and terrifying. A direct inspiration of pop-star train wrecks like Britney Spears, she represents the way we see the young pop-star who gets whatever they want. She’s obsessed with public opinion, things going her way and her ‘vegetarianism’.

But the real star of the movie comes from Chris Marquette’s brilliant performance of Mike, Chris’ younger brother. Mike is lovable and funny but still slightly evil, mostly thinking about himself and his desire to have sex.

All these elements build towards what you want the most out of a romantic comedy. You want likable characters, you want a happy ending, you want to relate to the movie and most importantly you want to laugh. Just Friends does all those things, it even kicks the movie off with one of the funniest openings in Rom-Com history.

Never has lip-syncing been so funny and so depressingly relatable (for me at least, but I refuse to believe I’m alone in this). At the end of the day, Rom-Com’s are almost always a black sheep with critics (not unlike slasher movies). If you hate romantic comedies, this movie won’t change your opinion, but if you’re a fan, you will love this film and probably be surprised by it.

When not watching shitty romantic comedies Matt Kelly is hosting the Saint Mort Show (this week’s episode features Mitch Donaberger, Kyle K and Sonal Shah of Scrubs Fame) as well as tweets and writes in his blog Pure Mattitude.
