UPDATE: It seems like ComingSoon.net has just confirmed that Reeves will indeed be directing and producing the film. What an emotional roller coaster

Well, that was quick

2 weeks ago we reported that WB and Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves  were in talks to make him the director of the upcoming Ben Affleck solo film The Batman, but it seems as though DC & WB can just never win when it comes to the DCEU. According to people on the inside of the company, Reeves and WB have already stopped talks. These series of events continue to be an ongoing nightmare for both companies as the companies still have no concrete movie releases after 2018’s Aquaman.  The only way for the DCEU to really get back on track right now is Wonder Woman.  If this film can’t overcome another Rotten Tomatoes thrashing then will people be willing to go and see Justice League? What are your thoughts on these events? Who do you think would make a great director for The Batman. Tell us in the comments below!

Just when you thought things were looking up for DC and WB, everything comes tumbling down.

Dope and former Flash director Rick Famuyiwa has parted ways the company and film due to creative differences according to an article by The Hollywood Reporter. Whether  Famuyiwa left on his own accord or was forced out by WB & DC is yet to be known, but this poses a big problem for the upcoming speedster flick. Mostly because this film is supposed to start filming in March and they don’t even have a first draft of a script or a director now.flashNot only that, but main star Ezra Miller is extremely busy with other projects so making the March 2017 deadline doesn’t seem likely. Even more grim however is the prospect of a 2018 release is slowly sliding further and further away. God knows DC can’t rush the films production seeing as how they still have yet to make a film that satisfies both critics and fans (or even functions as an actual movie.) What do you think?  Who do you think should direct The Flash now? Tell us in the comments below!

While it pleased fans, many people (such as me) were frustrated and dissapointed with WB and DC’S second DCEU film Suicide Squad.

It seemed like there was a great film wanting to break out of there, but it was completely torn to pieces in post production as the film had sparatic cutting which resulted in scenes not making sense, characters not getting enough screen time, and many plot elements not properly explained well. Add to the fact that joker actor Jared Leto revealed that about 90% + of his joker was cut out, and many more things, there weren’t many people happy about the film.

Of course there really wasn’t anything else playing in theaters in august so the film was basically king of the box office for the entire month. Now, as multiple people predicted, it seems that this may have been intentional. This morning it was announced that Suicide Squad would be getting an extended edition. This extended cut aims to re insert a lot of the darker elements and a lot more of the Joker and Harley and origin stories. The question remains though, can an extended cut really save this movie? Guess we’ll find out?

Check out the the announcement trailer below and tell us what you think in the comments! Suicide Squad: Extended Edition will release November 15th on digital, and December 13th on Blu-Ray.

The Black Monday Murders 001

Another week and another huge Image release! This time it’s Black Monday Murders from the creative team of Jonathan Hickman and Tomm Coker.

“MAMMON” ALL HAIL GOD MONEY! From JONATHAN HICKMAN (EAST OF WEST, Secret Wars, Avengers) and TOMM COKER (UNDYING LOVE) comes a new crypto-noir series about the power of dirty, filthy money… and exactly what kind of people you can buy with it. THE BLACK MONDAY MURDERS is classic occultism where the various schools of magic are actually clandestine banking cartels who control all of society: a secret world where vampire Russian oligarchs, Black popes, enchanted American aristocrats, and hitmen from the International Monetary Fund work together to keep ALL OF US in our proper place.

This book is dense. Hickman essentially creates a world where the leaders of the financial markets are devil worshipping magicians, but you have to be a smarter person than me if you want to understand everything that’s going on in this oversized debut issue without reading it multiple times. There is tons of a dialog and diagrams as you might come to expect from Hickman. Tomm Coker’s art is a nice balance of photo-realism and creepy noir… if that makes any sense.

If you haven’t read anything from Hickman before, I strongly recommend reading this in trade as it is going to require a lot of focus to understand what’s going on.

DC

All-Star Batman (2016-) 001

Action Comics (2016-) 961

This may have been the greatest week of DC’s Rebirth yet!

Action Comics has become my favourite of DC’s ongoing series. There is a ton of action in this issue as the battle with Doomsday rages on, as well as more glimpses of the cloaked men behind the scenes. This is exactly what I want in biweekly book, enough story to keep it interesting, but never too much that I feel lost or like I’ve forgotten plot points.

I’m pretty sure the creative meeting at DC before Rebirth must have went something like this:

“So what’s next for our characters?”
“How about we take every super hero we have and give their powers to everyone?”
“Ok”

The trend that began in the Flash is continuing with Super characters in Superwoman #1. I don’t even know how many of them there are now…

We have pre-Flashpoint Superman, his son, Lex Luthor Superman, Supergirl, powerless Clark Kent, the “new Super-Man” (which I haven’t read) and now not one but two Superwomen (well, sort of). That’s a whole lot of super! If you aren’t fatigued by the characters yet, I actually found Superwoman #1 to be a surprisingly enjoyable read, although a little dialog heavy at times.

Alright, one more DC title to dive into before we transition to Marvel, and that title is All-Star Batman. This is the title I was most excited about back when DC announced their Rebirth titles, basically because I recognized and was excited by the creative team. Remember, I read very little DC before Rebirth. This title is unlike any other Batman story (Batman, Detective Comics) on the market right now. John Romita Jr.’s art makes it worth the price of admission. While the book gets a little zany for Batman at times, it is still a fun and refreshing read if you are interested in a less dark Batman than what we’ve become accustom to.

Marvel

Amazing Spider-Man (2015-) 016

While Civil War II isn’t of much interest to me anymore, but the few Marvel books outside of it that I’m still reading have been great and this week’s Amazing Spider-Man and Black Panther are no different!

Amazing Spider-Man is now into “Before Dead No More” but it definitely feels like the event itself. All the story lines that have felt ignored the past few issues are back in the spotlight and I’m loving it! Looks like Slott is ready to deliver us another superior (ok, bad pun) Spider-Man story.

I haven’t been into Black Panther, but this issue was one I actually enjoyed. I doubt I’ll ever go back and read these these issues and give deep thought to the themes Coates is digging into but this issue made me glad I’ve stuck with the series.

After DC’s ‘Zero Month’ Tony Daniel will be leaving ‘Detective Comics’ and John Layman (‘Chew’) will take over writing duties on the book. Jason Fabok (‘Batman: The Dark Knight’) will take over art duties on the book. The team spoke about what to expect from them when they take over on DC’s flagship title.

John Layman spoke on what he wants to do with Batman and his surroundings:

“Obviously, this is a happily surreal and exciting turn-of-events for my career. Not only is this my first work within the DC Universe, but I get to work on one of DC’s undisputedly coolest and highest-profile characters. I’m going to take a look at the role of criminal organizations within Gotham City, hopefully from a perspective that does not get considered very often (if at all). From the symbiotic relationship a master criminal must have with Gotham in order to survive, to the lowly, often faceless criminal underling hoping to rise up the ranks. All that, plus Batman’s gonna play with a bunch of crazy new toys and kick all kinds of butt.”

Jason Fabok talks about joining Detective Comics and what we can expect from his artwork:

“First, I want to express how thankful I am to have this opportunity. I am humbled that DC Comics would entrust me with one of their greatest titles. To work on a Batman title has been the number one goal that I set for my career and I am honored to have this opportunity to make my dream become a reality. I’m really hoping to deliver a dark, epic Batman with hints of the art deco stylings of the old animated series and the more modern take seen in recent incarnations. I am hoping to let my influences gush out onto the page and create something that is familiar, classic and yet my own. As for working with John Layman, I couldn’t be more excited. John is a great visual storyteller and he packs every page with meaningful panels that bring the story forward and add incredible depth. Together we hope to deliver a quality Batman tale, filled with mystery, twists, turns, shockers and most of all, fun!”

Ever since the shocking ending to ‘Detective Comics #1’, many fans have been wondering just what happened to The Joker. And it looks like we’ll finally be finding out this October. Writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo are about to follow up the awesome ‘Court Of Owls’ story-arc with something great here in the aptly titled ‘Death in the Family’.

I’ve been loving Snyder’s run on ‘Batman’ and can’t deny that this teaser has got me more than excited to see what he has in store. As the team explained to The Examiner:

“Joker is my favorite villain of all time,” Snyder told THE SOURCE. “Not just in comics. In everything – film, books, TV. He’s the greatest, hands down. So this story is something extremely important and personal to me – something I’ve been building in my head ever since I started working in Gotham. Basically, this is my big exploration of the Joker, my ARKHAM ASYLUM or THE KILLING JOKE, only bigger in scope. Bottom line: it’s the biggest, baddest, most shocking Joker story I could tell. This is Joker completely unleashed. He has been away for a full year planning this revenge, watching, plotting, setting things up. And now he’s back. He has his traps set, his knives sharpened… And wait ’til you see him. Greg’s sketches literally gave me chills. Point blank: This is Joker like you’ve never seen him before. He has a mission. He has a secret. And he has a serious axe to grind with Batman. It isn’t going to be pretty, but it’s going to be a wild ride. Thanks for taking it with us.”

IGN.com has the first look at the teaser (which is pretty damn awesome):
